Who would have thought that our nation would be hit so hard by a virus? In the beginning it seemed almost unreal and we were mostly in denial. Then we faced the terrible forecast telling us that we needed to shut down the economy and shelter at home. But as time went on, we learned that we could move around following the CDC guidelines. We have been encouraged by the ways so many people have responded in unique ways, from providing baskets to essential workers at the hospitals, to restaurant owners finding unique ways to keep their businesses going. Our “Spotlight Articles” are about how some people have adapted their businesses to a new norm, or even opened a new business during Covid. Others have shared how they helped people in need. And others have followed a dream in spite of the setbacks. We hope you too will be encouraged by their stories. Also in this issue is our article about the iconic Greenbelt and Cart Paths, Peachtree City’s signature amenity--with a special focus on “Safety on the Paths” A huge thank you to our advertisers for their loyalty, especially during this crisis. Sue McCabe Fulfills Her 10–Year Dream During the Covid-19 Shut Down!
I
n July of 2009, Sue McCabe joined some friends from her church for a couple of days hiking the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina. They hiked for 3 days and nights experiencing the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, fireside chats, and the wonder of nature-Sue loved being in God’s beautiful, natural setting. At the end of that first experience, she began to think about hiking the entire 2,193 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine. It was not until 2011 that she was able to consider getting back on the AT. But even then, her family responsibilities would not allow her to do the 6-month hike all at one time, so she decided that she would be a “Section Hiker”. She would keep her records and maps and hike the entire AT a week or two at a time as often as she could. Between 2011 and 2020 Sue hiked the entire 2,193 miles broken into 20 section hikes with 24 different “hiking buddies”. Each buddy hiked about a week. The longest section was the last section that took 45 days to cover 394.5 miles including climbing to the top of Mt. Katahdin. During that period, the more she hiked the more she loved the challenge – the AT is much more than a walk in the woods – there are mountains to climb, rivers and creeks to ford, snakes to avoid, bears to be aware of, foot blisters, and sore muscles, soaking rains, wet gear. But that was all part of the challenge. ■ Preparing for the final section before COVID. Jump back to her hike preparation in January and February 2020 before we knew about the COVID lock
down! Sue had been making plans all winter – studying the guide books, calculating the time it would take to hike from hut to hut each day, where to pick up her supplies mailed ahead to a hostel or motel, who could hike which parts that were left and she still had almost 400 miles left to reach her goal. By February she had worked out the details to have various hikers relay the last section - each taking a few days or a week. Buck, her husband, stayed the first week to support Sue and deliver all her resupply boxes and then he returned home, supporting her from afar. ■ Then came COVID in March. The last hike was scheduled to begin in mid-July and end the first week of September with a total of 6 hikers doing 6 sections. Then she was faced with the question – do I stay at home and shelter, call all of my hiking buddies to cancel the hike and wait a year? She could not just put it off for a month or two because Mt. Katahdin is usually closed by the park rangers in late September due to dangerous weather conditions. The relay team members were coming from various places in the United States. How was the virus in their state? What were the restrictions in the last two states of her trip New Hampshire, and Maine? How would that affect their airline reservations, or COVID testing? At this point, some people would just forget the goal and put it off for another year, but Sue knew that anything could happen that might keep her from completing her trip and fulfilling her vision. She would not give in. By June Sue got commitments from all 6 “hiking

buddies” to do the relays with her. Buck rented a house and would “car-hike” taking the relay teams to meet Sue. On July 17th they began a three-day drive from Tyrone to New Hampshire, wearing masks everywhere they stopped and only eating food delivered to their car. On July 20th Buck drove her first hiking buddy to Kinsman Notch, NH to start their hike. He met them several times that week but then returned home to Tyrone. Sue said, “the White Mountains were the most difficult, and rocky terrain that I had ever encountered on the AT. To make it worse a cold mountain rain slowed us down one day, and it took us 18 hours to get to the shelter”. On the last day of August, Sue emerged from the 100 mile wilderness to rest overnight in Baxter State Park at the foot of Mt. Katahdin. On September 2, 2020 Sue put on a special T-shirt for the assent to the summit. She explained that she runs a Tennis Program for Special Needs Kids at the Peachtree City Tennis Center and that the kids were missing the fun of gathering together each week because of COVID. She said, “I dedicated my assent to the summit to my Fayette Special Pops tennis friends. We made them a video to encourage them to dream big and pursue their dreams with care, confidence, and courage during the year when we can’t get together in person.” Wearing her Special Pops T-Shirt that day Sue conquered her 10 year old goal by reaching the Summit! Sue’s story should be an encouragement to everyone – do not give up – life is like the AT – just take it one day at a time and you will conquer your goal too!

CAPTAIN TUPUA AT THE HELM AT SOMERBY
W
hen the shutdown order from Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp came down in March 2020, Tupua Ainuu, Director of Lifestyles at Somerby Retirement Community in Peachtree City, faced a difficult problem. He had to figure out ways to modify his program of providing fun activities and excursions for Somerby residents so that the activities met the new COVID guidelines. Somerby had distinguished itself as a Luxury Senior Retirement Community somewhat like a Cruise Ship on land, and Tupua was the Captain of Fun and Entertainment at the ship’s helm! To keep the Somerby Cruise party going, Captain Tupua and his Lifestyles Team had to think outside the box. In the beginning of the shut down, the team—wearing proper PPE—would visit each room and drop off daily activity sheets. When residents completed 10 activities, they would get a 10 dollar gift card. They delivered ice cream to each door from their ice cream truck cart and worked with Dining to have a weekly Wine Down Wednesday where a Happy Hour Bar would go to each room. Of course, the team could not do group activities; but because the Somerby building has four sides and each resident has their own balcony and patio, they were able to continue exercise classes, sing-a-longs, and dancing with all residents from the safety and distance of their rooms. Any activity they could do outside, they did. There
was a 4th of July BBQ where everyone socially distanced with masks. There were weekly outdoor Trivia and Friday Sing-a-longs, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day parades where residents watched from a safe distance as a parade of cars with family and friends holding signs and shouting expressions of love drove by. “This was the first time in activities history that Somerby had 100 percent participation with our many activities,” says Tupua. “My team and I would get teary every time we would do an activity on all four sides and every patio and balcony was full. They were starving for life and energy, and we were giving it to them!” As restrictions loosened Tupua and his team brought back pool classes, movies, Happy Hour with live entertainment, and a Joyful Noise Choir. “So many of my residents said we kept the life, energy and party going for them and it gave them hope and happiness during these trying times when they are separated from their loved ones and the world,” says Tupua. “It brought back a sense of normalcy.” Now Tupua, as Captain of the Cruise Ship Somerby, is looking forward, like all of us, to the future when all of the restrictions will be lifted. There will be FUN AND JOYFUL NOISE coming out of Somerby—you can be sure!

n this day of stress and division people seem to disagree over almost any issue, be it politics, religion, history, or economics. But in Peachtree City we find a different sentiment when it comes to one question, “What is the most important or outstanding feature of Peachtree City?” Almost 100% will tell you that it is our greenspace and paths. But when you ask them, “how did our greenspace and paths begin and how did they evolve?”, they will not have a ready answer. With this article our writers combined their resources and knowledge to answer those questions plus a few more.
■ 1957–In the Beginning there was a Plan. The first local land planner, Willard Byrd, working
on a project of about 15,000 acres, talked with the first investor and visionary Peter Knox, Jr. about the British New Towns. Their meeting ultimately led to the creation of a corporation devoted to building a ‘New Town’ south of the Atlanta Airport. Joel Cowan explained, “Greenbelts were at the heart of the British New Towns movement after the war. They were intended to provide a three-mile buffer around each town. Their studies indicated an ideal population size of 30,000 – 50,000 to be then surrounded by the greenbelt.” Cowan went on to say, “I used 60,000 population and because Line Creek and Camp Creeks had reserved land, this effectively created the greenbelt. The land was assembled on the basis of being an entire watershed. The watershed would be sewered, and thus more G

dense, while the fringe areas were not, and thus the greenbelt.” He continues, “To separate the villages and create the 20% greenspace, this region rolls, creating mini drainage areas which were to become flood plains. Of course, that flood plain regulation came along after I did it, and since the land was not buildable, it became major greenspace. This created connected greenspace which was the key.” In 1960 the first order of business was to build the dam to create Lake Peachtree, and establish water, sewer, and roads. During those early years natural look and pristine green corridors were less important than providing sellable lots on the lake and building critical infrastructure for active citizens.

■ The Paths – An Early Amenity That
Keeps Growing! The paths emerged organically as the number of residents grew. In the early 1960s the paths were simple pea gravel trails that connected homes with City Hall and the Peachtree City Elementary School. At first, these paths served only joggers and bicycle riders. It was not until the Flat Creek Golf Club was built that golf carts became ubiquitous on the paths. Joel Cowan had this to say about the paths, “The impetus for golf carts was stimulated when I built the golf course in 1968 and folks wanted to own their own cart to drive to the course. After the battle to get state laws changed
to allow them to operate on city streets... it was unstoppable.” When Governor Jimmy Carter signed a new law in 1974 allowing golf carts to be driven on city streets, the path system was extended to include about 10 miles throughout the heart of town. The path system also called for bridges over Lake Peachtree and over Highway 54, and tunnels under Peachtree Parkway. Cowan said, “The paths became inevitable except that without pavement, they were impracticable. Being an environmentalist from the start, I was frequently criticized for paving in the wetlands. My argument always was this was a small sacrifice to make it usable by the public.” Continued on page 10

As more residents purchased golf carts for personal use -- other than playing golf-- the developers were able to claim that the cart paths and golf carts provided an alternative form of transportation. Residents began using their golf carts to go grocery shopping, leaving their cars in the garage. Golf carts were mainstream in Peachtree City. In 1976, Joel Cowan left the Peachtree City project to be president of Phipps Land. He went on to develop Phipps Plaza, Palmetto Dunes Resort, and other landmark properties. In 1977, Equitable hired Doug Mitchell as President of Garden Cities, and in 1979 Equitable took full control of the Peachtree City development. In 1979, Doug Mitchell formed a new company, PCDC (Peachtree City Development Corp), and was awarded a contract by Equitable to manage the project. From 1977 until 1993, Jerry Peterson was the Land Planner for Garden Cities and PCDC. Peterson determined the location and development of the cart path system which continued to expand with the addition of new residential subdivisions. It was natural that the cart paths were built in the adjunct greenspaces provided by small creeks as well as Line Creek and Flat Creek. When asked about the status of the path system when he was hired by PCDC in 1977, Peterson recalled, “when I came on board the use of the paved cart path

was well established. The cart paths mainly connected the residential areas around the west side of Lake Peachtree, and the Flat Creek Golf Club and the stables in Glenloch Village on the east side.” Joel Cowan said, “more credit needs to Gbe

In 1985, Jerry Peterson wrote an article for the PCDC newsletter, “the Communicator”, explaining how the original land plan had been updated. In that article he said, “Considering 25 years of growth, the goals, concepts, and even the organizational plan, it is amazingly consistent with some of these early well-conceived plans provided by some very visionary people.” The top three land planning goals listed in that article were: 1) Protect environmentally sensitive areas; 2) Establish a continuous planning process; 3) Provide an appropriate and compatible arrangement of land uses. Today, greenspace provides shade, tree cover, erosion control, water filtration, noise buffer, and animal habitat. Our city greenspace takes the form of marshes, swamps, grassy hillsides, streambeds, lakeshores, forests, and more. Greenspace fosters hundreds of species of wildlife and indigenous plants. The multi-use paths themselves have grown wider. The path system now covers over 100 linear miles and connects all corners of the city. It is widely acclaimed for providing an alternate roadway system for pedestrians, cyclists, and golf carts while promoting
health, recreation and outdoor activities. Both greenspace and paths have become signature amenities of Peachtree City. Together they continue to increase property values and advance healthy communities.
■ Taking care of our Greenspace and Paths
– an important ongoing task. We still maintain and enjoy over 20% of the land as protected greenspace with 14,255 golf carts registered to city residents and 1,500 registered to non-residents, driving on 100 miles of multi-use paths. Peachtree City’s many ordinances regarding safe use of golf carts on the paths, and the preservation of greenspace, are strict. They are based on, “the belief that the natural environment has significant value in and of itself, and that all reasonable measures available should be used in the preservation of that environment, consistent with the continued development of a viable Peachtree City.” (Peachtree City Municipal Code Appendix B, Article XI, Division 1, Section 1101 Purpose). Peachtree City requires developers to maintain

natural vegetation, identify and protect specimen trees, and re-naturalize areas that visually impact public rights-of-way, as part of a landscaping plan that must be approved by City Planning staff. Our greenspaces are public property, and as such must remain undisturbed. Clearing or trimming of any kind is forbidden. Municipal Code establishes these protections, and the City actively works in tandem with the Peachtree City Municipal Court to level citations and fines for violators. In order to maintain control of our environmentally sensitive areas, City “Code Enforcement” personnel monitor damage in greenways, note disregard of relevant laws, and respond to reports of infractions. To address the long-term increase in volume of people and carts using the greenspace and paths, the City Council on June 18, 2020, approved plans to establish a new ‘Cart Path Ambassador’ workforce that will function under the auspices of City Code Enforcement. The force will employ a handful of part-time staff familiar with City geography and operations, to monitor protections for greenspace and provide visibility and enforcement. Continued on page 14

The City Council recently made the non-paid, volunteer position of Park Enforcement Office an official job. Their job is to help the police and the code enforcement officers patrol the 100 plus miles of paths. Unofficially, they are called “Cart Path Ambassadors” since they are there to help and give assistance to our citizens and youth with any problems they might have on the paths, as well as, bringing violations to the attention of their supervisor, Tim Maret.

■ Staying safe in the Greenspace and on the multi-use paths.
More people, bicycles, and golf carts on more miles of paths points to an increasing need to make sure everyone is aware of safety on the trail. We all need to know what the “rules of the road” are and what the laws require us to do. The Peachtree City Police Department provides the primary law enforcement, whether in greenspace or on the paths. In recent times PD has added more patrols and specialized vehicles to meet these expanding needs. You will see Peachtree City police officers on bicycles, specialized golf carts, ATVs, and even high-speed boats.

The heart symbolizes two messages: First, when viewed from us above, it shows our appreciation and full of gratitude for you! Second, when viewed from below, is a reminder that hope, and love will conquer fear and uncertainty in the days ahead as we return to our normal lives. Finally, the “Missing Man” formation is a patriotic dedication to all our fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Learning Music continues on-line with Music Schools International
A
fter 10 years of teaching general music, band, and chorus classes in the public schools, Brian Simmons set his sights on changing the way people experience learning music. In 2008 he and his wife, Nicole, started Music Schools International (MSI) in Peachtree City to offer a variety of music classes, camps, and workshops. Even when the COVID–19 pandemic shutdown took away the in-person music instruction that is the core of their school, they never lost their resolve of providing quality music education to children, teens, and adults in a fun, progressive and un-pressured way. Xavier Yoder, one of the school’s senior students, was preparing for his college music education. MSI transitioned him from in-person classes to online classes, using several mediums which ensured him a continuance of high-level music training. “We used zoom.us as the primary live weekly class platform, alongside other technological resources to make his classes well
prepared, challenging, engaging, and fun,” says Brian. "Xavier had access to music materials through our Online Customer Portal, where he could view and download sheet music as well as links to backing tracks, and YouTube video recording links for listening assignments. Besides that, Xavier had access to his weekly assignments and homework on our Online Customer Portal to make sure he had clarity on his progress.” During these COVID–19 days, MSI continues to encourage students to experience performing. Xavier submits formal video performances of himself playing his repertoire pieces to the music school. “This not only allows our students to continue their live performance experiences,” says Brian, “but teaches them how to use different technological devices to produce the best audio/video quality of their playing which is helpful in preparing them for future college demonstrations.” Even in a pandemic, the music never stops.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT IN A PANDEMIC
P
PTC ADVENTURES
eachtree City resident Aleksey Synkor had a good idea. He wanted to start an internet based rental business that delivered to the great outdoors. “We enjoyed the water sport of paddle boarding,” says Aleksey. “There are wonderful lakes in the area, but no type of boat rental available. We decided to give it a try.” His PTC Adventures, a stand up paddle board and kayak rental business, began in 2019; but a few months later, the pandemic hit. For Aleksey, his business was able to maneuver around some of the biggest pandemic obstacles. First of all, everything can be done online. Customers select the paddle board or kayak they want, schedule their time, sign waivers, and pay—all online. Secondly, safe social distancing is easy. Customers come to Aleksey’s shop to pick up the boat, and the activity is done outside on a lake at a safe distance from other people. When they are finished with the equipment, customers call Aleksey, and he meets them at the warehouse to receive the rental back. 20 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2020 • WINTER 2021 |

PTC Adventures offers year-round, day and half-day rentals for hardshell and inflatable paddle boards, kayaks, sit-on-tops, and canoes. Each paddle board rental includes a paddle, personal flotation device (all sizes available), whistle, and leash, as well as 10 minutes of on-land instruction for beginners. PTC Adventures also sells paddle boards and offers stand up paddle board lessons during the summer months through the Peachtree City Recreation & Special Event Department online Registration System. All equipment is provided and included in the class fee. “Paddle boarding is an outdoor sporting activity that provides a full body and cardio workout. It relieves stress and is very friendly for beginners,” says Aleksey. “Plus, we have the beauty of doing it on the beautiful and pristine lakes of Peachtree City and Fayette County! Connecting with nature on the water is an advantage for our business in these stressful times.” www.sup-ptc.com. “Like us”” on the

Retailers Keep it Going
o survive in these difficult times, Peachtree City retailers have implemented new and innovative ways to serve their customers while adapting to social distancing and other safety guidelines. With the shopping experience limited, The Avenue Peachtree City re-imagined its numerous community activities to fit social distancing restrictions. “Instead of our summer movie nights at the Gazebo, we had three drive-in movies during the summer months,” says Jessica Peterson, Marketing Coordinator at The Avenue Peachtree City. “Guests reserved a social distanced parking space, and our Avenue restaurants and eateries offered free delivery to their vehicle. We raised over $1,500 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and provided a fun but safe evening for the community.” The Avenue also hosted a Fall Concert, featuring The Voice’s Megan Danielle and American Idol contestants Andrew Weaver and Isaac Streetman—once again adhering to social distancing. In the weeks ahead, The Avenue is expecting a couple of new store announcements, and Jessica suggests residents stay tuned for holiday and other events. 26 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2020 • WINTER 2021 |

Smith and Davis Clothing has been a fixture in Fayette County since 1965 when it began selling overalls, shoes, and dress apparel to the mostly rural community. The family owned store has never been shy to change with the times and was quick to adapt positively to the pandemic. “We’re an actual store, not a virtual store,” says Tony Davis. “We prefer customers coming in and trying on items and being fitted for shoes; but you have to do what it takes to survive.” With that in mind, Smith and Davis made some changes. The store, which was closed for 38 days in March and April, set up online shopping as well as same day delivery to the surrounding area. It also took the down time to clean, sanitize, and paint. Once the store reopened on May 1, masks and social distancing measures were put into place. Its two hugely popular and heavily attended outdoor “tent sales” were cancelled for the year. To offset that, several racks inside the store were marked “Tent Sale,” offering items at up to 50% off. “We are happy to see our customers again,” says Tony. “Believe me, we are smiling behind these masks.” “Like us”” on the

>> shopping IN TOWN DUE TO COVID-19, SMITH AND DAVIS NOW OFFERS BOTH ON-LINE AND IN-STORE SHOPPING FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS!
F
Tony Davis
or over 50 years, Smith & Davis Clothing Store in Fayetteville has provided personalized product knowledge for all of their loyal customers. Tony Davis said, “That’s just the way we’ve always done business – we treat all of our customers like our old friends.” But that stopped in March 2020, when the order to shut down the store came down from the governor. Tony had to shut down completely for 38 days. What could he do to provide service to his customers and keep the business alive? Everyone in the retail industry has been talking about on-line sales becoming the big thing and that “brick and mortar retail businesses were going away. So, Tony gathered his family and leadership team together to discuss what could be done. The only thing they could do was turn to an on-line store! They rushed together a newer version of their existing website to accommodate easier on-line purchases and then they set up their own delivery service for the Fayette area. But they quickly found out that the
on-line business was a completely different kind of business. Tony said, “when they loosened the restrictions, and allowed a specific number of people in the store at one time and set up social distancing, masks and other guidelines, we were more than happy to comply. Our customers, began coming back and soon we were almost normal.” Smith & Davis still has that on-line store. You can make your purchases from your home because Tony Davis learned that he could adapt his business and survive with an on-line store. However, he will tell you that he would rather see his customer in person. And his customers would rather come in personally and discuss their purchases with him or one of his employees, look at the product, and make their decision with full confidence built on years of trusting Smith & Davis. www.smithdavisclothing.com. d

DINE IN OR TAKE OUT TO SUPPORT LOCAL RESTAURANTS T he pandemic era that we are living through has not been easy for the restaurant industry. Restaurants closed their doors for several weeks during March and April when the state of Georgia mandated stay-at-home orders due to COVID 19. Once restrictions were modified, however, many Peachtree City restaurants found ways to adapt their operation, serve their loyal customers, and survive the pandemic. Some restaurants sold their food supplies directly to customers who called in orders. Others reduced their staff and offered curbside delivery.
Now, most Peachtree City restaurants are operating in some fashion, while still adhering to state guidelines. Many have reorganized their in-dining layouts to accommodate social distancing guidelines. Where possible, restaurants have added lots of spread out, relaxed outdoor seating. Many restaurants also have adjusted their hours, enhanced their online takeout ordering procedures, and implemented delivery within the area. As we make our way through this pandemic,
remember and support your community restaurants in whatever way you feel comfortable—either dine-in, outside dining, or carry out meals with inside or curbside pickup or delivery. Restaurant gift cards are a good idea, too. There is usually no expiration on when they can be used. Like the rest of us, our restaurant neighbors are looking forward to the day when it is completely safe to be out and about dining with friends and family. ¨

Full Steam Ahead for Froyos & Vinos Owners P
Josh Weaver
eachtree City residents Josh and Nikki Weaver created Froyos & Vinos because they were looking for a new restaurant concept for the area. The restaurant’s beach vacation theme morphed out of ideas and discussions about a fun place with treats and "dessert" for both kids and adults. The Weavers were ready to open their restaurant when the pandemic closed everything down in March. As soon as restrictions began to lift at the end of April, they faced a hard decision: do we open or wait it out? Do we hire staff, buy inventory, and advertising, or just pay the rent until the COVID is past? The Weavers took the plunge, and Froyos & Vinos did a slow open. “The pandemic made it even more apparent that we needed to open a place where there would be a “no worries” atmosphere,” says Josh. “Froyos & Vinos makes you feel like you’re on vacation!” The Weavers went full steam ahead with beachy colors, surfboard tables with umbrellas, Adirondack chairs, and cozy fire pits for warmth on chilly nights. Since the restaurant is self-serve, it provides gloves for customers to wear. Tables are spaced out, and masks are requested. Froyos & Vinos offers 18 flavors of self-serve frozen yogurt with over 40 toppings, including vegan and no-sugar-added options. Its Tiki Bar serves adult beverages that are fun and unique. You can choose from liquor infused adult yogurts, frose’, draft beer, and a variety of wines on tap. The menu has over 20 “Tipsy Tiki Froyos,” including the “Key West,” the “Pelican Colada,” and the “Samoan Sunset.” Once the Peachtree City Gateway Bridge opens this fall, Josh says access to Froyos & Vinos on a golf cart will be easy for all MacDuff neighborhoods as well as the north side of Peachtree City, including Kedron. He says, “All you will have to do to take a trip to the beach is cross the bridge to Froyos & Vinos!” froyosandvinos.com.

PREPARE FOR WINTER
Collectively speaking, people are probably spending more time at home than they have for years. It has given us plenty of time to look around and plan and accomplish a few projects. One is getting ready for winter. Here are a few simple, but necessary, tasks to help prepare your home for cold weather. ■ Check Your Heating System There are a few things you should do to your heating system before temperatures start to drop. If you are not comfortable doing these yourself, call a heating and air specialist to do the maintenance for you. ■ Check the Fireplace and Chimney Have a chimney sweep check and clean your fireplace. Creosote buildup and debris, such as leaves and bird nests, can be a fire hazard. ■ Prevent Pipes from Freezing When water freezes, it expands. To prevent frozen pipes, insulate them near windows, doors and in unheated areas of your home. Also, disconnect your garden hose from the outside faucet. ■ Check Batteries According to the US Fire Administration, heating
causes 27 percent of structure fires during the winter months. Make sure all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. ■ Prepare for a Storm Power outages are common during winter storms, so be prepared with a survival kit, including bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, first-aid supplies, batteries, and a smart phone charger. ■ Reverse Ceiling Fans If you have ceiling fans, there should be a switch to make the fan blades run clockwise. Running the blades in a clockwise position during the colder months can push heated air down. ■ Inspect Insulation If your home’s insulation is insufficient, your heating system will have to work overtime. Add some
insulation to your attic, walls and crawlspace to save money on heating costs. ■ Check the Roof Check for any loose or missing shingles. Also, clear leaves and debris from the roof and your gutters. ■ Trim Tree Limbs Heavy snow is unusual in Peachtree City but ice is not. Trim dead tree limbs so they do not fall and damage your home during a winter ice storm. If you need to remove large limbs or a tree, it is best to hire a professional. ■ Protect Patio Furniture Cover your patio furniture with a tarp to keep it safe from the elements and rust. If you have room, store your furniture in a shed or garage.

A PLACE TO LEARN
ith Fayette County schools being virtual or a hybrid of virtual since the outbreak of COVID 19, parents in Peachtree City have been faced with how to create a schoollike atmosphere at home. This goes beyond the kitchen table. It isn’t just a place for homework. It is a place for full-time learning anywhere from two to five days a week. It is a place that is spacious enough for a computer and books, has a sturdy desk and comfortable chair, and no distractions. Longtime residents Chris and Stephanie Herrera set about several months ago to provide such a place for their 5-year-old son Elias, a Kindergartener at Huddleston Elementary. Elias, who has been diagnosed with ADHA and hypersensitivity issues, needed to be in a place where he could have consistency in order to learn and stay focused. The Herreras had determined that online learning was a good option for Elias, but the COVID 19 pandemic outbreak added to their motivation. “We wanted to set up Elias to be successful for virtual school now and on a long term basis,” says Stephanie, “so we approached how to do it very seriously.” The Herreras selected a space in their home as a learning area—a third bedroom 40 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2020 • WINTER 2021 |
PCM Fall 2020 Winter 2021.indd 40
that was little used. Then Chris got busy with the design, plans, and construction of what would become “Elias’s place to learn.” Chris built floor-to-ceiling shelves covering one wall and a built-in desk in the corner of the shelves next to the window. “Everything is adjustable,” says Chris. “As he grows older and outgrows the desk, we can remove it, build a bigger desk, and do some rearranging.” “Elias loves it,” says Stephanie. “He knows that it is his. He loves his bouncy chair. When he gets fidgety, he can wiggle around on it.” The Herreras have placed books, toys, and school related objects within his reach and their own collections on the upper shelves, but mainly it is Elias’s space. It is a perfect size, wide open, comfortable, and without distractions. “This space is what best works for him,” says Stephanie. “It is Elias friendly. COVID 19 is a big part of why we did it right now, but this school space works best for our family and sets him up for longterm success.” ¨ G G “Like us”” on the

arly in March 2020, when COVID-19 hit, Renee Dillard was trying to figure out how she could help. She had heard how hard doctors and nurses were working around the clock with hardly a time for a break. There were several doctors and nurses who went to her church, and she was thinking of them. As she was grocery shopping, it occurred to her there was a way to help. She said to herself, “I’ll spend $200 of my own money and put together some snack baskets for the hospital workers and ask others to donate, too.” She thought that if people contributed, she would continue making baskets and taking them to the hospital; if not, it would be her one-time gift. She gave her first basket to her neighbor, who is a doctor at Piedmont Fayette, to take with him to work. Her second basket went to her friend who is a nurse at Piedmont Newnan. From there, she made six more baskets for each hospital. Renee explains, “At first I didn’t know what I was doing or where to go, so I just took the baskets to the emergency rooms and said these are for you.” After that first trip, the hospital put her in touch with a volunteer coordinator who would meet her when she had baskets to deliver. 44 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2020 • WINTER 2021 |
PCM Fall 2020 Winter 2021.indd 44
The response from the hospital staff was overwhelming. It encouraged her to post notes and photos on her Facebook page to let her friends know that they could be involved by donating, too. She said, “They began donating, and I kept making up baskets and delivering them. Some people donating a basket asked for it to be delivered to specific areas because they had a friend working there.” As of the first week of September, Renee has delivered 124 baskets, containing individually wrapped snack and lunch items and various drinks. Also included in each basket were notes expressing thanks and offering prayers. This is an ongoing project, and Renee is committed to making up baskets and delivering them to the hospitals as long as donations keep coming. If you would like to participate, you can send your donation to: Cash App. $grtas1988; Venmo. renee_ dillard. TURNING OBSTACLES INTO OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

arlene Drew’s upbringing gave her an up front look at obstacles, opportunities, and serving. At the start of the pandemic from a conversation with a local business owner with a heart filled first with cares for her staff, coupled with thoughts of ensuing business challenges, this lingered in Darlene’s head. She pondered: “What can I do to help?” Having served for years as a leader, Darlene looks at life from a leader’s lens. She reached out to other leaders to join a virtual call described as Leader’s Helping Leaders To Succeed to offer solutions amid challenging times. The responses to help came very quickly! Throughout the pandemic, Darlene offered complimentary services and significantly reduced costs for other services. She remarked, I was trying to help in some way. While the pandemic certainly presented obstacles, her decision was to turn those obstacles into opportunities to lift people up. Real Life Center – Helping People Through Life’s Challenges
Real Life Center’s Executive Director, Cathy Berggren, best explains their mission, “Life is filled with uncertainties. People from all walks of life face difficulties, no one is immune. Some families we serve need help with food or assistance paying their rent or utilities, especially since the impact of COVID-19 on our community. Others need help getting back on their feet after challenges such as divorce or suffering a major illness.” The RLC is a place of hope for our community, providing a space for neighbor to help neighbor. Their programs are designed to help families reach stability and achieve long-term change.
Please consider partnering with us to provide hope to hurting families by serving at the Center, orchard or garden. Food and financial donations are also needed.
