welcome There are times in our lives when we face great challenges. Times when we are so frantic with worry, we panic and stop thinking rationally.

Since the announcement, on March 10th, of the first confirmed case of the Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, in Jamaica, a number of persons have become so frantic with worry they have stopped thinking sensibly. My advice, “STOP! Breathe deeply, calm yourselves. Do not allow fear to rule your actions; because, in the midst of all the uncertainty, life continues”. By the time you receive this issue of Chat Bout, our 2021 Financial Year will have started. Cut-backs, shortages, delays, increased costs and reduced revenues are just some of the challenges we already face. With such a rocky start, it would be easy to slip into panic mode and make rash decisions. The Owners and Executives of the CB Group do not however have this luxury. So, while it is difficult to predict the full impact that COVID-19 will have on the market, construction of our new processing plant must continue. We also continue to move forward with plans for the second phase of our Strategic Plan. Notwithstanding the postponement of the launch, I have no doubt as soon as it is advisable we will unveil this very exciting phase in our Group’s history. With the help of each and every one of you, we have kept our day-to-day operations up and running. Whereas it is not business as usual there are some opportunities we can take away – virtual meetings, working from home and flexi hours. How about making these the norm instead of the exception? Life continues and we must be ready to seek out and capitalize on opportunities.

1

At the heart of everything that’s happening, the CB Group remains committed to the health and wellness of its employees and all other stakeholders. We encourage you to visit the Ministry of Health & Wellness and the World Health Organization websites to stay informed on how best to protect yourselves and your families. There will be a calm after the storm. In the meantime; stay informed, keep safe and think practical. Mr. H.

On April 29th, CB Group, in partnership with Spur Tree, hosted a Farmers’ Market at the Factories Corporation of Jamaica (FAJ) to assist local farmers sell excess crops. You’d have read in your last ChatBout issue that CBG is an active Partner of the Say Yes to Fresh initiative created to grow public awareness about the urgent need to consume local fresh foods. Before the novel coronavirus entered our shores, many local farmers had pride themselves on supplying our hotels, restaurants and families with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Farmer

Pop Up

With the implementation of travel restrictions, social distancing and other safety measures, many of these businesses have closed their doors, leaving farmers with significant amounts of excess produce and now in search of other markets.

Market

So, in a small effort, farmers from St Catherine, St Thomas and Kingston were called upon. They journeyed to 2

FAJ on Marcus Garvey Drive, where staff from several organizations were rallied up to come out and support. The farmers carried with them fresh onions, escallions, thyme, yams and bright red tomatoes, sweet peppers and strawberries. Over one hundred employees from Cal’s Manufacturing, Spur Tree and others happily embraced the opportunity to shop with convenience.

Big up to the Marketing team who led the initiative and a special thank you to the staff at the Factories Corporation of Jamaica property for coming out and supporting the farmers.

CB Foods was also on site selling chicken, eggs, Bad Dawg and Caribbean Passion products. All participating farmers were left with empty stalls, selling about 600 pounds of fresh produces. Remember, continue to support our local farmers and #SayYesToFresh. Join the movement @SayYestoFreshJA. 3

All New Products that Support Our Local Farmers Local farmers across the board have taken a hit. More than 60% of the pork that our Jamaican farmers produce is for the tourism industry. With the shutdown taking place due to COVID-19 and an excess of pork from farmers, CBG along with other local processors have lobbied for the banning of pork imports. In our commitment to our farmers, we have introduced 5 new products that are of course made with 100% local pork.

SALTED PORK BELLY Did you know that 99% of the Pigs Tail consumed in Jamaica is imported? Why buy imports when there is home grown locally produced meats? We dare you to substitute imported Pigs Tail with our new Salted Pork Belly.

ECONO PACKS And we have new line of Econo Packs – conveniently packaged in 2.5kg (or 5.5lb) parcels. You our CBG Family would have first been introduced to the 4 SKUs through our Staff Sales Programme. We’ve now extended the offer to our customers. There’s less hassle for them when purchasing bulk and having to repackage into smaller 5lb parcels that their customers often prefer.

And, there’re 60% less nitrites so it’s USFDA approved!

Pork Hock

Loin Chops

Pork Stew

Pork Trotters

Help us spread the word! More than ever our local farmers need and the pork industry needs our support. Choose local foods over imported. Every choice #MakesADifference, so why not #BuyWithPurpose?

M ills Market Days Newport Mills experienced Market Day on April 16th. The vendors were on time and all were outfitted in their masks. To facilitate the ease and speed of shopping, items were pre-packaged in 1lb and 2lbs portions. Our NPM staff members were excited and grateful that they were given the opportunity to shop while at work. With Market Day being brought to the facility workers, especially those living in the St. Catherine area; they were able to concentrate on their work without worrying about getting home to shop before the curfew. Despite eagerness to shop, social distancing was observed and maintained throughout the day. Feedback was that the produce was fresh and the operations went smoothly.

Market Day at

odles

When we were made aware of the initiative of having a Market Day being implemented as the country is going through this pandemic, the team thought it was a great idea and even said that they appreciated that the management looking out for them in such a fashion. This being a first though, it was received with a lot of skepticism initially as persons wondered about the quality of the produce that would be supplied as they were accustomed to sourcing their own and had their particular standard in mind. When the vendors from FB Farms arrived however, they were pleasantly surprised of the variety and quality of the food on offer and also the prices. The vendor and assistants were very courteous and pleasant to deal with. This effort has helped persons at the location tremendously and we are beyond grateful. When the team understood the benefits to be had of shopping in comfort and safety, they gladly prepared themselves and came shopping for even neighbors and other members of their family. We definitely look forward to having more of this of course! You could not give us a taste of something this good and not expect us to want more, NPG is looking for this to happen every fortnightly/monthly. NPG says thank you co-operate CB Group for thinking of us in a BIG way!

Market and Ice Cream Day at Freetown With social distancing being at the forefront of everyone’s mind and Market Day being a new experience, some of our Freetown family shared their highlights about the day and the impact that this has had on their lives. What were your first thoughts when you heard about this initiative? Awesome! We don’t have to go and mingle in the crowded markets. How has it been received by the team members? The location was welcoming to the opportunity, especially the Cold Room team as they looked forward to the fresh fruits. How has this initiative helped your location? Shopping during work hours has helped us to recuperate and have more time to relax during our off work times. Feedback and about the produce and variety We look forward to Market Day not only because of the convenience, but also because the vendor is accommodating and willing to source produce for us if he doesn’t have it at the time. Ice Cream Friday at Freetown. Team members at the location were provided with a sweet treat which definitely lifted spirits and reignited a spirit of joy. Bet you’ll want to go grab a scoop for yourself! 12

CB Foods Does Community Sales to Support Customers and Vendors

Lots of changes have been implemented by the Government to manage the COVID-19 outbreak. The island-wide curfew and the lockdown of St. Catherine in April with designated days and times to move around and shop led to overwhelming rushes at our retail customers. To help alleviate/ ease our customers, reduce the state of panic and help to provide convenient shopping to some of our corporate customers, the CB Foods’ Sales, Distribution and Marketing teams collaborated to provide safe Community Sales. Why not bring the food to the consumers in their communities so long as we did not violate our retail and wholesale customers? Vending opportunities have been shared with long-time supplier, Barcode, who like many businesses are faced with the economic hardship of COVID-19. They would purchase goods on consignment and sell as a third party contractor. At times, CB trucks were also dispatched to various communities.

Courtleigh On April 8th and 24th, CB Foods extended its Staff Sales programme to the Courtleigh and Pegasus hotels. The days begun at 1pm with scores of staff already waiting, in accordance with the social distance protocol. Over 200 workers had expressed their gratitude with one customer even making a thank-you speech! The success of the first staging led to a request, where those who missed the previous pop-up was able to stock up.

Plenty “Big Up CB!”’s were heard at the various stops. Check out how some of them have went: 18

National Hot and humid was April 24th! But truly, it was much more than that. At the National Baking Company on Half Way Tree Road, many early birds eagerly awaited the truck’s arrival and by 1pm all goods were sold. Gratitude was felt all around as staff were happy to avoid supermarkets and wholesales, especially those essential workers living in St Catherine. Unions Estate On April 22nd, CB Foods products were made available to the residents of Unions Estate, Twickenham Park Spanish Town at their

community centre who were then experiencing the lockdown. As the truck approached, lines were formed quickly with social distance being observed, persons wearing masks and with their shopping bags. Residents expressed their appreciation for the convenience and the variety of products offered. Grace Kennedy On May 1st, a contracted driver made way to the Grace Kennedy distribution centre in Spanish Town. With chicken and eggs being sold, their staff saw it as a great opportunity to have goods brought to them hassle-free and at an affordable price. Thanks to all those CBG staff who have been a part of these initiatives! 19

COVID-19 Prevent the Spread Be A Part of the Solution With the steady increase of persons being infected with COVID, it is now mandatory for all persons to wear mask. Initially it was only mandatory for persons who had symptoms or were infected. However, with a better understanding of the virus and the discovery that persons could spread the virus and not even be sick, this measure was now extended to the entire population. Here’s a few steps to create one for yourself with only 3 simple items. No sewing required!

Materials needed – Bandana, 2 Hair Bands

Fold your bandana in three.

20

CB eZine

F i D i P eop l e

M ay

And remember, wash your mask after each use. There are many measures that we can all put in place to be a part of the solution, to not only protect ourselves, but also our co-workers, family members and fellow citizens. Here are some reminders of practices you can implement:

Place the hair bands at both ends; they should be about 6 inches apart.

1. Be Aware – Know how the virus spreads so that you can know how to protect yourself. 2. Wash Your Hands and Sanitize Often – Keep your hands clean as this will help prevent the spread of germs to you and others. 3. Avoid Close Contact – Maintain the distance measure of 6 feet between yourself and others

Fold each end of the fabric in towards the center and tuck them into each other.

4. Clean Your Surroundings – Any surfaces that are frequently touched should be disinfected often. 5. Stay at Home – As much as possible limit going out to only the necessities of life, such as going to the supermarket and pharmacy.

To put on the mask, loop the hair bands over your ears. Adjust the mask to make sure it covers your nose and mouth completely.
