End of the Year Financial Checklist
A
s I write this, we’re in early October...with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Chanukah right around the corner! It is certainly a reminder of just how quickly time seems to fly by, especially as we get older. There are some important “financial” things to take care of at this time of year, and I thought it might be helpful to share a few reminders with you. Before you start thinking about your holiday dinners, pulling out any decorations or even welcoming those pesky Trick-or-Treaters, there are a few financial tasks you might want to take care of first. Now, these are not difficult tasks—in fact, you may have handled some of them already—but each of these should be addressed by year-end, which will be here faster than you think!
Renee Borchardt, CFP® and Ray Dunlap, CFP®, AIF®
1. Review your 401(k) and IRA contributions. One of the most important things you can do for your finances before year-end is to attempt to maximize your contributions to any retirement accounts you own. This is especially true of your 401(k) if you’re still working. All contributions to a 401(k) plan must be made by December 31 if you wish to deduct them from your 2023 income. And, even if you can’t maximize your contributions (currently $22,500 or $30,000 if you’re over 50), you should at least put enough money aside in the plan to get all your employer’s matching contribution. With IRAs, you technically have more time—you can contribute up to April 15 of 2024, and it will still qualify for a 2023 contribution. But do it now before you forget! By the way, the IRA contribution is $6,500 if you’re under 50 and $7,500 if you’re 50 or older. 2. Consider your Charitable Contributions. This is especially poignant if you’re 70.5 or older. Because you can do a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QDC) from your IRA and, in addition to being a tax-free withdrawal from your IRA, it also counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). 3. Review Your Estate Plan. Things change. It happens to just about every family, and we think it is a good idea to pull out your estate documents (wills, trusts and powers-of-attorney) and review them once a year to make sure that they still accurately express your wishes, just in case something needs to be updated. 4. Schedule Your Annual Meeting with your Tax-Preparer. These folks get so busy in February and March that if it is important to you to meet with them, please reach out and get an appointment on the books. This is especially meaningful if you’re looking to interview a potential tax-preparer. They just will be too busy in February or March to do this, so please get this done now! 5. Take out your Required Minimum Distributions (RMD’s). If you’re 73 or older, please don’t forget to take this mandatory withdrawal from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or 457 Plan. Failure to withdrawal the appropriate amount will result in a 25% excise tax penalty. So if you are required to take out $10,000 and you either fail to do so or forget to do so, you will get hit with a $2,500 penalty! Don’t let this happen to you. 6. Review your cybersecurity. While cybercrimes are a threat year-round, we typically see a rapid rise around the holidays each year. Make sure your anti-malware protection is up to date, that your passwords are sufficiently varied and complex, and that you remain vigilant about suspicious phone calls, texts and emails.
So, there you have it...six simple things you can do before the end of the year to ensure you remain on track to reach your financial goals. If you have questions about anything on this list, remember, you can always reach out to us. We have years of experience helping people with these kinds of end-of-the-year tasks.

Happy Holidays to my favorite homeowners! I hope you are enjoying the change of weather as we look forward to the holiday season and time with friends and family. As I anticipate my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, I’m reminded to be thankful for so much this year, including my new position and friends at Cresswind! As we all journey through the holidays and into 2024, I invite you to also reflect on what changes have been made in your life for which you can be grateful. In my short time as Lifestyle Director, I’ve heard many wonderful stories of Cresswind’s impact. One homeowner shared how attending weekly fitness classes assisted in their recovery from surgery. Another found strength by sharing their cancer healing journey. And finally, one homeowner shared how involvement with a club led them to meet new friends and travel buddies. Whether relationships, experiences, learning something new or starting a new healthy habit, I hope the Lifestyle at Cresswind has facilitated something for which you can be grateful this year! We on the Lifestyle Committee are excited to host new events, tell more stories, teach more fitness classes, host more clubs and build more relationships! So, let’s look forward to a new year full of hope, promise and experiences to fit every lifestyle!

ACES Celebrates Hispanic Heritage
O
n Saturday, September 30, Cresswind’s Club ACES lit up the Clubhouse in a gorgeous display of culture and colors for the Hispanic Heritage Festival!
Members of the Hispanic Heritage Festival’s planning committee discuss the history and importance of Hispanic Heritage. From Left to Right: Edwyna Elzie, Yolanda Crider, Norma McKechnie, Evelyn Zapata Ross (Committee Chair), Cathy Olson and Liz Western. Not pictured committee members are Bettye Poydras and Sonia Ortiz-Smith.
ACES’ event committee, chaired by Evelyn Ross, set the festive mood with a huge balloon display and by adorning each table with fl ags from Hispanic countries as well as a variety of colors, fl owers and decorations. Delicious Cuban food was served by ACES club members and while guests ate, a mariachi band played and serenade everyone with their upbeat performance. Several times the room erupted in singing as guests joined in with the more familiar tunes.

As much as the night was a celebration, it was also an educational experience as event committee members discussed the history and importance of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 – October 15 in the United States each year. The night concluded with Cresswind’s own DJ, Da Harlem Spinna, aka Barbara Johnson, filling the ballroom with a curated playlist of the best Salsa and dance music. The night was as beautiful as it was rewarding to see homeowners from all backgrounds and walks of life came together for this Hispanic celebration. OUR CLUBS ARE THE HEART OF CRESSWIND! The Hispanic Heritage Festival is just one of the many dazzling club-hosted events. Each month, the Cresswind calendar is full of large-scale presentations, shows, dinners, classes, or socials specifically planned by our Clubs. Whether it’s Singles & Solos hosting a fashion show, the Arts & Crafts Club hosting their Nutcracker Market, Cresswind Cooks hosting a professional cooking demonstration, the wine clubs hosting an Italian winemaker or the Veterans Club hosting a cookout, each of these events stand on their own in terms of excellence, organization, and overall experience. Dozens of additional club-hosted events add to this list and represent what makes our Club community such a treasure. Our Clubs are the heart of Cresswind and we hope these events never stop! A Moment with Bob
Robert M. Goldberg - West Point, 1982; University of Michigan Law School, 1990; Member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys; Wealth Counsel; & Accredited Veterans Administration Attorney
If you have an estate plan, remember to review it and have it updated if needed. Question: What is an elder law attorney?
Answer: My firm is not defined by the type of legal problems we handle, but by the types of persons we help. Our goal is to maximize the independence and quality of life of older persons. We help families accomplish this while best utilizing and protecting life savings. We make sure older persons receive the help or care they may require in ways best utilizing family and government resources. We have the expertise to prevent and solve problems in the following areas: • Paying for Health and Long-Term Care: Planning for and assisting with obtaining VA, Medicare and Medicaid benefits and counseling and representation concerning health and long-term care insurance. • Planning for Disability: Advice and drafting of financial powers of attorney and health care advanced directives.
• Fiduciary Representation: Preparing and filing petitions seeking the appointment of a guardian and/or conservator. • Housing: Counseling regarding continuing care retirement communities, independent living communities, assisted living communities, personal care homes, home equity conversion, and living with family members. • Estate Planning: Preparing wills and trusts and minimizing estate and income taxes on IRA’s, 401(k)’s, and 403(b)’s.
• Probate: Preparing and filing petitions with the probate court after the death of a loved one and guiding the Personal Representative through the probate process.
Bob has practiced law for 33 years, focusing on Estate planning and Elder Law since 1999. His firm has assisted thousands of clients with wills, trusts, financial powers of attorney, health care advanced directives, Medicare appeals, Medicaid and VA benefits planning, asset preservation, and probate/trust administration.
