Letter from the Booster Club President
My name is Jane Hunter and I am the 2022-23 Booster Club President and a die-hard Hawk fan. My children and their friends tease me for getting excited about everything from Friday night winning touchdowns to spotting “Home of a State Champion Hawk” signs in yards around Charlotte.
We are fortunate to have fantastic Team Parents and an amazing Booster Club working behind the scenes to support our athletes, coaches, and the athletic department. Thank you to all the helping hands (you know who you are) who give so much of their time and talents to our school.
Below are several ways the Booster Club will support Charlotte Latin athletes in the 2022-23 academic year:
• Provide concessions for our athletic fans throughout the year
• Host events to educate and celebrate our athletes
• Distribute senior pennants and championship signs
• Create player buttons for our supporters (620 and counting)
• Design and digitally publish a fall, winter, and spring magazine celebrating Middle School, JV, and Varsity sports teams
• Distribute the Class of 2023 year-end keep-sake
• Continue our “Good Works” to help the athletic department and teams
We are looking forward to Lower School Spirit Night (December 2), Winter Sports Showcase (January 20), and a new mental wellness event with Mission34 (January 21). Follow us on Instagram at @cls_hawks_boosterclub for the latest about upcoming opportunities and these events.
Congratulations to all our fall athletes, especially the NCISAA State Champion Girls’Cross Country team, and good luck to the winter Hawks!
Head of School
The 2022–23 school year and fall sports season are off to a great start. Our student-athletes are participating in great numbers and contributing to the life of Latin with their dedication, energy, and passion. Equally, our fans are coming out in record numbers to support them. Nothing builds a wonderful sense of community like athletics. I am grateful to the coaches and trainers who create such a positive environment for our student-athletes to compete and play. Latin is lucky to have such a dedicated staff of adults who help provide lasting memories for our students.
I am also grateful to our Booster Club leadership and volunteers. Latin’s Athletics program offers so many opportunities for our students, and we could not organize all of these teams without the Booster Club volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to the school. Thank you for all you do to enrich our school — your hard work is noticed and appreciated.
Thank you, Latin community, for including my family and me on this incredible team. We are blessed to be a part of such a special place.
Go Hawks!

Congratulations! Congratulations!
Sam demonstrates exceptional talent in her sharp motions, powerful tumbling, beautiful jumps, and outstanding stunt technique. Beyond her technical skills, she is a spark plug for our team - constantly encouraging and helping others and setting the bar high. Sam is fabulous in front of the crowdmaking personal connections and always challenging the fans to support the Hawks. She earned First Team All-Conference honors the past two years and received the team Impact Award as a junior.
Jane is a joy to coach! A fiveseason cheer veteran, Jane is the total package with her strong cheer and dance technique, her strength as a base in group stunts, her exciting tumbling skills and endearing personality. Jane earned All-Conference honors the last two years and was selected by her teammates for the “Hawks-on-Three” award for displaying charisma, commitment, and character. She is a natural leader and athlete who makes sure everyone on the team feels valued and appreciated.
(L-R) Janie Williams, Sam Alexander, Emily Hidell, Jane Cotchett, Kayla Middendorf, Marley Shyer SAM ALEXANDER-CAPTAIN 1st Team All-Conference, CISAA Cheerleader of the Year 1st Team All-Conference JANE COTCHETT-CAPTAINAfter two seasons on the winter squad, Emily earned the team’s Breakthrough Award for significant improvement in motions and backspotting technique, and we were thrilled when she joined the fall squad this year! Emily’s positive attitude and genuine kindness make her a fantastic teammate, and her enthusiasm while performing is infectious. Emily co-chairs the squad spirit and philanthropy efforts, serves on the Student Athlete Leadership Team as a representative for the softball team, and does it all with a smile.
Kayla is a role model for all Charlotte Latin athletes. She is always present, usually the first cheerleader out of the locker room, and takes advantage of the offseason to improve her strength and tumbling skills. Kayla’s extra hard work and dedication have paid off! A Breakthrough Award recipient last fall, Kayla is a standout in the Strength Center and a natural performer with exceptional crowd presence. We are so proud of all that Kayla has accomplished and can’t wait to see what her future holds.
Marley joined the squad as a junior new to Charlotte Latin and was immediately embraced by her teammates. It was an unconventional transition from an ice hockey player at her previous school to a cheerleader at Latin, but one that Marley made with ease. She worked hard to gain tumbling skills and her strength is a tremendous asset to her stunt group. Marley’s willingness to move from back-spot to base this year is admirable and has helped take the squad to new heights. We will miss Marley’s grit, enthusiasm and dedication next year!
Janie is a fan favorite, particularly with our Lower School students, who all seem to know her. She takes the time to speak and encourage all young Hawks. In her third season with the squad, Janie has developed into a fearless flyer who is always open to trying new skills. Janie’s work ethic combined with her sweet, playful personality have enhanced our practices and energize a crowd, especially when flipping off the top of a pyramid! Her kind heart and warm smile will be greatly missed!
VARSITY CHEER
The fall varsity squad was comprised of 13 veteran cheerleaders and three new faces. With this extensive experience and leadership, the team was able to move quickly into advanced group stunts, pyramids and tumbling sequences. The cheerleaders were excited to fire up the Hawk fans under the “Friday Night Football Lights” and enthusiastically supported fellow athletes in a variety of fall sports. The team enjoyed painting faces for Touchdown Tailgate, welcoming 30 Junior Hawk cheerleaders to the track for the Homecoming game, and “flying” all six seniors on Senior Night. We were particularly proud of our performance at the first all-school pep rally in 3 years! GO HAWKS!
Don’t let the fear of falling keep you from flying.

Olivia is a natural runner, with a graceful, fluid stride and toughness in any racing situation. She has impressed her coaches since she joined the team as a sophomore, and has been a vital contributor to our success ever since. Olivia holds a place on Latin’s All-Time Top 25 list, a spot earned through her self-discipline and passion. An excellent example for her teammates, we believe Olivia is a lifetime runner with many more impressive achievements to come. Congratulations Olivia!
Zach’s positive attitude and earnest desire to contribute to the team have marked his work in cross country throughout his middle school and varsity seasons. He always puts forth maximum effort and he takes the time to get the little things right – like using proper technique during drills and strength and mobility work. Zach is a strong athlete and a wonderful teammate, and we appreciate his contributions to the cross country program. Thank you, Zach!

From her freshman year when she led the girls team in Zumba classes at team camp, we knew we had struck gold with Liv on board. Thank you, Liv!
Any successful team needs a leader like Hampton, who can rally the troops and get everyone moving toward a common purpose. He is a strong athlete who has competed in cross country and track and field since middle school. Hampton has great empathy for others, and is always looking out for the well-being of the team. He takes the initiative to not only train hard himself, but to bring others along as well. He has been an ideal team captain in his senior season. Congratulations Hampton!
Esrom joined the cross country team as a freshman, left for a while, and now he has come back to us as a senior. He is a special young man with an aptitude for hard work and an appreciation for the many gifts of the sport. His first love is the long sprints in track and field, and he is using cross country to work on speed, strength, and endurance. Any time Esrom walks into a classroom, a practice session, or a team competition, he will have the effect of making the group better, and we are grateful for his contributions to the cross country program.
Tai is a thoughtful, enthusiastic, funny, and diligent young man, who shows up every day with his signature flowing hair and fanny pack, ready to go to work. His coaches and teammates love him, and he pours himself into the challenges of cross country with zeal and positivity. Tai’s coaches are grateful for his ability to be a positive example and do whatever it takes to make the team better. He is the ultimate teammate and friend. Congratulations, Tai!

Helen has achieved this through steady self-discipline over the course of each of her cross country and track seasons. She remains humble, kind-hearted, and the epitome of the student-athlete as she excels in the classroom as well. Congratulations, Helen!
Nelan’s quiet dedication throughout his years in our program has grown into an important leadership role in his senior year. Not only does Nelan give his best effort in every practice and race, now he has assumed the role of helping to mentor, pace, and encourage his younger teammates. We appreciate Nelan’s full embrace of - and commitment to - our program’s values. We are grateful for all of his hard work and enthusiasm. Thank you, Nelan!
Mary Cate defines excellence in all phases of her life as a student, athlete, and citizen. Running is not just something that Mary Cate does; it is part of her lifestyle and part of her soul. Her training ethic is exemplary, and she fosters close relationships which are the hallmark of any successful team. All-Conference since her freshman year, a team captain, and a member of the All-Time Top 25 list, Mary Cate has made her mark as a program legend. Thank you, Mary Cate!
Connor takes the initiative to not only set a great example in training and competition for his teammates, but he also reaches out to them with words of encouragement and help if they are struggling with the challenges of distance running. In an early season race, he took it upon himself to help pace a freshman while offering words of encouragement throughout the course. Connor never asks for much, nor does he draw attention to himself. He just shows up, works hard, and makes everything around him better. Congratulations, Connor!

In cross country, he became an immediate competitive contributor as a freshman, and he has climbed the performance ladder ever since, earning All-Conference honors last season and joining the Latin All-Time Top 25 list. Will earned team captain honors as a junior, and his work ethic and leadership skills are helping a young, talented boys team to reach its promise. Congratulations, Will!
VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY
The Hawks concluded a hugely successful 2022 cross country season at the NCISAA Championships in Greensboro on October 28. Latin’s girls won their second NCISAA state championship within the past three years, putting the finishing touches on a dominant season in which they won three large invitationals as well as the CISAA Conference Championship where Senior Helen Hurden was a first place finisher. The boys’ team steadily improved throughout the season and finished sixth at the state championships, moving up from their pre-meet seeding and achieving six out of seven personal best times. With only one senior among the boys’ top five runners, their upward projection is expected to continue. Both teams are filled with athletes who have a genuine passion for the sport of running. Team camaraderie is high, and the Latin cross country program is poised to thrive for many years to come. All-State honors go to Mary Cate Kiser (10th) and Helen Hurden (4th).
MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Middle school cross country had a great 2022 season! As a team we were 32 strong, which is one of the largest groups Latin has ever had in MS! Although we train for races and we train to win, our primary goal as a team is to develop a love for the sport, to build relationships of mutual trust and respect among team members, and to develop a sense of belonging to a larger community of athletes. Throughout the season, our athletes’ times steadily improved as they learned strategies to excel as a team and encouraged each other to meet the physical and mental challenges of the race. The coaching staff is proud of all of our athletes’ accomplishments and their growth as a team. The boys’ were led by seventh grader Jackson Kerr, who finished 20th in the highly competitive Hare and Hounds Invitational, and finished 9th in the GCMSAA Championship with a PR of 11:20.7. The girls’ team was led by seventh grader Naomi Chandler at the Hare and Hounds race and by eighth grader Caroline Staffieri at the GCMSAA Championship, where she finished 21st with a PR of 13:44.2. Nearly everyone achieved a personal record at the GCMSAA Championship, a truly outstanding and exceptional accomplishment for our team. The most successful race of the season for our MS athletes was the Murdock Relays. A CLS MS girls and boys team finished 3rd overall in the relay and our success at this race is attributed to amazing team dynamics and the way our athletes encourage and support one another. Go Hawks!
The real purpose of running isn’t to win a race, it’s to test the limits of the human heart.

dance
Congratulations! Congratulations!
Olivia is an extremely dedicated dancer whose hard work has paid off. It has been an honor for her Latin dance coach and teammates to watch her grow into the confident, successful dancer she has become. Olivia’s leadership, organization, support of her teammates and assistance with choreography have all shown that she can be counted on. She has earned the respect and love of the team through her kindness and encouragement, and we will miss her terribly.
Agatha, or Aggie, has a passion for dance that was evident from the beginning. Her talent is equally evident, and nothing seems too challenging for Aggie to execute. Her natural ability combined with her readiness to work hard, her quiet leadership combined with her dynamic technique, and her willingness to support the team in every capacity earned her the trust of her peers and an open invitation to return to the CLS dance room as an alumna.

The Dance Team kicked off the season with an intensive at Jami Masters School of Dance, led by Top Cat Zaria Fuller and former Top Cat Coach Nicole Smith. It was an honor and pleasure to have alum (and Broadway star) Sterling Masters Deeney back at Latin to choreograph for our team during a two-week long bootcamp. Even though our fall team was smaller than usual, the girls worked hard and their efforts and determination showed during performances on the football field. I am proud of every single one of them! We are looking forward to the winter season with a few new additions to the team.

Jada joined the Latin girls’ golf team her junior year. She is an excellent athlete and could excel at any athletic endeavor. Jada has a powerful swing which enables her to hit her driver a mile! Her strength combined with a positive attitude and calm demeanor on the golf course contributed to steady improvement and lower scores. Jada has many intellectual interests including being selected for the CLS fab lab program and landing a biomedical engineering internship with Enventys Partners. Congratulations, Jada, and good luck as you move forward from Latin.

The team goal for the season was to qualify for the NCISAA State Championship, and we almost made it! Freshman Kelsey Sciacca qualified and junior Pari Haritham and freshman Drue Amin just barely missed the cut by one place. Three players are required to make a team, so Kelsey competed at states as an individual and represented the Hawks impressively, shooting 78 to finish in a three-way tie for tenth. Overall, it was a great season with a young team of eight girls, with two freshmen and a junior providing most of the scoring. This enthusiastic young team has a very bright future!

Biz fully embraced her role as captain and leader of the JV team last year, and has made a seamless transition to varsity as a senior. She is an intelligent defender, who reads the game well and distributes with precision. Her upbeat contributions are a big part of who we are as a team, and her exemplary demonstration of humor, support and positivity keep this squad focused on staying together and believing in one another.
Clara joined the varsity team as a freshman and has been an increasingly integral part of its success ever since, earning her the captain’s role this year. A natural leader, and commanding midfielder, she made All-State as a junior and leads the team in assists this season. Clara has the rare ability to turn a game on its head, and she consistently sets the tempo and energy for everyone else to follow.
Kate was a JV captain with Biz last year, and as a senior has worked her way into being a starting forward on varsity. Kate’s attacking performances for our team have been so impactful this season that she has now has her own elimination move named in her honor. Kate is like a ray of sunshine, and her warm personality helps bring our whole team closer together.
CAROLINE SUMICHRAST ELIZABETH NEELY CLARA JUCKETT – CAPTAINIn her second year as our team manager, Regan is an essential part of this program. She keeps the varsity team functioning on game day with her statistical analysis, social media promotion and safety equipment management. Regan’s insights are invaluable, and we are very lucky to have someone so caring and well-liked in such an important role.
Lucy returned to Latin as a Junior and has been a huge part of the Varsity program ever since. She is an attacking midfielder with speed, skill and creativity. Coming back from injury is something that Lucy has managed time and again in her field hockey career, and such resilience is testament to her strong character and love for her teammates.
Crawford played field hockey for the Hawks in Middle School, but then turned her focus to lacrosse. Her return to the program this year has been magnificent. Crawford is a natural sportswoman of the highest caliber, and she has made a seamless transition into the Hawks midfield line, making big contributions again and again.
Ellie is a Vice Captain and a superb defender who dominates all those she comes up against. She is also a sharp dresser and a fast thinker. Ellie is a central figure whose influence on the team extends beyond the playing field. Her presence is essential to our team chemistry and to our success. It’s hard to believe that Ellie only joined this roster as a junior and that this year is already her last as a Hawk.
TEAM MANAGER, REGAN FRAIL CRAWFORD FISHER LUCY CRUTCHFIELD ELLIE CHAI – VICE CAPTAINVARSITY FIELD HOCKEY
The Hawks Varsity Field Hockey team enjoyed a great season, and although a state semifinal overtime defeat is always heartbreaking, the girls can hold their heads high for everything they achieved together. Highlights include supporting and coaching the middle school teams, regular season wins over Covenant Day and both Cary schools, home and away conference victories against Country Day, beating Charlotte Catholic, and pushing North Carolina’s top-seeded Myers Park into OT early in the season - then going to the wire against them again later in the season. The team focused on being Active, Brave and Confident - ABC - something that helped them start games aggressively, work hard off-ball for each other, and have the belief and support to know they can take risks shooting and eliminating. Our captains and seniors led the team with unity, and as sad as we are to see the conclusion of their hockey careers, we are proud and so excited to see what comes next for all of them.
JUNIOR VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY
Fall 2022 saw another strong JV Field Hockey team work hard in practice and dominate their competition. Game highlights of the season included a thrilling 1-1 tie against Myers Park HS in which the Hawks were tied 0-0 at the half, got scored on in the third quarter, and then managed a tying goal in the last 90 seconds of regulation. Paige Fletcher scored the game winner! A second highlight was a 1-0 win over Country Day off a corner play with no time left on the clock in the fourth quarter. Charlotte Tune scored the game winner! Throughout the season the team worked to support each other as players and as people, utilizing the double shoulder squeeze that has become the physical representation of our team motto: “I’ve got your back and I know you’ve got mine.” The mutual support provided to and by each and every player on the team helped produce stalwart defense and a potent offense; the Hawks outscored their opponents 83-8 en route to a 14-1-1 regular season record, a 4-0 Queens play day record in August, and a 4-1 Julie Firr Memorial Tournament record to conclude the season, finishing as runner-up to Myers Park in the championship game.
8TH GRADE FIELD HOCKEY
Our 8th grade team had a great season with our only losses coming against one team. As the season progressed, our players came together to play as ONE team. Our skills improved as well as our ability to stay focused on the task at hand. We had a little adversity when we lost our only goalie in the middle of the season, but players stepped up and took turns taking on that role. That adversity helped us towards the end of the season when we were down in the semi-final to Holy Trinity and came back to win the game. We never gave up and earned a spot in the GCMSAA championship against a strong Country Day team that had beaten us badly in the beginning of the season. The Hawks showed just how much they’d improved throughout the season, sending the game into a dramatic 7 on 7 overtime. Unfortunately, the Bucs got the win that day, but our team had so much to be proud of. Our final record was 10-3 and we scored 58 goals. Go Hawks!
7TH GRADE FIELD HOCKEY
Three cheers for an undefeated season! Decisive wins became the calling card for the 2022 7th grade Field Hockey Hawks. There were no ties. Only two goals were surrendered the entire season. They never trailed. This cast of talented athletes worked hard in practice steadily improving their stick skills, stamina and game sense. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next year! Go Hawks!

VARSITY FOOTBALL
The 2022 Varsity Football team played with a lot of passion and grit. The Hawks had signature wins over Christ School and Country Day. Our 11 seniors showed that you don’t have to be the biggest players to compete at the highest level. The Hawks were the 5th seed in the 2022 NCISAA Division I playoffs and hosted the first home playoff game since 2017. Led by team captains Caeden O’Neal, Tyler Hendley, Aaron Logan, and Jacob Snyder, the Hawks surpassed expectations and we are very proud of what they accomplished.
JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL
JV football split the season with four wins and four losses. The Hawks finished the season on a high note with a 28-21 victory away at Providence Day. This young team learned a lot and developed skills that they will continue to build on as some of them move up to varsity next year.
MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL
The Middle School football team finished with a 1-4 record after a big 22-14 win to open the season at Country Day. The team had major contributions from 8th graders Alex Dauska, Owen Bex, Nick Smith, Cooper Holland, Ben Morgan and Zach Krasnigor, both offensively and defensively. Bryce LaPoint and Cole Bradley really stepped up on the offensive and defensive lines as well. Next year’s team will look upon several 7th grade leaders that got a lot of playing experience in 2022, like Trey Paige, Edward Fisher, Baker Humphrey, Kemp Chapman, Peyton Laughton, Holland Loeffler, McNair Beaver and Robert Comly. The 2022 boys’ varsity soccer season was one to be remembered as not only did the Hawks play one of the toughest schedules in the state, they walked away CISAA conference champions at the end of it all. Starting the year with a record of 5-1-1 against some incredible teams, the Hawks quickly found themselves 5-5-1 after a string of close games with heartbreaking finishes. The rest of the season, however, was a testament to the character, determination, and mindset of the team. The Hawks went on to finish the season 6-1, with some incredible road victories at Cannon, Covenant Day & Charlotte Country Day. I am very proud of this team and all that we accomplished together.
JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCER
What a fantastic season we had this year with this group of young men. Going into this season was a challenge having such a young team consisting of 13 freshman, seven sophomores and only two juniors. Learning new formations and systems of plays, the boys worked hard in practice sessions and embraced all the changes. On the field, the boys displayed such a dynamic style of play with lots of creativity and determination, pushing the boys to a great season with only one loss. We are very proud of this team. What a great group of young men and we enjoyed watching them develop both their skill and enthusiasm for the game.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER
The 2022 Middle School boys’ soccer season was led by head coach Paul Alt, along with assistant coach Mark Brunton, succeeding several progressive years from head coach Powell Paguibitan. This team continued the technical and tactical improvements from previous seasons, and combined these efforts with player-initiated team goals of resiliency and staying positive. The goals were met many times, as the season was streaked with ebbs and flows. We won the first four games, dropped the next three, and won the last four games, resulting in the #2 spot at the end of regular season. This seeding set a semi-final between Latin and PD on Patten Stadium. PD scored against the run of play halfway through the first half, and Latin continued to bombard the Chargers until the lights came on, but ultimately fell 0-1. The Hawks played their best soccer at the end of the season in front a great Latin crowd. Other highlights included two victories over Country Day, and late winners at Christian and Covenant Day. The team celebrates ten 8th graders and wishes them all the best in Upper School, and we are excited about 15 returning 7th graders for next season! Go Hawks!

Congratulations! Congratulations!
Camille joined the team as a freshman and worked hard behind a talented group of older players. She immediately showed her talent in doubles and by junior year her hard work paid off, going undefeated that year in doubles with a 15-0 record! In last year’s state final, Camille won one of the two singles matches that clinched the title for the Hawks, coming back to win in an exciting 3rd set breaker. Camille also established herself as a leader off the court, excelling as a two-year captain and as a SALT representative for the team. Her dry sense of humor and spirit keeps things fun around her teammates.
Samantha has been a 4-year starter for the Hawks, and will finish her time at Latin with close to 30 singles and 22 doubles wins. Samantha made her mark right away as a freshman by keeping us in the 2019 final, securing our only doubles point and starting our comeback surge with a win in singles. Since then, Samantha has come through with many clutch wins in both singles and doubles that contributed to our 2020 and 2021 State titles. She is a fierce competitor with a quiet determination that has made her a huge asset to our team.
(L-R) Samantha DeWeese, Mayes Fisher, Eleanor Poole, Macy Thigpen, Camille Darwich CAMILLE DARWICH -CAPTAIN SAMANTHA DEWEESEMacy joined the varsity team her freshman year and has steadily improved as a player since then. Macy has worked hard to become more consistent off the ground, using her powerful serve to open up the court for the put-away ball. Macy has also really caught on to the nuances of doubles, dominating at net and pumping up her partner during matches. While consistently facing the challenge of having to compete for playing time with many talented teammates, Macy has handled herself with grace and a team-first attitude, contributing whenever she was in the lineup. Her cheerful and positive attitude also helped keep the team’s mood light during many a stressful situation.
Mayes has been a starter on the tennis team for each of her 4 seasons. Her athleticism, powerful serve and ground strokes will result in her gaining over 30 wins each in singles and doubles by the end of her time on the courts at Latin. She has been an integral part of the team’s three State Championships. A three-sport athlete, Mayes knows how to compete and win, but always does so with a smile and excellent sportsmanship towards her opponents. Her upbeat attitude and personality make her a great teammate and friend to all.
Eleanor joined the tennis team her freshman year, bringing with her a solid baseline game. She worked hard and learned much her first two years behind some very talented and experienced teammates. Eleanor steadily added shots to her arsenal and was always ready to jump into the lineup when needed. She has become one of our most consistent contributors both as a singles player and in a successful doubles partnership with Mayes Fisher. Also, a three-sport athlete, Eleanor competes hard and is determined to walk off the court with a win. She has also been an encouraging and supportive cocaptain this year as a senior.
MAYES FISHER ELEANOR POOLE-CAPTAIN MACY THIGPENThe success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should raise each other up. Make sure you’re very courageous: be strong, be extremely kind, and above all be humble.

After a challenging start, this year’s Varsity Girls’ Tennis team really pulled together and hit their stride mid-season, when the singles lineup solidified, and doubles partnerships started to gel. Heading into the NCISAA playoffs, we knew we were better than our 6th seed indicated, but needed to go on the road to prove it. After a home win over Rabun Gap, the Hawks traveled to Raleigh and played their best tennis against third-seeded Saint Mary’s School, and second-seeded Durham Academy, to earn a fourth consecutive spot in the finals. The championship match was against #1 seed Charlotte Country Day and was hosted at UNC Charlotte’s Halton-Wagner Tennis Center. The Hawks fought hard but trailed 2-1 going into singles, and could not make up enough ground to get the four wins needed to claim the state title. Calvin Davis, the Bucs’ head coach, said that Latin pushed them the hardest this season. It was a fantastic match all around, with everyone giving it their all. We would like to recognize the contributions of our five seniors: Mayes Fisher, Eleanor Poole, Samantha DeWeese, Camille Darwich, and Macy Thigpen. Since starting in our program in seventh grade, this group has been a huge part of a string of Latin tennis victories from 2017-2022 that includes two middle school conference championships, three consecutive NCISAA state championships, and this year’s runner-up prize. They will be missed!
JUNIOR VARSITY TENNIS
The 2022 Latin JV tennis season was a renewal year. With only four returning players, this year’s squad had much to learn. The season began with seven straight losses, yet their enthusiasm for tennis never waned. This was in large part due to the leadership of the team’s three juniors Neesa Phadke, Ansley Hoffman and Katherine Dubose, and sophomore Molly Schnyder (we shall not forget “Molly Time”). Their positive attitudes and inclusiveness buoyed the team through some difficult competitions and the team finished by winning five of the last six matches.
This winning streak was the result of significant improvement in the players. Katherine Dubose, Molly Schnyder, Ananya Banerjee, Angelina Yang, Jackie Rao and Jolin Cheng all made notable strides in their tennis development. Evy Linker and Divija Rao’s efforts and determination led to remarkable improvement in their tennis skills. Hannah Blackhall and Zoe Panzo played inspired doubles throughout the season while both won singles matches in the final tie. One of the intrinsic values of JV tennis is to foster skill development, and this year was a successful step in adding to the foundation of Latin’s strong girls’ tennis program.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS
Our team had an amazing season this fall! The players’ hard work resulted in a regular season record of 9-1 and in the postseason we made it to the championship match. All eleven players contributed to our success throughout the season. Establishing the foundation of our team’s culture was the main priority accomplished this season. Being mindful of our effort and attitude on and off the court was central to this culture. At the end of each practice and match we dedicated time to spotlight one another for specific examples of maximum effort and maintaining a positive attitude. Every player did a great job of creating an accepting and supportive environment which allowed for our team to grow very close. At times celebrating teammates’ accomplishments and also comforting teammates after defeats. Our team is excited for the opportunities that next season will bring!
VOLLEYBALL SENIOR Congratulations!
Lilly Clark is a three-year varsity player who was selected as a captain by her teammates. She has established herself as a dominating presence at the net defensively and offensively. Lilly has led the team in blocks for the last two seasons and this year she has also led the team offensively with an incredible .341 hitting percentage. Lilly is known for her steady consistency at the net and fun spirit with her teammates. She is one of those players that will always have a smile on her face and is loved by everyone. Some of her favorite memories throughout her volleyball career at Latin have been laughing with her teammates and always dancing to Cotton Eye Joe during practices. Lilly’s advice for future players is to always have fun and be competitive.

The Varsity Volleyball team finished their season with an 11-15 record improving incredibly from last season. This team was very young with only one senior and competed throughout every single match. Our senior, Lilly Clark, led the team in blocks with a total of 37 and a hitting percentage of .285. The team was also led by junior Ashley Malone, who was recognized as an All-State and All-Conference 1st Team player leading the way on offense with 341 kills, averaging 4.1 kills/set. We are very proud of this team for the hard work throughout the entire season with a tough conference schedule and how they always stepped up to the challenge. This season showed us all that Hawks volleyball has a bright future ahead!
JUNIOR VARSITY VOLLEYBALL
Thirteen ninth and tenth grade Hawks made up the JV volleyball team, which was led by second-year coach Lisa Laws and assisted by Marianna Spero. The Hawks celebrated key wins against Providence Day, Carmel Christian, and Charlotte Country Day, while learning from their losses and taking action to correct mistakes. It was a great year for this team, which is full of talent and positivity.
8TH GRADE VOLLEYBALL
The 8th grade girls’ volleyball team finished the season with a great battle in the playoffs and are excited for the future. This team started out with some work to do and minimal experience playing together. They improved so much as a team and in their individual skills, and it was incredible to watch. The support demonstrated by the group, along with the infectious positive support of our manager, Julian, is what really made the season so memorable. It is hard to select one match that stood out for this team because so many matches went to three sets where the team really pushed themselves and gave their best efforts. The theme for this year was “growth”, and not only did their skills improve significantly, but they became a strong unit through their friendship as teammates. As coaches, it was such a joy to watch. Go Hawks!
7TH GRADE VOLLEYBALL
What an amazing season the youngest volleyball Hawks had! This team improved so much and really learned what it means to work together as a team. We battled injuries and learned to play new positions. We truly had each other’s backs and we persevered until the end. Our last game was our most exciting, coming out on top after coming from behind. Our never-give-up attitude helped us grow all season long. Way to go, Hawks!

Crawford credits her dad with first exposing her to lacrosse, since he always had it on the TV. A former college player himself, Mr. Fisher also coached a local youth league, and young Crawford was often brought along to practices. She didn’t pick up her own stick, though, until she played for the Hawks in seventh grade. It turns out, she liked it, and says it’s the fast pace and the combination of skills from other sports that makes it fun to play. Just two years later, Crawford made the varsity team as a freshman and began playing for a club team. Unfortunately, that was the “COVID year,” and our season was canceled before it really started. Crawford made up for lost time the next two seasons, scoring more than 60 goals and winning 50 draw controls. She earned All-Conference and All-State as a sophomore and a junior, and added 2nd Team All-Observer honors last year. More importantly, Crawford exemplifies the “team-first” attitude with her hard work, her consistency, and her willingness to play any role needed. And don’t let her quiet demeanor fool you – she is a fierce competitor who is not afraid to drive to the goal or box-out on a draw.
Crawford visited a lot of schools and realized that she preferred a smaller size but also wanted the opportunity to study abroad. Of course, strong academics and a competitive lacrosse program were factors as well. She found it all in Pennsylvania, where she spent a day with the team and saw how close the players were, and how much they enjoy playing lacrosse together. Next year, she’ll be among them as a Red Devil, learning and competing at Dickinson College.
Congratulations Crawford!
Curiosity drove Bryce to pick up his first lacrosse stick when he was around six years old, and it’s been a part of his life ever since. He particularly enjoys the fast pace and physicality of the sport. From his position as a goalie, Bryce says he feels in control of the flow of the game. He has started in goal for the varsity team since he was a freshman, exhibiting fearlessness and quickness between the pipes, and attaining a 55-percent save rate overall. Bryce brings enthusiasm and emotional energy to the team, even when he was sidelined last year with an injury and spent much of the season helping his teammates develop the skills needed to fill in as goalie. He has a heart for giving back to the sport with a willingness to volunteer at clinics and work as a coach with younger players. Bryce recognized early-on that he wanted to play collegiate lacrosse and he has put in the work necessary to achieve his goal, with a commitment to gaining strength and continually improving his technique.
When the time came to visit colleges, Bryce visited several schools during his junior year, but one stood out. He describes it as dream-like, being surrounded by fountains, modern buildings, and a state-of-the-art stadium that buzzed with energy... an energy that seemed to flow through all of campus. His decision may have been made even easier by a sense of familiarity, since Bryce’s brother, Collin, was already playing lacrosse there. We look forward to having Bryce back in goal fully healthy with the Hawks this year, before he makes the transition to collegiate lacrosse at High Point University.
Congratulations Bryce!
Davis doesn’t remember exactly when he started playing golf – it just seems to have always been part of his life. We can credit his middle school buddies at Carmel Country Club for fostering his love for the sport, though, because he enjoyed hanging out with them so much that he started playing a lot more. In fact, even though golf is more of an individual sport, Davis says the social aspect of the game is the part he loves most, and where he has formed some of his greatest friendships. Davis had his “hello world” moment when he ran away with the individual title at the state championship as a sophomore, shooting a six-under par 66 that included seven birdies on the back nine. His success continued in his junior year, when he finished ranked third in stroke average in the NCISAA. This summer, Davis faced a tough challenge at the North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship. After one round of stroke play qualifying, Davis was the 36th seed. Undeterred – or maybe a little deterred – he went on to win six straight head-to-head matches in bracket play to claim the title and the prestigious Henry Lee Welch trophy. Along with his accomplishments on the golf course, Davis has also excelled on the basketball court. Don’t let the baby face fool you, he is one of the most competitive athletes I’ve coached.
Davis is also a smart young man, and he recognized that finding the right school meant finding the right blend of academics, athletics, and social environment. This particular program made the choice easy for him. Davis said his future teammates were very welcoming, and he knows that while he is having fun with them on the golf course, he will also be getting a very good education. We can’t wait to watch him play just up the road at Davidson College.
