May is Childs’ month and you don’t have to be a parent to understand how

important the children are to our future. Many people say youth is wasted on the young. I am not one of them. I have been a long time believer in letting the kids speak; they have a lot to say, and now more than ever we need to do just that. Our world is aging. Currently about 9% of the world's population is 65 years and over and that percentage is expected to jump to 17% by 2050. Some countries like Japan have already hit 27%. That number is crazy! If that’s not alarming to you – it should be.

With program inclusions such as mentorship and coaching, it is a merger between traditional practices and know-how, and young fresh ideas to take the company into our new phases of development. Externally, our youth outreach is getting stronger too. This year, Nutramix has been focused on the theme ‘Youth in Agriculture’ which through our calendar, social and other media, sheds some light on amazing stories of youth all across Jamaica, making great progress in the agri-world. They are proving that you don’t have to wait to be a seasoned veteran to be considered an inspiration in the field. So often

JFDF heads to Sunrise Breakfast Jamaica Food & Drink Festival knows no good gathering can be great without good food! Those who attended the Sunrise Breakfast Party at Constant Spring Golf Club on Carnival Saturday were treated to a mini JFDF execution to get people pumped up and in the know about the Festival’s 5th staging. Smart Eggs at Mona Prep’s Mini “Egg Drop” Competition On May 2nd, the 2018 Smart Egg’s Egg Drop Competition Winner, Mona Preparatory, held its first Mini Egg Drop internally for their students. The competition aims to teach children about the benefits of Smart Eggs through promoting nutrition, science and fun all in one. Twenty-seven teams, made up of students between Grades 3 -6 signed up to participate in the day’s activities. Each team created their contraption, that held their single Smart Egg safely, hoping to survive 4 rounds of ‘falls’ from progressively longer drops, starting at 10ft, 20ft, 30ft and the final round of 40ft. As each round saw teams disqualified with the cracking of their Smart Egg, only one winner could be crowned.

250 m go f pe

Smart Eggs proudly participated in the day by engaging directly with the children and teachers, and educating them about the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids for their growing minds and bodies. Delicious egg and cheese sandwiches were also given to the students and teachers, along with fun giveaways and cookies courtesy of our partner, National Bakery. Check out the highlights. 4

Nutramix Supports St. Mary Agri-Expo for Easter The annual St. Mary Agri-Expo took place on Easter Monday where farmers from St. Mary and some even as far as Kingston came to enjoy the day. The-BIG-Feed was happy to again support the event, and interact with some of our customers. Our Technical Sales Representatives got to meet and speak with many small farmers and learn about their types of farms. Our baby chicks display was a big hit, especially with the kids, who were in absolute glee when they were asked if they wanted to hold one of the chicks. Our veterinary and livestock teams were also on site to meet and interact with the curious and potential farmers to give all who visited our booth a proper BIG Feed experience. 7

Celebrates Mothers’ Day

Depicting Motherhood by Stacey-Ann Francis Today I send my strength and love to those women who has experienced miscarriages, stillbirths, fertility issues or even burying a child. For all the times you wanted to give up but you still pushed through. All the times you had to fight, held your head high as the tears caress your face and hit your blouse and pillowcase like a bullet, yet you kept your dignity, swallowed your pride and rode on the tide of FAITH, I want to thank you. Thank you for seeing imperfections, but working on them daily. Thank you for being selfless and giving, even when it wasn’t reciprocated. Thank you for seeing your uglies and not painting them white, but understanding that in darkness, you can experience and be a great light. Thank you for remaining faithful and true. Thank you for your patience. When I was at my lowest you were right by my side and at my highest you cheered me on. Happy Mother’s day to you my love. 8

Dr. Syddonie Gyle’s Story… For some women the introduction to motherhood is not always one that evokes happy feelings. Many pregnancies end in emergency surgeries where both baby and mother are at high risk. I know this all too well. Having been hospitalized for approximately a month before giving birth then having the baby on life support and hospitalized for an additional three and half weeks is no joke. One can lose their mind. I saw my baby’s head shorn on both sides and at the front to faciliate catheters. Needle marks covered her body and I could not enjoy the pleasure of watching her sleep in the comfort of our home.

prayer, such days become bearable. And while everybody’s story might not climax into the discharge of a healthy baby, I am eternally grateful that mine did. Coming out of that life changing experience I am more appreciative of the blessing of life and live each day to the fullest. We are three years and counting. Mommy life rocks!

However, with the love and support of close family and friends and much

How motherhood has changed me… Florett Palmer: Motherhood is a never ending journey. Mom, it hurts! Mom may I? mom I did it, mom I love you. For every mother those words capture our hearts. Motherhood is taking a daily challenge knowing you have the responsibility to change a life, going through the best and the worst times, yet willing to do it all over again. Its finding the strength to overcome situations you thought would end you, its unconditional love. Raising my children brings new meaning to every moment of my life. 9

Sherene Fraser: Nothing else gives me the kinda joy than hearing my daughter says “Mommy”.....it tickles my stomach. However challenging some days are, that spectrum of emotion gives my life purpose.

T unnel V entilation at H ouse 4 Over the years the local egg industry has seen significant growth in the agricultural sector, with Chippenham Farms at the helm as the number one supplier of hearty, healthy and safe premium quality eggs across Jamaica. Eggs are packed with an array of high quality proteins, minerals, vitamins good fats and other trace nutrients. In fact studies have showed that one large egg contains; only 77 calories, with 5 grams of fat and 6 grams of protein with all 9 essential amino acids. They are rich in iron, phosphorus, selenium and vitamins A, B12, B2 and B5 and our Smart Eggs are loaded with over 250mg of Omega-3 fatty acids which help in brain, bone and foetal development. As the demand for eggs grew we examined our ability to capitalize on this expanding market. In full operation, the Chippenham arm is home to over 75,000 birds in 9 houses. Over the years we realised that we have not been achieving optimum production on our larger producing houses, (Houses 4,5 & 6) which can house 13000- 15000 birds producing on average 33 cases 10

of eggs per day. Our analysis revealed that the major reason for this is poor ventilation in these houses. This gave birth to the decision to utilize the technology available in the industry to deal with this challenge- tunnel ventilated chicken houses. And a further decision to convert house #4 the smallest of the three houses to tunnel ventilation. Benefits converting to tunnel ventilation at house 4: \\ Improve house ventilation. \\ Improve egg production by 15% \\ Improve liveability ( life of bird) \\ Increase number of birds placed in the house from 13200 to 16500. CB Group continues to be the trend setter in the industry in Jamaica as we will be the first Commercial layer Farm to produce table eggs in a tunnel ventilated house. The house is currently being renovated and will house its first batch of birds by the end of May. 11

Safety week at Copperwood was awesome! We started and ended the week with safety trivia where winners received prizes! On Tuesday, April 30, 2019 there was a treasure hunt where teams of no more than 5 members were asked to find as many items that could go into a first aid kit within an hour. The team that found the most items won a prize. Gooooo team Avengers! On Wednesday, May 1, 2019 we hosted a safety seminar at the Lucea Church Hall entitled: Safety Matters - Identification & Recognition of Workplace Hazards and Injuries Associated with these Hazards presented by Dr. Rao. The week of safety created such a buzz, we hope it will continue throughout the year. Here are some of our highlights: 12

Annual Thanksgiving Service On Sunday April 7, staff of CB Group attended the Meadowbrook United Church as part of our annual tradition to unite in giving thanks with our families and friends. In giving thanks, we express our gratitude and show appreciation for our many blessings. Liturgist Elder Patrick Sterling moderated the ceremony which was led by Acting Minister Rev. Dr. Derik Davison. He welcomed each of our CB Group executives, and our CEO, Mr Mark Haskins greeted the congregation on behalf of the CB Group. People & Culture’s Coretta Anderson (P&C) gave the First Reading and Customer Care’s songbird Yanique Simpson sang words of joy and worship.

“We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.”

Many of us experience renewed hope because we turn our eyes onto what is most important. What if we spent time each day in giving thanks and prayer? When your heart is filled with gratitude, there is little room to worry or complain. After the service, CBG staff and friends gathered outside to enjoy refreshments and food over laughter and conversation, courtesy of the Group.

Ways to Save when Shopping 1. Try a spend fast. Just for a month, restrict your spending to only those things you absolutely need to survive, like rent, utilities, medicines, basic food, gas or bus fare, etc. Ask yourself before you buy anything, “Do I need this to survive?” and if the answer is No, then don’t buy it. Things you will avoid buying for 30 days include movie tickets, junk food, fancy coffee drinks, clothing, party tickets, haircuts, etc. Doing this just for a month will help you become much more mindful of your spending habits and help you save a ton of money. 2. Buy second-hand. These days you can buy almost anything—furniture, clothing, electronics—used and in good shape. This reduces your consumer footprint and saves one more thing from going to a landfill! 3. Quit buying bottled water! Bottled water is usually no better than your typical tap water–it just costs more, contains plastic toxins from the bottles and leaves a trail of waste everywhere. Get a faucet water filter and a reusable water bottle to save money and help the environment. Learn how to choose a good water filter. » 4. Buy recycled paper products. The good brands of toilet paper, computer paper and other paper products work just as well as virgin paper, but save tons of chlorine pollution from the bleaching process, and conserve millions of trees and gallons of water. 5. Cook from scratch whenever possible. The more food you make from simple basic, minimally-packaged ingredients like vegetables, grains, meats, eggs and spices, the more you will save on groceries and the less impact you will have on the environment. On top of it all, you’ll be a lot healthier, too! Bonus points for eating in season and buying locallygrown food. 20

CB eZine

G o G r ee n

6. Read your favourite newspaper or magazine online. Almost all magazines and newspapers have digital versions now, and many of them are free. Reading them online saves tons of trees and the energy and fuel expended on creating, delivering and recycling paper versions. 7. When buying big items, spend more to buy things that will last. Buying a coffee maker that will last 5-10 years is a better use of your money than buying a cheap one that will break in a year. Doing this keeps things out of landfills for longer and saves you money and headache. 8. Use online banking. Online banking saves you time, stamps, gas, and reduces the amount of mail coming to your house. A lot of banks are offering incentives to go online, too. Don’t be afraid: it’s much easier for a thief to grab your bank statements out of your mailbox than it is for them to access your accounts online.
