Let me take this opportunity to welcome you all to the June edition of our Chat Bout Magazine. I am sure that all of us often wonder how we can become better employees, better parents, better people and most importantly how we can positively influence the lives of others around us. I wish to share some principles that I try to apply from my favourite author, Earl Nightingale, and I do wish that everyone who read this could benefit in the same way through application. Here goes six of Earl Nightingale’s 10 Rules for Success: Improve your Attitude. A good attitude is like fuel in a motor vehicle, it can take one on a long and interesting journey where new discoveries can be made. Endeavour to look for the best in all situations.

Recognize opportunity. Opportunities come in different forms and the only people who will benefit are those who are prepared. Success happens where opportunity meets preparation. CB Group continues to grow and new opportunities will present themselves to those who are prepared. Are you looking diligently and preparing yourself to take advantage of these upcoming opportunities? Exercise your Mind A prepared mind will not be surprised by change that is inevitable and will often rise to the occasion and count it as a blessing. Stay current in your profession and be willing to contribute your opinion. Invest in Yourself A great man once said that if you empty your pockets in your head, your pockets would never be empty again. Investment should not be viewed as only monetary but could simply be spending quality time with friends and family. Increase your Service I have always held the view that we should give more than we are paid for. As our company grows, we all have to be prepared to do what is 1

necessary to ensure that we become not necessarily the biggest but the best at producing quality products that exceed our customers’ expectation. We should also ensure that we provide voluntary service to a cause that helps in nation building. Don’t Follow the Follower A wise man knows that if two men are walking and they both agree on everything then there is no need for one of them. Do not be afraid to disagree with someone if your viewpoint is different. A disagreement does not have to escalate into disrespect. I hope that all can benefit from some of the suggestions made and I look forward to continuing this discussion later. Enjoy the Journey,

Persons were encouraged to look out for the DRM logo on dairy products - an indicator that these particular products support local dairy farmers.

Celebrates World Milk Day What is milk without cookies, and World Milk Day without Drink Real Milk!

On May 31st, the Drink Real Milk campaign executed its first Corporate Pop-Up, and treated the employees of JPS, Digicel and HGS with a different type of breakfast - milk and cookies! The event, themed “Start off REAL”, gave an opportunity to educate persons on the benefits of drinking real cow’s milk, dispel misconceptions about milk and explain the significance of the Drink Real Milk logo. Over 1,500 employees started their morning “REAL”with a box of milk courtesy of Serge, and a cookie to enjoy their milky beverage with. As employees mentally prepared for a typical day of emails and meetings, they were surprised when greeted by the morning glow of the Drink Real Milk team, and unusually early morning chit-chats about milk and dairy farmers sparked. Persons were happy to collect their milk and cookie, and were eager to share their opinions which led to heated discussions about milk alternatives, availability of milk, and a declaration of love for milk. 4

Meanwhile, World Milk Day celebrations continued in the heart of Half Way Tree where 300 students across the island were invited to the Carter Hall, The Holy Cross Church for the ‘Poetry Club’s Lunch and Learn’ event where DRM sponsored flavoured cow’s milk for students’ breakfast and lunch. Representatives from our Drink Real Milk partners, The Jamaica Dairy Development Board (JDDB) and Island Dairies also attended the event in support of our World Milk Day activities. JDDB brought cows and milking goats to conduct milking demonstrations, while Island Dairies provided the milk for their meals. Ending the day with almost 2000 milk moustaches, the Drink Real Milk team enjoyed engaging our youths and the young at heart on the benefits of drinking real milk!

Nutramix loves its farmers and supports the communities they come from and for the month of May we got to spend time with them showing them that we care with our annual Nutramix Double Six Domino Tournament. We started our journey with a bang on May 4 at the Christiana High School in Manchester. The Technical Sales and Livestock Support Reps for the area surprised participants with a gate prize that was a big hit within the community. For the second week when the team journeyed to Korner Kafe in St. Catherine and kicked back with members of the community. Our volunteers had the pleasure of meeting students from the Charlemont High School that eagerly signed up with the hopes of winning the prizes for their school. Unfortunately, they did not make it to the finals but we were definitely impressed with their enthusiasm! Our third week was all the way in the Logwood community in Hanover and the BIG fun did not stop! Not only did the community enjoy the domino games but they had lots of great community activities for all ages. The kids ran races and the Technical Sales Representative brought a bounce-about for them to enjoy. We played football and the Technical Sales Representative even organized a tune for tune sound clash in between rounds with 2 DJs from the community. We started the month of June with the fourth stop in the bread basket parish of St. Elizabeth right in the heart of Santa Cruz. The games, like the temperature at the Santa Cruz Transport Centre were hot! Emotions ran high as players displayed their unwavering passion for the game. Players came out to play hard and play hard they did! We can’t wait to see what the other parishes have to offer! Check us out for the rest of June and the month of July as we visit other communities across the island as we continue our tournament and have lots of BIG fun! 7

R e s t ru c t u r e Robert Hunt and Dr. Audrie McNab have

been the pillars of our pork growth for a number of years, providing unmatched technical expertise. As we continue to streamline our pork throughput, we are adjusting their portfolios.

Robert Hunt will now be the Grow Out Manager – Pigs. His core responsibility will be to oversee our external pig farms, excepting sow farms.

Nadine Dawson, originally from Arnold Road, has made her mark at NPG since 2016. As the pork operations continue to grow, we are pleased to promote her from Administrative Clerk to Administrative Assistant. She now has expanded responsibility for purchasing for both NPG and Lucea pork locations, and in fact all other pork related needs. Congrats Nadine!

Audrie McNab will now be the Commercial Breeding Manager – Pigs. Her core function is to give management oversight at our Newport Genetics facility and all sow operations. All staff based at NPG will now report to her, via Rickardo Mellis. 12

Get to Know: Florence Smallwood Office Attendant Her journey began at Newport Genetics in 2006, as office attendant, under the supervision of Mr. Williams and Mr. Robert Hunt who succeeded him in 2008. Her job entails cleaning and maintaining the office and barn office areas on a daily basis, also doing laundry. She is an active member of her church Grace Tabernacle Pentecostal Church for more than 28 years and has two children Lisa (highlighted CBG scholar student) and Jenor (currently in grade 10 in high school), and is wife to one lucky man Mr. Curtis Smallwood. What do you love about your job: To be able to maintain a clean and healthy environment for all staff and adhering to the bio-hazard policies set for the location. She looks forward in coming to work observing the fascinating process of pig rearing done in a not-so backyard setting. What do you like to eat: Sweet corn, ackee + corn pork, gungo rice and pea. What do you do for fun: Hanging out with family and reading. If you were to visit any location within the group, where would that be? The infamous Arnold Road, the poultry processing plant. Where would be your first go to place for a vacation? One of the beaches in Montego Bay, I have never been there all my life living in Jamaica. What was your experience like the first time travelling outside of Jamaica: It was strange having to answer a computer that was asking me questions and even took my picture. However, it was a pleasant experience, hassle free, but outside was coooooold, my first seeing touching snow, but is as good. I believe this is a very good company and I am extremely grateful having being a part of the family, especial because it helps young people to strive. 13

LEADERSHIP TRAINING Agile Leadership

CB eZine

In May, CB Group’s primary leadership team was submerged in a two day training session exploring the theme of AGILITY, or being AGILE. The interactive training was led by UTECH lecturer and certified counsellor Henry Lewis, who was also trained in Singapore. But what does AGILE even mean? The standard definition is being able to move easily and quickly. In a project management world this means breaking larger assignments into small achievable pieces and monitoring your achievements closely to see if anything needs to be adjusted as you progress. In a business sense, this really refers to how decisions are made, how adaptable we are to change, and how effectively we accomplish tasks in a short timeframe. Because the world is changing as rapidly as it is with new policies, laws, and even trends being invented every other week, it can become more and more difficult for companies to stay AGILE without being burned out, tired, stressed or on top of all that, flat out broke. The leadership team spent some time learning a few key tools and principles to help shape our culture to be more AGILE. As if being AGILE wasn’t enough, the leadership also learned a new term to describe the environment the CB Group is expected to be AGILE IN. This environment is known as VUCA (pronounced voo-ka). VUCA stands for Volatile Uncertain Complex and Ambiguous. Which in a nutshell means stressful pressuring chaos.

14

CB eZine

We Di People

J u n e

2 019

So what are the tools we can use to thrive in a VUCA environment? For starters: SEEK CLARITY. A lot of times we give or get directives that are misunderstood. The best way to resolve this is ask for a clearer explanation. REMEMBER THE CUSTOMER COMES FIRST. Our highest priority should be to satisfy our customers. We can only satisfy them by understanding what they want. This comes from, you guessed it, seeking clarity. KNOW YOUR BRAIN. Our brain actually has two main sections or hemispheres responsible for different functions and aspects of our personality. The RIGHT SIDE of your brain deals with creativity, imagination, and insight. The LEFT SIDE of your brain deals with analysis, numbers, logic. By knowing the stronger side of your brain you can leverage your strengths to adapt to change, and lean on team members when the other side of the brain is needed. KNOW YOUR CULTURE. There are 4 types of company cultures that speak to being dynamic and stable. You could be START-UP, AGILE, TRAPPED, OR STABLE. Agile is where you want to be so aim high! The leadership team was also given a chance to reanchor themselves by exploring how we manage our energy on a daily basis. Not how we manage our TIME, but our ENERGY. This can be done physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. In true CBG fashion (pun not intended) we had a little competition to get our leadership in the AGILE frame of mind, dressed for speed and flexibility of course! Big ups to Sharon Black who won this competition with flying colours but Tina Hamilton and Claudette Wynter were close runner ups. We also had group assignments to depict a movie trailer of AGILITY where group name MORPHLE took home the gold. 15

Shared Services Restructure for Agility CB Group family, do you know all of our 4 divisions? Livestock & Animal Feed

Crops

Foods

Shared Services

I.T. is now the Business & Technology department (BizTech)

‘Shared Services’ is the division responsible for supporting all the other business functions. But, in to support the Group in being more ‘agile’, there is a reorganizing of resources that allows for separate focuses on (1) developing future innovations, while (2) maintaining critical focus on keeping our core operations running smoothly.

Technology is so important today that we need to have an even more integrated approach to the way we do business. We will be using technology to remain relevant to our growing business needs, and so have revamped the I.T. department to Business & Technology. There will also be functional changes to give greater emphasis to how we serve our clients. The intention is to split the focus between maintaining existing (core) operations, and pressing gas on future innovations.

The first two departments to receive this restructure are I.T. and People & Culture.

The new department org chart looks something like this:

16

CB eZine

We Di People

People & Culture department splits into 3 teams As a business we are growing rapidly! Therefore P&C will be reorganized to ensure they can recruit more quickly, develop our people better, and improve on our standard of personnel service. The new org chart will look something like this:

In order to reduce the time it takes to recruit stars into CBG, recruitment will be separated from the Talent Development team and gain focus thorough a Recruitment Manager who will be deliberately a sourcing new talent instead of waiting for talent to apply to us. With the recruitment function removed from the Talent Development team, they will be able to better focus on creative ways of developing our people and keeping you engaged through training programmes, performance management programmes, and all-new, rewards and recognition programmes, and so the introduction of a new role, Talent Development Manager. The third change to P&C concerns the level of service we provide everyday with your basic survival needs including payroll, contract renewals, insurance coverage, doing job letters, and salary deductions and so there will be a Personnel Services Manager. Stay tuned to learn about more changes. 17

Big up to Shannon Haldane, Talent Development Manager CB: How long have you been with the CB Group? SH: 8 years this August (but technically 9 as I started as a temp. While there, Matthew Lyn turned up to my surprise and they both delivered the news. CB: What were some of the immediate emotions that you felt? SH: Gratitude. My dream is that we can make every employee feel the same love they give to the company. May just be a fantasy fairy tale dream, but that’s what all the best dreams

18

CB: When work is particularly challenging, what helps you to get by and persevere? SH: Singing/listening to Disney songs (yes, I’m that young and not ashamed). Also lots of prayer and sound counsel from trusted friends and co-workers. CB: If you weren’t in the field you currently are in, what other career path would you be on? SH: A psychologist/counsellor. For sure. CB: Outside of work, what is Shannon like? SH: Anything with my husband makes me happy. I’m also part of a youth NGO. This takes up a chunk of my time. Otherwise, Netflix it is. CB: 5 words you’d use to describe yourself.

CB eZine

SH: Compassionate. Principled. Animal-lover. Art-lover. God-led. CB: Share something that others may not know about you or may be surprised to learn about you. SH: I used to dunk Oreos in orange juice as a snack. I even wrote a poem about it. Try it! (Oh and yes, I used to write poetry).

We Di People AR: Paulette Hollingsworth and Nathan Nembhard. Well, I always remember them telling me the days were about 10 hours and I should wear Dockers to the plant. CB: What are some of the fondest memories at the CBG? AR: When I was leaving Arnold Road, the staff did a going away party to show their appreciation. CB: How and where were you when you got the great news about your promotion? AR: I was at my desk and Nathan Nembhard wrote me a heartfelt letter informing me (I found the same letter on the internet a few days later).

Big up to Andre Reid, Copperwood Farms Plant Manager CB: How long have you been with the CB Group? AR: August 2019 will make 8 years CB: How did you get connected to CB and where did it start? AR: I applied to an advertisement in the gleaner classifieds I started in Production at Arnold Road. CB: Do you remember the first person(s) you met of the CB Group, and what was your memory of the interaction like?

CB: What were some of the immediate emotions that you felt? AR: Initially there were no emotions, and then a few weeks later I was pleased with myself. CB: What are some of your dreams for the Group and for the agricultural sector of JA? AR: For the group to strategically grow as industry leaders. For the agriculture sector I would like to see a bit more awareness on the impact of climate change on the industry CB: Any advice for the person who may step into your old shoes (old role)? AR: Don’t mess up. CB: When work is particularly challenging, what helps you to get by and persevere?

19

J u n e

2 019

AR: Sitting in the van for a few minutes and calling someone in the group that I’m sure is having a difficult day, this shows me that my day isn’t that bad (so anyone in accounts or inventory). CB: If you weren’t in the field you currently are in, what other career path would you be on? AR: Maintenance/Engineering CB: Outside of work, what is Andre like? (hobbies, how do you spend your time, etc) AR: I like sports, I play rugby as well. I spend my time working and watching YouTube clips. CB: 5 words you’d use to describe yourself. AR: Charismatic, reliable, proactive, difficult, flexible. CB: Share something that others may not know about you or may be surprised to learn about you. AR: I was on the school choir when I was 8. CB: Anything in particular you’d like to leave our readers with? AR: I would like to “big up” people I have consistently worked with the past few years that helped me a lot along the way I was fortunate to learn and interact with a few people outside production. I used to be very selfish with information that I gathered but once I started to share with my team members at work I started to grow with the company and I quickly realised it’s not what you know, it’s what the people around you know.

#TrashTournamentJA for Labour Day This Labour Day was the first staging of the Kingston Harbour Trash Tournament, organized by Brandon McKoy. Last year’s Labour Day, he gathered with a couple friends and headed out on the harbour to clean up and collect trash. This year he decided to get more persons involved for a one-day initiative to capture some of the marine debris littering our ocean surface.

Dubbed “#TrashTournamentJA”, in just a matter of days, the event saw nearly 100 sponsors support. Their donations ranged from security, food and beverage, water conservation kits, sun block, gym memberships, supermarket and home centre vouchers, caps and backpacks, reusable cups and straws, restaurant gift certificates, trash bags and fishing nets, and much more for the volunteers and the winners of the numerous categories. At 9am, all registered boats - large, small, or canoe, and their teams took off into the world’s 7th largest natural harbour, to gather all the garbage that they could. By 2pm, boats made their way back to the Royal Jamaica Yacht Club, where their large garbage bags, old metal scraps and other waste were weighed. Over 11,330 pounds of trash was collected over the span of 5 hours, all taken by Recycling Partners of Jamaica. CB Foods was more than happy to support this ‘Go Green’ initiative by providing complimentary PAN Chicken and Copperwood jerked pork to all the volunteers upon arrival to the dock. 20

CB eZine

Go Green

Live Better In true ‘Live Better’ form, we all need to play our parts, no matter how small, to protect our environment. Habits such as refusing plastic straws when purchasing a box juice, keeping your waste until there is proper disposal available, and bringing your own water bottle to your workplace and refill as needed rather than purchasing single use packaged waters, all add uup.
