Welcome to the February edition of ChatBout! By the time you’re reading this welcome message, Benchmark Quality Management Solutions Limited, “Benchmark” for short, would have already been launched at JAMPRO. This amazing company is one of the products of the CB Group’s Golden Circle that says, “In everything that we do we believe in making a difference for Jamaica”. So, what really is Benchmark and what does it do? No doubt, you would be aware of the tremendous success the CB Group has had in certifying all its facilities to ISO 9001, HACCP, GMP and more recently GlobalG.A.P at our Imagination Farms facility. Think too, of the numerous quality awards that CB Group companies have won from the Bureau of Standards Jamaica since 2011. Also, the increase in feed, egg, chicken and other exports. Do you remember the SAFE FOOD marketing campaign? Do you recall the pride that you felt as you passed those numerous red billboards signaling the CB Group leadership in quality and food safety? So, what if there was a way to inspire and facilitate other Jamaican and even Caribbean companies to embrace food safety, quality management and related systems and enable them to attain global competitiveness and word-class certifications? Enter Benchmark QMS Ltd! At Benchmark, we don’t just think bigger, we think differently. Combining demonstrated expertise in food safety, quality management and related systems with cutting-edge technology and an agile business model, Benchmark is charting a course to help companies in agriculture, agro-processing and manufacturing attain word-class standards in their operations and achieve certification. Why not check out our website at www.benchmarkqms.com, follow our Linkedin page or download our benchmarkqms app from the Google app or play store to learn more about us? Benchmark’s ever growing client list at the time writing includes companies in the baking, meat processing, retail and medicinal cannabis processing industries. The Benchmark story has taught us a very valuable lesson – Our current reality will never exceed our level of belief and our actions. We can only be more by 1

believing more and doing more. Janieze Mitchell, Ricardo Palmer and myself from henceforth will be focusing our efforts on living the Benchmark dream. You will see us often, but not in our current CB Group roles. The Benchmark journey is one for which we have been adequately prepared. We are focused, we are strong, we are determined to succeed. We leave behind a well-trained and competent QMS team and our beloved CB Group family. My wish for you, CB Group family for 2019, and beyond is that you continue, in everything that you do, to make a difference for Jamaica and that with every passing year your achievements will move you one step closer to the CB Group you dream of. Walk good.

Shoppers Give Thumbs up for Copperwood’s Smoked Extra Lean Bacon In your January ChatBout you’d have read that Copperwood’s new product was hitting stores… January 25th was the official launch day of Copperwood Pork’s first bacon product - Smoked Extra Lean Bacon - in select KYP stores. Live cooking demos took place across HiLo Barbican, Select Grocers, Progressive Bogue, HiLo Bogue, Progressive Ironshore, Lee’s Red Hills, Lee’s Boulevard, Progressive Ochi and The Pork Store over the launch weekend. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive as persons enjoyed the lean bacon samples handed out by our promo teams. The Applewood flavour was also a hit. The bacon strips were prepared by UTECH culinary students and our promoters led shoppers to where they could find the product in stores. You’ll find the product in either the deep freezer or standing chill fridge. Check out highlights from the launch weekend and tune in to @Copperwoodpork to keep posted. 2

Launching Soon With our customers in mind, we’ve created our marinated line, prep’d.

Because cooking is easier when your pork is Prep’d

As we think of Copperwood’s consumers, we have decided to take the next step by creating a pre-prepared line. At Copperwood Lucea, our team takes the time to season and marinate our cuts using fresh and quality ingredients, so our customers don’t have to. And, in supporting local farmers and businesses, we’ve partnered with Peppatree for 100% authentic Jamaican flavours, made here in Jamaica. Look out for our ROASTS • Made from pork butt (shoulder) • Seasoned with Peppatree in Jamaican flavours 1. All Tings 2. Zesty BBQ To launch, the new line will be available exclusively at select KYP stores at the end of February. Lees Red Hills Road, Lees Boulevard, General Foods Liguanea and John R Wong. Keep tuned in as we extend into more retail stores. 5

One-on-One Longest serving Team Member Donald Whyte Meet Donald Whyte, the longest and oldesr serving member at CB Egg Farms Ltd. and Team Lead for House 5. Donald started working at the location in 1989 under the previous owers and has been tending to chickens and harvesting eggs since then. He became a member of the CB family in 2011 when CB acquired the farm and has enjoyed every moment of his job since. How long have you worked on this farm? 30 years What is the best part about working at the CB Egg Farms Ltd.? Seeing the chickens in the morning and knowing they are happy to see me as well. Tell us one thing about working at the CB Egg Farms Ltd. that the rest of CBG doesn’t know. It’s a naturally cold and rainy location, but the atmosphere is fresh, peaceful and relaxing. Perfect for a picnic on a dry day. Describe what a typical work day for you is like. I get to work at 5:30 a.m. every morning. I open my nest boxes, feed my birds, check for mortalities, check water lines, dig their litter and ensure the mesh is dusted as often as needed. Throughout the day I pre-clean and sort eggs picked up by my other two team members, package these eggs in crates for the processing area and complete my production sheets at the end of the day. What gets you through a hectic work day? I love working with my chickens so just thinking about how well they are doing and the love for my job is enough to get me through. Have you ever worked at another location? No 8

IS MENTAL HEALTH AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH? Did You Know?

āā Approx. 450 million people currently suffer from mental illness. āā Almost two-thirds of people that are suffering never seek help from a health professional. āā Mental disorders are one of the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Why? Mainly because of Stigma and Discrimination With those facts I would say YES! Mental health is just as important as physical health because they are both so connected. It has been proven that untreated mental health illness can lead to the brain getting worse, physical issues like chronic pain, financial problems, lack of job stability, prison, being taken advantage of by others, and death by suicide. In fact, 90% of suicides are caused by mental illness. Imagine how many lives we could help by giving these individuals the proper support? 14

Let’s be real… Sometimes it’s hard for us to put ourselves in someone else's shoes. It’s a struggle to understand what can’t easily be proven or seen. And it seems easier to write them off as…mad, sick or dem head jus nuh good instead of asking questions to better understand their symptoms and reality. Mental illness is not a personal failure. It’s time we End the Stigma. āā Place your own mental health as a top priority. ýý Don’t be afraid to seek treatment or go to a therapist. āā Be supportive of your friends and family who experience mental illness. ýý Ask them questions to learn more and provide support. āā Respectfully correct individuals who disregard mental illness. The only way our society can change for the better is through education and kindness.

It’s been a tough week, ups and downs, but here are some handy tips for dealing with your mental health at work. without beating yourself up about it. āā Congratulating yourself for little things like getting up, eating breakfast and getting to work on time can really help to ease stress and focus on things you need to get done.

1. Talk to Someone āā Find someone in your workplace you trust, a colleague who has your back as it helps to be honest about your feelings. 2. Take A Break āā Taking a short breaks to collect yourself and piece things back together without having to worry.

4. Accept the Bad Days āā Not every day is gunna be gravy, sometimes you’re just not feeling up to it. It’s best to just ride it out, think positively and telling yourself that tomorrow you’re going to wake up feeling great.

3. Don’t be so Hard on yourself āā Living with mental health is hard enough as it is 15

P&C: Heart of Teams

The HEART is an organ that pumps blood right throughout our bodies. If the heart stops, blood doesn’t flow. And if blood doesn’t flow, the rest of our organs don’t get the oxygen they need to keep us alive.

1. The best way to communicate is to OVER communicate. Speak, write, ask, use images, repeat.

You could say then that the HEART is the engine of our body; making sure all other body parts are supplied with what they need to not only function properly, but to function at their best.

2. Fun is as essential to work as work itself. Use games in your team’s daily lives. Trust us – it’s not a time waster. Laughter goes a long way.

This is why a HEART ATTACK can be so fatal. These attacks come in the form of clogged arteries from excess cholesterol, for example. If your heart shuts down and isn’t resuscitated in time (brought back to pumping again), the rest of your anatomy automatically comes to a halt. Simply put: We need our hearts to live. We know you didn’t sign up for a biology lesson, but isn’t it interesting how similar the function of the heart is to the function of a team? Each unique team in an organization operates to keep the life blood flowing through a company, to keep a company alive. If there are issues within a team (like clogged arteries), the team cannot function properly. And what happens when each team is in disarray? Productivity becomes hampered (bad blood!) which starts to affect the output of the company as a whole. So, how would you rate the synergy of your team? Are you working well together? Achieving your goals? Building relationships? Communicating? We want to share some tips to help you get to the heart of your team, in case some of you may need some CPR to get your hearts pumping again:

18

3. There’s more to life than CBG. Yes we said it! Take your teams and go explore that life sometimes – movies, hiking, go-kart racing. It’s worth it. 4. Address conflicts directly. The best way to resolve a conflict is to confront it. Don’t gossip and keep secrets. Be open and honest with the intent to mend a relationship, not suffocate it. 5. Actually get to know the people you spend 75% of your time with. Don’t have to be best friends, but come on, even hardened criminals are less likely to harm if they know a personal fact or two about their victim (true story!).

CB eZine

W e D i P e opl e

A microwave approach (quick & easy way) to use those 5 tips is to implement a HUDDLE with your teams! This can be a few days for the week where you all get together and play a quick game, watch a short video, discuss top work priorities, celebrate work accomplishments, or even share a meal (I see you Accounts). So what are you waiting on? Go get pumped again!!

The fight against plastic. You can make a difference. DID YOU KNOW 8 MILLION METRIC TONS of plastic ends up in the ocean every year Americans alone annualy discard more than 30 MILLION TONS OF PLASTIC If our current practices continue, plastic input into the ocean is expected to double by 2025. Consider this: by 2050, there may be more plastic than fish in the ocean by weight. Yet under Trump, the U.S. has committed to a $180 billion investment in plastic production for 2018, increasing their current production by approximately 40%. Plastic debris causes the deaths of more than one million seabirds every year, as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals. Entanglement, ingestion and habitat disruption all result from plastic ending up in the spaces where animals live. Plastic debris outweighs zooplankton in our ocean by a ratio of 36 to 1. Mass production of plastics, which began just six decades ago, has accelerated so rapidly that it has created 8.3 billion metric tons—most of it in disposable products that end up as trash. Of the 8.3 billion metric tons that have been produced, 6.3 billion metric tons have become plastic waste. Of that, only 9% has been recycled. The vast majority— 79% —accumulates in landfills or sloughs off in the natural environment as litter. At some point, much of it ends up in the ocean, the final sink. 20
