W
ow! It’s already April and the start of a new financial year for the CB Group. The last financial year ending in March 2017 saw the company achieving record output for chicken, pork and eggs. We were also recognized as a Quality Ambassador for Jamaica and received the inaugural National Certification Body of Jamaica (NCBJ) award for quality in agriculture. The list of achievements for the last financial year is indeed long and there is much for us to be proud of. So, in the wake of such achievements, how do we keep our focus on our journey towards being a great company by 2025? The truth is that great companies become great because of their great people. So, to achieve our vision for 2025 we must focus on our people. The safe food campaign taught our people about the benefits of eating safe, but now we must extent this to how to live better. Healthier bodies produce healthier minds. Healthy minds are more creative, more innovative and more productive. Living better means achieving better work-life balance, protecting our environment which impacts our health and working with our contract farmers and other business partners in building sustainable agriculture.
Welcome
By now all in the CB family should have been briefed about the 3-year plan for their department. This step by step plan needs to be monitored regularly to ensure that we remain on course to meet our goals and objectives for the next three years. There will be challenges in meeting these goals and objectives, but the human spirit is indomitable and is equal to any challenge. Ultimately, the alignment of a company’s human resource with the company vision, mission and values is what will help to propel it to greatness. Once the human talent pool is deep, the leadership is strong, the vision, mission and values are clear and there is alignment through training, standard operating procedures, motivation and a culture which manages risk taking, creativity and wellness, then the resulting resonance will lead to greatness. It takes a lot to maintain a viable company let alone to build a successful one. Only a relative handful of companies ever ascend to greatness. Financial capital, a sound business model, a great product or service as a value proposition and building strong brands are amongst indispensable building blocks to building a great company, but the most critical factor is our people. Great companies exist because they have great people and great companies know this. CB people let's live better and teach others to do the same. Dr. Velton Gooden welcome

Pop Ups at CB Group locations Live Better has experienced immense success internally and there's a positive buzz externally. On lookers, customers, friends and foe have commented about the campaign's messaging and overall look and tone. But this is just the start. Internal sensitization continued on March 15th with members of People & Culture and Marketing popping-up at all CBG locations to talk with you face to face and explain what Live Better is all about. With Happy Foods soups being the first product being launched under Live Better, soup sampling was done at all locations. We hope you enjoyed!

at the Races Rain or shine, Front Runner-fed horses prove over and over that they are champions! It may have been a muddy day, but the crowd still turned out to Caymanas on March 18th to watch the races. At the Front Runner-sponsored Thornbird Stakes, She’s A Maneater’ ridden by jockey Omar Walker was victorious and confirmed her status as the top filly within her 3 year old group bracket. In the Front Runner sponsored Prince Consort Stakes, it was also Omar Walker who championed the race with chestnut ‘Fearless Samurai’. Trainer Wayne DaCosta expected nothing less. In true Front Runner fashion, grooms and jockeys received giveaways and prizes!

Nutramix Farmers Workshops On a mission to educate Jamaican farmers about best practices, the-BIG-feed experts continued their journey across and around the island. Last month, they headed to Montego Bay, Bog Walk, Pay Pen, Westmoreland and Port Antonio. Farmers and potential farmers turned out in the numbers to learn and have their queries addressed by our professionals. Kudos to the Nutramix team for initiating the workshops and venturing into communities to reach Jamaican farmers face-to-face. The workshops are interactive, enlightening and enjoyable. around the brand in 30 days — nutramix

Creating Bonds
in Our Communities
JA BizTown’s CB Tuckshop JA BizTown was a success in February. Unlike in any other town, in this one, children are their own bosses. They manage companies, invest in businesses, pay bills, vote in elections and conduct financial transaction. The children work in their very own CB Tuckshop. Here are some of their experiences.
Sasheka Bethune Chief Financial Officer “I attend Unity Primary School JA Biztown is really exciting. I had a lot of fun. I worked as the CFO in the CB Tuckshop. It was really amazing. I wrote up cheques for my employees and I earned a lot of money. It was so interesting and I also learnt things like how to write cheques and how to put my money in a chequing account. Looking back at my experience, when I grow up, I want to become a CFO.”
Shanice Ramsay Sales Associate “I attend Kellits Primary School. My day at JZ BizTown was very educational. We got a change to server all the other students and adults. My position allowed me to serve meals and collect money. I enjoyed working there. It was fun and I learnt a lot.”

CBG’s first Farmer’s Expo a success
As the Group has grown immensely over the years, we decided to reach out to fellow Jamaicans to grow with us. Our success would not be possible without our contract farmers. So, we held our very first Farmer’s Expo on February 28th at the Pegasus Hotel where we had over 500 attendees. We had 21 exhibitors including Jamaica Agricultural Society and Development Bank of Jamaica who all joined us to educate attendees about their services and how to get started as a contract farmer. Presentations were given by some of our very own CBG fam on a number of topics such as the benefits of contract growing, the negative effects of food imports on our economy, and farming conditions for various livestock. Thank you to those who helped to make the Expo a success and to those who showed their support.

recipe corner — tuscan roast pork belly
Directions: 1. Score the pork skin and fat in a criss-cross pattern, without cutting into the meat. Place pork on a rack in the sink and pour over a kettle of boiling water (this will result in crisp crackling). Dry well. Crush rosemary, fennel, zest and garlic in a mortar and pestle to a coarse paste. Stir in oil then rub paste into pork skin. Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least 4 hours or overnight. 2. Preheat oven to 220°C. Place pork in a roasting pan and pour over wine. Rub 2 tablespoons sea salt into skin, then roast for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 160°C and return to oven for 1 hour. Scatter onions in pan and roast for a further 1 hour until skin is crisp and juices run clear. 3. Remove onion and pork from pan and cover loosely with foil. Rest for 15 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, discard all but 2 tablespoons fat from pan, retaining any juices. Place pan over medium heat and stir in flour. Cook for 1 minute, then whisk in stock and Marsala until smooth. Strain. Keep warm. 5. Thickly slice pork and serve with the green beans, lemon and gravy.
Also known as Bright Monday, Renewal Monday, Wet Monday, and Dyngus Day April 17, 2017 Around the world: Easter is depicted by the Easter Bunny. But why a rabbit? The Easter Bunny (aka Easter Rabbit or Easter Hare) is a folkloric figure depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the “Easter Hare” originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behaviour at the start of the season of Eastertide.
Traditions Guyana: People fly kites, which are made on Holy Saturday. Poland: It is known as Dyngus or Splash Monday, where children often play water games. Italy: Easter Monday is celebrated as Pasquetta where people have picnics in the countryside.
Easter Monday around the world
United Kingdom: It is a bank holiday and in Leicestershire, England, the people of Hallaton hold a bottle-kicking match and Hare Pie Scramble. United States: Though not largely observed in the United States, there’s the Egg Roll tradition, traced as far back as 1878, which occurs at the White House. Buffalo, New York: Holds the world’s largest organized Dyngus Day celebration. Germany: People go out into the fields early in the morning and hold Easter egg races. Australia: Holds the Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival which is a 2 day horse-racing meeting. There are carnival rides and picnics and families camp for the whole weekend near the race track. Egypt: It’s called Coptic Monday and Egyptians celebrate the ancient festival of Sham El Nessim “smelling of the breeze” dated back to about 2700 BC. Traditional activities include painting eggs and eating feseekh (fermented mullet).
