EDITOR’S NOTE
S tarting the Day Right
With that in mind, why shouldn’t our lavatories be just as presentable as the ready-to-face-the-day people who step out of them each morning? In this spring issue, Charleston Home + Design brings you over 50 local Lowcountry bathrooms that will inspire you to transform your simple restroom into a luxurious spa. You’ll want to upgrade to a rain-shower head, nix your average toilet in favor of a Toto Neorest, replace your laminate countertops with timeless marble, and maybe even add a built-in sound system to stream your favorite tunes. Perhaps the melodies will be those of Zac Brown Band, whose favorite writer and Isle of Palms local—Wyatt Durrette—just happens to be the guy lounging in the hammock on this issue’s cover. Learn about his time composing for Zac Brown and sneak a peek into his relaxed, yet polished, home in our feature “Behind the Lyrics.” If you’re in the process of building or remodeling and seek ideas beyond the bathroom, check out “Designer Shades,” which pinpoints the color palettes of local design projects, and “Your Kitchen Away from Home” with chef Bob Waggoner, who shares his favorite kitchen tips, tricks, and accessories. Finally, if you’re one who desires hands-on inspiration, flip to our section highlighting the Daniel Island Luxury Home Tour, which gives attendees an opportunity to see ultra-chic custom homes on Daniel Island up-close and in person. Throughout all the pages, I hope you find the ideas, information, and encouragement needed to start your next Lowcountry project.
M
y bathroom is my favorite room in the mornings; it’s where I begin my day with a tiny cup of espresso and a mascara wand in hand. It’s the spot where I look in the mirror to confirm that my scarf matches my shirt. It’s the space where the music plays loudly to draw my brain out of sleep and into the waking world. The bathroom is a dedicated place for making ourselves look well kempt—a place designed for our care and keeping.

MEET + GREET
Keeping Charleston Cool With 20 years of experience in the heating-and-cooling business under his belt, Charlestonian Medd Box of AirMax is a knowledgable heating-and-air professional, who focuses on expertly pairing locals with HVAC units suited to both their budget and their specific home.
(from left) Eric Smith (Service Manager), Medd Box (Owner), Clayton Bezdek (Sales), and Chris Clifton (General Manager)
If homeowners have high power bills, how can they reduce the energy consumed by their HVAC unit?
What process should homeowners expect when they begin working with AirMax?
When did AirMax begin and what is the goal of the company?
Medd: We actually specialize in high-efficiency equipment. If customers want to increase the energy efficiency of their HVAC unit and decrease their monthly energy bills, they can choose from ductless mini-splits, ducted mini-splits, high-static variablespeed compressor systems, and geothermal units. If it's time to replace an old unit, one of these types will save consumers energy and money in the long run.
Medd: When calls come into our office from homeowners, they most likely want to replace their unit or make it more efficient. Our sales representative, Clayton Bezdek, or I will visit the home and interview the customers to discover their concerns. We’ll consider whether the old unit needs to be fixed or replaced. If a new unit is needed, we will conduct a load calculation to determine the appropriate size. We’ll put together a proposal for the homeowners to show them all of their options, organized by price range, so that they can make informed decisions. Then, the work begins to place the system in the house.
Medd: I started AirMax five years ago, and my goal has always been getting a job right the very first time. We want to promise our clients that we’re going to do the work properly and that if something does go wrong in the process, we’re going to stick with the project until every single kink is worked out. I was born and raised here; I’m not going anywhere. If there is an error or problem, I’m here. This is my home. Customers know where to find me.

HE SAID / SHE SAID
The Ins and Outs of Custom Cabinets Spouses and co-owners Jay and Donna Miller of local company HWC Custom Cabinetry face off about cabinet selections and finishes.
Jay and Donna Miller of HWC Custom Cabinetry
He Said:
She Said:
He Said: Installing a nice set of cherry cabinets with a classic hand-applied stain is like buying fine clothing or jewelry. Trends come and go, but true elegance and quality are virtually timeless and always bespeak fine taste. With natural wood, it’s important to make sure that the stain is hand applied (not a sprayed-on color intended to make a cheaper wood like maple simulate a fine wood like mahogany). A quality stained wood cabinet will last for generations.
She Said: Painted. There are so many great colors to make your cabinet uniquely yours. We do our own finishing in-house to control the final product, ensuring that the paint color is applied smoothly and will remain vivid as the cabinets age.
He Said: Lots of drawers in a kitchen design! Pullouts behind doors had their time, but with our ability to size drawers to a client’s specific needs, they are the storage solution of choice. This is especially true for our older clients (for whom aging in place is a priority) or for those who just get weary lifting that big ol’ KitchenAid mixer out of the depths of a lower cabinet. He Said: Well, soft-close drawers certainly are the most popular item requested by homeowners in cabinetry. It is almost considered to be standard in our projects these days. It is very sought-after and adds a touch of refinement.
Painted or Stained?
Best Accessory?
Standard Drawers or Soft-Close Technology?
She Said: I really like vertical pullout racks, which can be integrated into spaces that are often overlooked because of their odd or skinny shape. They are decorative (they look just like a normal cabinet door), yet functional. I love to see a beautiful design, but having a place for everything makes me more productive in the kitchen. She Said: I have a pet peeve with any technology that tries to do my thinking for me. Maybe sometimes I want to slam my cabinet doors or drawers [laughs]. In all seriousness, the soft-close doors are a pretty significant price increase; if push comes to shove in a project, it’s not a bad thing to cut costs by using standard drawers. For resale value, a potential buyer is going to fall in love with a kitchen before they even open a door or drawer.

HOMEWORK
~ ~ Marty and Alane Whitaker of Tailored Closets At Home with
Seeking to provide Charleston homeowners with streamlined, efficient closet systems, Marty and Alane Whitaker, owners of Tailored Closets, opened their own home to the Charleston Home + Design team to show us exactly how a well-organized closet should look and function.
1
With the goals of maximizing the use of the closet’s square footage, improving the lighting, and implementing organization, the Whitakers were able to design a functional storage space that doubles as a dressing room. Accessories, like acrylic drawer dividers, LED lighting, a pullout ironing board, valets, and tie racks, helped to achieve these goals.
2
A tilt-out chrome laundry hamper allows Marty and Alane to stow away their dirty clothes until washday when they simply remove the canvas bag full of garments and take it to the laundry room.
3
The pullout pants rack provides a dedicated space for Marty to store his slacks. As a bonus, undermount LED lights work on a sensor system to illuminate when Marty needs to decipher between navy blue and black.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON THE CRAFTSMAN:
Jim Jacobs of Charleston Woodworks Photography by Margaret Rambo
THE CRAFT:
Charleston Woodworks specializes in custom woodcrafts ranging from cabinets and entertainment centers to fireplace surrounds and furniture. Today, Jim and his team are fabricating a custom wood countertop for the personal kitchen of longtime client and builder Will Danielson of NMB Construction Company.
THE BACKSTORY:
Jim, with a passion for repairing antiques and creating custom furniture pieces, began his first company—Jacobs Woodcraft—back in 1979. In the early eighties, he transformed the business, changing the name to Charleston Woodworks and expanding from furniture crafting to larger projects. Now, Jim works closely with local builders and homeowners in both the residential and commercial sectors.
THE PROCESS:
Creating a wooden kitchen countertop begins with, well, rough wood. The material used for this counter in particular is walnut. Jim orders his lumber from local wholesale suppliers and brings the boards back to his workshop on upper Meeting Street. There, he runs the wood through a ripsaw to create straight edges. He then places the plank into a planer to smooth out the surfaces. A jointer is then used to create precision edges along the length of the ripped board. Then, Jim transports the countertop to the home to be attached to the cabinetry; a plumber installs the sink and fixtures. Jim seals the top with Howard Butcher Block Conditioner, giving the slab a finished look without the use of any harsh chemicals (which, for safety, should be avoided in kitchen applications). Once conditioned, the surface is ready for the homeowners and the thousands of meals they will prepare during the lifetime of the countertop.
For more information, call Charleston Woodworks at (843) 744-0016 or visit charlestonwoodwork.com.

High-Tech Finesse David Smith, co-owner of AV Lifestyles, takes CH+D through his day of installing home theaters and troubleshooting. He showed us how technology nerds really do have more fun.
8:00am
David spends his morning organizing the team by answering emails, confirming appointments, and fine-tuning the day’s schedule. From there, the team heads out to the first appointments of the day.
9:45am
David spends some time looking at the days ahead and planning a tentative schedule. He explains, though, that it’s more important to be flexible and accommodating toward current and potential clients than it is to have a rigid schedule. That way, he can make sure that everyone’s needs are met.
10:30am
David meets with potential clients in Mt. Pleasant to reconstruct an existing system. David updates and replaces their complicated system with an easy-to-use Control4 system.
1:00pm
David heads out to a home downtown to have lunch with two long-time clients, J. Larry and Cheryl Hamby, to discuss the updates he already made to their home theater (pictured above). He also makes sure that everything is still working properly and answers every question the couple asks with detailed, yet understandable explanations.
4:30pm
Back at the office, it’s time to recheck emails and phone messages. Then, he moves on to some troubleshooting that can be easily fixed (for the tech-savvy David, that is) remotely. With the advancements in technology, every system that AV Lifestyles installs can be controlled and fixed from his office.
5:45pm
After an end-of-the-day meeting with partner Trever Van Etten, David heads home to spend time with his family.
For more information, call AV Lifestyles at (843) 277-0059 or visit myavlife.com.

Got WaterSense?
B
Article by Ashley Grimes
uilders and homeowners alike are searching for ways in which they can conserve water while lowering the amount of money spent on utilities each month. Installing products in your home that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label will lead to saving hundreds of gallons of water each year, allow more water to remain in local reservoirs, and lower the amount of energy used to pump and heat water throughout your house. Some products that can be swapped with green alternatives include faucets, toilets, and showerheads. There are also geothermal products that can be installed inside pipelines that help with water efficiency. By saving water via these eco-friendly products, you are helping to produce a thriving environment and saving water for future generations. Shop for a builder with experience in water conservation or ask your builder about using WaterSense-approved products. n the Lowcountry, air conditioning systems work overtime to keep everyone cool in the scorching summer months, and each year, energy costs increase. To help reduce the energy used and your bill, an energy audit can be performed on your home to pinpoint where the majority of kilowatt-hours are used. Most auditors will inspect every room in the house as well as examine past energy bills to identify the problem. You will also receive recommendations about how to make other areas of your home more energy efficient for the future. Not to mention, energy audits provide solutions that will improve indoor air quality, increase your home’s resale value, and much more.

H2OME
Fertilizing Flora Like all living things, plants need certain nutrients to grow, and they get a vast majority of those vitamins and minerals from the soil. In densely populated communities like Charleston, the decomposition process vital to a thriving ecosystem is interrupted, and most coastal soil is lacking important supplements due to water erosion. With their targeted soil-conditioning procedure, Schneider Tree Care aerates the soil around the trees in order to strengthen the roots and fertilizes the tree with an organic liquid that is essentially a giant multivitamin for the plant. As an extra step in sustaining tree health, Schneider Tree Care recommends soil break-up every two years, root pruning every three to five years, and nutrient injection every six months. All of this helps to protect trees against harsh winds and rain when and if a hurricane rolls in from the ocean. For More Information:

Among the options are geothermal pipe systems, swimming pool linings, and wood-plastic composites. In the Lowcountry, HDPE is a prime choice for furniture fabrication because it is maintenance free and impervious to salt and sun. Amish built and Charlestonweather approved, this particular sample—assembled with 304 stainless-steel bearings for extra sturdiness—adds elegance and style to any outdoor living space and provides comfortable seating for a relaxing day by the pool. YOUR MONEY'S WORTH
Taking a Look at the Cost of
Rhino Shield Exterior Coating The exterior of a house is the very first impression it can make on the world, but it’s the outside world that can also undermine that first impression. The sun fades the color, and the weather ages it by making the paint peel, buckle, or crack—and that’s just the façade. Serious damage can also be caused to the substrate by not adequately protecting the exterior of your home. We sat down with Jon Rosa of Rhino Shield to learn how he and his team have squelched the weather’s power to destroy a home’s exterior.
Flexible Shield
Paint is a great option for interior applications, but it is at least 60-percent water. It doesn’t protect the underlying structure from the sun or from moisture buildup between the coat of paint and the wall (which can create problems like mold growth, deterioration, and pest infestation). However, the ceramic-based coating that Rhino Shield provides is only 21-percent water and 8 to 10 times thicker than paint, so it does not have the same problems that often occur with standard paint applications.
Ceramic Strong
Aside from the water ratio, the ceramicbased coating consists of elastomeric resins, which give the coating the ability to expand and contract with a home’s substrate. It also contains ceramic microspheres (to provide the benefit of high-heat and UV-ray resistance) and mildewcides (to specifically prevent mold growth).
Long-Term Savings
Investing in a product that safeguards the exterior of your home isn’t strictly aesthetic. The elastomeric coating is environmentally friendly, reduces energy consumption due to its high solar-reflective index rating, and comes with a 25-year warranty. To top it all off, Rhino Shield offers 1,500 different hues, which means you can paint your home any shade—from Charleston Green to Caribbean Coral. Just make sure you love the color; it will last for decades!

Building Contracts

Unit-Price Contract “In a unit-price construction contract, the client or owner pays a fixed sum for each completed unit of work.”
Lump-Sum Contract

“A lump-sum contract is also referred to as a fixed-price contract. The contractor agrees that, for a set price, he or she will construct a home according to the set of plans and specifications described in the contract.” Kara Crowell | Cinder Creek Construction (843) 768-0784 • cindercreek.net
Guaranteed-MaximumPrice Contract
“For a cost-plus contract, the contractor agrees to invoice the owner as he incurs labor and material costs and adds a percentage for overhead and profit that is set in the original agreement.”
“A guaranteed-maximum-price contract is an open-book agreement between the homeowner and the contractor. The contractor is paid for the actual cost of the work plus a fixed fee to manage the project, which is guaranteed not to exceed an estimated price included in the contract. In this type of contract, any savings from the estimate are passed on to the owner, and the contractor is responsible for cost overruns unless the scope of the work changes.”

ASK THE EXPERTS
George Brown
Applied Sciences
Homeowners have so many technological devices these days; how can they protect them? “Generators are a great first line of defense to ensure your home is never without power, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Backup batteries are always important to keep on hand, and fuel cells also play a major role in maintaining a steady source of power. Uninterruptable power systems (UPS) tie all of those things together by providing clean energy via power conditioners, which are part of the system we install throughout a home. The electricity that comes through the UPS is clean, which means there are no variations in the strength of the power waves or breaks in its consistency that could otherwise lead to surges and blackouts.”

Scott Kafka
Mosquito Nix How do mosquito control systems work, and do parents have anything to worry about regarding the safety of their children and pets? “Our mosquito control system works a lot like an irrigation system, except it doesn’t go in the ground. There is a series of nozzles we install throughout the yard—typically where the mosquitos like to live and breed, such as thick foliage and standing water. We also set up a perimeter around where your family spends the most time. As far as safety is concerned, the pesticide we use is highly diluted in water and derived from chrysanthemum plants. After it is sprayed, it is only toxic for about five to fifteen minutes and then it is perfectly safe. It’s a very low-risk insecticide and it biodegrades after a few hours.”

Eddie Plowden
Berkeley Electric Cooperative
How can homeowners save energy and cut bills in the warm weather? “Besides the more obvious things like turning lights off when you leave a room and adjusting the cooling temperatures while no one is home, there are steps homeowners can take to discover and fix problem areas. Berkeley Electric has a great Home Advantage Loan Program that can finance energy saving improvements. We lend the money to the homeowners with low interest rates. Ideally, the program is designed so that the energy savings should cover the cost of the loan. For the parts of Charleston that we can’t reach, there are options for similar services, such as the Charleston Wise program and the Sustainability Institute’s blower door tests.”

Imported from their native land of Australia, these red prickly plants (commonly referred to as bottlebrushes) are like magnets for hummingbirds.
These Saw Palmettos, used most often as ground coverage in flowerbeds, are incredibly resilient and can withstand Charleston’s fluctuating weather patterns.
Sago Palms, like the one near the stairs of this home, are beautiful, but they are recommended for families without pets; the plant is toxic if ingested by dogs or cats.

Building Blocks
Company: Dynamic Design-Build Credentials: Frank has been in the construction business for over thirty years now. Between experience in high-stability construction on the beaches, historic home renovation on the peninsula, and custom kitchen and bath design everywhere else in the Lowcountry, Frank has seen and done it all.
What are the best features of this home? The LED lights. The owner started with a few programmable, remotecontrolled multi-colored LED light fixtures. By the time we finished, we had placed them around the TV and entertainment center, in several corners, on a ceiling fan, under the kitchen cabinets, as well as around the tub and master shower! They look great, accent the décor, and set the atmosphere of the living spaces. Most of them can be controlled right from a smart phone or tablet.
Which part of this home’s construction and design are you most proud of ? We get a lot of satisfaction from the design-build process. Clients usually have a feeling or idea of what they want, but may not be sure about how to put it all together. Since we design in-house, I like to lead the clients into their own decisions by listening to them first, working with them on styles and options that fit their budget, and staying flexible throughout the process. The best compliment for us is when the finished product represents the client’s desires and excellent craftsmanship.
What is your background in construction? I've been in the building trade for over 30 years now. First, I spent hands-on time in every phase of residential construction. I worked in painting, framing, trim and drywall, concrete, siding, and roofing. Then, I moved on to drafting and design. After doing quite a bit of renovation and project management, I obtained my residential builders license. Currently, we construct stick-built and modular homes. We also create our own custom cabinetry and countertops. For more information, call Dynamic Design-Build at (843) 225-3610 or visit dynamicdesign-build.com.

Designer: Karen Germond Dunlap Company: KMD Interiors Credentials: After earning a bachelor’s degree in business and completing a 13-year-long career in the health-insurancemanagement industry, Karen decided it was time to pursue her true and lifelong passion of interior design. In Virginia, she attended interior design school at Marymount University and worked for two design firms. She created her own business—KMD Interiors—in 2009.
Do you have a signature style? My signature style incorporates strong influences of coastal elements along with my love for the Lowcountry. I love the architectural character and style that embodies the Deep South with its richly carved woods, iron scrollwork, colorful warm palettes, and subtle tropical influences. Also, I grew up on the coast and love to incorporate those elements that remind me of many childhood days spent at the beach—the soft colors of sand and sky, the reflective element of the ocean, the gentle waving of dune grass, and the rich warm texture of the sand.
What is your favorite piece of furniture or accessory in this home? The silver-leaf accent table from Pearson. I initially saw it at High Point market and immediately pictured it in this space. The unique hexagon profile, combined with a soft metallic finish and curved cabriole base, fits beautifully into the space. The piece balances nicely with the cleaner lines of the other furniture the homeowners and I selected.
What’s one feature that you think every room should have? Good lighting! It is the one element that people always seem to brush off when looking at a room’s design, but in my opinion, it is where the design should start. If you don’t have good lighting in a space, everything else falls short of what it otherwise could be. It makes the design truly shine—both aesthetically and functionally. Architects + Archetypes
Company: The Middleton Group Credentials: In 1999, Blake received his design degree from Clemson University; that same year, Laura graduated from Auburn University with an architecture degree. The couple began The Middleton Group in 2007 and has since been designing both commercial and residential structures in the Charleston metro area.
The home pictured is actually a multi-family structure that you designed for a peninsular Charleston neighborhood. What is the importance of these types of homes in the downtown area? Laura: They make homeownership more affordable for residents. For a lot of people, purchasing a whole house located on the peninsula is out of reach. Multi-family homes allow for a greater variety of socioeconomic statuses to live within the city and to invest in the area.
What part of the design do you find to be the most appealing? Blake: I think the coolest part is that it looks like a single-family house, not a unit of condos or apartments. Because of this design, it blends with the neighborhood. That made the Board of Architectural Review happy [laughs].
Why is it important to have an architect involved in building projects? Laura: I would say that an architect brings specific expertise in terms of construction detailing and advanced customization. Blake: To add to that, we look at the building envelope as a whole and focus on how we can build correctly—from the structural support to the proper HVAC unit size. And then there’s a liability factor, too. Sometimes, a contractor or homeowner will buy a plan online, and there’s no going back to somebody to say that the design was wrong. As architects, we’re required to take responsibility for our designs and their functionality. For more information, call The Middleton Group at (843) 302-0632 or visit themiddletongroup.net.

As she began mapping out the plan for the new look, Holly knew two people she definitely wanted to include on the project—long-time friends Sonya Buckhannon (owner of Buckhannon Brothers Tile) and Jessica Markley (plumbing fixture guru of local company Moluf ’s Supply). Holly began at Buckhannon Brothers, where she chose a combination of clean white porcelains and bold turquoise tiles to outfit the entire house. Then, she visited Moluf ’s, where Jessica helped Holly choose the correct fixtures for the coastal look she was seeking.
Jessica explains, “We gave the homeowners what I like to call sparkle with modern-style polished nickel fixtures throughout the house.” Striving also for functionality, the polished nickel was paired with stainless-steel sinks in the kitchen to match the appliances and to provide durability and easy cleanup for minimal stress during vacation time. M
ost know that colors and patterns are the basic elements of every interior design project, but few truly enjoy turning an infinite number of combinations into a masterpiece. That’s where Cyndie McManus of Aiden Fabrics comes into the picture. She explains, “Beach homes can be especially tricky, because it can be hard not to let the patterns get too trendy or too beach-cutesy. Furthermore, too many patterns and color variations can be overwhelming in one place. There needs to be a balance as well as some consistency. The homeowners knew that, but they had amassed a lot
of furniture and meaningful items over the years, so it was hard to find a place to start. I find that’s true for a lot of people, myself included.” A blue-and-green coral fabric that the couple absolutely adored sparked the color scheme. The fabric became the focal point in the main room as the floor-length custom draperies that span the length of the wall and lead onto the porch. Once they found that swatch, Cyndie and the homeowners built around it with some special pieces they already owned (like a cabinet that has been in the family
for generations), a custom dining table made of repurposed dock wood, a beautiful blue couch, and a green upholstered rocking chair to match the curtain. “The whole process is a marriage, of sorts. I have to figure out what the homeowners want. The furniture needs to complement the colors, and the colors have to complement the space. That doesn’t even take into account the accents, like lighting and wall décor,” Cyndie observes. “That’s why it’s so important to get to know my clients first. If that doesn’t happen, then the rest of the process doesn’t render good results.”

(above left) Found in one of the guest bedrooms, this coral-colored nightstand was another piece that Cyndie painted for the couple, knowing that the neutral starfish-patterned custom drapes and lighter blue hues needed an extra splash of color. (above right) According to Cyndie, every room needs a few distinctive details, so she helped the couple pick out the bedspread and the hand-blown glass lamp to add impact.
From the shades of blue and green mixed with whites and rich wood textures, it’s clear that the home has oceanic influence. “The design came from nature—from the sand and the water,” Cyndie adds. And she’s right. The sand and the water inspired a sophisticated (rather than kitschy) beach abode with a gentle style that lulls guests into the sway of the nearby waves. v

Since oak is such a durable wood, Chris and the homeowners decided that staining (with a “Harper Gray” tint, named for Harper Construction’s ability to
customize the product) would be better than replacing them. Of the home’s style, Chris explains, “We have a strong partnership with Shannon Bogan at S. Bogan Designs, who brought in all the décor, worked to make the kitchen flow into the rest of the house, and chose the color scheme.” The neutral palette
proves to be both chic and modern; the “Accessible Beige” paint is a Sherwin-Williams color that Chris and his team really love. nocking it out of the park. Batting a thousand. On the ball. Project Manager at Maner Fence Company and James Island native Robert Pritcher, who played baseball locally through high school and college, is no stranger to the idioms of the game. In fact, he’s been able to apply those statements of excellence to his career in fencing. Maner Fence Company, the sister business of Georgia-based Maner Building Supply, has placed picket, chain-link, and privacy fences on thousands of properties in the Tri-County area. One in particular is the home of Dean Kelly, owner of Carpet Baggers Carpet One in West Ashley.

Dean had several requests when considering an enclosure for his family’s marsh-front backyard in the Poplar Grove subdivision. He, first and foremost, did not want to block the view of the natural surroundings. However, he also wanted to make sure that hound-dog Hank and spaniel Hudson (named for Atlanta Braves players Hank Aaron and Tim Hudson) couldn’t escape the confines of the yard. Finally, he desired the fence to be aesthetically appealing and able to withstand the salty air of the marsh without rusting or quickly deteriorating.
With these parameters in mind, Robert narrowed down the choices to an Alumi-Guard powder-coated aluminum picket fence. Robert explains, “We chose the Alumi-Guard because the company’s products are made for coastal conditions—for being on the marsh and being near the water. The manufacturer does a voluntary salt-spray test, which surpasses 8,000 hours. That means that the team places the product (once it has been powder coated) in a chamber, shoots it with salt water, and records how long it takes for the material to fail. in this environment for roughly 30.” With the material selected, Dean had a few other choices to make to meet his other requirements. Robert recommended a picket fence (as opposed to a privacy fence) to allow the Kelly family to still enjoy the view, but he suggested adding a puppy picket to the design. A puppy picket is a band of fence near the ground that features bars of aluminum placed closely together to keep wandering dogs inside.
To add a bit of aesthetic appeal, Dean chose to incorporate quad finials that sit atop each picket. At the end of the day, Dean, with the help of Robert, hit a home run with his selections—the fence looks beautiful, protects his dogs, preserves his view, and will last for years to come. v

From the Ground Up Two homeowners—both with a host of distinctions and medals for their work with the CIA— decided to settle down in a craftsman-style home situated in a quiet Mt. Pleasant neighborhood.
A
fter careers chasing down notorious terrorists and protecting the nation’s secrets, John Herms and Shirene Hansotia, who both served in the CIA, decided that it was time for a drastically different adventure—homebuilding. Because they had worked with builder Fisher Walter of Walter Construction a number of years ago on a project near Edisto, John and Shirene knew they wanted to work with him again when they purchased a plot of land in Mt. Pleasant. The team developed a plan—with the assistance of Tim Hilkhuijsen of Architecture Plus—for a 3,100-squarefoot craftsman-style home with ce-
dar shakes, coffered ceilings, natural wood accents, and classic finishes. What makes beautiful custom houses come together, though, is not simply the ideas of the builder and architect; truckloads of building supplies are necessary for the concept to spring to tangible life. For this aspect, Fisher worked with Joey Hager at Buck Lumber and Building Supply, who managed the procurement of not just the rich, quality woods of the interior décor and the wind-resistant windows, but also the nuts and bolts that actually hold the home together. Fisher and Joey handled the behind-
the-scenes aspects of the house; they ordered everything needed from the buckets of galvanized nails for the subfloor to the wood for framing. Then, the homeowners jumped in to choose the visible elements of the home. Shirene visited the Buck Lumber Design Center on Maybank Highway. Joey elaborates, “She and her mom came by one afternoon to the Design Center, and she was really able to see and feel what items she was going to purchase. Because of the vignette-style displays, it’s a great place to start, to brainstorm, and to learn what’s available on the market.” At the end of the day, Shirene picked out a mahogany CH+D • Spring 2015

For the inside trim, coffers, paneling, and stairwell railing, Fisher and the homeowners decided upon a combination of stained oak (for the areas that needed a harder, more durable wood like the hand rails) and pine (for little-used installations like the coffers). They applied the same shade of stain to all the timber surfaces of the home to give the space a unified and complete craftsman look—the fruition of John and Shirene’s original vision that could not have been accomplished without the design of the architect, the expertise and management of the builder, and the materials gleaned at the lumberyard. v

Wyatt and Kelly Durrette
Songwriter for Zac Brown Band Wyatt Durrette and his wife, Kelly, talk life on the road and settling down on Southern ground at their Isle of Palms slice of paradise. 112

T
hree months ago, I boarded a plane headed to Cancun with my husband and my family, eager to dig my toes into white-sand beaches and float weightlessly in aquamarine waters. There was
a playlist on my iPhone for the occasion—a hearty mix of Jimmy Buffett and Zac Brown Band. Little did I know that just a short while later I would be sitting in the living room of the man who wrote many of the songs featured on my ready-for-the-Caribbean mix. As the co-author of “Knee Deep,” “No Hurry,” “Toes,” and “Jump Right In,” Wyatt Durette has a long history with the bearded and famed Zac Brown. The two men met in a bar—the Dixie Tavern in Atlanta, to be exact—over fifteen years ago, and they began writing together, developing some of the lyrics and melodies found on the band’s three major albums. Now, as the group’s success continues to grow, Wyatt travels with Zac and the guys around the country, composing lines and creating music meant to resonate strongly with listeners. When he’s not on the road, Wyatt spends his time at his home on Isle of Palms with his wife, Kelly, his son, Wyatt, and their two rambunctious dogs, Rambo and Layla. I could do nothing but listen with fascination as Wyatt spoke of his work on over ten of the band’s most popular songs, his laid-back days here on the Carolina coast, and his budding business venture known as Livin’ Life Man.

(left) Wyatt and Kelly’s Isle of Palms beach house was built in 2006. The couple purchased it nearly three years ago after falling in love with its charm and its seclusion. (above) Recently, local pool company Aqua Blue Pools installed this oasis for the Durrettes. It's their favorite place to host friends and family.
Wyatt, you began this journey of songwriting many years ago—even before you met Zac at the Dixie Tavern. What was your very first song, and do you remember any of the lyrics? Wyatt: I was 11, and I remember the whole song. I still do. The first few lines went, “People don’t know what it’s like to be in love. They tell you not to worry. You’ll find somebody else, but then there’s that feeling down deep in your soul. People don’t know what it’s like to be in love.” I look back on it and think, That’s not so bad for someone who had no earthly idea what love was. Everyone in the band knows it. They were impressed by it, but it will never be anything more than my little secret—well, not anymore [laughs].
At that time, did you want to perform your songs on stage? Wyatt: At first, yes, but I figured out a long time ago, when I finally got to get on stage in high school, that I don’t like it up there. I don’t like the attention drawn to me; I like it put elsewhere. I’m not really that great, but I will sing with the band every now and then. I got to sing at Fenway Park recently and was in front of 40,000 people, and that was the biggest rush of my life. My hands didn’t stop shaking for a while after the performance. That was enough, though. After one song, I was like, “Get me off the stage, now.” So it doesn’t bother you to be out of the limelight?
Wyatt: It’s great for me, actually. I like being able to sit back and watch the band perform every night like I’m a fan. I get to watch the crowd sing the words I write. That’s validation for me at every show. People who do know me come up and tell me how much the songs mean to them, and that’s really all I need. That’s why I fell in love with music to begin with—the power that it holds and how it makes people feel. I’ve been in restaurants and bars sitting next to people singing along to songs I wrote, and they have no clue that I wrote them, which is awesome. Most of the time, I don’t tell them. I don’t say a word; I just appreciate that they like my work. I couldn’t ask for a better position. I tell Kelly all the time that I think I have one of the best jobs in the world.

(above) The back porch, which is screened in and overlooks the pool, is Wyatt’s favorite spot to write. He and Kelly begin their day with coffee each morning on the porch. (right) Bobbi Jo Engelby of Domain Interiors helped merge Kelly’s modern tastes with Wyatt’s more traditional tastes to create a cohesive look for the living room.
It took a long time—about fifteen years—for the band to rise to its current status on the music scene. Were there ever moments during your friendship with Zac in which you doubted that your songs and the band were going to make it? Wyatt: I had those moments, but there was something about Zac that made me just always kind of believe in the guy. The day I met him, I knew there was something special about him when he was on stage. Through his voice and through his presence, the audience couldn’t help but listen—even if they didn’t like the type of music he was playing. I knew that we were still wishing on a faraway star. The percentages of making it were very small, but I also knew that if the right person at the right time heard this band, and heard Zac play, and heard our music

that it could happen. That ended up being Keith Stegall, who produced the first couple of albums. Your days are, I’m sure, very different from your early years with Zac playing in bars. What’s your job like now when you’re on the road? Wyatt: We’ve always been creatures of the night. I worked in bars until this started paying the bills, and Zac played in them. In lifestyles like that, work doesn’t start until 10 o’clock, so we usually did most of our writing very late at night after the shows. We still do that. During the day, there’s a lot of hurry up and wait [laughs]. Usually, I wake up, I have breakfast, I work out, then I have two to three hours of free time. Then,
what we do is a little bit different. A lot of other bands don’t go onstage until 8:30 at night, but we do Eat and Greet events with the band. We have a chef, Rusty Hamlin, who cooks a full Southern gourmet meal for about 200 fans before each show. The band and I actually serve the guests their food, and we sit down and have dinner with them. So with this, our days start a little earlier. After that, we have a vocal warm-up time. It’s that quiet moment when everything else goes away, and no one is allowed to bother the band, and you can’t come in even if you wanted to. That’s kind of how a typical day goes. How does composing lyrics with Zac and other songwriters actually work?

(above) The master bedroom, according to Kelly, is her favorite room in terms of the design. She describes, “It’s one of those rooms that I look at and think, This was a success.” (facing page left) The front entryway is inviting with its powder-blue walls, natural wood ceilings, and bahama shutters. (facing page right) Because they both love to cook and enjoy making a meal together, the kitchen has become one of the most used rooms in the house.
Wyatt: We’re forever writing, and we write a lot of pieces and parts to songs. We’re not afraid to let a song take 10 years to complete. We just put it on the shelf. The idea we have in our heads is that a song writes you; you don’t write the song. If you try to force it, you’re going to end up not telling the truth of the point you want to get across. So a lot of times, we’ll take pieces in songs and realize that they go with pieces in other songs. Take the first part of “Toes”: “Toes in the water, ass in the sand.” I wrote that about a trip to Key West. Later, I started writing another song about a guy living in Los Angeles and leaving to go down to Mexico. The lines were, “Adios and vaya con dios; I’m leaving LA” to begin with. So we were working on the verses to “Toes,” and we were getting to the chorus. Zac said, “Oh my god, what about that thing you wrote with the words adios and vaya con dios”? So

we switched the words from LA to GA, and that’s how it got pieced together. I’m the kind of writer who normally writes about my life. It usually comes from some experience that has happened or something I feel very strongly about. Then, I just try to say it in the shortest amount of time. I think that people know when you’re not making it up. They know when songs are written honestly because they recognize the feeling, which is what I love about the music—that feeling that you’re not alone and someone else has felt the same way. Is there one of your songs that you think displays that honesty and transparency particularly well? Wyatt: If I look back, “Highway 20 Ride” has always been very close to my heart. The song was written in a lot of
pain, but now it’s a celebration to me of all we’ve been through. Wyatt, my son, lives seven miles away with his mom, and we’re so close to him. The song shows that with love and respect for each other, you can get through difficult times. As far as really well done songs all around, “Colder Weather” and “Sweet Annie” came together great— musically, sonically, lyrically. Some of your songs—like “Sweet Annie” and “Colder Weather”—are about past feelings and past loves. Kelly, does hearing those songs ever bother you? Kelly: No, it doesn’t. Those relationships were a long time ago, and the songs have been sitting on the shelf for years. I understand that it’s something that was before we started dating and married.
Wyatt: She knows exactly what the songs are about before they’re even sung. I usually don’t write about past things. I write about the here-and-now, and that hereand-now was a long time ago. If I wrote “Sweet Annie” or “Colder Weather” today, she would be like, “Seriously? Is there something I need to know?” [laughs]
dream of wanting to live here. Ever since I was seven years old, I’ve been coming to Wild Dunes. As an adult, my father, my son, and I would come here to Isle of Palms. It was always a very special place to me, and I always said, “If I can afford it and if I can do it, I want to live and raise a family here.”
Are some of the more recent songs about you, Kelly?
On our first trip, we saw about ten houses, and this was the last one we visited. We loved the house to begin with; then, we saw all the land we could have and the endless possibilities of the backyard. It was kind of a no-brainer for us. We couldn’t resist the solitude, and all the nature, and how the house lets all that nature in. It’s just a really peaceful, special place.
Kelly: “Keep Me in Mind.” That’s the song that started when we first met at a gig the band was playing in Gun Barrel City, Texas. Wyatt: There was a period of time during which we saw each other for a little bit, but then she got into a serious relationship. We separated for about three or four years, but we found our way back together. During that separation, I wrote “Keep me in Mind.” Once you were back together, how did you two transition from Texas to Charleston? Wyatt: We got engaged, and we moved to Atlanta. Then, I told Kelly about my
Kelly, you’ve been able to transform this house into a place that is like a home. What was your goal with the interior design? Kelly: We worked with an interior designer, Bobbi Jo [Engelby of Domain Interiors], and she knew that Wyatt is more of a traditional guy and I’m more of a contemporary girl. She helped us find a
happy medium. I kind of like bohemian styles, too, and I had some items from my home state of Texas that I wanted to incorporate. We worked to mesh all of that together. When you’re on the road, Wyatt, what do you miss most about this home? Wyatt: I miss my wife and son the most. By missing them, I miss this place because it’s where they are. This is the first house of my own that really feels like a home. I find such solitude and peace here. It is the extreme opposite of what it’s like on the road, and I long for it when I’m away. On tour, there’s always someone five feet in front of me, which is great, but after two weeks out there, I’m ready to come home. After a few weeks home, I feel like it’s time to get back. I need both in my life. What do you do to relax and find peace while you’re at home, away from the hectic nature of the road? Wyatt: We’ve grown to appreciate Charleston, in general. When I was a

kid, vacations were all about the beach. I never saw downtown Charleston. If we went out, it was to Red’s Ice House. Now, we love wine, and we love food. This town, as far as food and wine, you can’t beat it. We do a lot of outdoor stuff, too. My son surfs and skim boards; I’m scared of it. I always hurt myself [laughs]. Kelly: We like to jog, and we like to hop on our bikes. We have cruisers, and we’ll take those around the island. We also put a lot of free time into a clothing line we’re starting. Tell me a little bit more about this clothing line. Kelly: The apparel company is called Livin’ Life Man, and it promotes living life in a positive motion. We’re working on an active-wear line, and we currently have tee shirts and hats available online. In a perfect world, we’d like to have a stand-alone store downtown Charleston. Wyatt: For us, the message of the brand is just as important as growing the apparel line. At the end of the day, we want the logo—a man whose body spells life—to be something that

somebody looks at, whether it be a bumper sticker or a shirt, that reminds them that life can be better and lived more positively. It’s about pursuing and chasing down your dreams and living life to the fullest. But it’s also about making sure you get out and help other people do the same. It’s about helping your community, helping other people in need—from kind words to a stranger to volunteering. Kelly: To be a positive influence on others, a good portion of the busi-

charity we felt passionate about. For example, I’m a testicular cancer survivor, so there’s a charity that I support called The Boys. It’s about teaching younger men that it’s not an embarrassing thing and to get checked. If it’s caught early, it’s one of the most curable cancers. Kelly: So the shirt colors align with the charities we’ve chosen, and we’d like to continue adding non-profits as time goes by. Wyatt: Like any business, it takes a moment, but it’s getting there.
It seems as though there’s no limit to what the two of you can achieve, and you have no problem working hard during the getting-there period. Wyatt, you’ve come from the position of a bartender scribbling lyrics on paper napkins to travelling the country with the band. Now, you and Kelly are creating this great brand from the ground up. The next Zac Brown Band album, Jekyll and Hyde, is set to release on April 28th. Could you fill me in on this most recent accomplishment?
Wyatt: I’m sworn to secrecy. What I can tell you is that each album has slowly branched out from the country-music genre. This album will do that the most— more than any we’ve had so far. It goes in a bunch of different directions in a good way. It challenged the band as musicians and me as a writer because it goes outside our box. I’m very excited about it, and it has a lot of good songs on it. That’s really all I can say. You’re going to hear one song and then the next, and you’ll be surprised that it’s the same band. It showcases their talent, and you won’t be disappointed. CH+D • Spring 2015

Select these unique colors and a portion of the proceeds supports the ongoing preservation projects of the Historic Charleston Foundation. For the colors shown and more, visit one of the 13 Sherwin-Williams locations in the Charleston area or 6 throughout the Low Country.

Story by Erin Forbes | Photography by Margaret Rambo
If
you’ve had the pleasure of meeting chef Bob Waggoner, then you know he’s the epitome of a laid-back, fun-loving educator. Cooking might be his job, but providing a fun, instructional environment for people to learn about food is his passion.
CH+D • Spring 2015

A
fter almost taking a job at a hotel in Savannah, Bob Waggoner had an epiphany. “The owners of the hotel had an interesting idea for a cooking class, but I wanted to take what they were doing to an entirely different level. I wanted to create a night-out-on-the-town rather than an hour of watching me cook,” explains Bob. So he decided there was no reason why he couldn’t have his own class here in Charleston, stay close to family, and make a fun experience for visitors and locals. He recalls, “I found a place on Market Street and pulled the rest of it together. There wasn’t anything like this cooking class here—everything was more of a demonstration. It wasn’t interactive.” Bob is all about interaction—with the food, with the equipment, with the people. He always has a great time with all of his students, but his favorite classes are when four or five couples who have never met come in for a class. He states, “I just tell them to introduce themselves because I don’t know any of them and to grab an apron and a cutting board.” Often, they all leave with plans to see each other again for drinks or a golf date.

CH+D • Spring 2015
In the Kitchen with Chef Bob Waggoner is more than a fun, hands-on adventure to have on a night when you don’t want to stay in, though. Chef Bob instills confidence and openmindedness in the kitchen. “In every class I have someone who pulls me aside to tell me that he or she will be the worst student I’ve ever had. But I just say, ‘You watch, you’re going to be the best.’” And he’s right. Everyone exclaims at the end of the night that they had a blast, it was so easy, and they can’t wait to try the dishes at home. “It’s not about the recipe or whatever skill-level someone thinks he or she is. This class is about the empowering experience. And the wine,” he jokes. “This whole concept wouldn’t work without each of the contributors, or even my wife and daughter, who help with the everyday things like washing all the napkins and tablecloths,” reveals Bob. Friends from his years in France, a mutual acquaintance at Plugs Appliance Center, and contacts at Ferguson and SubZero were more than happy to donate items. Even TecGrill, who provided one of their top-of-theline grills, and Lexus, from whom he bought the magnificent self-playing piano, were eager to be part of Bob’s innovative idea. Now, Charleston Fine Cabinetry, who built the cabinets, uses the kitchen as a showroom in the mornings and Bob encourages his other contributors to do the same.
CH+D • Spring 2015

Each piece in his kitchen is his favorite for a different reason. He has three gas ranges (all by Wolf and donated by Plugs Appliance Center) about which he raves, “I’ve never had such a nice stove, not even in the restaurants and especially not at home. I love how accurate it is and its reaction time.” The wine cooler, donated by Sub Zero, is another favorite showroom feature. The different temperature levels are extremely important when storing different wines because whites shouldn’t be kept at the same temperature as reds, and reds shouldn’t be kept at the same temperature as champagnes. Since Bob is just as passionate about his love for wine as his love for cooking, he declares that the different vintages require accurate cooling methods, hence the need for an expertly crafted cellar. It’s not just the cooking experience (or the wine) that should draw you to Bob’s showroom, though. It’s the testrun. If you’re in the market for anything kitchen related, Bob’s showroom is the best place to see, touch, smell, hear, and even taste the results of the top names in the business. Does a Sub-Zero refrigerator have enough space? How does that Le Creuset pot feel in your hands? Do you actually need a high-end gas range? Bob’s kitchen is the place to find out. His advice? If you’re going to cut costs on something in a kitchen design, don’t do it on the range. “Or the self-playing piano,” he laughs. For more information, call In The Kitchen with Chef Bob Waggoner at (843) 619-7529 or visit chefbobwaggoner.com.
Contributors like East Coast Granite and Design, Plugs Appliance Center, Mepra Flatware, and Charleston Fine Cabinetry all benefit from the showroom with demonstrations of their products to current and potential clients.

The Insulsteel Promise Steve and Tina Bostic, owners of Amerisips Homes, have been getting a lot of attention in Charleston lately. The reason is simple—Insulsteel, a panel system that bolsters the strength of structural insulated panels (SIPs). Not only are the Insulsteel reinforced panels exceptionally strong and supportive, but they are also measured to perfection, easy to install, and create an environment that is the definition of eco-friendly. The Tides Adds New Luxury Condominiums The Tides, a high-end condominium community in Mt. Pleasant, is in the initial stages of adding a fourth tower to the waterfront property near the Ravenel Bridge. The project includes plans to add 55 more residences of one to four bedroom floor plans. Especially newsworthy is Jay Valk’s participation in the project. The owner of Classic Kitchens of Charleston is beyond excited to have the opportunity to work with The Tides to provide future residents with luxury kitchens that complement the entire project. For more information, call Classic Kitchens at (843) 991-4207 or visit classickitchensofcharleston.com.
Rally for MUSC’s Children’s Hospital During the month of February, the team at Sea Island Builders rallied behind the MUSC Children’s Hospital as part of the iHeartRadio Miracle Maker campaign. Their initial donation of $1,200 was just the start of their relationship with MUSC. For the whole month, every Facebook like that they generated prompted the company to send another dollar to the children’s hospital. Other local businesses, magazines, radio stations, and papers joined in the effort to spread the word about the fundraising initiative. Live Oak Design Studio Created to Accommodate Lowcountry Demand
According to Bill Huey and Daniel Beck of local residential-architecture firm Bill Huey & Associates, they have seen a rising need for a house-plans development company like the new Live Oak Design Studio. Many future homeowners hope to build a home that they love, but there’s currently not a lot of middle ground between pre-existing plans and a completely custom home. Because of how long it usually takes to design and build a custom home, many homeowners opt to pick a set of plans and customize a few things here and there, rather than starting from scratch. Live Oak Design Studio was created to offer the option of a semi-custom floor plan with a faster turn-over than custom renderings. So keep an eye out for a model home on Kiawah, plus a host of new plans that are remarkably customizable. For more information, call Live Oak Design Studio at (843) 259-2422 or visit liveoakdesignstudio.com.

Wicks and Wax By: Megan J. Busch
I
Anita Holly
knew I was in for a treat at Candlefish when I was greeted by gregarious redhead Anita Holly, who has a passion for the science—yes, science—of candle making. One rainy February day, Assistant Editor Erin Forbes, Graphic Designer Margaret Rambo, and I donned brown canvas aprons, divvied up our bottle of wine, and took our seats at an oversized butcher-block-topped candle-making table prepared for our course in scented candles. Before us, we found beakers, metal pitchers, rulers, wicks, and thermometers.
of Candlefish Candlefish houses one hundred different scents on site, all stored in amber apothecary jars and labeled with numbers. In a metal pitcher, exactly 16.2 ounces of wax are mixed with 1.8 ounces of oil to prevent separation between the two elements in the cooling process and to provide an appropriately potent fragrance. We allowed our aromatic wax to cool to just under 120 degrees so that when we poured it into our glasses, no bubbles formed. The candles cooled overnight and were ready to be picked up the next day.
To begin, Anita taught us about the wicks that we glued to the bottom of our glasses; they’re made of 100-percent cotton fibers, which burn cleanly and slowly. Then, we learned about the wax, a soy product that’s heated to exactly 190-degrees to allow scented oils (a combination of natural oils and extracts) to dissolve completely.
The Candlefish concept began with a vision from the local creators of Rewined candles, who wanted to develop a storefront concept that offered a candle-making experience as well as a shopping opportunity. The store hosts classes regularly for scented waxes, votives, pillars, and hurricanes, and stocks a selection of handcrafted candles from around the country. Of course, I couldn’t resist picking up a patchouli-and-tobaccoscented soy-wax candle by 419 Trading Co., a smallbatch enterprise based in Ohio. Eager to burn my own handmade Candlefish candles at home, I lit my Number 94 (which releases fragrances of grapefruit, lemon balm, and bergamot) and enjoyed the fresh, clean, summery aromas wafting through my house. For more information, visit candlefish.com, call (843) 371-1434, or shop at 71 Wentworth Street downtown.
