Bright New Faces Teryn Meyer (left) & Melissa Muhl (right) are two of the newest team members to join Charleston Lighting and Interiors. These two ladies sat down and shared some of their stories and ideas on the latest and greatest trends in the world of home lighting.
What brings you to Charleston or have you always been a Lowcountry resident? Teryn: I moved here from Columbia to try out the Art Institute’s interior design program and live in a beautiful new city with my sister. Melissa: I’ve lived in Charleston for 20 years and can’t imagine living anywhere else! Tell us a little bit about your role with Charleston Lighting and Interiors? Teryn: I am working as an inside sales person, which involves assisting customers with purchases, design consulting, and visual merchandising. I also serve as our social media coordinator, meaning I create custom content for our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Melissa: I do contract sales so each day I assist designers, architects, builders, and general contractors with lighting selections that suit their desired aesthetic and budget. I love the variety of these dedicated professionals.
What do you consider a quintessential piece of Lowcountry home design and why? Teryn: One of the best things about living in an historically significant place is that while many people are concerned with preserving the traditional Charleston feeling of their home’s exterior, they're still open to experimenting with their interior design. Melissa: For me, I would say the way that indoor and outdoor spaces meld into one another is a staple. Features like big porches, tall windows, and French doors all allow our beautiful weather to be enjoyed. What are some lighting trends you are seeing in the industry?
Teryn: The trends I see fall into two categories: popular looks on social media vs. trends in our customer's design choices. Those on social media are sharp, clean, artsy, and largely contemporary. Conversely, the palettes of local homes are typically more muted and the lighting designs lean more towards transitional than contemporary. Melissa: There are several. The focus on natural materials, craftsmanship, and energy efficiency are my favorite current trends.

Melissa Said: I’m not a white sofa fan. I like to walk in and see a pattern. I can see it for other people and I can decorate with it, but for me, when people do spill or drop things, a floral or pattern might help cover what I can’t get out right away.
White Sofas: Do or Don’t?
Liz Said: Definitely a do! I have a white sofa myself. I think it’s fun to have a pop of color with the pillows; it is neat to change the colors up a lot. It’s nice because you can clean and bleach white sofas.
Melissa Said: I’m definitely more traditional. I come from New England, which has a very traditional architectural look. I do love the high ceilings here, so I’ve transitioned myself a little bit, but I’m still more traditional.
Traditional or Modern Décor?
Liz Said: I come from a traditional background as well, but I like a transitional element or surprise in a design. I like the transitional style mixed with traditional for an eclectic look.
Melissa Said: I think going four layers deep with pillows is a good plan. Personally, I have nine total pillows on mine.
How Many Pillows Does a Bed Need?
Liz Said: I’m also four layers deep with pillows. I have three Euros, four that you sleep with, two standards, and one little one in front for a total of 12.

Taking a Look at the Cost of Recycled Glass Countertops As a commodity that is found in almost every household, countertops come in many shapes, sizes, colors, and materials.
Durability and Minimal Maintenance
When it comes to comparing countertop materials and determining which is right for your lifestyle, the major considerations of durability and maintenance are on the top of many homeowners’ lists. Natural materials like granite and marble are strong, yet typically require regular and costly maintenance. That’s where recycled glass countertops can outperform other natural choices. Because of their resin or concrete-based composure, which creates a non-pourous surface, recycled glass countertops do not require resealing—a task that can grow expensive over time. For the same reason, these countertops can withstand heat exposure up to 300 degrees and are highly resistant to scratching and chipping.
Supreme Sustainability
Just as the name suggests, recycled glass countertops are made of a mixture of recycled glass and a concrete or resin base. Approximately 90% of the glass we use is collected from Charleston restaurants and manufacturing plants. This sourcing

eliminates negative environmental impacts that natural stone mining can cause, not to mention the significant amount of glass that is removed from landfills as the main material in these surfaces. A low VOC epoxy binds the glass to the concrete or resin, making the manufacturing process eco-friendly as well. Plus, there are little to no excess materials from job to job, meaning homeowners don’t have to buy a huge slab from which to cut much smaller countertops.
Uniquely Customizable
As the cherry on top of these monetary and environmental benefits, recycled glass countertops are completely tailored to preference. A homeowner can choose the color and glass size in nearly any combination to fit their personal style. Other accent materials like shells, sharks’ teeth, and reflective ingredients can be included in the mix to create a singular and distinctive surface for an indoor or outdoor space.

Bill & Maribeth Reid of Closet Factory During the remodel of their home, Bill and his wife, Maribeth, utilized their professional knowledge of the closet industry to turn several fundamental storage spaces into highly functional and glamorous aspects of their home.
The Reid’s master bedroom closet is a work of organizational art. With lighted closet rods and strip lighting around the shoe storage, there are no shadowed areas where shoes and accessories can get lost. The closet shelving is also a strong and long-lasting melamine in “Chocolate Pear,” which coordinates with the rich wood theme in the rest of the home.

Bill and his wife often have guests and family who visit, so they selected textured wood grain melamine with oil rubbed bronze handles for the cabinetry in the home office. This melamine also disguises a queen murphy bed and lots of drawer storage for guests. In addition, there are plenty of filing cabinets for Bill to organize his important business papers and for Maribeth, a Doctor of Nursing Practice, to keep her medical reference notebooks accessible but hidden.

Out of sight are the laundry hampers and pull out ironing board, hidden behind decorative door fronts and matching wood backing. Bill and Maribeth especially enjoy the coffee bar area that is tucked away in the master closet that provides them the luxury to quickly get ready while conveniently sipping a cup of coffee as they prepare for their day. CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON The Craftsmen:
A Skilled Team of Woodworking Professionals from Southern Lumber & Millwork Corp.
The Craft:
Using a variety of modern and traditional methods, the team of woodworkers at Southern Lumber & Millwork Corp. creates custom millwork and mouldings.
The Backstory:
Southern Lumber & Millwork Corp. was founded 77 years ago in Charleston by Herman Albrecht, Jr. in his downtown Charleston backyard. Herman took on Raymond Rike as a partner early in the company’s history, and together they steadily grew the business. The duo, and their growing team, moved the company to a seven-acre lot on King Street, where they still operate to this day. After Herman bought out his partner in 1961 and since then, members of Herman’s family have continued to manage the operations. It isn’t just family members of Herman that have stayed with the company, though; several families throughout the business are seeing a second generation work here.
The Process:
This multifaceted business boasts a variety of options for customers, both residential and commercial, to choose from for custom millwork and mouldings. The Southern Lumber team can craft a particular item based on a sample that is brought in or even an inspiration photo that a client has sourced. A skilled laborer in that particular field will work a piece throughout the project using a combination of highly traditional woodworking methods as well as contemporary machinery, depending on what the project calls for at that time. Whether the piece is created with elbow grease or the help of a CNC router, precise measurements and attention to historical accuracy go into each item that is carefully crafted in the large workshop. The carpenters and millwrights can create anything from wooden railings, to window sashes, to mouldings, and much more.

Dining Design When shopping for new dining room furniture, knowing the proper terms for what you’re looking for can help make the process easier. Telling the sales associate, “I like the wooden, traditional ones with the skinny stick backs,” isn’t as descriptive as asking for a Craftsman-style chair with a lath back. Learn a few basic terms to help make purchasing new dining chairs a little easier. Popular Dining room Chair Genres

We suggest that customers stay consistent on the front of the house. Usually we’ll use the same look on the front, like in a dining room, living room, and family room, and we will try to do the same in the rooms above them. For example, if they do a plantation shutter, we will want to do a plantation shutter on the entire front. On the back of the house, you can have different looks and use various things. Also, if you have a western exposure, you will want something energy efficient. The Hunter Douglas Duette is a good product for that. Duette blackout shades or roller shades with a side panel can give you the room darkening that a homeowner might need.
We use all commercial grade and quality paint. We have really strong partners and this is partially because we have national relationships with the PPGs, SherwinWilliams, and Benjamin Moores of the world. What are the distinctive features of this home that illustrate your custom work? The distinctive features of this Isle of Palms residence are the ceramic tile floors that simulate hardwood floors, which were chosen for their durability, and the reclaimed barn wood accents from upstate New York that are used throughout to give it an inviting cozy appeal. Another feature that sets this home apart is the spiral staircase to the 3rd floor/rooftop deck to take advantage of the gorgeous island views.
What are your favorite elements of this home? One of my favorite elements of this home is the open floor plan that presents the flow of the chef’s kitchen, the welcoming living room, and the inviting dining room. That, coupled with the tranquility of the outdoor pool and patio, allows the homeowners to entertain and enjoy the company of their family and friends at this beach retreat on the Isle of Palms.
What advice do you have for homeowners seeking to build a custom home? In addition to checking the references of your builder’s previous clients and industry subcontractors, the best advice that I can give to homeowners seeking to build a custom home is to make sure your builder sets realistic budgets for your project. The least expensive bid isn’t always the best value for your money. Your estimate and ultimately your contract with the builder should be based on your specific selections in order to give you the closest budget so that there will not be any unnecessary overages at the end of construction. Company: Hudson Designs, Inc. Credentials: Charles has been in Charleston since the winter of 1979. He matriculated at Bonds-Wilson High School and graduated from Trident Technical College 1984. Later, he received a degree from Southern Illinois University. Charles has been drafting and practicing since 1985. Not long after earning his license, he became a partner at Seamar Fullerton Hudson Designs. He has since become president of that firm.
Why was it important for the homeowners to hire an architect for this project? It’s a requirement on the surrounding barrier islands that homeowners, but more importantly those who live in the flood zone prone areas around the state, hire a licensed architect/engineer. These professionals should handle the design and/or engineering of a project and the building process.
What unique challenges did this project have and how were you able to overcome them? The oddly-shaped lot and a grand tree greatly affected the design. It was sad to see that the tree was found to be diseased; our design team was also informed that if we tried to treat it, the stress of building around it could cause the tree to die anyway. So, with the input from the homeowners, we chose to mitigate the situation and add several young oaks to the property.
What is your favorite feature of this project I love the dual porches. They provide the best views of the surrounding area from the house.
What were some of the homeowners’ requests for their house? Besides wanting the dual-screened porches, this couple definitely made this a team project; they truly enjoy each other so they wanted open spaces to be together. One main requirement was that they wanted to have a kitchen where they could still see each other while either one was cooking, looking at television, or just lounging. Company: Sullivan's Island Designs, LLC Credentials: Interior Designer Edie Sullivan and her daughter and business partner, Elizabeth Sullivan, own and operate Sullivan’s Island Design. Edie has a degree in Interior Design and over 40 years of experience in the industry. Elizabeth utilizes her Associate Degree in Multimedia & Specialized Technology as the Office Manager and Media Specialist for their company.
What are some of the key design elements of this space? This historic 19th century Italianate Victorian home has the original, beautifully intricate stenciled ceilings that needed to be repaired. We hired a faux finish artist to restore the damaged areas. The color palette for the living room and dining room were drawn from the ceiling colors.
Why did this home require a professional interior designers touch? The owners had no furnishings and lacked direction. It required space planning, hiring contractors, paint selections, area rugs, lighting, window treatments, furniture, and accessories. We achieved the historic "Charleston look," yet made it feel that it was still their home.
What are some of your favorite aspects of the house? One of my favorites features is the set of French doors from the living room and dining room that open to the 40-foot piazza, which makes this a great space for entertaining, as it all flows together. The piazza furniture and accessories continue the same color palette outside but still keep the core colors of the ceilings.
What were the homeowners’ goals for this project? The owners wanted to have the traditional "Charleston look" but with their own personality mixed in—all while respecting the history of the house. We incorporated their inspirations and practical (dog friendly) materials to make these areas not just beautiful but useable. f you’ve ever heard Peyton Manning talk about the game of football, you’ll notice how, as a player, he was deeply in tune with nearly each aspect of the game from grass maintenance to opposing coach mentalities—all the way to controlling the volume of the crowd’s cheers. Listening to Roy Mahshie of Mahshie Custom Homes speak about the houses he has built is highly Manning-esque; Roy’s knowledge of every nook and cranny of a project and all of the professionals involved is reflected in his discourse.

This scrupulously crafted Charleston area home showcases this perfectly. The homeowners of this particular abode had many special, and challenging, design requests. It was up to Roy and his meticulously curated team of experts to bring all of those things to life in a prudent and safe fashion. “What we do is 100% custom. We bring a lot of ideas to the table, of course. At the end of the day though, most homeowners just show me a bunch of pictures and they ask me to
figure out how to make it happen in their home,” explains Roy Mahshie of Mahshie Custom Homes. “Fortunately, these homeowners had really great taste and style and allowed us to be really creative.” Immediately upon entering this home, it isn’t hard to realize that this isn’t a cookie-cutter home and that it took time, patience, and knowledge to put everything together. The dining room alone boasts several special elements. “This is an actual brick floor. It was an-

other one of those things that we had to know exactly where the floors were going to stop because I had to go back and redesign the flooring system underneath to make it a couple of inches lower than the ones that were going to be hardwood floors so that they all marry on the same plane,” adds
Roy. The rustic beams made of reclaimed wood and railroad spikes were also built to help bring more of the homeowners’ design dreams to life. The first floor has other features that the Mahshie team brought together and constructed. The kitchen’s cus-
tom hood and Atlantic white cedar beams took careful planning. These beams are not just for looks—these mortise and tenon timber-framed trusses are completely structural. Just beyond the kitchen leading to the back patio, special doors were sourced for this house. “This was CH+D • Winter 2018

the first door of its kind in Charleston,” adds Roy. “While we were designing this house, I had recently gone up to Wisconsin to the Andersen plant and saw this door in testing, and between Steve Black and myself we were able to get Andersen to agree to let us put it in the house early, before it was put into production, so we could plan this space around this door.”

Some of the truly unique aspects of this home are the ones that are harder to see. This home is largely controlled by the Control4 system installed by the professionals from NextGen Technologies. Lighting, music, and climate systems throughout the home can be adjusted by the homeowner’s via smartphone, mobile device, or wall-mounted control panels.

Mediterranean Masterpiece Andrea and Martin Deputy had a clear style in mind with specific wants for their forever home. Working with the right people who had the perfect resources assisted in developing their picturesque house.
S
ometimes people find design inspiration in a painting or rug. For Andrea and Martin Deputy, their home design came from their travels around the world. Italian, Moorish, and Spanish design influences can be found throughout this exquisite Lowcountry abode. A lot of planning, collaboration, and creativity went into this completely custom creation. One local source that helped
the Deputys bring this dream together was Melcer Tile. “Right before we built this house we spent seven weeks traveling in Europe from Greece to southern Spain. From this derive, we fell in love with the architecture of southern Spain with the white-washed houses with red ceramic-tiled roofs and modern interiors,” explains Andrea. “From this area we
explored Morocco and places like the Alhambra in Grenada. Alhambra had the most influence on our style.” After returning from this trip early in the planning stages of this home, the pair dug deeper into the building process and returned with Spanish tile that would help to set the stage for this house. With that first piece of tile in place, it was up to the homeowners CH+D • Winter 2018

and the professionals at Melcer Tile to help outfit the other areas. “When we went to help source tile for this home, we had to start with the loggia because of lead time for it to come in, but all of the tile had to evolve and blend from that starting point to keep with their vision,” says Jill Mahoney, Showroom Manager for Melcer Tile. “In a way, they didn’t really start anywhere because we had to keep going back and forth on all of the
choices continually,” adds Martin. “One space worked off another and, for example, the outside pebble stone in the shower had to go with the tile in the connecting inside bathroom, but the pebble had to match the pool tile which had to look good with what we had on the loggia.” Since few homes in this part of the state boast this architectural style, the team at Melcer Tile had the opportunity to stretch their design legs and help the Deputys find specific pieces and even create custom tiles. “I was so excited when they came in with their plans and discussed their vision with me,” includes Jill. Jill and the Deputys searched through numerous books, sources, and samples during this time. “Jill was very good at reading what I wanted from my mind,” laughs Andrea. “It’s hard when you know what you want and are looking for, but you need somebody to sort of show it to you.”

Conquering Challenges After facing disappointing answers from several other companies, the Thier family found the solutions to their pool and backyard living obstacles.
W
ith a little help from a search engine and mobile advertising in the form of a wrapped company truck, the Thier family was able to connect with the team at Heritage Pools, LLC. After having several companies say that the job was

simply impossible or that only an above ground pool would work, Jay and Juliet Thier were thrilled to hear Michael Gesmond, owner of Heritage Pools, LLC, declare that they were up to the challenge and could make their in-ground pool and outdoor living desires possible.
And a challenge it was—this home’s shallow, marshy lot butts up to Civil War battle mounds, meaning that the already limited and tricky-to-workwith-space was further constricted because the mounds cannot be touched at all. Throughout planning and construction, the team had to

take extensive precautions to safeguard the historical grounds that line the entire backside of the lot. Using flexible thinking and Heritage Pool’s I-Beam Brace technology, Micheal’s team found a way to create a pool that would be stable in the soft ground, be large enough to be functional, and still leave space for a patio and fire pit—all while not disturbing the view or the mounds. “With this yard so close
to the marsh it was a difficult thing to do an in-ground pool, but the Heritage Pool’s I-Beam system and the polymer walls means that the pool itself can adapt to that environment,” describes Michael. The Thiers had researched other options and were thrilled with the Heritage Pools solution. “We are on soggy ground with pilings, so we knew the ground was going to
move. We had heard that with a fiberglass pool it was going to crack or if we tried gunite or concrete it was going to crack as well and we didn’t think we had an option,” includes Juliet. “So when we heard about the I-Beam system and how it sort of moves with the ground, we knew it was going to be a good fit.” A paver patio, outdoor dining area, and a large fire pit surround the CH+D • Winter 2018

Winsome Windermere One West Ashley homeowner wished to turn his outdated house into a modern space to entertain and chose Classic Remodeling & Construction for the job.
R
aymond Minnis, a resident in the coveted Windermere area, knew he wanted to remodel his house that was built in the early 1950’s into a special place to host family and friends, but he also hoped to come home to a relaxing retreat after traveling and working long hours. When he met with the team at Classic Remodeling & Con-

struction, he knew they were the right people to turn those dreams into reality. After their initial interview and consultation, in which Raymond and Classic Remodeling & Construction’s in-house designer did a detailed walk-through to discuss every aspect about the older house that needed to be updated, it was
time to get to work. “We took what is now the dining and living room areas all the way down to the studs and extended the area beyond the original walls to build Raymond’s kitchen,” explains Jason Wagner, the project manager for Classic Remodeling & Construction. The main goal was to create a spacious cookery for Raymond while also opening that part

of the floor plan to provide plenty of space for guests to interact while he’s entertaining. From there, phase one of Raymond’s renovation was a fairly smooth process. “Classic Remodeling & Construction’s whole team worked with me, whether I was selecting countertops for the kitchen or discussing how many feet I would want between the different living room, dining room, and kitchen areas of the floor plan.
And the in-house designer I worked with was extremely helpful in driving those decisions forward,” describes Raymond. For the Classic Remodeling & Construction team, there were only a few surprises once they opened up the walls. “Since this is an older house, it’s common to find a little rot around crawlspaces and such. We found a little more than anticipated, but it was a simple fix that Raymond was happy to make,” says Jason. They chuckle as they reminisce about the addition
made to house in the late 70’s, which was a little worse for wear when they began their work. Phase two of this West Ashley remodel involved completely gutting Raymond’s bathroom. Again, Raymond recalls that it was a seamless process. “I had fun searching online for pictures of bathrooms I liked, and then spoke with the designer to find just the right combination of tiles and finishes.” For the flooring and the shower seating, he CH+D • Winter 2018

Coastal Farmhouse Cheer When it came time to remodel their long-time Isle of Palms rental, the Bolicks did a little digging to find just the right team for the job.
L
ong-time homeowners Elaine and Tim Bolick recently decided to settle down in the Isle of Palms home they’ve rented to vacationers during the summer seasons for the better part of two decades. As owners of a furniture and upholstery business in North Caro-

lina, Elaine and Tim both understood that the level of care and change their rental house would need was significant. “It was a major overhaul project, so we took it down to the studs,” Elaine explains. “The floor plan was tight and there was a lot of outdated paneling on the walls.”
Armed with her business prowess and years of knowledge in the wholesale industry, as well as her experience as an interior designer, Elaine set out to find the right team to design their dream home, which is how she discovered Carolina Lumber Sourcing and Axon Homes. “I knew that we wanted a coastal farm-

house style for the interior. Plus, it was important to open up the main living areas and add another bedroom and bathroom for visitors. With all of that in mind, Tim and I met with a few builders and Peter at Axon Homes stood out to us,” describes Elaine. Peter Oakes, owner of Axon Homes, and Becca Barton, Axon Homes’ Selections Coordinator, put together a plan that fit the Bolick’s lifestyle perfectly. From
there, Becca and Elaine specifically worked together to ensure each detail of the renovation came together seamlessly. One aspect of the home’s design that Elaine took special interest in was the flooring. It was particularly important to her to select the ideal material for the island abode. With a bit of research, Elaine learned of Carolina Lumber Sourcing and contacted Bill

Elaine and Bill’s attention to detail can also be seen in the Pecky Cypress that Carolina Lumber sourced for Elaine for accents in different areas of the home. The dramatic white washed beams in the living area catch the eye, while the same white washed cypress on the ceilings of the dining room and kitchen is more intricately showcased. “All of the woodworking was done on site so

P
ast-its-prime travertine tile and well-worn carpet throughout the first floor meant that the Jones’s home needed a facelift when they purchased it, but that didn’t hinder their vision for the house they planned to call home. With a couple of ideas about the style of flooring they were shopping for, the homeowners, Jimmy and Laura Jones, spoke with several local flooring companies to find the right products and advice. They opted to work with Rob and Kathy Bullock’s team with Floor Coverings International of Charleston. “What initially drew our attention was their mobile showroom,” explains Jimmy. “Knowing that they would come to us and that we could see the samples in our own home was essential to choosing the right types of flooring for our lifestyle.” The mobile showroom that Floor Coverings International of Charleston brings to a home isn’t even the best part of the Jones’s experience with this team of pro-
fessionals. “It’s vital to understand the functions that your flooring will be providing. s a kid, I always knew that the news was important. My parents would pounce on both the morning and evening newspapers and would faithfully watch local and national news shows daily. I remember wanting to be a part of something so vital to so many people. I
got my first taste of that power in the 7th grade writing for the Puma Press and truly fell in love with all aspects of news reporting—even if our reporting was about cafeteria food and Valentine’s Day carnation giveaways. My career path took a few different turns along the way, but I’m thankful I found my way back into the world of journalism in some capacity. Our cover star, Dana Perino, held fast and true to her childhood dreams even though the route wasn’t a straight line for her either. Dana’s career has led her to many exciting opportunities. She became the first Republican woman to be White House Press Secretary during the George W. Bush administration, was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Broadcasting Board of Governors during his tenure, became a successful author, philanthropist, and is now a staple at the Fox News network with her television shows, The Daily Briefing and The Five. When Dana’s not in New York or visiting Capitol Hill, she and her husband, Peter, along with their much-adored pup, Jasper, retreat to Bluffton, South Carolina. Dana and Peter took the Charleston Home + Design team on a tour of their Lowcountry home and Dana shared more about how she has become the woman she is today.

Tell me a little bit about your family and your life as a kid. I was born in Wyoming. I grew up in Colorado. My family on my father’s side ranched and still ranches to this day. It is in the Black Hills of Wyoming, which is about 80 miles west of Mount Rushmore. My great great grandparents homesteaded that area in the late 1800s. It’s a cattle ranch with quarter horses. I spent all of my summers, Christmases, and vacations doing all of that kind of thing.

What were you like as a child? I was always a very early to bed, early to rise kind of person because that’s the way our household was. I was interested in politics and my dad and I both loved the news. In third grade, my dad started a tradition with me where I had to read the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post every night before he got home from work and choose two articles to discuss with him before dinner. That really started my interest in journalism and in government. From there, I went on
to join the Speech Team, which I highly recommend to all kids. That is how I actually ended up going to college; I went on a Speech Team scholarship. How did you go from a kid in Colorado to Capitol Hill? I went to a small school—the University of Southern Colorado. I was a country music DJ working overnights and I waited tables as well. During that time I was studying Mass Communications. After that, I went on to graduate school to pursue Public

Affairs Reporting, but then I started doing the work and I didn’t love it. I remember one day, I was supposed to be covering the State House, but they’re only in session a certain number of days, so I got assigned to cover a trial. It was the first day of the trial and my assignment was to get an interview with this woman whose twoyear-old son had been murdered. I got to the courthouse and I remember
thinking ‘this is not my thing.’ I circled her about three times and I couldn’t do it. I went back to my bureau and had to just say, ‘Sorry. I didn’t get the interview.’ Later, I ended up going to Capitol Hill working for a congressman and I was answering phones. Six weeks later I got a position as a press secretary on the House side for a congressman from Colorado.
It sounds like you’ve always been hardworking. Have you always been confident and brave to speak in front of others? No. I don’t think anybody is really. In fact, the number one fear of all Americans, and perhaps all people, but specifically Americans, is public speaking. I think I’ve always wanted to do journalistic work and I’ve always liked television. I loved CH+D • Winter 2018

60 Minutes as a kid; in fact, my dad used to set a timer because I’d be so nervous that I would miss the show, because this was before we had DVRs and things like that. But in order to overcome what is a natural instinct to be reticent about public speaking, I joined the speech team. The other thing that helped me going forward was my first time filling in for Tony Snow, who was the White House Press Secretary at the time. I was filling in for him and I was so nervous because not only are you on camera so people are watching you, but you’re speaking on behalf of the President of the United States. Of course you don’t want to mess up or be made fun of, but like with anything, once you start doing it a little bit, you become more confident. The way I was able to continue to do it with confidence is that I would study all of the time and I still do that to this day. I’m reading the papers just like that tradition I started with my dad. Your choices during and after high school seem to have paved your path to today. What advice do you
have for young people about to graduate high school? I know that there’s a movement afoot to say that college isn’t necessary, but I still say that it is important. The other thing is, after I wrote The Good News Is, I realized one thing that I wish I had written but didn’t is that I hope they will not worry their young lives away. I did. I worried all of the time. When I wrote the book, and I looked back at all of the points along the way that were career changes and improvements, they were not ones that I had planned. They were all random. I was prepared in that I had studied and had met a lot of people. That brings me to another piece of advice for young women, which is that you have to start building your network early. I don’t really like that phrase as much as I actually mean ‘make friends,’ but what I mean by that is that men are very good at building a network naturally. Women, and I don’t know why, don’t seem to do it as much. CH+D • Winter 2018

I read that you’ve done quite a bit of work with trying to help women with that challenge, especially with the Minute Mentoring program. Can you explain that a bit?
can get fresh people because the President is going to have a lot of work to do until the last day. I had talked with my husband and we had decided I was going to leave and I intended to resign. Well, on that particular resignation day, the Communications Director came up to me and asked if we could speak after a meeting. That’s when he told me, “The President wants to make you the Press Secretary.” I didn’t tell him that I was about to quit. About two hours after I found out, I had a reason to go into the Oval Office for a policy meeting and there’s a great picture of that interaction where he [the President] is looking at me and I’m looking and him and he is grinning like, “you got the job!” He’s been like a second father to me in a lot of ways and I admire him in so many ways, too.
When I left the White House, I felt an obligation to try to help other young women who were asking questions kind of like what you’re asking now. Minute Mentoring really began partly because I was overwhelmed by requests for people to get together for coffees or lunches or people asking me to call their granddaughter, niece, or someone. Honestly, I didn’t have time for all of that and I was explaining the situation to my friend when we went to this event on Capitol Hill. It was a bipartisan women’s networking group’s meeting, and I was their speaker for that month; I felt like I had given them my best advice during that event, but during the photo line, I’d say 80 of them asked me if we could get coffee or something. As we were leaving, I was telling my friend Jamie that I just wished I could get all of them together at once, because they all want to meet individually, but they all wanted to ask relatively the same things. Jamie then asked me why wouldn’t I just go and do that. I think Dee Martin, who was one of the original founders, came up with Minute Mentoring. I was actually about to leave that job because I had exhausted all that I could do as deputy and I was tired because I had been there seven years. The Chief of Staff had said to everyone that if you don’t think you can make it until the end, it’d be better for you to leave so we

How did your time under that administration help you with your time under the Obama administration?
Oh, well being the White House Press Secretary means that you touch on all of the policy issues across the board and you get all of this experience. When I transitioned into television I was able to put things in context and to really understand things and say, ‘well, actually I think he was meaning this,’ or ‘this is how it works.’ President Obama appointed me to the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which is a bipartisan board that oversees all of our radio efforts outside of the country. cinating. Basically, I get a performance review every night. Sean Hannity actually told me that early on, ‘Don’t look at ratings or the criticism and over time, you’ll see success.’ I’m lucky that I work on a show where we laugh a lot. We take the issues seriously but we don’t take ourselves that seriously. We use wit and funny videos in order to tell a story. I will say, though, regarding the criticism during the 2016 election, it was horrific. There were days where I felt like I needed to curl up in a ball under my desk. Peter would try to help me but there is nothing you can really do. Then I found out later that about half of the criticism was actually bots from Russia—they weren’t even real people. The ways that they

tried to influence the election were many and one of them was to take commentators off the battlefield. If you’re being criticized for something that you say, the chances are you will say less. Do you ever have strangers try to talk about politics with you? Not really actually. I think people try to give us a break. If I ever have a chance to see fans, and there are a lot of them, they usually just say that they love the show and ask if Greg is really that funny or if Kimberly can really walk in those shoes. One of the things that we love about South Carolina and coming here for a getaway is that, I don’t know what people’s politi-
cal preferences are and I don’t typically ask, but I get the feeling that there is a lot of support down here and, in particular, support for my former boss. I don’t talk about politics outside of the show because I do so much on the show. Politics is part of what I do, and not who I am. Speaking of separation and getting away from things, how did you first come down here to South Carolina? We first came here to attend a wedding for Scott Stanzel and Priscilla Jones. I had never been to the Lowcountry. We drove down here from DC with my girlfriend Jeanie Mamo and were coming down that five-mile long road that leads into this particular area and I remember thinking to myself, ‘what sort of magical place is this?’ We had the best time that weekend. Peter and I came down to Bluffton by ourselves for
a week about a year after that. Later, we decided to build a house down here. Kris Taylor, who is the designer here today, helped me and I kind of gave her free reign. We did a few email exchanges and met once. We thought at first we’d rent it out, but after coming down here and seeing the house, we knew that we would never rent it. That could change in the future, but right now this is just such an oasis for us. Actually, because of Jasper, we met our best friends, Jeff and Tracy Schyberg, who have a house here, too. We’ve been able to make a lot of friends in Palmetto Bluff, and I’ve lived away from home for over 22 years and this is the most like home than any other place that I’ve been. We like to gather our friends and family here. We don’t have children together, but Peter has children from a previous marriage, and they’ve come to visit from
Scotland. Actually, sitting right here in this living room, we’ve started a sort of old-fashioned tradition of playing charades at night. It’s so much fun and the kids get so into it. Also, during the holidays we do a family scavenger hunt. How does your design aesthetic here differ from you other places? This home is very much in tune with the Lowcountry from the colors to the mix of wood and iron that we do throughout. I wanted a place that was comfortable where people could feel like nothing is going to get broken. We have the big round table and the island is large enough for people to gather around and even from a fabric standpoint, it is just fun and easy. Nobody has to take their shoes off. It’s a cozy place to be. Also, we rarely watch TV here. We might turn it on if there is a game or something, but we don’t really

What do you do for fun while in South Carolina? We started taking tennis lessons down here and we love it. We needed an activity that Peter and I could do together that didn’t involve checking your phone. We both wanted to play tennis because it is something you can do anywhere in the world and you can do it with friends. Peter has gotten very good. I’m not that good, but I enjoy it a lot. We like to walk three to 5 miles with the dog every morning. We’ll go for a bike ride or hit the pool. In the fall or winter we will kayak. My favorite thing that I’ve learned about since coming here is a verb called “porching.” Of course, the food in South Carolina is amazing and I try to catch up on my sleep because it is so quiet compared to New York. What do you see for yourself and Peter going forward?

We brought all of our pictures and mementos from life to South Carolina. I’m not a very sentimental person. I don’t have a lot of possessions that I really care about except for a few things. One

would be a painting that George W. Bush did of Jasper when he was a puppy. That is one thing I’d be very upset about if I lost that. Having worked at the White House and having been all around the world, especially to Africa, obviously we like nice things, but we are pretty cognizant that we have so much, and a lot of people around the world have nothing. I don’t know if that is part of the reason why I’m not very sentimental about items, but I’m really not.
This is the longest I’ve been at a job and I just signed another contract to stay on longer. The thing about being on the news is that it is always changing everyday. Also, this is what I’ve always wanted to do since I was a little kid—it just took me a long way to get there and I have a really great platform. I have a chance to talk about more than just politics. If I go to Africa for Mercy Ships or if I do something for Companions for Heroes, Fox lets me talk about it. I realize I have a voice. After hearing somebody talk about something that I’ve said on the show, and it definitely isn’t so much about having power, but it’s a realization that I really have a voice. I don’t think I’m going to do anything different in the future. Peter and I do think that there will be an extended time in the future where we are in Africa where we would volunteer. It is something that we really want to try to do.

What were the design goals of this project? The circa 1830’s home needed to live more like an open floor plan rather than a typical Charleston single, so we removed the two main interior walls, added beams, exposed the stairwell, and were very careful to preserve historic features like the brick, pine, beams, windows, and beadboard.
What makes this space so unique? Definitely the burst of green against the historic backdrop of old brick and antique heart pine floors. A modern Emily Brown abstract made the most impact by adding a little excitement. CH+D • Winter 2018

RISING WATER WORRIES There can be high tide flooding any given day in Charleston and the surrounding areas. When inclement weather strikes, the nuisance problem of flooded waterways can turn into a damaging and catastrophic event. Throughout this special feature, we take a look at some of the causes of this flooding, some of the steps the government and various organizations are taking to help, and what you can do as a Holy City resident to improve conditions.

Over time, it hasn’t gone unnoticed that flooding was a problem in the area. Beginning in the mid-1800s the government began trying to improve drainage situations. Unfortunately, a lot of those efforts fell short; the original system’s infrastructure wasn’t large enough to support the issue because the pipes were too small. Since then, major changes and attempts at
improvements have been made. Millions of dollars have been poured into drainage system improvements, research, and stormwater ponds just to name a few. The Lowcountry experiences different forms of flooding. The catastrophic flooding associated with major storms is one and the high-tide, or commonly called “nuisance” flooding, is the other. This nuisance flooding tends to be what residents see at many intersections in low-lying locations on standard rainy days. “Unfortunately, both types appear to be increasing at a fairly alarming rate,” explains Winslow Hastie, who is the current Chief Preservation Officer, and soon-to-be President and CEO, of the Historic Charleston Foundation. “Having three major storm events in the last three years has been a massive wake-up call.”
Residential Impacts
A
side from turning many commutes into a roadway puzzle, serious residential impacts have occurred, and continue to occur, because of water damage. Since water damage often continues to deteriorate what it plagues long after things have dried up if not attended to, this is an issue that homeowners should take seriously. With the increased flooding over the past several years, there are certain things homeowners should look out for beyond the obvious evidence of damage. “Mold can grow within 48 hours of a water event so it is imperative to completely dry out the area immediately,” says Jamey Bradham of Nano Environmental Solutions of Charleston. “Obvious signs of fungal development from water damage are staining and physical fungal growth— especially on sheetrock.” From time-to-time, evidence occurs in other fashions. “Sometimes homeowners will say they can smell mold and mildew, which can be caused by excessive moisture. Others may notice that their floors are cupping upward. And, other times, painted surfaces will discolor and streak when moisture levels are higher than they should be,” adds Trey Strock of Strock Enterprises Design & Remodel. Even people who are brand new to the area are not exempt from the headaches of water damage. When looking to purchase a home in the Lowcountry, it is important to research and be an observant buyer. “Check under the home's crawl space for evidence of water level lines, wet or moldy insulation around the HVAC ducts, and rust around any metal fasteners,” adds Dan Logan of Stono Construction. “Have a professional do a mold test; mold could be present without visible signs.” Unfortunately, aside from emotional stress that home damage causes, there are often severe financial impacts as well. Hardwood flooring, HVAC repairs, foundation fixes, and
yard overhauls just begin the list of pricey impacts. “Mold and mildew, wood rot, corrosion, poor indoor air quality, odors, and insect and pest infestation, are just a few of the things that occur with poor waterproofing,” explains Michael Connolly, Marketing Manager Lowcountry Basement Systems. Other symptoms and problems are, “excessive energy loss, that can cause cold floors, high energy bills, and greater wear and tear on HVAC equipment,” includes Connolly. Homes all throughout Charleston and the surrounding areas have faced serious damage. From Kiawah to Summerville and everything in between, many homeowners have had to take measures to repair or rebuild, and have needed to take steps to help ward off or lessen future problems from happening.
Cleaning Up Afterwards
B
efore homeowners can take measures to lessen, or perhaps avoid, future issues, fixing the current problems at hand must occur. Individuals can tackle debris cleanup and smaller projects, but professionals should look at larger complications. Ignoring problems typically leads to larger troubles down the road. Having a professional assess storm damage is important. Owners should consider having a roof checked by an expert to see if any damage occurred or find out if any siding on the higher parts of a home has been compromised. Walking throughout and around a structure consistently for a few days can help reveal what needs to be fixed. Once this has been evaluated, source the necessary materials or professionals. “Acquiring at a minimum two to three estimates from licensed and insured contractors should be your first step. The temptation and eagerness to ‘jump’ on the first contractor is going to be real, however, be wise and get a few quotes,” advises Tommy Welch of 1st Class Painting & Restoration, LLC. With the time it takes to go through insurance channels and a high demand for home repair with a limited pool to pull from has left some homeowners in the lurch. “Typically, with insurance claims taking so long to process, people are just finishing their repairs when the next storm hits in the fall. Imagine having that happen to you three years in a row,” remarks Winslow.
Small-Scale Solutions
L
ocal government agencies and groups are putting together plans to combat these serious and complicated problems on large scales. One local group, Enough Pie, has launched an initiative titled “Awaken V” that details numerous facets of this issue. of that accumulated water into already crowded stormwater drains. These stormwater drains then send excess water into often already-at-capacity marshlands and waterways. A pervious driveway allows for the water to percolate down into the ground where it falls like nature intended it to do, therefore, leaving homeowners an aesthetically pleasing driveway that is reducing the negative impact on the environment. “One important thing that homeowners should do, and sometimes must do, is to have a professional develop a stormwater plan for your property,” says Randy Robinson, Bloomberg, Chief Building Inspector & Flood Plain Manager Hope for Sullivan’s Island. “Having this plan for where the stormwater will go is going to create longterm solutions to a homeowner’s water problems and help them and their neighbors.”
For individual homeowners looking to protect their investments, there are a variety of possible solutions for a myriad of problems. Everything from landscaping solutions to inexpensive weather stripping fixes to massive overhauls is on the table. “Filling in low areas at the beginning of a project is cheap insurance because there is no substitute for elevation. More traditional and simple retrofit solutions abound. “Add gutters and extend them to the outer property lines. Make sure you have proper drainage extending away from the house and swells between the property lines flowing to a drainage area or street,” includes John Barrineau from Stack’s Nursery. This will help to keep water from pooling at the foundation of a home which can cause cracking and other damage. French drains or other ground-level solutions are available as well if low-lying areas still retain water in a yard. “We are always trying to keep water away from a house so we might use French drains for that or if we’re doing a patio, we would use permeable pavers or a paver on top of a permeable setting bed,” explains JR Kramer from REMARK Landcape Architecture. For an option that includes more colorful and delicate features in a yard, some homeowners are opting for rain gardens, if the conditions allow, to help put some of the standing water to use. “For rain gardens, we will put native plants in a shallow depression that has soil that will percolate well. It doesn’t work in clay areas because the water still has to go somewhere,” adds JR. Patios aren’t the only surfaces that can, and is some cases must, be pervious. Some municipalities in the Lowcountry, like Sullivan’s Island, have requirements specifically outlining what percentage of a lot must feature natural landscaping, impervious surfaces, and pervious hardscapes. Driveways, for example, are often a large asphalt or concrete space that can create a lot of water runoff during rainy conditions sending all

t will take years for major changes to take place and it is yet to be determined what those large-scale changes might even be. For more immediate, localized results, owners can evaluate what can be done around their own properties to help relieve flooding issues as well as, perhaps, even improve their local environments. Slowing or rerouting the flow of water in one yard might create a ripple effect that has positive impacts throughout. Going green and being more eco-friendly may also help to reduce the impact an individual makes on the environment and therefore yielding fewer side effects. Consulting professionals about what can be completed in a cost effective manner may yield quality results for years to come. When Lowcountry residents are away from their abodes, it is important to pay attention to road closure notifications during times of flooding, to practice safe driving habits, and to plan ahead and allow time for rerouting on flood-prone days. The adage, “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it” is something that Charleston appears to be heeding. By examining the Lowcountry’s history and how problems have evolved over the years, community members from various levels are working to reduce the impacts of historical choices, rising sea levels, and devastating weather conditions.
