welcome For as long as I can remember (essentially since birth), February 1st has been my New Year’s Day. So when everyone else’s new year’s resolutions start to fizzle, I get an extra month of thought and deliberation on what I need my new year to be.

What I’ve noticed over the years is that people typically rush to get their affairs in order by December 31st and then create an elaborate plan for their perfect life come January 1. The reason why this doesn’t last most of the time is that we tend not to be realistic with our goals and we bite off more than we can chew. Now there is nothing wrong with being ambitious with our goals, as long as we are willing to fight through obstacles, work hard to get them done and not be afraid to ask for help when we need it. Because of the leap year, we get an extra day this month. I hope you use your extra day wisely and perhaps consider your new year’s resolutions - where you have gotten with them and why or why not. I’ll share with you what works for me. Tips on how to resolve your resolutions: āā Make your ultimate goal clear. āā Break it down into bite sized pieces and attack each piece with intent. āā Reward yourself at each milestone if that will keep you going. āā Focus on what you can control, but have a plan for the rest. āā Always keep the big picture in mind so you stay on the correct path. āā If you mess up, it’s ok to start from the top. āā And in all things remember to have faith and be grateful. That’s the thing about resolutions; you don’t need to wait until another new year to put your goals back into play.

Volunteer Appreciation Through the heat and the relentless rainfall, they continued to support our PAN man and women, working assiduously to make PAN 2019 one to remember - our PAN Volunteers.

After a day of fun and laughter, we filled our bellies over recapping our favourite moments from PAN 2019. Safe to say that everyone had a blast despite the cold water.

To show our sincere gratitude, we ventured to one of the island’s best tourist attractions. Yep, the team headed to St. Ann to Dunns River Falls on Saturday January 18, 2019. We were greeted with a beautiful day of warmth and sunshine, but ice cold waters running from the falls. We never minded that! To gear up properly for the climb, some team members invested in water shoes and got to climbing, while others opted out to relax instead on the beach, enjoying the waves rushing at their feet.

Thank you again, our PAN Volunteers! Fifteen years in, and you have helped to make PAN the momentous Jamaican experience that it has become today. See you for PAN 2020!

After successfully climbing the falls, it was time for a massage from the heavy showers of the waterfall. 2

NutraDays 2020 are here! The sales have been tallied and the results are in! To celebrate the achievements and continued support of its customers, Nutramix is saying “thank you” to its top feed distributors. Every Wednesday from February 5th to March 11th, excluding Ash Wednesday, the Nutramix team will travel to its five sales regions to host their annual Customer Appreciation Days, NutraDays.

Each farm store across the island works throughout the year to snatch the top crown or hold their bragging rights. So, after one year of friendly competition, they anticipate the results and the celebration at their door steps.

The concept of NutraDays was started by Newport Mills Limited as a way to truly thank its loyal and top customers over the years. Based on a customer’s feed sales, the top customer in each region is nominated and congratulated with a Customer Appreciation Day at their location.

The celebration has already begun, as two farm stores have already been congratulated. Agriculture Hub in Port Maria, officially opened

after the summer last year, and has already earned the winning title in St. Mary. Second is Mundell Farm Store in Linstead, St Catherine, taking the top spot from the 2019 NutraDay winner Kitchen & Farm. Michael Mundell and his team at Mundell Farm Store now deservingly hold the bragging rights for his region. In true Nutramix style, the entire team rolled out, along with a set of Golden Wheels serving the bigga-betta-badda sausage, DJ Ice on the “1s and 2s” and Gairy Bowes cheffing up a home-cooked meal for the stores. Our in-house Emcee, Nutramix’s Danree Delancy kept the vibes high and the crowd entertained. To top off the excitement, each Nutramix sales representative presented the 1st Place award to the store owners and their teams. But, we’re not done yet! Two down and three more to go. Follow the excitement on Instagram or Facebook @farmnutramix.

Lots of talent was showcased at the function, but it was “Copperwood Ballerina who earned the prize for the most talented. Questions were thrown out for members to obtain additional prizes, however, most open-ended employees were not eligible to participate, and as such they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Copperwood Ballerina and the fantastic 6 doing their performance.

The event was fully supported by our shared services. Special thanks to Stephanie, Joseph, Brian, Carol, Jessica, Alicia G, Latoya and Mr. Nembhard for their support.

Impromptu Awards: Rodney Watson was awarded the smartest worker as he guessed that Mr. Reid was voted the Administration Team Member of the year and Roberto Jones the Best Truck Washer. 9

Ahoy! Newport Mills Sets Sail! There was much excitement and anticipation leading up to the NPM Christmas Luau on the Seas and, we were NOT disappointed! Newport Mills team members partied all evening in fine style aboard the Caribbean Queen in celebration of another successful year! Before boarding, all patrons were welcomed with a glass of rum punch and outfitted with colourful leis and grass skirts in keeping with the Hawaiian theme. Once all aboard, we set sail on a slow scenic sunset cruise of the Kingston Harbour, to Port Royal and back again. The vibes – and drinks – flowed all evening thanks to the impressive buffet, awesome music compliments of DJ Jiggy and our signature blue and yellow Nutramix shots. 10

Newport Mills would like to thank all of our team members for their dedication throughout the year and for an epic night to remember! Looking forward to next year’s party!

E gg F arm Production Process & Christmas Lyme New Tunnel House Progress Previously, we grew about 13,000 birds and have since been able to increase the population to 16,500 - an overall 4% increase. We believe that figure will only get better. Stay tuned and look out for further developments as we will be undertaking upgrades to our buildings in the near future.

In our last feature, we unveiled photos of the development of our tunnel ventilated building. Now, we are pleased to update our CBG family as performance has significantly improved. Since then, our birds have been doing tremendously well under the ventilated conditions and we have seen significant improvement in our overall production and the health of the birds.

Christmas Lyme

Hubert (Tony) Blair (l), Head-Live Production, Poultry, awards Kemar Brown, Production Worker, with a gift basket in recognition of his outstanding character.

To ring in the new season, the Egg Farm, in collaboration with the St. Ann’s Bay Agency, held their Christmas Party on December 21 at Columbus Inn in Priory. All the elements for a momentous occasion were present, from the festive music to a feast for all to partake in, which consisted of an sumptuous menu of manish water, curry goat, fried chicken, fish and of course Caribbean Passion ham, perfectly paired with pasta, gungo peas and sorrel. The venue proved to be an ideal location, and will certainly be used in the future to continue bringing the team together for building team spirit and comrade. 13

Team

L-R: Kirk Bennett, Lawson Dennis, Dowen Ebanks, Anthony Chin, Christopher Harriott, Jerome Peart, Christopher Coombs, Christopher Mcfarlane, Daniel Gordon (stooping)

The team responsible for installing almost 1,000 feet of chain on the Kill Line in the processing plant - a 4 day job completed in half the time. The Kill Line is essential to the operations of the processing plant. It is an overhead conveyor from which 1,400 shackles are suspended. Live birds are hung by their feet in these shackles and conveyed via the Kill Line through the various processes at the end of which, the dead birds are removed and the empty line returns to begin the process again. The team was determined to have the plant up and running with minimum down-time and was able to complete the entire installation and testing before the start of the work week; even allowing for more than expected birds to be processed. Thank you for a job well done!

The quote “It is in giving that you receive!”, spans from the many benefits that volunteering can bring, from making a positive impact in the lives of others, learning new skills and making new friends to increasing your overall feelings of happiness. This now rings true for you in G.E.M Reward, which is a part of the Talent Development Rewards and Recognition Programme, where you can be rewarded for “Going the Extra Mile”. Within the heart of CB’s core values for making a difference in Jamaica and putting people first, there are many opportunities that you can take advantage of to not only give of your time, but also of your heart throughout the year. From events such as PAN, Jamaica Food & Drink Festival and Nutramix Domino Tournament, to Labour Day projects, Beach Clean Ups, and Christmas Treats, you can get involved as often as you wish and add to your miles.

Click Update Birthday Gift Option

Go to the Birthday Options table

Choose your Gift!

For 2020 and beyond, we’ll need birthday requests at least 2 months ahead of your birthday to help us manage the process. For example: Birthday in May? Enter by March…or you can just Log into BambooHR and select now! Persons who have no access to BambooHR simply speak with your Manager, Supervisor or your P & C Contact about the gift options and share your request. If you don’t select your gift at least 2 months in advance, we will go ahead and select one for you. Our automated process will help us to consistently: We will also send reminders to keep you on your toes. The first quarter of the year will be used as a test run, so please share your comments on the process and let us know if there are improvements (or not).

At the most basic level, everyone needs food and water. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates we will need 70% more food by 2050 but climate change is making agricultural land unproductive, while the UN estimates that soil erosion, unless unchecked, means we have less than 60 harvests left.

Population & the Environmental Crises The issue: Our population has become so large that the Earth cannot cope. There are now more than 7,700,000,000 people on planet Earth. It took until the early 1800s for the world population to reach one billion. Now we add a billion every 12-15 years.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MITS) has calculated that by 2050, 5 billion people will live in “water-stressed” regions - meaning that they cannot rely on their water supplies to meet their needs. The landmark 2019 EAT-Lancet Commission shared that with radical changes to food production and consumption, providing enough nutrition for everyone is possible. However, it also concluded that even these profound changes are unlikely to make it possible to feed everyone in just a generation or two from now if current population projections come true. Current Population Projections: United Nations’ global population is expected to exceed 11 billion people by 2100 unless actions are taken to stabilise population growth. Healthy diets from sustainable food systems are possible for up to 10 billion people but becomes increasingly unlikely past this population threshold.”

to consume more, as they move out of poverty. In many cases, these people are in countries with high birth rates.

Mythbusters by “Population Matters Org”: There are many misconceptions about population - what the numbers say, what the impact is on climate change and what population campaigners want to do about it. Some of the most common are: 1. “Population is going to stop growing soon anyway.” Not unless we do something about it. Even at the lowest end of the 95% certainty projection, population doesn’t hit maximum until near the end of the century - at nearly 10 billion people. We can make that figure lower and bring about the end of growth sooner - but only if we take the action needed, now. 2. “Having a smaller family won’t make any difference.” Choosing to have smaller families (one, two or even no children) is how some scientists believe that we can end population growth and ultimately achieve a sustainable population. The UN calculates that if, on average, every other family had just one fewer child than predicted, there would be 1 billion fewer people by 2050 and our population would be lower than it is today by 2100.

4. “Technological innovation will save us.” Many assume that technological progress will allow us to feed the world sustainably and to stop depleting natural resources, despite our increasing numbers. However, even technology does not enable limitless growth on a finite planet. As people escape poverty, their consumption increases. In Asia for example, meat and seafood consumption is expected to rise by 78% by 2050, due to increasing wealth and population growth. We cannot expect food and agricultural technology to rapidly meet this exploding demand with a fully sustainable alternative.

3. “Environmental damage is about consumption, not population” It is about both. While it is clear that we need to change our consumption habits, adding more consumers only exacerbates every problem arising from it. The reality is that hundreds of millions of people have an absolute right 21
