welcome Howdy Family, Welcome to the September edition of our loved Chat Bout Magazine. It seems like just yesterday we were wishing each other “Happy New Year” and making resolutions for 2019. We are almost at the end of summer, and what a scorcher it was. Big up all my Virgo peeps

Being my birthday month and as I get older and hopefully wiser, I feel compelled to reflect more and engage in more introspection. This is the time that I make my own New Year’s resolutions. I have made resolutions before and failed to accomplish them, so this year my new approach is very much in alignment with CB’s approach. I will put together my personal 3-year plan. What about you? Quite often, we have objectives/resolutions/goals/a bucket list, whatever it is that you call it; unachieved because of lack of a plan, passion and/or stick-to-itiveness. Whatever the reason might be, a new approach is necessary. I would like to share with you an unoriginal 7-step approach that I personally will be implementing. Step 1: Dream it. Dream BIG. Every action begins in the heart and mind. Step 2: Set the goals. It must have a positive impact, and be smart. Be specific and realistic. Think of potential obstacles and real solutions. Step 3: Write it down. Write down in detail the action items. Always be practical. Set timelines. Step 4: Share it. Tell someone who truly cares about you. Get advice. Share with someone that will care enough to check on your progress and hold you accountable. Get support. Step 5: Act. Take care of yourself first then… follow the steps you wrote down. Do not get distracted by things that have nothing to do with your goals. Step 6: Examine your plan periodically. If a plan does not work or part of a plan does not work, find an alternative. Step 7: Positive affirmations, gratefulness and joy. • Affirm with faith and feelings that your goal(s) is already achieved. • Have a heart of gratitude everyday no matter what happens. Thank God. 1

• Enjoy the moments. Be happy. At CB Group, we are in planning mode, our Voyage will sail beginning January 2020 and dock December 2022. We are busy, consulting, setting goals and writing our plans. Many of you are involved in this process and the plans will be shared with everyone in the Group at the right time. So whether you choose to make your New Year’s resolution in January 2020 or in your next birthday month. Get Started. Martin Luther King, Jr said, “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step”. Before I go, a small request, please encourage and/or help another to achieve their goals. Encourage that person to pull someone else alongside them and so on. Together we all achieve. As one of our teammates puts it “Separate but Together” (Lol…you know yourself). Blessings.

Regional 1 Fires Up at Folly Oval Time surely flies; just a few weeks ago we were gearing up for PAN Regional 1 in Portland. We got some rain, a lot of sun but indeed it was great fun at Folly Oval on Saturday, August 24th. Gates opened at 12noon and all 35 PAN Competitors from Kingston & St. Andrew, St. Catherine, St. Ann, St. Mary, Portland and Trelawny were geared up in their CB Chicken fit. A winner and runner-up were selected from each parish (first place wins $50,000, while second place wins $30,000), and they both advance to the PAN Grand Final on October 27 at Grizzly’s Plantation in St. Ann. Patrons came out early and our PAN Partners kept them engaged with activities that challenged them physically and mentally. Comedian Duffy Shepherd held the crowd of over 5000 patrons, with various on-stage activities leaving patrons with a belly full of laughter. We all stayed hydrated with the refreshing Sparkling Cran Wata and many indulged in various food options from Copperwood Pork, Bad Dawg Sausages to Happy Food Soups and yummy National snacks. Red Stripe Bucket Deals were a hit and patrons definitely enjoyed responsibly. As the sun began to set and the Fluffy Diva Miss Kitty took the stage over 1000 more patrons joined the family fun filled entertainment. We had performances from gospel sensation Ronedell Postive and popular dancehall artist Govana who reeled off his latest hits.

What’snew? Copperwood on the Move This summer, Copperwood Pork got some new outdoor branding. our fleet acts as a moving billoards from community to community, and so, we decided to refresh some of our delivery trucks and team pickups, to help boost exposure of the brand.

Nutramix Supports Grand Opening of Agriculture Hub Farm Store

The Nutramix Sales and Marketing teams travelled to Port Maria, St Mary on September 5th to attend the opening of the Agriculture Hub Farm Store. Owner and former Nutramix Technical Sales representative, Balfour “Bally” Thomas, along with the support from his Nutramix Technical Sales representative, Anthony Brown treated the people of Port Maria. The early morning rain didn’t discourage persons, as many made their way to celebrate with Mr Thomas. With Danree Delancy as Emcee, and Bad Dawg Sausages and CB Chicken smoking on the grill, customers were invited to dance, sing and purchase Nutramix feed for a chance to win prizes, courtesy of Nutramix. After thanking his customers for their support, Mr Thomas declared his continued support for the Nutramix brand, and currently only sells the BIG feed. Mr Thomas spent the remainder of the event celebrating in the company of his supporting former co-workers, and well-wishers. 6

Voyage Kicks Off Up Top Barn Competition NPG kicked off their Up Top Boss Barn Competition as part of their Voyage to the Unknown (Phase 2 of our journey to the Landing Zone). Rickardo Mellis and Dr. McNab were the masterminds behind the competition, aimed at making the Department of Copperwood NPG, the shining stars in the Copperwood Pork Division. Staff were divided into two teams - Commercial Team and Nucleus Team.

The competition lasts up until mid-December and the teams will be awarded monthly based on best performance in: a. Cleanliness b. Within budget Mortalities of sows and piglets c. Better first week low mortalities or rather liveabilities d. On-time reports 8

For the launch of the competition on September 6, staff were treated to light refreshments to complement the good vibes. They also wished to share their new office building and meeting room and welcome the entire CB Group family to their world.

P eninsula F arms Get to know Andrew White, Farm Supervisor What aspect of your new function excites you the most? In my role as a Technical Field Officer, I consulted contracted growers on best practices for the best results. Currently, acting in the capacity of Farm Supervisor, I am eager to implement these practices so as to directly impact performance. As such, these practices will enable us to see the full potential of our industry. The company-operated farms are equipped with all the resources needed for broiler production, so ultimately, the viability of our farmers depends on the efficiency of their operations and from Peninsula I can demonstrate this. What difference would you like to make at Peninsula? I would like to positively impact the culture of the operations, where I can assist in creating an environment that motivates employees to constantly aspire towards their full potential at all times and where excellence is effortless and considered the norm. How would you describe the vibe of your team? Eager. They are eager to be challenged and eager to show their worth. The farm has been consistently performing at a high level and the team is keen on conquering new feats. What are the values that drive you? Honesty. We must first be honest with ourselves by acknowledging our own shortcomings and constantly strive towards improvement. Loyalty. In realizing our purposes on earth we must commit to them, and remain loyal to them and this can be applied to all aspects of life. Humility. This opens us up to appreciating our blessings far more.

How would your family and friends describe you? Reserved, observant, easy to talk to, I would like them to say reliable dependable, focused and driven. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Watching movies and plays mostly and spending time with my family. Tributes to “Brother Roy” “Princess, a only fine one fault, it neva enough”. Generous to a fault, I can’t remember Mr. Roy ever saying no to me. His response was always, “Yes man, yes man, anything fi u you Princess”. A gentler, more honest and honorable person than Mr. Roy is hard to find and I know all our lives are a little better, to have known him. Rest in peace Mr. Roy.

Trevor Carnegie: Ahhhhh! Brother Roy, Fay Malcolm: Mr. Roy and I shared a mutual respect and comradery that dates way back. Like an old couple, comfortable with each other, we would talk about any and everything and then slowly drift off into silence as we quietly enjoy each other’s company. He was always early and many mornings when I opened the door to the office he would greet me, “Princess, any shine paper today?” “Not today Mr. Roy.” To which he responded, “So it go, sometimes coffee, sometimes tea”. And those mornings when the bread pudding came in the shine paper, Mr. Roy made me feel like the world’s greatest baker with all of his compliments; regardless of how the pudding tasted. He would say,

I keep hearing his voice saying “leave us!” - in a game of domino he would normally say this if you didn’t have a play after him (yuh pass). My thoughts picked up to think the he actually left us, andleft me with good fond memories of the gentleman he was; his infectious laugh, and that one time he got up and left the game when I had him pinned down for a ‘6-love’. I vowed never to play with him again and he kept saying “bredrin yuh really tek it personal”. Before you knew it, I was back again because he was that person you wanted to be around. Brother Roy would call minutes after 5pm and ask if I would be able to play dominoes and he understood the job was more important. I asked him to get a score board to write names 14

of persons who got the most ‘sixes’ but that didn’t materialize because his joy was to personally spread the word of all his victims that fell under his onslaught of sixes. Every shuffle or knocking sound of a domino will certainly bring back memories and every six I drop will be compliments of BROTHER ROY. May your soul rest in the arms of the God you serve my beloved brother.

Rose Miller: Mr. Roy was a fine example of a real gentleman, he had the qualities of how a father should be to his children. He had respect for all persons no matter their status in life and showed love to all who came in contact with. Mr. Roy was not a rich man but he was very rich in love and nothing is better than that, as God is love and we should love each other - that’s what he was all about. Mr. Roy was not only caring and kind, humble and a god fearing individual, but as a worker he was dedicated, trustworthy, loyal and reliable. If each of us would take a page out of the book of life of Mr. Roy, we would live a life that God wants us to live, to be caring and kind to each other, to love the lord and to be a peacemaker. Mr. Roy will ever be missed by us and will ever be remembered by us.

Angela Brooks: Mr. Reid was one of a kind. We shared some good times together on the patio in the mornings as he too, was an early bird. He’d share jokes and tell me about things that had happened to him in the past. He was a very kind man, always offering me goodies. Sometimes when I was extremely busy, I would tell him that I’d come for it soon, but unfortunately, most of the times by the time I went back, the goodies were gone. I would then say “Roy Reid where is the thing you have for me?”, he would reply by saying “Yuh neva want it Angie, mi give somebody else it man”. There and there I learnt a very valuable lesson - whenever I was offered anything from him, I’d take it before he gave it away. I remember once saying to him jokingly “Mi couldn’t be your wife because yuh woulda probably give mi weh long time.” I miss you dearly Mr. Reid, may your soul rest in peace.

Keshena James: Mr. Roy was such a sweet soul. A very kind, jovial and dependable being. He was like a father to many of us as he always ensured that we’d never go a day hungry. I can never forget the many times when I’d walk over to the lunch room during my little breaks & Mr. Roy was always there to ‘fill a gap’. By the time I was finish making a cup of tea he would appear with his kind gesture & a smile to offer something to eat. “Yuh want ah piece of bread & pear fi guh wid dat darling?.... mi have biscuit too inno….come man, come get suppn”. It’s the little things in life that gives us the greatest joy and for sure, Mr. Roy always warmed my heart. From his many jokes during a game of dominoes to just having a random chat during lunch. It’s very sad that you had to “leave us” but your memories will forever live on. Sleep well Daddy Roy.

Marlon Graham: In life, if one person remembers your name that means you made a change. I didn’t know him, however, he was a person that had to be known. Before 15

entering the office in the mornings I would look to see him on the chair or in the lunch area then I would shout out with a slight British accent “Brother Roy” and he would smile and then reply, “Yes brother Marlon”. Brother Roy loved to play dominoes, he would always say to me “playing dominoes sah?” I would laugh and reply “naah man your ting dat”. But eventually I gave in and we played dominoes. He won one game after game and just before he would drop that six, I would get lucky and win at least one game….then it’d go right back to the start. He didn’t mind, he enjoyed every game. I would eventually get ‘six’ and after I ran, he would laugh and then call me a ‘wounded solider’. It wasn’t about the game for me; it was because of him why I played. Truth is, all I did was match, but after playing against him I started to learn and I became a little better at his game. He was a man filled with wisdom and experiences; he had a lot of knowledge to share. It hurts, I wish I really spent time asking about his life experiences, challenges and how he managed to always be pleasant and happy. I think he left us with a very important message before he died, he said. “There are angels in this room” Brother Roy served a living god.

The CB Group High School Scholarship Programme is held to recognize the young talents who have continually made an immense contribution to our schools and the society.

High School Scholarship Awards 2019

On August 24, 2019 we gathered at the Knutsford Court Hotel not just to celebrate the achievements of our students, but also to give due regard to the values and morals which these awardees exemplify such as discipline, compassion and zeal for learning. Awards are a way to encourage good behaviour and inculcate a competitive spirit. With this in mind the CB Group has organized 25 Annual Award ceremonies to encourage its students. A brief history - we began with a small group in 1994 awarding the top performing boy and girl in their common entrance exams and since then we expanded to include all our 14 locations within the group as well as Third Party Contractors. The awards distributed were not just for recognizing those students who have performed exceptionally well in their academics, but also to honour those students who excelled in sports, performing arts, visual arts and community service. The aim is to recognize that extra talent of our students other than academics and motivate them to shine in their respective fields. We would like to extend special thanks to all the parents for joining with us and supporting our students. 16

Microplastics and Human Consumption Millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, polluting our seas, littering our beaches and endangering wildlife. CNN reported on June 24 that almost 1 million shoes and over 370,000 toothbrushes were among more than 400 million pieces of plastic recently found washed up on a remote group of islands in the Indian Ocean. Great chunks of plastic have been found inside the stomachs of everything from seabirds to whales, while tiny microplastics are eaten by fish and other sea creatures, ending up as part of the food chain. These plastic bits oftentimes end up in humans. A recent study found that globally:

Humans are swallowing an average of 5 grams of plastic each week What are microplastics? These are very small pieces of plastic that pollute the environment. They are not a specific kind of plastic, but rather any type of plastic fragment that is less than 5 mm in length according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. There is concern that microplastics could harm human health as they move through the marine food web. Microplastics both absorb and give off chemicals and harmful pollutants. 20

Reduction of plastic Many nations including Jamaica have banned plastic bags, and there are already some good signs globally. Thames21 is a group that organizes clean-ups along the foreshore of the River Thames, in the UK, and educates people to not pollute it. Luke Damerum, who works with the group, noted that as a group, they are having a real reduction in the amount of plastic bags and bottles that they find”. The group’s prime target now is wet wipes, which are often flushed down toilets and are discharged into the river from the sewers after heavy rainfall. They can end up lining the foreshore in a thick carpet. The wipes are broken down into

The Hudson Rivers in the US carries 300 million clothing fibres into the Atlantic Ocean each day according to a 2017 study. These plastic bits enter the water network when being washed.

We must each have our eyes on what the nature of what this problem is. Stay informed and be conscious about how your daily activities add to this epidemic.

Bad Dawg Jambalaya

2-3 Bad Dawg sausages, sliced 2 cups each chopped green peppers and onions 4 stalks celery, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 Tbsp. Cajun seasoning 1 ¼ cups long-grain white rice, uncooked

Heat oil in large deep nonstick skillet on medium-high heat. Add Bad Dawg, peppers, onions, celery, garlic and cajun seasoning; mix well. Cook 6 to 8 mins or until sausage is evenly browned and vegetables are crisp-tender, stirring frequently.

2. Add rice, tomatoes, broth, barbecue sauce and marinade; mix well. Bring to boil; cover. Simmer on medium-low heat 25 to 30 mins or until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. 3. Sprinkle with parsley.

Smart Eggs Chorizo and Cheese Pancakes

8 oz Caribbean Passion Chorizo sausage, finely diced

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp roughly chopped oregano leaves 7½ oz all-purpose flour ¾ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp baking soda 1 tsp kosher salt 2 tsp sugar 5 Smart Eggs, divided 2 tbsp vegetable or canola oil (plus more for cooking) 12 oz (about 1½ cups) buttermilk 4 (1-2oz each) slices cheese

Combine chorizo and olive oil in a large non-stick or cast iron skillet over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until chorizo is crisp. Transfer to a bowl, making sure to get all of the excess oil. Add oregano to chorizo and toss to combine. Wipe out skillet and set aside.

2. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, 1 Smart Egg, vegetable oil, buttermilk, and half of chorizo mixture in a large bowl and whisk together until it forms a batter. There should be no streaks of dry flour, but plenty of lumps are okay. 3. Return skillet to medium-low heat, add 1 tbsp vegetable oil, and heat until shimmering, about 1 min. Add 2 cheese slices (these will become the center of two pancakes). Cook until lightly browned on first side, about 1 min. Flip pancake and scatter a teaspoon of crisp chorizo on either side of each piece of pancake. 4. Ladle a few ounces of batter on top of the pancake and chorizo, completely covering it. Cook pancake without moving until well-browned and crisp on first side, 2 to 3 mins. Carefully flip and cook until browned on second side, about 2 mins longer. Transfer to a rack and set in a warm oven while you cook the remaining pancakes. 5.

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to cook remaining pancakes. Heat another tablespoon of oil in the skillet and place over medium-high heat. Break remaining 4 eggs into the skillet and cook until crisp on the bottom but yolks are still runny, about 1½ mins.

6. Serve pancakes immediately, topped with a fried egg and drizzled with remaining chorizo and chorizo oil.
