EDITOR’S NOTE
E ndless Days of Summer
hammock in the shade or a sunshine by the pool kind of person, this issue contains all of your favorite ways to enjoy Charleston’s illustrious summer season. So don’t walk, run to the pages of our Luxe Outdoor Living feature, where I promise the pages are only piping with too many ideas, not the actual Charleston humidity. Speaking of inspiration, our cover star, Liz Martin, one of Charleston’s premier influencers and entrepreneurs, opens her house to Charleston Home + Design to share how she was encouraged and motivated to change her career from the medical field and yet still maintain her desire to help others. In Queen of Color, she chats about her roots, her adorable downtown home, her entrepreneurial endeavors, and how becoming a social media influencer has changed the ways in which she uses that influence to be a mouthpiece for health and wellness through enjoying every day like it’s the weekend.
A
fter living in Charleston for almost a decade, there are still aspects of the city and the greater area that I have yet to discover. There is always something new to see and do and experience, which has been a source of never-ending excitement. But my love for the city blossoms to new heights along with the Confederate Jasmine and the Wisteria every year when summer rolls back around and it feels like life has been restored to our city. Colors are more vibrant, flowers are in full bloom, and the city is full of energetic people.
Now that summer is here, it’s time to soak up the sun, live it up by the pool, and enjoy the time we have with family, but it’s also important to be prepared for the predictably unpredictable future. Considering the last three years have sent three major hurricanes barreling toward our coastline, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide of protective products that homeowners can install on their homes, regardless of whether the home is still in process or just needs a little retrofitting. Professionals from across the Lowcountry have joined forces to explain how these products work and why they are worth the investment. Throughout all these pages, I hope you find the ideas, information, and encouragement you need to start your next Lowcountry project.
In this issue you’ll find innumerable amounts of inspiration for all things outdoor living-related. Whether you’re a

MEET + GREET
Organization Station Dena Brown, co-owner of Closets by Design, and Sales Manager, Bart Strong, chat with
Photography by Callie Cranford
Charleston Home + Design Magazine about their Charleston-based team and all things closet design related.
How and when did Closets by Design get off the ground?
What scope of services do you provide for homeowners who work with Closets by Design?
Dena: We considered many franchise opportunities beginning in the spring of 2017, opened Closets by Design in January 2018, and have been running at warp speed ever since, which has set 30 years of franchise records. Bart: All Closets by Design franchises are independently owned and operated. I have worked for Troy and Dena for the past 10 years. When they told me they were opening a Closets by Design franchise in Charleston and offered me a position, it was a no brainer.
Dena: Our primary sale is, of course, closets but we also sell many pantries, garage cabinets, flooring, and even slat wall. We’ve also built entertainment centers, several home offices and butlers pantries. Bart: We pride ourselves on being a complete storage solution for our customers. We also provide stand-alone cabinets for use in other areas of the home.
What experience can people expect when they work with Closets by Design? Dena: The first thing our clients can expect is respect for their time. We believe in efficient and quality service and providing a top-notch product. Bart: Our customer experience is our number one focal point throughout the process. Each of our designers are trained to provide designs and pricing during the initial consultation. We manufacture everything in-house, as well, and all of our installers are employees, which gives us complete control of every project so that we can guarantee our customers will have a great experience from initial consultation to installation. 62 • CH+D • Summer 2019
Do you have any advice for homeowners who are looking to update their closets or other storage areas of their home? Dena: My advice is to do it now. This is especially relevant as we are offering special financing options in order to work with our clients’ budget. We want to provide a “custom” storage solution in the sense that the solution is built completely to fit that client’s space. Bart: Our consultations are free so give us a call because our designers will work with you to determine what can be done to solve your problem, and work within your budget to make sure you get the best bang for your buck. For more information, call Closets by Design at (866) 484-8130 or visit closetsbydesign.com.

HE SAID / SHE SAID
Modern Farmhouse Décor Cindi and Carson Rembert, owners of Blu Cotton and Custom Carolina Hanging Beds, go head-to-head on their favorite styles for the custom bed swings they provide to Lowcountry homeowners.
He Said: Carson Said: A stained finish is definitely my favorite. The stain brings out the natural beauty of the wood we use to craft the hanging beds. It really enhances the grain and other unique characteristics of the wood.
Carson Said: I prefer the more neutral or lighter color cushions because they create a simpler, more modern style that looks great in any setting.
Carson Said: Chains or cables are a great way to add a modern flare to your hanging bed. These options provide a sturdy, metallic style that withstand the Lowcountry’s weather as well.
She Said: Painted or Stained Finish?
Neutral or Colorful Cushions?
Favorite Hanging Hardware?
Cindi Said: Painted is great because there are a lot more design options with colors. It acts as a blank canvas and gives you the option to match furniture and fabrics. Also, with paint, you can distress it to create more of a rustic look.
Cindi Said: I love vibrant, fun colors! Using bright colors allows you to show off your personal style and adds interest to your indoor or outdoor living space.
Cindi Said: Rope is by far my favorite hardware selection. It gives the hanging bed a very relaxed, rustic vibe that is so inviting. And it can add a nautical flare, too, which is perfect for Charleston.

HOMEWORK
At Home With
The Delpino Family Nathan Delpino of Delpino Custom Homes has been working in the construction industry for over a decade and began his business as a renovation company in 2006. He has since grown Delpino Custom Homes into a luxury custom home builder and used his unique skills to create a stunning home for his wife, Kara, and their four children.
1 With four young children, Nathan
and Kara knew that they would need a functional space for the family to land when they come home and to keep everyone organized. Together they designed their mudroom with a water fountain for the kids and their friends, and ample storage space to hide the clutter of shoes, backpacks, and accessories. There’s also a table with a spacious top for finishing homework.
2 Accents of blue throughout bring a
coastal vibe to the Delpino’s abode. Nathan and Kara carried navy accents through the mudroom and kitchen for cohesiveness and added a separate wet bar area in the kitchen for entertaining. The custom cabinetry and trim that Nathan added to the space draws the eyes upward while the screen façade of the cabinetry gives it a modern twist.
3 The dining room was a must-have
aspect of their home, since the Delpinos love to entertain and also have a large family. Lighter blue hues continue the coastal feel of the home, and Nathan added reclaimed wood accents and custom trim to the ceiling for an open, rustic style. A custom barn door accent also hides the storage area that provides convenient access to any extra glassware, napkins, etc.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON
Unique, Recycled Countertops Elizabeth and Chris Fisher have worked for years to create a custom material that is both eco-friendly and special to each customer.
The Craftswoman:
Elizabeth assists homeowners in the design process. She advises homeowners to take a risk and use their surfaces as a way to express themselves. Elizabeth is part of a homeowner’s process from inception to completion.
The Craft:
Nothing is too big or too small for the GlassEco Surfaces team. They collect recycled glass from restaurants and curate custom countertops, fireplace surrounds, tabletops, and other surfaces for homeowners looking to add a unique feature to their space.
Their Backstory:
With an entrepreneurial mindset, Chris Fisher began Fisher Recycling when he realized that restaurants would pay him to take their glass. From there, he started a collection service to fulfill the need that hadn’t been met. After a while Elizabeth and Chris developed the custom glass countertops as another part of the business that builds on the recycling aspect.
The Process:
The glass is pulverized in a machine into different sizes. Once the glass is pulverized, Elizabeth and the team sift through the glass and pull out what is needed. The resin color, or base color, is selected and then the glass, or other materials that homeowners bring in or choose with Elizabeth, is added to the slab.
Their Philosophy:
Minimal waste is a huge factor in how GlassEco Surfaces operates. Their focus on minimal overage and reusing glass inventory ensures they don’t put anything in landfills. The process in which they make the surfaces doesn’t emit gas, has a low VOC rating, and contains 99 percent recycled content. For more information, call GlassEco Surfaces at (843) 554-6099 or visit glassecosurfaces.com.

GREENHOUSE
Environmentally Friendly Fencing When seeking an eco-friendly alternative to a wood or vinyl fence, consider an aluminum fence option. Aluminum fences made at Maner Fence and Specialties are created with 89 percent recycled materials from local sources. Using recycled aluminum saves 95 percent of the greenhouse gases that are otherwise emitted.
Not only is the production of the fence preventing the greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere, but it is a strong and enduring material. The powder coating that is used on Alumi-Guard products is environmentally friendly as well. The coating is made with no solvents and very minimal volatile organic compounds. This
means that the coating process is safer to complete and less messy. Aluminum fences are one of the most energy efficient options offered in the fence industry. For more information, call Maner Fence and Specialties at (843) 552-0242 or visit manersc.com.

Palladian Gray
For homeowners looking to build or remodel an eco-friendly home, there are many alternative products to choose from. One of those options is Vetrazzo material. Vetrazzo is a surface material that is made of recycled glass. It can be used on any surface such as countertops and tabletops. Vetrazzo is made of at least 85 percent recycled glass and is just as durable and strong as a granite countertop. Much of the glass used to curate a Vetrazzo countertop is sourced through neighborhood recycling programs. Other sources
of glass include drinking glasses, stemware, stained glass, and reclaimed glass. Not only is it durable, but it is also non-toxic so there are no hazardous chemicals, petroleum resins, or additives to worry about. Vetrazzo is a low-maintenance product as well. Simply clean it with soap and water, buff it and wax it a few times a year, and reseal it twice a year and it’s good to go. Mark Temple COMPANY:
Alair Homes
CREDENTIALS:
Mark studied business management at Charleston Southern University, where he began working alongside his partner at Alair Homes, Jennings Smith. After graduation, he and Jennings were doing most of the labor and he became very knowledgeable about every facet of construction and how that affects the process. Mark’s experience over the years has helped the Alair Homes team thoughtfully plan for each detail of a renovation or custom home build.
What were some of the must-have elements for the homeowners? Opening up the floorplan of this home was super important to the client. The areas where people would gather, such as the kitchen, back porch, and lounge area under the house were the spaces that he wanted to focus on. The team at Swallowtail Architecture did a fantastic job of designing a space that met the client’s needs.
Why was it particularly beneficial for these homeowners to work with a custom home builder? Whole-home renovations can be extremely complex and risky if you don’t thoroughly investigate and plan every facet of construction. Working with a custom home builder brings the expertise that ensures the highest levels of fit, finish, and the expert planning that brings it all to life.
How did you collaborate with the homeowners to ensure that the process ran smoothly and any challenges were easy to overcome? We prefer to collaborate with the client and architect as early as possible. We clearly defined goals for budget, schedule, finish level, and worked together to craft a plan that met all of the client’s objectives. Collaborating before significant time and money is invested on design work will equip your builder-architect team to provide the best advice and lead homeowners towards the most desirable outcome. Emily Stallings COMPANY:
Stallings Studio CREDENTIALS:
Spending her youth rearranging her bedroom, Emily realized she had a passion for design and decorating. She graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in Business Administration, and then received her certification in Interior Design. She is also a Certified True Color Expert. Emily formally launched Stallings Studio after honing her craft executing projects for friends and family.
What were some of the homeowner’s design goals? The homeowner wanted to update the kitchen into a fresh, vibrant space, keep the appliances and brighten the space. We accomplished this goal by painting the old oak cabinets and replacing the hardware. We also removed an oversized garden-size tub in the bathroom to accommodate a bigger shower and incorporated existing family heirlooms into a coastal, nautical palate.
What challenges did you overcome while redesigning this home? The homeowners were out of town during the renovation process which created an air of excitement, knowing that they would come home to their new space without the inconvenience of construction crews. Dave Kauffman of Kauffman Construction facilitated our ideas seamlessly. We also added upper cabinetry to the bathroom which can often be a challenge to match them perfectly to the lower cabinets.
What advice would you share with homeowners who are potentially seeking design help? Implementing the pieces you love in a room so you still retain a feeling of security in your space can be done without having to gut the whole space. Compiling a plan before choosing elements ensures the space is cohesive, too. The space should have a consistent flow to create the look and feel each client strives to achieve. Plus the proper placement and rearrangement of pieces that hold special meaning often times can bring new life to collectibles. YOUR MONEY’S WORTH
Taking a Look At The Cost of a
Professional Paint Job Paint is often more than surface deep. Most times, when people glance at the exterior of a home, they see the beauty and the history and they’re not looking for the things that need a little extra care. When homeowners get closer, it becomes more apparent what does need to be done and that’s where Marty Uczen of CertaPro Painters comes in.
Look Out for Signs
Marty knows exactly what to look for when he goes out to do the initial estimate for a home. One sign that it’s time to apply a new coat of paint is if there are chips and cracks in the current paint, especially on the siding in a trimmed-in corner, which occurs naturally in the Lowcountry environment. If these cracks aren’t repaired, it can cause water intrusion and rotting. Another sign to look out for that is more visible on darker surfaces is something called "chalking." Paint is wearing off of the surface, which is evidence that the paint is breaking down, again, due to the elements.
Prepare for Treatment
Before the CertaPro experts come in to do work on a home, they have to take certain steps to ensure that the paint will go on the surface properly and last the longest. Cleaning the surface is a vital step to prepare for a new coat of paint. Washing the home helps create good adhesion for the paint when Marty and his team are ready to recoat. Once the surface is cleaned and sanded down, CertaPro Painters will prime the surface prior to brushing on the fresh coat.
84 • CH+D • Summer 2019
The Process
Once the preparations are made, the CertaPro team can begin the paint process. Porches and decks typically require two coats of paint, depending on the condition. For spaces that are in good condition, CertaPro Painters uses two coats of super paint. If it’s a spot that only requires a touch up, they use something called duration paint, which is a one-coat product that has resins that make it more similar to a twocoat paint. The latex paint that CertaPro uses is a long-lasting product so the surfaces only need to be repainted every five to seven years. Once the process is completed, Marty also recommends that homeowners powerwash their homes once or twice a year.
Investing in a full-house repaint job can take a lot of time and money but recoating will ensure that the home’s life is extended for years to come. For more information, call CertaPro Painters at (843) 870-7856 or visit charleston.certapro.com

PRO ON THE GO
More Than Just Termite and Pest Control Taylor Broderick, lead termite treatment technician, Hank Worden, pest control manager, and Rashad Greer, termite technician at Ledford’s Termite & Pest Control, educated the CH+D team about the proper steps to follow to prevent pests and termites and what regular maintenance needs to be completed.

11:00am
(from left) Rashad Greer, Taylor Broderick, and Hank Worden of Ledford’s Termite & Pest Control
8:00am For both Taylor and Hank, their days start by reviewing their customer route schedule and ensuring that they have the correct tools and equipment for their appointments. Hank makes sure that he has the right amounts of pesticides and Taylor refills the tanks that were depleted in the previous day’s route before they leave. .
9:15am Hank’s first appointment is an estimate for pest control. Ledford’s Termite & Pest Control offers estimates for customers prior to actually treating the home. During the estimate, the technicians ask the customer if they have any questions or concerns with specific pest problems. The inspection or treatment is outlined for the customer so they know exactly what needs to be done in order to get rid of the pests. After the inspection, Hank reviews the findings with the customer and then puts together a plan of action for the treatment needed.
88 • CH+D • Summer 2019
10:05am It’s a morning of estimates for Taylor and Rashad. The duo heads out to their appointment where they go over an estimate and treatment plan for a home with Formosan termites. Formosan termites most often attack a structure from the ground, however, they are known to find wet or moist areas and establish an above ground nest or carton. They are most often found feeding on wood and other materials with cellulose in them, typically swarming at night during the months of May and June. Taylor comes up with a treatment plan for the homeowners which includes getting in the crawl space to treat.
The termite technicians are treating a home with an extensive infestation of Formosan termites. A contractor is called in to open the areas where hidden damage might exist. Termidor termiticide is the treatment of choice because it is the most successful at controlling the Formosans. The technicians treat the interior and exterior of the foundation walls as well as the voids in the structure and support piers under the house.
12:45pm Hank has a routine pest service next. The pests are under control, so he inspects susceptible areas and treats those places that could become problems areas before the next service. The maintenance service that Hank is providing these homeowners will help prevent future problems, whether that be with roaches, spiders, or ants.
2:00pm This regular pest service appointment starts with restricted use insecticides along with baits and dusts. The interior pest control is applied in cracks and crevices such as under the appliances, under the sinks, and in the closets. This particular house has had a reinfestation of spiders on the porches. Hank uses a long handled brush with a residual pesticide to knock down webs to get rid of this new crop of spiders. He then applies residual pesticides to the entry points around the exterior.
3:00pm The termite team start a small treatment that takes minimal time. This preventative treatment is required because the Lowcountry is known for
high termite activity. The Ledford’s team suggests that homeowners treat their homes before they have a problem as a precaution. The cautionary service is much more cost efficient than waiting until there’s a problem and then paying for repairs.
4:00pm Taylor’s final estimate of the day is to treat a house that he finds has an extensive Formosan termite infestation with severe damage. The termites have left holes and cracks in the wood, which will continue to worsen and cause more structural damage until the termites are eradicated. Like the home from earlier in the day, Termidor is the termiticide that is used to resolved the issue.
5:00pm All appointments have wrapped up for the day. The team finishes up paperwork at the office and determine their schedules for the next day to prepare. For more information, call Ledford’s Termite & Pest Control at (843) 766-8298 or visit ledfordspestcontrol.com.

That’s where we got the idea to design our backyard.” Bernie then approached Joe Summers, who had worked on his landscaping beforehand, to rework the backyard. Because Bernie and his wife love to entertain, they needed a space with great

Four planters frame the front and side entrances of the home at the stairs, while two more draw the eye to the end of the driveway nearest the aluminum fence. “Bernie and I walked through the selections of our planters and we talked about the overall look of his landscaping. From there it was easy to choose planters that fit with the historic
Charleston theme,” explains Ginger. Ginger also suggested that Bernie include other accent pieces that would draw attention and help keep the eye moving across both the front and the backyard. Together they chose two fountains that create a relaxing atmosphere with the sounds of flowing water. By installing two fountains, Bernie and Ginger then had to decide where to place them for optimum visibility, particularly in the backyard. Also important was finding a spot for the fountain that fit well with
the downtown garden inspired layout. Now that all of the plantings, furniture, and décor are in place, Bernie and his wife can entertain all they want thanks to the team effort of Ginger and Joe Summers. Bernie can spend time doing what he loves—nurturing and cultivating his new landscape to help it grow into the curated space that he has always dreamed of. ✴ For more information, call The Tree House at (843) 209-3335 or visit thetreehouseji.com. In this home’s case, the builder, GrayHawk Homes, reached out to Holy City Exteriors and sent them the plans. “When we came in, the house was built, it had windows, the doors were set, the roof was on and then we started installing our siding materials; trim materials and deck boards were provided as well,” Bryan expounds. “My job was to make sure that the materials arrived on time from our distributors, as well as scheduling labor, and making sure that the team was here
and installing everything properly.” On most build sites, the Holy City Exteriors crews will work until late afternoon, usually until the sun goes down, to ensure that they get all of the work done the right way and as quickly as possible. “When I come out in the morning, I show the crew the plans,” Bryan continues. “I get with the crew leader who is the person with the most experience and who understands what I’m trying to explain and I’ll walk the house with
him to go over reminders of what needs to be included on the home.” The team at Holy City Exteriors strives to provide the best experience for their clients. “We want to make sure that we are available to them whenever they need us,” Bryan mentions. “We want to ensure that we can continue to earn our client’s business and to build positive relationships between everyone we collaborate with.” ✴ For more information, call Holy City Exteriors at (843) 647-8807 or visit holycityexteriors.com. Practical Renovation For a certain I’ON family, it was time to reformulate the way their home fit with their lifestyle, which was why they chose to work with Classic Remodeling & Construction to accomplish their goal.
A
fter five years of living in their I’ON home, the couple knew that it was time to rework the interior of their home into a design that better fit their family’s needs. In order to do so, they spoke with several contractors to discuss the best renovation plan. “When Bob Fleming at Classic Remodeling & Construction walked through our home with us, it was

clear that he had a great vision for the work we wanted to do,” describes the wife of the pair. “He was the person who communicated the best with us, which was something that we really valued.” From there, Christy Ammerman, Classic Remodeling’s designer, partnered with the duo to hammer out the details of their daily routines, what they liked
about their home, and what needed to change to make the rooms more functional. “I always ask people how they live, because it’s nearly impossible to create the right design without getting to know the people I’m designing those spaces for,” explains Christy. She communicated constantly with the couple, since the family was living in New York for a year during the remodeling process.

(below left) The duo requested that the master bathroom have more counter space, so Christy designed a plan that separated the bathroom from the closet. (below right) Christy Ammerman of Classic Remodeling & Construction
“Bob, Christy, and the whole team were wonderful and made sure that we knew and approved of everything through each step,” says the lady of the house. The areas that required an overhaul were the most frequently used rooms in the home. “After our conversations, Christy knew almost exactly what we needed and wanted, especially in the kitchen,” adds the wife. The family needed a long island with plenty of counter and storage space. But most importantly, the kitchen’s floor plan
needed to be adjusted, because the original layout caused other areas in the open floor plan to feel awkward. Beyond the kitchen, Classic Remodeling added a full bathroom space on the first floor and redesigned both the master and third bathroom upstairs. The homeowners requested a better setup for their master bathroom that incorporated more counter space and to take out the large, built-in tub that they never used. With that space open, they expanded the shower and were also able to
separate the closet from the bathroom. Christy helped the couple design a large walk-in closet that was much more functional and aesthetically pleasing. All in all, the family now has an ideal design to accommodate the needs of all four family members without compromising the style of their coastal-traditional home. ✴ For more information, call Classic Remodeling & Construction at (843) 763-3297 or visit classicremodeling.com. to provide the right fit for their lifestyle. That’s when Steve brought in Michael McIntosh and his team at NextGen Automated to reorganize and update their security and audio-visual systems. “It was an extensive project in that Steve wanted everything brought up to the newest technology that 2019 has to offer,” describes Michael. “So we met
and drew up a plan that would include everything that would make Steve and his family comfortable in their home.” One of the most important questions that Michael asks when he meets with any homeowner is, “How do you consume your media?” From there, he narrows it down to specifics, like does that homeowner have a CD collection or is all of

their music digital? Does he or she prefer to watch movies from their blu-ray collection, or stream sports? Then Michael puts together a proposal for all of the equipment and network services that will be required for that homeowner to use their audio-visual technology smoothly. “Steve was a very fun and easy homeowner to work with because he was flexible and took suggestions that we made in the planning process.” For example, the projector system in the master suite (which was installed by the previous owner) no
longer worked and there was no other convenient or practical spot for a tv, so Michael and his team including lead techs, Mike Teston and Grant Dean, brought in a more mechanical solution. Instead of mounting a tv on the wall or placing it in an entertainment center, the guys at NextGen installed the tv on a robotic arm which hides under the bed and brings the tv out to display only when it’s being used. Another vital aspect of automating a home is the security system that NextGen puts in place for homeowners. “We redid the
camera system throughout the house, and updated all of the control panels,” adds Michael. “That way each aspect of the system can be accessed from the family’s smartphones from anywhere in the world.” With a brand new audio visual system and security in every part of the home, Steve and his family can check on their home while they’re away and enjoy every room while they are home. ✴ For more information, call NextGen Automated at (843) 871-8531 or visit nextgenautomated.com. It was this memory, as well as a memory of bed swings he saw in the Caribbean, that inspired him to start making his own swings. “Worry-free

Martin and his team take special care to assemble and install the bed swings. “Each bed swing got plenty of TLC,” expresses Martin. “We used mortise and tenon-type joinery and glue rather than putting screws into the boards. It takes time to get it right.” All of the materials that Martin sourced for this home are high quality and made for the

Martin’s team also assisted the family in selecting the fabrics for the bed swings that would best complement their style. “The design, production, and accessorizing is now our main focus to ensure that, like this family, we create the perfect look,” proclaims Martin. “Our recommendation is for homeowners to hire licensed contractors to install eye hooks in the ceiling and then we come back in and hang the bed swing.”

ichael Rooke has been exposed to the home building industry for many years. 40 years ago, his father started a home building company and passed the lessons he learned on to his son. When it came time for Michael to start building homes himself, he was fully armed with do’s and don’ts from his dad and his other experiences in the industry. 112 • CH+D • Summer 2019
Six years ago, Michael established, his own company, Rooke Custom Homes. More often than not, potential clients talk to Michael about their experiences with other home builders and often, that’s what leads them to Rooke Custom Homes. “We’re not a national, cookiecutter home builder,” Michael mentions. “We have a lot of house plans that
we can show people and recommend and when I meet with a new customer, we talk about what they’re looking for and what they want to spend.” If the client needs something different than plans that the Rooke team already has, Michael will enlist the help of one of his architects to create a different plan that fits their lifestyle. Michael will also help homeowners find a property if they

don’t already have a place to build. He works with real estate agents across town to find the client’s dream location. Once a homeowner approves Michael’s initial plans it’s time to embark on their home-building journey. Michael likes to keep his process simple. His goal is to take the stress of worrying about finances off of the homeowner so they have a more positive experience. Three weeks of planning usually follows, and once everything is approved, and everyone is
on the same page, the building begins. This project came to fruition after a real estate agent Michael knows approached him about the build. “He really liked this property, so we went from there and discussed house plans,” Michael expounds. “There’s a walkway to the creek and the small lot was part of the draw to this location.” The agent knew what features he wanted and how much he was willing to spend, so that kept the process pretty simple for Michael.
“He was a quick decision maker so we didn’t have any delays,” Michael added. Michael’s “boutique approach” to home building allows him to make each homeowner feel like they’re project is important. Because of that approach, Michael also ensures that he is always reachable for his customers. ✴ For more information, call Rooke Custom Homes at (843) 532-1328 or visit rookehomes.com. ’ve always been attracted to bright, happy colors. It was a trait that I thought, as I grew older, I would outgrow, since decorating my home with my 10-year-old self’s ideal Lisa Frank-inspired collage probably wouldn’t work out in my favor. But I’ve discovered over the years that the things which make you happy don’t always change and it’s the simple things that bring the most genuine kind of joy. My love for color is one of those joy-bringers that has not swayed with time, and when I met Liz Martin for the first time, it was clear she and I were cut from the same cloth. Her home was filled with natural light and bright décor that inspired a child-like comfort I hadn’t experienced in a long time. On top of that, her Instagram account, Charleston Weekender, has been a great source of smiles, simply because of how colorful and honest her pictures and words are. It can definitely be said that her desire to encourage a healthy lifestyle in others is the reason her social media influence has been so successful and far-reaching, and why others eagerly seek to follow in her footsteps.

Liz, you grew up in the mountains, correct? What was that like for you and what brought you to Charleston?
Potomac River. Whenever we would travel and then have to go back home, I was just so bummed to be back in D.C.
Yes, I grew up in Asheville, North Carolina and lived there until college. It was a great place for my roots to grow, though it looks pretty different now than it did when I was a kid! When it came time to choose my career, I attended NC State and then UNC Chapel Hill. Both are great schools and I loved learning there.
Back in 2011, Jonathan and I were getting married in Charleston. It finally occurred to me that it would be so much easier if we moved here, not to mention we would be so much happier in a less stressful environment. D.C. is such a fastpaced city and it just was not a place that I felt I could thrive long-term.
When I was at NC State I dated a guy at The Citadel. After we broke up I was more sad that I wouldn’t get to go to Charleston anymore than anything else. [laughs] Eventually, when I was with my now husband, I just made him start coming to visit Charleston. We loved it so much. We lived in D.C. for three years and I had this feeling of being landlocked. All we had was the

I studied speech pathology while I was in school because I love talking to people, helping them, and learning new things. When we first moved to Charleston, I
was a speech therapist for the first few years that we were here. Our true motive to move here was for a major quality of life change. D.C. is all about the grind and the hustle and what you do for a living. My husband and I agreed that we wanted a much more chill, quality of life change. Plus, Jonathan was so much happier, too, when we got to Charleston. [laughs] It felt like we just sat in traffic all the timein D.C., and that can be frustrating, even if you don’t really notice it’s happening. Little things like that, which can often grow into bigger problems, are why we moved. I worked as a speech therapist until 2015, but I started gradually feeling like I wanted to do something more, something for myself. I think so many people are in that situation right now. I often hear people say things like they want to do something for themselves, but what

They were so cute and wonderful and I absolutely adored them. But the healthcare industry now is not about personal connections, or patient care. At least, it didn’t feel that way to me, so a lot of the time I spent working with my patients was cut short and I felt like I wasn’t doing all that I could because of time, money, and insurance restrictions and such. Eventually, I was so drained, I came home to take a nap everyday. That does sound draining! What sparked your idea for moving out of that field and into something different?

How did you progress from focusing on interior decorating to the social media aspect of Charleston Weekender? When I started doing interior decorating and a product line, I didn’t really know the first thing about marketing. I did, however, understand that having quality images were important for my website & Instagram, so I started focusing my efforts on creating colorful lifestyle images. I had heard blogging was helpful for your Search Engine Optimization, so I would also share the photos there and incorporate tips for entertaining or Charleston activities. My following began to grow organically because people liked the photos I was sharing, and because I would feature other brands besides my own in my lifestyle shoots. I’ve since transitioned out of home decorating, and now I enjoy instead utilizing those styling skills to create content for other brands who partner with me on my blog. I love promoting local brands as well as national companies who have to do with entertaining or weekend fun.
I started asking myself, “What can I do?” I was working four days a week full-time. I kept thinking that I needed to take that fifth day and try to do something creative. I just had a hard time figuring out that one thing. was also a far cry from budget-conscious. I quickly learned, too, that I didn’t want to keep selling my products in markets where I had to set up and break down all the time. I knew from that experience that my products sold a lot better in person than they did online, but it was also a lot of effort. Most importantly, I learned that I was enjoying the parts of my job that provided people with a service, with something that was really helpful for them, which was the fundamental reason I became a speech pathologist. I love to help people. I enjoy talking to them, hearing their stories, getting to know them, and those are still my favorite parts of doing what I do now. Charleston Weekender began as a blog, which was your way to encourage other local Charlestonians to, as you like to say “Make every day feel like the weekend,” correct?
Right! That got started because I was in the thick of my job as a speech pathologist and I got so bummed about so many aspects and restrictions that came with that job, that I started playing tourist in my own town just to have something to look forward to. Getting out and enjoying our everyday surroundings is something that we so often take for granted, anyway. I was also taking my products to and from different markets, focusing on my Instagram and photo shoots that went along with that, and was still doing the the interior decoration at the time. But I realized that I didn’t have to do everything, and honestly, at that time, I was doing too many things. That, combined with my medical job, got me thinking that I really wanted to dig into the blog and pinpoint a niche that worked for me in terms of finding a subject that I enjoyed writing about. Then it turned into me talking about quality of life and how to achieve a well-balanced lifestyle. A lot of the material I drew from was how
exploring Charleston (usually with my husband, but also with friends, and occasionally a solo mission) made me continuously fall in love with the city where I live. All of that kind of led into my theme for Charleston Weekender (i.e. the social media, blog, and travel guides), which is “Make every day feel like the weekend.” I still hope with every blog post that it inspires everyone to live like a tourist in their own town, specifically in Charleston, because of our gorgeous surroundings and endless opportunities for fun. How did you grow Charleston Weekender from a lifestyle blog into what is now a successful, sought-after tool that you use to collaborate with other local influencers and business owners alike? strategy. Instagram is a great way to build business, whether a company is a start-up or an established company that just needs to transition into or grow the social media side of marketing. After people started noticing how I use my own Instagram for Charleston Weekender, and how it’s attached to my website and blog and included partnerships with other local businesses, they started asking me for tips on how to do the same thing for their products or business. It wasn’t long after I received quite a few requests that I realized that information wasn’t readily available, much less collected into one or even a few good sources where people could gather those tips into a plan that worked for them. That’s when I started offering my “Weekender Workshop.” It started as me just offering consultations for Instagram and grew into a whole workshop offering, simply because there is a great demand for the knowledge and methods, and also because I’m only one person. And she loved my Turkish towels. We got to talking, then we talked some more, and, initially I never wanted or even considered opening a brick and mortar storefront because I figured it was too much for me to handle. Not to mention that’s just not really how I’m wired. I love to go and do things, and the business side, well, I do it because I want to be successful, but it’s just not my favorite thing to sit down and balance all of the different things like bills and schedules and all that. afford the rent, if we can make this work, we’ll give it a try.” We watched the location, and it just kind of kept being there, month after month, almost like it was watching us right back, saying, “Yes, I’m still here, and I’m just the spot you’ve been looking for.” [laughs] We both kept saying it was meant to be. And it was definitely meant to be—when we finally went to see the property, the rent was really reasonable, the lighting was so happy, and the location, like we had always thought, was perfect. Mimi has been a huge source of inspiration and help when it comes to the shop. She’s the perfect partner, which helps owning and running the shop a lot less terrifying than it would have been on my own. I honestly can’t think of a better, more supportive and happy person to partner with to undertake having a shop that locals and tourists alike love to stop in and enjoy.
What products do you provide in Cannonborough Collective and how do you curate those products? Our shop is a balloon & gift shop, and the goods we offer are made up of a collection of over 20 local vendors. We think of the shop as a place the modern tourist can come and find the perfect Charleston souvenir, the local can come by to find a unique gift for a friend, or the bachelorette party can come get all of their décor while enjoying all of the colorful photo opps in our shop. We recently added more food & coffee products, and even carry a local line of cocktail mixers. Our products also include hand made offerings like candles, jewelry, dog collars, and art prints. We also have skincare products that are locally made & CBD oil extracted from locally grown hemp. It’s a collective of so many wonderful other local artisans, most of whom still have a 9-5 while they make their products on the side. Mimi and I started out as “side hustlers” prior to exiting our other careers, so we love get-
ting to support local artisans and their small business dreams! Mimi and I each continue to sell our own products under our own separate brands; Charleston Weekender is a combo of Charleston souvenirs, travel accessories, and home décor items and The Tiny Tassel is a colorful mixture of jewelry, clothing, and party goods. We’ve each been expanding our offerings along the way, and we’re thrilled to have recently expanded to take over the adjoining space in our shop. Let’s talk about your lovely downtown abode. What was your vision for the home and where did you gather the inspiration for the interior? I just love going to boutique hotels, the décor and ambiance and the vibes are so happy. That was kind of what I was thinking about when we moved in and it was time to decorate. I get really bad vacation blues because I travel so often, so I’ve learned over time I either have to give my-
self some time off as soon as I get home, because I just need a day to regroup. It’s a lot of energy when you’re traveling. That was the thought behind the overall interior—I needed a place that I would be happy to come home to and I asked myself, “What if I tried to bring more of that boutique hotel ambiance into my own house where this is a space that I look forward to being?” From there I decided I wanted to make a lot of the house be inspired by different places I’ve visited, or to imbue the vibes of those locales in certain places of the house. For instance, downstairs I was inspired by this summer camp hotel in Martha’s Vineyard that I stayed in. It’s literally like summer camp. I found the Blue Jay wallpaper, which was perfect for the New England style and I added a bug pillow and a lot of other little things. I’ve never even been camping, by the way, but I am fascinated by summer camp because I just think it’s underlying tones are the joy of being outside and childhood and playfulness.

and when I come home I still see the things around the house that remind me of Palm Springs, which makes me happy. I want to make everyday feel like the weekend, too. And that doesn’t happen if I’m being bummed out by a bland house. That’s a big part of what made me decide to concentrate more on making my own space feel like those weekend vibes and travel vibes. Did you decorate the whole interior yourself ? I did have some help from Eliza Linton of Mary Eliza Interiors. I brought a lot of stuff to her and showed her a lot of pictures and she assisted me with the overall design. A big struggle was that this place is totally different than our last house we lived in. I knew it needed a different kind of couch. So she helped me with the layout and figuring out the design for the downstairs. We got a lot of our fixtures from Candelabra and Lyndon Leigh, too. There are just so many aspects to your business, you’re definitely a super woman to manage all of them at once! It also sounds like Charleston Weekender and Cannonborough Collective are growing by leaps and bounds. What are your goals and plans for the future of both? I started thinking about other places I’ve loved exploring, and moved that into the other rooms of the house. The kitchen is inspired by a place called Shop Pigment in San Diego. They have all these plants and all these cool gifts, and such pretty florally vibes. Then I got to thinking, “Ok, every room doesn’t have to be a specific city, because some rooms have some Florida and some California vibes and it’s all melted together. In general, I wanted to put as much of the places I love and have traveled to into my house as I can. I want to feel like I’m still at a boutique hotel when I get home from the boutique hotel. 124 • CH+D • Summer 2019
You have some great, less traditional décor inside your home too, like the chair swing in your living room. How did you know that kind of décor would fit right in with what you already had? A lot of those items, particularly the chair swing, is because I don’t have a porch swing or a huge yard for outdoor styling. I particularly love the chair swing in the living room because, well, I just need a swing. It’s so relaxing. Trying to put pieces of our travels in our house has just made so much sense for me. I go to Palm Springs a few times a year
It’s been such an amazing journey to go from speech therapy to owning a multi-faceted business. My goals are, much like my business, multi-faceted and growing. One of my first goals is to host more events at Cannonborough Collective. I’m also focusing on an online platform for the “Weekender Workshops,” and then hopefully expanding from there. I’d love to get to a point where we’re not just focusing on Instagram growth, but also other aspects of running a business. I certainly don’t have everything figured out, but I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned so far because at the end of the day, I want to be able to make a bigger impact on people, not just to be able to help them, but also to help them more deeply and in more important ways.

(1) Liz selected this Kate Golding "Blue Jay" wallpaper because it reminds her of summer camp. (2) A navy couch with white piping from Celadaon contrasts the white and gold leaf accent wallpaper from Hygge & West Tassels in the lounge room. (3) A round wicker ottoman also serves as storage and is styled with matches and succellents from Cannonborough Collective. (4) Giraffe artwork by local South Carolina artist Megan Carn. (5) The Zahra Peacock chair from Lyndon Leigh adds a touch of whimsy to the master bathroom and is a great place to show off the Turkish towels from Liz's shop. (6) Liz styled the floating shelves in the living room with dramatic pothos and aloe plants from Meeting Green. (7) Liz’s fashion muse, Iris Apfel, overlooks the closet area from her perch, as if to say “More more and less is a bore!” (8) A record player and curated artwork brings a vintage and colorful vibe to the stairwell.

THE INTERIOR DESIGNERS:
Combining their favorite colors and going off of Shannon’s love for boho chic was the driving force between this design trio’s master bedroom creation. The black, white, and green color scheme complements the art that’s thoughtfully hung above the fireplace. The design trio incorporated a diverse set of materials and textures to encourage different layers to shine. Eager to showcase their belief that more is always better, Shannon, Lillian, and Tiffany exhibited a bold ambiance with many layers.

THE INTERIOR DESIGNER:
Bathrooms are places in a home that exude relaxation and assist in creating a spa-like experience for homeowners. That thought led Heidi to setting the stage for a mental repose brimming with little details inspired by the Pantone Color of the Year, “Living Coral.” To instill a spacious vibe in tighter quarters, Heidi focused on maintaining a simple look throughout the design with subtle details in the art, décor, and ceiling treatment. A statement piece was installed in the herringbone marble tile that frames the privacy wall at the shower floor. Heidi was determined to transform the “Ugly Duckling” bathroom into a “Glamorous Swan.”

THE INTERIOR DESIGNER:
Allyson Kirkpatrick-Clark of AllysonK Designs
Antique Japanese screen panels that are mounted on the wall were the driving force for this dining room. The intricately carved chinoiserie images in shades of burnt orange, black, and gold inspired the hand painted wall design, painted in its complementary blue color that allows the blues to pop. The large, formal dining space allows Allyson to be a bit more theatrical in the design, so with that in mind, she wanted to foster a romantic and magical ambiance. Because of the gold in the design, abundance of mirrors, and glossy surfaces, light is reflected and bounced around the room allowing it to almost glow in the dark.

Crafting a cohesive yet unique space between the kitchen and coffee-to-cocktail conversation areas were done with a neutral palette featuring pops of mustard yellow and plentiful greenery. In the kitchen, T. imagined modern, turn of the century details such as the custom Cambria Quartz island, mirrored cabinet doors, and an accent tile ceiling. The cocktail to conversations area features comfortable tufted chairs paired with accent pillows to add interest. A custom art piece above the fireplace anchors the space. Mixing metallic and mirrored elements as well as natural hues helped make T.’s “jewel box” space shine.

Terri Baldwin & Megan Sandefur of CHD Interiors
Marrying a historic and contemporary vibe is a common thread in Charleston and was the inspiration behind the living room design. The living room features collectible items such as a secretary and grandfather clock for historic touches. To play up the natural light popping through the bay windows, Terri and Megan opted for a neutral color on the wall; a tone-ontone of ivory, gray, and gold, a more modern combination. A variety of textures such as wool, linen, velvet, metal, and a cork wallpaper paired with drapes hung from the crown molding to accent the tall ceilings draws the viewer’s eye to something intriguing at every turn.

With a goal of capturing aspects of Charleston that everyone loves, Sandra embarked on a design journey inspired by a F. Schumacher blue fabric called “Quail and Meadow.” Since the fabric had integrated a traditional motif in a modern color palette, Sandra was prompted to carry that theme throughout the design. Sandra selected a mix of vintage and contemporary artwork to lend a hand in depicting a Charlestonesque concept. Southern roots shine through in the monogram and equestrian art piece. The natural light that the room rendered allowed for each design element to stand-out and showcase the beauty of the architecture.

Inspiring homeowners through a warm and welcoming entrance was what led Linda to brainstorm this garden. Charleston has a historic landscape and Linda wanted to unite that idea with a modern twist. This was done by incorporating evergreens and ornamental plant materials including Italian cypress, tea olives, azaleas, boxwoods, and more. To elevate the entryway, Linda selected ligustrum topiaries that line the left of the front entry stairs, which add a vertical aspect enhanced by dwarf mondo grass and annuals for extra color. Another focal point that Linda included was the coral bark Japanese maple that complemented the color of the house’s trim.

The Swiss Family Robinson book was one of Meredith’s favorite as a child and now the movie has been on repeat at her house. To Meredith, the third floor of the house felt like a treehouse so that’s the feeling she wanted to elicit in the playroom. As a firm believer that designs for children should be rich with texture and elements people of all ages can enjoy, Meredith scouted for the Scalamandre fishing creel teepee and the antique steamer trunk set. Another stand-out element is the fort that was built into the existing closet. She also selected custom antelope rug from Fine Rugs of Charleston and window seat cushions from Southern Shades. Creating an elegant and fun space for children was Meredith’s driving force.

Finding quiet time and joy in the studio is one of the simple pleasures in an artist’s life. Inspired by art studios she’s seen in Paris, Cecilia wanted to recreate a working space that was filled with objects with reflective surfaces. Transforming the studio, that used to be an extra bedroom, was done by handpicking a vintage mirror with an ornate gold leaf frame paired with antique glass finishes in sconces and lamps from Circa Lighting. Adding smaller artwork and other artisan works on the shelves carried on the antique Parisian art studio ambiance that Cecilia was aiming for.

2019 DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE THE SPACE:
THE INTERIOR DESIGNER:
Terry Stephenson of Juxtaposition Home & Garden, LLC
Inspired by Monet’s home and garden in Giverny, France, Terry strived to present a French impressionistic interior in the sitting room. An asymmetric space required Terry to think outside of the box to come up with the perfect balance and harmony in the area. To achieve that balance, the focus was drawn away from the fireplace and instead on the other side of the room in the 19th century French canopy daybed. The small, intimate space of the sitting room allowed Terry to play up the built-in design elements including the fireplace, bookcases, and french doors that opened onto the piazza.

With three stories of space to decorate, Audrey used a combination of rustic elements and local artwork to take advantage of the ample wall space that the foyers, hallways, and landing offered. To achieve a stylish yet lived-in vibe, Audrey selected a variety of furnishing, artwork, and accessories paired with a “greige” paint color and porcelain lamps and gilt chandeliers. Adding depth to the space was accomplished by accessorizing with wall brackets to showcase a variety of decorative items and hanging a large mirror in the main hallway.

THE INTERIOR DESIGNER:
Wanting to break from the stereotypical “man cave,” Molly embarked on the journey to concoct a ladies sitting room; that idea evolved and the space become a sitting/reading room/ library. Since this space was on the third floor in a more attic-esque area, Molly painted the walls a light pink color to help make the low ceilings and slanted walls feel a bit more spacious. Rather than ample art work on the walls, Molly added interest in the table décor with books and other accessories. The space unfolded into a dynamic nook that invited people to sit and enjoy a good book.

Because the house had rust colored shutters and trim, Margaret Lee and Amandra drew from those hues for the piazza. Choosing neutral furniture and keeping the layout simple allowed the piazza to feel more open and inviting. While many homeowners often think of outdoor areas last, Margaret Lee and Amandra wanted to set the tone that these spaces are an extension of living spaces. The duo wanted the space to encourage people to gather and enjoy Charleston. Since pollen is very visible in the springtime, the ladies chose items that would withstand Mother Nature; washable rugs and a performance fabric sofa.

The French garden furniture continues the French impressionistic theme of the sitting room, maintaining a cohesive look throughout the two spaces.

THE INTERIOR DESIGNER:
Shannon Bogan The theme of rusts, browns, greens, and black were continued in this piazza off of the master bedroom. Shannon maintained a consistent design throughout her spaces accenting more neutral pieces like these outdoor chairs with fun accessories such as the patterned pillows and intricately designed side table. The greenery that Shannon chose only adds to the natural vibe of this piazza.
THE INTERIOR DESIGNER:
Sandra Ericksen
of Sandra Ericksen Design Sandra opted to keep her piazza space simple and to remain consistent in the bright colors used in the guest room. A bright green patterned chair anchors the space that is accented with a sculpted boxwood. The simplicity of the design and bright colors allow the rust color of the floor and railing trim to pop.

RUSH DIXON ARCHITECTS A C H AT W I T H R U S H & J U D Y D I X O N
What were the homeowner’s requests for this home and how did you fulfill those requests? The design of this residence began as a collaboration between Alka Construction and Rush Dixon Architects to continue the Fulton Neighborhood’s “unique modern living” approach to the built environment. We appreciate what Alka has created in this neighborhood and our collective goal was to create a “Lowcountry-modern” aesthetic that responds to the site. Prior to the commencement of construction the Langstons purchased the property; we were then able to customize the design to their priorities and preferences. Which special design ideas did you bring to this project? We designed the house to have functional and easy spaces to live in, that can work equally well for entertaining, family time or solitude. What is your favorite design feature of this home? Our favorite design moment is the custom wood scrim wall which not only separates the entry from the Dining Room but displays artifacts from the Langstons many travels. We measured each of these special pieces and created several iterations of the wall detail until we landed on the best version. How does the home interact with its natural surroundings? The site borders on beautiful wooded wetlands which we wanted to embrace as a natural backdrop and short view. The main entrance is centered on the dining room and living room which creates a view corridor through large full glass sliding doors to the woodlands. The master bedroom is another beneficiary of the wooded view. Photography by Ebony Ellis

Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
The properties in Fulton are intentionally modest in size which creates a rich density similar to the courtyard living of neo-traditional neighborhoods. This creates a challenge when laying out the house and exterior living spaces as the goal is to create privacy and functionality. The solution included nestling the master wing toward the rear corner of the site.

ANDERSON STUDIO OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN A C H AT W I T H S C O T T A N D E R S O N
What were the homeowner’s requests for this home and how did you fulfill those requests? The owners live in the Midwest and have roots in Brooklyn. They searched for a Kiawah location that gave them easy access to water and marvelous views. They recognized they had a small lot and had a few requests: enough bedrooms and fun to lure their college age children to Kiawah, an open living entertaining arrangement, seamless indoor-outdoor living, and a Brooklyn-inspired stoop. Which special design ideas did you bring to this project? The exterior design solution is unabashedly different from its location. The exterior is intended to subtly tie the home to its location with its materials. The top floor is intended to be as transparent as possible, to make it as visually light as possible, while still providing protection with roof overhangs. What is your favorite design feature of this home? We especially love the unexpected experience created by the second floor bunk room. We needed a room that was both for sleeping and enjoyment. We designed a steel and glass wall that allowed natural light from across the hall to spill into the bunk room even when the curtains are closed.

How does the home interact with its natural surroundings? The exterior design solution is unabashedly different from its location (vertical, compact, and efficient due to its small pieshaped lot). The exterior is intended to subtly tie the home to its location with its materials (wood shingles, cedar tongue-and-groove siding, and Cedar columns). The top floor is intended to be as transparent as possible, to make it as visually light as possible, while still providing protection with roof overhangs. Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? We’d like to thank Epic Development, Glen Gardner Landscape Architect, John Griffiths Hardwood Flooring, Audio Warehouse, Henselstone Window and Door Systems, Ferguson Enterprises, Aqua Blue Pools, Hostetler Cabinetry, and Vitoria International.
Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
The challenge was to design a home on a smaller-sized lot. The solution was to go vertical with a traditional layout: living on the first floor and primary bedrooms on the second. We created a rooftop terrace with fire pit, a cocktail bar, and librarylike glass hall on the third floor.

LFA ARCHITECTURE A C H A T W I T H L A U R A F. A L T M A N
What were the homeowner’s requests for this home and how did you fulfill those requests? The homeowner wanted to expand the living spaces at the first and second floors in a way that benefited from and enhanced the courtyard, while maintaining privacy. At the first floor, we added to and reoriented the kitchen, relocated the mechanical closet, and utilized a wall of windows to create a bright indoor-outdoor space for cooking and entertaining. The existing garden walls and the babble of the new fountain provide a feeling of seclusion in the midst of a busy neighborhood. Which special design ideas did you bring to this project? The homeowner envisioned a bay window at the master bedroom, to create an indoor-outdoor desk workspace. Through many design iterations and discussions, we devised a bay of French Dutch doors. These doors match the French doors from the bedroom to the porch, with a pair at the south side of the bay and singles on the two short sides. What is your favorite design feature of this home? I was excited about how all the finishes came together in a cohesive manner. Exposed brick, dark gray slate, and river reclaimed cypress were repeated throughout the house, in different ways. This combination of materials gives a timeless warmth to the house. How does the home interact with its natural surroundings? The courtyard is small, but its presence is powerful. By using Kolbe Vistaluxe doors the line between inside and outside blurs.

Baker, Burrow Hill, interior designer Trudie Krawcheck, and Southeastern Galleries.
Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
Although the kitchen was expanded, there was little wall space for the working area of the kitchen. We utilized small appliances to maximize the space. The cabinets were designed to be very functional and incorporated items such as a stacked utensil tray and a corner cabinet pull-out. The countertops and backsplash feature Labradorite Extra Blue granite.

CAMENS ARCHITECTURAL GROUP A C H AT W I T H M A R C C A M E N S
What were the homeowner’s requests for this home and how did you fulfill those requests? They wanted the house to have a Tuscan feel, but we had to merge that style with what we were allowed to design according to Kiawah Island’s codes. What we came up with was a meld of Tuscany and the Kiawah Island vibes. There is a beautiful courtyard in the center of the design with an openness that imbues Italy. We selected big inset windows and made the walls thicker to emulate the stones that are a huge feature of Tuscan architecture. Which special design ideas did you bring to this project? The way we integrated the courtyard with the secondstory bridge across the courtyard with a porch swing is my favorite feature. We also allowed a lot of light to flood the home. The entry of the house is also built around a huge Live Oak, which we had to work around. What is your favorite design feature of this home? The internal courtyard and the way that the other spaces in the home relate to each other is key in this design. In combination with the bridge that creates the U-shape, it’s all very cozy and intimate without being small.

How does the home interact with its natural surroundings? The views from the house, and from the courtyard are spectacular, so we used a lot of glass for those spaces. Rather than a deck, we created a bridge that frames the courtyard, the pool, and the marshes beyond. Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? RM Buck Builders did a fantastic job building the home that we designed. All of the other contributors, the trim carpenters, painters, and everyone else really gave the ultimate finish and energy to the house.
Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
The biggest challenge was the Live Oak in the middle of the lot that we were not allowed to cut. So planning around that tree, or in a u-shape, the tree pushed the house back, and we wanted the courtyard in the back, so we had to work around all of that. By facing that challenge, we took it and made it the most stunning feature.

It was important to my family to have a place where we could retreat from the long work days, but also a home that we could downsize, but still have room when the kids and grandkids come to visit. What special design ideas did you bring to this project? We wanted a comfortable and relaxed place to live that was smaller than our previous home, but that met all the requirements of an open living space, and entertaining that linked to the outdoors and was connected visually. We were planning for “cozy,” and as the architect, I was able to design exactly what we envisioned. What is your favorite design feature of this home? The degree of openness that also allows separate definition of each space is my favorite aspect of the home. The linking of outdoor and indoor living spaces separated by the kitchen, all of which has tremendous views of the 18 hole golf course including a sneak peek of Charleston Harbor.

How does this home interract with its natural surroundings? The house was designed to fit on a relatively narrow lot from front to back. The front is flanked by a pond while the rear is bound by a golf course. To make things a bit more challenging, there are grand trees on the property which had to be avoided. So, the home is nestled in the trees with front porch sitting enjoying the pond while back porch relaxing enjoys long range views over the expansive golf course. Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? While I was the architect and general contractor for the home, I had some great subcontractors in Sanchez Masonry, Randy Clark Framing and Exterior Trim, Scientific Environmental Design, Cahill Roofing, Muhler Company, Buck Lumber & Building Supply, Overhead Door Company, and Melcer Tile.
Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
The site was located at the end of a cul-de-sac and was a rather narrow front-to-back. The maintenance shed flanked one side of the property and the neighborhood retention pond flanked the front. Several Grand Live Oaks also restricted the footprint.

What were the homeowner’s requests for this home and how did you fulfill those requests? The homeowner’s line of work requires him to test boats. He requested the ability to trailer boats onto the property and into the water. So, I designed a porte cochère that allowed him to trailer the boats down. It also doubles as an additional place to park a car. Which special design ideas did you bring to this project? The views are amazing and the homeowners entertain a lot outdoors. I wanted to provide the homeowners with a “Grand Porch” for cooking, eating and gathering but did not want to obstruct the views from inside. I designed a porch off to the side of the living space. This provided the porte cochere below as well. The porches directly off of the living space are 10 feet deep for minimal furniture, ability to circulate to and from the pool and the Grand Porch. What is your favorite design feature of this home? I have a lot of favorites, but one of the most unique features about this home is the circular staircase that ascends four floors.

How does this home interract with its natural surroundings? The lot size dictated that the home should have an elevated foundation to allow room for the garage. A negative element of elevated homes are they tend to get disconnected from the natural surroundings. I used the pool to reconnect the distance between the main level and ground by placing the pool halfway between the two. I also integrated planters at this mid-level to bring green closer. The elevated pool appears to cascade into the Wando River with the infinity edge that is enjoyed from both sides of the pool. The color of the pool is key to naturally blend with the water beyond. Are there any subcontractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? We would like to thank Southeastern Custom Homes and Melcer Tile.
Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
The lot is spectacular, but it is only 70’ wide. I wanted to maximize the views on the water. In addition to placing the master suite upstairs to enjoy the views, we created a 3rd level in the roofline that serves as a Bonus Room and the VIP Guest Suite. This special space has a small covered, Juliette balcony that has some of the best views of the home.

What were the homeowner’s requests for this home and how did you fulfill those requests? The existing home was the client’s childhood home. She wanted to recreate her memories of an ideallic childhood and her home being the place where everyone wanted to be. The area where the small breezeway was is now a spacious and inviting great room, where the living room serves as the connector between the old and the new, the interior and the exterior. The warmth of the existing home is echoed with the reuse and matching of existing materials. Which special design ideas did you bring to this project? We harnessed the energy of the kitchen/breezeway as the heart of the home. Purposeful placement of windows and circulation optimized the flow from the existing home to the addition and from the interior to the exterior. What is your favorite design feature of this home? My favorite design feature of the home is the conglomeration of many details in the great room that make it the place where everyone wants to be. How does the home interact with its natural surroundings? The great room serves as an axis that connects the indoors to the outdoors, anchored by a view of the harbor on one side and a view of the azalea garden on the other side. The deck off of the living room serves as a transition from the interior living room to the exterior living room. Windows are purposely positioned to visually connect the interior to the natural surroundings. Photography by Callie Cranford

Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? George Bunch of Local Building Partners did a stellar job of taking the project from paper to completion. He was integral in the design development process, so that we could closely monitor how design decisions were steering the budget. The client was able to make informed decisions based on this feedback. George also has a great eye for detailing and really helped fine-tune the design.
Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
The biggest challenge of this project was to work the design around the flood zone elevation height requirement. It took working closely with the building department to find an aspect of the code which allowed for the living room floor to be level with the kitchen floor while the rest of the addition was raised to the new flood zone floor height requirements.

What were the homeowner’s requests for this home and how did you fulfill those requests? The home was reaching the age where it needed an update. The entire exterior was replaced, including all of the siding, trim, railing, decking, windows, and doors. On the interior, the bathrooms and kitchen were all updated including complete renovations of the master bathroom, powder room and kitchen. The homeowners also wanted to open up the first floor where all of the living spaces are. We were able to reorganize the first floor so that these areas all communicate well with each other. What special design ideas did you bring to this project? The homeowners wanted to open up the first floor, which included all of the living spaces in the home. We were able to reorganize the first floor layout so that all of these area communicate well with each other, improving upon the previous layout of individual, separated rooms. What is your favorite design feature of this home? I particularly enjoyed working with the homeowners on designing the ironwork features that are showcased at the entry landing. They add a style and flair to the home that is unique to the homeowners and the structure itself. How does the home interact with its natural surroundings? All of the changes were made to the existing home, meaning we didn’t make changes to any of the exterior footprint, landscaping or hardscaping.

Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? Renaissance South Construction Co performed the work on this project and they were very thorough throughout each step of the process.
Why was it important for these homeowners to work with an architect?
The biggest design challenge of this project was how to open up the main level while still maintaining privacy for the powder room. By splitting the lower section of stair in two directions, we were able to create a more private hall adjacent to the entry which provides ample privacy for the powder room from the otherwise open floor.

Introducing dormers on the main mass helped mimic the scale of the guest wing. The rafter bearing on the wing is set so that the second floor is able to live within the “attic” space, maximizing the floor space, but minimizing its scale.

There are lots of options for homeowners to help deter pests from their spaces. A pest-repelling system can be very low maintenance and customized to spray your home’s areas on a schedule at the the touch of a button. Working with a regularly scheduled service is a great option too, as each visit is tailored to the specific areas of your property where certain pests love to linger. ______________________________________ For Mor e In for m at ion :

ver the past three years, the Lowcountry has been directly threatened by three named storms, which has prompted the majority of homeowners to evacuate their homes. Charleston Home + Design magazine has put together a guide of professional advice to help make this year the year that your evacuation plans give you a peace of mind, rather than a dark cloud of worry. The Eye of the Storm Hurricanes Matthew (2016), Irma (2017), and Florence (2018) may not have hit land as a category four or five, as compared to Hugo, but they caused billions of dollars in damage to homes across the Lowcountry. Hurricane 101 Hurricanes are scaled between one to five, and just a category one 242 • CH+D • Summer 2019
hurricane can produce wind levels of 74-95 miles per hour, which can easily tear more than just shingles from a home. Add just a little more power to those winds, (anywhere between 111-129 miles per hour, which is considered a category three) and even a well-constructed home could lose its roof. Attention: Imminent Danger There are four levels of the hurricane advisory system that are key to remember. First is the “Outlook” level, which is announced if hazardous weather is possible within the week. The “Advisory” level is declared if a storm or hydrologic event is imminent or occurring. A hurricane “Watch” is issued when the risk of the danger of the storm has increased significantly. Lastly, the “Warning” level is set into effect if a hurricane is imminent or occurring and also carries a threat to life.

ARE YOU
WINDOWS “We love Anderson products with Stormwatch® protection because they are designed and tested to meet tough building code requirements, specifically for coastal areas. They offer energyefficient protection and design flexibility. Not only do they provide hidden structural reinforcements and impact-resistant glass, they’re also available in a myriad of interior and exterior finishes for customizable options.”
ROB CR AWFORD Buck Lumber & Building Supply
“We provide double-hung windows that are created to meet coastal environment building codes, which are among the most stringent codes in the whole industry. These high performance windows can be used in new construction settings or as replacement options for current homeowners looking to update their hurricane preparation methods.”

ROOFING “On average, a standing seam metal roof will cost at least 3 times more than a shingle reroof. But while metal roofs are more costly, they last significantly longer. A shingle roof is expected to last 10-15 years compared to a metal roof that could last up to 30 years. Plus, with regular inspections and minimal reinforcement, a metal roof is significantly more likely to withstand a serious hurricane or storm. Nearly all metal roofs are installed with overlapping seams between the metal panels, and it’s this overlapping area of the roof that gives your home double protection from panels being blown away by the wind.”
PETER JOHNSTON Baker Roofing
“If a homeowner is looking for protection, ease of use, and style when it comes to shutters, we often recommend Bahama shutters. Not only do they emulate the Lowcountry’s classic coastal style, but they are great for permanent protection from hurricanes. These louvered shutters attach directly above the windows and can be easily lowered and secured into place for storm protection by one person.
BRYAN CURRIE Holy City Shutter Company
“Roll-down shutters are some of our personal favorite types of shutters, because they’re the easiest hurricane shutters to operate. They’re known across the industry as some of the strongest, most durable, and most effective hurricane shutters available. Plus, they can be set up to be automated, which means with just a touch of a button, the shutters deploy to cover windows and doors with minimal effort on the homeowner. And they work for more than just windows and doors—they’re great for patios, balconies, porches, and second story openings, too.”
CHUCK ALTSCHUL Lowcountry Hurricane Protection & Shutters
Universal Windows Direct
“When it comes to prepping for a storm, we highly recommend making it so that your home has a turnkey package. That means installing impact-rated windows and doors so that, as a homeowner, all you really have to do is make sure everything is shut and locked so that the impact-rated windows and doors can protect your home while you’re away or sheltered inside.”
“Besides being extremely durable, weather resistant, and completely waterproof, rubber roofing is also very resistant to thermal shock. If installed properly, rubber roofing shouldn’t crack or become brittle due to hot or cold temperatures. It’s able to withstand extreme weather conditions between a hail event and hurricane-level winds. Not to mention it’s very low maintenance and any repairs that are required can almost always be fixed quickly and easily.”

“We have a lot of homeowners tell us after a hurricane that they had no trouble or damage to their metal roof, since these types of roofing options excel in sloughing off heavy snows, rains, and high winds. Because the materials are lighter weight than traditional shingle roofs, they can be installed over existing roofs, if necessary. They can also be noisy during rainstorms, though most people enjoy the sound of rain on the rooftop.” CHRIS HARPER Harper Construction

“When a hurricane is about to hit, you want to be able to put up your protection and get you and your family out of town to safety. Our favorite product that helps homeowners do just that is Storm Trim Hurricane Fabric, because it’s a great and less expensive alternative to plywood. It’s quick and easy to install. And since Muhler owns the patent on this type of protection, our professionals install it the right way so that it doesn’t penetrate the waterproofing membrane around a window or a door, unlike other hurricane protective panel anchoring methods. And, unlike plywood, second story openings are easy.”
DARREN NIMCHUK Muhler
SIDING
“Though they can be a bit more expensive than traditional garage doors, wind-rated garage doors are great for the Lowcountry’s yearly hurricane threat. Every CHI Overhead door is wind-tested up to 130 mph, which can withstand up to a category 4 hurricane. Installing a windrated garage door on your home helps protect the envelope of your home during a hurricane, which a major step toward whole-home protection.”
ROBERT GATCH All About Garage Doors
“There are pretty significant insurance breaks on installing an impact-rated or impact glass rated door. All of our products are wind-tested up to 140mph, and it’s also important to consider impact resistance at that level, since hurricanes almost always include flying debris. Whether a homeowner is installing a door on a new home or replacing an old one, it’s vital to weigh their options and do the research to find the right garage door that will protect their home.”
MIKE CARDARELLE Overhead Garage Doors
“A garage door is the largest opening in a home, so it stands to reason that they can often be the weakest link when it comes to withstanding a hurricane. All of our doors are rated to withstand 147 mph winds and are built to meet code across the Charleston area. We offer custom engineered solutions as well for higher rated areas like Folly Beach at 150 mph up to 175 mph or impact rated for special cases. Staying within these code guidelines allows Precision to pass along beneficial insurance breaks to our customers when impact rated doors are installed."

GARAGE DOORS
“We highly recommend NuCedar PVC siding for homeowners to consider when it comes to armoring the largest part of their home’s exterior for the hurricane season. A complete cladding system includes siding and trim work, all made from PVC material that withstand mold, rot, heat, and the corrosive, salty atmosphere of the Lowcountry. Plus, because the PVC is flexible in nature, it’s great for protecting the exterior walls of a home from flying debris during a hurricane event, and it comes in lots of customizable options for nearly every style.”
RUSSELL FOGG Garden State Lumber
“James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding is a great choice for Charleston homeowners who are in the market for a strong siding option. It’s resistant to rotting, warping, cracking, and pests. This type of siding provides homeowners in coastal environments maximum protection against some of the strongest storm events. Fiber cement is impervious to moisture, can withstand winds of 130 mph, and will not warp. In addition, they come with the highest fire rating in the siding industry today, which means your family can sleep well at night. ”
NICOLE SCHULT Z Contract Exteriors
“Hurricanes are especially dangerous for homeowners because they not only strike with dangerous, high winds, but they also bring with them major water threats to a home in the form of rains and floods. Water can damage your home like nothing else. So even after the storm abates, HardiePlank Lap Siding is a great product for Lowcountry homeowners because its a sturdy, lap siding fiber cement option for exterior protection that is impervious to swelling or cracking. It also provides a classic look while providing the strength of fiber cement.”
ROBERT PRITCHER
INSULATION “Spray foam insulation is better able to control moisture movement than most other types of insulation, which makes it a great option for Lowcountry homeowners dealing with constant humidity and yearly storms. Plus, because of the application process, in which the spray foam insulation fills in tiny gaps and crevices, it not only creates an air seal on your home, it also strengthens your walls by taking them from hollow to solid. This is why our favorite type of spray foam insulation is closed cell spray foam.”
NIKI DUBE Energy One America
GENERATORS "Be sure to hire a professional to assess not only your load needs but also the logistics of installing a generator in your home. We highly recommend Generac Generators for safety and reliability when it comes to having a backup source for your home’s power.”

Setting the Stage at the 2019 Daniel Island Luxury Home Tour
W
hen Cy Goforth of Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes decided to open his home to the 2019 Daniel Island Luxury Home Tour, he had a few spaces that he wanted to have staged. He called upon the team at Southeastern Galleries to help arrange the rooms for home tour attendees to enjoy. Southeastern Galleries brought in their designers to select pieces for the guest bedroom, master bedroom, and dining room. The team came together and chose coastal furnishings to top off the design.
248 • CH+D • Summer 2019
In the guest bedroom they worked with textures like a fabric-front dresser. Matching navy grass cloth textured dressers were added to the master bedroom. A semi-circle reading nook in the master suite created a cozy spot for a set of neutral chairs and a leather accent ottomon. With the help from Southeastern Galleries, home tour attendees were able to see a completed coastal home to draw inspiration from for their own dwellings. For more information, call Southeastern Galleries at (843) 556-4663 or visit southeasterngalleries.com.
