very time I look through my kitchen window or step onto my back deck, I think, Wouldn’t it be nice if I had a pool? Or I could completely redo the landscaping. Oh, what about a fence around the whole yard so that my pup can run leash-free? My backyard is a work in progress, but I always have ideas. Putting together this issue fed my desire for an outdoor paradise even more than usual—perhaps it was the alluring not-too-warm-or-too-cold spring weather or the fact that my husband and I finally own a home. Either way, I’ve discovered that the outside of the house is nearly

fine art. She didn’t want to become an artist herself, but navigating the business side of the profession appealed to her immensely. So the Greenville native set her goals high. She earned her master’s degree from the renowned Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York. Then, she worked to become a certified appraiser of not only art, but also antiques; she is a member of both the Appraisers Association of America (AAA) and the International Society of Appraisers (ISA). Perhaps, however, you may be more familiar with seeing her face on PBS; Miller appeared on Antiques Roadshow and more recently, rummaging through flea markets on Market Warriors. MEET + GREET

Charleston’s Grand Gallery My Rooms Furniture Gallery has been a leading name in the Southeast’s furniture industry since 2013 with vast showrooms in Mt. Pleasant, Columbia, and several towns in Georgia. The company's goal is to revolutionize how homeowners shop for furniture. CH+D chatted with Scott Blalock, who is the Director of Business Development.

What is your background in the furniture business? Scott: Before we launched My Rooms Furniture Gallery, which is our retail division, I was involved with our parent company, Furniture Rentals, Inc. My Rooms Furniture Gallery has four showrooms as well as a large online presence to make shopping as convenient for homeowners as possible. What experience can homeowners expect when they shop at My Rooms Furniture Gallery? Scott: We offer a huge selection of furniture for each customer’s personal style—anything from Southern coastal to transitional to contemporary. More and more customers are also taking advantage of our custom order options and special online items. Because our furniture displays in our showroom change frequently, customers can always expect updated selections. Do you have any advice for customers considering new furniture? Scott: Buying furniture is such an important step in pulling together the style of your home, so hastiness and guesswork can sometimes make the general experience unpleasant. I always suggest that customers bring fabric swatches, pillows, or paint samples with them when they shop to avoid any of that guesswork. For more information, call My Rooms Furniture Gallery at (800) 338-8534, visit myroomsfurnituregallery.com, or stop in to shop at 1169 Chuck Dawley Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant.

HE SAID /HE SAID

The Ins and Outs of Building and Renovating

Sam and Jason Fowler, the father-son team at Sea Island Builders, face off about the intricacies of constructing custom dwellings.

He Said:

He Said:

Sam Said: Spray foam insulation is probably the single most eco-friendly, energyefficient thing you can do when building a new house. We highly recommend using it.

Most Efficient Eco-Friendly Upgrade?

Jason Said: There have been huge advances in solar technology. We have a friend who installed panels on his house, and his utility bills are near net zero in the moderate months.

Sam Said: I think a first-floor master—on the same level as the kitchen and living areas—is preferable. This arrangement is more convenient and saves a lot of walking up and down stairs everyday, especially as homeowners begin to age.

Master Suite: Upstairs or Downstairs?

Jason Said: Upstairs master all the way! To make the design perfect, consider a stacked washer and dryer in the master closet to eliminate lugging laundry around the house.

Sam Said: It's really a matter of personal preference. I like the more natural look of real wood siding and cedar shake even though they require a little more maintenance.

Best Exterior Siding Option?

Jason Said: I'm a huge believer in materials that are durable and require the lowest maintenance. There are some great manufacturers of composite materials out there, such as CertainTeed and Azek. These products hold paint much longer than wood, do not rot or decay, and are hurricane resistant.

HOMEWORK

~ ~ Charleston Cabinets At Home with

Jay and Denise Floyd, owners of Charleston Cabinets, have been in the custom-cabinet business for nearly 24 years, aiming to provide Charleston homeowners with beautiful cabinetry for every room of the house. The couple

1

With a new home on the water, it was important to both Jay and Denise to design their kitchen in a way that balances their riverfront setting with timeless fashion. Denise chose a Kraftmaid "Rutherford" cabinet with full-overlay doors in a chocolate glaze. Jay staggered the heights of the cabinets to accent the long wall in the kitchen and added glass doors. A beautiful fish mosaic, created by Jay’s sister Sarah F. Mishoe, is proudly displayed as a focal point over the range as a nod to Jay’s passion for fishing.

2

The cabinets in the master bathroom are also Kraftmaid, one of Charleston Cabinets’s main suppliers. Since Denise loved the finish she chose for the kitchen so much, she put the same finish in the bathroom as well. She added antique framed mirrors to establish a traditionalstyle space dedicated to preparing for the day.

3

To match the counters in the bathroom, Jay and Denise installed an undermount tub with the same dark-green granite, which blends with the "Sea Salt" wall color. Jay finished the tub with a matching cherry cabinet panel, and Denise had a custom starfish-patterned Roman shade made to complement the coastal painting that Jay’s late grandmother gave to them. CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

THE CRAFTSMAN:

Stephen Wain of Wain Green Wood

THE CRAFT:

The Creation of Handmade Custom Woodcrafts

THE BACKSTORY:

Photography by Patrick Brickman

Stephen worked in the carpentry and restoration business for five years before branching out on his own. Now, he’s honing his craft; each consecutive table, stool, bench, or hutch he creates becomes just a little more perfect. He began his business with two goals in mind: to make quality lifetime furniture that is affordable for customers and to repurpose historic wood from the peninsula.

THE PROCESS:

On this particular day, Stephen worked on a custom table for a local customer. He first sorted through the wood he had on hand at his workshop, all acquired through connections with local builders and renovators working in downtown Charleston. He selected a heart-pine material dated earlier than the turn of the 20th Century. On all of his projects, he uses power tools—like band saws and table saws—to create the initial cuts. Then, he works by hand to join, plane, sand, fine tune, and finish the wood. He finished this piece, because of the unique knots, holes, and dents in the tabletop, with a thick epoxy resin, allowing those features to be seen while still providing a flat, smooth surface. Each table or custom piece takes roughly 25 to 30 hours of Stephen’s hand-craftsmanship. When complete, the piece of fine woodwork is delivered to the appropriate Lowcountry homeowner.

Seal of Approval Fiber Seal has been in the business of treating furniture with a signature, non-carcinogenic formula for 44 years to prevent staining and deterioration of fabrics. Bonnie Oulla, owner of Fiber Seal of the Lowcountry, invited CH+D to experience a day on the job with her and her team. 9:00am

Bonnie and the team gather for a regularly scheduled meeting to bring everyone up to speed on the jobs planned that day. They map locations and discuss the details of each piece of furniture that requires treatment with the stain-repelling sealant. Bonnie also makes sure that each technician has everything he or she needs, such as formulas, tools, and the stain-removal kits that they give to each customer. Each kit includes information about more than 30 types of spills and how to remove them.

Bonnie takes a trip out to Kiawah to meet with a new customer, explain the process of treating furniture with Fiber Seal’s patented sealer, determine the job size, talk about pricing, and schedule a treatment appointment. She then heads to an emergency service call (a red-wine spill), which Fiber Seal provides for no additional cost.

Bonnie visits a job in progress, making sure that the seal is applied properly and that the client has all the details he or she needs about the treatment process. It’s important to Bonnie to establish a relationship with each customer.

he cost of energy is constantly on the rise, and with it, the importance of modifying your home to reach a greater efficiency level grows immensely. One such solution that has boosted the green-building industry exponentially is installing solar panels. They generate electricity without any waste, pollution, or dependence on the earth’s depletable natural resources. Plus, with no moving parts and easy installation, solar panels are long-

A

s a highly renewable resource, bamboo is rising by leaps and bounds in the ranks of ecologically smart building materials. Its strength is comparable to hardwoods, but the regrowth rate in the forest is three to five years (instead of nearly twenty for hardwood trees). One of the biggest selling points, aside from being more ecofriendly, is the adaptability of bamboo as a flooring option— it doesn’t require as much subfloor prep work, it can be lain over a wider variety of bases, and it is less sensitive to water and temperature changes. From the mellow hues and colors to the widely varying grains, bamboo can match nearly any décor, which earns it major style points, too. Freedom to Flow In Charleston, there’s more than a slight chance that your home will flood, which makes purchasing the maximum amount of flood insurance the smartest first step in protecting your biggest investment. But the buck doesn’t stop there—coastal homes need more (and different) coverage than most basic homeowners policies provide. While a standard policy will typically cover damage or loss of personal possessions due to fire, theft, and vandalism, you’ll most likely want to choose a policy that covers a broader range of items. Make sure to add hail and wind coverage to your homeowner’s policy to shield your abode if it’s damaged by high winds, hail, or major storms. Excess Flood policies are also recommended to supplement the National Flood Insurance Program requirements.

For more information, call McKay Insurance at (843) 881-2229 or visit restinsuredcharleston.com.

Formidable Fabrics Living the salt life sounds pretty wonderful to most of us in the Lowcountry, and the key to a beautiful outdoor setting (besides the coastal views and boat trips) is vibrant, long-lasting fabric for outdoor furniture. Thanks to the advancements in outdoor fabric technology, enjoying our seaside locale is even more comfortable, easy, and radiant than before. Solutiondyed acrylics, which can withstand around 2,000 hours (or more) of direct sunlight without fading, are top-of-the-line when it comes to fabric choices. The process of dying the fabric before its woven provides the strength needed to withstand our coastal habitat.

As the longest operating pre-finishing company in the state, Carolina Machine Finishing strives to protect Lowcountry homes by coating exterior building products before they’re installed on a house. This means that each piece of siding, trim, decking, and porch flooring is sealed on all six sides of the board. We took a look at the benefits to see just why it’s worth spending a little extra dough.

Coastal Control

The wind, rain, sun, and salt of the Lowcountry’s coastline can do a bit of damage to the envelope of a home. Giving it an extra layer of protection helps to maintain your exterior finishes for a longer amount of time. The pre-finishing process applies any coating—paint, stain, or varnish—to all sides and ends of the building product to form a sealed surface protected from ultraviolet-light damage and moisture infiltration.

Lasting Looks

Ultraviolet rays and moisture often cause products to crack, peel, blister, and fade. A factory pre-finish minimizes these issues, thereby increasing the longevity of the product. Carolina Machine Finishing applies a thick coating to the whole surface area of each

82

board. This keeps your exterior looking chic for decades instead of merely years.

Money Matters

Because your home’s exterior continually looks nice, the need to repaint, restain, or refinish doesn’t arise nearly as often. Requiring less maintenance over time reduces the longterm upkeep costs of your home. Bonus? The coating process eliminates the need for a separate painting contractor to prime and paint your siding after application.

LEARNING THE LINGO

Taking Your Home’s Temperature: Learn these terms before purchasing a heating-and-air system. What is R-value? “R-value is the measurement of thermal resistance. R-values are ascribed to the insulation that is used in your home. A higher R-value indicates a higher effectiveness in the building’s insulation. Keep in mind, though, that a manufacturer's R-value applies only to properly installed insulation. If it’s not properly installed, the R-value will not be an accurate reflection of your home’s actual insulating properties.” Wesley Young, SC DET Auditor and Certified Thermographer Palmetto Home Energy Audit (843) 607-4442 • palmettohomeenergy.com

What is tonnage? “BTUs (British Thermal Units) convert into tonnage, which is used to determine the appropriate HVAC size for a home. To explain, there are 12,000 BTUs to a ton. In a newly constructed home (with higher efficiency insulation, windows, and doors), each ton of heating or air-conditioning power covers 800 square feet of living space. In older homes, one ton effectively conditions only about 600 square feet because of the lower insulating abilities of the building materials used in the past.” James Garren, General Manager Smith’s Heating and Air Conditioning (843) 552-3772 • smithshvac.com

What is a SEER rating? “SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It gives us the overall system efficiency on a seasonal basis. The higher the SEER, the more efficient your cooling system operates. The best way to think of it is that SEER for your HVAC unit is the same concept as the miles-per-gallon rating for your car, except in BTUs per watt. The minimum SEER rating, set by the Federal Government, is 14. If you have a unit installed prior to 2007, it is most likely a 12 or less. There can be big savings in upgrading from 10 or 12 SEER unit to a 14 SEER or higher.” Medd Box, Owner AirMax

Cynthia Zimmerman, ASID

Schneider Tree Care

Antiques Market

Why does a homeowner need an interior designer?

What are the warning signs that a tree is in danger?

What advice would you give to new antique shoppers?

“If homeowners want to build or renovate properly, I would always advise using an expert. When people design for themselves, there tends to be many more near misses. A good designer helps to forecast mishaps and can alleviate problems before they arise. Also, it is an advantage to get a fresh, unemotional eye on the project from a professional who works in the field everyday. ”

“One of the biggest signs that’s easiest to spot is dead wood—look for pieces of dead branches that are lying in your yard or the top of the tree beginning to die. Shelf mushrooms are another big sign that your tree is in danger. The fungi look like little shelves that go up the tree. They indicate decay in the trunk, and seeing those mushrooms would be a good cue to call an arborist.”

“The best that we can do is to offer shoppers sound advice, not our own opinion, about furniture or items that interest them. Everyone working here has his or her own area of expertise, and we want to share that. We don’t ever want to push shoppers into buying something that won’t work in their homes—like overdoing the MidCentury Modern style, for example. We want to help guide them into purchases that are the right fit for their houses.”

Building Blocks

Builder: Peter Oakes Company: Axon Homes Credentials: Peter was raised in the custom-homebuilding industry and later earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton. He has been honing his skills ever since and began Axon Homes in Ohio before bringing the business to the Lowcountry.

What is your background in construction? I grew up with construction in my blood. My father is an engineer and developer, while my mother is a custom homebuilder in Ohio. I worked in the family business as a kid, and since I had the opportunity to learn both sides of the industry, I discovered quickly that the construction side of things was the best fit for me.

What parts of this home illustrate your custom work? The parts of the home that best showcase its custom nature are the interior trim details, the cabinetry design, and the tile. The creation of these elements took a tremendous amount of time and care, including intense collaboration between the homeowner, the designer, and the tradesmen. The homeowner was involved in every small detail along the way.

What was the biggest challenge you faced as the builder of this house? The biggest challenge of the house was capturing an old-world aesthetic that still felt timeless and clean, rather than dated. Some things that helped blur this line were the custom hand-blown Italian chandeliers and the more transitional crystal light fixtures from Fine Art Lamps. The clean lines and transparency of these fixtures really helped lighten the heaviness of some of the more old-world features, including the reclaimed herringbone walnut floors in the master bathroom. Architects + Archetypes

Company: Architecture Plus Credentials: Tim Hilkhuijsen’s architectural career began in 1987. He is licensed in Washington DC, South Carolina, and Colorado; he is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the American Registered Architects, and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

What drew you to the profession? I was born in The Hague, Netherlands, and I lived in Ikeja, Nigeria and Jakarta, Indonesia before finally immigrating to the United States. Because I lived in so many different countries, I developed a vested interest in architecture; I was always fascinated by the various designs and structures presented to me.

What challenges did you face during the design and construction of this particular project? Our client had recently sold his business in the Upstate, and he was looking to build his dream home on Kiawah. The property was filled with oak trees that obstructed the beautiful Lowcountry river views, and therefore it was very challenging to lay out the interior spaces and maintain optimum views of the river.

What was the overall goal of this project? We wanted to provide the homeowner and his wife with a house that would function and meet the needs of their lifestyle. By creating finely crafted and detailed interior elements, we were able to design a signature home specifically tailored toward their articulate lifestyle. Maintaining an open living concept was also important, and incorporating cable railing helped to bring the outdoors in. Inspired Interiors

Designer: Bobbi Jo Engelby

What was your vision for this room in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Designer Showcase Home? We designed the upstairs sitting room at the Showhouse, which is the old parsonage for St. Johannes Lutheran Church. Because it is going to be a weekly rental venue for weddings and special events, we envisioned the room as an elegant space for gathering and relaxing. The walls, ceiling, and trim were all painted “Alabaster” so that the draperies, artwork, and furnishings would pop with color. Our color scheme was pulled from the original antique fireplace tiles in shades of green and amber. The 10-foot-tall drapery panels from Schumacher were the dramatic focus.

What aspects of this project stand out from other homes or locations you’ve designed? It was a delight to have a barebones room and basically no prerequisites, such as furniture or rugs, that had to be worked into the scheme. We were able to build the room exactly the way we wanted to—within our budget and with the help of several suppliers and contractors who donated in support of the wonderful fundraiser for musical scholarships.

What were the most challenging aspects of this project? There was a rather unattractive closet next to the fireplace. We removed the doors, and our talented decorative painter (New Look Finishes) faux finished the closet walls in a lovely watercolor style to transform the space into a desk or vanity area for guests. B

uilders know the tricks of the trade. They’ve tested—firsthand—every material. They’ve pored over countless architectural plans. They’re familiar with the best designs. When the time came for Cy Goforth of Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes to design and construct a Daniel Island house for his family, he took the ideas and knowledge gleaned from countless past projects to form the perfect living space. Cy notes, “The styles of my wife and I have changed significantly over the years from a traditional look to a more modern style. Being a builder has afforded us the opportunity to take advantage of that evolving style by incorporating new trends into our own home.” Even with a clear style and vision in mind and Cy’s years of expertise, the

98

CH+D • Summer 2015

project, like any other, wasn’t without its challenges. This house is situated on a large peninsula-shaped lot that is bound by the golf course on the eastern side and the marsh on the western side; both boundaries required stringent setbacks. “Designing the home within those setbacks while maximizing the multitude of views was the most challenging,” recalls Cy, “but the challenges and parameters ultimately defined the unique footprint, which is a true work of art.” After Cy completed the design and situated the home precisely on the Woodford Street lot, he and his wife could begin choosing finishes and furnishings. They selected professionalgrade Wolf and SubZero appliances, a double-tiered chandelier for the living room’s cupola, custom trim and wainscoting, an eight-inch-by-ten-inch

marble-topped kitchen island, and oversized random-width hardwood flooring milled locally by Paul Bolin. For the exterior, the Goforths created paradise with a saltwater-filtration pool surrounded by marine-grade polymer furniture from Backyard Retreats. The outdoor pieces are built to last and require minimal maintenance. Backyard Retreats owner Sharon Campbell expounds, “Polymers are the same color all the way through, so there’s minimal fading throughout the years. They need very little maintenance to keep them looking good. When the Goforths are ready to use them, they can simply rinse them to remove leaves or pollen.” This ease of use allows Cy to quickly transition from a busy day on the jobsite to a relaxing afternoon by the pool with his family.

Cy further remarks, “Sharon’s ability to transform a space is remarkable. She has a rare talent; she can take a blank canvas and turn it into a masterpiece.” With his top-choice items in place, Cy uses his home as a showcase for his work. It provides the ideal starting point for customers to see the quality and craftsmanship of Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes, demonstrating that Cy and his team strive for excellence in all homes they design and construct. As for the Goforths’ future in this house, Cy knows that one day it

Lake-House Allure Husband-and-wife duo Tommy and MeLinda Welch, with the help of their team at 1st Class Painting and Restoration, transformed a 1950s bungalow into a bright, modern lake house.

I

magine a humble house on a grand plat near Lake Moultrie, often overlooked and underestimated. Tommy Welch of 1st Class Painting and Restoration saw the potential in the 1955 bungalow as well as the surrounding terrain. “We bought the house from a guy who was

102

going to restore it, but then he purchased a waterfront property instead,” says Tommy. “There was no way we could pass this opportunity up.” The corner-lot location, distant neighbors, and proximate lake activities are just a few aspects of what drew

Tommy to the property, even with its dated exterior colors and interior décor. Both Tommy and his wife, MeLinda, knew everything needed an overhaul. What wasn’t obvious (until later) was just how much structural help the home needed. “It had to be stripped to the studs,” he begins. “We thought

when we bought the bungalow that it would only need new plumbing and wiring and that it would be a fairly quick process.” Hindsight makes him chuckle at the assumption. After a structural engineer helped open the floor plan and bring all of the framework up to speed, the team replaced the siding, added a dormer, and re-roofed. With a new master bedroom upstairs, the home’s verti-

cal space expanded by around 400 square feet. The addition also allowed the team to add things that South Carolina homeowners love, like a new porch connected to the master bedroom and more deck area on the first floor, all while maintaining the ’50s charm. Every facet of the Bonneau home was updated. AdvanTech subflooring was lain beneath the hardwood

floors to prevent even the tiniest bit of moisture, either from the lake or from the coastal climate, from warping the wood. Spray foam insulation was installed for better energy conservation. A tankless water heater and Uponor Pex plumbing replaced the old pipes. Now the pipes will never freeze, and the homeowners never have to worry about dripping faucets. The interior was designed and decorated by MeLinda, who picked CH+D • Summer 2015

everything from the colors and the finishes to the tile and the hardware. Most dramatic of all the revisions is the deck that hides the septic tank. Since septic tanks need maintenance on occasion, the team built a deck that opens along a track system so that one half slides to the right and the other half slides to the left, allowing access to the tank. “It’s going to be tough to live up to

the standards we set with our first whole-home restoration; MeLinda and I weren’t the only ones who wanted to live in it once we were done. into a space suited for entertaining in an array of weather conditions. After meeting with Craig Turner of Express Sunrooms, Robert, Judy, and Craig were able to develop a plan to breathe new life into their drab patio. They first chose an adjustable pergola, a key element in weatherproofing. Craig describes the awning saying, “The louvers open with a remote control to any angle. You can run away from the sun as it moves or close them completely.”

The Hetzes can shield their guests from rain—the pergola is watertight—and the heat of the sun. On cooler days, the pergola can be opened to allow the rays to warm the patio. Judy and Robert also incorporated freestanding heaters and overhead fans to further combat unpleasant weather. To feed their hungry guests, the homeowners requested an outdoor kitchen complete with a stainless-steel grill, pizza oven, trash receptacle, refrigerator, and icemaker. And if watching locals on the golf course isn’t

Appealing Appliances When it became time to start appliance shopping and determining the most favorable bang-to-buck ratio, one Lowcountry couple learned that Plugs Appliance Center has been cooking with gas for a long time.

o longer is designing a kitchen just a matter of combining a few appliances and countertops to have a space for weeknight dinners; now, even the average kitchen is focused on the perfect combination of functionality and grace. Many homeowners are reluctant (or even refuse) to buy a home without a kitchen with an A+ rating in space and performance potential. Of all the variables that make up a functional kitchen, though, appliances are at the top of the list. Choosing just the right cooktop or oven for a space is often overwhelming, as a certain Lowcountry couple nearing the last stages of the homebuilding process learned quickly. That’s when they sought help from Plugs Appliance Center. Whitten Meares, Gene Wallace, and the rest of the team at Plugs embraced the frustrated couple and brought them back to square one. “Our first step is to ask our customers about how they use their kitchen on a regular basis and determine their budget,” says Gene. “Everyone has a budget, whether they know it when they come through the door or not.”

The homeowners chose a glass hood to better showcase their new Thermador range. The quartzite countertops from East Coast Granite and Design complement the modern style.

108

CH+D • Summer 2015

Since eighty percent of time in the kitchen is spent over the cooktop, Gene often advises homeowners to invest a little more in the range. He notes, “Ranges are where you get the most value per dollar. The clients at this home chose a particular Thermador range that has ultra-low simmer settings, which are hard to find on most other cooktops.” He adds, “It’s one of Thermador’s best-

selling models for that reason.” From there, the team at Plugs was able to help the no-longer-frazzled couple select their Thermador double oven with convection cooking, a Thermador dishwasher, and a GE Microwave, all in a beautiful stainless-steel finish that complements the “Shadow Storm” quartz-

ite and slate-colored paint on the cabinets. The best part of choosing the appliances, though, was the deal that Thermador offers periodically, which allows customers who buy a range and an oven to receive a dishwasher for free. “Plugs Appliance has been in business in the Lowcountry for nearly 40 years, first as a distributor and now as a retail company. In that time, our passion has become helping each person create just the right kitchen,” Gene explains. Sometimes clients even come to them with sketches and blueprints of kitchens, wondering where to place their ovens or refrigerators; the team at Plugs Appliance sets itself apart by walking each customer through from beginning to end. ❖

(facing page) This original JD Smith custom home was constructed on one of Daniel Island’s golf-course-front lots. (above) The homeowners' second home on Daniel Island features ample outdoor space to entertain their ten grandchildren.

Early Islanders Homeowners Anne and Bill Stevens have been residing on Daniel Island for over twelve years; their second house in the area proves to be their best investment yet.

I

n 1997, Daniel Island was little more than a rugged plot of paradise situated at the confluence of the Wando and Cooper Rivers. Early in the island’s development—in 2003—Bill and Anne Stevens saw the potential of the community, and they decided to construct a home for themselves. Watching the growth of the town (which now consists of approximately 2,000 single-family homes) and welcoming new neighbors made them love the locale even more. Anne explains, “When we first looked at Daniel Island, there were already sidewalks. We didn’t see these on Isle of Palms or some of the other areas. Sidewalks

mean that there are permanent residents and a sense of community. We wanted that, so I said, ‘This is it.’” Years later, the couple decided to downsize. The Stevenses considered living in no other part of town; Daniel Island was (and is) their home. As they searched for a builder, Bill and Anne came across Donnie Smith of JD Smith Custom Homes, and their personalities immediately clicked. They had located a lot and were prepared to move forward with construction, but they couldn’t sell their first home. The Stevenses, sadly, had to halt construction and back out of their original

plan. Bill recalls, “As luck would have it, several months later someone came in and bought our house, and we were suddenly in a rush to find a new place.” Bill and Anne came back to Donnie and were able to build on the same lot they had originally chosen. Donnie was constructing a spec house on the property, but the contractors had only reached the framing stage. Donnie set out to adapt the plans, designed by Architrave, and create the Stevenses’ second Daniel Island residence. “We actually flunked a little bit of the downsizing part,” says Anne with a laugh. “We now have ten grand chilCH+D • Summer 2015

Anne requested extra closets wherever she could make room, as well as accessible attic storage (with fullsized doors and carpeted floors) connected to each second-floor walk-in. In each and every room, one key factor played a major role in the design—storage. “We customized the house exactly

The builder-homeowner connection couldn’t have been any better. The three even have a running joke—Donnie and Bill had a knack for showing up at meetings wearing matching shirts. What did they do on closing day? They both donned their greenplaid button-downs for the occasion. In more seriousness, though, Donnie worked with the Stevenses each week to make sure that the project was progressing on schedule by putting Anne in touch with the right subcontractors to hash out the details of the flooring or trim work and by tak-

ing her ideas (sometimes sketched on a napkin) and bringing them to fruition. The finished home is exactly what the Stevenses were seeking. Bill and Anne are looking forward to spending the next decades in the community that they’ve grown to adore. ❖ For more information, call JD Smith Custom Homes at (843) 881-8843 or visit jdsmithcustomhomesllc.com.

The Art of the Matter South Carolinian Miller Gaffney shares her secrets about the ever-competitive, everevolving world of art and antique investing. Story by Megan J. Busch | Photography by Josh Norris

W

hile pursuing a career in political journalism, Miller Gaffney switched gears, realizing a deeper passion for

Perhaps, however, you may be more familiar with seeing her face on PBS; Miller appeared on Antiques Roadshow and more recently, rummaged through flea markets on Market Warriors. I checked in with Miller to get the scoop about art and antique investments, her childhood in our home state, and her new television show, Art Breakers, on Ovation network.

The Art of the Matter Miller, I think that an art consultant may be a profession that many aren’t completely familiar with. What do you actually do on a daily basis? You’re right. Most people don’t understand what an art consultant is. It isn’t something that I normally have to explain in Los Angeles or New York, but in South Carolina, a lot of people think that a decorator or an interior designer can choose art for them. It’s completely different, though. When you’re dealing with art, it’s an asset and a large investment. I have a company, Miller Gaffney Art Advisory, which is an appraisal and art-consulting firm. It really has two sides. For the appraisals, my work varies—I handle insurance appraisals, damage-and-loss appraisals, trust-andestate appraisals, appraisal updates, and whole-home inventories (this is often for future trust-and-estate planning or for insurance purposes). That’s the appraisal side of the business. For the consulting side, I am either selling or purchasing high-quality art for clients and helping them build collections. I work with corporate clients who want art for their offices and residential clients who just want something great for a specific room or who want to begin a collection. I bring an unbiased eye to the process. I’m working exclusively on the buyer’s agenda and his or her goals. How did you become interested in this type of work? When I was younger, I remember my mother having the furniture in our house appraised. I watched the man do the whole thing. I took great interest in it, and I was only in middle school. Also, my mother was always dragging me to art-museum exhibits, and I didn’t think it was a fun or

cool thing to do at the time. Now, I’m very grateful for those experiences. They trained my eye at a very early age. But, the excitement hadn’t hit me yet. I would say that moment didn’t happen until later in college when I was traveling. That’s when art came alive to me, so I changed career paths. I had wanted to be a political reporter for the White House. I was working there at the time, and I thought, I don’t really enjoy this. There was a lot of fighting,

I went to Sotheby’s to get my master’s degree; it is one of only two schools that teaches the business of the profession (the other is Christie’s). I like working with people on the buying and selling side of things. The Sotheby’s program teaches American art chronologically in all different genres. It helped me learn everything from crystal and furniture to silver since the 1700s. How did your degree lead into a successful career? As another step in the process, I became a certified appraiser through New York University in 2005. When I was living in New York, someone stole my jewelry, including my grandmother’s diamond ring. I was very upset about it because I did not have a proper insurance appraisal. It was not done by a certified appraiser. This incident gave me the goal to protect people from future accidents like mine. That’s how my career and business really began. Did you ever think, growing up, that you would be living in New York—it’s a far cry from Greenville’s slower pace?

and there always will be in politics. It’s funny because in the art world, there’s fighting and conniving, too. At the end of the day, though, there’s always an exciting piece that people are fighting over. What I wanted was to be surrounded by beautiful things; it was my ultimate goal. That’s why I made the switch. Completely changing career paths is no easy task. What did that switch entail?

I always thought I would move because I’ve always set high goals. It’s amazing how you grow. I looked at Greenville as a big city when I was young; that sounds funny now. My views changed as I got out in the world and started working and having experiences. I remember living in Washington, DC, and I thought that was the biggest city in the world. Then, I went back after working a summer in New York City and thought, Uh, it’s so teeny. South Carolina—Greenville—is home, so I look at it with rose-colored glasses. I find that it always draws me back. It’s where my roots are.

(above) According to Miller, “Art should add a sense of originality to a living space and resonate with the collector. Art adds depth and richness to our lives.” This Seattle Slew sculpture by Rene Williams is located at a plantation in Camden, South Carolina, the home of the Carolina Cup and the horse-racing capitol of the state. The Art of the Matter

(above) This traditional-style office features an etchings collection by James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Mortimer Menpes. The large oil on canvas (Unknown, Dutch Harbor Landscape) provides a focal point in the center of the room above the fireplace and balances the extensive collection. Miller notes, “I find it fascinating and challenging to discover what sparks an individual’s interest and propels him or her down a path toward a certain collection.” The pieces, curated by Miller, create a masculine feel in the office.

You have a home in the Upstate still, right? Yes. My parents’ home is still there. It’s a traditional Georgian redbrick house. My grandfather built it, and then my parents moved in when I was born. I never moved again in my childhood, but now, I move frequently and travel often. I just returned to Greenville in the fall from living in New York. I’m sure that you’re enjoying decorating your Carolina home with your favorite pieces. What are some of your most beloved items in your personal collection? It’s funny; it’s not necessarily the most expensive or unique piece. I have more senti-

mental attachment to a bracelet and a special silver tulip vase that my grandmother gave me than anything else. In my office, I have Christian Dior fashion sketches by Marc Bohan that I love; I bought those in Paris at an auction house called Drouot. I thought it was such a thrilling experience to do the bidding in French. There’s a different sort of invigorating competitive excitement in the auction house. I also treasure some Lucite and Art Deco pieces of furniture that I have.

ily like French furniture. I still like it, but I’ve migrated to simpler lines. I like the cleaner aspect of Art Deco and prefer more contemporary art. I have a French Louis XV settee that I bought from Todd Romano, one of New York’s well-known interior designers; I lived in his former apartment in the city. I’ve moved away from that French Rococo style, though.

Why these pieces? Do you think that your admiration of them will change over time?

I think that the evolution of styles and changing trends often intimidate buyers who are looking to purchase art or furniture. How do you ensure that what your clients are buying is valuable and will stand the test of time?

My collection and style has changed already, and I’m sure it will continue to shift. In the beginning, I used to primar-

First and foremost, I tell everybody, “Buy what you love.” That’s most important because they’re

(left top) The collection at this Columbia office showcases original etchings depicting Southern scenes. This work is by artist Larry Francis Lebby of Dixiana, SC. Miller describes, “He makes magic with the common pen.” (left bottom) This collection focuses on Southern women artists. The oil-on-canvas painting is Sandra in the Garden by Helen Turner.

going to be the ones living with it, whether it goes up in value or not. That’s the first factor. For art—for a contemporary and living artist— there are different factors and market analytics that I look for: Does the artist display in any galleries or museums? Has he received any awards, like the Guggenheim Fellowship? Is he represented in any corporate collections? Is his work in any notable private collections? Does the artist have a presence on the auction market? The answers to these questions give a good indication about the future value of the work. For other items, I look for certain criteria of quality—good, better, best. You can always use that test at any type of auction or even flea market, whether you’re looking at a coin, a stamp, or a dining table. If you see enough of something, then you can see the differences in quality. How would an average shopper know what’s good, better, or best? It’s really just training your eye. My new book, which will be released this fall, is about collecting art and antiques. It’s a guide where I take readers through the entire collecting process, whether they’re a connoisseur or a beginning collector. It gives readers the vocabulary to talk about the pieces—to speak the right language. In the other chapters, I write about everything from American furniture and Continental furniture to sculpture and art. I give specifics about what to look for, what to buy, and how to inspect something from each genre for value. Always look for pieces of quality and magic—a piece that you would never tire of looking at. Did your work with PBS help you develop your keen eye for these types of details? Definitely. Once I got my appraisal license, I was approved to be on Antiques Roadshow. I talked to them for four-and-a-half years before I got the opportunity to be on the show. Someone was sick, and the producer said, “Can you just come up here for the weekend?” That’s how it began. With Antiques Roadshow, I never knew what I was going to see. We saw 5,000 to 6,000 people a day, all with different items for appraisal. When the producers were developing Market Warriors, they asked me if I wanted to go back to AnCH+D • Summer 2015

The Art of the Matter tiques Roadshow for another season or go to Market Warriors. I thought Market Warriors would be a great new adventure. It was something totally out of my element, and I loved it. I did not grow up going to flea markets. The experience developed in me new techniques and a new way of browsing. I wasn’t seeing something in a gallery with the correct lighting or talking to experts or even dealing with the same terminology. Market Warriors went off the air in 2013, but now Ovation network is working with you on your new show, Art Breakers. What can you tell me about it? Ovation produces great shows; there’s always an educational feature to

everything they do. My show, Art Breakers, is going to demonstrate what I do in the art world on a daily basis— more of the appraisals and the art consulting. Viewers will get to see some exclusive private collections that I’ve helped to develop. It’s totally opposite from Market Warriors. When you assist with curating a private collection, what is that process like? Sometimes the client and I shop together, and sometimes I choose and purchase items for someone on my own. It depends on the person. I have one client in New York who says, “I want the educational part of this. I want the hands on. I want you to take

me to the studios. I want to go to the lectures.” That’s rare. Most people don’t have time for that. If the collectors are not as involved, I always start with a worksheet that I developed. After spending some time with them, I can see where they’re leaning and what they like and don’t like. My worksheet really helps narrow down their preferences because ultimately, when we make that decision and spend that much money, we need to make sure that it meets all of the collectors’ goals. You’ve worked with several collectors in Charleston and have kept in touch with the art scene here even through your travels. What is popular in the Holy City?

(above left) Set in a period gold frame, Maria Davenport’s 1858 folk-art painting Mother and Children on the Riverbank punctuates this entryway. (above right) David Russell of Russell Glassworks in Camden, SC is an established glass artist that Miller recommended for this collection. Miller describes art as singular and irreplaceable. Each of these hand-blown pieces are one of a kind and impossible to duplicate.

They like to focus on the historical etchings of architectural themes. It makes sense because it’s such a beautiful, historic, memorable city. Are there any local artists who you would tout as on-the-rise? Jonathan Green is fascinating; I’m inspired by his work. I think that West Fraser is extremely talented. He does these very luminous coastal landscape paintings that are just beautiful and picturesque of the Lowcountry. Mary Edna

(above left) The collection at this Charleston home pays homage to the city’s rich heritage. The owner loves pieces depicting scenes of Charleston, particularly those by artist Alfred Herber Hutty. Fraser: Her work is quite interesting because she gets up in an airplane and looks at the marsh country. It’s such a difficult medium that she works with—batiks. I’m crazy about her work. Do you have specific advice for Charlestonians seeking to start collecting art or furniture? It’s easy to get bogged down in Charleston because there are so many galleries—especially on Broad Street. You can kind of lose track of the process and end goal. Auction houses are a great place to learn the market, and I would encourage people to go to Charlton Hall [in Columbia], Pook & Pook [in Camden], or Brunk Auctions [in Asheville]. There are wonderful auction houses right here in the Southeast. If you keep track of the auction, you can learn the regional market. You’ll think, Wow, why are people going

crazy about this item? or What is it about that cupboard that makes it so unique that people want to buy it? Attend art exhibitions, and look to see what sells. Go to museums, and see why they are supporting certain exhibits. Go to Spoleto. It encourages art; it keeps it alive. And never be afraid to ask for advice. By having a focus to your collection, you can make a valuable legacy for others, if you want, or you can just enjoy your pieces and buy what makes you happy. Either way, make the best of it, and learn to use your money effectively. That is how great collections are built.

Christopher Rose, AIA of Christopher Rose Architects (843) 559-7670 | chrisrosearchitects.com What is the most artistic aspect of this home? The huge wrap-around porches are one of a kind in terms of size and design with curves that complement the overall shape of the home and incorporate the surrounding foliage.

What is your favorite feature? This home’s interior and exterior divisions are blurred with numerous large windows and closely planted trees—it makes the outside feel like it has come inside.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? I was the original architect on the home, and for the pool, deck, and outdoor kitchen area, I was able to determine lot coverage, restrictions, and placement. This also enabled us to install a totally integrated pool with a low wall that is at bench height (ideal for entertaining), and the wall serves as a good barrier against the curious alligators that live in the pond adjacent to the property.

Tim Hilkhuijsen, AIA, ARA of Architecture Plus (843) 568-6781 | architectureplusllc.com What is the most artistic aspect of this home? The screened porch and outdoor living spaces are obvious choices for the views and entertaining potential, but I also think the butler pantry and dining room are elegant as well. Each is a separate, purposeful space that has its own mood, yet each room creates an inviting, cohesive environment.

What is your favorite feature? As the basic method of designing a home, angles (such as site placement, walls within the floor plan, and window locations) are one of the most important visual aspects of a successful project. The way this home’s spaces came together to create view corridors and an open floor plan is its best feature.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? The views, number of trees, and the shape of the home required a professional’s eye for detail. Not only did we have to be on top of all the construction costs and limitations, but we had to use a lot of creativity to capture all the beautiful views around the lot.

Beau Clowney, AIA of Beau Clowney Architects (843) 722-2040 | beauclowney.com What is the most artistic aspect of this home? The owners decided on a white-and-neutral interior in order to highlight their colorful modern art collection; this is one of the most striking features of the home. The shiplap walls and ceilings also help in creating a relaxed cottage-like environment.

What is your favorite feature? The initial concept for this design is that of two individual cottages joined by a link. These structures form a beautiful courtyard along the side of the property which provides a lush backdrop for the entertaining areas located on the ground floor.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? The house is located in a floodplain, therefore it is elevated. The ground floor under the home is used for storage and entertaining. Additionally, the long and narrow nature of the site was a true design challenge considering the homeowners’ strong desire to provide ocean views from as many rooms as possible.

David Hill, AIA of The Verdi Company (843) 744-6550 | theverdicompany.com What is the most artistic aspect of this home? The relationship between the home and the river is almost seamless. We took full advantage of the views with a second-story deck and a roof deck, both of which incorporate the home’s surrounding nature into each aspect.

What is your favorite feature? Definitely that roof deck—the views are absolutely stunning, offering panoramic vantage points of the river and the marsh.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? Our design-build process makes the undertaking of building a home much smoother. When we design a home, it’s specifically for that client and his or her budget, which helps avoid surprises.

Buz Morris, AIA of Morris Architecture & Construction (843) 577-8010 | morrisaandc.com What is the most artistic aspect of this home? The addition of the great room meshes with the rest of the home so well. It has large windows that bring in natural light, and all the trim and furniture harmonizes with the exposed-brick walls inside and the blue stone of the terrace beyond the doors.

What is your favorite feature? It is hard to choose. The ten-foot ceilings of the great room really complement the fireplace and the terrace.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? Making a home’s floor plan flow with functionality and grace is hard enough, so adding to an already existing home is even more complex. We worked with the homeowners to create the perfect space while also maintaining the continuity of the home.

Steve Herlong, AIA of Herlong & Associates (843) 883-9190 | herlongarchitects.com What is the most artistic aspect of this home? It is the way the interior and exterior architecture converge with the livability of the home and the spectacular views of the property. It was critical to situate the home in such a way as to capture every possible view of the water and nature, as well as the natural light.

What is your favorite feature? The expansive living room, featuring a beautiful curved wall, opens up to a generous outdoor living space, complete with an infinity-edge pool and spa. The double doors off the master bedroom open to a veranda with a stunning view of the ocean.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? As architects, it is our goal to fulfill our clients’ every need by working with them to create their dream home. We must always keep in mind important design dilemmas, such as community guidelines and lot restrictions. We work extra carefully to ensure the best solutions to these guidelines, while also optimizing the flow of public spaces and utilizing energy-efficient methods along the way.

Trevor Draper, AIA of TMD Architects (843) 754-1400 | tmdarchitects.com What is the most artistic aspect of this home? The bulk of this project was renovating an existing home, so many of the spaces were largely in place already. By introducing new finishes, such as shiplap and quartz countertops, this home transformed from an ordinary house at the beach to an extraordinary beach home.

What is your favorite feature? The sunroom is my favorite space in the house. The room was the result of enclosing an existing screened porch, creating a very cozy and intimate environment. The new windows and the light colors make the room a very bright and happy space to experience.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? Using an architect on this project was critical to the overall cohesion of the home. The renovation work was spread throughout the house and could have easily felt disjointed. There was also extensive wood rot, which led to the replacement of the windows, siding, roofing, trim, and, most importantly, flashing. Throughout these changes in the project scope, we were able to maintain the design intent even as the project evolved and grew.

Blake Middleton, FAIA, LEED of The Middleton Group (843) 302-0632 | themiddletongroup.net What is the most artistic aspect of this home? The front faรงade of the home was carefully designed to fit the aesthetic of Kiawah Island and to accommodate different lot features, like a grand oak tree.

What is your favorite feature? The openness of the kitchen and the living area are very welcoming. Both open out onto the huge back porch, which is recessed into the house, creating a vast outdoor living space.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? The building site presented challenges with its huge oak tree and the size of the house the homeowners wanted to build. We were able to design the house to fit the site and work around the tree, which became a major feature of the lot.

CHOOSING NATURAL STONE

Popular Stone Choices

The Terminology

Delving into a kitchen or bathroom project undoubtedly requires choices to be made about countertop materials. Check out our quick guide to all things natural stone before you begin your search for the perfect slab.

Marble: Marble is softer than granite and is a form of metamorphosed limestone. It’s most commonly installed in bathrooms.

Granite: Granite is a natural stone consisting of quartz, mica, and feldspar. It’s the top choice for kitchen counters because of its durability and heat resistance.

Quartzite: When sandstone encounters extreme heat, quartzite forms. The result is an incredibly hard surface that is both beautiful and sturdy.

Travertine: Travertine is a solid choice for outdoor applications—both for pool surrounds and countertops— because of its unparalleled and enduring strength in all weather.

Slab: A slab is a full piece of natural stone removed from a quarry. Most measure an average of nine feet wide and six feet tall.

The Fundamentals of

ROOF PROTECTION When building a coastal home, consider a hip roof. It experiences 40 percent less wind pressure than more commonly built gable roofs. Metal roofing is a stronger, more weather-resistant option, especially in high winds and hail. Spray foam installed in the attic and pitch of the roof exponentially increases the strength of your home's envelope. The spray foam, which hardens upon drying, works like glue to hold your roof and walls together.

HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE No home should ever be underinsured, least of all homes that experience regular exposure to coastal environments and heavy storms. All areas of Charleston are either in a flood zone or near one, so flood insurance is a must.

Every coastal home can benefit from impactresistant windows and doors and exterior protective shutters. Choose from several window protection options, such as boardand-batten or metal roll-down shutters. Those featured on this hurricane-safe house are windresistant Bahama shutters. As the largest opening of a home, garage doors need extra reinforcing. A garage-door failure can break the seal of a home's envelope, allowing pressure to enter the structure and potentially causing the roof to detach. Steel bars (struts) can be added to existing doors to increase hurricane protection.

BACK-UP POWER

FOUNDATION PROTECTION Installing flood vents prevents water pressure buildup that destroys foundations and walls during a flood. Often, they come with insurance premium deductions as well.

Permanent backup standby generators provide a secondary source of electricity when inclement weather destroys power lines. They are exceptionally vital if power is needed for medical reasons. Standby generators sense a loss of power and turn on automatically.

An Afternoon Spent on the North Side By: Megan J. Busch I’m a little biased when it comes to North Charleston, probably because I live there. I love the rapid growth of the area, the off-the-beaten-path restaurants, and the deals to be had at local shopping spots. So, I decided to take my coworkers to my side of town. We started at my house in Park Circle and walked over to The Junction Kitchen & Provisions, one of the newest eateries to pop up in my neighborhood. Don’t let its Spruill Avenue address fool you; the owners have given new life to breakfast-and-lunch diner fare in a quaint and slightly retro-styled restaurant. We grabbed a booth and ordered some of the chef’s specialties—Cactus Pork Mexican Tacos, a breakfast sandwich with candied bacon on a homemade biscuit, a spinach salad, and a side of sweet-potato chips. The strangest thing on the menu (and the one item we couldn’t resist tasting)? The Buzzed Doughnut. The original creation features coffee-rubbed bacon and an over-easy egg served on a biscuit doughnut with a mocha dip. Despite the mash-up of ingredients, it was a phenomenal combination of flavors.

With full bellies, we drove to Leeds Avenue to do some home shopping. One of Broad Street’s designer boutiques—Ro Sham Beaux—boasts a second, lesser-known location where deals abound. In North Charleston, the company has recently opened a warehouse with Ro Sham Beaux’s stellar home accessories. The pieces, which have either been on display in a showroom or are no longer in production, sell from the warehouse at seventy percent off of the retail price. We spotted lamps, light fixtures, mirrors, fine furniture, and even a few bracelets that we loved. After visiting these hidden gems, I know I’ll be on the lookout for more upand-coming spots in North Charleston to explore. For more information about The Junction Kitchen & Provisions, call (843) 745-9189 or visit thejunctionkitchen.com. To learn about the Ro Sham Beaux warehouse (open only on Thursdays and Fridays), call (843) 789-3478 or visit ro-sham-beaux.com.
