I
t’s been quite a few years (but I’m not counting anymore) since I’ve made the iconic fall transition from free-spirited summer rascal to busy, organized youngster who was focused on getting into the routine of classes, extracurricular activities, and a fun new fall wardrobe. This season of new beginnings still fills me with excitement, though, even after those many years of returning to school, seeing old friends nearly every day, making new ones, and filling my head with as much knowledge as possible. Fall is always a great reminder that transformations take place anywhere and everywhere and that it’s never too late to make a change.

The Craftsmanship of Custom Bed Swings Martin Shuler, of The Bed Swing, provides Lowcountry homeowners a stylish way to relax on their porches all year round.
What led you to establishing The Bed Swing? Did you always have an entrepreneurial mindset? Growing up, my family would vacation at Edisto Beach where we always anticipated seeing one particular rickety bed swing that hung from an oak tree just before getting to the island. As I grew older and vacationed in the Caribbean, I started seeing larger versions of bed swings and loved the comforting feeling they provided as you swayed back and forth. In more recent years, I started seeing them locally and the design was a bit more elaborate than typical porch swings I’d previously viewed. I knew I could build them, so I made some for friends in a few different styles. From there, my entrepreneurial spirit led me to open The Bed Swing.
What experience can homeowners expect when working with The Bed Swing? We are committed to providing the best design in craftsmanship of our bed swings and with the outdoor fabrics we use. We start with collecting style and design ideas from 62 • CH+D • Fall 2019
the customer and then offer suggestions for color and fabric. This helps them create the perfect look for their bed swing.
How do you customize each bed swing that you make? When we customize a bed swing, we want to make sure that it fits perfectly in the space. We can tweak our different design options or create a completely new style for the customer. The result is a furniture grade bed swing that is truly one of a kind.
What is important for homeowners to know when they come to you wanting a custom bed swing? We pride ourselves on creating high quality, long-lasting structural frames. We use mortise and tenon type joinery versus screws. Ultimately, we want the overall look to be stunning and that is why we go to great lengths to help select the right fabrics to complement our bed swings. Amish-Made Home Items Matt and Beth Troyer of Charleston Amish Furniture share some of their favorite décor pieces sold in their store.
He Said: Matt Said: The dining table. Memories of my childhood around the dining table are priceless. We laughed and talked, discussing various things we did throughout the day. A strong heritage and great values were passed down around my old table.
Matt Said: I love furnishing a dining room. As with all the furniture in our store, the tables are solid wood. All of the timber comes from West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. All of the work is done in small, family-owned Amish shops.
Matt Said: I really like using our Edison indoor/outdoor string lights in various areas around the home. They are easy to use, and they have a charming, almost historical, feel that I love to see.
She Said: Favorite Piece of Furniture?

Beth Said: The sofa is my favorite. I prefer reclining sofas, as they offer ease and comfort while enjoying a book or conversation. Switching out pillows or throws to spice up the sofa with a fresh splash of color offers versatility.
Beth Said: I find the place with the most creativity for decorating is the living room. An important detail is working with colors that will draw one’s eye to harmonious hues throughout the room. I focus on design that offers a warm, relaxing feel.
Beth Said: Table lamps are my favorite as they offer a warm, inviting glow to any room. A well-chosen lamp can make a beautiful fashion statement for any space. New creative shades added to existing lamps give the room a fun, easy change.

The Kramer Family

Landscape Architect’s J.R. and Holly Kramer of REMARK Landscape Architecture have been bringing Lowcountry homeowner’s landscape dreams to life for over 10 years. More recently, the couple has cultivated a luscious retreat at their residence for their family and friends to enjoy.
1 For the Kramer’s front yard, they selected native grasses like Silver Love Grass, Cloud Nine Switch Grass, and Sweetgrass. These grasses are suited for the bright sun their front yard receives.
2 Their home plan from
Master Home Builder was modified to incorporate a triple slider on the back porch. The back courtyard offers a private yard with lush, native plantings that bring new changes to the garden each season.
3 Corten retaining walls,
supplied by Border Concepts and fabricated by Pirates Forge, are paired with steel fencing to create a level patio. The patio planters are filled with Dwarf Papyrus, a Banana Tree, and Plumbago which are all non-invasive plants.
4 In the side yard, a stylized
meadow with native grasses flourished with Coneflower, Black-Eyed Susans, Swamp Hibiscus, and other perennials. The goal was to get coverage within the first growing season to reduce weed growth.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON
One-of-a-Kind Wood Work Isaac Moyer makes custom wood tables and home décor items from local tree stumps. The Craftsman:
Isaac Moyer of Moyer Woodworking has enjoyed hand-crafting wood items for many years. A few years ago, he decided that it was time to start creating custom wood pieces as a full-time job.
The Craft:
Locally sourced, fallen, and uprooted trees provide the materials for Isaac’s work. Once he gets the trees into his shop, Isaac creates tables, hand-carved bowls, mantels, and home décor items.
His Backstory:
Isaac was in college when he discovered his passion for woodworking. After hand-making gifts for his family, he fell in love with the process. The idea that he could come up with a design, source the materials, and create something unique that would last forever was very appealing to Isaac.
His Process:

Finding the locally sourced wood is the starting point of Isaac’s process. In his shop, Isaac mills the logs into slabs using a chainsaw. He repurposes the roots to make tables. Isaac then cleans and polishes them. Debarking is also a part of his cleanup process. Clients are able to come to Isaac’s shop and search through his collection to select the piece that speaks to them.
His Philosophy:
The idea of finding pieces of wood, whether that be logs, roots, or random pieces of wood, in places where they would have otherwise just rotted, and being able to capture that into a physical product is the driving force behind Isaac’s business. Rather than purchasing the lumber, Isaac strives to repurpose the forgotten trees and tell the story of each piece of wood. Inside the Insulation

Garages are the main entry point of the home. They have the largest doors which allow more air to leak than homeowners may realize. Rest assured, there are simple ways to combat this leak. Thermacore insulated garage doors have the ability to reduce air leaks in the garage, while providing a temperature transition from the outdoors to indoors. This insulated
door is two inches thick with a gel-foam inside that has no air gaps and creates a better seal against the air moving through the metal doors. Key Flooring Terms to Add to Your Homeowner Dictionary We’ve rounded up the most crucial jargon you need to know when it comes to flooring.
Cupping:
This occurs when the edges of a board are higher than its center. Cupping can occur due to excessive moisture which causes the wood flooring to swell, crushing the boards together and buckles or warps them at the edges.
Substrate:
Substrate, also known as subfloors, are the surfaces on which floor coverings, like hardwood, laminate, or tile lay. The substrate can be wood, concrete, plywood, stone or metal, and for any of the materials you might choose for flooring, there are preparation considerations that must be adhered to maintain the integrity of the flooring material.
Engineered Hardwood:
An engineered wood floor is constructed of layers of both hardwood and plywood, where the hardwood layer sits atop the plywood layer, typically on a slab foundation. Each layer is positioned in a different direction. This construction prevents the engineered hardwood from warping and bowing in moist areas. Engineered hardwood offers easy care and maintenance. 80 • CH+D • Fall 2019
Floating Floor:
Today’s industry provides hardwood and laminate options for floating floors, which are not attached to the subfloor. This is an installation method where the boards of the floor are pre-finished and designed to “snap” together so that you don’t have to nail each piece down.
AC Rating:
An Abrasion Class, or AC Rating, is the system by which different flooring options are labeled AC1 through AC5. AC1 through AC3 are ideal for residential uses. AC1 is suggested for home use with minimal traffic, like bedrooms or closets, whereas AC3 is recommended for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and entryways.
Stain-Resistant Porcelain:
Porcelain tile flooring is a durable man-made material that is impervious to spills, unlike hardwoods and natural stones. Consider this selection for high-traffic areas and to be safe, pick a grout color a shade or two darker than you generally think you want to hide potential stains.

What are some of the most unique features of this abode? This home has so many amazing details, it’s hard to pinpoint just a few. The infinity edge raised pool in the rear of the home is always a favorite. The outdoor living space with the exterior kitchen and fireplace is my personal favorite spot in the home. Plus the views of the marsh and creek are as far as the eye can see, which are phenomenal at any time of day.
Did the homeowners have any special requests for the design of this home? They wanted a cross between Lowcountry elegance and Cape Cod style. I think together we absolutely achieved that with the blend of shakes and siding on the exterior of the home, especially with all of the large New England style windows and perfect shade of blue for the paint. They also wanted to make sure the elevated pool was level with the first floor so they could simply walk out of the back of the house and into the pool.

Starting from a young age, Liz knew that she had a passion for architecture. With a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Design from Clemson University, Liz possesses a meticulous attention to detail that allows her to bring every element that a homeowner desires to life. Liz’s passion for her craft also led her to becoming a member of the American Institute of Architects.
What were the homeowner’s design goals and how did you achieve those goals? The owners wanted a coastal cottage with an efficient floor plan. It needed to live well when it is just the two of them as well as while entertaining, on a regular basis. With retirement in mind, we were mindful of downsizing, but still provided them with the comfortable size rooms.
Where there any challenges that you had to overcome throughout this process? Typically, cottages have a larger main level footprint than the upper level. This is because the upper level is within the roofline. It creates wonderfully sloped ceilings, however, while designing the upper level, it requires additional time to calculate wall and ceiling heights.
How did you collaborate with the homeowners to meet their expectations? We met regularly to review and tweak the plans. Ryan Butler, the owner of SHELTER Custom-Built Living, was also at a majority of the meetings along with his team members on occasion. We were able to treat this home like a design-build and there were no last-minute changes in the end due to budget or builder input. Every detail was integrated along the way. Both Amandra and Margaret Lee come from families with a background in design and construction. After meeting at The Art Institute of Charleston, and immediately bonding over their shared passion for design, they knew they would one day partner up and start their own firm.
Where did the design inspiration come from for this home? The homeowners wanted a bright and family-friendly beach retreat. We took hues from the new recycled glass kitchen countertops the client had selected and incorporated its greens and blues throughout the space.
What did the process look like from consultation to installation? This project actually began as a simple color consult. The client reached out for help during the middle of a kitchen renovation that was not going according to plan. The cabinets had not been installed correctly and the stove did not fit. After meeting with them, the client asked us to help them with the rest of their remodel. We helped them finish their kitchen and guided them through the successful remodel of both bathrooms. We were also able to help them purchase new furniture throughout the space.
What kind of technology did you use to show your ideas to the homeowners? We use AutoCAD to draw up both floor plans and elevations for our clients and contractors. We also used a program called MyDoma that allows us to share products, inspirational images, and mood boards online with our clients. This is extremely helpful because many of our clients live out of town; being able to clearly communicate our ideas with them remotely is important. 5:00am Tricia is an early bird, so she starts her day with sunrise, coffee, and caring for Island House Real Estate’s social media accounts by replying to any questions and messages they may have received overnight. It’s vital to their business model to communicate with anyone who may reach out to them for information, since buying a home is an extremely complicated process.
7:30am At this point, Tricia, Angie, Keri, and Lindsay have all begun working from their homes and are scheduling

It’s time for the first client appointment of the day. Today, they are showing new clients several homes so that they can get a feel for neighborhoods they are considering. When Tricia, Angie, Keri, or Lindsay tour a home with a client, they provide all essential facts and figures for their clients to appraise before making any decisions.
Island House Real Estate educates their clients about the different areas of Charleston. One of the team’s favorite offerings are the community tours, which include a variety of local sights and historic neighborhoods. They put these together for potential homeowners who are new to Charleston.
2:00pm More client meetings are scheduled for after lunch. One meeting is to help potential homeowners with pre-listing items. At this appointment they will be preparing the house by turning on lights, setting up gift baskets, and staging different areas of the home. As Justin began assembling his team, he knew that Jennifer Freer at Melcer Tile would be a good person to bring on. “I’ve been working with Melcer Tile for over 10 years, so there was no question,” mentions Justin. “We had built trust with them and appreciated that they would help us make sure

the tile selections and designs we wanted for the home were perfect.” Once the team was constructed, the process began. With ideas already formulated from the builder and designers, Jennifer stepped in to help with the tile selections. “We all wanted the home to be unique,” declares Jennifer. “For us, specifically, we knew that we needed to have standout features in the tile which entailed a lot of teamwork between myself and the ladies of Embellish Interiors to find what they were looking for.” Choosing not only the best looking tile for a home, but also the most functional tile is extremely important. “Many people are looking for easy maintenance, especially at the beach,” illustrates Jennifer. “This home features a very high-end look

hen Justin Roland of construction company, King and Society began work on this spec home, he knew that he needed to curate a group of professionals who would work well together and get the job done. “I had a collaborative vision to bring a grand beachfront house to life on Isle of Palms,” explains Justin. “It needed to have a bit of a twist on traditional Lowcountry architecture by bringing in transitional and modern architectural features and finishes.”

while also offering trouble-free upkeep for the homeowners.” Jennifer and the team selected porcelain and ceramic tile which are both simple to clean with soap and water or tile cleaner, respectively. For the bathrooms throughout the home, the team ventured to design a simple, coastal vibe. “We eliminated the traditional shower elements like curbs and drains and instead used low profile elements like zero entry showers and invisible liner drains,” adds Justin. “These small changes assisted in helping us refine the design we were aiming for.” In any project, it is crucial to find contractors whom you trust. Designed for Living One Park Circle couple desired a yard with plenty of space for activities, which led them to work with Living Designs Landscaping to bring their oasis to life.
P
ark Circle has been rated one of the top spots to live, based on architectural diversity, craftsmanship of the homes, plus it’s walkability, and the sense of community that comes with living in a small-town-esque area. This area has been praised for its lovingly crafted older homes, surrounding a 30-plus acre park with baseball fields, playgrounds, and a weekly farmer’s market. Full of character, Joe and Elaine Feriera’s home is no exception. They partnered with landscape architect Heyward Townsend of Living Designs Landscaping to complete the

exterior living spaces. “Joe and I started with his front yard, planning out the different layers of the plantings and determining different species that would be fairly low-maintenance,” Heyward explains. For the front yard, Heyward and the Ferieras opted for a cascading effect from the front porch down to the street. They chose Viburnum Suspensum bushes near the foundation of the house, down to medium-height ground covers surrounding the stoop, and then an Asian Jasmine ground cover in contained spaces all the way out to the brick retaining wall near

the sidewalk. By the side of the house, Heyward selected more Viburnum Suspensum to fill the area around the birdbath, as well as brightly blooming Lantana and grassy Flax Lilies along a stone path to pique one’s interest. Once the front yard was near completion, Joe requested Heyward take a look at the backyard spaces on his lot and share some feedback about redesigning them for maximum outdoor living opportunities. “Joe and Elaine added a roof over a patio connected to the house, a pergola, and a covered sitting area alongside the detached garage,” describes Heyward. “They entertain a lot and have a big family with lots of grandkids, so when everyone is over, they need a lot of space.”
Heyward provided the optimal design with “rooms” in the outdoor living areas of the backyard. The area closest to the fence, along the street side is considered a more peaceful spot, with benches placed here and there for relaxation. They are surrounded by Autumn ferns, “Soft Caress” Mahonia, Farfugium, Hydrangeas, and a Japanese Maple. The wider, middle part of the yard is set apart for activities, with plenty of lush Zoysia Empire grass to protect the grandkids’ feet and maintain a cohesive design. Ultra Modern Dwelling Partnering with a professional architect was the only option for these west coast transplants to achieve the custom architectural features in their Old Village home.

hen these Mt. Pleasant homeowners moved from the west coast 25 years ago, they purchased a starter home to begin their lives on a new coast. A few years ago, they decided to renovate; that is until they found their lot in the Old Village. Once they saw that lot, they knew it was time to take the plunge and begin their custom home journey. Enter Rush Dixon of Rush Dixon Architects. The husband of this Mt. Pleasant duo was riding his bike in the Old Village when he ran into Rush. “I saw him around the neighborhood and knew he was an architect,” he

said. “At that time, we were planning on renovating our current home, but later decided to build and thought Rush was the right person for the job.” Prior to “putting pen to paper,” as Rush often says, he and his team took the time to listen to the homeowners and assessed the information they were given. Distinctive Cabinetry Design After the Busicks had lived in their Daniel Island home for a few years, they knew it was time to adjust the floorplan to meet their physical needs.
M
ary and her husband had finally had enough of living in a home that was designed for someone else’s lifestyle, so Mary called upon several of the Lowcountry’s premier home professionals to design and add additional spaces that met her husband’s physical needs. “Because my husband is in a wheelchair now, it was vitally important that we design a new master suite

that afforded him a good measure of independence,” explains Mary. That’s why she decided to work with Teresa Blackmon of Southeastern Custom Homes as the builder for the addition of a new master suite, mudroom, and porch areas—all of which are designed to be handicapped accessible. Through that partnership, Mary also met Thomas Lauderdale of Advanced Kitchen Designs, who

creates custom cabinetry for kitchens and bathrooms, as well as other custom cabinetry options. “It was wonderful working with Thomas, because he was so accommodating to my husband’s requirements as well as the aesthetic and other functional requests we made for the bathroom and mudroom,” describes Mary. Thomas worked closely with Mary’s niece, Sarah Heckler of Sarah Heckler Interior Designs, to create the best, most functional master bathroom and mudroom possible for Mary and her husband. “Sarah and Mary came to me with plenty of ideas and inspiration about what they wanted, but also a very detailed list of the features they needed,” mentions Thomas. “From there it was just a matter of hashing out the minor details so that we could design a space that Mary loved in terms of style, but that also worked for her husband.” Mary adds, “The most important thing we needed was for the cabinetry in the bathroom to be wheelchair accessible, and Thomas made that happen without any compromise to our style.” The mudroom is Mary’s new favorite space now, because of the great design elements that hide all of the utilitarian aspects, like the laundry machines, the pull-out ironing board, and a drying rack. The space also serves as an attractive wet bar and even a butler’s pantry for when the couple grills out on their new porch. The Art of Porch Sitting For this Cane Bay couple, a Porch Panel room was a must-have to be able to enjoy the Lowcountry’s extensive outdoor living season.
A
fter a fruitful visit to Charleston Home + Design magazine’s home show and plenty of research on their part, Cane Bay homeowners Jay and Cindy knew that it was time to enlist the help of Terry Conlin and his team at Express Sunrooms. They had a very specific design in mind for the addition to their home and needed a knowledgeable crew to make their dream into a reality.
“We wanted to have a space that allowed us to sit and appreciate the outdoors without the trouble of baking in the sun on a patio or dealing 118 • CH+D • Fall 2019
with all of the pollen,” explains Cindy. Since both Jay and Cindy had fathers who were career carpenters, they also paid very close attention to detail. “After talking with Terry extensively, we knew that working with Express Sunrooms would bring people who had the same level of care for detail that we had and that we were looking for,” adds Jay. The overall project required a good bit of building and carpentry on the part of Express Sunrooms, for which they planned and communicated with the couple, planned some more, helped navigate the Homeowner’s

Association with each revision that had to be made for the addition, and designed each phase to meet Jay and Cindy’s needs. “We worked with Jay and Cindy to design each aspect of their addition and then built the entire Porch Panel room, the patio, and the terrace over the patio,” describes Terry. “Leon, our superintendent, was an invaluable asset on this project, too, since we had to engineer and add special reinforcements to several places in the Porch Panel room.” Most of those reinforcements were to support Cindy’s request for a hanging bed. “Since we were planning to spend a lot of time on the porch, comfortable seating was a must-have for us,” Cindy mentions.
Stairway to Patio Haven Not only do the homeowners have a beautiful sunroom to bask in, but they also have a custom staircase that leads to the expansive patio.
Now Jay and Cindy start every day in their Porch Panel sunroom, with their coffee and quiet time, enjoying the results of a team that was supportive of their requests, as well as accommodating and extra-communicative. Scandinavian-Inspired Abode For this West Ashley homeowner, a European flared domicile was an easy design choice for she and her family to enjoy for years to come.
W
hen Becky Hoppmann purchased her West Ashley dwelling just over 10 years ago, she was thrilled to be back in the Lowcountry. She also knew there were certain updates on her home that needed to be done. “I grew up in Charleston and always knew I would eventually come back,” explains Becky. “We loved this neighborhood in West Ashley because it’s not so cookie cutter and it’s quiet—which played a big role in why we chose this home specifically.” Once they moved in and the kids grew up a little bit, Becky and her husband decided that it was time to start

renovations. “We started one room at a time and went from there.” The kitchen was the first space that Becky remodeled. “The kitchen was initially done in a dark stain with wood paneling,” mentions Becky. “We had to prime and paint everything and seal it. There was also a random door next to the kitchen that made no sense, so we removed that.” Becky’s goal in the design was to update and modernize everything while adding a Scandinavian twist—minimal and simple elements were must-haves. The same design goals in the kitchen were transferred to the other spaces

in the home as well. “We wanted a modern, classic vibe to be carried throughout the home so we had a combination of old and new items,” adds Becky. “Keeping things calm and muted, but also not being afraid to have a crazy cool accessory color or fun pillows, was something that we kept in mind as well.” Not only was Becky focused on the style of the space, but she was also focused on selecting items that properly fit in her 1,650 square foot home. “I paid close attention to the scale of the room in the selection of the sofa, the chair, and the television stand,” says Becky. Sleek Ranch Redesign These Mt. Pleasant homeowners enlisted the help of home professionals to morph their 1990’s ranch into a polished, new space.
A
fter using Omega Cabinetry in their Hilton Head Island home, these homeowners knew they needed to find someone in Charleston who would use the same cabinet line. That’s where Fran Ploetz of Southeast Kitchens stepped in. “The homeowner had done her research to find a dealer who carried Omega Cabinetry in the Charleston area,” says Fran. “That was Southeast Kitchens, so she gave me a call and said she had a whole home renovation and we set up an appointment.”
The homeowners were able to browse 124 • CH+D • Fall 2019
through the showroom and take a look at what was available to them. “I set a plan to make sure I showed them everything that might fit into their space,” explains Fran. “From there, I put the designs together, they reviewed them, and were happy with the layout so we moved forward with the project.” Once everyone received the goahead from the homeowners, Fran and his team began the extensive re-haul on the kitchen. “We started with an empty room and kept lines of communication with the homeowners completely open,” expounds Fran. “The must-have features and

appliances that needed to be included were two big things we considered when coming up with the initial plans.” Upon the homeowners final selections, Fran used his company’s CAD system for the design that allowed him to show the homeowners color renderings and perspectives to show what the finalized layout would look like. Collaboration was the name of the game throughout this project. Between the interior designer, architect, and kitchen designer at Southeast Kitchens, certain elements were modified to best fit the space. “Creating a functional space was of utmost importance throughout this whole project,” adds Fran.
“The kitchen is the main fulcrum in a home, so we wanted to ensure that the homeowners had the best look and that the whole house flowed together.”
Natural hues are carried throughout the design including the cabinetry and countertops.

Alluring Alterations The Parkers called upon Priester’s Custom Contracting and Crosby Creations Home Designs to remodel their downtown dwelling when it came time to move in after their son graduated from The Citadel.

arb and Dave Parker knew that once their son finished his graduate program at The Citadel it would be time to move to Charleston into the downtown house they purchased for him to live in until they retired. Once they had permanently taken up residence, they had a very clear idea of the changes that needed to be made to turn it into a suited to their lifestyle. It didn’t take long for the Parkers to give Priester’s Custom Contracting a ring. Barb and Dave had worked with Tommy Priester on a previous project for the same home and their experience was be-

yond compare. “We met Tommy at the Charleston Home + Design show a few years back,” describes Dave. “Everything about how he greeted us, how he asked us about the structure we needed, and how he recommended Jodi Crosby of Crosby Creations Home Designs was exactly what we were looking for in a contractor.” Five years later, after Tommy and Jodi had helped the Parkers build a detached garage, Barb and Dave brought the team back together for the full renovation of their abode. “Barb came to me with the request for an open floor plan, a redesigned kitchen, and an added guest bathroom on the first floor,” explains Jodi.

Design Decisions Like most projects, communication is key. This was no different for the Parkers and Tommy Priester. Because of Tommy’s focus on communicating with his clients, they were never confused about design changes like adding support beams throughout the first floor.

Crisp Countertops and Cabinetry The Parker’s all white kitchen offers plenty of countertop space and cabinet storage for all of their cooking gadgets. A built-in wine rack tops off the design.
It was a tall order, considering there were no plans to expand the current footprint of the house, but Jodi and the Parkers nailed down the design. After that, it was Tommy’s turn to take those plans and turn them into a reality. Every builder can say from experience that there will always be surprises in a remodeling project and the Parker’s house was no exception. “We worked with Barb and Dave to solve several surprises in the remodeling process, like mold remediation, the placement of the HVAC return, the remodel of the master bathroom and closet, and other, smaller surprises as well,” adds Tommy. From Tommy’s perspective, it is essential for him to maintain the relationship with his clients by keeping the lines of communication open about every single detail. Stunning Natural Surfaces Once these Daniel Island homeowners put together the dream team for creating their dazzling abode, nothing could stop them from attaining the perfect space for their family.
M
ichael and Amy knew they wanted to build a completely custom house on Daniel Island as their primary residence, and after extensive research and interviews, it was clear that SHELTER Custom-Built Living was the builder for them. The team and experience they brought to the table was incomparable, and the couple had a very specific vision. Part of the team that SHELTER, and interior designer, Hollis Erickson put together for the homeowners was Stone Central, a countertop fabricator, and Vitoria International, a natural and man-made stone supplier. “Hollis came 130 • CH+D • Fall 2019
to us with a clear idea of what the homeowners wanted in the different areas of their home,” explains Bonni Agnew of Stone Central. “First, she took the homeowners to Vitoria International’s showroom, walked them around their warehouse to see the different slabs they could choose from, and then I met with all of them to discuss what they were looking for in terms of what materials would be the best fit for their lifestyle. Throughout the process of selecting natural stone for each space in the home, Hollis and Bonni worked closely with Adriene Araujo of Vitoria International to find the perfect slabs. “When

you have a large project like a kitchen, or even just a large kitchen island, it’s normal to have to purchase a whole slab,” describes Adriene. “But for some of the smaller projects, like a powder room, we recommend for most homeowners, including Michael and Amy, that they ask a fabricator if they have any remnants from larger projects. This saves time, money, and materials for everyone involved in the project.” Bonni and Adriene both have similar approaches when they work with a homeowner to choose the right countertops for their home. Much like with Michael and Amy, they always ask about a homeowner’s day-to-day routine, “Knowing all of these things makes it a lot easier to narrow down the choices for the homeown-
er, which in turn makes the decision much less overwhelming,” says Bonni. Adriene adds, “It also means that we’re educating the homeowners about the materials they’re choosing, and how to care for each one properly, which is, in our opinion, the most important step in the process.” With a team that cares so much about the satisfaction of their homeowners and the longevity of the materials, it’s no mystery how these Daniel Island homeowners were able to build their dream home. ✴

Livin’ the Shore Life To cultivate their coastal dream home, this Kiawah Island couple partnered with a professional designer.

y working with an interior designer from the inception of their home, this Kiawah Island couple was able to design their quintessential abode. Ask any professional interior designer about timing in a custom homebuilding project and they will declare that the earlier a homeowner brings on an interior designer, the more seamless the whole process will be. Such was the case with Andrew and Holly Bernardini’s Kiawah Island construction project. The builder, Knight Residential Group, worked closely with Karen Germond of KMD Interiors to help their homeowners select custom finishes for their new home, and the couple was happy to take advantage of Karen’s expertise.

“They requested a custom trim work package to create a unique setting throughout their home, and I worked with them to design and select other custom finishes in order to marry their more traditional style with their desire to have a comfortable, coastal-inspired home,” describes Karen. The couple hails from Charlotte, North Carolina, so the pictures they showed Karen of the rooms and spaces and designs that they liked were fairly traditional in color, but they also wanted to be sure they could come home to a lighter, relaxing atmosphere while they are in their home in Charleston. “Holly and Andrew brought me on as their interior designer to help them bring their vision to life,” Karen

explains. “It was a fun and challenging process because we had to lock down the paint colors early without being able to see them on the walls, at least not until we made all the furniture and textile selections,” expounds Karen. “We had to make those textile selections from chips of paint rather than seeing samples of fabric and other materials so I really had to rely on my gut instinct in the absence of being able to physically see it all together.” A.C. PRO’S Kathryn Budig and Kate Fagan open their pop art-sy Mt. Pleasant home to Charleston Home + Design magazine to chat about everything from yoga, to sports, to journalism, and even cookies. Because Kate and Kathryn wear so many hats, their lives as a health professional and a sports professional are hectic, as well as energetic and exciting. Join CH+D as they share the paths that have led them to their current careers and to each other.

F
or creatively minded people, it is impossible to deny that part of yourself. No matter how hard you try, or delay, or bargain, you can never shake that need to bring into the world something new, something exciting, or just something that speaks to you. Science has proven, particularly in recent years, that creative brains are wired differently than our
methodical, left-brained counterparts. Even doctors who have studied the brain as it fires while being used in creative processes have concluded that people who are more right-brained can simultaneously utilize brain networks which do not typically work together otherwise. All of this information draws me to a parallel. Maybe that’s what it’s like–maybe that’s the science behind what makes Kate Fagan and her wife, Kathryn Budig, such a perfect match. Where one is seemingly more analytical and pensive, the other is bubbly and energetic, but they both meet in the middle in terms of their constantly evolving creative pursuits and their unwavering support of one another, thereby engaging each “network” of their relationship at the same time. Separately, they are powerhouses in their own rights. Together, they are like a whole, brilliant, creative brain, flexible when life needs to be double-teamed, and capable of anything.

Kate and Kathryn, you’ve grown up in very different parts of the country and traveled a good bit for your careers. Tell us about where you grew up and your early years in your pursuits of your professions. Kathryn: I was born in Lawrence, Kansas. My dad was the chancellor at the University of Kansas when I was young. Then we moved to New Jersey when I was in middle school, and we lived there until I left for college at the University of Virginia. There, I double majored in English Literature and Drama. After college, I moved out to Los Angeles. It was in L.A. that I learned how to teach yoga. Kate: I grew up in Upstate New York, just outside of Albany, in a town called Schenectady. We didn’t move around as much as Kathryn, but I did decide to go out west for college. I played basketball at the University of Colorado in Boulder. After college, I played a year in Ireland before returning to Colorado to play two seasons with a semi-pro team called the Colorado Chill.
Kate, you were a professional athlete for several years, and

worked hard since you were young to “make it,” as some would say. Other than a love for basketball, what inspired you to choose that course? Kate: My parents were the main role models in my life. My dad played professional basketball overseas when I was little, in France. And even once he stopped playing professionally, he played pick-up games, and he played in leagues, and he would take me with him every time he played. I saw how hard he worked, how much he loved the game, and that was a huge part of my childhood. Kathryn: She has the best brain for stats. I don’t know how she keeps it all in there, but if you ask her about any player, any game, or any team, she can rattle off whatever you want to know about them! She never fails to impress me with how she can remember so many details. Kate: I’ll admit, I love stats and how they play into how each game unfolds. It’s always a little bit of surprise in basketball, because there are so many variables that come into play.

POSES & PRO’S So, I learned to play because of my dad. When I would go out onto the court between games, he would always give me pointers. From a very young age I had a very sharp skill set because I had the best mentor, so I kind of had a leg up when I started joining teams and playing for school.
From there you basically had your choice of colleges you wanted to play for, correct? What was it like for you to play professionally, after college? Kate: Mostly, and I ended up choosing to play for the University of Colorado. We were always in the Top Ten and it was really challenging. We played in the NCAA Tournament. I had to put a lot of time and effort into basketball. After college I played professionally in Ireland for a year, which was a learning experience, before I came back to the States to play for the Colorado Chill, which was part of the NWBL at the time. Kathryn: She’ll never brag, but she was really good! And she set a record in the Big 12 Conference for making something like 44 consecutive free throws.
ent. What made you decide to pursue a different career path rather than keep playing basketball? Kate: I’d always wanted to do other things, too, it’s just that basketball took
The idea of starting at the bottom rung of a new career was scary. That’s a big part of the reason I kept playing as long as I did. Every country across the world has their own professional leagues and I probably could have followed that path for longer, but after a couple of years, I just knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do anymore. So I moved on to sports journalism. My first job was at the Ellensburg Daily Record, where I could write about what I knew: sports. I’d found my niche.
College led you both to some interesting places, and then beyond. How do you feel that the choices you made during and after college have led you to what you do now? Kathryn: I actually think that both of my majors are really useful in my job. Theatre and drama still come into play, because teaching is as much performing as it is relaying information. As a yoga teacher, I’m in front of people all the time, so having a background onstage is really useful in knowing how to keep peoples engaged.
My English degree is helpful, too, because I learned how to communicate with people on a deeper level. Kate’s vast reservoir of footwear are proudly displayed in her closet. fort into playing basketball that it took me a while to finally make a change. When you’re playing basketball as a woman, the ‘finish line’ doesn’t look the same as it looks for men. It’s still as challenging, but the rewards at the top, if you make it that far, well, they’re not very high. Knowing that, there were a lot of calculations happening in my head during that time. Ultimately, it all boiled down to how much I wanted to play basketball versus how much I wanted to be a writer, and basketball had lost a lot of it’s ‘fun’ as you might call it. I knew that I was delaying the next version of myself because I was scared, so at some point, I just said, ‘I want to write books. I don’t want to play basketball anymore,” and I worked out how I could justify writing as a career. I changed my perceptions of what it looked to be a writer. I knew I couldn’t afford to sit around and try to write the “next great American novel”, so I got into journalism.
Kathryn, we’ve covered a lot of Kate’s past at this point. Can you describe
your experiences after college? What made you decide to move from Virginia to Los Angeles? Particularly, what was it about yoga that made you think it should be your career? Kathryn: It’s kind of funny how it all started, but basically I just started practicing yoga in college for my own edification. I wanted to pursue a career in acting and drama at the time. So it was between L.A. and New York, and since I had already been on the East coast and spent a lot of time in New York, I decided to try L.A. I really fell in love with the yoga practice in college, so I decided to learn how to teach it while I looked for acting work. I did a teacher training as soon as I got to L.A. and it was very serendipitous that that community kind of took me in as I realized how toxic Hollywood was. All of those experiences came together to lead me to making a shift into yoga. I trained with two of the most senior,
fantastic teachers—Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller—and was working at one of the best studios, called Yogaworks. When people say things like, ‘All roads lead to Julliard,’ it was like that. In yoga, it seems like all roads lead through Yogaworks. At the time I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but it has all worked out for the best. That road later led to me writing for Women’s Health Magazine. They hired me to be their yoga editor. And then I was also writing for Huffington Post for a while. I wrote the Big Book of Yoga for Women’s Health Magazine–that was my first book. It was so fun to write because I finally got to put my English degree to use. After that I started touring almost nonstop for the next 10 years, teaching yoga on the road. I still teach on the road, but I’ve cut it nearly in half, and now teach on an online platform called Glo, which you could call my ‘home’ studio, because I don’t have a studio I teach at here in Charleston. allows me to live wherever I want, so it’s a win-win situation.
Kate, you worked as a sports journalist for a few places before you landed at ESPN. Tell us about your experience there. Kate: A lot of people look at ESPN as the source of sports information, so if you get into sports journalism it’s almost like you’ve hit the top. And it’s rightfully the destination because it’s proven itself in so many different facets, through their magazine, website, TV, documentaries, and podcasts. I mean, it’s just the place where you’re given the opportunity to grow in whatever content medium you want to pursue. I really appreciated that about working there. I loved being there and growing, both 142 • CH+D • Fall 2019
as a writer and then on TV, which was an unexpected aspect of my job there, but a really great one. ESPN always did a great job of putting you in uncomfortable situations routinely. They would say, ‘Hey you’re hosting this show.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh! You’re going to put me on live TV? I don’t have a broadcast journalism degree!’ There were a lot of things I just had to figure out, and that was awesome.
What would you say you’ve learned through these different experiences in your lives? Kathryn: I think a lot of people want to make a difference with what they do for a living. And, as a society, we’re really addicted to tangible results. What I’ve learned through all of this is that what you put into the world may deeply be changing people’s lives and affecting
them and you might never, ever know that. But when we don’t see those results, we assume that we shouldn’t push forward with what we’re doing. We think, ‘I’m not getting the accolades that I want to be getting.’ Meanwhile, the quiet, steady, long game is what ends up making all of the difference. So even if I’m feeling a little down or doubting myself, I just remember why I’m doing what I do: not for accolades. It’s always wonderful when someone says to me, ‘I’ve been practicing with you for 15 years and you got me through this period of my life,’ or something along those lines. But I also work hard for the people who don’t say those things, even when they’re feeling them. I just remind myself in those lulls, I’m still doing something that’s powerful, even if I’m not getting the direct response. I do what I do to

share a healthy lifestyle with people, not because I need a pat on the back. So, for me it’s just been that focus on what we are doing that’s actually making a difference. Kate and I have even talked about starting an organization together, some kind of non-profit. Then we realized that what we really need to be doing is supporting the people who’ve already put in the blood, sweat, and tears. And devoting our time and money and if we can help their platform, then that’s ideal.
As we touched on earlier, you’ve both hopped around the country for different jobs or opportunities, but how and where did you actually meet? Kathryn: I was a sponsored athlete when Kate was working for ESPN. ESPNW has a summit every fall, and since Under Armour was sponsoring the summit that year, I was sent out there to teach for them 144 • CH+D • Fall 2019
and she was speaking at it. Kate: It was a bit of a whirlwind, with so many people in attendance, but we kept in touch afterward and everything just fell into place from there.
We’ve also touched on the fact that you’re both published authors, several times over. What drove or inspired you to write the books you’ve written? Kathryn: My first book was Women’s Health The Big Book of Yoga, which I had the opportunity to write because I worked with Women’s Health at the time. I’ve realized that the book has ended up being a great tool for people who are either new or curious about yoga. My second book, Aim True, is half-yoga, half-recipes. It’s more of a lifestyle book. The name is derived from the Greek Goddess Artemis, because I love mythology.
You also produce a podcast together, called “Free Cookies,” of which I am personally a huge fan! What initially inspired this podcast idea? Kate: Kathryn was the driving force behind the podcast; she had been wanting to start one for a few years. Kathryn: Yeah, I was thinking about doing one on my own. Then I thought, ‘Wow, and it’ll be even more interesting with Kate.’ [laughs] Kate: I was working with ESPN at the time, so I was required to pitch it to them first before I could do it. They said yes and they wanted to produce it, which was awesome. So they produced it for a season and then we wanted to do it on our own so that we could have a little more freedom with the guests and the topics.
The podcast features a wide variety of fascinating guests and thoughtful conversations. How do you decide which people to invite on the show?
Kate: We focus on people who are passionate about their areas of expertise, who are saying something interesting and thinking different thoughts. And we just have honest conversations about those topics. Kathryn: For the first season, we mostly spoke with athletes because ESPN was producing the podcast, but now we can chat with whomever about whatever we find interesting. This season we’ve had a wide range of topics and guests, from factory farming, to entrepreneur Stacy Smallwood, owner of three fashion boutiques in Charleston, including Hampden Clothing.
Your home is so fun and energetic, not to mention styled just perfectly. How did you find this slice of paradise in the Old Village? Kathryn: One of my best friends here, Ashley Cebulka, was the one that turned me on to the Old Village. Downtown is great too, but Old Village is
where I felt at home because you get the best of both worlds. And she’s obsessed with looking at homes. So she actually found this home for me, which I bought in 2014. Our previous neighbor, Paul Swedloff of the Sandbox Group, built this house, so it was brand new when I bought it. Kate and I added the bookcase in the library. And we remodeled the backyard together. It’s really hard to find a modern house in Charleston. I love this house because I feel like it’s a good combination of modern, coastal, and southern at the same time. Just because modern can get so cold so quickly. Kate: We lived in Brooklyn for less than a year in 2017. I mean I lived in Brooklyn for seven years. But Kathryn moved up for a while, and then we moved back here in the fall, coming up on two years ago. It’s such a great spot, and the house itself is so comfortable and beautiful. Especially now that we’ve made it our own.

POSES & PRO’S was inspired both by soccer and my love of sports. It doesn’t sound like it would work, but it is such a conversational piece. Kathryn: Everything we have in the house, we have for a reason, to tell a story or start a conversation. That way everything in our home is us, a part of our history, so to speak. We just recently finished renovating the backyard this year. We wanted to maximize all of our living space. So that was the one area that was not really being used. The dogs would just go out back, and that was all. Our thought process started on that project a year and a half ago. Kate: Originally, we wanted to build a pool, and there were so many hoops you had to go through, that it just wasn’t worth it for us to go deal with all of that and then care for a pool afterward. Kathryn: Our solution was a wonderful Stock Tank Pool, that we can dip into whenever it gets too hot. Plus it brings an industrial style to the backyard that is just wonderful. And we have these great flamingo floats, so we can lounge in the huge float, which is really all we wanted to be able to do
So, what’s on the horizon for you both?

What are your favorite design concepts and how did you two combine your varying personal styles?
our styles. I’d say pop art is the best way to describe my style, while Kathryn’s is a little more bohemian-eclectic.
Kate: After we moved back here from New York, we knew we needed the space to be ours.
Kathryn: We cross over a lot. It’s very rare that she wants something or I want something and we disagree with each other.
Kathryn: We just kind of swept it clean and built it together. It has really good bones, and a great energy. I love this house so much.
Kate: We’ve curated a lot of art too, that really speaks to us. I could tell a story about nearly every piece of art in the house, like the Zinedine Zidane piece over the dining and kitchen area, or the large piece in the stairwell, that

Kathryn: I’m still doing some traveling internationally to teach yoga workshops, but we’ve got a few things in the works. Kate: We’re pursuing a TV show that would basically be a lot like our podcast, but on TV. We would have guests over to our home to cook for them and interview them. We’d love to have a recipe component to it. Kathryn: That’s part of why I’m also working on putting together a recipe book. Kate: And from there we would dive into the kind of conversations and interesting topics that we feature on “Free Cookies.” And of course, any moment we have to breathe in between, we’re always writing, writing, writing. ♥

IDEA REVISITED In 2009, in the middle of the “Great Recession,” Charleston Home + Design magazine finished construction of our one and only Idea House. It took over a year to construct, and over 200 local suppliers and contractors contributing their hard work and products. Now we are looking back at the products that have withstood the test of time and are still performing like they were installed yesterday.

Steel Cabling Handrail
The 20 by 20 rooftop deck bestows uninterrupted sightlines of the Ashley River in part because of the steel cabling handrail system. It is a great place for the family to enjoy Friday night fireworks after a Riverdogs game. (below right) To allow for easy access to the rooftop, a spiral staircase was installed off of the playroom.

Charleston has been growing and with this growth comes recognizing that flooding in the city gets more dangerous every year. With that, a program was started called “Living with Water.” The program focused on four target areas that flood and how to manage said flooding. The city worked in conjunction with members of local businesses and Dutch experts to help reduce the risk of flooding. Landscape architect,
J.R. Kramer, of REMARK Landscape Architecture, was a part of the initial design discussions and project overview. He also participated in the design charrette.
