e m o c wel We’ve come a long way, Baby.

Barrington, Yellowman, Alton and Leroy on JBC. Radigan mash up Barry G. The national anthem opens and closes the day. Getting to work takes 15 minutes in “heavy traffic”. Or get stuck behind a BOJ bus. A Bedford truck with white and yellow crates turns onto Arnold road, feathers in its wake. Red Stripe is raffling Lada’s, and everyone loves Merlene. We have three power-outages this week. But there is water! The hatchery produces almost 70 thousand chicks this week. Toothpaste married Mackrel. Snow cones for 50 cents, a beer for J$2.00 The bridge over Rio Minho collapses and kills people and chickens. Whitehall farms is the biggest poultry farm in Jamaica, by far! An Air Jamaica plane was seized in Miami and fined, and Eastern is on strike. Jamaica receives 1 million tourists, McCallum won again. Four feed trucks are loaded today with 600 paper bags each. Busy day! The Pantomime plays in the Ward. Eddie cancels daylight savings time. Fax machines are the newest thing, and you need an ICAS code to make calls. The bulk truck breaks down at Coopers Hill, and the ice machine breaks down at Arnold Road. Were those the “good old days”? Yes, for some of us. Who could have guessed what we are, and what we do today? Who dares to dream what the future will bring, for CB and Jamaica? The Nest with all its promises, the developments happening in our country? Dreaming is not going to do it, people. Get involved. Seize the day but create your future. Today will be the “good old days” for a lot of you. Just wait. 1

A scrumptious serving of culinary delights greeted patrons at last Saturday’s staging of PAN 2018 Regional 2 at Independence Park, Black River. The smell of succulent CB Chicken laid out on the various grills operated by the 31 PAN competitors, greeted patrons. Patrons queued in long lines to get their fill. This Regional saw over 8500 patrons, with many families bringing out chairs and blankets, relaxing in the breezy, sunny afternoon. Of course, children enojyed the popular Serge Monster Milk Kiddies Village. Emcees Dufton “Duffy” Shepard and Khadine “Miss Kitty” led the agenda and the on-stage activities. The entertainment package kicked off with Rondell Positive, followed by Tee-Hay and Shane-O, and to end the night was Wayne Marshall whose current hit “Glory to God” had the crowd chanting for more. Congratulations to Parish Winners. The first-place winner from each parish won $40,000 cash, while the second-place winner walked away with $20,000 cash. We urge you to bring the family and friends to enjoy the Final, taking place on October 28 at the National Stadium in Kingston. 2

4th Staging of Jamaica Food and Drink Festival Launches Sponsors, chef partners and media gathered at the UTECH School of Hospitality & Tourism Management to welcome the 4th staging of JFDF on Thursday September 27th. With the Festival continuing its broader mission to reposition Kingston as a destination city through gastronomy, this year proceeds from the Festival will contribute to the completion of the Hotel Facility’s recently constructed lecture theatre and test kitchen in an effort to improve the training facilities, and prepare young talent for the food and beverage industry. So then it was only suited that the launch symbolized this new partnership with UTECH. Festival Manager Alicia Bogues took stage to unveil this year’s offerings before welcoming platinum sponsors to the stage. Professor Paul Golding, Dean of College of the Business & Management, UTECH took stage, followed by His Excellency Delroy Williams, Mayor of Kingston and then The Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, who too shared her remarks. Then there was of course, the food! Sneak tastes by sponsor chefs excited tastes buds and got the crowd anticipating the 7 event extravaganza. This year, in addition to Meet Street & The Market held on Ocean Blvd, Downtown, ‘Crisp’ too joined the Downtown movement in the Festival’s efforts to help revitalize destination Kingston. Another new element this year was the announcement to tackle plastic pollution and in ‘goinggreen’, a new partner suppling biodegradable materials throughout the series of events. Check out the highlights from the launch and stay tuned for the event coverage. 6

What’s Happening at The Pork Store 67 Slipe Road in Cross Roads, is where you will find the ‘baby’ of the Group. It’s called the baby of the Group based on its staff compliment of four. But don’t be fooled by the number, it’s quality over quantity! The Store opened its doors to customers in March 2013, and over these few years it has become synonymous with Superior Customer Service and Quality Products among customers and visitors alike. 8

Each week members of the department are given a theme to find the most suitable song for that theme. A panel of 3 judges is selected from our very qualified colleagues here at GO. Once all the entries have been played by DJ CP. The judges select the winning track. As the songs are played there is lots of laughter and excitement as we get to visit some interesting musical choices. This week's theme was Best Comeback Song (think Tiger Woods playing a song for those who thought he would never win another tournament). This week's winner was Marlon Graham aka Candy Man with Bob Marley's - Bad Card (dem ago tiyad fi si mi face).

Good Work Habits That Really Matter Habits are habits for a reason. Habits feel good. Habits feel right. Even if you can see the logic for a different set of behaviours that will have better results, it is very hard to break one habit and create a new one. Research shows that it takes several weeks of consistent practice of a new set of behaviors to form a new habit. It takes even longer for a new habit to become entrenched. Here are 8 “good” wok habits we recommend focusing on: 1. Wellness: Maintaining a healthy body, mind, and spirit/mood. 2. Self-presentation: Controlling one’s grooming, attire, and manners—given the social and cultural situation at hand—so as to make a positive impression on others. 3. Timeliness: Arriving early, staying late, and taking short breaks. Meeting or beating schedules and deadlines. 4. Productivity: Working at a fast pace without significant interruptions. 5. Organization: Using proven systems for documentation and tracking—note taking, project plans, checklists, and filing. 6. Attention to detail: Following instructions, standard operating procedures, specifications, and staying focused and mindful in performing tasks and responsibilities. 7. Follow-through and consistency: Fulfilling your commitments and finishing what you start. 8. Initiative: Being a self-starter. Taking productive action without explicit direction. Going above and beyond; the extra mile. 15

2018 Leadership Retreat

Over 55 CB Group Managers were present at the 2018 Leadership Retreat held from October 3 – 6, 2018 at the Iberostar Hotel in Montego Bay. The aim of the retreat was to inspire a new way of thinking where the future and growth of CB is concerned in relation to our Landing Zone in 2025. The theme for the retreat, Voyage X, was built on embarking on a 15 month journey which would lead to creating the next 3 year plan (2020-2022). Over the 3 day period the retreat featured dynamic speakers and engaging workshops that encouraged innovation and inspired teamwork. The keynote speaker Technologist & Design Thinker, Tom Wujec, Chief Disruptor at Autodesk the Oscarwinning industry leader in 3D computer animation technology, and one of the world’s largest software companies, taught the team a more insightful way of creating and developing new ideas in line with CB’s goals utilizing interactive activities and colourful presentations to showcase the ideas. Interesting and enlightening conversations were had when our Marijuana Panel spoke openly about the future of the herb in the medical industry. The panel consisted of several influential minds in the industry these being Dr. Henry Lowe, Lincoln Allen, J.P., Douglas K. Gordon, Don Gittens moderated by Coleen Douglas. Other noteworthy speakers were Zachary Harding, Founder & Chairman of Hyperion Equity, LLC who spoke on the topic of “Climate Change in the Caribbean” imparting his wealth of knowledge in this critical area, in addition to Valrie Grant, Founder & Managing Director of GeoTechVision & Executive Chairman of Marlie Technology Park Ltd. who addressed the matter of “Building Smart Communities”. Another significant step towards the future was taken this retreat as our Level Up Team joined the managers for one entire day at the Montego Bay Convention Centre and benefited from learning the new ways to creating ideas. The team was also privileged to hear the announcement of the two new ventures that will be invested in via CB Group’s sister company, Lookahead Ltd. these being: • Benchmark – being spearheaded by Dr. Velton Gooden, Head-Quality,QMS • The Outpost Republic (The OR) – spearheaded by Tanya Buxani, Community Director A few “Stars” that shined during the retreat were rewarded in the end for their extra efforts. 16

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 360 review? In Math, a circle is made up of 360 degrees. So 360 degree feedback is the process of getting information about your performance from persons you work with that surround you like a circle: Why do we need to do the 360 review? During LEAP in 2015 we announced our commitment to strengthen our communication and open the doors for more honest feedback. This method of performance management allows each employee to get and give feedback involving a wide cross section of people in their day to day jobs. The 360 method is great as it: I. Increases self-awareness II. Measures HOW things get done as opposed to just WHAT gets done III. Encourages Personal Development.

Will my manager know what I say about them? The software has been built to do an average report of the comments given upwards (to a supervisor Peer or manager). This means, no names are shown in the results. Only the average response that was selected for each question. The review is anonymous.

Environmental Spotlight By now, many of us know that “Live Better” is more than just a catchy campaign slogan – it’s a way of life. It’s a culture shift that’s changing our thoughts, behaviours and lifestyles – and it’s infectious. But it’s not just about living better for ourselves, it’s also about doing what’s best for our environment and the world we live in. This time we’re shining the spotlight on a few individuals around the group who have caught the Live Better bug, to hear what they have to say about our environment. What is one environmental issue you care about and why? What can we do to help? “I am a nature lover and it breaks me inside when I see a beautiful landscape with trees become destroyed. Apart from that, trees are so important to us humans yet we do not respect their purpose. When you visit the country there’s a drastic difference. Many of us know carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that leads to global warming and trees help to get rid of it from the atmosphere. What we can do as a company is to be more active in the plant a tree campaign. Let’s promote re-planting trees for the sake of the environment and just live better.” Jamardo Davis QA Technician, Newport Mills 20

Why is living better for the environment important to you? “Simple. A better environment equals a better you. If we take care of the earth it will take care of us.” Kerry-Ann Rose Team Leader - Tray Chops, Copperwood

What is one environmental issue you care about and why? What can we do to help? The constant pollution of our water bodies: the ocean, seas and rivers, is a major issue to me. This contamination is slowly damaging our marine life, which will soon in turn majorly affect our lives. We can play our part by properly disposing our garbage, participating in beach cleanups like we did on Labour Day and starting to implement more biodegradable materials instead of plastic.

Reminder:

We still have 2 months to win our corporate recycling challenge to recycle 300,000 plastic bottles, and need your help to create a cleaner environment. Remember to recycle your plastic bottles at CB recycling stations.

Kimberly Brown QA Technician, Arnold Road

Why is recycling important to you? For me and my community, recycling would be good because of all the plastic in the gullies. Because of all the bottles, there is no proper draining, so when we get rain, water is just going to overflow because it can’t flow where it’s supposed to, and you know everybody is going to get flooded out. So I think it’s a good thing that needs to happen in my community.

Quick Fact:

In 2017, over 600 million plastic bottles were dumped in Jamaica. Every bottle you recycle counts!

Caribbean Passion Rum and Brown Sugar Ham

 6 |  20 mins |

120 mins

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

1 Caribbean Passion ham (bone-in picnic, bonein leg or boneless leg)

1. Completely defrost the ham, and preheat oven to 350°F.

1 cup brown sugar

3. Heat ham for 10 minutes per pound.

1 cup dark rum

4. Remove from oven, peel away the skin and carve any excess fat.

2. Wrap the ham in layers of foil and place in a baking dish, half filled with water.

5. Score the meat slightly and diagonally in a diamond pattern to allow the glaze to permeate. For the glaze: 1. Combine the brown sugar and rum and occasionally stir for 10 minutes, allowing the sugar to dissolve and the rum to become darker. 2. Pour rum syrup over the ham, allowing it to seep into the scored cuts. 3. Optional: sprinkle a dusting of brown sugar over the ham. 4. Place the ham back in the oven on broil at 500°F. 5. Continually baste the ham with the drippings until it is golden brown and the glaze becomes thick syrup. 6. Remove the ham from oven, slice and serve. 22
