MEET + GREET

Primo Painter Since the early 2000s, Vladimir Silveira has been adding color throughout Charleston by painting beautiful custom homes. After coming to the Lowcountry to visit his sister from his homeland of Brazil in 2001, Vladimir fell in love with the area and decided to settle down and make it home. Over time, he has carved out a flourishing business here in his new country.

What brought you to Charleston? About 15 years ago my sister invited me to visit her. I was still living in Brazil then, but once I arrived, I fell in love with Charleston. I came just to check everything out and see her, but I ended up deciding to stay. How did you get into the painting business and eventually establish your own company? When I got here, I started working for another painting company. After two and a half years, my brother-in-law and I decided to start a business together; we did that for a few months, and then we went our own ways. From that opportunity though, I was able to start my own business and grow it. Now, I do about 90% residential work and the rest is commercial; of the residential work, most of what we work on is new construction custom homes. What can a client expect from you and VMS when they hire you? The first thing I do is have an honest conversation with the homeowner about the project and what we can do for them. I want our clients to be happy, so I come in with the

58

CH+D • Spring 2017

mindset that their house is my house. Next, I take what the customer tells me that they want and I do my absolute best to make it happen. For me, the most important thing is to have satisified clients who will come back again for future projects and recommend my services to other people. Lastly, I always do follow ups and will come back and fix any touch-ups your home might need. What paint trends do you see in the Lowcountry? I get asked this all of the time. I always try to help my customers with color trends and take into consideration their design styles, but I also emphsize that regardless of my opinion, the final decision should be what they like. To answer your question though, most of the homeowners I work with like a neutral color for the main living areas of a house and then room-by-room pick different colors like a pink for a daughter’s room or a blue for a son. A lot of people are going with light grays and cream for wall paint and for trim, people like to stick with white and off white. HE SAID / SHE SAID

The Ins and Outs of Selecting Floor Coverings Husband-and-wife team Rob and Kathy Bullock of Floor Coverings International of Charleston go head-to-head about today’s flooring options.

He Said:

She Said:

He Said: I prefer lighter colored hardwoods, for sure. They give the room a bright and open feel and bring in colors reminiscent of a warm sunset or sunny fall day. Lighter colors also are much better at hiding dust, dirt, and even minor surface scratches and normal wear and tear.

Hardwood Flooring: Dark or Light?

She Said: Dark hardwood flooring adds richness to a room. Many people think dark floors will make a room look too small, but the overall perception of a room is the combination of the colors on both the floor and the walls. Lighter wall colors are trending right now, too, so you can't go wrong with the contrast of a dark hardwood floor.

He Said: Many of the newer styles feature a degree of texture to the floor’s surface. From wire-brushing to heavy handscraping, this texture adds depth to the floors and, in the case of handscraping and chiseling, does a great job of hiding unintended dents and deeper scratches that can be incurred over time.

Smooth Finish or Handscraped Hardwood Floors?

She Said: I love a smooth, even finish on hardwood floors of just about any color. This type of finish will never go out of style. As a more traditional look, it will age gracefully over time and doesn’t require as much maintenance as people often assume, in terms of refinishing or polishing.

He Said: Unless you suffer from severe allergies, I love the coziness of carpeting that good, durable fibers like Anso Nylon or New Zealand wool bring to a bedroom. Carpet keeps noise from traveling throughout the house better than a hard surface floor, and it’s warm and soft underfoot when you step out of bed in the morning!

60

CH+D • Spring 2017

Carpet or Hardwood in Bedrooms?

She Said: I prefer the look and continuity that installing hardwoods in the bedrooms brings to the entire home when they extend in from the living areas and hallways. Hardwoods also give you flexibility to change the décor of a bedroom by using area rugs to coordinate or contrast with the overall aesthetic design of the room.

HIDDEN TREASURE

Infusing your home with charm can involve many different options. Crown moulding, mosaic tile floors, and wallpaper are a few of the bigger, more permanent decisions. Try mixing in gorgeous bits of antique glass into your décor for character that can be easily moved and rearranged. Add a splash of color to your shelves or spice up your bar with vintage glass pieces. Whether you find true Depression Glass or if you’ve tracked down a relic from an old soda shop, placing those pieces in your home exhibits your personal style and an appreciation for the past.

Camille Wish of Terrace Oaks Antiques Local collectors and travelers alike have been flocking to Charleston’s first antique mall ever since it opened in 1988. Camille Wish, who has owned and operated the mall since 2005, has always had an eye for special collections and a desire to share beautiful pieces with the world. Be it antique jewelry, wartime keepsakes, sports memorabilia, or authentic French furniture, Camille and her team keep a carefully curated assembly of

1

In the entryway, Camille has displayed an antique black gateleg table with two collectible pictures of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels overhead, one of which is a portrait of her previous Cavalier, Daisy. The picture on the table is of her great grandfather, Charles Wish, who is holding her grandfather, Merrill Wish. The picture, she says, serves as a reminder of her roots.

2

The dining room is home to what is probably Camille’s most sentimental collection—her godmother’s Staffordshire “Iris” flow blue china, which is circa 1880. The sterling napkin rings and goblets are also family pieces. Flower vases and other centerpieces are surrounded by a silver plate tea service given to her great grandmother in the 1900’s.

3

One of Camille’s favorite aspects of being a collector are the stories that happen in the process of discovering new items and the history of the items themselves; like the time she stopped in the middle of traffic to buy a pair of gold gilt angel wings, that are now exhibited on the mantle. The “black glass” vases with enamel painting are circa 1860, and the glass is actually purple, not black.

4

Camille’s piano is also styled with a fun find she discovered, which was a piece of sheet music that dates back to the 1860’s and is all in the original composer’s hand writing. She had this piece framed to preserve the paper as well as display both sides of the hand-written music. For more information, call Terrace Oaks Antiques at (843) 795-9689, visit terraceoaksantiques.com, or stop in to shop at 2037 Maybank Highway on James Island.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON The Craftspeople: Debbie and Scott Burriss

The Craft:

The SwivelSwing, invented in South Carolina by Debbie and her husband, Scott, is a ceiling attachment that a porch swing is hung from in order to enjoy views and swing while facing any direction.

The Backstory:

When Debbie and Scott couldn’t decide on which direction to hang their new porch swing, they gave it some thought. They wanted to be able to look out at the water in their backyard; they needed to watch their children play in the side yard; and they desired to face a third direction (which was the seating area on the porch) so that they could easily interact with guests. Since no standard porch swing has the capability to turn on its hooks, Scott, (who is an engineer) solved their “directional dilemma.” By combining a stationary and rotating steel bar and attaching it to the ceiling, the first SwivelSwing, was created. The bench swing’s chains were hooked on the ends and the swing was then able to rotate in a full circle so that all three views could be enjoyed. Since then, SwivelSwing has been enhanced to allow for 36 locking positions that secure it in place and still provide the swinging motion loved by porch dwellers.

The Process:

The SwivelSwing was invented right here in South Carolina, and is a sturdy combination of powder-coated steel to withstand the elements and an ingenius turnstile system. The simplicity of the swivel comes from the chain that hangs from the center to allow the adjustable bar to move. Whether you’re trying to enjoy the marsh views or swing along with a gentle breeze, simply pull the chain and push the swing around until you’ve found just the right spot. SwivelSwing can turn 360 degrees in either direction, so you’ll never miss an angle for any of those idyllic, porchsitting days.

For more information, call SwivelSwing at (843) 991-2345 or visit swivelswing.com.

One sure way to ruin the ambiance of a lovely evening is to experience an inundation of tiny pests like mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. For an option to alleviate, or even eliminate, this yearround Lowcountry problem, try searching for an eco-friendly, pest-killing system. One such choice would be the MosquitoNix Green misting system. This 100% eco-friendly solution composed of all natural ingredients, such as cedar and peppermint oil as well as clove extract, is not only effective in ridding mosquitoes, ticks and fleas, but it is also safe to use around pets and children. Another bonus to this state-of-the-art MosquitoNix Green system is that it is nearly invisible to the eye and releases a subtle and natural fragrance. One way to dramatically minimize a storm’s impact is to consider louvered garage doors. Unlike most garage doors, Overhead Door Company’s aluminum doorframes and louvered boards allow for floodwater to escape, preventing the doors from damming up and blowing out. This means that homeowners no longer need to raise their garage doors just to release the trapped water, which poses a risk to the whole structure of the home. Energy One America

Michael Greer Pools

If a person already has insulation or siding installed, are they still a good candidate for spray foam insulation?

What are some steps to making pools as maintenance free as possible?

Anybody can be a candidate for the most part, unless you have completely vaulted ceilings. When I come into a home, I typically go straight to the attic because that’s where you’ll get the most bang for your buck. That’s where you get all of the radiant heat coming in from the roof. It’s the air entering from the outside through the soffits and going up to the ridge that affects the rest of the air in your house. That air that comes in will travel throughout your home through interior walls all the way from your crawl space to your attic creating what is known as the stack effect. We want to stop as much of the air penetration to your home as possible. Spray foaming your attic underneath of the roof sheathing and closing off the soffits will encapsulate it, bringing it to a very comfortable condition, and giving you better energy efficiency. For more information, call Energy One America at (843) 388-6260 or visit energyoneamerica.com.

Creating a low-maintenance pool is a definite possibility, especially with today’s technology. I’m the exclusive dealer for Paramount’s PVR3 in-floor cleaning and re-circulation system; this is the latest technology in in-floor cleaning. I’m working with UV and ozone options to cut down or even eliminate the use of chlorine. We are trying to do everything we can to minimize the impact of chlorine on a pool system. We would like to focus on UV and Ozone as being the primary sanitizer while making salt our backup system; this is truly the best of both worlds. The way homeowners can check their pool water is becoming easier as well. Gone are the 'old-timey' liquid test kits. Now the pool owner can use a single test strip to determine their chemistry readings in one simple fashion.

Outdoor Lighting Perspectives

How energy efficient and “green” oriented are lighting systems and are retrofitting options available to help a homeowner in that regard? The systems we use to illuminate the front and landscape features of your home are incredibly energy efficient because we use LED lighting systems. For example, a home can run a 60-light system and only see an increase of about $.50 on their power bill per month at the most even if they are running it from dusk until dawn every day. That same system using halogen bulbs instead of LED ones at the same rate of usage would cost somebody around $10-$15. If a homeowner wants to go green, he or she can look into updating any system through our company; it is better for energy efficiency and savings to upgrade to LED in the long run. Our team can clean and upgrade an existing system regardless as to whether or not we originally installed it. It’s one of my pleasures to go into a system and really clean it up and make it look beautiful again. INDUSTRY PROFILES

Building Blocks

Company: Nautilus Company Credentials: Bill Payzant has lived his whole life on the coast and has worked in the home construction industry for his entire career. Bill founded the Nautilus Company in 2010 and assembled a knowledgeable team with decades of construction experience. Among other awards, the company won the Prism Award in 2015 for exceptional craftsmanship.

What were some of the requirements that the homeowners had for this space? The homeowners wanted a legacy home that was a long-term investment. They wanted to utilize newer technology to create a home that was lower maintenance and energy efficient. To accomplish this, we incorporated numerous features including low maintenance materials like composite decking and an efficient, high-tech air filter.

What are your favorite elements of this house?

My favorite elements of this house are the main living area and all of the attention to detail that was put into it. We built the kitchen and living area so there would be a fluidity between indoor and outdoor living. The alignment in this room is very precise—most people won’t notice this level of detail, but I do and I require it in all of my homes.

What were some of the challenges that you overcame throughout this project? Building in the coastal climate, moisture and humidity always present a challenge. This project was especially difficult because we started lot clearing during Charleston's historic flooding in October of 2015. It was critically important that we protect the site and all of the materials.

How does this home reflect the work of Nautilus Company? We are not just building a house; we are building your home. This home is a great example of the details that we believe make a truly exceptional home—from the alignment and spacing of the outlets to the custom-built oven hood the homeowner envisioned. We want homeowners to be wowed every time they enter their house; this is what makes a Nautilus home. For more information, call Nautilus Company at (843) 647-6224 or visit nautilusco.com.

Architects + Archetypes

Company: Swallowtail Architecture Credentials: Rachel Burton has been an architect her entire adult life, but she never thought she would be designing buildings. Her first love was landscape architecture. Fortunately, she discovered her passion for structures. She settled in South Carolina in 2001, where she began her own architectural design firm.

During this remodel, what vision did you and the homeowners work together to accomplish? The homeowners and I wanted to maximize the views and provide better access to the elevated pool and outdoor pavilion. Before the renovation, the rooms all faced inward, despite how the shape of the house wrapped around the pool. In addition, our goal was to undertake an overall renovation to better meet the needs of modern family living by creating a large dining room and updating the kitchen, and we also worked together to craft a master suite with luxurious textures that contains a spa-like bathroom.

What were some of the challenges you faced when redesigning this home?

Renovations come with a unique set of challenges. One main obstacle is that you have an existing home that will require upgrading, as well as repairs; because the home is finished, it is impossible to know the full extent of those repairs until you start the construction process. We worked with the builder to establish a reasonable budget before we began, and then reviewed the situation on site when any repairs became apparent. This home is a prime example of finding that sweet spot of balancing the budget, meeting the homeowners’ goals, and creating an elegantly functional, island home.

What are the most unique features of this home? The biggest feature of this home is the new dining room, created out of an unused porch. The new dining room allows the homeowners to gather the family and share a meal together. In addition, the large storefront windows provide a view throughout the home, from the front door as well as the living room, which fully integrates the indoor and outdoor living spaces. Since then, she has worked as a consultant to designers and has been exposed to everything from historic preservation to financial planning. After 23 years of design experience, she opened her own full-service design studio here in Charleston in 2006.

Why was it important to hire an interior designer for this project? There are so many reasons to hire a designer. Most people have some idea of what they don’t like. However, very few clients have ideas about what they do like. I spend a lot of time asking questions because I want to give clients a stylish room, but also a room that is uniquely about them. It’s funny, when my work is photographed, I don’t see the rooms; I see the clients. I believe my work should result in a room that reflects my amazing clients, not me.

What is your favorite feature of this master suite?

My favorite feature of the master suite is the stunning lacquered green walls. They are gorgeous in sunlight, lamplight, and even on a cloudy day. They have a depth of color that is unique to a lacquered finish. Suzanne Allen created the finish from a color I found that reminded me of walks in the woods. The owner loves to hike and explore nature, and this color is reminiscent of being in a deep forest with the sunlight streaming in through the trees above.

How can quality interior design help homeowners stay organized and prevent costly mistakes? Designers can save you so many headaches! We anticipate and solve problems before they develop. Whether it is scheduling, procurement, installations, color selections, budgeting, or design choices, we are able to coordinate the processes and make decisions so homeowners can go about their daily life and come home to a finished, polished space created just for them. A

fter living in their Park West home for many years, these homeowners decided it was time for a change. Once they realized that Awendaw’s farm town vibe felt like home to them, they began building a new house for their growing family. Using the neighboring horses for inspiration, the couple set out to build their dream luxury farmhouse. When Shannan Payne Preston, ALA Lighting Specialist from Carolina Lanterns & Lighting, got wind that her friend was looking to create a new home for her and her family, she immediately wanted to help. “Shannan was with me from the beginning of the process,” adds the homeowner. “From

the initial planning she worked with me. Since I already basically knew what I wanted, Shannan tried throughout the process to get everything that I needed.” This dynamic planning duo took to modern communication to make the process of finding the perfect inspiration for each space of the house easier. “Once we started brainstorming and doing the initial electrical design, we immediately started sharing Pinterest boards. This outlet allowed us to create various boards for the project and share back and forth concepts and ideas,” explains Shannan. She and the homeowner went through the showroom initially and developed a starting plan. From there, they gleaned more

ideas and shared pictures on Pinterest boards and either found the product that they desired or had it made. The meticulous focus on the lighting plan of this home helped to drive the “Lowcountry rustic, shabby chic, and slightly French farmhouse” look that the homeowner strove for with this property. In every room, hallway, and entrance in this Awendaw abode, the attention to detail with the lighting scheme is evident. Immediately upon pulling up into the extended driveway, classic gas lamps, which blend seamlessly with the aesthetics, greet you and light the way. H

ailing from an area in Colorado that is nearly 2,000 miles away from the Lowcountry, one Daniel Island homeowner sought to create her own slice of paradise around her family’s new home when it was time to move. Once she had her blueprints in hand, she revisited JR Kramer of REMARK Landscape Architecture, whom she had met at Charleston Home + Design’s home show on Daniel Island several months before. JR and his team at REMARK worked with the homeowner to plan a landscape that was both aesthetically pleasing and balanced with Daniel Island’s microclimate. “Our first conversation was a fun

one, because even though she had a list of plants she wanted to incorporate, most won’t grow in the Lowcountry. We worked beyond that to find a great balance of her contemporary, Coloradowestern style with native species and even a few nonnative, non-invasive plants,” explains JR. As a landscape architect, one of the most important parts of JR’s designs is incorporating indigenous plants that thrive in Charleston, as well as maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. “Just putting plants in the ground can be detrimental to the plant and the overall microclimate,” says JR. Once the visual goal was established, JR and his team

had a blast creating a unique landscape. He adds, “We pretty much had creative free reign, so we put our thinking caps on to blend the landscapes with the hardscapes for a seamless overall picture.” They drew plans for a special driveway that is separated into a geometric design by dark pebbles, then merged that visual with sprawling muhly grass. A walkway with modern retaining walls and a similar geometric scheme leads from the driveway up to the front stoop.

For this project in particular, JR’s challenges included choosing plants that deer wouldn’t destroy, that would create a contemporary visual to meet the homeowner’s request, and that would flourish on Daniel Island. One special element that JR and the homeowner loved was the giant agave plant that serves as a design anchor and makes a big statement. Together, they also chose several varieties of non-invasive plants that are not native to Charleston, like the aza-

ith so many choices on the market these days for furnishing a child’s room, the process can be just as much fun as you thought, but a lot more work that you expected. Inevitably there comes that day, not too far in the future, when your son or daughter outgrows the décor that you so painstakingly selected for them. These reasons and more are why Maxtrix Kids Rooms has designed a one-stop furniture shop for parents of toddlers and teens alike. The company, Maxtrix Kids Rooms (and its parent company Maxwood Furniture), began over a decade ago in New York, but owners Stephen and Anne Jensen decided they wanted to escape the cold and brought the company here to Charleston. One Daniel Island couple, in particular, was beyond thrilled by that decision when they discovered the long-lasting ben-

efits of choosing a Maxtrix system for their children. “Our beds alone have over 22,000 different configurations and combinations,” explains Anne. “We like to describe them as LEGO pieces because each part of the bed, and the accessories for it fit together seamlessly for an effortless look that any kid can enjoy. The whole system is adjustable over time, so it also grows with your son or daughter to evolve with their changing needs.” These Daniel Island parents (with the input of their children) chose two very different styles of the same system for their kids’ respective rooms. In the boys’ room, a chestnut finish with blue and red bedding creates the idea of young adults. that NHance utilizes when refinishing cabinets and hardwood floors, the time and work the homeowners had to put in was minimal. “The process we use, in reality, is one dentists and manicurists have been using for years and we have adapted and transformed it into something that homeowners can benefit from,” explains Ben. The UV curing finish is hit with a bright light to instantly cure it after the finish dries for approximately 90 minutes. With a significantly reduced downtime, often homeowners can get back to using their home

as normal within the same day. For this particular Lowcountry project, a good chunk of time was put into prep work and attention to detailing. “When I came to look at the cabinets for the first time, the previous owner had painted them over top of something, which made the situation worse,” describes Ben. “We had to strip all of that off and start over. It was a lengthy process, but the end product came out phenomenal.” In this home, the homeowners and Ben worked together to pick colors that

would work best for this project. Since all four pieces that NHance refinished were within eyesight of each other, careful consideration had to go into effect. “When you look through the window that leads from the kitchen into the living room, you can see the entertainment center and kitchen cabinets all at once and it becomes a cohesive look. Before, the entertainment center was a knotty pine with a rustic feel, but it didn’t match with the rest of the house,” Ben points out. “By changing it to a contemporary white color, we extended the style into the future.”

The UV curing process allowed homeowners to use so much white without the fear of yellowing. With thousands of colors to choose from and many natural wood shades, finding a hue to blend with your home shouldn’t be a problem; the only problem might be narrowing down your choices with so many quality options!v

Smart & Stylish Storage Two Ravenel homeowners called on Lowcountry Monkey Bars to help them with a much-desired organization system in their new home’s garage.

H

ow often does the average American homeowner clean out their garage? When he or she trips over a stray toy or baseball bat? Maybe once every spring? In many cases, garages are the most neglected room of the house, though the reasons vary from homeowner to homeowner. Christine Garland and her husband declared enough to more garage chaos when they recently purchased their home in Ravenel. Both agreed that the garage was the first step in keeping everything organized during the move and afterward. Chris Cobb, of Lowcountry Monkey Bars, was her first point of con-

the garage. “It’s a question most people don’t really consider until I ask them,” Chris explains. “But it’s the most important part of determining which components of the Monkey Bars system will create the most functional environment for the homeowners.”

Chris and the team at Monkey Bars joined forces with the professionals at Carolina Flooring Specialists to finish the floors with their signature showroom-style, industrial-grade, polymer floor. From there, Chris worked with Christine to figure out how she and her husband planned to use

weather at bay and children safe from dangerous chemicals. The Garlands selected a practical combination for their lifestyle. First was the organization of their long-term storage items, which are stowed in bins on the top shelves and don't need to be frequently accessed. Then, they styled a system for the more every-day items like bikes, garden tools, and even a small, separate system for fishing rods.

With such a simple, clean storage system, Christine and her husband won’t ever have to cringe or put on battle gear before entering their garage. They can both rest easy, knowing there’s a place for everything and everything will be in its place. v

Bountiful Benefits Clearing out and encapsulating your oft forgotten crawlspace yields significant results, like in the case of this Mt. Pleasant homeowner who saw significant improvements in her health after the pros at All Pro Crawlspace Solutions came to the rescue.

ome problems in your home tend to be easier to ignore than others. Updating bathroom vanity lights or swapping out a few outdated pillows are issues that can wait. The imperfect parts of your house that yield negative impacts on your health cannot be evaded, however. Not long after Pat Broeghamer moved into her new home in October of 2013, her physical well being began to deteriorate and she was suffering from chronic sinus infections. After returning home after a weeklong trip, Pat and her husband were overwhelmed by an inexplicable musty smell and knew that their doctor’s theories of environmental problems causing her health troubles must be true. The couple called in All Pro Crawlspace Solutions for a consultation. “When they heard my story,

Here in the Lowcountry, moisture is a common problem for many homeowners and a crawlspace is one of the most common places humidity can be trapped. This typically two to four-foot-tall space underneath some houses contains much of the home’s functional processes, like plumbing, and is often filled with standard insulation. It was in that insulation that most of Pat’s problems were hiding.

Pat isn’t the only homeowner who has felt better after having her home’s crawlspace cleared and encapsulated. She and other homeowners have sought the benefits of this process. “It is an investment in your house as well as in your health. After we are done, we have a lot of homeowners call us and tell us how much better their allergies and breathing in general have become since we worked on their home,” adds Jeremy. “In addition, this is aesthetically pleasing and acts as another piece of curb appeal.”v

Once Patricia Altschul decided to get back to her southern roots, she set her sights on the Isaac Jenkins Mikell House. Find out more about this dynamic woman and the work that went into renovating her downtown Charleston mansion.

Story by Laura Jones | Photography by Patrick Brickman & Colin Grey Voigt

“Michael, it’s time for my medicine,” or “One cannot drink cheap wine in the heat,” represent only two of the many verbal gems that turned Patricia Altschul into a breakout star on Bravo’s Southern Charm. Long before her son, Whitney Sudler-Smith, created and produced the show that brought her wit to the masses, Patricia garnered a lot of respect and attention throughout the art world as well as many New York social circles and philanthropic realms. After concluding that the New York weather could no longer be tolerated, Patricia decided to move back down south and return to her roots. She purchased an 1854 home, which once served as the Charleston Free Library for nearly 30 years, that felt like the perfect place to settle into her new life in Charleston. From the second Patricia blessed my television screen with her presence on Southern Charm, I put her on a pedestal. After sitting down and talking with her, I realized I was all wrong; the pedestal needed to be taller and needed a chintz-covered royal thrown on top of it for her to relax in while she sipped a martini. Her status hasn’t risen in my mind after seeing her lifestyle first hand; she elevated to a new level after sharing much of her life story, her successes, and experiencing how humble and kind she is. Patricia, and of course her butler Michael and pack of precious pups, were gracious enough to give a few of us at Charleston Home + Design magazine a personal tour of her downtown home and answer many questions about how she became the woman that she is today.

Charleston Charmer

I’m so excited to hear that you are a fellow Richmond, Virginia native. I’d love to hear about your life growing up in the Commonwealth. My life in Virginia was like elsewhere in the 1950s. It was like Happy Days, Leave it to Beaver, or Father Knows Best. We would walk to places at night. We shopped in iconic Richmond department stores like Miller & Rhoads and Thalheimers. We would eat in the tearoom. Ladies and gentlemen would wear gloves. Montaldo’s was there, which was a very fancy dress shop. I

120

CH+D • Spring 2017

remember when I was 16 or 17 my parents let me get a black dress for a party and I felt like the most sophisticated person in the world because nobody at that age had a dress from there. I don’t know why my parents let me, but I felt like a siren in my black dress. Of course, with it, I wore Mary Janes, pearls, and little white gloves.

over the city and went to Byrd Park. It was very relaxed, easy, fun, and safe. It was the last age of innocence in the 50s. It was nice growing up in Richmond.

All of that sounds so quintessentially Richmond!

It started when I went to St. Catherine’s for just a minute. My parents quickly did not approve of St. Catherine’s. I came home one day and my parents asked me what I learned at school that

Oh, yes! Very Richmond and I loved growing up there. We rode bicycles all

I’ve read that education has been an important part of your life. Can you tell us a little bit more of how that track got started for you?

day and I told them that I learned how to pour tea and we had elocution. There was very little academic concern at that school so my parents then enrolled me at Marymount. French nuns, who were very tough academically, ran this school and I was there until I graduated in the eighth grade. For high school, I was sent away to a Quaker boarding school. Also, I always went to riding camp in the Shenandoah Mountains.

That sounds like a great educational foundation. How did that impact you as you later went on to George Washington University? The Quaker boarding school and French nuns gave me such a good education. I was studying physics, architectural history, and I had learned some Russian, so that by the time I got to George Washington (GW) I studied very hard,

but it was easy for me. I graduated cum laude and I got a Smithsonian fellowship. I worked for Decorative Arts in the History and Technology Building. That started my love for the decorative arts as well as art history. While at GW, I earned a master’s degree in both Art History and Archaeology. Oh, and I was married the entire time I was doing all of this. I got married when I was 20.

(left) Careful craftsmanship went into this home renovation. Hand painted floors were one of Patricia’s must haves when putting her personal touch on this house. This hand painted work can be seen in the faux marbling on the walls as well. (above) Patricia’s drawing rooms showcase many of her thoughtfully curated pieces of artwork and have been specifically staged and styled by her interior designer.

How did you balance being a wife and being so successful and ambitious as a student? My husband [L. Hayes Smith], who was about five years older, was already successful when I married him. He was the head of Dun & Bradstreet and had earned his MBA. I did a lot of the case studies for his business. At this time, I was in my academic period and I loved it. I had a good time doing everything. In addition, I had two houses that I ran. I did so by having other people manage everything so I could study. When it comes to domestic arts, I know how to do everything, and you can’t really run a house if you don't personally know how things should be done, but I was not domestic. I still don’t like to cook. I can, but I don’t like to. Sitting here in your stunning home, it is clear that you have

wonderful taste. How did your education in art history and time at GW influence your design style and you in general? The study influenced which periods of art I liked. I found that I liked the 19th century, up until 1960. When I started teaching at GW, they gave me the introductory courses, because I was still in graduate school. First, I was given all of the freshmen who were required to take Art 101, and then I taught the Survey of Western Art. After I taught for a while, they gave me Contemporary Art, which ended with the 60s, because well, we were in the 60s. Andy Warhol was kind of the end of contemporary art. It didn't go any farther. After teaching for so many years, I founded a company called Arcadia, Inc. I worked with a scholar and we were

given the opportunity to build a collection of American, late 19th century art. My job was to go around to all of the different auctions, art galleries, and private dealers here and in Europe to find the paintings for this particular collection. After a while, other collectors and museums came to me to find things for them as well. That sounds exciting and like a lot of fun. I know you didn’t keep this business going long-term. Did you have it when you transitioned to New York? No, I remarried in 1989. I was living with my husband on his motor yacht and we went all over the world on that. I lost contact with people in the art world, and if you don’t keep up with it, you lose it. At the time, the Japanese were buying French Im-

pressionists and that wasn’t my specialty, so I was happy for a rest. Whitney was away studying at that point; I think he was at Oxford when I got married. So, I basically closed down the company when I remarried. I was always on the board and I always looked for pieces for other people, but I just didn’t have a formal organization. I’m sure letting go of the dayto-day business must’ve been difficult, but at least you were able to still stay involved in the art community. After stepping back, how did you dive back in again? Well, I still kept up with my field and stayed involved more with that end. I continued to go to the auctions and would still buy and sell things at auction. I remarried [Arthur Altschul] in 1996. He was on the board of every major museum in New York. He actually started the Whitney Museum with Flora Biddle Whitney. He started almost all of the organizations at the Metropolitan

124

CH+D • Spring 2017

Museum and he was always listed as one of the top 20 collectors in the United States. It was a great education for me and we had that in common. The years that we were together, we were all over the place going to auctions. It wouldn't matter if it was Grosvenor House in London or a flea market; he was always on the hunt and it was great and really fun. I learned a lot from him. That sounds like such an exciting life. You’ve said that you spent a lot of time at art auctions. What are they like and what sort of bidder are you? Are you ever an impulsive purchaser? It’s funny you ask, because I bought something at auction while they were filming Southern Charm this season and I don’t know if they are going to use it or not. Anyway, you have to know what you’re doing when you bid at auction. I, first of all, have a definite taste of things that I like and collect. When I see

something that I like, I call the auction house and speak to the curator of that department and I get a condition report and have a discussion about it. If I’m not in the place wherever I’m bidding, I do a phone bid, where they call me and I bid over the phone.

and if you’re southern, it just kind of gets in your blood for whatever reason. So, I started looking. I had a great big house on Long Island, and it was wonderful in the summer, but in the winter it was cold and blustery and snowy and friends didn’t necessarily want to go out there.

So it’s safe to say that impulse buying is not your style?

It took me three years to find this house. I drove all over the south, or I would fly to various places with Mario Buatta, my decorator. We looked at various houses and, for whatever reason nothing felt right until we found this house and it just gelled. I had been down here to Charleston three times before to look at other houses, but I would drive by this one and tell the realtor that this is the type of house I’m looking for. So, when it came on

No. Well, at the grocery store, yes, but not at the auction house. I have gone over estimate before though. What made you want to move back down south? After Arthur died I lived in New York for six more years, but I missed the south

the market I bought it immediately; I didn’t have any reservations. Was your son, Whitney, always on board with your move to the Lowcountry? [Laughs] People think Whitney lives with his mother wherever she is, but that is not the case. He has lived in L.A. since he graduated from college, so he would come and visit. I had an apartment in New York City for a while that he used more than I did. He likes it here, but he really lives and works in L.A. I know you loved this house even before you stepped inside, but what drew you to the Holy City?

Charleston Charmer I think Charleston is the most beautiful American city that we have. With the architecture, the gardens, the ambiance, the people, the food, and being that close to the water, it has everything. I totally understand why it’s number one in the world. My New York friends, when I moved down here, thought it was all Honey Boo Boo and Gator Boys, because they had never been to the South. It amazed me because they had been to Burma and the Outer Hebrides, but never down south. So, when they came down to visit, they couldn’t get over how beautiful and sophisticated it was. Initially they said, “You’re going to be down there with earthquakes and hurricanes.” Since then, they have had two major hurricanes in New York. Over the years you’ve taken on several large home renovations and completed a lot of redecorating. Tell us a little bit about some of those endeavors and how you got started with Mario Buatta.

I understand that you frequently turn to Mario, but would you say that there is a lot of your personal style in this home as well? In the beginning of the remodel, I had an architect, Louis Graeber, and Mario who would come down every couple of months to work, and I also had Richard Marks Restoration, who was here everyday with 15 men. I came down from New York and put everything in storage and I was here with just my bed and a little table and chairs set. Michael then brought his stuff down and moved into the cottage. So, if they were working in one room, my bed was moved to other end of the house, so I just moved around based on where they were. I was here nearly every day and had my hand in everything. For the construction part, I corrected certain things or added ideas that I liked that weren’t in the original plans. For example, my library was their kitchen.

When you were restoring When I married Arthur, I this house, how much of lived in Washington and the history of the property had a decorator. When I moved to New York, Arthur understood that Richard Marks was a member since three other wives had of The Historic Charleston decorated his apartment Foundation, so he knew expreviously, I would want actly what we could do and to redecorate it. folding here for four months because the marbling goes all the way up the stairs and down the hall. There were three people here doing the painting. It’s very pretty. They did a good job. When you want to relax, what is your favorite room to retreat to? It depends on what I’m doing; I use the whole house. It looks like a big house, but every room is used. I entertain here [the drawing room], and when I’m on the house phone I go in the morning room. A lot of times when I’m reading, I’ll go in the library and have a cocktail in there. After dinner people go in there and have after dinner drinks and Whitney’s friends smoke cigars in there. I’ve done some research on your collection of silhouettes that line the painted stairway; I understand you’ve inherited some, but could you tell me a little about that collection?

128

CH+D • Spring 2017

Yes, I did inherit some, and Arthur and I bought quite a few in our travels. It’s hard to find silhouettes that are more sophisticated; a lot of them are crudely done. Most of mine are European, and they’re reverse painting or cut silhouettes and some are on concave glass. I have one of George Washington that was the only one he actually sat for. There is also a Robert E. Lee silhouette that my second husband, who was a direct descendant, gave to me. I’ve gathered a lot of interesting ones. It’s kind of a fun thing because most people don’t collect them or care about them. One was made of Whitney, but he won’t let me hang it. The work you’ve done on this home is stunning and you’ve filled it with museum quality pieces. What is next for you?

A lot. I’m always busy and looking for more things to do. Currently we are filming Southern Charm, so that is taking up a bit of time. I’ve started a caftan line, one of which I’m wearing now, that will be launching soon. That whole endeavor is all very exciting. I’ve recently written a book that will be coming out in the near future, too. It’s titled “The Art of Southern Charm” and is a fun lifestyle guide.

STYLISH S H A D E S Windows can be one of the most beautiful architectural elements in a home and the treatments that cover them should be just as special. These Lowcountry homeowners have installed stunning coverings to help showcase the spectacular views.

SCIENCE MEETS STYLE AUTOMATED SHADES, LIGHTING CONTROL & SAVANT HOUSE This high-tech beach house’s automation capabilities make this home-away-from-home even better. With careful planning between the pros at Audio Warehouse, the design team at Anderson Studios, and RM Buck Builders, the Lutron brand window treatments and respective technologies were integrated and concealed seamlessly. A wall-mounted keypad or mobile device can automatically control all of the shades and lights locally or remotely. In fact, when these homeowners are ready to leave, with the push of a button, they can put their home in “Away Mode” by closing all shades, turning off all of the lights, and setting the HVAC to desired levels. For the automated shades, the color, fabric type, mounting options, and controls can all be customized. The colors chosen in this home help to enhance the ambiance of the space without distracting from the architectural design and interior styling.

TIMELESS TREATMENTS PLANTATION SHUTTERS & WOVEN WOODEN ROMAN SHADES With the Lowcountry’s abundant natural beauty, many people are hesitant to dive too deep into window treatments, but there are options that will help protect your home from UV rays and block the light while still allowing the gorgeous vistas to be seen. In this coastalchic home, the homeowners opted for a louvered plantation shutter with a hidden tilt to do just that. The hidden tilt rod in conjunction with having just one panel per window yields a modern look with minimal obstruction of the sights. When more privacy and darkness were desired in some rooms, Best Buy Blinds worked with the homeowners to have custom, woven wooden Roman shades with privacy liners installed. The classic styling of these window coverings along with the minimal sight impact will help to keep this “shabby chic beach house” in vogue for years to come.

SUPERB SHUTTERS LOCALLY SOURCED PLANTATION SHUTTERS This modern Lowcountry beach house has been outfitted with a range of custom window treatments. One quintessentially southern example was the installation of custom plantation shutters. The shutters came from locally sourced North American hardwood and were given a custom finish to match the home’s aesthetic. The side-hinge setup allows for homeowners to maximize the sights outside while having the option of increased privacy. In other areas of this home, natural, woven Roman shades and high-tech cellular shades were installed to complement the traditional nature of the shutters.

CUSTOM & COASTAL CUSTOM COVERINGS & TECHNOLOGICAL INTEGRATION Each room in this Isle of Palms home received special attention to ensure that the style and function were both precise for each space. In this game room, Designer Screen Roller shades give the homeowners coverage at the push of a button because of its automation capabilities. Many homes opt for this product because it provides UV protection from the sun without completely blocking out the view. A variety of opacity levels help homeowners pick the right level of shading that best meets their needs. When using this product with the Power View technology, homeowners can adjust the shades from a smartphone, remote, or tablet. This whole home received custom window treatments in a range of Lowcountry styles.

FUNCTIONAL FABRICS FABRICS, DRAPERY HARDWARE & FABRICATION The window treatments of this Lowcountry home were used to help block the sun as well as tie in design elements not only in each room, but to connect all pieces throughout the home. In this master bedroom, specific choices were made. Decorative blackout panels help to keep the sun’s bright light at bay, while the subtle pattern complements the pillows and accent colors of the space. Traverse rods were used during the installation of the panel to make using the opaque shades as easy as possible. Underneath the panels, simple wooden blinds have been placed for the homeowner to allow light to shine in while maintaining a level of privacy. Keeping function and color in the forefront of planning brought this home’s design together.

CLASSIC COVERINGS PLANTATION SHUTTERS Traditional charm radiates in this Downtown Charleston home. Classic, white plantation shutters give homeowners the option to block out the light while maintaining a timeless aesthetic to coordinate with the look of their home. Throughout this room, the same custom-created shutters have been used to provide a unified presentation; the floor-toceiling window and the smaller accompanying windows all feature the same paneling. The customizable product met the needs of this family perfectly. In order to enjoy the sunlight without having to worry about glare or UV rays damaging their home’s interior, they chose a sheer fabric that is protective while not obstructive. The fascia-free design, meaning that no visible wires, screws, or fasteners are used, blends in with the modern beach house aesthetic seamlessly. No bulky shade boxes or long cords disrupt the lovely views. As with other products from this company, this particular style can be operated both manually or electronically. Family members can adjust the shades with their smartphone, a handheld remote, or even a wall-mounted keypad.

he days of carpeted bathrooms, fiberglass showers, and wallpapered walls are a thing of the past! One of the biggest changes we have seen in bathrooms is the curbless walk-in shower. It's easy to clean, user friendly for all ages, and so stylish! Move over formica and even granite.....quartz is the new best thing in bathroom countertops! With all of

the lotions, soaps, and heated hair devices, bathroom countertops take a beating. Quartz resists stains and abrasions and even keeps out bacteria that can lodge in many other surface types. The material is actually a quartz composite that doesn't need to be sealed and is practically maintenance free! - Mary Riley, ABR, CNE, Century 21 Properties Plus

Shark Tank: Architect Edition at the Charleston Home + Design Show The popular event Shark Tank: Architect Edition returned to the lineup of events during the most recent semi-annual Architect Symposium this past January. Nearly 50 local architects browsed the booths of 16 local vendors and were able to speak with each company about the products or services that they offered. This gathering of tailored vendors helped to connect architects with business that would specifically pertain to architectural interests. Architects were given event “spec sheets” so they could take notes about the products and chose products and companies that they would possibly use in the future. This small, laid-back atmosphere allowed for all parties to engage in a pressure-free fashion about many topics that impact Lowcountry building and design. Vendor donated prizes were given out to lucky winning architects via a random drawing. At the conclusion of the day, both vendors and architects provided positive feedback about the second installment of this event.

Jeremy Brooking, his wife Tia, and their two daughters found out earlier this year that they would be receiving a new home from Operation Finally Home. Operation Finally Home is “dedicated to providing custom-built homes for America’s military heroes who have sacrificed for our freedoms and values.” The Daniel Island Company donated the Carnes Crossroads Community lot for this Southern Living Building Hope and Tanger Outlet’s sponsored project. Architect Suzanne Stern from Our Town Plans is designing this home. Max Crosby Construction will be breaking ground on this mortgage-free home for this deserving family this spring. Community support and donations are welcomed. For more information, call Max Crosby Construction at (843) 766-9976 or visit maxcrosbyconstruction.com.

SHOP TALK

Story by By Tyler Herzog

Shield Your Property Charleston has just become host to a new Mosquito Shield location, with owners Kevin and Teresa Jones excited to spearhead the local business. The couple’s ultimate goal is “to give folks their yards’ back, and get them to actually enjoy being outside, unbothered.” Mosquito Shield can aid in ridding your outdoor living space from the annoyance and health risks that mosquitoes present with their simple and effective approach. Licensed technicians will first access your property, apply a wax based repellent, then apply a proprietary spray blend guaranteed to cling to the property’s structures and fauna. This will eliminate existing mosquitoes and mask the presence of CO2, which attracts them. In order to maintain the new barrier, fresh layers will be applied routinely, eventually building up to create an impenetrable shield guaranteed to fulfill the company’s mission statement. For more information, call Mosquito Shield at (854) 444-2667 or visit moshield.com.

Arrival of Exotic Countertops

Story by By Tyler Herzog

Real Deal Countertops, renown for their diverse and exquisite natural stones, will be expanding their collection through the incorporation of exotic countertops. Imported directly from Brazil, the stones come in a variety of granite and quartzite and range all the more in color. What makes them truly exotic is the sourcing. Once the stones arrive in early spring, expert installers can assist homeowners in selecting and creating the countertop that best suits the space’s environment, whether indoor or outdoor, modern, or traditional. Located in Summerville, all it takes is one short trip to the showroom to add an extraordinary touch to your home.

Home Tour Season Commences It's that time of year again, and this year's home tour exhibits will not disappoint. The homes in each tour display a variety of architectural styles and design choices. Beginning Friday, April 7th, the Seventeenth Annual Kiawah Island Art and Homes Tour will take place. The self-guided tour showcases the builders' work and homeowners' collected artworks, antiques, and locally handcrafted furnishings. Soon after, the Daniel Island Luxury Home Tour will be the host of a self-guided tour of six stunning homes on Daniel Island on April 22nd. Last on the line-up is the Old Village Home, Garden & Art Tour, taking place on April 30th in Mt. Pleasant. Guests will have the opportunity to walk through the houses, as well as the homes' flora while artists showcase their work within. Come check out the stunning homes in the Lowcountry for architectural, landscape, and artistic inspiration galore. Story by By Tyler Herzog
