Welcome It is official. Congrats to myself. I am old. I can get a discount in the Supermarket on Wednesdays. JADEP allows me to get medication free of cost as soon as I get a chronic disease. Soon, people will vacate their seats in the bus for me. It does not matter that I can out-work younger persons (in my mind at least). The big number is all powerful. But being a bit older has benefits. I can forget things anytime I want. I can choose not to hear you. And people understand when I fall asleep in boring meetings. Enough with the platitudes. Any society and company, including the CB Group, relies on its people and the skills, knowledge and dedication they possess. More than assets, these are the essential requirements for continuity and development, and we “seniors” have this in abundance! When we use these treasures and share our experiences with our younger colleagues, we not only improve our surroundings and company but we develop great minds and create good attitudes. “People with experience”, we have a job to do. Groom and mentor our younger ones. Develop the fresh brains into positive tools. Jamaica needs us to step up. And for the Millennials, Gen X and I-Gens: here is a warning: Don’t count us out! Our wheelchairs leave major scratches on your Audis!
H. Muller welcome

THE NEST goes public
O
n August 18th, the Group broke ground on our most ambitious project to date, “THE NEST”, our first Hybrid Growth Center (HGC) - a single location that houses multiple operations that are environmentally inter-dependent.
So why the name - ‘The Nest’? A “nest” is a place of rapid growth and development; an incubator of innovation, and a home. Though it is one single location, it will house 3 INDEPENDENT operations: 1. HILL RUN FARMS: our Research & Development Farm for livestock, where we grow 2.5 million+ chickens and 7500+ pigs annually 2. HARVEST HUB: our 500+ acre R&D Farm for our new crop division - Imagination Farms
3. ROC (Revolutionary Operations Centre): our new, world class poultry processing plant that we will be constructed over the next 24 months At the launch, Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Minister Karl Samuda both gave their support and hearty congratulations. CBG’s Mark Haskins, Lori-Ann Lyn and Matthew Lyn all for the first time, revealed to the public, the plans for The Nest. This is a major LEAP for the CB Group and we are excited for all that The Nest will bring!

Regional 1 bigger and better in Black River Returning to Independence Park in Black River, #PAN Regional 1 ignited even better this year with a BIGGER turnout than 2016. 29 pans lit with contestants from 6 parishes. Our expert judges carefully examined and tasted some of the island’s best PAN chicken. Our sponsors came out strong with tons of games and fun activities for patrons. JN introduced a JN Money Dance and the Monster Milk Kiddies Village was an absolute hit! For the first time, CBG’s Kemoi Burke took stage as Mr PAN. Another first for PAN, CB Group had its new brand Homegrown, available and our sweet corn was the #1 request all day, all night! By sun down, Chris Martin and Devin Di Dakta took centre stage and were hits among the crowd. Finally, it was time to announce the winners. All contestants received certificates and goodie baskets. To close the show, Gospel artist Kevin Downswell took the stage, captivating the crowd who sang along to every song. Congratulations to all the winners and runners up!

Curry Cookup celebrates Arnold Road, welcomes ‘The Nest’
The afternoon heat did not stop droves of Arnold Road staff to head over to Young Women’s Christian Association on August 17th. Dwen Gordon took the auditorium stage to welcome and thank everyone for their years of dedication and work. Mr Haskins, Mr Lyn and Mrs Lyn all took to the mic also to share their fond memories, and the reoccurring dream of an even bigger, better plant. Mr Raymore then took stage, and the applause, the cheers, the railing up… spoke volumes. He announced that the day has come where the long-time dream is finally coming true. He reminisced on times in the late 80s and 90s when Arnold Road was only a smidge of what it is today. We celebrated with curry and roti, cake and ice cream and of course PAN chicken. DJ Nico Bam Bam brought the vibes and the courtyard became a dancefloor. BIG thank you to all the hardworking folks at AR!!

Festivities at Hill Run reveal ‘The Nest’
CB Group staff along with some of our dear farmers and Homegrown customers gathered under red lights, with a beautiful view of the night sky at Imagination Farms in Hill Run, one of the three properties located at what has officially been dubbed as, ‘The Nest’. It was August 17th, the evening before The Nest’s big reveal to the public, where spirits were high, celebrations were in order with curry aromas and great music. Mr Haskins and Mr Lyn welcomed guests and shared the vision. For more information on what ‘The Nest’ is, check out page 5.

High School Students Gain Work Experience This summer, CB Group enrolled 24 high school students on our 4 week long Summer Work Experience Programme, designed to provide them with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience. These students, who are sons and daughters of CBG staff, were exposed to electronic filing, basic book keeping and administrative projects.

cb big ups — high school students gain work experience
At the programme’s closing, experiences and takeaways were shared. And guess what! Some of the students shared that they have a greater appreciation for their parents’ job. Would you look at that! A big thank you to all the CBG folks who accommodated these students! We look forward for your support in 2018.
University Student Internship Programme Our Internship Programme is about giving young adults an unforgettable work experience that inspires them to commit to making a difference for Jamaica. This year, we had 14 enthusiastic interns working across all locations with our IT, Marketing, Finance & Accounting, Live Production, QMS, Livestock Support and Production teams. At the closing session, they gushed about the invaluable experiences of working with the CBG family. They were surprised by how much they felt a part of the Company even though it was only a couple of weeks, and felt saddened that the programme had already ended. We were happy to have them and we look forward to next year’s interns.

Climate change facts
Climate change has pushed Earth into “uncharted territory”. Rising sea levels, melting arctic ice and record high temperatures are just some of the telltale signs. Temperatures are breaking records around the world The 21st century has seen the most temperature records broken in recorded history. 2016 was the hottest year on record since 1880. Sea levels are rising at their fastest rate in 2,000 years In July, a massive crack in the Larson C ice shelf gave way sending 5,800² km ice block into the ocean - now an iceberg 4x the size of London. Climate change will lead to a refugee crisis An average of 21.5 million people have been forcibly displaced since 2008 due to climate changedrelated weather hazards. We consumed all of Earth’s 2017 resources by this August ‘Earth Overshoot Day’ is an annual event when humanity’s consumption
outstrips Earth’s production of resources. This is getting earlier and earlier in the year. In 2000 it was in October; 2015, August 13. This year, it was on August
Global flooding could triple by 2030 The number of people exposed to flooding each year is at risk of tripling from 21 million to 54 million
Two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef has been damaged When algae living within coral tissue are expelled, usually as a result of water temperatures being too high, the coral loses its vibrant appearance, turns white and becomes weaker.
More greenhouse gases are in our atmosphere than any time in human history The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached the milestone of 400 parts per million for the first time in 2015 and surged again to new records in 2016
The ocean is 26 % more acidic than before the Industrial Revolution The pH of ocean surface water has decreased by 0.1, which makes them 26 % more acidic now than at any other point in the last 300,000 years.
Earth could warm by 6° this century As we continue to produce greenhouse gases, estimates for how much temperatures will increase by 2100 range from 2 °C to as much as 6 °C. Check out the full article at www.wired.co.uk/article/ climate-change-facts did you know?
