Welcome C
hicken, pork, eggs, what’s next? Welcome to the latest edition of Chat Bout.
The CB Group has been having a great year so far and with all the exciting things happening, I could hardly wait to discover what new surprise was in store. Well, the secret is out! Beef! CBG officially launched its first BEEF line, Bonafide Burgers, with a public tasting last month end at the Jamaica Observer Food Awards. A bold move indeed! It was just a few months ago at the Farmers’ Expo that I pointed out how far the CB Group has come from being a mere poultry producer to becoming a unifying force in the Jamaican agriculture industry. I said our involvement in chicken, pork, eggs and other major species, cash crops and cotton was not by accident. It was a deliberate attempt to help bring about structure in these Jamaican industries and entrepreneurship pride to Jamaicans. The CB Group is here to push for more local production, to help more Jamaicans get involved in agriculture in a serious way, to create jobs and to grow our economy. We are here to stay. We are here to make a difference for Jamaica. On a more sombre note, our prayers go out to everyone who suffered as a result of the recent rains. Many lost crops, animals and personal possessions; communities were cut-off by flood waters and overall, the country lost many productive hours. We are thankful however that there were no reports of loss of life. This is just one reminder of how fragile we are in the grand scheme of things and how important it is for us to give thanks each and every day; for life and for the many blessings we enjoy. Never take things for granted. Be grateful for life, for health and strength and as Rev. Al Miller says, “Live better, live love”. Mr. H.

Observer Food Awards 2017
In its 19th annual staging, it was a fabulous foodie night on the lawns of Devon House where Jamaica’s top culinary industry players brought their best foot, or shall we say, best food forward! At the Observer Food Awards on May 25th, CB Foods used the much anticipated food event as a platform to present our latest products – Happy Foods soups and Bonafide Burgers. Though our soups did not win the ‘Best New Product’, we salute the winners. The night was the perfect setting to introduce our first beef line to the public – an audience filled with media, corporate partners, hoteliers, restaurateurs, caterers, chefs, F&B managers, bloggers, foodie friends and even our competitors! 4
Chef Celeste Gordon who won Best Caterer for 2017 grilled our Straight Beef and our Spicy Scotch Bonnet burger patties to melt-in-your-mouth perfection and a wide range of tasty toppings were available for patrons to pick, chose and refuse. The burgers were an absolute hit!

Team ‘Pretty Science’ wins Smart Egg Drop Competition
I
t was a full auditorium of #SmartKids, parents, and volunteers at Campion
College on May 27th. Though 11 teams registered, 9 teams of two from Immaculate Conception Prep, Liberty Academy, Sts Peter & Paul Prep, Queen’s and Half Way Tree Primary turned out with their egg-sciting contraptions built to keep their uncooked Smart Egg intact when free-falling from varying heights – 6,9,15 and 20ft!
6
With each round, there were teams that got knocked out, but in the end, 4 teams survived the 20ft drop but with the judging also based on creativity, design and other factors, and it was team ‘Pretty Science’ that took home the winning trophy, Amazon gift cards, 6-months worth of Smart Eggs and a National Bakery basket full of goodies. All day there were egg experiments and Young Chefs who turned out to do live cooking demos, and host TerriKarelle kept the children engaged with tons of games and Q&A segments. It was a successful morning of science and fun!

E&G Feed City, the Champion of Nutradays It’s been a busy past couple of months for the-BIG-feed with customer stops across the island. May 3rd marked the last stop of the Nutramix tour at E&G Feed City in Palmers Cross, Clarendon, who for the 3rd year in a row walked away with the Grand Champion title as our top selling feed store in the island! As a loyal customer and a true ambassador for Nutramix, we say a big congrats to Errol Smith and Georgia Sterling of E&G! There was an outside broadcast with Irie, as well as give-a-ways of Nutramix feed, baby chicks and promotional items. Also present at all the Nutradays stops was our Golden Wheels which served up the baddest sausage at all the Nutradays stops, so big up Bad Dawg.

hosts Dairy Seminar in St Thomas With the renewed Drink Real Milk campaign launching this month, CB Group is committed to reviving the local dairy industry. The-BIG-feed headed to Serge Island Dairies’ St Thomas-located property on May 9th where it hosted its Dairy Seminar. Approximately 50 farmers and other interested persons were in attendance to learn more about the dairy industry. It was a fun and educational day with the Nutramix livestock team speaking on best practices such as nutrition and care for animals as well as on services like artificial insemination. The farmers were also introduced to new milking machines valued at approximately $500,000. Nutramix will offer these machines to interested small farmers via a manageable 24 month financing plan. The milking machines will add great value to farmers who are currently hand milking by improving efficiency, milking times and sanitation, thus resulting in better quality milk and increased earnings for farmers. Is baaaaaccck! It’s 2017 and our 2nd annual staging of the Nutramix Double Six Championship is back in full force! June 2nd was the launch of the competition at the Melbourne Cricket Club with an internal domino competition with folks from Newport Mills. Production and sales turned out to drop a six! Trophies and prizes were won but you have to stay tuned to #Slack and your July ChatBout to find out who won! The Regionals kick off on June 24 and the competition will be hosted again by emcee Dufton “Duffy” Shepherd. Regional winners will win $50,000 and lots of other prizes, and the Grand Champions will take home $250,000 cash, 500 baby chicks and 1 tonne of Nutramix feed! We hope to make this year even more exciting and meaningful for our Nutramix community, so please help us to spread the word.
May ChatBout Correction: The-BIG-feed gets NEW exclusive store! In May’s ChatBout, page 12 incorrectly speaks to the-BIG-feed landing its first exclusive store. The article ought to have said: Nutramix has landed a new exclusive store! With Premium harvest already exclusively carrying Nutramix, we celebrate the opening of another store in an all-new location - St Ann’s Bay.

Creating Bonds
in Our Communities
Nutramix @ Jamaica Pig Farmers Association Ball The annual JPFA Ball was held on April 29 at the Jamaica Pegasus. Dr Amiel gave the greetings to the room on behalf of CB Group and had the audience rolling in laughter at his candidness and whit. Those present who represented Nutramix ate with customers, suppliers and friends. There was a even pork bar with 7 different types of pork dishes! Talk about indulging! The NPM table was especially lucky, with Nutramix Sales Rep Fitzgerald Keyes winning the gate prize of the night which was a weekend for 2 at a fun resort on the North Coast. our community — pig farmers association ball

Last Christmas, we took a visit to the Dare to Care Home to give the kids a true Christmas teat. Last month on Labour Day, May 23, members of the CB Group went back, but this time around, it was to add vibrancy to their surroundings by planning fruit trees! Inspired by the Live Better campaign, there were a dozen different types of trees planted, including star fruit, guava, June plum, and Julie mango. This project will impact the lives of 241 children and 80 staff, so a very big THANK YOU to our Labour Day volunteers who were decked out in their red gears to dig away and plant their trees.

our community — fun day in d-bay
As we are rapidly expanding our brands and products, we’ve set new targets for 2017. In living better, we strive to work smarter, as a collective, rather than as individual teams. So Sales & Distribution took the initiative to plan a Retreat day at Sun-Kissed Villa in Discovery Bay on April 29th. S&D, Customer Care and Marketing all committed to reaching our targets for all CB Foods brands and competitive spirits were high for games, incentives and winning. So, teams of 5-6 persons got together and had 30 minutes to cook up our all-new brand… BONAFIDE BURGERS! With Bonafide Burger patties and ingredients placed on a platform in the middle of the pool, each team had to swim, run and get their grills flaming to serve up the besttasting STRAIGHT BEEF and SPICY SCOTCH BONNET BEEF burgers to wow the judges. Congrats to the winning team who made a scrumptious caramel glazed burger! Each member walked away with their very own iHome! Big congrats to Customer Care rep Jason Clarke and Sales rep Admarian Davis-Myers who won Best Sales Team! They were each gifted with a weekend for 2 get-away at Moon Palace for their hard work.

Tips:
For a clean land
Did you know that 1 of the 4 major principles on which our LIVE BETTER movement was founded is:
Protecting the environment What does a better environment mean to you?
ƝƝ On the road but have something to dispose of? Keep it in your bag until you find a garbage bin.
Cleaner water to drink….. less spending on purified water? Fresher air….. fewer pollutants that trigger asthma symptoms?
ƝƝ “It’s biodegradable so it’s fine to throw out the car window, right?” Wrong! Biodegradable items also overbear our landfills, our roads, rivers and drains. Learn how to make a compost at home for your biodegradable waste - www.homecompostingmadeeasy.com.
Less garbage blocking our drains….. less flooding when it rains?
ƝƝ Buy less of items like lawn chemicals, pesticides, paints and other hazardous materials so you won’t have leftovers to dispose of.
Sure! The list is endless… In the light of flooding in many communities last month caused mainly by poor and blocked drainage, let’s look at how we can play a small part in the bigger picture for a clean land: ƝƝ Recycle waste products like glass, plastics, aluminium and paper. Visit www.jamaicarecycles.com to learn more. ƝƝ In many countries, it’s good practice to take a reusable canvas shopping bag to the supermarket to save on using plastic bags.
ƝƝ Use rechargeable batteries. Lots of batteries contain metals that are better kept out of landfills. ƝƝ Give it away, don’t throw it away. Donate unwanted clothing and used household items to your church, children’s homes or charities. ƝƝ Don’t stay silent when you see persons discarding their waste on our roads or in our waters.
Did you know? These take this long to decompose: Paper: 2-3 weeks Plastic bag: 10-20 years Aluminium: 350 years Plastic soda bottle: 450 years
