Letter from the Booster Club President

Charlotte Latin Sports Fans,

There is so much to celebrate this year! Congratulations to all our athletes, coaches, and families. It was amazing to watch spring programs like girls lacrosse and soccer best the Chargers for state championships & our boys golf team win the title for the first time in 29 years. Cheers to our track & field conference winners (Morgan Smith, Paige Fletcher, Keller Hitzemann and Jackson Scott) and the NCISAA Golf medalist (Aston Lee). Congratulations to the undefeated junior varsity boys lacrosse team and the middle school conference champion boys tennis and boys golf teams.

We have been so fortunate to have over 150 Charlotte Latin coaches support, encourage, and inspire our students this year. Coaches spend more time with our children than many of us do, and we are so thankful of the love, support and guidance given beyond the x’s and o’s. We also appreciate David Gatoux and our athletic directors for the endless hours they put into ensuring our Charlotte Latin athletes have the chance to find this success.

I may be biased – but truly believe we have the best Booster Club in town. The executive committee was on overdrive this year, and their hard work is setting Latin up for success now and in the future. And many thanks to the magazine team, who has put together another phenomenal sports publication capturing our athletes in action.

The Booster Club capped off 2022-23 in May with the Hawkspys, which returned to Theis Auditorium for the first time since 2019. It was an unforgettable evening celebrating our coaches, seniors and state champions. Thank you to our Hawkspys chairs, Gabi Gorelick, Jennifer Clutter, Ashley Smith, and Stacey Hitzemann, for making this year’s celebration extra special for our Latin school community.

Congratulations, thank you, and go Hawks!

Andrew’s favorite Latin baseball moment is something we can probably all relate to: He was so happy to return to the diamond his sophomore year after losing the 2020 season to Covid. If he could leave a gift behind for the team, it would be an endless supply of balls to replace the ones lost in the lake. Andrew would like to thank his dad for introducing him to the game of baseball and coaching him through his younger years, and he thanks his mom for always cheering him on. Although Andrew has battled injuries that have hampered his playing time, Coach Cooke says Andrew has found other ways to contribute and has offered great support and encouragement to his teammates. Andrew will be attending Clemson University to study business next year and is looking forward to going to school with his brother again.

Nathan earned All-Conference honors last year batting .348 with a .459 on-base percentage. He had to work through an injury at the beginning of this season, but he’s back in action and his relaxed personality provides a fun, calming presence for his teammates on the field and in the dugout. Nathan’s favorite Latin baseball memory is winning playoff games, especially against one conference foe in particular, and a gift he would like to leave the team is a discount to Taco Bell. His advice to younger Hawks would be to take school seriously and put in your full effort….at least until the second semester of your senior year. Nathan will be attending Virginia Tech next year and plans to study data analytics and statistics.

An All-State, All-Conference, and All-Observer honoree last year, Ryan has solidified his status as a top pitcher. When Ryan is on the mound, we can count on a quality start that gives us a shot to win. He is holding opponents to a .162 batting average so far this season, and he has been a great leader and mentor to the younger pitchers in the program. Ryan’s favorite Latin baseball memory was sweeping the Bucs in a doubleheader during last year’s senior night. His advice to younger Hawks is to “Strap in and enjoy it, because it’s gonna be a blur.” Ryan would like to thank his parents for always believing in him, and he is planning to attend Hampden-Sydney College next year.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Your Hawks finished with a 4-16 record on the season but this young squad was competitive in every single game. With only one senior playing significant innings due to injuries, a ton of young players got valuable playing experience in some big games. Senior Ryan Sweet led the team offensively with a .275 batting average and logged 51 innings on the mound as well. Juniors Miles Miller and Tommy Beason alongside sophomore Avery Booker were also big offensively for the Hawks. On the mound, eight Hawks saw innings led by Sweet and juniors Andrew Kreissl, Jake Creamer and James Peters. The future looks bright as a ton of production from this year’s team will return next season providing great leadership.

JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL

We had a good season as evidenced by being in every game and competing to the final out regardless of who we were playing. Along the way, the team showed its true character and heart while also greatly improving as baseball players as the season went on. Throughout they remained positive and supportive, pulled for each other, and continued to be open to growth. Overall, they represented Charlotte Latin School with class and dignity even in the toughest and most trying moments of the season, and I couldn’t be more proud.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Middle School baseball finished a great season with a 10-2 record. The Hawks tied for the regular season championship and finished second in the conference tournament. Highlights of the season included two wins over Charlotte Christian and a come from behind win over Providence Day in the tournament semi-finals to avenge their only regular season loss. The team was led by a very strong 8th grade class and the future of Latin baseball looks strong.

Team co-captain Jackson Adams has been a member of the golf program for four years and his leadership this entire season was instrumental in the Hawks winning their first state championship since 1994. His consistency on the course earned him All-Conference recognition this spring. Jackson will move to Athens next fall when he attends the University of Georgia.

Team co-captain Davis Sayman is a two-time All-State and three-year 1st Team All-Conference honoree who won the NCISAA Championship as a sophomore, shooting a 6 under par 66 that included seven birdies on the back nine at Greensboro Country Club. Davis led the Hawks to their first state championship in 29 years and capped off three straight years ranked in the top 10 stroke differential for the season, finishing T6 in this year’s state championship. Davis will be continuing his education and his golf career at Davidson College next year.

Jake is a Latin Lifer and has been a member of the golf program for 2 years. Jake also competed for the Hawks in cross country and track and field. We will miss his easygoing nature and his ability to hit the golf ball a ‘country mile’ and the sound it made off the face of his club. Jake will move to Chapel Hill in the fall to study at the University of North Carolina.

VARSITY GOLF

The Hawks were young and the Hawks were deep. The varsity team was led by seniors Davis Sayman and Jackson Adams, whose consistency and experience were the foundation that our talented newcomers built on. Freshmen Aston Lee, Henry Holland, Til Wagner, and Griffin Cheatwood proved themselves to be tough competitors throughout the season and earned their spots on the championship team. The Hawks finished the NCISAA Division I Championship in first place with a score of 292 to win the program’s first state title since 1994. Aston Lee shot 69 to finish in a first-place tie for individual champion with Christ School’s Taylor Kuehn that was decided with sudden-death play starting at the 10th tee. Aston won the first hole and the individual medalist title.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GOLF By

The Middle School golf team finished the season with a 7-3 record and a victory in the GCMSAA Conference Tournament match. Everyone on the team contributed to the success of the season and I was most impressed with the improvement shown across the board. The guys played with class and represented the school well. Our top four scorers for the season represented the team at the Conference Tournament. Those players were, in order, Graham Wagner, Will Moody, McNair Beaver and Rob Lesley. The four combined for a score of 166 and a victory over second-place Holy Trinity. Will Moody earned medalist honors with a round of 34. We wish the 8th graders success next year on the varsity team and, with a strong batch of 7th graders, the future of the program is in good hands.

Alex joined the Latin community and became a starter on the varsity team as a freshman. He leads the team in scoring this season, and his coaches say he has continually improved his skills and his knack for finishing. He is a strong, but quiet leader, who clearly cares for everyone on the team. If Alex could leave one gift behind for the team, he would leave them a new turf field for practice. His advice for younger Hawks is take advantage of your time and enjoy childhood. He would like to thank both of his parents, as well as Coach Sip, for supporting him throughout his lacrosse career and providing him with an amazing high school experience. Next year, Alex will be attending the University of Denver.

After being injured through his junior season, Bryce’s favorite lacrosse moment so far was having 19 saves against Marvin Ridge in one of the first games of the season. He says it, “felt nice to play very well in a Charlotte Latin high school game again.” To younger Hawks, Bryce says, “The trick to gaining confidence in the lacrosse field is gaining confidence in other aspects of your life. The stronger you feel physically the stronger you will play mentally.” Bryce would also like to thank Coach Sip for supporting him through two missed seasons: one due to Covid and the other to injury. And for helping him whenever he needed it. Coach Sip describes Bryce as a strong team leader, whose toughness and example in the goal raises the level of play for the entire team. Next year, Bryce will continue his academic and lacrosse careers at High Point University.

Harrison is recognized by his coaches as having an outstanding work ethic. Harrison started playing lacrosse in Upper School and quickly became a solid defender, but still worked tirelessly to improve. Harrison has been a great role model and friend for his teammates. If he could leave one gift for the team, he’d give them Chick-Fil-A gift cards because that’s where they eat before late games. Harrison would like to thank Coach Sip for teaching him everything he knows about lacrosse and for shaping him into the person he’s become. Harrison says he has always looked up to Coach Sip and wishes him a great retirement after this season because he truly deserves it. Next year, Harrison plans to study business or sports management at Ole Miss.

New to the team this year, Jerry’s well-timed jokes and stories have added levity to the team environment. Coach Sip says Jerry has put in extra individual work and has shown a lot of improvement in his lacrosse skills. He has good speed and makes the most of his opportunities to play. Jerry’s favorite moment with the team so far has been the trip to Savannah. His advice to younger Hawks is to cherish your time at Latin. Jerry says he has had such a great time at Latin and he wishes he had taken time to enjoy it more rather than worrying about the next upcoming thing. Next year, Jerry plans to attend East Carolina to study finance with the intention of becoming an investment banker.

RECAP: LACROSSE

VARSITY BOYS LACROSSE

Early in the season, we try to get a good mix of solid teams to compete with while we build confidence and chemistry. We did that through the first 8 games, going 6 - 2. The trip to Savannah solidified the team’s chemistry; the boys had a great time together and developed a strong bond as a group. My favorite game, and one I will always remember, was our last regular season home game against a big, athletic Rabun Gap team. I thought our team came together and left everything on the field. There was a true desire, they had the spirit, energy and emotion that I looked for all season. The second Rabun Gap game was also a lot of fun – winning a playoff game is always nice and it was our first one in several years. We took some lumps this season, but what makes me happiest is hearing a player say, “This was the most fun season I have ever had,” and “I’m so glad I played. These guys are awesome.” Being a leader of a group that loves each other is so much fun and it is a good way to go out as I head into retirement!

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS LACROSSE

The JV boys lacrosse team had an undefeated season, going 7-0 with key wins over Marvin Ridge, Charlotte Christian, and Providence Day. The successful season was made possible through hard work, high energy, and a true sense of team over self. A core group led by Burke Denny, Carson Clutter, and Rollins Elliot, helped set the tone for a promising future for the lacrosse program here at Charlotte Latin.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS LACROSSE

The Hawks wrapped up the 2023 season with a 4-6 record. While our record was not what we’d hoped for, the Hawks played hard in each contest and were very competitive throughout. This season was expected to be a rebuilding year after conference title-winning campaigns in 2021 and 2022, and a large number of young players were asked to step-up and contribute from the first day of practice. Many veteran players were tasked with taking on new roles to help the team and did so admirably. We’re looking forward to seeing what our departing 8th graders can do at the JV and varsity level next season.

Coach Williams credits Jane with being a role model for her hard work and willingness to do anything that is asked of her – attributes that have allowed Jane to grow more confident and aggressive on the field. As a gift to the team, Jane would leave behind lockers for all the players. Her advice for younger Hawks to take time to enjoy the little things and celebrate them because time goes by fast. Jane’s favorite lacrosse moment so far was the team’s victory over Charlotte Catholic this season, and she would like to thank her parents for their encouragement and for pushing her to be her best.

Crawford’s favorite lacrosse moment was the state championship win her sophomore year when all the student supporters rushed the field after the game. She would like to thank the coaches for helping her grow as a player the past four years, and she advises young Hawks to have a lot of school spirit, because it makes going to sporting events a lot more fun. Crawford is a versatile player whose willingness and ability to fill positions as needed has made her a big asset. She is tenacious on the draw circle and is one of the team’s top scorers over the past two years. Crawford would like to leave the gift of another pet lobster to the team before she heads to Dickinson College to continue her education and play lacrosse.

Regan is a leader on and off the field. A strong communicator, she helps direct the defense during games and is sought after by both teammates and coaches throughout the season as a sounding board. Regan’s gift to the team would be the world’s best air freshener. Her advice to younger lacrosse Hawks is to make the most of Coach Hunter’s circuits and running by smiling through it and working hard to get them done. Regan’s favorite lacrosse moment was the victory over Charlotte Catholic because it brought the team closer together and motivated them for games to come. She thanks her family, friends, and Coach Williams for setting high expectations, supporting her through rough days, and always cheering her on.

Described by Coach Williams as a “lockdown defender,” McClain has shown incredible improvement over the last two years, developing into a force to be reckoned with. In spite of her toughness, McClain is always smiling and upbeat – bringing a positive energy to the team. Her advice to younger Hawks is to cherish every moment with friends and family, and be willing to take risks. McClain cites the win over Charlotte Catholic as her favorite Latin lacrosse moment, and she would like to leave the team the gift of comfortable chairs to replace the benches in the locker room. McClain thanks her friends, family, and teammates for being her biggest supporters on and off the field.

Belle has been in the lacrosse program since seventh grade, and although her schedule presented some conflicts this year, she wanted to remain involved. The coaches have enjoyed having her on the sidelines helping with stats and game day logistics, and she has become the team’s biggest cheerleader. Belle would like to thank her mom for pushing her to follow her passions and to do every activity to the best of her ability. She advises younger Hawks to keep a positive mindset, and she would like to leave the team a full turf field for practices.

A three-sport athlete for the Hawks, Eleanor has become an off-ball force in lacrosse who has honed her ability to feed the offense. Coach Williams says Eleanor has played a big role in helping teammates understand and implement new strategies, all while bringing humor and positivity to every practice and game. Eleanor’s favorite memory is the program’s first win over Charlotte Catholic and she advises young Hawks to get involved with Latin sports for the amazing friends and memories you will make. She would like to leave behind air freshener for the team locker room, and she thanks her parents, coaches, and teammates for always supporting her and making her love lacrosse.

Although she has a quiet demeanor, Lea is described as the team’s main voice on offense by her coaches, who also call her their best player on the ride. Lea fights for every ground ball and possession on the field, but she is also a calming force who is kind and empathetic. Like her fellow seniors, Lea really enjoyed defeating Catholic, but she also says the team dinner followed by locker room decorating at the beginning of the season will stick with her as a favorite memory. She would tell younger Hawks to cherish the small moments with your teammates, because the seasons and years fly by. Lea thanks her parents and her older siblings for their support.

RECAP: GIRLS LACROSSE

VARSITY GIRLS LACROSSE

The 2023 Season was better than we ever expected. The pressure to continue to win a championship was heavy on the shoulders of this team. Our words of focus this year were composure, tenacity, and integrity. This team faced the season with all three in mind. We implemented a new offense that generated more than 375 goals by 14 different players and, even more impressively, more than 200 assists by 14 different players. We had 150 saves and were undefeated in the CISAA and the NCISAA. We were led by great seniors who always put the team FIRST. This team beat Charlotte Catholic for the first time in program history and was dominant in our championship game vs Providence Day. This team was kind, funny and supportive. They were extremely coachable and just a joy to be around.

JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS LACROSSE

The JV girls’ lacrosse team had a great season! The team competed throughout 14 games and left it all out on the field, with a final record of 8-4-2. When facing challenging opponents, the girls competed with determination, hustle, and persistence. They also showed great teamwork. The team was committed throughout the season to strengthen and develop their skills, increase their lax IQ, and dominate on the field. On our last home game, we honored our two 11th graders with a “Junior Night” and a win over the Knights. We look forward to next season!

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS LACROSSE

The Middle School girls’ lacrosse team was a combined 7th and 8th grade team for the 2023 season. Many of the girls were coming to lacrosse for the first time and we saw great improvement through the season. With ten returning players from the 7th grade team a year ago, we welcomed seven new 8th graders to the team. Additionally, we had ten 7th graders join them this year for a combined roster of 27 players. Playing against area local schools and club teams, we finished the season 5-12-1. This was an energetic and athletic team that were never at a loss for positive spirit and support for their teammates.

Congratulations! Congratulations!

Described by Coach Searles as both the team energizer and the team’s glue, Leiden’s energy, focus and competitive spirit stand out in both practices and in games. She is a determined athlete, always working to improve, and her ability to bring everyone together and make both players and coaches laugh enhances the team spirit. Leiden’s advice to young Hawks is that you don’t have to be the best player on the team to make an impact. She would like to thank Coach Smith for being her soccer mom, Coach Searles, Coach Kelly and Coach Paguibitan for making her senior season extra special, and Coaches Masters and Alt for always having her back.

Mayes is a three-year starter whose commitment to the team is evident in the constant support she gives her teammates and in her willingness to switch her position to goalkeeper this season to fill a need. Coach Searles says Mayes has exceeded any expectation and done remarkable things as the keeper for the Hawks. If she could leave a gift behind for the team, Mayes would give them a food locker and a disco ball. She would like to thank her sister, Eleanor, for being her role model. Mayes says she admires Eleanor’s perseverance and hard-working attitude, and her commitment to excellence. Mayes would also like to thank her parents for their support.

MAYES FISHER-CAPTAIN

Great leaders know what needs to be said, and when to say it. Allison is that leader for the Hawks. She is always willing to address an issue for the betterment of the team with a communication style that fosters respect and camaraderie. On the field, Allison is a consistent force in the back-field. She takes pride in keeping the ball out of the Hawks’ goal, but also in thwarting opponents’ attempts to even get a shot on goal. Her favorite Latin soccer moment so far has been when Lucy and Clara were trying to pop a balloon and it accidentally hit Ella in the face. Her parting gift to the team would be a couch to chill on in the locker room.

Coach Searles says Clara sets an example daily by doing everything asked of her, and doing it well. Her competitiveness in everything from small team activities to practice drills to games raises the level of everyone around her. Clara’s favorite Latin soccer moment so far has been the beach trips and spending the weekend with “the best teammates in the world”. If she could leave a gift to the team, she’d give them an unlimited supply of her F-I-P messages, which are the special notes she writes on her teammates’ wrists before every game. Her advice to younger Hawks is to always try new things, because you are capable of more than you think.

Ella’s favorite Latin soccer moment came in the state semifinals her sophomore year, when the team scored with five minutes remaining to win one-nothing and advance to the championship. While she describes the win as “amazing,” it was the bus ride home that is her favorite memory. With music blaring and lots of screaming, Ella loved the excitement and energy shared with her teammates. Coach Searles says Ella is a servant leader who organizes team activities, stays after practice to pick up equipment, and cleans up the sideline after games. On the field, it’s Ella’s passion for the sport that stands out, and her support of her teammates. Ella would like to thank her brother, Kyle, for showing her how much fun school soccer can be and for being one of her biggest supporters. She will be following in family footsteps as she heads to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next year to continue her education and her soccer career.

RECAP: SOCCER

VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER

One Team. That was the theme going into the 2023 state final. It was the perfect description of what this season came to become. Building on the success of years prior, the difference this year was that the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team was One Team and played for each other and for Charlotte Latin. After a tremendous season, the Hawks accomplished what some thought couldn’t be done: Defeating the third-ranked team in the country by winning the NCISAA state title 2-1. Leaning on our experienced leaders in our senior and junior classes, it gave us the confidence and ability to bring along our sophomore and freshmen players to meet the standard the team set early in the season. This team never dropped their standard, then went beyond what was asked of them to meet the standard each day. It was a tremendous season, ending in a fantastic way! Congratulations Hawks!

JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER

The 2023 JV girls’ soccer team got off to a flying start this season playing some fantastic soccer. For such a young team we played with such confidence and creativity, and always with discipline and grace. By mid-season the team had developed great chemistry together and it showed during the games. We were so competitive, other teams found it difficult to break us down with our strength and desire to maintain possession of the ball. Over all, this season was a major success as the results showed the team worked so hard and at the same time had so much fun.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER

We had a special group of girls this season, and they came up with some incredible moments! We had no shortage of amazing plays including a game-winning goal in the last few seconds, many goalsaving tackles, free kicks from distance, and team combinations into beautiful goals. Our games were a lot of fun to watch! What stands out to me the most this year is how well our girls grew together as a group and supported each other throughout the season. Our girls were always looking out for each other and offering a helping hand or a hug when someone was having a tough day. We finished as runners-up in the conference this season, which is a significant improvement from last year. We recorded 7 shutouts, and even picked up 4 away wins! We hope to see our 7th graders out again next season! We will miss our 8th grade squad, and wish them the best as they move up!

congratulations Spring College Commits

Hampden-Sydney College - Tennis

Thomas started playing tennis when he was around five or six years old. He was inspired by watching his parents, who were getting into the sport. The thing Thomas loves most about tennis may also be the thing that sets him apart – he loves challenging matches that extend to three sets. Most players would prefer to win quickly in two, but Thomas says those long matches bring out his true fighting spirit. He plays every point as if it were his last, and he has brought that energy into the program. An All-Conference player who has overcome an early season injury to return to the court, he has been a key part of our team’s success the past four years.

Recruiting interest came early for Thomas, who was hoping to follow in his family’s footsteps and pursue a collegiate career. During a campus visit his junior year, Thomas was impressed with the core traditions of brotherhood and respect, combined with a well-rounded curriculum that he was introduced to. He liked the emphasis on values that was integrated in the academic and athletic cultures, as well as life outside of those arenas. He met future teammates who were hardworking and welcoming, and a coaching staff that demonstrated a clear belief in his ability from their initial meeting. It’s no wonder, then, that he chose to study business and economics while continuing his tennis career as a Tiger at Hampden-Sydney College next year

Congratulations Thomas!

Elon University - Basketball

The Hull family has been part of the Latin basketball program for many years, and we may have Ned’s older brothers, Will and Brad, to thank for Ned’s success. He cannot remember a time that he wasn’t around the game, which initially meant shooting baskets during the breaks in his brothers’ games, or trying, unsuccessfully at first, to score over them in the backyard. Eventually though, Ned grew, both figuratively and literally. He has always loved to shoot, but he learned to appreciate the sport for the team chemistry, the bond it takes to form that chemistry, and the results that can come from it. Ned says, “When five guys work as one, it is a beautiful thing to watch.”

As a Hawk, Ned has inspired us all with his work ethic. It’s a rare day that Ned Hull isn’t getting in some shots in the Belk, usually before the rest of the school arrives, and his 1200-plus points scored for Latin is a testament to the work he’s put in. A two-time All-State and All-Conference honoree, we will miss Ned’s leadership, consistency, and his uncanny ability to knock down the big shot. When evaluating his options for next year, Ned was impressed by top-of-the-line facilities embedded in a beautiful campus, and a coaching staff that genuinely loves the game and is happy where they are. But the biggest draw may have been watching the team, loving the way they played, and feeling like he would fit right in. He’ll only be a couple of hours north on 85, so make plans to take a drive and cheer on Ned as a Phoenix at Elon University next year.

Congratulations
Ned!

Washington and Lee University - Track & Field

I like to call him the “Swiss Army Knife,” because Will has become such a versatile athlete. Initially drawn to track as a way to stay in shape for cross country and swimming, Will found his passion in the multi-faceted sport that allowed him to jump and run and throw, all within the same competition. As a two-time AllConference cross-country runner, Will seemed a natural fit for the distance events, but he was open to trying new things and discovered that sometimes the most uncomfortable situations lead to the most rewarding experiences - including becoming the first champion decathlete in school history. Will won the 10-event competition at last year’s Raven Multi Championship and was second this year, exceeding his previous best score by more than 400 points and finishing in the top 3 in eight out of ten events.

When it came time to choose his next adventure after graduating from Latin, Will was intent on finding an opportunity for balance. He wanted something far enough away that it felt adventurous, but also had a sense of familiarity. He was looking for academic rigor that would also be manageable. And he wanted a broad liberal arts education that still made it possible to spend time focusing on a specific area of interest. It was an added benefit, or perhaps the deciding factor, that Will felt at home on a track in the midst of the Shenandoah Valley. We look forward to seeing the new heights he’ll attain as he heads to Virginia next year to study and compete at Washington and Lee University.

Appalachian State University - Cheerleading Sam started competitive cheerleading when she was in first grade. You could say she tumbled into it. While doing cartwheels on the playground, a friend told Sam that she should join her cheer team, and Sam went home and told her mom. That set the wheels in motion, and Sam cheered competitively for eight years before becoming a sideline spark plug for the Hawks as a freshman.

Throughout her Upper School years, Sam has been a major contributor to the development of the cheer program. Her sharp motions, powerful tumbling, beautiful jumps and outstanding stunt technique opened up possibilities with choreography and new team skills. Sam says that cheering for Latin has allowed her to do what she loves in a super positive environment with supportive teammates, and there’s the added bonus of cheering on her other friends on various teams.

The collegiate recruiting process for cheer has the extra challenge of being late in the year, after most seniors have already made their decision. Sam tried out for several schools, but one program in particular stood out for the warm welcome of the coaching staff, the family-like feel of the team, and… even the possibility of cheering in the snow. Sam is looking forward to being in the mountains and cheering on the Mountaineers at Appalachian State University next year.

Congratulations Will!
Congratulations Samantha!

Coach Banda describes Janie as a tough player whose support of her teammates and dedication to the good of the team make her a natural captain. Janie’s favorite Latin softball moment so far was bonding with her teammates on the overnight trip to Cary this year. If she could leave one gift behind for the program, she’d give them new tees and an improved batting cage. Janie’s advice to younger Hawks is to act confident even when you’re not and tell yourself that you can do it – your mentality has a big impact on how you play. Janie would like to thank her parents for their support and for showing up to every game, and to her coaches for helping her improve over the last four years.

When the team needs a rally call, Emily is usually the one to provide. She is the biggest supporter of her teammates and can be counted on to offer encouragement and support whenever it’s needed. Ready to take on any position without hesitation or complaint, Emily is a true team player. Her favorite Latin softball moment was a recent overtime victory, when the team came together, literally, to celebrate and cheer loudly in one big clump. Her advice for younger Hawks is to stick together with your teammates and lift each one up. A gift Emily would like to leave the team is a combination of determination and positivity. She’d like to thank Coach Spero for guiding her through injuries.

Affectionately known as Olive, she named this year’s overnight trip to Cary as her favorite Latin softball moment so far. If she could leave behind one gift for the team, Olivia would give them a lifetime supply of sunflower seeds. Known for her easy connection with the younger players in the program, Olivia has worked to improve her outfield skills and would like to thank her father for playing catch with her and helping her overcome her initial fear of the ball.

VARSITY SOFTBALL

This season, our team’s emphasis was on improving each day, winning each inning, and putting the ball in play and forcing our opponents to make the play to get us out. The girls focused on making contact and less on getting a hit every at bat. This goal ended up reducing our number of strikeouts per game significantly, which really helped towards the end of the season when we were pushing to the playoffs. In 2022, our team finished with a state ranking of 265. This season, we ended with a state ranking of 177. It was our first quarterfinal appearance since I began coaching at Latin. I am so proud of all this team has accomplished and I am excited about what the future holds.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL

The 2023 Middle School Softball team had success in many ways this season beyond the scoreboard. Developing offensive and defensive depth throughout the roster was a preseason goal and the ladies didn’t disappoint. Seventh graders Caroline Coble, Ceci Clifton, Anna Edwards, Hannah Rankin, Leela Rhodes, Emma Griggs, and Harris Hollmeyer were all starters and led the team in multiple stat lines. Eighth grade leadership continued with Sophie Edwards, Sophie Dunn, Caroline Shamblin, Amalia Bordoloi, and Jordan Ramesh both on the field and in the dugout. One of the year’s highlights was the momentum of many games being swung back into the Hawks’ favor by the energy and enthusiasm brought by Clara Ragsdale, Izzy Edwards, & Lexie Misocky. This team was very special and has laid the groundwork for continued success for softball at CLS.

Thomas possesses a drive and competitive presence that have made him one of the Hawks top players in singles and doubles since his freshman year. He has a coach-like ability to analyze opponents, which has been very helpful to his teammates. Thomas recalls this season’s opening match victory over Carmel Christian as one of his favorite Latin tennis moments. His advice to younger players is to observe how you respond during tough matches, because that is indicative of how much resiliency you’ll have off the court when hardships arise. As a parting gift to the team, Thomas would leave positivity, and also a ton of Motts fruit snacks. He’s heading to Hampden-Sydney College to study business and economics or psychology and to play tennis as a Tiger.

Highly respected for his strong character and academic excellence, Charles has a wry sense of humor that keeps the team laughing. On the court, he has a beautiful, classic style of play and is the consummate sportsman. Charles chose the overnight trips through the years as his favorite Latin tennis memories, citing the camaraderie and team bonding that occurred. He advises younger Hawks to strive for victories, but not to let that goal get in the way of enjoying each season and every match. Have a good time with your teammates. Charles will be attending Northwestern University to study mechanical engineering.

A combination of power, finesse and speed are Emilio’s strengths on the court, combined with an energy that fuels the team during matches. Emilio recalls playing a state quarterfinal at the Duke Tennis Center as one of his favorite memories, along with winning the deciding doubles match against Myrtle Beach during one of the Florence tournaments. As a parting gift to the team, Emilio would leave the USTA women’s 50+ state champion flag in the locker room. Emilio advises up-and-coming players to compete as if it’s your last time doing it, but have fun along the way. He is heading to the University of Alabama next year.

As a player, Hayden’s steady improvement throughout his time as a Hawk resulted in significant contributions to team wins with his strength in the middle of the lineup in singles and doubles. Off the court, Hayden is likeable, friendly and funny, qualities that help connect everyone in the group. Hayden’s favorite CLS tennis memories are winning a doubles match in the quarterfinals against Cary Academy and playing the teamfavorite “touch the fence” game in practice. His parting gift to the team would be unlimited snacks and he would advise younger Hawks to let go of bad matches and bounce back with a positive attitude. He’ll be attending Auburn University next year.

VARSITY TENNIS

This year’s boys’ varsity team finished strong, surpassing its fifth seed in the NCISAA state tournament with an upset over Cannon in the quarterfinals to reach the state semifinals. Challenges were everywhere this season, including home/aways with several extremely strong teams in our own conference, in the East, and the early season loss of senior and Hampden-Sydney commit Thomas Davis to injury. It was next-manup with Andrew Chen, Emilio Llerenas, Hayden Willett, and freshman Luca Bravo leading the way. Senior Charles De Mey and sophomore Chanakya Ayinala added a spark once the team was back at full strength for the playoffs. This team showed grit and perseverance and their efforts paid off.

JUNIOR VARSITY TENNIS

The JV boys’ tennis team achieved a very good record of 10-1. Junior co-captains Nathan Butler (line 1, 8-3) and Solomon Boakye (line 5, 10-1) challenged their teammates to persevere and to stay in the moment (i.e. play the next point and forget about the past points). As a result, the team outplayed and outscored every school that they faced. As a team, they won 68 of the sets played (69%). The singles lines were rounded out by Andrew McDonald (line 2, 9-2), Rossi Bellavia (line 3, 5-3), Nishanth Gaddam (line 4, 4-5), and Trevor Hoffman (line 6, 5-5). Contributing back-up players were Landon Broadwell, Syan Gulati, Clayton Hahn, Riley Phelps, and Raaj Thakur. Congratulations to all on a great season.

MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS

This season will be remembered as a success for a variety of reasons. First, all thirteen players on our team gained experience from competing in both singles and doubles throughout the season. Everyone on our team contributed directly to winning a match this year! With only four returning players, most of our athletes had never competed with one another. This season was a success because our team’s culture promoted a transition from being classmates to becoming teammates and friends off the court. An added bonus, and a final reason that this season will be remembered as a success, is because we had an 11-1 record and we won the Conference Championship! Good luck to our eighth graders as they move on to the Upper School and I’m excited to see this talented seventh grade group compete again next year!

Coach Schuster was impressed with Luke’s studious approach to the pole vault, using video to dissect technique and make significant progress in his first year trying the event. His favorite track memory is setting, and achieving, a goal of clearing 8 feet in his first-ever track meet. Luke’s advice to young Hawks is to stay positive, even when you’re struggling. His parting gift to the team would be permanent measurements on the pole vault runway, and he would like to thank Coach Schuster for teaching him how to do the pole vault. Luke is planning to study mechanical engineering at Clemson University next year.

A favorite track memory for Colman was starting his junior season with a win in the 4x800m relay. Described as a tough, dedicated competitor, Colman trains hard and accepts any assignment he’s given. His advice to young Hawks is to be open-minded and try new things, because you never know when you’ll discover a new hobby that grows into your passion. Colman would like to thank Coach Weiss for being a great coach and for dedicating so much time to teaching him how to be a supportive teammate and a good person overall. Next year, Colman will be studying at Texas Christian University, where he also plans to continue creating video content for Horned Frogs athletics.

Described by his coaches as a servant-leader with the heart of a champion and the ability to ground the entire team, Esrom transitioned from distance events to sprints his junior year and had tremendous growth. His favorite track moment was qualifying for states last season, and he has now etched his name in CLS history as one of the Hawks’ fastest quarter-milers. Esrom would leave the team shaded benches for a place to rest between reps, and he advises younger Hawks to keep going…perseverance pays off. Esrom is thankful to the coaches for believing in him, to his teammates for making practices enjoyable, and to past upperclassmen who inspired him. Next year, Esrom will be attending Wake Forest University and majoring in health and exercise science.

Tyler is a great all-around athlete, a top-notch football and basketball player, who’s also pretty fast on the track. He thrives in competition and repeatedly rises to the challenge, helping to elevate relays and push fellow sprinters. In spite of an early season injury, Tyler continued to support and encourage his teammates. His favorite Latin track and field memories come from last year’s experiences at the Raven Relays. To younger Hawks, Tyler has this simple advice: Get involved in Latin sports and have fun! He thanks his parents for always believing in him and encouraging him to follow his dreams, which he will do next year as he heads to Furman University and will compete for the Paladins in football.

A strong, multi-sport athlete, Coach Weiss describes Hampton as an outstanding leader who is especially adept at mentoring teammates and strengthening the entire team. The track and field staff appreciate Hampton’s tough competitive spirit and the coach-like ability to help bring out the best in everyone Hampton’s favorite track memories are the overnight trips to meets because of the time spent with teammates sharing laughs and having fun. His advice to fellow Hawks is simple: Never give up. Hampton thanks his parents and coaches for pushing and supporting him, and he plans to study business next year at Auburn University.

Tai’s approach to running distance and middle-distance events can be described as passionate, driven, and even intellectual. He possesses a strong competitive fire alongside a keen analytical mind, which inspires him to continually seek challenges within the sport. This sets a great example for his teammates, and he is the ideal training partner for athletes wanting to get the most out of their workouts. Tai has been a mainstay of the cross country and track teams throughout his Latin career.

Nelan stands out for his consistent dedication to running, and for the spirited enthusiasm he brings to practices and races. He has steadily improved over the course of his cross country and track career at Latin. Nelan is a terrific teammate, an outstanding student, and a real pleasure to coach. We appreciate his deep commitment to our program and his devotion to our program.

Meticulous and precise, even in warmups, Connor’s attention to detail has allowed him to develop running form that is among the best Coach Moorman has ever coached. He gives 100% every practice and his time improvements have reflected his work. Connor’s favorite track memory was the Ravenscroft meet last season because the longer overnight trip brought the team together and made them closer. His advice to younger Hawks is to set goals based on how you can help your team rather than specific times or event results, because supporting the team is what makes it thrive. Connor thanks his parents for always cheering him on, and Coach Malai for being a guiding mentor over the past four years. He is heading to Wake Forest University next year.

A sprinter, a thrower, and a jumper, Aaron has a uniquely positive nature, a calm disposition, and a ready laugh that strike a perfect blend of zen and levity. Coach Gee says Aaron applies his engineering mind to combine intellectual analysis with athletic prowess in the high jump. Coach Ray describes Aaron as fierce competitor who sets a bar and continues to raise it. And Coach Moorman thinks he is a model student-athlete who has been a joy to work with. Aaron is heading to NC State next year.

Initially using track as a training tool for soccer, Dylan’s dedication to winter training and consistency in workouts has helped him improve his speed, strength, and running mechanics. Coach Weiss says Dylan exemplifies the patient, consistent work ethic necessary for success.

Dylan would like to thank Coach Weiss for being flexible and for developing him into the runner he has become because, as Dylan says, “We both know I was a work in progress my freshman and sophomore years.” His advice to young Hawks is to be fully committed and develop mental toughness, which you’ll need to fight through fatigue and pain at the end of races. He’s heading to the University of Tampa to major in sports management.

In only his second year on the track team, the coaches have been impressed with George’s athleticism and dedication to tough, consistent training. If he could leave a gift behind for the team, George would give them the strong community and team spirit that have been present during his track experience. He would advise younger Hawks to push your limits, see what you are capable of and be willing to take risks. George would like to thank Coach Weiss for getting him involved in track and helping him navigate how to successfully compete and be an impactful member of the team. George plans to attend Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut next year.

It is truly impressive to see a senior, instead of coasting his way through the spring, attempt a new challenge, and that is exactly what Wyatt has done. A tough, powerful athlete, Wyatt trained all winter and came into the season ready to do big things in the 800 meters. He has given depth to the mid-distance group and is a great training partner for his teammates.

Jackson’s favorite Latin track moment is a recent one: Winning the conference championship on his first try in the triple jump. In a season with injury set-backs, Jackson’s success is a testament to the hard work he put in to rebuild and rebound. A cheerful teammate known for cranking up the tunes at practice, Jackson’s parting gift would be the energy and laughter that brings a team together. He would like to thank Coach Malai and Coach Taye for helping him become the best possible athlete and his parents for supporting him through the journey. Jackson will be attending Purdue University, where he plans to study computer graphics and walk on to the track team.

George has emerged as one of Latin’s best middle-distance runners, putting up impressive numbers in the 800m. He keeps his teammates focused while encouraging them through tough workouts and helping them have fun along the way. George’s favorite part of Latin track and field has been getting to know “a really awesome group of people.” As a parting gift, he would leave the legacy of the incredibly supportive dynamic the current team has established. George would like to thank Coach Weiss for his caring and genuinely compassionate nature that has pushed George to be his best self. Next year, he will be attending Sewanee: The University of the South.

Will is a unique and versatile athlete, becoming the program’s first true decathlete. He serves as an ambassador for all events, encouraging his teammates to try something new, while finding connection with competitors and cheering them on as well. His advice to younger teammates is to remember that the most fun events are often the ones that initially feel uncomfortable. Will’s parting gift to the team is “the team,” which is the nickname for his muscle roller since everyone has used it at one time or another. It should serve as a reminder for how strong a team can be when it works as a group. Will thanks Coach Weiss for always having his back and for his “infinite wisdom and dad jokes.” Will is heading to Washington and Lee University to learn, continue to compete in track, and hopefully study abroad.

Olivia came onto the scene as a sophomore, and immediately showed talent and self-discipline in her approach to distance/mid distance events, putting together many impressive race performances. She is a great friend and supporter to all of her teammates, and we are grateful for her contributions in cross country and track.

Joy joined the track team as a senior and brought a lot of energy and positivity to the throwing group. She is uplifting to her teammates and adds to the camaraderie of the track team.

Coach Nick Ray describes Sydney as a mentor who galvanizes the group of throwers on the team and approaches her events with focus, determination, and attention to detail. Sydney says her favorite part of track and field is the laughter and fun she shares with her teammates during practice, which cheers her up even on the rough days. If she could leave behind one gift for the team, she would give them a new discus ring. Her advice for younger Hawks is to explore your passions, commit to them, and work hard. Sydney would like to thank Coach Ray for making practice such an enjoyable and encouraging environment, and for helping her uncover the specifics of throwing technique. Next year, Sydney will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study psychology.

Ellie is a new addition to the track team this year, but as an All-Conference field hockey player, she had speed and quickness that made her a natural for the sprint events. She became an integral part of the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays, and her jovial spirit has added a lot of joy to the team. Ellie’s favorite track moment so far was the Ravenscroft Cheeto, and she would like to gift the team with a new pink relay baton – specifically her own relay teammates, who she thanks for the fun times and the support. Next year, Ellie will be attending Wake Forest to study biology.

Lucy is a field hockey player who decided to give track a try in her senior year. She quickly embraced the opportunity to learn to sprint, and she competes with joy, enthusiasm, and a team-first mentality. Her favorite track moment was her first-ever meet, when she experienced the fun environment and incredible helpfulness and encouragement from teammates. Lucy advises younger Hawks to enjoy their time at Latin, even when practicing, because it flies by. She would like to thank her parents for their support and giving her the freedom to try different activities. Lucy will be attending the University of Mississippi next year.

An enthusiastic and competitive athlete, and a compassionate, effective leader, Liv’s contributions to both the track and cross country teams have been many. She advises younger Hawks to try as many things as you can, and to embrace the community wholeheartedly, which wisdom she has embodied in her time at Latin. Liv’s favorite track and field moment is the cheer that she and Avery created and perform at every meet. If she could leave the team a gift, she’d give them really cute, comfortable sweatpants. Liv is grateful for the encouragement she received from both Dr. Gee and Coach Weiss, and she thanks them for always making her smile. Liv will continue her education next year at Wake Forest University.

Helen’s favorite track moment so far is a very memorable 3200 at Myers Park this year. The race was started four times due to a gun malfunction, a fall at the start (hers), and lightning one-lap in. On the fourth try, it began to rain. Helen says the rain felt fantastic and she ended up winning the race with a personal best time. She would like to thank Coach Weiss and Coach Mercer for having faith in her abilities and helping her develop as an athlete, student, and person. A disciplined, patient, and thoughtful athlete, Helen has become a truly elite competitor this year, and she will continue to compete at the next level as she heads to Williams College in the fall.

Described by Coach Weiss as a winner, both in competition and beyond the race, Mary Cate is known for her passion for running, her excellence in the classroom, and her fierce devotion to her teammates. She says running and laughing with her pace group is always the best part of her day –especially that workout when the distance group had to run with their mouths full of water. Mary Cate would like to leave the team a huge student section to cheer them on. She thanks Coach Weiss – for being such a thoughtful and attentive coach, her friends – for making her laugh so hard she can’t run, and her parents – for making all those pre-race pasta meals. Mary Cate will continue her academic and athletic journey at Colorado College.

As a newcomer to the track team last year, Morgan applied the skills she’d honed as a competitive gymnast into a new event – the pole vault. She had an incredible junior season, but has taken her talent to the next level as a senior and has now broken the school record twice. In fact, that’s her favorite track moment so far. Her advice to younger Hawks is to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. Morgan is grateful to Coach Shelley for teaching her so much this season and being so supportive, and she thanks Coach Yu and Doc for all of their help – and for the new poles Doc loaned to the team. Morgan is heading south next year to attend Auburn University.

Avery fosters an environment where veterans and novices alike feel welcome, which empowers other athletes to try something new. She encourages everyone, including competitors from other teams. Although her favorite moment was achieving a long-sought personal best goal in high jump this year, Avery advises young Hawks that track and field is about more than results – it’s about the joy of being outdoors with your friends. Avery’s gift to the team would be a pair of Hokas for everyone. She would like to thank Dr. Gee for his patience with the “craziness,” as she calls it, that she and Liv bring to practice. Avery will be studying business next year at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Coach Schuster describes Macy as highly coachable and persistent, which is important in an event like pole vault. Macy never gave up and was always encouraging to others, which will undoubtedly help her as she becomes a counselor at Camp Illahee after a decade of being a camper herself. She is excited to give back and help younger girls have the same great experiences there that she had. Macy will be attending Wofford College.

RECAP: TRACK & FIELD

VARSITY TRACK & FIELD

The track team had a surplus of new athletes this season. The returning Hawks did an amazing job mentoring, supporting and leading the newer/younger athletes. Every single athlete, who stayed the course and finished the season, improved on their individual marks. In additional to the numerous personal records (PRs) that were set, three school records were broken this season:

1. Girls Pole Vault - Morgan Smith (10’8”)

2. Girls 3200m - Helen Hurden (10:59.42)

3. Boys 4x800m - Jackson DiRoma, Webb Kiser, Edward Guggenheimer and Will Vaughn (8:09.97)

Two of the main themes/mottos for this season were to be intentional with every drill, practice and competition because intentionality leads to results, and to get better every day, no matter how big or small the feat. The fact that every athlete improved over the season is a testament of their dedication to those mottos.

MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD

The Middle School track team was comprised of some seasoned athletes who were continuing to build on their success in their specific events, and many who were new to the team looking to understand the fundamentals of track & field while identifying their strengths and most relevant skills for optimal success. The group dynamic was one of inclusion and the more experienced members stepped up to mentor and lead the group with enthusiasm and confidence. It was a great season with a variety of success stories along the way. The coaching staff was very pleased with the positivity and goodwill that was the overriding mindset of the team as a whole. There were well-deserved wins and many PR’s to be had throughout the season with a great final performance at the championship meet. Congratulations to all!
