Sun Shades
Terry Brennan of Affordable Luxury Awnings
Tom Barnaba brought his business, Affordable Luxury Awnings, to South Carolina three years ago from New York. When he arrived, he hired Terry Brennan to be Charleston’s Territory Manager. An expert in his field, Terry shared with CH+D the details about picking out the perfect porch awning.
What’s the benefit of adding an awning to a porch or patio? An awning can add hundreds of usable square feet to a living space, allowing homeowners to enjoy their outdoor areas throughout the entire year. It provides a space that is, on average, twenty degrees cooler than the surrounding area. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to use and versatile; it rolls up compactly when not in use and expands at the push of a button. It’s a good price-conscious alternative to a sunroom or addition. What is the process of shopping for an awning, and where should homeowners begin? We always start with an estimate. We visit the home, give the best mounting options, demonstrate how far out the awning will project and how tall it will be, and review fabric choices. This process only takes about 30 minutes, and it provides the homeowner with an accurate price for the product and installation.
What are the different options that you provide? The combinations of style, size, and color are truly too numerous to list. Our signature product is the SunSetter Retractable Motorized Awning, which is extremely popular in South Carolina. All of our units come with a wind sensor, which will automatically close the awning if wind speeds increase. What’s one of your favorite projects that you’ve worked on recently? We’ve done several beautiful jobs on the water in the Charleston area, including a solar-powered motorized shade system on a home on Isle of Palms. These shades cover the exterior of windows when the sun hits them directly to keep the rays from warming the home (which, in turn, prevents the air conditioning system from working overtime).

HE SAID / SHE SAID
The Ins and Outs of Home Organization
Marty and Alane Whitaker of Tailored Closets face off about home organization.
He Said:
She Said:
He Said: Since I enjoy building furniture, I prefer a closet system with wood-grain. It has a built-in cabinet feel and can really make a statement.
Classic or Modern Organizing System?
He Said: Space is premium in a closet, so I prefer to organize by clothing type. Doing so creates zones in the system, which are helpful when getting dressed in a hurry or putting clothes away.
Organize Clothes by Color or Clothing Type?
She Said: Organizing by clothing color is so aesthetically pleasing and can simplify morning routines. Plus, it’s always easy to tell where everything goes with just a glance.
Type of Shoe Storage?
She Said: Combining slanted and flat shoe shelving is my favorite way to organize a tall shoe tower. Slanting the top shelves makes the shoes more visible and creates a chic, easy-to-use structure.
He Said: Storing shoes on flat adjustable shelves will allow space for more shelves, which in turn, equals more storage.
She Said: I like a solid-color closet system, such as white or gray, because it makes that wow-factor statement against the painted wall. Also, they can be less expensive than wood grain.

YOUR MONEY'S WORTH
Taking a Look at the Cost of
Energy Efficiency Testing Discovering Leaks with a Blower Door Test
Professionals perform a blower door test to find exactly where air leaks are occurring in a home, allowing homeowners to improve the tightness of their thermal envelope. The test is the first step in reducing energy consumption due to conditioned-air leakage, minimizing moisture condensation problems, eliminating uncomfortable drafts, and improving indoor air quality.
Maximizing Ductwork Potential
A home’s ductwork is the source of good indoor air quality. Ductwork with leaks leads to uncomfortable home temperatures and moisture problems (potentially creating mold and mildew). If your HVAC unit doesn’t seem to be working properly, it could likely be the result of a duct leak—you may even be sending conditioned air into your attic!
Long-Term Savings
The blower door test can save a homeowner money in the long run by ensuring that the home is airtight. If a house has air leaks, the air-conditioning unit will have to run harder and longer to compensate for the air that the house is losing. This makes a homeowner’s energy bill rise dramatically. A duct blast test acts the same way, guaranteeing that your HVAC unit is not working any harder than necessary to keep electric bills as low as possible.
For more information, call Palmetto Home Energy Audit at (843) 607-4442 or visit palmettohomeenergy.com.

HOMEWORK
~ ~ Interior Designer Yvonne Gregory of Yvonne Gregory Interiors At Home with
From her birthplace in Holland all the way to America, Yvonne Gregory, Allied ASID, has traveled the world, and in her adventures, she has developed an exceptional eye for items with a history. Whether she’s designing for a client or for herself,
1
Yvonne keeps crystal decanters in her chic and cozy living room. Vintage engraved signs that she found at a jeweler near her previous residence in Los Angeles hang on each container. To make sure they stand out, she placed them on a silver platter that accents the dark wood of the table underneath.
2
The fireplace-and-mantle area is one of Yvonne’s favorite places to add a touch of greenery and pizzazz. She spends most of her downtime around the fireplace, too. When she moved into the house, she also added the carved wood and marble-topped façade to make the whole ensemble pop.
3
One of Yvonne’s passions is art, whether it’s an antique photograph of her grandfather’s pub in The Hague or a beautiful oil painting. Original art and photos of her ancestors adorn almost every wall in her home. On a small table, she displays photographs, each in its own stunning antique frame, which she has specially curated over the years. This particular piece above the gallery of family photos is one that Yvonne painted herself.
4
The styling around this buffet exhibits Yvonne’s classic taste, with silver trays and formal serving ware. It’s flanked by Yvonne’s favorite thing: flora. In the background, her collection of old family photos in their antique frames fills the wall with memories.
For more information, call Yvonne Gregory Interiors at (843) 708-3535 or email her at yvonne@yvonnegregoryinteriors.com.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON THE CRAFTSMEN: Joe and Elizabeth Albano and Jackie Mazyck
THE CRAFT: Coastal Touch, owned by Joseph and Elizabeth Albano, specializes in custom sweetgrass merchandise, particularly drawer pulls and knobs. Today, Joe and Liz are working with one of the weavers, Jackie Mazyck, whose focus is creating smaller woven sweetgrass pieces to fulfill an order for Bird Decorative Hardware & Bath.
THE BACKSTORY: After relocating to Charleston several years ago and attending countless craft shows, Joe and Liz fell in love with sweetgrass baskets and, from there, Joe got the idea to start incorporating a small-weave method into a drawer knob. The final product took four years to master, but with the help of Jackie and two other weavers (Adell and Annette) the team is able to fabricate a myriad of unique, custom hardware.
As a child, Jackie learned how to weave sweetgrass into baskets and over the years, she honed her craft into an intricate art form. She begins each piece by selecting sweetgrass and combining it with pine or palm, depending on what the order specifies. Each blend results in a unique look for the center of the knob or drawer pull. Once she has finished her weaving, Joe (who designed the knobs and pulls) works with Charleston Hardware to select the hardware designated to pair with the sweetgrass. Variations include nickel, brass, and oil-rubbed bronze. Next, a dab of industrial adhesive is applied to the hollowed hardware, and Joe or Liz pops the sweetgrass into place. Each piece is carefully stored in a foam container for delivery to local shops, like Bird Decorative Hardware & Bath.
For more information, call Bird Decorative Hardware & Bath at (843) 577-5440 or visit birddecorativehardware.com. To learn about the knobs, call Coastal Touch at (843) 606-0788 or visit coastaltouch.com.

H2OME Mosquito Menace With abundant sunshine, fragrant gardens, and endless beaches, it’s no wonder so many people love the Lowcountry’s salty coastal environment. Fiber-Seal of the Lowcountry
How can Crosby Creations Custom Home Design help homeowners ?
Why is it important to use native plants in landscape design?
How does Fiber-Seal of the Lowcountry protect fabrics and upholstery?
“Typically, people come to us after they have already purchased land. The next step is to get a tree and topographical survey. From there, we can create a home design and walk them through the entire process—from concept to handing over the plans to the builder. We can handle the site planning and recommend surveyors, landscape architects, engineers, and builders. We draw everything in 3D, which truly helps our clients visualize their future home. Desiging a house should not be a stressful process; it should be exciting and enjoyable. We sincerely enjoy what we do and focus on the satisfaction of our customers.”
“Using native plants is definitely our strength. I’ve always focused on native plants. It’s been instilled in me since my childhood in rural Ohio, where I was surrounded by meadows and creeks. That’s where I played. We have a term we often use: aesthetic ecology. It means we are thinking about the aesthetics in a well-designed plan, but we’re also thinking about the ecology of the area and the sense of place. We use plants of Charleston in order to respect the microclimates, rather than unbalance them with foreign flora. ”
“We’re a fabric protection service, which means we are called into homes, offices, hotels, or any place where there are fine fabrics and rugs, to apply a protective sealant to them. We supply the homeowner or a facility’s manager with a kit that contains simple instructions for handling minor spots. The reason our customers keep coming back to us is because if they do have a spill, they can call us anytime. There’s no charge for what we call emergency service calls. We’ll come as often as they need us to make those red wine stains from that great party the night before disappear.”

Building Blocks
Builder: Chris Harper
What was the scope of this Kiawah Island remodel? The home was actually completely bare when the homeowners purchased it. The previous owners had gutted it, so we had a clean slate to work with, giving us the ability to transform it into anything we wanted. Our clients desired to convert the little cottage into a beautiful beach bungalow.
What’s your favorite element of the completed home? My team and I love the way the kitchen worked out. Normally, in a smaller cottage, we install a peninsula-style island. Here, the homeowners wanted it to stand alone, so we were able to work that into the design for them.
What other local companies helped you out with this project? We worked with Campbell’s Hardwood Floors for the whole home. Jilco Kitchen and Bath partnered with us for the bathroom and kitchen cabient installations, and we directed the homeowners to shop at Signature Appliance Center for their refrigerator and range.
What advice do you have for homeowners seeking to build or renovate? It’s important to have a vision of what you want. Working with a builder, architect, or interior designer, establish a plan and stick to it as closely as possible. This will help to keep your project within the timeline and budget. For more information, call Harper Construction at (843) 737-4745 or visit chrisharperconstruction.com.

Architect: Christopher F. Caponigro, AIA Credentials: As a kid in fifth grade, Christopher was already sketching houses on every piece of paper he could find. Now, with over 30 years of experience, Chris manages his own firm on Daniel Island.
What are the unique features of this project? The rotunda entryway is the first hint at the theme of the house, which was designed for entertaining. Both upstairs and downstairs have two powder rooms for guests, keeping all the bedroom suites private. I really like how we planned the porches to connect with multiple spaces throughout the home so that, as an elevated house, the interior doesn’t feel restricted.
Why was it important for the homeowners to consult an architect for the design of their house? I'm a residential designer in South Carolina and a registered AIA architect in Colorado. The most important aspect for all homeowners, including this couple, is the peace of mind they can expect when dealing with an architect who has many years of experience. This couple wanted to take advantage of the lot’s potential, so we made sure all the views were utilized and each space was functional.
What were some of the challenges you overcame while designing this home? The homeowners and I worked together to balance the site’s specific constraints, maneuver the architectural review board's requirements, navigate flood-zone implications, and stay within the budget. All of these challenges are fairly common when building a home in Charleston, which can be very complicated and often overwhelming for homeowners trying to tackle it on their own. Inspired Interiors
Company: Lauren M. Creative Credentials: With a degree in interior design from the University of Arkansas, a certification from the National Council of Interior Design Qualification, and 14 years of experience, Lauren opened her own firm in Charleston: Lauren M. Creative.
What was the goal of this bathroom design? I strove to create a space that feels clean and classic as soon as you walk into the room. The home originally had the sinks on the opposite sides of the room, lower ceilings, a small shower, a transom window, and a built-in tub. I immediately felt claustrophobic in the space, so I created three separate focal points to provide openness and symmetry.
How can quality interior design help homeowners stay organized? Design is not only about form, but also function. I encourage homeowners to look at their space and ask, “Does this really work for me?” If a home is already built, there are changes we can make immediately to the design to help with functionality. With a newconstruction project, homeowners should think about items they use everyday and exactly where they’re going to put each one. By designing with function in mind from the beginning, a homeowner will undoubtedly find staying organized to be less of a challenge.
Why is it important to hire an interior designer for a project? There is a common misconception that interior designers cost too much and will exceed a client’s budget with unnecessary items for the home. It’s actually the opposite. If you have the right interior designer, he or she will offer advice about how to stay within budget while still getting the look you love. Furthermore, designers can help you avoid costly mistakes when it comes to a new-construction or renovation project. In those scenarios, you can’t afford not to hire an interior designer! Looking Back, Planning Ahead

osh and Jean Soper moved from Richmond, Virginia to Daniel Island in 2007 when Josh’s company transferred him to the Lowcountry. They purchased a new coastal-style home that was nearly complete. Although they loved the house, the Sopers and their three daughters were outgrowing the space. They chose to stay on Daniel Island (because they enjoy the atmosphere of the neighborhood) and build a new home more appropriately customized to their needs with the help of longtime friend and local builder Ryan Butler of SHELTER. Knowing pretty clearly what they loved and disliked about their first Daniel Island home, the Sopers had a vision in place for the new house. The coastal charm of the original home carried

over to the second one, and Ryan, in collaboration with Alison Ramsey Architects, incorporated shiplap and plenty of light into the structure. Ryan explains, “The home is very airy with plenty of coastal aspects, like white oak floors and board-and-batten elements in the dining room. The white cabinets and countertops in the kitchen give that space a clean, bright feeling.” With a passion for interior design, Jean decorated the living spaces with seaside hues. She admits, “I was a little sad when the project was over; I really loved doing it.” The view of the neighboring marsh—visible from the front door beyond the two-story-high shiplap wall in the foyer—completes the coastal look. Considering the portions of the old house that weren’t quite
right, Jean and Josh worked with Ryan and the team to make one important change: reconfiguring the bedrooms. In the old home, all of the bedrooms were located upstairs, which worked well when the Sopers’ children were very young. At this house, the homeowners chose to place the master downstairs and give their three girls a space of their own upstairs. “We felt like they were at an age where they could all be upstairs and Josh and I could quietly enjoy our space downstairs,” notes Jean. Each girl’s suite was decorated and designed to suit her personality—a teal room with bunk beds, a purple room with twin beds and elephant décor, and a ballerinainspired pink room (with a built-in barre) for the youngest.

However, this change in the floor plan is not just practical for the family today. It carries with it a long-term vision. Josh and Jean hope to be in this home for many decades. The first-floor master suite will allow them to age comfortably, while the upstairs bedrooms will give each of their girls a room to herself when they are all grown up and return home to visit. Jean adds, “There’s even a third floor that’s currently unfinished. The plan is to turn that into a bunkroom one day to hold grandchildren. When we were

harleston’s appreciation for historical preservation caught Dr. Patricia Blanton’s eye the first time she visited the city. Originally from Dallas, Texas, she has spent her life curating beautiful antiques and artwork to fill her home with a myriad of stories. Today, she lives South of Broad in a charming brick home constructed in 1959. The original façade of the house was fabricated from nineteenth-century bricks that once served as a wall for the nextdoor property. This story drew Patricia to the home. “I wanted to live in the historic district of Charleston and this home has such a neat story—

I love to tell it,” she proclaims. The structure needed some modernizing, but she wanted the overall historical look of the house to remain intact. To carry out her vision and transform the interior, she brought in Travis Arnett of Arnett Construction. Travis worked closely with Patricia’s architect, Jerry Coleman from Memphis, Tennessee, and her interior designer, Alan Smith (who flew all the way from London to design Dr. Blanton’s home). Patricia had three main requests for the renovation of the interior beyond keeping its old-world charm; she wanted to
plan around her extensive art collection, increase the storage space, and incorporate more windows to maximize the natural light in the home. Travis explains, “The windows were re-trimmed with custom pieces that display more historical aspects, like beaded moulding and back-bands. The renovation also included RetroFoam installation in the exterior walls, spray foam in the interior walls, and removing any asbestos. Then, we got creative in how we added space to the interior; we didn’t want to compromise the original floor plan or the look of the exterior.” Travis installed built-

Refreshing Remodel After waiting for sixteen years to remodel her bathroom, homeowner Dana Todd finally has her dream oasis.

rowing up in historical homes will develop an eye for wellconstructed, classically beautiful domiciles. That’s exactly what Dana Todd has—an appreciation for the details that make ancestral abodes stand out from the rest. When it came time for her family to build in the early 2000s, she knew exactly what she wanted her residence to look like. She modeled the home with a vintage theme in almost every way. However, over the years, she realized that her bathroom didn't quite fit into her vision for the rest of the home and didn't provide the function she needed.

When Dana met with Pam McPeak, ASID, owner of Southern Places, she was ready to tear everything out of her bathroom and start from scratch. “The bathroom had a decent amount of space,” says Pam. “Dana and her husband just needed more functional space.” Pam suggested a slightly different approach. Instead of tearing out the flooring and the lovely pedestal sinks, which are reminiscent of older, sophisticated homes, Pam thought it would keep the continuity of Dana’s style, if they worked with those aspects. She had a custom cabinet built to fit between the sinks and a special flat pullout surface for Dana

to use for her makeup (a space-saving alternative to a countertop). It was important for Dana to keep her classic claw-foot tub as part of the bathroom design, so the duo focused on updating the shower. She and Pam decided to remove the acrylic stall and replace it with custom tile featuring a smaller, iridescent accent for interest. To draw attention to the tub, they installed a crystal chandelier. After swapping the small beadboard on the walls for a wider option and adding a hint of color, the bathroom was nearly complete. There was
just one thing missing. Pam and Dana, during their efforts to find all the necessary accents for the new master bath, discovered a beautiful rug. “Every room needs a splash of color,” proclaims Pam. “Rather than adding art to the wall, we added it to the floor.” The floral rug completes the circle of the room, so that attention is drawn from the shower to the tub and the chandelier, over to the cabinets and sinks, and then to the floor. v

siderations had to be made for the aging couple. Dennis and Jan had quite a bit of help designing the perfect house for both their current lifestyle and anticipated future needs. Their daughter is an architect, and she originally began the floor plan. Because she was licensed out-ofstate and unfamiliar with South Carolina’s codes, she passed the project on to Jodi Crosby of Crosby Creations Custom Home Design, whom the Murrays met through their builder, Tommy Priester of Priester’s Custom Contracting. Working with the Murrays’ daughter and Tommy, Jodi developed the floor plan and elevations to match Dennis and Jan’s vision for the home, which included provisions for aging comfortably. Jodi reveals, “When I design for a couple that is of retirement age, I always want to make sure that they’re not going to have to retrofit their house if their mobility decreases.” For this home, Jodi incorporated wider hallways and doorways, a first-floor master suite, and an elevator. “We rarely use it now,” Jan says of the elevator, “but at some point, it’s going to be very important.” These features will make growing older a bit simpler and prolong (or in some cases eliminate) the need for assisted living. Just because this home boasts aging-inplace features, though, does not mean that it is lacking beauty. The house is a flawless mix between contemporary and Lowcountry. Modern art installations blend with rich, natural hardwood floors, and a progressive stair tower meshes with marsh views and sweeping porches. The design matches the look and lifestyle of the homeowners, and that is truly the goal. Jodi concludes, “I come up with ideas, but if the homeowners don’t like them, we revisit those ideas until they do. CH+D • Spring 2016

Mastering the Grill The perfect recipe for getting the most out of Charleston’s brilliant weather.

T
o some, outdoor living means lounging on the beach, kayaking through the marsh, or sipping tea on the back porch. To one homeowner, the term outdoor living means being able to enjoy every moment of Charleston’s famous weather. After building his home on Isle of Palms, this particular homeowner approached Ken Good and his team at Palmetto Outdoor Kitchens to accomplish this goal. He wanted long-lasting cabinetry and the ability to cook in a myriad
of ways with minimal appliances. Furthermore, he desired to enjoy the cooler nights by an outdoor fire. When he and the design team met to draw up plans and determine which features he wanted, the choices were easy. The first step was to select cabinetry. This homeowner picked a high-density polyethylene material by Wherever Cabinetry. Then, it was time to ask the big question—which grill is the best fit? “He chose a dualfuel Alfresco grill, which is one of the few on the market that can cook with gas, charcoal, and wood,” describes Ken. The grill doesn’t clog up the kitchen’s design with too many pieces of equipment and is efficient on all forms of fuel. The other aspects of the outdoor kitchen, including the sink, refrigerator, and a giant burner to the left of the grill are also made by Alfresco. The extra-large burner, known as the Vespa Power Burner, is “great for those big pots full of delicious Lowcountry Boil,” Ken explains. “In fact,” he adds, “it’s useful for big pans too. Just last week, the
homeowner sent me a picture of him cooking breakfast on it.” With a gas-lit, linear Napoleon fireplace just feet away and plenty of space for entertaining or relaxing, this homeowner has just the right balance for the best kind of outdoor living— the kind that lasts all year long. v For more information, call Palmetto Outdoor Kitchens at (843) 216-0006 or visit palmettooutdoorkitchens.com.

Ed Marinaro with his Wife Tracy York Marinaro in Their Well-Appointed Dining Room on Daniel Island

Professional football player and Hill Street Blues actor Ed Marinaro and his wife, Tracy, chat about their family’s move from Los Angeles to Daniel Island. Story by Megan J. Busch | Photography by Patrick Brickman & Margaret Rambo
E
d Marinaro has a face you cannot forget, especially if you watched him play Officer Joe Coffey in the 1980s inner-city cop drama Hill Street Blues. I was born just after the final season of that show, but Ed is making his mark on
the Millennial Generation just as he did Generation Y with the television series Blue Mountain State, which was recently reimagined as a full-length film. But before the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Ed was a rough-and-tumble professional football player, sporting jerseys for the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Jets, and the Seattle Seahawks between 1972 and 1977 after his tenure as a Cornell Big Red halfback. He played in two Superbowl games and finished as the second runner-up for the 1971 Heisman Trophy. Along his journey, he dated and married Tracy York, an internationally known fitness expert recognized for her instructional films (which have sold over three million copies) and her professional training programs in Los Angeles. Tracy, Ed, and their son, Eddie, packed their belongings several years ago and moved east, settling on Daniel Island. They invited the Charleston Home + Design team over to talk about the old times and the new and, of course, to catch a glimpse inside their chic marsh-front home.

(above) The kitchen is one of Ed and Tracy’s favorite rooms; they enjoy cooking and entertaining. They opted for no wall-mounted cabinets and instead installed a vast pantry with additional cooking appliances behind the left-hand wall. (right) The blue chairs in the living room are Tracy’s prized pieces of home décor. A friend found the vintage seats for her in California, and she reupholstered them with a navy velvet material and a white trim.
Ed, you’ve had quite a career from your time in the NFL to your transition into acting. Was it always a dream of yours to play professional football? Ed: After college at Cornell, I was drafted into the Minnesota Vikings. I think that like every kid, I dreamt about being a professional player in every sport I played, but it was very different when I was starting out in sports. I thought about pro football, but not for the same reasons that kids today think about it—being rich. What are the differences between football now and the sport in the 1970s?
126
CH+D • Spring 2016
Ed: There wasn’t all the hoopla and the glamour. When I played, it was much more low key. Now, everything’s about money. The guys who play today literally make more in a game than I made in my whole career—a lot more. The money didn’t motivate us. We loved the game and the excitement. Don’t get me wrong, being a professional athlete, even back then, had its perks. A lot of nice girls wanted to meet me [laughs]. The players were celebrities, but not the way it is today. I paid 185 dollars a month for my first apartment in Minnesota. It was close to the stadium, which was good because I was new to Minneapolis, and I didn’t want to get lost [laughs]. But, I lived with regular working guys, and
there wasn’t a big separation between the players and fans. The guys would say, “Hello” and “Good luck this weekend,” and I knew their faces. Really, what me and the other guys who were playing hoped for was that when our careers were over, we could find a job—selling tires, selling insurance, whatever. Some of my teammates became chiropractors and CPAs. And you became an actor. How did you move from the football field to the sets of Hollywood? Ed: I actually started my acting career when I was still playing football. I got discovered, and someone brought me to Hollywood to do a screen test. I

studied acting during one of my off seasons in LA, and when I left the Vikings, I went to New York and played for the Jets. I took acting classes while I was there. When my football career was over, I moved out to Hollywood. The rest was luck. Preparation meets opportunity, but also so much luck. I was advantaged in that I had an agent already, and I had a Screen Actors Guild card that every actor needs before he can get a job or an agent. Acting is so subjective, like art. If you look at a painting on the wall, you may say, “That’s beautiful.” Someone else will say, “Ugh.” There are terrible actors, who are superstars, and wonderful actors, who have real talent, can’t even get a job.
You had a short-lived role—eleven episodes—on Laverne & Shirley in 1980, but was Hill Street Blues the first show that actually made you more of a household name? Ed: Yes. When I started working in TV in the ’80s, there were only three networks. If you weren’t watching Hill Street Blues on Thursday night at ten o’clock, there were only two other choices. And since then, you’ve made appearances on Falcon Crest, The Twilight Zone, Grand, Sisters, Champs, 8 Simple Rules, Days of Our Lives, Drop Dead Diva, and most recently Blue Mountain State, in which you played Coach Marty Daniels. This year, you released Blue Mountain
State: The Rise of Thadland as a full-length movie. Tell me a little about the show’s transition from television to film. Tracy: The show Blue Mountain State went from Spike TV to Netflix, and it has kind of become this cult-show phenomenon. To make the movie, the producers raised money on Kickstarter because there was such a demand for more content. Ed: We raised nearly two-million dollars. Our goal was one-and-a-half million, and we raised more than that in thirty days. It’s a fun film. It’s an R-rated, crazy college, Animal House type of movie. It’s very funny in a raunchy way. It was filmed in Wilm-

ington, NC. We were set to film here in Charleston, and we were ready to shoot it here, only to find out that the film commission had not approved the script. We had to change a couple of lines to bring it down to an R-rating. We ended up going up to Wilmington, where the city officials accepted it openly. After many years in Hollywood, you are now calling Charleston home. How do you continue to work on projects based in Los Angeles while living here? Ed: Because of technology, I can work remotely. I do auditions for roles, and Tracy, with her iPad, is my director. I audition, she sends it to my agent, and it’s done. Tracy: It’s very common for people to put their auditions in a digital format today.
130
CH+D • Spring 2016
The few auditions in which they wanted Ed in person didn’t justify staying in LA. So, what drove you to Charleston from Los Angeles? Ed: I never saw myself living most of my life in LA. I always hoped I could work in LA, but live someplace else. For years, that never quite happened because I was working all the time. Tracy and I met at the gym where she was working. We dated for a long time, and when we got married, we had a son. That’s when we seriously started realizing we didn’t want him to grow up in Los Angeles. It was just not a good place at all for our kid. We sensed that Eddie didn’t want to live in Hollywood Hills, where he couldn’t go outside and play with the neighbors.
We were looking for a better quality of life for each one of us. Here, on Daniel Island, we can golf, and we can fish. Eddie has access to the creeks, the parks, and all the other kids who live on the island. It just didn’t make sense for us to stay in LA, where we didn’t have these things. We lived twelve miles from the beach, but we never went because it was such an ordeal to get there with the traffic. Here, we’ll drive over to Isle of Palms without thinking twice about it. Everything is simpler here. For example, one of my friends was here with his wife for a few days. I took him to the airport this morning. Do you know what time I got back? I picked him up at nine o’clock, and I was back on the island at nine thirty. That doesn’t mean much to you guys, but in LA, that would have been a two-hour trip.
(above) The pool is the Marinaros’ summer hangout spot. Between it and the adjacent outdoor bar, they have all the makings for a perfect summer evening soirée.
Tracy: Montreal was really the experience that helped us pull the trigger, though. When Ed was working on Blue Mountain State, we would leave Los Angeles and go up to Montreal to shoot for three months at a time. We would live in this place called the Old Port, and we had a great little city life. We didn’t miss Los Angeles one bit. My son loved it. We took him out of LA, put him in Montreal with the FrenchCanadian kids, and sent him to camp at Camp McGill. He had the best time. And we made friends. Once I felt like we could be happy outside of LA, we said, “You know what? We can live elsewhere.” Charleston has so many niches and neighborhoods. How did you wind up on Daniel Island?
Ed: I flew out here, I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express, and I got a Realtor. I spent three days looking all around. I went to Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s, I’On, everywhere. Then my Realtor brought me here. I’m a golfer, so having the course is nice. What sold me, though, was that I went to the elementary school, and I saw 200 bikes parked outside. I said, “This is the place.”
Even realizing the downsides of LA, do you miss the glamour of it? Ed: The biggest difference for us is that I probably look at my weather app five times a day [laughs]. When you live in Southern California, you know it’s always going to be sunny and seventy everyday.
That following summer, we rented out our house in Hollywood Hills, and we bought three one-way tickets to Charleston. We had movers come to move all our stuff and bring it here.
Tracy: That’s really the biggest thing we miss—the weather. We have tons of friends in Los Angeles who won’t leave because of the weather, but I said, “I am not going to stay in this town with the kind of quality of life we have as a family just because it’s sunny.” This is a better place for us—for our family.
Tracy: Daniel Island is great for Eddie. He can get on his bike and go see his friends. In Los Angeles, parents micromanage their kids because they have to. Here, we don’t have to do that.
You two rented for a few years on Daniel Island, and then you decided to build. How did you come to a conclusion about the style you wanted?

(above right) The front porch is cheerful and inviting with yellow Adirondacks, teal lanterns, and a bold royal-blue entry door.
Tracy: We originally thought that we would buy a home, but we couldn’t find one that we liked. Ed: Having never built a house before, the two of us initially thought we were in conflict about what we wanted. Tracy: We would walk into all of these houses that had coffered ceilings and butler pantries and moulding on moulding on moulding. He would say, “It’s just so busy.” I was hearing him say, “That’s expensive.” Ed: She thought I just wanted to build a cheap house [laughs]. Tracy: When we pulled up [architect]

Heather Wilson’s website and saw one of her houses, I said, “This is it.” And he said, “Yes. That’s what I mean— simple with clean lines, not cheap.” Once you were on the same page with the overall look, what details of the home design were important to each of you? Ed: I like efficiency, and I wanted to use every space. I didn’t want decorative rooms that we didn’t use that I was going to air condition [laughs]. For example, the front of this house was supposed to have a wrap-around porch. And I said, “I don’t want a wrap-around porch at the front of the house because the only person who’s
going to use that porch is the UPS guy when he drops off packages.” It didn’t make sense to spend a lot of money there. I’d rather spend my money in the back of the house where we actually spend time. Tracy: For me, the kitchen was important. We spend eighty-percent of our time there. Ed loves to cook, and we entertain about twice a week. When we lived in Hollywood Hills, we had a see-through fireplace. I loved that concept, so I wanted it in this house. And the shiplap; that makes me happy. You can’t go wrong with it. My goal was a big, kind-ofmodern farmhouse mixed with a beach house—a Lowcountry house.
Ed: Tracy did everything design wise in this house. I added a few details, like the cabana. At this stage in my life, I want my friends to come and visit, but at a certain point in everyone’s life, no one really wants to stay inside somebody’s house. They’d rather stay in a hotel. We built a cabana that is completely separate. Our guests have their own privacy. That was my contribution. And that little metal border around the kitchen; that was my idea. I’m not being modest; Tracy did everything else here.
is being a great mom. She takes that responsibility seriously. Eddie is a wonderful kid, and he loves her to death. I enjoy watching them together. He depends on her for everything, and she spoils the crap out of him. Tracy: I’ve spent twenty-five years motivating people and working on my career. I’m still passionate about teaching and love the courses I lead at Eco Fitness. I also like being
able to slow down a little bit here and enjoy my role as a mom and a wife. We don’t have any regrets about moving here. Everyone on Daniel Island seems to have a story, and everyone comes here wanting to make friends and to create a good life. That’s what we’re doing. Ed: It’s been just what we wanted. Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves because we realize how much fun we’ve been having here. ✈
Did you work with an interior designer, Tracy, or was this your concept? Tracy: Once we built the home, I wanted to refresh a lot of our furniture and décor. I used a lot of items from our LA home, and I purchased some furniture and accents from Charleston Revisions, Domain Interiors, and even Craigslist. I went to Domain Interiors, where I met Bobbi Jo Engelby. I loved her store, and I liked that she supported local artists and businesses. She helped me choose many of the pieces throughout the house. I walked in originally wanting to buy one item, and ended up with so much more. Well, the house has come together beautifully, and you guys are easing into island life. What’s on the horizon for your family? Ed: We still feel like we’re finding our mojo here. We want to get into a groove. We’ve only been in this house a year. I lived in LA for thirty-five years; Tracy was born in LA. For us to leave there and completely and totally adapt to this new place is a big change. Everything we ever knew, we left. I don’t have to work, but I just feel like since I still can that I want to. Actors don’t retire. They can’t remember their lines anymore, or they die. And Tracy
Ed and Tracy sit in their living room, which features a sliding barn door, shiplap walls, and Tracy’s favorite blue chairs.

(facing page, above right) Cynthia suggested a wood beaded chandelier to contrast the blue chairs and dark wood of the kitchen table. (facing page, below left) Every lady deserves a styled space to prepare for the day, so Cynthia fashioned a vanity with a zebra fabric stool and added lovely, collectable china to the built-in shelving. C
lean lines and modern accents were two of the main goals of a couple constructing a vacation home on Isle of Palms. Knowing they needed a designer’s eye to perfect the look and help with selections while they were living out of town, the homeowners approached Cynthia Zimmerman, ASID, because of her reputation for livable, beautiful spaces. “I met with the couple to talk about some of the design concepts, which they, in turn, took to the architect. We worked on creating open spaces and maximizing the views of the surrounding marsh and Intracostal Waterway,” says Cynthia. “Before the sheetrock was installed, I came in to help make sure the space planning was in order.” Then it was time to start picking out tile and fixtures. When it came time to design the kitchen and bathrooms, the tile and

fixtures played a big role in accomplishing the desired result. Together, Cynthia and the homeowners fashioned a cool, airy theme for the abode that incorporated hues from nature. An open floor plan, varying degrees of blue accents, large windows, and silver tile in the kitchen generate a relaxing atmosphere. Stainless-steel tile was chosen for the backsplash, which was designed to mimic fish scales. The shape and texture of the tile also creates the illusion of movement along the wall and brings the silvery-blue theme into the kitchen. To add geometric symmetry, Cynthia accented the fireplace on the opposite side of the house with a range of light and dark tile in the same shape. The rest of the house maintains the blue palette, though each room var-
ies a bit on the exact hue. “Nature in general, especially the ocean, the sky, and the waters around the house, doesn’t stick to just one shade of blue, so the homeowners and I worked on imitating the way nature shifts from day to day.” After making all the tile, fixture, and décor decisions, Cynthia helped the homeowners choose a wall color—“Beach Glass” by Benjamin Moore. It may seem a bit unorthodox, but Cynthia says choosing a wall color last often helps make the choice easier and ensures that it complements the rest of the home. Now the homeowners have a relaxing haven for their frequent retreats to the Lowcountry. ✥ For more information, call Zimmerman Interiors at (843) 971-6880 or visit zimmermaninteriors.net.

hen they purchased their home off of Exit 194 in Summerville, Marc and Jennifer Collins knew that they had a bit of work on their hands. Marc describes, “When we first bought the home, it was an empty shell. It had good bones, but we knew we had some updating to do.” They chose the Summerville location because of the thriving Dorchester II school district for their growing boys and the vastness of the land. With some creativity and a lot of time carved out between developing new recipes for his patrons at Circa 1886 and whipping up supper at home, Chef Marc spent his time re-crafting the structure with Jennifer. Many of the projects Marc and Jennifer tackled on their own, like repainting the walls, refinishing the cabinets, and replacing the carpet with hardwood floors. For some projects, though, they realized that calling in the experts was more than necessary. “The popcorn ceilings were the first to go,” recalls Marc. “I started to do them, I did one room, and I thought, This is awful. So we hired a professional to do the rest of the house.”

In the kitchen, they refinished the cabinets, installed new countertops, purchased stainless appliances, and updated the backsplash.
As they began renovations, they also realized that the bay window was not supported as it should be and posed a structural problem. A local, experienced contractor replaced the windows and the foundation beneath them. In the kitchen, the Collinses installed natural-stone countertops, incorporated a tile backsplash, and purchased brand-new stainless-steel appliances. Believe it or not, this is the chef ’s very first gas range at home, and it’s his favorite gadget in the entire house. Orange Le Creuset cookware adds a pop of color to the otherwise neutral kitchen. Once the major renovations were complete, Jennifer set out to decorate. To stick within her budget, she repurposed some of the older items they had, included family heirlooms in the design, and spent money on several new key pieces, like the rustic metal barstools in the kitchen. There’s still more work to be done as they make their way through renovating the home’s bedrooms and bathrooms, but for now, the two are more than pleased with their progress—with the look and with the price tag.
(above) These metal stools are Jennifer’s favorites. She found them online and knew they were the perfect pieces for the kitchen’s bar. (right) Two sets of built-ins flank the brick fireplace. The couple painted them by hand, adding a pop of color inside each shelf.

Specialty Products The manufacturing process used by KBRS Microfactory to create custom shower basins is one of the most cutting-edge on the market. Implementing materials commonly used in surfboard production, the company has created a completely watertight base for tile showers. A bonus? Unlike other methods of creating a shower basin, KBRS’s product is ready for tile immediately after installation, which helps to keep your project on time.

Sometimes, it’s neither in your budget nor your timeline to tackle an entire bathroom remodel. With a tub or shower overlay, you can have a whole new look by the time you return home from a day at work. So, if your house is sporting one of those pastel mint-green tubs so popular in the fifties, a simple overlay could be the solution to your dated décor woes.
