e m o c wel Welcome to the July edition of ChatBout! June 1, 2018 marked the start of the dreaded annual hurricane season. Forecasters predict a 35 percent chance of an above-normal season, a 40 percent chance of a near-normal season, and a 25 percent chance of a below-normal season for the upcoming hurricane season, which extends from June 1 to November 30.
The US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasters predict a 70-percent likelihood of 10 to 16 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). An average hurricane season produces 12 named storms, of which 6 become hurricanes, including 3 major hurricanes. So, CB Group be prepared let’s not be caught off guard. Each year, since 2011, the CB Group has been participating in the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) National Quality Awards (NQA) program. Last time out we won the inaugural National Quality Award in Agriculture (CB Egg Farm Limited) and Caribbean Hatchery Limited was named a Quality Ambassador. In keeping with our tradition of participation in the NQA program, for 2018 the CB Group has entered Newport Mills Limited, Caribbean Hatchery Limited and Imagination Farms - Poultry in the appropriate categories for consideration for a national quality award. The winners will be announced at a glitzy banquet in October 2018. Please join me in wishing our CB Group entrants for 2018 all the best. July 1, 2018 marks ten years since my return to the CB Group. It has truly been an honour working with the CB Group family and as I watch the Group transitioning from good to great, I want to use this opportunity to thank the directors, executives, managers and the people of the CB Group for the privilege to be a part of such a fantastic team effort. Finally, July offers many opportunities for us to continue to build with the CB Group team. Domino Double Six competition has started at Newport Mills, our 13th year of PAN is underway and I’m sure you would have seen the many summer interns getting a taste of the CB experience at our locations. Let’s make sure we participate in these and other activities and events as we work hard to make CB the great company it is destined to be. Walk good and I hope your FIFA world Cup team wins this year.

Women In Agriculture visit the Farm in Little Orchard
Women In Agriculture
On June 10th, a cool Sunday afternoon, the Nutramix and Gleaner team journeyed to the fertile lands of Linstead to visit the Farm in Little Orchard. Owner of this award-winning farm, Jade Lee, along with her family and playing puppy Khloe warmly welcomed the team. Hand in hand, through the field of cultivated callaloo, breadfruit, moringa, and orchard apples, our girls were inspired by our Women in Agriculture who were teaching the younger generation of the importance of agriculture. Along with other Nutramix 2018 calendar featured women, Jade Lee gave the team a tour of her farm, which included robusta and gros michel bananas and the majesty of Sherwood Forest. After the tour, the team was treated to jerk chicken and pork, with roasted sweet potato, breadfruit and pumpkin from the field of Little Orchard. While the team played friendly games of Domino and Luddy, The Gleaner team invited Jade Lee to share her story as a Women in Agriculture. 5

Nutramix’s Double Six Championship in Full Swing
Brands
Nutramix’s “Double Six” Championship is back in full swing for summer 2018 and this year’s staging promises to be even more exciting than before! Loaded with lots of fun, cool giveaways and great prizes, every stop along the tournament schedule so far has been nothing short of thrilling. This year marks the 3rd annual staging of the farmer domino tournament, and with a few minor tweaks to the overall format, we’ve opted to make 11 stops as opposed to 8, while venturing deeper into the communities and getting even closer to the people. Things kicked off in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth on June 16, and the final stop will be in Croft’s Hill, Clarendon on September 8. 6

The National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB) is back on board as official judges, while MC Duffy and DJ Kevin keep us entertained with laughter and music throughout the proceedings at each stop! Check last issue’s back cover for full schedule, or follow @farmnutramix on social media to see where’s next.

W hite A Force to Reckon With White Hall is home to five chicken houses, four (4) 16,000sqft and one (1) 20,000sqft, which holds 105,000 birds per turn. Known for its history in the poultry industry, it is the one of the first farms in Jamaica where tunnel ventilation was started way back in 1988. Today the farm still stands tall and is producing the better tasting chicken year after year. The day to day operations see the workers tending to their birds as most of them call the chicken. “Likkle but Tallawah” defines this small but effective Production Team, as there is no task too minor or obstacle too challenging for them. This dynamic trio is always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, getting the job done through their sheer determination and passion for excellence. Even while on their day off they will call to check in and express their willingness to offer additional support if needed. With a team of this calibre there is no slowing down the momentum and growth for the CB Group.

Copperwood Farms Encourages Councellor Visits for Mental Health
Many non-communicable diseases can be related to stress. Stress seems to worsen or increase the likelihood of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and asthma. It is with these facts that the Management of Copperwood Farms Ltd. collaborated with the Lucea Seventh Day Adventist Church. The partnership entails a barter wherein Copperwood donates protein to their street feeding program and in return a counsellor visits the plant for a monthly sit down with workers. The Copperwood workers are elated about the initiative and have expressed the benefits from the program. 10

“The type of work we do, like for me working on the band saw... it’s risky, can’t have nothing pan you head, you have to stay focused and problems from outside can throw you off, so mi glad mi have an avenue to talk mi mind.” - Leroy Moseley, Saw Operator for the Tray Chop Team
Testimonials from those who have been counselled and their respective supervisors admit that it has proven to be beneficial as the workers have become more productive.

It has been 5 years since its inception and the selection process is very simple. A person can opt to speak with the counsellor or they are selected by Team Leads, Supervisors or Managers. This information is fed to our Production Supervisor/ Program Coordinator, Kaydia Rowe, who organizes the schedule.
“We have a good rapport with our workers and we know when they have significant issues especially deaths, they would often shy away because counselling is stigmatized as a person being weak. Once they get over that hurdle however, they report how successful the chats have been.” -Kaydia Rowe.
There is no health without mental health and each plant needs healthy workers to be productive and efficient.
“At times you have things wha you ah stress bout, you jus want somebody fi talk to, you don’t get to do your best job possible because you have to re-do your work and that waste time. When you come to work stressed you jus miserable and it affects your team members too.” Jermaine Moseley Fresh Packaging Team

Great things are happening at CB Freetown! The most noteworthy happening has to be our loading of the second export container to Cayman. We are very excited to be a part of this historic accomplishment for our company and we are looking forward to more doors being opened in the export market. The sky’s the limit as we LEAP forward together.
Secondly, our SGS External Audit 2018 which took place on July 4 saw us being “CAR FREE” and we are extremely excited and proud about that. As the saying goes, “Team work makes the dream work”! We have to say that team work was what truly allowed for our accomplishment as Team Freetown worked assiduously in preparing for this audit. 12
Thirdly, we are very proud of our six-a-side football team, “Freetown United”, who have reached the semifinals of the CB Champions League football competition. We are now awaiting a date for this match to be played. GO CB FREETOWN!

What Makes it 360°? In Math, a circle is made up of 360 degrees. So 360 degree feedback is the process of getting information about your performance from persons you work with that surround you like a circle:
Leader
Self Peer
Peer
Direct Reports
Performance appraisals are so last year! (Or maybe the year before that…) The CB Group is ready to step up its game by introducing a new way of performance management: During LEAP we announced our commitment to strengthen our communication, and open more doors for honest feedback. First was PDPs (Personal Development Plans) and now we’re going to try something new.
So How Will It Work? 1. BambooHR will have the surveys assigned to you 2. You’ll be asked to give feedback on a. Your Self b. Your Direct Supervisor or Manager c. Your Direct Reports d. Your Peer (someone you work with in your department or otherwise) 3. Feedback given about you by those same groups can be viewed. Feedback to your Manager and Peers will be anonymous (they won’t see your name) 4. After getting all information, teams can talk through what was positive and what needs improvement. Why 360° Anyway? Switching to a 360 degree approach of performance management, instead of reviews from only one source, has several advantages: 1. Increases Self-Awareness Self-awareness means understanding your personality, including your strengths, weaknesses, motivations, thoughts, and emotions.
2. Measures HOW things get done as opposed to just WHAT gets done You may not meet your targets because you’re helping others meet theirs. Or you may meet all your targets and at the same time not get along with your team. How things get done is just as important as what gets done.
3. Encourages Personal Development Honest and reliable feedback is necessary to test how others see you, recognize previously overlooked strengths, and expose your own blind-spots.
360 degree feedback is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal to improve relationships, increase accountability, and provide clarity on how to improve performance. So…yuh ready??? Performance 360 hits your desks in July 2018. 17

Holland is a global powerhouse in agriculture and technology where agriculture is a first choice career option with a dedication to technology, innovation, smart use of land, green growing and sustainability – all of which our Group is trying to also accomplish. Included on the trip, organized by Nutramix’s own Hans Muller along with NPM’s Dutch supplier NuScience, were visits to several farms, plants and organizations to see how things are done by the pros there from an operations, production, culture and all round packaging and distribution point of view. Included were broiler and dairy farms, onion, mushroom and sweet pepper farms. Farmers there, who often held a Master’s Degree, gave personal tours and exposed the CB team to incredibly advanced technologies, systems and automated processes. It’s safe to say that CB Group has its foot in the right direction. To learn more about VIV Europe, visit www.viveurope.nl. 19

Go Green
with Brian Royes
Over the past few years, the world has been slowly waking up and realizing that we use too much unnecessary plastic in our every day lives. This is why for the month of July, over 150 countries and over 2 million people have joined together to dedicate this month as Plastic Free July. This global movement calls on everyone who wants to see a cleaner environment to avoid as many single use plastic products as possible for the whole month. Do you think you could live even just one month – cooking, cleaning, storing things, shopping, working – plastic free? The idea is less about trying to get rid of all the garbage we produce, and more about trying to raise awareness of just how hard it is to live without having to use some form of single use plastic. It’s everywhere – food wrappers, plastic bottles, straws, lunch containers, newspaper wrappers, product packaging, scandal bags and more. It’s also about realizing that after we throw away these plastic products after just one use, they stay on the land and in the sea for hundreds of years, killing animals, and hurting the environment. 20

Go Green
Maybe you can’t cut out ALL plastics, but why not try to cut back on one type of plastic for the month, or follow some of these plastic free tips. Or maybe you can keep a personal record of how many times you use plastic bottles, or eat food wrapped in plastic for the month. And it doesn’t have to stop at the month of July! Why not adopt these tips into our everyday lives all the time? The thing is as you start to live better, others will take notice too – and that’s how we build the movement we need to reduce the damage being done to our earth. Think you’re up for the challenge?
