welcome I want to thank everyone for all their efforts throughout the year and in particular during this challenging period of Covid-19, where your commitment and bravery have been tested like never before. The continued success of our company is built on the efforts of all of us, and we must strive to find new ways to navigate this period of uncertainty. Our success as an organization will depend upon us adjusting our mindset and understanding that, sales, accountability, and security are everyone’s responsibility. Sales - We need everyone’s creativity and ingenuity. Accountability - This is not accounting, but about each person’s work ethic and personal responsibility for his or her tasks. Security is our future. Without securing our present, there will be no tomorrow. While we have seen many challenges due to Covid -19, I believe that we will come out of this period a stronger company. Our live production department did not ease up and have continued the construction of state of the art solidside wall buildings, which will positively affect our production costs, while at the same time ensuring that we have enough broiler birds to supply our new processing plant. Let us all continue to push forward in optimizing our areas of operation knowing that we have the noble task of feeding a nation. We offer our best wishes and happiness to you and your families, as we all look forward to the future with optimism and hope.

Then, packages of chicken and pork were handed over to healthcare workers at Cornwall Regional Hospital before going to the St James Waste Management with hot meals.

Savanna La Mar Hospital & Westmoreland Waste Management On June 26th the team went to Sav-La-Mar Hospital with packages for 800 meals for staff, then to the Sav Waste Management office with homegrown foods.

Waste Management Lucea Last but not least, staff at Copperwood Farms distributed meals to drivers and yard and maintenance workers at Hanover’s Waste Management. All around, sentiments of appreciation were shared with our team for the mere thought and time taken to personally pay the locations a visit, as they felt forgotten in the midst of COVID-19.

Thank You to our Volunteers

A BIG THANK YOU to our volunteers who took the time to travel with the Marketing team to Feed the Frontline workers all across Jamaica. It’s safe to say that those early morning trips were worth it! There was an overwhelming number of CBG staff who wanted to help Make a Difference in this project. For those who couldn’t join us on the road but helped with placing orders, packing gift bags and writing ThankYou cards, your support was felt and truly appreciated. Big up to the Sales Reps, Security team, our truck driver Marlon Samuels and his assistant Kevron Reid who were integral in the journey. Let’s continue to Make a Difference.

Young

Chefs Summer Camp

As we all adjust to the new norm, Young Chefs JA made the decision to continue its annual summer camp as of July 13. With parents’ support, head of Young Chefs, Latoya Panton reduced the class allotment for children by half for safety precautions. With smaller class sizes of only about 3-6 kids, both the Beginners and the Advanced groups were able to enjoy their respective times in the kitchen, as they started the week off by whipping up breakfast recipes using our Omega 3 enriched #SmartEggs. #SmartParents, how are you keeping the kids entertained this summer? We recommend some quality time in the kitchen on weekends.

Check out our easy kiddie-friendly Simple Pizza Egg Melts recipe in the Recipe Corner. Feel free to share photos of your children trying their hand with Smart Eggs in the kitchen in the #SLACK ChatBout channel for a chance for it to be featured in the next ChatBout. 6

Located in the cool hills of Ramble, Hanover, Edward’s Dairy, partner of the Drink Real Milk campaign produces one of the sweetest and freshest cow’s milk in Jamaica. The uniqueness of the ‘Dairy Fresh’ milk makes it a preferred choice for chefs and families along the north-west, as well as for hotels and other tourist attractions in St Ann, St James and Westmoreland. Locals and tourists have both come to love the product. Owner Samuel Edwards and his two sons, Marlon and Sheldon, have kept their operations model simple throughout the years, with the freshness and quality of their milk representing their passion for making drinking milk a truly enjoyable experience.

Support ‘Dairy Fresh’

Business was good for the Edwards family until COVID-19 entered our shores. Like many businesses, Edward’s Dairy encountered a major blow to their production, as well as to the health of their herd. Without tourists and locals enjoying our restaurants, hotels and other foodrelated attractions and beaches, and with cows that were still producing every day, the farm had tonnes of fresh milk with a dwindled market. The family was fearful that time would repeat itself; back in the eighties, dairy farmers across the island were forced to dispose their quality fresh milk because of the introduction of cheap imported powdered milk. Fortunately, good reviews about their milk have reached many corners of the island, including Kingston and St Andrew. Now, the family has increased its supply to supermarkets in the corporate area; stores include Lee’s Food Fair, Progressive Foods Supermarkets, Shoppers Fair stores and Loshusan. Now, more persons can enjoy the sweet, fresh taste of ‘Dairy Fresh’ - 100% real cow’s milk. Next time you visit the supermarket, look out for ‘Dairy Fresh’ in the refrigerated section and continue to support our local farmers.

One on One with Dr. Roxann Hayles

We welcome one of the newest additions to the CBG family, Dr. Roxann Hayles, Veterinarian, who recently started her journey at the Field Office. ChatBout had a quick one-on-one with Dr. Hayles to get to know her a little bit more and to also hear about her journey with CBG thus far. When did you realize that you wanted to become a veterinarian? My lifelong goal has always been to be a veterinarian and when I started UWI St. Augustine, I realized I wanted to be a poultry vet in particular. I grew up with my grandmother and that’s where my love for poultry really started. There were moments where lack of support, lack of funds and doubts made it at times seem like an impossible vision, but passion and persistence made this childhood goal possible. Tell us a little about your how you felt during your first week and how you’re feeling now. March 2, 2020 was the date I started here at CB Group. I felt a wide array of emotions - electrified, overjoyed and a little bit nervous all throughout that first week. It has been a wonderful period so far, in general. I know there will be ups and down, happy days and unfortunately some sad days, but I will definitely be giving it my all and enjoying this new journey! What aspect of your new role excites you the most? The baby chicks of course! They are just a fluff ball of cuteness. Growing up, my grandmother reared chickens (layers) and they bring back a sense of nostalgia. What do you enjoy the most about working at your location? There are so many things, so I can’t say it’s only one thing because they all work in tandem. I enjoy working with chickens… they are my babies. But just listening to the farm attendants and the farm owners can make my day. They have very interesting stories! What difference would you like to make there? Honestly, this is a very hard question because entering the company one week before the first case of COVID-19 in Jamaica, it has not been business as usual. I have to say the grace with which the company has managed to operate through such an unprecedented time is just admirable. I am sure as time progresses I will be able to say exactly the difference I will make; whatever it is though I know it will be impactful. How would you describe the vibe of your new team? There is this marvelous sense of balance between working and a light-hearted environment. Generally, the atmosphere is very comfortable but at the same time it’s still 100% being serious about work. That I have to say is refreshing. They are accommodating. Being the newest member on the team, they have all been very supportive all throughout. Thanks Field Team!!! What are the values that drive you? Dependability, honesty, passion, drive.

8

How would your family and friends describe you? Extremely reliable. All you need to do is ask and if I am able to do what you requested, you will get what you asked for and more. Miserable, sad to say, but I have heard it many times. I am just a very focused person and when someone tries to distract me, I can be rather vocal. After I have completed my task however, I will bring a cupcake or chocolate. The peacemaker, I hate animosity or anything that will create an uncomfortable environment, as such I tend to always try to mediate problems, which by the way 98% of the time is due to miscommunication or misunderstanding. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Travelling, DIY, hiking and sleeping. Tell us three things about yourself that you’d love for your new team to know. āā I am very passionate. āā I am almost always jovial, and hey, a smile is contagious āā I believe in balance and a time and place for everything. As such once it’s time to be serious that smile disappears very fast.

What are the values that drive you? Love: When you value love deeply and try to show it in everything that you do, you make your world and the world of others a much better place. Love also helps to build intimate and deep relationships with the people you see every day. Balance: There are going to be times when you need to sprint in life, and other times when you are going to need to slow down. Peace: this is the one am working on now. This takes practice to 10

make it perfect, however it enables clear decision-making, freedom in thoughts and actions as well as providing a deep understanding of the special life that you live. Its rewards are boundless with both the journey and destination full of rewards. Understanding: Understanding comes from a place of acceptance of what is not what should be or could be. It is the ability to recognize someone else’s viewpoint without trying to change it. It is learning that it is useless to fight against the way the world is and other people are, and to learn to dance with them instead.

Agro-Industry What is ‘Sustainable Agriculture’?

As young children we’ve been fed a certain image of what a farm looks like, with chickens roaming around and cows munching out in green fields, and happily feeding grains to goats. The truth is, this isn’t the case majority of the time. The uncomfortable truth is that with global food production increasing and consumption sky high, particularly in wealthy countries, ‘intensive’ farming in both crops and meats has created significant pollution, dangerous greenhouse gases, deforestation, soil degradation and climate change. For instance, the erosion of topsoil is one result of unsustainable agriculture, and this crucial part of the earth is set to disappear in under a century. Of the topsoil left, nearly all of it is polluted, devoid of nutrients. In short, this type of farming is not sustainable

In such a quickly changing world, can anything be sustainable? What do we want to sustain? How can we implement such a vague goal?

The word sustain means to keep in existence or maintain and implies long-term support or permanence. As it pertains to agriculture, sustainable describes farming systems that are capable of maintaining their productivity and usefulness to society indefinitely. Such systems must be resourceconserving, socially supportive, commercially competitive, and environmentally sound. So why sustainable? The sustainable model seeks to: āā Produce sufficient human food, feed, fiber, and fuel to meet the needs of rising population āā Make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls āā Sustain the economic viability of agriculture systems āā Increase profitable farm income

20

āā Improve production efficiency and productivity āā Enhance the quality of life for farm families and communities As a consumer, why should you care? No matter how good your intentions are, it can be difficult to fork out extra cash for what seems to be identical produce if you can’t see a direct benefit. But there are plenty of reasons why you should care about sustainable agriculture. It also: āā prioritizes soil health and pest control with low environmental impact āā improves the quality of surface water and groundwater resources āā supports research and education intended to help farmers mitigate and adapt to climate change āā focuses on planting crops in harmony with the environment and letting them grow as they should in the right conditions, bringing flavour back to where it should be And while it seeks to reduce food miles, there are plenty of countries which simply lack the climatic conditions to grow in-demand crops. So one producer may have to send their crops overseas where demand is great. But sustainability isn’t an all or nothing approach. Just because you’re buying grapes from abroad, doesn’t mean there’s no point in getting 90% of your vegetables from a farmer or local market down the road. The same goes for sustainable agriculture. Many farms are working to become increasingly sustainable, one method at a time. By supporting farmers and suppliers who are pursuing sustainable methods, we can all be part of this movement towards greater sustainability and minimal environmental impact.
