nybody who experienced their teens in the ’90s would understand swooning upon meeting Leonardo DiCaprio. But I have an admission. At this point in my life, when substance over smiles wins out, Frank Abagnale— the inspiration for Leonardo’s character in the movie Catch Me If You Can—is my dream boat. Granted, he is my father’s age, he has no Golden Globes, and pictures of Frank were never plastered in my school locker. Still, he is a legend. So, upon Frank opening his Daniel Island front door, giddiness naturally ensued for the 30 somethings on CH+D’s production staff. That moment was captured and depicted on the cover, knowing you’ll likely have the same reaction. — Christy Conway, Editor

n graduate school at College of Charleston, I found myself enraptured by James Joyce because his works captured—so honestly—elements of real, everyday life. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, his protagonist Stephen remarks, “I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience.” I’ve found that my husband and I daily seek this reality of experience. It is why we’re renting a loft on King Street before purchasing a home; we want to encounter our historic city from its very center. It is why we like to travel abroad; we want to taste, feel, and see an altogether unfamiliar culture.

Honestly Inspirational London-born antique dealer Steven Shell drove up and down the East Coast looking for a place to open a retail store, which would allow his daughter, newborn grandson, and sonin-law to move to the US. After driving nearly 6,000 miles, he fell in love with Charleston’s charm. And now, to his delight, the clan manages a showroom stocked with furnishings and

Steven, what is your professional background, and how did you find yourself selling furniture in the American South? I’ve traded antiques in Eastern Europe, Great Britain, Spain, and the United States. I’ve traveled around the world finding curios for the past 25 years, getting to

know all manner of the weird and wonderful. Fortunately, my passion for furniture was allowed to develop further, and for the last 22 of those years, I’ve been taking my inspirations and interpreting them into furniture designs for Steven Shell Living. At our only factory store, located in Mt. Pleasant, we proudly sell that furniture. So, you design the furniture. Who manufactures that furniture? We actually own a production facility in Indonesia (which covers 20 acres) where we employ over 1,000 master craftsmen, woodworkers, artists, finishers, millers, and support staff. Each year, we ship over 100,000 items of quality furniture and accessories to hundreds of retailers in over 20 different countries customers.

Our master craftsmen use techniques that have been handed down for generations. Your company has what you call a Green Pledge. What exactly does that mean? The majority of our furniture is constructed from Indonesian mahogany, a sustainable resource. ith a wide variety of paint available on the market, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for your home, and these days, color is not the only important factor when considering exterior paint. It’s equally as important to weigh the effects your paint may have on the environment and how long it will last. Luckily, coating technology exists that offers better protection than typical exterior paint from and for the environment. By utilizing a mixture of non-toxic chemicals, exterior coating lasts longer than paint and needs to be reapplied less often, thus saving time and the resources required for frequent reapplication. Mushroom Mulch

ith spring upon us, the time to start gardening again is here. But before you bring out the shovel and scatter seeds, you might want to think about improving the quality of the soil in which you’re planting. Mixing some compost into the soil might provide the added boost of nutrients needed to make your plants grow better than ever before. If it’s a vegetable garden, you may worry about adding a soil amendment with harmful chemicals mixed in; you can avoid this problem by using mushroom compost. Made from soil used to grow real, organic mushrooms, the compost can

provide key nutrients that other plants thrive on. Since mushroom compost is only used once to grow mushrooms, it contains plenty of leftover nutrients that vegetable gardens can use effectively. Not to mention, it’s recycling waste and aiding in the preservation of Mother Nature. Bert Snyder of Palmetto Exterminators “In our semi-tropical environment, homes need protection from wood-destroying organisms as well as typical pests, such as spiders, ants, fleas, ticks, and palmetto bugs. We do provide services to protect houses from these pests, but while we’re doing that, we also perform a home inspection. We find a lot of little maintenance issues, wood-destroying fungi, and plumbing or electrical problems. Many times, homeowners wouldn’t have found these issues because they’re hidden in difficult-to-reach spaces. Currently, there is a 30-percent federal tax credit on solar-panel purchases, and here in South Carolina, a 25-percent state tax credit is available. What would normally be an office off the foyer is now a perfectly feminine nursery, decorated with a sweet chandelier, pink painted ceiling, and a locally built (and designed by Thomas) custom cabinet with mullion glass doors, crystal hardware, and a hanging rod to display all of Avery’s tiny dresses.

The “Weathered Slate” stain used on the island enhances the unique grain pattern in the hickory wood and complements the “Super White” honed granite. Strategically placed transom windows allow for staggered wall cabinetry (which continues to the counter), providing appliance storage and a great finishing spot for the full-tile backsplash.

“For our two nine-year-old dogs, we designed the dog-bowl drawer. It rolls out for the dogs to eat and in when they are finished, so the bowls are not always showing,” says Thomas of the laundry room. In addition to that unique feature, the couple included a fold-up, drop-down ironing board on a swivel to efficiently utilize the space and match the cabinetry on the opposing wall.

Using only the most unique cabinetry configurations throughout the house, the master bathroom is no exception. The “Agreeable Gray” Smithport double vanity has a blend of inset and full-overlay doors with a center column resting on a four-inch granite backsplash. eveloped in China in the 1700s, the technique of theorem painting traveled to the western nations of England and the United States in the early 1800s. The art form was taught to many girls in finishing school. The style of painting is unique because it employs the use of hand-cut stencils to form the separate layers of the design, which usually depicts fruit, flowers, vegetables, or a combination of these items resting in a bowl. Sea Island Habitat Deconstruction Manager Doug Mackenzie

Sea Island Salvagers Since becoming the third Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the world in 1978, Sea Island Habitat has built 300 affordable homes in the Lowcountry for those in need. In order to raise money for that mission, the charity sells donated items, ranging from artwork and furniture to toilets and granite countertops, at the ReStore. To cull the latter items, Habitat maintains a Deconstruction Division run by Doug Mackenzie, a self-appointed ‘construction detective,’ recycling proponent, and this issue’s pro on the go.

Doug drives to the ReStore on Johns Island in order to check deconstruction. habitat.org. Via this website, homeowners are able to submit photographs of the large, fixed items in their home that they would like to donate. By seeing (online) the construction of the cabinetry that needs to be removed, for instance, Doug is able to estimate the time and personnel required for that particular job.

Before loading up his deconstruction tools, including crowbars and drill bits of all sizes, Doug checks in with the front desk at the ReStore to see if they have any deconstruction job referrals for him to schedule. Often, shoppers ask to donate larger items directly from the front desk.

Driving a 20-foot truck, Doug and his volunteer, John Ross, arrive at the home of a Johns Island donator. The homeowner is looking to remodel her storage building into a guesthouse. Thus, she would like Doug to remove

the dated melamine cabinetry, appliances, and plumbing fixtures.

To determine the value of the items retrieved, Doug checks the functionality of both the stove and the refrigerator before disconnecting the power and water to the room. Then, Doug marks the appliances as checked so that ReStore shoppers will feel comfortable knowing their purchase will work when installed.

Doug and John investigate the construction of the kitchen, including how the sink is attached to the laminate countertop and how the cabinets are hung on the wall. If the two were to dismantle the kitchen improperly, they could defeat their purpose of resale.

The two deconstructers detach and remove all of the donatable items. Once the future merchandise is loaded, Doug takes the truck to the ReStore to unload so that the items can be marked, priced, and

distributed within the “yard” (the openair area containing the reclaimed building materials). The ReStore aims to price the items between 30 and 50 percent less than what they would sell for if they were new.

Doug takes the afternoon to schedule walk throughs, deconstructions, and volunteers, which takes up a lot of his time since so many people with varying obligations are involved. Because Doug’s job often goes past five o’clock, he is thankful when donors and volunteers can be flexible.

3:30pm

With a bit of unplanned time on his hands, Doug works in the yard, reorganizing the cabinets. Since the store is a constant revolving door of merchandise, it is important to keep the items visible and resellable, maintaining the goal of the ReStore—to generate funds to build more houses for those in need.

THE CRAFTSMEN: THE CRAFT:

Cliff and Corey weld various metals and work with other raw materials to create one-of-a-kind accents, art, lighting, wrought-iron gates, and furniture pieces. When CH+D stopped by their workshop, the team was focusing on the construction of a metal-and-wood coffee table.

THE BACKSTORY:

Hailing from the state of New Jersey, Cliff and Corey bring a combined 42 years of experience to their new Charleston company. The family has been in the metalworking business for four generations now; Cliff’s grandfather, in fact, was in the copper industry decades ago. Their handcrafted precision and keen eye for minute details make each homeaccent piece they produce an inspiring work of art.

THE PROCESS:

To create a table like the one pictured, Corey began with an idea. He sketched his vision onto paper and tweaked the drawing to perfection. Then, he duplicated his drawing in life-sized proportion on rosin paper. Next, Corey gathered the materials he needed: sheet metal for gussets, L-beams for the frame, natural wood for the tabletop, and rivets to hold all the pieces in place. He formed the gussets by cutting them from the sheet metal with a plasma cutter and bent them at a 90-degree angle using a brake press. Then, Corey constructed the frame of the table, which involved welding the L-beams together, attaching the gussets to the corners with the rivets, and torching the frame to give it a slightly psychedelic sheen. Finally, Corey turned his attention to the wooden tabletop, which he cut, pieced together with hidden biscuit fasteners, distressed (by beating it with any available object in the shop), stained, and sealed. Once he added the wood top to the frame, the coffee table was complete and ready to find a home in a Lowcountry residence. He Said: I really do enjoy both types of construction: remodeling and starting from the ground up. I have found the main differences, when looking back on all of our homes, were the relationships we formed with each of our homeowners. They were more rewarding than anything else.

She Said: These are so different and neither is more rewarding. What is most rewarding is a homeowner that loves his or her new (or newly remodeled) home. That is why we got into this business—to deliver a house that the homeowner wants, be it new or remodeled.

Of all the additions to a custom home—spray-foam insulation, Cat-5 wiring, efficient appliances and fixtures, and impact-resistant windows, for example—which are the most important?

He Said: The most important aspects are the technologies within the building envelope, including spray-foam insulation, dehumidification, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. Technology has been a game changer for home performance.

She Said: Impact-rated windows and doors are so important, especially here in the Lowcountry. Knowing that your house is protected from a storm even when you are not there is priceless.

Contractors are required to build any style home, but if you could build a home in your own style, what would it be?

He Said: Personally, I enjoy homes that contain a modern touch when it fits the surroundings appropriately. My main objective for all styles, however, is to provide the most functionality for the homeowners. In that way, I greatly appreciate the architecture in all styles of homes.

She Said: On the outside, I like wide porches, rafter tails, cottage-style windows, tapered columns, metal roofs— beach bungalows. On the inside, I am very contemporary. Honestly, when it comes down to it, though, I am more concerned with the trees and plants in my yard than my house.

Shying Away from Bold Color Choices Don’t be afraid to add a burst of color to your kitchen. If you’re worried about growing tired of your choice, implement a striking hue in a lessexpensive element—like paint, kitchen towels, or hardware—that can easily be replaced down the road.

Forgetting Functionality Over the course of a month, be particularly attentive to your habits in the kitchen and develop a design based on your observations. BUILDING BLOCKS | Jeffery Builders A true Charlestonian, Grady Jeffery grew up doing all types of supporting projects on construction jobsites—from framing to laying sheetrock. So, it was a natural fit for him to become a homebuilder and start his own business, Jeffery Builders. Since then, he has gained a well-respected reputation based on his customer service (and his ability to chat about anything from his love of building to offshore fishing).

At what point did you know that building homes was the career path for you?

What exciting projects do you have on the horizon or have you completed recently?

I realized early on that I simply enjoyed being on the jobsite. Hanging around jobsites enabled me to do my favorite thing—talk! I enjoy talking to people, not only my clients, but also my subcontractors.

We are an approved, preferred builder in Olde Park and were chosen by a client to build a high-end custom home in that neighborhood. We also have two building projects happening on Folly River that will be complete within the next few months. Additionally, we are consistently taking on remodeling projects—big and small. I enjoy doing renovations because they require true craftsmanship and imagination.

What sets you apart from other builders? That’s a tough question; there are a lot of good builders in Charleston who I have learned from and respect. I think (and hope) what sets me apart from other builders is the customer service that I give to my clients. Everyone strives to give good customer service, but I want to establish a long-lasting relationship with my clients during the life of their home-building project and afterwards. Upon winning the Design Week Competition in 1998, Buz was offered an internship position at Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects in New York City. Working directly under Charles Gwathmey for four years designing houses and commercial buildings for clients such as Michael Dell, Jerry Seinfeld, and the Guggenheim Museum, Buz honed his craft and prepared to open his own firm in Charleston, which he did successfully in 2004.

DESIGN DILEMMA Gigi Chapman has been devising lovely living spaces since 1979, meaning she has fostered the experience and expertise to solve any design dilemma that arises. Born and raised in Charleston, Gigi moved away from the Palmetto State to begin her career in Mississippi. Upon her return to the Lowcountry (and after owning a successful retail store on the peninsula in the 1990s), she opened DeGuise Interiors, a full-service design studio and showroom located in I’On Square.

The Dilemma:

When two people with vastly different design styles make the decision to combine households, there are two options: throw out all the furniture in order to start over or develop a design that incorporates each individual’s unique pieces and tastes. This is precisely the dilemma that a Mt. Pleasant couple recently encountered; his previous home in Baltimore was filled with dark, masculine antique pieces while her New York flat was garnished with light, airy furnishings.

herri and Russ Nester, owners of local design-build firm Vintage Design, have known Paul Walker for years; their relationship began when Paul contacted the Nesters to help design the buildings for his budding storage-unit business fifteen years ago. Upon deciding to dote upon his new wife by building her a dream home as a wedding gift, Paul knew just who to call. The team at Vintage Design worked closely with Paul and his wife, Laura, to design the home around her glamorous tastes and his desire for complete uniqueness. Sherri describes, “Mrs. Walker likes a lot of ‘bling,’ as she calls it, and Mr. Walker’s request, throughout the whole project, was, ‘Sherri, I want something that no one else has.’” Each room in the home reflects these two desires.

Walking up to the home, guests first approach the front door, which is simply “majestic,” explains Sherri. It’s a precisely carved mahogany door standing ten-feet tall, stretching five-feet across, and making a stunning first impression. Stepping inside, the beauty of the home becomes even more apparent in the sophisticated details gracing every room. The paint in much of the house is iridescent; it is a special, Italian metallic finish that reflects light. In the office, the primary wall is not painted, but plated in silver to create a masculine space that blends harmoniously with the dining room across the hall. The floors (which are heated by a geothermal system) feature extra-wide eight-inch engineered walnut planks with custom-milled baseboards. The ceilings vary from room to room; some are barreled, some coffered, some Venetian plastered, and some hand-painted. The finishes of the floors, walls, and ceilings

are complemented by the décor, which can be described as French Regal with quite a bit of Laura’s modern bling. To pull this entire look together, the Walkers relied on the meticulous attention to detail provided by construction manager Ramin Farahvashi, who has been working on custom homes with the Nesters since 1998.

The kitchen’s glamorous style is subtle and found in facets such as oversized cabinet hardware. However, Sherri designed the kitchen—first and foremost—for functionality. Tucked behind the kitchen lies an extensive pantry, which is the signature feature found in many of the homes that Sherri creates. “When I have the opportunity, I design a back kitchen adjacent to the main kitchen,” says Sherri, “so that we can keep the clutter out of the entertaining space.” Russ adds, “The Walkers may throw a pool CH+D • Spring 2014

party with fifty or sixty people, and by having the back kitchen, they can have someone preparing food and cleaning dishes away from the party space. The public area continues to look nice and clean—always presentable.” The kitchen is visually connected to the breakfast room and exterior by the brightblue Venetian plaster ceiling that complements the azure hues of the resort-style pool. The master bedroom also overlooks the

little slice of paradise that is the Walkers’ backyard. Beyond Imagination Just a few decades ago, the idea of controlling an entire house with just the push of a button was unfathomable. Today, technology is overtaking the home to make everyday living simpler than ever before.

magine waking up in the morning and placing your feet on the floor beside your bed, a motion that triggers the light in your bathroom to illuminate and the television to jump to life and stream the morning news. As you walk from room to room, sensors automatically track your natural motions so that the lights turn on when you enter and off when you exit. You cross the threshold of the kitchen to find your iPod playing your favorite Coltrane tune and your morning coffee

already brewed, waiting for you to take the first sip. This isn’t a home from a futuristic film; current technology in home automation has made these conveniences a reality. For practicality’s sake, most homeowners don’t seek to install an entire home-automation package all at once. Instead, many start with bits and pieces that make their dayto-day tasks more enjoyable and add more complex facets over time.

During the construction phase of their new home, two Mt. Pleasant homeowners, in particular, decided to make a technological jump from bare-minimum to advanced automation. The couple, lacking knowledge about the systems and process, contacted the gurus at TeqHŌM, a new division of QEI Security and Technology (a sister company of the longstanding, local business Quality Electric). TeqHŌM’s Frank Panezich describes the system installed in the Mt. Pleasant

house saying, “We started with the basic fundamentals; the customer had asked for a simple audio system to listen to music throughout the whole house, and we provided that for them. We put speakers in every room, and the bedroom of each child has its own, separate audio system, allowing the kids to plug their iPhones into the wall and listen to their own music.” However, as the homeowners learned more about the vast possibilities available, they decided upon TeqHŌM’s com-

plete system, which includes an adaptable home-automation control center that allows users to access (and, in the future, expand) their homes’ technological capabilities. TeqHŌM strives to provide an incredibly simple user interface so that even newcomers to home technology can easily interact with the advanced systems. Homeowners first download an app on their smart phone or iPad (systems that most people already use everyday).

From that app, they can dim the lights, reduce the volume on the television, and even lock the front door. In addition to these tasks made simple by TeqHŌM’s system, the Mt. Pleasant homeowners can also manage their home security system. Frank explains that TeqHŌM installs the devices and monitors residences through their home-security division. This provides homeowners with peace of mind, knowing that they can switch their alarm

A Match Made in Heaven Sullivan’s Island home-building businesses Sea Island Builders and Herlong and Associates partnered successfully for a dramatic Wild Dunes remodel.

s any custom-home owner knows, a newly constructed house is only as good as the team that built it. The ability to communicate details, share work efficiently without overlap, and (let’s be honest) get along, are all important to the success of a project. So, one of the most reputable architect firms

paired with one of the hardest working builders in town does not always guarantee a match made in heaven. In the case of Barbara and Nick Santella’s Wild Dunes remodel, however, the stars aligned when Sea Island Builders and Herlong and Associates were chosen. Together

they produced an amazing result. for Herlong and Associates, adds, “We love working with Sea Island Builders. One of the reasons we like them so much is because they will commit the resources—time and manpower. Both firms are very much team focused.” Starting with a great team as the foundation, Sea Island Builders

transformed the look of the home by bringing down dated dividing walls, adding 450 square feet, and generally beautifying every surface of the home. “We touched every square inch of the home,” says Jeff. “Everything inside was completely redone. The trim package is extensive. Every room has a lot of wood, including

high wainscots, v-groove, and shiplap on the walls and walnut on the floors.” Of course, the fact that the homeowners (with the help of Theresa and her coworkers Heather Allison and Sarah Rolfes) chose some truly distinct finishes helped make the home stand out. Most of the hardware was custom designed by Fox-

Foaming Home Homeowners undergoing a large-scale remodel chose to update not only the look, but also the efficiency of their home.

uilder Scott Hyland of Hyland Construction and Design was tasked with the job of expanding and modernizing a 1978 Isle of Palms residence. On his to-do list was raising the home six feet, moving the entry, incorporating additions to both sides of the structure, and making the space as efficient as possible with a combination of traditional fiberglass batt and closedcell spray foam insulations. “Spray foam insulation is a two-part insulation that is made up of polyol resin and isocyanate,” explains Brian Hopkins of Ecofoam Insulation and Coatings, the

local company that Scott chose to work with on this project. “Those two components come out of our large rig and mix at the tip of our applicators’ guns. And when they’ve mixed, we’ve created an expanding, hardening foam. Closed-cell spray foam is a dense product that is moisture and mildew resistant. It even adds some rigid strength inside the structure.” For this remodel, there were two reasons why Scott chose to use the adaptable, money-saving product. First, homes built before efficiency standards were implemented, like this Lowcountry example, notoriously leak

heat in the winter and conditioned air in the summer. Spray foam closes those escape points, saving the homeowner from exorbitant energy bills. For the second reason, Scott details, “Some of the existing framing in the roof lines was not suitable for standard insulation. Using spray foam, you can get a two-inch-thick insulation into a space that R30 [standard] batt would not fit. We were able to use the existing framing, which saved the customer a lot of money on the overall project.” For both of these reasons, Scott and the homeown-

ers chose spray foam in general and Ecofoam in specific. Ecofoam Insulation and Coatings first started in the Savannah area by owner Tara Davis. Since then, they’ve branched out all over the Southeast because of the increased demand for spray foam (in reaction to new building codes). Additionally, contractors appreciate that Ecofoam maintains a one-on-one relationship with the manufacturer of the spray foam, which is highly unusual and helpful in cases of malfunctioning equipment and challenging application sites. Relationships like these only help the homeowner in the long run. “It’s been a great project to be involved with. It was a bear, but we got it done,” says Brian. o buy a house is financially constricting to begin with, but to fully landscape and develop your backyard on top of buying a house can be downright time consuming, overwhelming, and expensive. While some people suggest rolling all of these extra amenities into the mortgage, homeowner Kim Lapin was pleased that she waited to put

her full attention on the backyard after living in her house for awhile. And, she had no problems making the additions look as though they had been part of the design from the start. There to help her through the backyard transformation was Mandi Baldwin of Alaglas Pools of Charles-

ton. “We had talked to several different pool companies, and I liked Mandi and Ken,” says Kim of the husband-and-wife team at Alaglas. “I felt comfortable with them, like it was the right fit for us.” Together, Kim and Mandi chose the pool-andspa configuration, coping material, decking style, and fire-pit placement.

“We offer fiberglass pools, but we can customize the look with any tile—glass or ceramic,” explains Mandi. “The big thing is that the person has to have a vision. Pictures always help to show exactly what he or she wants.” For this project, Kim certainly had a vision, adding, “The word I kept using was oasis.”

The team drew up a plan that included a 14-by-32-inch saltwater pool in a freeform shape with a round hot tub tucked into the concave curve. “We added ceramic tiles to the pool, which tie into Kim’s house, her furniture, and her coping,” states Mandi. “We did a paver coping all around the edge to pull the look from the existing home’s exterior.” It took some

time to find everything that matched perfectly, the brick being a particular challenge. Kim was actually able to locate the type of brick used on the home (built a few years back) from the builder. “We like to take control of the project so that everything gets done,” Mandi states, referring to not only the installation of

the pool, firepit, and decking, but also the construction of the fiberglass pool itself, which takes place in South Carolina by Alaglas. “We build about 30 pools in different shapes and sizes in a controlled environment,” says Mandi. “We encourage homeowners to check out their pool being made if they want to.” After conception, design, and implementation, Kim and Mandi

were able to create multiple different entertaining areas that extend seamlessly from the back of the home. Kim attributes the success to Alaglas’s ability to handle all aspects of a backyard makeover. v

peration Finally Home is a nonprofit organization that strives to provide completely free custom homes for wounded or disabled soldiers returning from war. Last year, the organization chose to honor Lowcountry soldier Robert Wright by constructing a home in Ladson for him and his family. Local establishment Smith’s Heating and Air felt honored to be chosen by builder Pulte Homes to install the HVAC unit at the Wrights’ new residence. Ed Young, owner of Smith’s, recounts, “Pulte con-

tacted us for the Operation Finally Home house because we do all of their work in this area. They asked us to donate the materials, the ductwork, and the unit, and we were happy to do it.” The specific unit was chosen to meet the two most important needs of the consumer— year-round comfort and an affordable electric bill. Ed calculated the Manual J, which is a formula used to determine the appropriate HVAC unit size for a particular structure. The calculation accounts for the quality of insulation, window sizes, heat produced by kitchen appli-

ances and lighting, square footage of the home, and many other factors. To match the Manual J calculation, Ed installed a Lennox unit in the home with a 15 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating), which is a number that determines the efficiency of a HVAC unit. (Hint: A higher SEER number equals greater efficiency and lower operation costs. SEER ratings reach up to the mid-20s, and a basic HVAC unit is 13 SEER.) Ed chose this Lennox system for his positive opinion of the brand and the system’s ability to keep the Wrights warm and cozy

(or nice and cool, depending upon the season) at an affordable cost. Beyond the technical heating and air system, the Wright family’s needs were of utmost importance in the entire design of the home. “They basically tailored the house to my medical needs and the desires of the kids and my wife, Bethany,” explains Robert. The home was constructed not only to fulfill immediate wishes—including a room for each of the family’s four children and an intercom system to allow for conversation between rooms—but also to provide function into the future. For example, if Robert’s disability progresses and causes him to be wheelchair bound, the whole home is already designed to become handicap accessible. Of the fam-

ily’s amazing experience with Operation Finally Home, Bethany gratefully remarks, “We are so incredibly thankful for our home. he adage “dress for the job you want” is particularly applicable to Frank Abagnale, the inspiration for the movie Catch Me If You Can.

Nowadays, Frank wears some iteration of slacks, a dress shirt, and a tie—the costume of bankers, government agents, and fraud consultants (the title that Frank currently holds). But Frank once wore other costumes, including pilot uniforms and lab coats, quite convincingly in fact.

See, Frank was neither a pilot nor a doctor, but as a late teen, he persuaded

airlines to let him fly thousands of miles in a cockpit jump seat for free and prompted a Georgia hospital to hire him to manage a team of medical interns. He did this simply with his conversational ease, phony credentials, and the (appropriate) clothes on his back. At the age of 65, Frank has lived more than half of his life—after his antics and subsequent years in prison—lecturing extensively for the FBI Academy and financial institutions, yet he is still referred to as the world’s greatest con man. I eagerly sat down with Frank in his handsome wood-clad study on Daniel Island to answer a nagging question that I had formed upon reading about him: Is Frank a wolf in a sheep’s suit? Or, to put it another way, is Frank playing a well-crafted role as Frank Abagnale, the reformed authority on forgery? Like Aesop’s fable suggests, I believe one’s nature does eventually betray itself. After speaking with him about his close-knit family, his and his wife’s vision for their custom home, and his 35 years of developing strategies and technologies to defeat impending threats on personal and financial security, I realized that he already divulged his nature—a long time ago. Frank is a genuinely benevolent guy, and a dapper one at that.

You’ve been called the world’s greatest con man, the Skywayman, a confidence trickster, and an opportunist. How would you describe yourself ? I think of myself as very much an opportunist. I was extremely creative. I saw things that other people didn’t see. And, certainly, I could think out of the box. Now, I have been teaching FBI agents for 30 years how to think outside of the box. But the word opportunist has a negative connotation, literally meaning “someone who tries to get an advantage or something valuable from a

situation without thinking about what is fair or right.” Don’t you want to distance yourself from that perception? The word shouldn’t have a negative connotation. It should mean simply seeing things that other people don’t and acting on those observations. A good example of that is when I boarded a plane one time posing as a pilot. I was sitting in the cockpit, and the captain turned around and said, “The tower asked me to see your pilot’s license.” I’d never been asked that. So, I very quickly replied, “You know what, I put that in my checked flight bag.” So then I thought,

I need to get a pilot’s license, but how do I do that? About that same time, I was reading a flying magazine, and in the magazine was an ad that said that you could take your pilot’s license and make it into a plaque on the wall. It would be a metal plaque with black letters, velvet around it, and a wood frame. All you had to do is send them the information from your license. Sure enough, two weeks later, here comes this plaque in the mail. Then, I went down to this print shop in Manhattan, and I said to the guy, “This is my pilot’s license, but I’d like to carry it in my wallet like some people do with their college diploma. Is there any way that you could shoot this

down and print it?” It turned out looking like an exact replica of a license. That was the kind of thing that no one thought of. Most people have heard of your story, read your book, seen Catch Me If You Can, or even watched the musical, but tell us another story about the ingenuity that you had as an impostor. When I started going overseas, I couldn’t get a passport because the government was looking for me. So, I was talking to this flight attendant. (I learned so much just from having conversations with people.) I just

happened to say, “You know, I only fly domestically. When you guys go overseas, how do you go in and out of all the airports? Do they keep stamping your passports?” She answered, “No, we have an international crew card.” It was basically a business card that folded. The front was red with the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] logo, and on the inside was a stapled passport picture. It said crew member, the airline, and an ID number. So, I easily replicated

that, and that is why the feds couldn’t figure how I was getting in and out of all of those countries without a passport. That really bothered them. It is amazing that you got away with all that you did. But, why? Why lie to everyone around you? CH+D • Spring 2014

I ran away from home in the ’60s when I was 16 years old. I ended up in New York City. I had no money—nothing. I had written some checks, and at first, I had the money in the accounts to cover it. But then, the money ran out, and I found that it was really easy for me to keep writing checks. I always thought that it started for me as a way to survive. Then, people starting chasing me because I was writing bad checks and I was a runaway. It

became about me staying one step ahead of the people who were chasing me. Ultimately, in the end, I think it was a game. Did it bother you morally that things you were doing were illegal? And if not, weren’t you worried for your safety? No matter how much I pretended to be older, in reality, I was just a kid. I looked at everything through the eyes of an ado-

lescent. I had no fear. It was like driving down the interstate at 100 miles an hour. I wasn’t thinking of the consequences. Once, I went into Chase Manhattan Bank and cashed a 500-dollar check, being an adolescent, I justified it by thinking, Well, this is a multi-billion-dollar company, and my 500 dollars isn’t going to hurt this bank. What was funny, though, is if I had walked into a dry-cleaning store at that time and saw a cash-register drawer

open, I would never have touched that money. In my mind, that was stealing. I was brought up in a very strict Catholic family and went to Catholic school. I was given all the right tools: character and ethics. That, and the love of a good woman, is eventually what saved you, isn’t it? I have to be honest with you. When the government came to me and said, “We’re going to take you out of prison,” I didn’t say, “Well, I am done with this crime.” Prison didn’t do anything but hold me there a few years to keep me off the streets. I was not rehabilitated. I wasn’t born again. I didn’t have any religious awakening. And then I met Kelly, and I fell in love with her. I asked her to marry me. I didn’t have a dime to my name, so I had nothing to offer her. She married me against the wishes of her parents. She gave me three beautiful sons, and that is really what changed my life.

You have a very frank way of speaking about your family that is refreshing. Do you think that you are able to appreciate your family this way because of your lack of honest relationships when you were on the run and your parents’ divorce, the impetus for your running away? No matter what anybody tells you, divorce is a very devastating thing. I knew that when I married Kelly, it would never enter my mind to get divorced. It would never enter my mind to put my children through what I went through. I knew that from day one. I knew the importance of having a family and keeping that family together. I live to make my wife happy everyday, and I live to take care of my kids. I do a lot of things for my kids, but they are great kids. People say that I spoil them. I do it because I love them.

I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t play golf. If I have to spend money, I spend money on my kids. Really, in life, all you have is your family. Kelly and I talk about it all the time. I know that if tomorrow we didn’t have a dime, my wife and I could move into an apartment somewhere and we’d be just as happy. I tell my kids, “Having money gives you options, but it doesn’t bring you happiness. Happiness is something that you make for yourself.” Well, at least for now, you don’t live in an apartment. You live in a beautiful home on Daniel Island that is filled with family photos and nostalgic tokens. What made you choose those items for decoration? I’m not the type to have a lot of art. I’d rather have pictures of my children and my grandchildren. They are the focal point of my life. Even though they’ve grown up now and have their own fami-

lies, they are still the most important things in my life. I like to be able to turn the corner and see them.

especially with the entrance and the two grandfather clocks.

And what about all the clocks?

Tell me about the process of building this house.

My wife has always had interesting clocks. There are five grandfather clocks in the house and six or seven cuckoo clocks (all are from Germany). And that is not to mention all the little clocks! She also knows how to take care of them. Her cuckoo clocks are intricate, and she can get into them and fix them. She enjoys doing that. I told her, though, we can’t buy any more clocks because we have no more room for any of them. When we were envisioning this house, while it was being built, I kept thinking, Where are all these clocks going to go? And yet, it worked out perfectly,

When we decided to move out to Daniel Island, the last thing I wanted to do was build a home. But, the ones that were for sale didn’t interest me. I had seen two or three homes that I liked, and they were all built by Carson Homes. I went by the office, and Chris Carson welcomed me in. He said, “I really don’t build spec homes, but I can build a home for you.” I said, “No, I’m not interested in building a home, but you build beautiful houses. I hope I can buy a house that you built that someone is selling.” Then, he said, “Well, by the way, I’m building a house. It’s just in framing.” My wife and I went by, and we were just stunned by the unique de-

sign of it. He eventually agreed to sell it to me. Funny thing is, he was actually building it for himself originally. It really seems to fit you and Kelly, both aesthetically and functionally. What are your favorite parts of the home? I like that the master suite is so separated. All my grandkids can be on one side, and you can’t hear a thing in the master. And if you are older, you don’t have to worry about going upstairs because the master is downstairs. It’s almost like a compound. I know a lot of people that see it from the outside think it is one big house, so they say, “Man, your house is huge!” I say, “No. It’s all hollow in the middle.” It does give a great street presence. I’m also somebody who loves good craftsmanship: crown moulding, bookcases,

and things that are very unique and take a great bit of skill. I lived downtown in a four-million-dollar, beautifully restored home built in 1784. This house was not near the cost of that house, and it has better craftsmanship and quality. Plus, it’s a much more updated, modern home. You lived downtown? But you’re not originally from this area. How did you find yourself in downtown Charleston? I raised my children in the house we lived in for 25 years in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We remodeled it several times. It was a great house on a lot of property, which was landscaped beautifully. I never thought I would move. I thought

that that was the house I’d die in. I was very attached to my house, but my wife always wanted to live in downtown Charleston. I said to her, “I’ll give it a try, but I don’t know that I’ll want to stay.” I’m not an urban person. I get my relaxation by washing my car and working in the yard. You can’t wash a car or work on the yard downtown.

children around. You know, I don’t want to be in a retirement community. And here, there are people who still work for a living. When we were downtown, it was very hard dealing with all those multimillionaires. They’d say, “Well, let’s go do something [in the middle of the week].” And I’d say, “You know, I have a job. I have go to work and make a living.”

So, is that what made you eventually choose Daniel Island?

I have to ask about that living. You are obviously doing well financially, being able to live in this beautiful house. And you’re clearly not still writing bad checks, having consulted for 35 years with the FBI in fraud prevention. How have you been able to capitalize on your experiences?

I like that Daniel Island is kind of secured. It is away from everything, but you’re still close to Charleston. It has a sense of community. When you come out here, there are kids all over the street. We like having

The grandchildren’s room fits any or all of the Abagnales’ three sons’ children. Since family is so important to Frank, the ability to host all of his descendants at once was a requirement for the custom home.

After serving 4 years of a 12-year sentence for my crimes, the government told me that they were willing to take me out of prison early on the condition that I work for an agency of the federal government for the remainder of my sentence or until my parole was satisfactorily completed. Needless to say, they did not compensate me. They said that I needed to find a job and live in Houston, Texas. My first job was with Pizza Inn. Then, I drove a bus from the airport to downtown. Then, I worked for a grocery store as a stock boy. But, once I started working with the government, I realized that they didn’t know about how fraud worked. And I thought, Well if these people are federal agents, people with Harvard law degrees, and CPAs, and they don’t know it, what does the guy on the street or a banker know? So, you share the lessons that you learned as a paperhanger with the very institutions that you defrauded?

Yes. I work for a number of companies on retainer and many on a fee-for-service basis. On the retainer side, one of my clients is LexisNexis. I work for the government division in their riskmanagement area. I deal with all of the crimes committed against any government agency, be it federal, county, state, or city. I help LexisNexis develop technologies to, for example, be able to authenticate who is applying for a benefit. In the first quarter of last year, I saved them 11 million dollars in payments they would have made. By the end of the year, they saved 30 million dollars on software that cost less than a million dollars. You’re also an avid speaker. Most of the speaking is for banks. I just finished a two-year tour for US Bank, one year for all their Fortune 500 customers and the other year for all their small-business customers. They’ll have a breakfast,

and I’ll put on a three-hour PowerPoint presentation that covers everything from embezzlement and check forgery to credit card fraud and identity theft—all of the things that companies are worried about. The other speaking that I do is all keynote, where organizations want me to talk about my life. I am very popular on college campuses. [laughs] Speaking of retelling your past, how did you explain yourself to your sons? When my oldest boy, Scott, was ten, he was a very avid reader. I walked into his room one night and handed him the book, Catch Me If You Can, and I said, “I’d like for you to read this book, but I don’t want you to ask me any questions about it until you finish reading it.” He read it in a couple of days and brought the book back to me. I said, “Do you understand that I am the person in the book that they are talking about and that I did those things? And, do you understand what I do today?” And that was all

there was to it. My three sons have always just looked at me as their dad. When people ask them, they say, “I judge my dad based on how he treats my mother and how he treats us.” When Scott became an FBI agent, I could not have been more proud. I’ve read that you have paid back all that you stole. Did you do that in order to prove to others, including your sons, that you are honorable? When I started to make money, I felt that my three sons would expect me to pay it back. I was convicted on 2.5 million dollars worth of bad checks. I had no way to spend all of that money. I was just a kid. I would put money in safe-deposit boxes. When I was caught, they recovered two million from those safe-deposit boxes. So, there were only about 500,000 dollars that was never recovered. The judge did not order restitution. So, I had no legal obligation to pay it back. It was about doing the right thing because of my sons.

If I might ask, how did you pay it back? I had to hire a law firm. They went back and researched all of the documents. They would write to a lot of hotels. Interestingly, a lot of them would write back and say that they had no records of it or that their insurance company reimbursed them for that fraud. The only one I didn’t try to pay back was the hooker. [laughs]

to put those burdens in their lives. I say, “People tell you all of your life that life is short, but the truth is that life is very long. So, when you mistreat someone, deceive someone, cheat on someone, or do something illegal, you have to live with that for the rest of your life.” I always have to live with my mistakes and if I don’t, people will remind me all the time of them. But, I understand why I have that burden. I made that burden. ✈

After all that you do for the government and financial institutions, do you still encounter people who don’t believe that you are a changed man or, at least, that you have redeemed yourself? There will always be people who say, “Well, that guy is still a con man. He’s just found a legal way to do what he does.” That’s one of the things that is very disheartening, but I had to learn to live with that reputation. When I go out to colleges to speak, I tell young people not CH+D • Spring 2014

The White Room Challenge, displayed at the eleventh annual Charleston Home + Design Show, featured six seasoned designers from Ethan Allen—Lydia Gieczys, Bill Goudelock, Kathy Evans, Susan Medaglia, Jane Neal, and Megan Bryan—who each gave his or her space an inspired design in just 12 hours! The idea of the White Room Challenge originally came from HGTV’s show Design Star, where various designers from around the world transform a bare “box” with the hope of winning the judges’ votes for the best room.

Subtle, understated tones fill this modern living room space, and a zebra-print ottoman provides a comfortable place to rest your feet whether you’re sitting on the stark white chair or the chic charcoal couch. Everything about this room screams upscale style and runway fashion.

Crimson walls accentuated by warm lighting and deep-toned accessories embrace the guests of this room by Jane and Megan. White Room Challenge

Unlike HGTV, CH+D paired each room with a local non-profit organization (The Citadel’s Mascots Boo X and General II, Pet Helpers, The Citadel’s Brigadier Scholarship Program, and RememberThose.org) with the aim to donate 500 dollars to every non-profit involved and a bonus to the organization associated with the winning room. With over 1,000 votes, the winning White Room Challenge designers were Kathy Evans and Susan Medaglia (Room C), and the winning charity was RememberThose.org. Highlighted by the bright yellow pillows on the couch and the teal chair, this room is brought to life by the brilliant use of lime green paint on the walls; it grabs the eye and gives off an air of fun that welcomes people into the living space.

Masculinity and comfort are the key features of this reader’s utopia designed by Bill. The tall, modern, black bookcase fits impeccably with the deep purple wall color. The space urges passersby to relax with a good book and pass the time in style. ith 60 taps throughout the building—24 of them located behind the bar, 8 placed within the 2 communal tap tables, and the remaining laid out like a candy shop for hop lovers on the “beer wall”—the Biergarten opening just blocks from the CH+D office was a pleasant treat for us. The selection of beers is great for those on the CH+D team who like bold brews. (Though, they do have a full bar for those who’ve had a harder day than others.) To be clear, our palates appreciate some suds af-

History Lesson To earn free passage to the New World, Gottlieb Rencher became the doctor on the RMS Carpathia. As many might recall, the Carpathia was the vessel that rescued all of the surviving passengers from the capsized Titanic on April 15, 1912. After such events, Gottlieb—known most notably for his taking care of recently widowed Mrs. Astor aboard the ship—moved to Huntington, New York where he displayed in his home items that he brought from Europe in the hold of the Carpathia. These items included a marble lamp and a selection of over 15 panes of Austrian stained glass. His great-grandson and wife, now Daniel Island residents, have carefully incorporated these historic pieces not only into their new, downsized home, but also into their new furniture— proudly combining their past with their future.

The CH+D team took an afternoon to listen to the fascinating tale of Gottlieb Rencher and admire the media cabinet that was custom crafted to exhibit his glass collection. Check out how the piece came to be.

STEP All of the 100-year-old leadlights (windows made of small glass sup-

ported by lead dividers) needed to be recamed (resoldered) in order to maintain their strength. Lead, over time, becomes soft and flexible, which increases the risk of breakage.

STEP Once that was complete, the homeowner approached Coralberry

Cottage, a local home-furnishing store run by architect and customfurniture-aficionado Liz Baker (and co-owner Melissa Hempstead). Liz was chosen for her proven ability to design and her connections with some of the finest woodworking craftsmen in the South.

STEP Immediately upon completing the design, Liz knew that Mark White,

one of Coralberry Cottage’s custom woodworkers, would be perfect for the job due to his style and attention to detail. So, Coralberry Cottage personally drove the glass down to Mark’s shop in Georgia so that he could measure the panels himself.

STEP Mark and his wife delivered the media cabinet in four separate

pieces so that it could be assembled and leveled on site. Additionally, the team attached all the doors (accentuated with seeded glass and crystal knobs). In the end, Mark pronounced that after 18 years of woodworking, this was his favorite piece because of the opportunity to preserve history.
