did you know?
Wel
come
I think it would be fair to say we all have dreams of being successful at what we do, but unfortunately this usually only comes with hard work and for a few people, a lot of luck. The only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary. Over the past year our company set out on a “Live Better” campaign, which involved us participating in sessions about life plans. All very thought provoking, believe me! Jim Rohn once said, "If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much." So we’ve all got to think very carefully, plan our future as best we can and look at a path to success. Success does not mean never making mistakes but never making the same one a second time, and that I think, is what this company of ours has tried to do. We are now about to embark on a path to greater success, that many of us, especially the “older’ folks like myself, have dreamt about for years, culminating in the creation of “The Nest” and achieving more success than we have in recent years. As we move into this next phase, we should only think of success, achieving all the goals we set ourselves, which means fortunately or unfortunately, we will all need to be very successful at what we do. Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do, take risks, have a vision and work hard. Don't wish it were easier; wish you were better at the things you do and do them. "Success" is when you look back at your life, and the memories make you smile.
A Raymore
By the time you read this we will almost be at year’s end, so I will take the opportunity now to wish you all the very best for the coming holiday season and beyond. Continue to “Walk Good”, success will follow. welcome

Eric Beaver is the
Champion PAN Finals returned to the Half Way Tree Transport Centre, the home of that life-changing moment for 2016 winner Terry Ann Davidson. Sunday October 29th saw 28 PAN finalists turn out to prove their culinary skills behind the pan. Rain or shine, CB was successful in blocking off a segment of Half Way Tree Road which was lined with Bad Dawg Sausages, Homegrown corn, Happy Food soups, sponsor booths and a sea of patrons. Chicken was jerking, kids were playing at the Monster Milk Village and patrons were tuning in to the activities on stage led by Emcees Dufton ‘Duffy’ Sheperd and Khadine “Miss Kitty” Hylton. PA N Fi n a l s h a d a w i c k e d entertainment line-up with Chris Martin opening the performance segment, followed by crowd favourite Jeffrey Campbell better known as
Agent Sasco. Romaine Virgo gave a cameo appearance, performing alongside them both. There was a surprise guest artiste who had the crowd jumping into a frenzy, gospel artiste Kevin Downswell. Legendary reggae artiste Sizzla, known for his creative use of freedom of speech and speaking out against injustices, closed the show with some of his hits. By the end of night, our 5 expert judges named their top 3 favourite PAN chefs! Congratulations to Nicola Brown from Manchester who took 3rd place and Jaime Martin from Kingston, St Andrew who came in 2nd. But, it was Eric Beaver from St Ann who was crowded PAN 2017 CHAMPION!

sets the bar for
#JFDF2017 Successful were many a rain dance and ticket sales promotions that led to the sold-out 3rd annual staging of Pork Palooza! Copperwood Pork was certainly the star of the evening at a most beautifully decorated Palm Drive at Hope Zoo filled with 10 pork masters and Sponsors’ chefs. Patrons sampled exciting pork dishes from the best of the best including our very own Dominic Pearson along with Simon Levy cheffing up carnitas with fire roasted tomato salsa and smoked butterflied pork shoulder topped with cran apple slaw at the Copperwood Pork booth, and just when they thought they saw it all, the food fare fun kept on goin’! To end the night, the original winner, 2015’s Top Hog Dale Delisser reclaimed his title from last year’s crowd favourite Gariel Ferguson. The crowd couldn’t get enough of Dale’s crispy pork belly!

Oneka Morrison Final Year BSC. Nursing “Being a nursing student is not cheap and so it helps with financing my tuition, and hence it allows for a better budget plan. The CB Group UWI 5K is not just helping you, it can benefit a family member, it can benefit a friend and of course it gives great joy to know that you are helping in allowing someone to meet their dreams or their goals.”
Ferron Hartley 3rd Year Biochemistry “The CB Group UWI 5K has helped me a lot, particularly this semester where I was actually de-registered from my courses; however because of the UWI 5K scholarship grant I was able to cover my tuition for the first semester and as such I am now fully registered for all my courses. If we promote the run and the run gets bigger, it offers students like myself a larger platform from which we can support ourselves.”
Kevaughn Campbell Anatomy Student and Swimming Scholarship Recipient “I believe to get more students involved in the CB Group UWI 5K, is to raise the awareness because I don’t believe that a lot of students are aware of what the 5K is and what the funding goes towards.”

A day in the life of…
Dr. Sydonnie Gyles 1. How long have you worked with the CB Group? Since June 06, 2011; 6 and a half years. 2. How did you first get involved with CBG and how has your role changed over the years? I first came to CB as a veterinary intern and thought the operation was dynamic. I was employed as a Veterinarian for Caribbean Broilers Jamaica Limited and continue to function in this capacity. Exposure however, in my field has been phenomenal. Loving my Job! 3. What has been the most rewarding moment for you at CBG? To have participated in the certification of the contract and company owned farms in ISO, HACCP and GMP and to see the “Safe Food” and “Live Better” adverts all around the island! I also pride in checking on “my birds in the red bag” and “red-trayed” products in the supermarkets. 16

4. Being with CBG for so long, is there any monumental instances you wish to share with persons who have joined in recent years? The job is all consuming! During my first pregnancy I dreamt that after giving birth the nurse handed me my baby. While opening the receiver to see for the first time my newborn bundle of joy, I was surprised to find a big white 6 week old broiler bird snugly staring back at me. The farmers thought I should’ve bought cashpot! I’ve also been told that I talk about vaccine shipments in my sleep. 5. What is a typical day like for you at work? Days may vary as I visit the Field Office in Linstead, and have the responsibility to visit the broiler contract farms between Clarendon and St. Catherine, the Hatchery in Old Harbour, the Processing Plant in Kingston and the Egg Farm in St. Ann. I also visit the pullet farms for routine lab work. Typical day includes checks on the farms and quick runs to the lab (in Kingston). A Tuesday or Friday may see me at the hatchery observing baby chicks or taking blood samples. 6. What gets you through a hectic work day? NCU FM!!! The radio keeps my company while driving from location to location and I sing along with the songs that help me to destress and keep a positive attitude. 7. Which product is your favourite at CB? CB Breast Fillet 8. If you could switch departments for a day, where would you go and why? Nowhere! Field Team rocks!!!! 9. Any embarrassing moments at work? Because we work on the road, options for toilet facilities are often not as luxurious as those in our typical office spaces. I was driving to Acton Barrett’s farm in Clarendon and got stuck in some pouring rain. As the showers subsided and I restarted my journey I suddenly felt an overwhelming need to urinate. I was in the middle of nowhere and really need to go. So, I pulled over, exited the vehicle and thought I could pull a quick one to relieve myself. As I was about to assume the “relief position” I was pleasantly surprised by my favourite NPM bulk truck driver, Bulk 8, Mr. Powell, who knows my vehicle very well (at the time a white Rav 4) and was not shy in “hailing me up”. Not sure what happened but suddenly the urge to urinate disappeared. 10. If you could name only one dream that you have for CBG in the next 3 years, what would it be? That I will visit my neighbouring Caribbean islands and see my red-bagged and red-trayed products ISO, HACCP and GMP certified in the refrigerated isles of the supermarkets! our community — a day in the life of dr sydonnie gyles

Managers Retreat to #LiveBetter CB Group Managers headed to the Melia Braco Village in Montego Bay last month for the annual Managers Retreat. It wasn’t quite a period of strategizing and corporate planning. On the contrary, the retreat focused on the ‘self. Afterall, we are encouraging Jamaica to live better, but are we living better? Guest speaker Dr. Karen Carpenter delved into topics about balance, happiness, relationships, finance and health. CBG Managers left the retreat feeling renewed, emotive and driven to #LiveBetter. Check out the highlights.

6th Annual CB Group UWI 5k, Launched! Last month the CB Group held its media launch for the 6th staging of our CB Group UWI 5K, scheduled to start at the UWI Assembly Hall, on Sunday November 12, at 7:00am. The 5 consecutive years of the 5K have raised some $70 million used to assist over 200 students studying at the UWI Campus, and the UWI Scholarship Fund has awarded over 100 scholarships to outstanding students. At the launch, CB’s Dwen Gordon presented the 2017 $3.2 million cheque to the Fund, while guests were truly moved by Master of Ceremonies - Academic Scholarship recipient Keli-Jo Hewett-Dalling. In gearing up for the run, some of our CB Group members joined in on the Heroes in Action Run/Walk put on by the JN Foundation and the Usain Bolt Foundation. This marked their 3rd annual run and was held at the Falmouth Port in Trelawny on Sunday, October 15.

and tid-bits
Jamaican Jerk Turkey Ingredients: • 1 turkey (12-14 lbs) • ¾ cup butter • ¾ cup olive oil • 2 cups vinegar • 3 cups Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning/Sauce Items needed: • Turkey Injector • Roasting Pan • Pimento wood or Pimora Pimento Briquettes (optional)
Directions: 1. Wash the turkey with the vinegar (remove the giblets and neck that are usually stuffed in the turkey) then pat the outside of the turkey with paper towel to remove excess moisture. 2. Melt the butter then add 5 tbsp of the Jerk Seasoning to the butter and olive oil. Mix well. 3. Fill your turkey injector with the mixture and inject turkey legs and breast. Rub the remaining Jerk Seasoning on the outside and inside of the turkey. 4. Leave the turkey covered at room temperature for 3-4 hrs then put in the refrigerator (not freezer) to marinate overnight. Remove the turkey from refrigerator. 5. Over very low fire, place turkey on coal barbeque or smoker grill and cover. If you have pimento wood or Pimora pimento briquettes available, use with the coal. 6. Leave the turkey on the grill for 2 hrs, turning it so each side gets smoked from the coal. 7. Set the oven to 325 degrees. Place the turkey in the roasting pan and cook in the oven for 3 hrs, basting frequently with the mixture that was injected into the turkey. 8. When the turkey is cooked, leave juices in the roasting pan for the gravy. 9. Stuff the turkey to your liking and then put back in the oven at a low temperature to keep it warm. 10. Remove the turkey 20 minutes before carving. 11. Carve and ENJOY!
