e m o c wel to a September to remember Chat Bout!

On September 12th, I celebrated the 30th anniversary of my association with this great company. I am sure many of you remember the day, 30 years ago, as if it was yesterday. Not because it was the day I joined the company (the first time around), but because on September 12, 1988 Hurricane Gilbert hit the island; and who could forget Wild Gilbert? I remember venturing out with Mr Karl Hendrickson during the eye of the storm. Trees and powerlines were down, debris were scattered all over the place and people were huddled under sheds in Half-Way-Tree. The level of destruction was simply unbelievable.

It took some time, but the CB Group rebounded from Hurricane Gilbert. We made significant progress over the years gradually moving from processing 10,000 birds per day to 70,000 (big up to d Arnold Road crew) and from being the “other chicken company to the company of choice. We are involved in pork, eggs, beef, crops and so much more. We have two hatcheries and the most modern feed mill in the Caribbean, which recently achieved a record 2 million safe tons. Congrats to the management and staff of Newport Mills. We have come a far way and I am very excited about the future. Our major project is moving steadily along. By the time this issue of Chat Bout is published we will have signed the necessary contracts, secured most equipment, put in road infrastructure and awaiting final approval to start construction. It just goes to show that not all storms, no matter how severe, disrupt our lives permanently; sometimes they actually clear our paths for a brighter future. God bless! 1

returns to Portland with Regional 1

It was sunshine and clear skies in Portland on Saturday August 25th as PAN men and women from the parishes of St Thomas, Kingston & St Andrew, St Catherine, St Ann, St Mary, Portland and Trelawny, all decked out in their CB Chicken and National wear, fired up their pans and got to jerking. Folly Oval was the home of last year’s Regional 2 for the 2nd staging of #PAN2017. This year, emcee Dufton “Duffy” Sheperd got the show started, with sponsor trivia segments, games, giveaways and lots of vibes. This year PAN welcomed a new deejay to its lineup, Portland’s very own, “DJ Bigga 5”, to lead the music. In this year’s street PAN dancehall theme, Copperwood Pork changed up its vibe with 3 ‘PAN men’ cooking up jerk pork with festival, BBQ fusion pork with roast yam and curry pork with roti. Happy Foods soups were as always welcomed by patrons, while sponsors like National, Walkerswood, Red Stripe, Nupak and Miracle all had their own giveaways and entertainment. Before sundown, King of the Dancehall “Beenie Man” opened the show, much to the surprise and delight of the growing audience. Platinum Sponsor National had 2

In the peak of the summer heat, Nutramix and the Drink Real Milk (DRM) campaign took to the showground of Denbigh for a 3-day agricultural experience on August 4th - 6th in the warm parish of Clarendon. Continuing their efforts to encourage Jamaicans to “Grow what we eat; eat what we grow’’, the 66th staging of the Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show hosted over 100 booths, all in support of this national initiative.

As patrons explored the showground with an eagerness to learn, the DRM booth, which showcased 8 artificial insemination (AI) calves quickly became the talk of the town. The newly constructed cow pen provided technical information on AI for dairy cows, along with pasture management from DRM partner Newport Fersan. The Nutramix booth had its familiar buzz as patrons gathered for daily demonstrations from our vets, and technical support from our livestock experts. In the Youth in Agriculture village, the DRM booth was the centre of excitement as kids and adults too engaged in the team dance off rounds the team in dance off rounds and milk drinking contents to receive their prizes. In his new role as Farm Manager, ChatBout had a oneon-one exclusive with Wilfred Lopez (aka Lopez) in this special get to know you feature.

CB: What other locations have you worked at and what was your role there? WL: Around 1989 my journey began with CB where I started out on a leased farm as a House Attendant and promoted to the role of Farm Assistant Supervisor then to Farm Supervisor. The next move was to the Field Office where I was promoted off the farm in a field assistant role as a Live Haulage Supervisor, where I assisted the team in live haulage and technical service operations and then further promoted to Technical Field Officer. The journey continued where another opportunity was opened for me in the role of Live Production-Supervisor at the Hill Run location, to oversee the first solid wall chicken houses constructed in the Caribbean to revolutionize the chicken industry. That now leads me to my current role where I was promoted from Hill Run to Egg Farm as Farm Manager.

Sit and Chat with Wilfred Lopez

CB: What do you think you’ll enjoy the most about working at the Egg Farm? WL: Bringing versatility to the job in solving issues, interacting with the team and hearing their views, and bringing a new synergy to the team CB: What are the values that drive you? WL: Determination, focus, efficiency, commitment, passion CB: How would your family and friends describe you? WL: Mr. Reliable; Workaholic; A force to be reckoned with; Committed; Caring; Dependable 10

CB eZine

loc a tio n s

CB: What do you enjoy doing outside of work? WL: Fishing and spending vacation time with the family CB: Tell us three things about yourself that you’d love for your new team to know. WL: I’m very caring and hardworking and I mean them well; Rewards are given in alignment with commitment; I would love to have the number one team, as there is no ‘I’ in team, as team work makes the dream work. The beauty about working with CB is that with every position that I was assigned, training was provided from both local and overseas entities. What I most appreciate about the Company, is that they give you the necessary tools to succeed in your role and execute your function with excellence, in addition to support from managers which brings me great joy as no man is an island. 11

Happy Retirement Ms. Pat Ms. Pat, Dimples, Auntie, Mama… the many names you’re affectionately called. The void you are leaving here can never be filled. You will always have a space in our hearts. Who else will teach us just how many dishes curry can be added to? From cabbage to meatballs! Who will carry the thermos of porridge for breakfast or bowl of soup for lunch? Who else will keep our office organized, ensuring to remind everyone of tasks they have to complete, and check if any help is needed? We will always admire how you were never late, and actually always the first to arrive even at 4:30am on Tuesday lab mornings. Your infinite knowledge of almost everything, whether it be medical advice, directions, latest news, politics or celebrity gossip, is missed and have us feeling as if we are “living under a rock”. You have imparted so much wisdom. You were always helpful and considerate even when being annoyed. You never failed to have us laughing throughout your 28 years. You have been a confidant for many, whether work related or home. We thank you for providing your listening ear and your advice.

Patricia Smith-Tennyson

Q&A with Ms. Pat Q: When did you join CB Group? A: I came to CB in 1990 as a casual worker. In 1993 I became a contracted worker. Three years later I was promoted to QA attendant under the supervision of Robert Gordon. Q: What is your favourite memory? A: My favourite memory is when the QA department took me to a hotel for a one night stay. It was an awesome experience. Q: What are your final remarks as you leave? A: I am grateful for the love I have received from everyone, especially the QA department. I also want to thank the Hendrickson family for employing me, and I pray God’s blesing on them. I will miss all of you.

You are truly wonderful! Your spirit and energy will always guide us to move forward. Happy Retirement and Love Always, Arnold Road Family 13

An App to help you LIVE BETTER! If you were looking for a mobile app to make you feel better, develop healthy habits and add mindfulness to your life, Fabulous – Motivate Me! could be your app. We’ve tested it for a few days and found it really interesting and worth sharing.

A mindfulness app? With a really nice design, interactive, user friendly look and some really smart features, the Fabulous – Motivate Me! Android only app promises to help us improve our lives from the first day of use. But you know it too well, adding healthy habits to our routines was never easy and many have failed trying to solve this need. This app’s bet is on putting a virtual coach, whose actions are backed by science, in our pocket (well, Android phone, more precisely), a coach guiding and motivating us every step of the way. Of course, these are big promises that most apps make and very few actually manage to really make us, the users, actually stick to them. It’s a tough world and our minds seem to be stubborn indeed. The app guides you through different journeys to adapt rituals easier: • Staying on the Road: To focus and Concentrate more

Gives us reminders, guides and motivates us to reach our established goals: Having tips and explaining what we should do next is one of the strong points of this cool mobile app. All the messages and coaching guidance we get, they tell us, are research-based and focus on helping us get from one step to another to get those healthy habits stuck in our daily lives. Conclusion, only time (and results) will tell: After having it for a few days we can say that it’s a really brilliant mobile app. The app’s graphics is also amazing. All in all, it’s a really useful, fun and smart mobile app. ENJOY!

• An Unexpected Journey: To feel more energised • A Fabulous Night: To sleep better • Celebrating Healthy Eating: To lose weight and eat healthier A lot of different habit recommendations that are really useful from the first interaction: From writing your To Do List to Drink Water to Meditate and Call Your Parents, everything is in the Habits list and it’s really rare that we need to add our personal habits because almost everything is in a list already. But we can still add some more if you we feel like it. 14

Hurricane Season - Safety Tips for Home Owners 1. Check the roof of your house, hurricane shutters, hooks and latches thoroughly and repair where necessary. 2. Make sure that galvanized sheeting on the roof of your house is properly fastened. 3. Keep in stock extra plastic bags and sheets of plastic. Plastic is essential to prevent important documents, paintings, equipment and furniture from getting wet. 4. Keep handy a supply of lumbar, plywood, timber, etc. for battening down purposes. 5. Trim trees that touch power lines or hang over the house and other buildings. 6. Make sure that emergency cooking facilities such as coal stoves are in good working condition as these may be necessary. 7. Make sure you have a supply of kerosene and coal. Keep coal dry by wrapping in a plastic bag or other waterproof material. 8. Latch down securely all small buildings in the yard such as outdoor kitchens, pit latrines, tool sheds, barns, etc. 9. Store extra food, especially things that can be eaten without cooking or which need very little preparation. Electricity may be off during a hurricane, leaving you without refrigeration. 10. Place emergency food supply in a waterproof container and store in a closed box, cupboard or trunk. 11. Make sure you have emergency equipment in your home. These include waterboots, raincoats, flashlights, batteries, portable radio, kerosene lamps and matches. 12. Have simple first-aid equipment such as iodine, bandages, eye lotion, etc. at home. 13. Know how to find the nearest shelter. The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) or your Parish Disaster Committee (PDC) can give you the location of the shelter nearest you. 14. Plan the safest possible route to the nearest safe shelter if you must leave.

Managers Receive Communication Training Training is the name of the game at CBG. We have been ramping up our training to target key groups and skills, including but not limited to our Leadership Team. For two days on July 19 – 20, our Managers were given an intense crash course on communication and performance management. With the new performance 360 tool on the horizon, we saw it fitting to practice communication using the 360 method as a guide. Francis and Dale Wade from Francis W Consulting gave an interactive presentation on personality types, 360 moments, and the importance of being aware of verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. Mangers were allowed to role play scripted scenarios, and gain better insight as to how they receive and deliver feedback. Remember, 70% of training is forgotten after 24 hours if not reinforced! Let’s support our leadership team as they practice what they’ve learned. 18

Recycling Challenge As of September, the Recycling Revolution at CB has begun!

How you can help:

We have officially joined forces with Wisynco Eco by entering their corporate recycling challenge, on a mission to recycle 300,000 plastic bottles by the end of November, under the theme:

Bring your empty plastic bottles from home and place in designated CB Recycling bins. Tell your friends, tell your family, and spread the word – every bottle counts!

“Recycling Plastic Feels Fantastic!” Several Companies across Jamaica, including the Observer, Stewarts Automotive Group, Digicel, Jamaica Football Federation, and 100 Hope Road, will be competing to see who can bring in the most plastic bottles, and CB is in a position to take home the gold! Plastic bottles litter our streets, our beaches, and pollute the air with cancer causing chemicals when burned in our landfills. They take up to 500 years to break down and kill countless animals in the process. As a country, we need to do better. As a company, we have decided to Live Better.

We will also be inviting the wider communities we have relationships with to drop off their plastic bottles at a designated point at Arnold Road. No plastic bottle left behind! The company that recycles the most plastics wins $200,000 to be donated to an eco-initiative at a charity of choice. Join the Movement. Live Better. Beat Plastic Pollution. NB: Only the following plastics can be recycled in Jamaica:
