Joe Davies, owner of Liberty Cedar, and cohort Russell Fogg unveil their finished product on the Hancock family's home in Briar's Creek.

"My wife Jenny and I became aware of Betty's work many years ago when we were dating and I took her to one of the art walks downtown. Years later, after my grandmother gave us a cash gift for Christmas, we revisited many of the same galleries on the walk with the intention of buying some original art for our home. We wanted to honor my grandmother by purchasing the most beautiful painting we could find and, although we saw many beautiful paintings, our favorites came from Betty's gallery on Queen Street. Today, 'my Granny's painting' hangs in our bedroom where we admire it everyday."

Lasting Impressions

T

hank you for picking up our Fall 2010 issue of Charleston Home + Design magazine. Over the years, our Fall issue has become known as the "Design Issue" since we traditionally devote a substantial number of pages to showcasing the work of local architects. About six years ago, we approached the Charleston chapter of the American Institute of Architects about partnering with us to promote the concept that when building a new home, or undergoing a large remodel or renovation, homeowners should always consult with an architect. We told AIA Charleston that we would like to provide two platforms to local architects to promote this idea...publish their exceptional work in our magazine and also donate gobs of display space to local architects to showcase their work at our Fall home show, the Custom Home + Remodel Show. Beginning on page 78, you'll find the 2010 edition of The Architects' Gallery of Custom Homes—a special photographic feature filled with page after page of spectacular local homes, all of which were designed by the dozen participating local architect firms. Dovetailing with this feature was The Architects' Gallery of Custom Homes at the Custom Home + Remodel Show held August 27-29, 2010. In the years since we began exhibiting The Architects' Gallery at the Custom Home + Remodel Show, countless homeowners have picked the brains of the participating architects, asking questions about their own projects, and gaining insight into how an architect can improve a home, make it more livable, more energy efficient, and—ultimately—make it more valuable with a better design. But the Architects' Gallery at the Custom Home + Remodel Show and the feature here in Charleston Home + Design magazine serve another purpose as well...inspiration. For those homeowners who appreciate the architectural details of these fine homes, we hope you'll gain inspiration for your own home in our 45-page feature. In our cover feature on well-known local artist Betty Anglin Smith, we take you inside her charming home on 24 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

Wadmalaw Sound in Meggett, SC and introduce you to her three adult children—triplets, mind you—all of whom are accomplished artists in their own right. In our other two features, we focus on the work of Max G. Crosby Construction Company, and also present some fabulous remodeling ideas whether you are looking to spend a little or a lot. Finally, the Charleston design community lost a great friend this past summer when Edwin Gardner tragically passed away. I met Edwin only twice but, as he did with so many others, he made a profound impression on me. The first was at an architect event in which he was accompanied by his 11-year old daughter Olive. Being the father of two daughters myself, I feel a connection when I meet other "daughters only" dads. All the architects seemed to know Edwin and, in between the laughter and the smiles, Olive was always close by. When I asked him about that, he told me he brought her everywhere with him. In June, I saw Edwin and Olive again when we presented his wife Whitney Powers of Studio A with an award for being one of Charleston Home + Design magazine's Most Influential Architects for 2010. As Whitney was being interviewed and photographed with her award, I heard Edwin say tongue-in-cheek, "We've finally arrived!" A gregarious and generous soul, he will be remembered fondly.

He, along with an all-volunteer medical team, administered medications totaling in excess of $10,000 free of charge to those in need. Other notable acts of benevolence included caring for 50 orphans, installing two water filtration systems for the local orphanage, installing a water system to provide safe drinking water for a village of 20,000 people, and purchasing one cow for ophans' daily milk needs. The group was even able to save the lives of two pregnant women and their babies by identifying them as near death due to breach fetal position and preeclampsia, and subsequently funding emergency c-sections. Local Painting Contractor Responds to Stringent New Lead Laws Passed WEST ASHLEY—On April 22, 2010, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency passed new laws to protect homeowners and building professionals from the toxic affects of lead dust. Per the new rules, contractors and subcontractors undertaking any remodeling project of at least six square feet of a home's interior or at least 20 square feet of its exterior are required to receive special certification if the home was built before 1978. Vincent Smith, who owns the company Vincent A. Smith Services and has been in business for 29 years—many of which he spent as a general contractor—isn't surprised by the new law. Explains the painting contractor, "The concern over lead has really escalated in the past few years, especially in Charleston where there is a high concentration of older homes." To better service clients and avoid the hefty penalties that can run upwards of $32,000 per offense under the new law, Vincent received certification well before the spring deadline. To speak with Vincent, whose company also offers complete home and business maintenance services, call (864) 244-3366 or email vincentasmith@yahoo.com.

A charity golf tournament at the Cassique golf course will help provide young cancer patients with the educational storybook "Champ's Story."

KIAWAH ISLAND—Russ Pritchard of Audio Warehouse knows a thing or two about solving problems. As the owner of one of Charleston's oldest audio/video integration companies, he helps homeowners, builders, and architects install high tech systems all along the East Coast. Russ is also a cancer survivor and a founding Board Member and President of the ASCEND Foundation, a local all-volunteer non-profit focused on making cancer a national priority. The goal is to raise money to fund the Cancer Companion Program, a creative new tool to help children cope with cancer and to empower caregivers, educators, and families with a means to discuss the disease with children. The program is based around an educational storybook, Champ's Story, which tells the tale of one child's devotion as his best friend, a Golden Retriever, suffers with cancer. Coinciding with the September 13th golf tournament, the program will be launched at MUSC where the storybook and a stuffed toy dog will be placed into the hands of children with cancer. With massive limbs sprawling in all directions, the infamous Angel Oak tree on Johns Island elicits amazement from all who see it...particularly children, who long to climb on, swing from, and jump off its giant dipping arms. However, due to the advanced age of the monolithic tree, climbing is prohibited for the tree's protection. But thanks to installation artist Jennifer Van Winkle, kids visiting the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry through September can climb on a touch-friendly version of the tree. Part of a 700 square foot exhibit called TREEscape, the child-inspired version of the tree is equipped with a slide, a play space underneath, an activity center, and an ecology lab. In keeping with the display's organic roots, the bulk of its materials will be recycled, repurposed, or returned to nature upon its conclusion. For more information, call (843) 853-8962 or visit www.explorecml.org.

n 1986, a small company came to town with a novel idea: to sell Scandinavian style furniture to the people of Charleston. With a sleek look and bold lines, the company’s furnishings quickly found favor with inhabitants of the Holy City. Having added contemporary collections from several other countries to the repertoire, Danco Modern Furniture remains a popular shopping stop for people in the Lowcountry and beyond. We sat down with new owners Paul—who started his career at the company as a warehouse worker!—and his wife Debra to learn more about modern style. Danco opened its doors in 1986 on East Bay Street downtown before later settling in Mt. Pleasant, where it is still located today. How do you stay relevant in a society where the trends are always changing? Fortunately, the simple designs that characterize contemporary furniture stand the test of time well. And, while we started out as 36 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

Paul Haugaard, new owner of Danco, takes us on a tour of the Mt. Pleasant showroom and offers a few pointers for picking out modern furniture

Scandinavian furniture exclusively, we've added more modern furniture over the years from vendors both local and abroad. In that respect, we have changed somewhat with time to meet demand. Can you describe some of the hottest selling items you have in the store right now? American Leather sleepers, which are available in leather or fabric, are really popular! Also in high demand are the Ekornes stressless chairs, which come available in leather or fabric, three different sizes, and over 20 styles. What do you think are the most popular misconceptions about modern style furniture, and how does modern style mesh with the Lowcountry? I think the biggest misconception about modern furniture is that you have to go all

modern if you go modern at all. In truth, however, the simplicity of modern furniture design allows for it to be integrated into any style of decor. Modern style basically boils down to being functional, comfortable, and having clean lines. If our office had the kind of furniture you carry in your showroom, we might never leave work! When you do manage to tear away from your super-chic and comfy surroundings, how do you spend your free time? Well, right now I'm pretty much here all the time but, when I do manage to get away, I love to golf and to spend time with my family. Oh, and watch sports! To meet Paul and the rest of the Danco team in person, swing by the showroom located at 1035 Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant. ith so much buzz surrounding high efficiency home appliances, tankless water heaters are growing in popularity by the day. However, the average consumer still doesn't know how these heaters operate, or why they can offer a considerable energy savings over traditional water heaters. John Blitch III of Blitch Plumbing, who has installed the tankless systems in Lowcountry homes for over eight years, explains, "It's a simple concept, really. The water is heated on demand when called for, and shuts down when not in use. You don't have the constant usage of gas or electricity it takes to keep the water in a traditional style water tank hot." When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe in the tankless water heater and—in a natural gas or propane unit—is warmed by a gas burner to deliver a constant supply of hot water;

this "on-demand" system can prove 24- to 34- percent more energy efficient than traditional tank systems in homes that use less than 41 gallons of water daily. In addition to the energy savings, there are currently many other incentives associated with tankless systems. Homeowners who purchase and install qualifying systems by December 31 are eligible for a tax credit equal to 30-percent of the full purchase and installation price up to $1500. Furthermore, South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) offers a $300 credit to any customers who switch from an electric water heater to a natural gas tankless water heater, provided the natural gas is supplied by SCE&G. For more information on tankless water heaters, call Blitch Plumbing at (843) 795-9674 or visit blitchplumbing.com.

oes paper go in the same bin as plastic? Can I recycle my old computer? These and many other questions often plague recycling newcomers, as well as those simply wishing to explore the burgeoning world of recycled home products. To help ease families and businesses into environmentally sound and sustainable recycling practices, Fisher Recycling has—for nearly two decades—offered recycling services and products in the Lowcountry. The company, led by husband and wife team Chris and Elizabeth Fisher, provides recycling services to businesses for myriad materials, including glass, plastic, aluminum, tin, office paper, cardboard, newspaper, magazines, office electronics, computers and monitors, computer peripherals, printers, copiers, oyster shells, and corks; they provide 22-gallon, 64-gallon and 96-gallon recycling bins to store materials in until allotted pick-up

times. In addition to offering business recycling services, the eco-conscious company is our state's first full-circle vendor of recycled materials—meaning they can use recycled materials they collect for residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial applications. The company was even tapped recently to provide recycled glass countertops and other recycled products for use in the Sustainability Institute's GreenHouse Learning Center. Headquarters for the Institute's Energy Conservation Corps program, the Center serves as a public resource center for learning about cutting-edge, sustainable technologies, and is being touted as one of the greenest offices in the region. To learn about the different recycling services and products available, call Fisher Recyling at (843) 554-6099 or visit fisherrecycling.com.

home-work

I

n April of 1980, Bud Carpenter created Carpenter's Antiques & Restoration, Inc—a furniture and antiques restoration company. In the thirty years since, Bud and his wife Mary Stewart have opened several retail antique stores and refinishing shops, and Bud has restored a staggering 50,000+ pieces (!) of furniture. When the crafty couple isn't busy working on pieces for the shop or to place in their Mt. Pleasant home, they enjoy visiting with their three daughters and relish their new role as grandparents. Bud and Mary also spend time at the beach or on the water as often as possible. Ever the artisan, Bud even builds kayaks out of mahogany and the pair paddles them around Hobcaw Creek! We asked Bud to show off some of the work he has created for his own home.

Several years ago, a friend asked Bud to refinish their kitchen with a colored lacquered finish. Improving upon that inaugural experience, the company can now match any finish customers bring to them. In his own kitchen, Bud painted the dark wood stained cabinets a pleasing hazelnut hue and replaced the Formica countertops with walnut wood in the breakfast area (pictured) and marble in the main kitchen area. The island (not pictured) features countertops made from wood the couple found at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore.

Bud stands by the front door of their home, which was originally a wood door on an old church. To restore it, he refinished it and replaced the top four wood panels with beveled glass so the family could enjoy natural light in the front foyer.

The couple found the pine sleigh bed for their guest room for only $45, which Bud restored to get rid of a little unwanted paint. The bed side stand was found on the side of the road! "We love to look around and find bargains," explains Mary Stewart. "With a keen eye for what they will look like when refinished, Bud can really find the 'diamonds in the rough.'"

Bud found this round walnut table and late 1800 English chairs in Charlotte, and restored them to create a reading nook. An interior designer, Mary Stewart enjoys using Bud's creations to change up the look in their home and create clever alcoves like this one.

To learn more about Bud's work, call Carpenter's Antiques and Restoration, Inc. at (843) 884-3411. 46 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

5 Questions with... David & Amy Hill

Principal Architects & Owners of The Verdi Company In 1997, husband and wife team David and Amy Hill founded The Verdi Company in Asheville, North Carolina with a focus on costeffective, common-sense green building. The duo—capitalizing on Amy's educational background in art and architecture as well as David's extensive professional history, including time as an officer and architect in the United States Air Force—offers a range of green services, including property acquisition, site planning, custom architectural and interior design, and general contracting. The Hills relocated Verdi to Charleston in 2004 to be closer to their extended family and to take advantage of the great opportunities in the area for a company that truly understands sustainability coupled with one-on-one customer service. BLUEPRINT

What makes Charleston the perfect home base for your company? Since starting our "satellite office" in Charleston in 2004, our entire operation has been relocated to the area. Our new contacts and opportunities here have since led to our involvement in the design and construction of over 50 homes, the design of three new green neighborhoods, and some interesting local and national commercial work, including a new green prototype restaurant for Wendy’s Corporation.

some reason in particular David likes The People’s Building at 18 Broad Street (probably because of his secret fantasy of owning it some day). We also appreciate and support the ongoing revitalization of North Charleston and the Navy Yard, to the point where we’ve located our home, our business, and our children’s education there. Perhaps our most favorite architecture, though, is the William Enston Home community on upper King Street.

What are your favorite things to do in the Lowcountry when you're not working? There are times when we’re just couch potatoes like everyone else, but we love to get outdoors often and get our kids involved in doing things that are unique to living in a place like Charleston. We fish, crab, visit the beaches, hike out at Caw Caw Interpretive Center, and—in general—try to stay active outside.

48 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

From a “wow in architecture” standpoint, David has always been inspired by the Italian Futurists, a group of “City of Tomorrow” visionaries who conjured up fantastic urban landscapes and heroic building forms. On the other end of the spectrum, we both appreciate the often-unsung artistry of the craftsmen who created places like Charleston. They employed an attention to detail, a gut-check “feel” for architectural character and proportion, and—perhaps most importantly—they created green homes back in a time when the only way to do so was to build well and pay attention to what the sun and the wind were doing. Best advice that you have been given? “Partners are for dancing.” We very successfully partner on our projects, of course, with subcontractors and consultants and certainly with our clients. But it is rare that the goals, philosophies, and approaches of others mesh as well as from an intimate business standpoint as what we’ve already got together here at Verdi.

Favorite example of architecture in Charleston? Our favorite new neighborhood is probably I’on, but we also appreciate the context and history of downtown Charleston. For

Once difficult to navigate due to a dividing wall, the Willits' newly-renovated kitchen is a study in chic style and efficiency.

W

hen an addition to a very old historic home had been built 20 years ago, the resulting added space was subsequently divided by a wall; in one portion of the divided space was a kitchen, while the remaining portion consisted of a very small sitting room. As a passthrough between the two spaces proved both ineffective and unattractive, the entire space was rendered virtually impossible to navigate and—certainly—inefficient to use. The

Local artist Lisa Willits (lisawillits.com) and husband Jeremy

one redeeming feature of the addition was a nearly complete wall of windows overlooking a charming garden, which the current owners had designed and installed. Having had such a successful result from their first kitchen renovation (in a home a block and a half away) 12 years previously, the owners called on husband and wife team Tom and Duval of Kitchens By Design to create a new kitchen for the Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010 • 51

Willits. Duval's first course of action was removing the inconvenient dividing wall when she started creating new concepts for the renovated kitchen. To say the least, both Duval and the homeowners felt this was a great improvement! During the renovation and installation of the kitchen, General Contractor Tom had an idea: keep the artist/wife from coming in during the work state and, instead, "unveil" the space for the clients— complete with fresh flowers, no less—when the work was completed. When the project wrapped up right on schedule, Tom and Duval relished in the dramatic reveal. It was an inspired idea, for the clients never turned back and continuously enjoy sharing their new space with family and friends. v For more information, contact Kitchens By Design at (843) 849-6890 or visit kitchensbydesign-sc.com. 52 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

Although only 1,000 square feet, Greg and Bonnie Deininger's home now feels spacious and airy, thanks to changes made by C & T Enterprises.

from the foundation up Builder Travis Bedson and his team transform a Folly Beach abode

W

hen homeowners Greg and Bonnie Deininger first called builder Travis Bedson of C & T Enterprises, LLC, she simply needed help hanging a chandelier. Impressed with his work, Greg and Bonnie decided their Folly Beach bungalow could use a few more cosmetic touch-ups. "Once we finished a couple smaller projects," laughs Travis, "Bonnie kept finding more things for us to do. By the time we had fixed her foundation and opened up a room, she had settled on the idea of a full renovation." The Deininger's primary home, the 1,000 square foot cottage was ideal for the beach lifestyle but Travis knew he and his team could enhance the home's existing character and functionality. To maximize the impact of the small space, C & T packed each room with special details such as new mouldings to give the home a more clean, contemporary look. Travis and his team used pocket doors to eliminate any wasted space, and they increased the height of the living room ceiling to create the illusion of a larger space. Bonnie and Greg's screened porch became her 54 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

dining room, a decision made after analyzing which areas of the home she used most and what spaces could be repurposed in a manner that would make the most use of every square foot. The team also strove to improve the energy-efficiency of the home by adding on demand water heating, closed cell insulation, and energy efficient windows. As the project progressed, it was apparent Travis and Bonnie had developed an easy, affable rapport. "Bonnie was so great! I could give her decisions to make and she would make them immediately, and she really has impeccable design taste," states Travis. "She and I collaborated on the design of the home." Working together, they managed to transform her quaint beach abode— originally built as a Sears and Roebuck kit house—into a contemporary cottage that is efficient, functional, and chic. v For more information, contact C & T Enterprises, LLC at (843) 577-7268 or visit cntenterprisesllc.com

To ensure all three garage doors matched, Mike Cardarelle and team added faux transom windows to the door on the far right, which was originally two feet shorter than the others.

a garage door designed to fit Overhead Door Company of Charleston comes up with a custom solution to a Kiawah home's garage door conundrum

W

hen it came time to choose garage doors for this Kiawah Island residence, it wasn't quite as simple as picking them out of a catalog. To maintain consistency and aesthetics of the home's exterior facade, all of the garage doors needed to look alike and present a uniform appearance...even though one of the doors was actually 2 feet smaller than the others. Overhead Door Company of Charleston rose to the challenge, submitting a copy of the door plans to the wood door company who creates shop drawings of the garage doors. "When the time comes to order the doors," explains Overhead Door's Mike Cardarelle, "we do a field check with the contractor to gather final dimensions." 56 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

With final dimensions in hand for the Kiawah Island home, Mike and his team were able to solidify their plans for installing the doors in a manner that would solve the conundrum of the smaller door. Through a string of discussions and brainstorming sessions, the team determined the most attractive option. Elaborates Mike, "To create a consistent look with the other garage doors, we built a faux transom window to go over the smaller door. This not only adds visual height to the door to match the stature of the others, but it is also a nice architectural detail." v For more information, contact the Overhead Door Company of Charleston at (843) 767-0028.

hen the Hancock family found their dream lot to build on in the Briar's Creek development on Johns Island, they knew they wanted their home to reflect the pristine surroundings it would be nestled in. With the lush Briar's Creek golf course on one side, expansive views of the marsh and sound in the front, and a winding creek covered by a canopy of trees in the back, the lot offered abundant natural beauty. Settling on the vision of "a very chic treehouse," the homeowners opted for an exterior of wood products to create an elegant organic appearance. Mt. interior, suggested the Hancocks call local company Liberty Cedar for all their exterior wood needs. New to the area at the time, the crew at Liberty Cedar was excited about the potential opportunity to provide the products they know best. "There were a lot of people bidding on the job," states Liberty Cedar's Russ Fogg, "and Woody [Hancock, homeowner] was the first person down here to give us a shot. Once we started supplying the decking and he saw what kind of product we could offer, he started having us bid on everything." Liberty Cedar ended up providing virtually everything on the home's exterior, with the exception of the roof. Cedar wall

shingles cover the home's facade. All of the decking is IPE, and every single piece of railing, all of the balusters and brackets, and much of the trim is vertical grain Western red cedar—the ideal product choice for this application, according to Liberty Cedar's owner Joe Davies: "A lot of the builders around here use pressure treated wood and have someone come in and caulk it and paint it. Woody actually invested in the right material by choosing the natural cedar." The only brackets the company did not supply were, in fact, the brackets on the very top of the house that didn't need to be Western red cedar. As for the Hancocks, they were so impressed with the quality of work and the aesthetic appeal of the natural wood supplied by Liberty Cedar that they enlisted the company to supply a bevy of wood products to outfit the home's interior as well. A project over two years in the making, the cedar-shingled home is a point of personal pride for the crew at Liberty Cedar. Smiles Russ, "We’ve been anticipating the completion of this project for quite some time because we are so excited to show people what a difference quality wood products can make—and this home couldn't be a better testament to that." v For more information, contact Liberty Cedar at (843) 744-0450 or visit libertycedar.com.

renovate your cabinets– or install new ones? The husband and wife team behind Sullivan Custom Cabinets, Kenneth and Tracy Sullivan square off over the pros and cons of refacing/renovating existing cabinets versus tearing out and installing new ones.

Considering Your Budget She Said: Costs to reface cabinets can be half of new cabinet construction. There comes a point when new construction should be considered, but there are great refacing options that give a completely new look to an existing kitchen or bath. He Said: Cabinets for new kitchens and baths can be either budget friendly or expensive. Having a wide variety of material

choices, and the fact that we manufacture our cabinets in our own facility, allows us to work within a wide range of budgets.

#2

Increasing Utility

She Said: Simply changing hardware, painting, adding trim, or doing new doors and drawers will have a huge impact on the appearance of a tired kitchen or bath. You can also increase utility by adding functional components or modifying existing cabinetry, as well as changing out countertops and fixtures. He Said: It’s a great feeling to bring enjoyment back into a home with a new kitchen or bath. Imagine bringing a family together more often for dinner because they love the look and feel of their new kitchen, or imagine the relaxation of a beautiful new bathroom!

#3

Maintaining the Existing Charm of a Home

She Said: It’s important to continue a similar flow of design throughout a home. Why would you want a beaming contemporary kitchen in a cozy historical home? 62 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

Tracy and Kenneth Sullivan in their North Charleston showroom

He Said: Update, update, update! Whether you want something simple and charming or something contemporary and elaborate, new cabinets can be custom created to blend with the feel of a home.

#4

Keeping it Green

She Said: Why fill up a landfill if your cabinet structure is strong and just needs a facelift? Reusing the framework and simply changing the cosmetic exterior of cabinets is a very earth friendly way of updating your space. He Said: Sometimes projects need to be completely redone for structural or utility purposes. Plus, there are a wide variety of materials for countertops that are made of recycled materials and are environmentally-friendly.

Conclusion: We both agree that kitchens and baths sell houses and increase home values; cabinet renovations in these rooms—whether updating existing cabinetry or replacing it with new custom cabinetry—will bring a good return on investment. Dollars spent in kitchens and baths are dollars earned. the art of living Tiny toes, tan from the summer sun, dangle over the edge of the dock as Betty Anglin Smith’s fresh-faced granddaughters toss crab lines into the brackish water below. A smile stretches across Betty’s face as she helps Hadley, the youngest of the girls, slowly pull in a line laced with raw chicken-neck. With large tongues lolling, family dogs Coleman and Chambi sloppily sniff a piece of the poultry as they pace around the perimeter of the bait pail. Although a salty breeze sweeps across the marsh, it offers little respite from the unforgiving humidity, and clothes begin to cling to moist skin. “Y’all ready for some watermelon?” Betty drawls to her giggling granddaughters, who drop their lines into a five gallon bucket as they scurry to find the hands of their parents. Three generations of family then fall in a slapdash line as they make their way back down the dock towards the porch of the charming marshfront cottage. by JULIE SPRANKLES • photography by MICHAEL COSTA

As Betty serves up the sticky sweet refreshment of ripe watermelon, you get the sense her family sees the slices as another extension of the matriarch’s artwork. One of Charleston’s most beloved creative souls, Betty has been coloring the Lowcountry with her lush, vibrantly-hued landscape canvases for over thirty years. Catching up with the artist at her coastal haven, it’s easy to see she lives her life much like she paints: boldly, full of color, and with spirit to spare. It’s so nice your family can all spend time together at your cottage in Meggett, "The Happy Mullet." And, speaking of your kids, let’s tackle the fact that you have triplets! What was your first reaction when you initially found out? We’d been married about five years, and my husband Cody and I just felt the time was right to start our family. When we got pregnant, I kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger, and finally I thought, I’ve got to be having twins. This was in 1972, so we didn’t have ultrasounds at the time; you waited until you were far enough along for it to be safe to have an x-ray done. I had mine one afternoon around the time I was six months along, and then I went back into the office for the day—I was working in Governor John West’s administrative offices at the time. Everybody knew I had gone in for the x-ray, and they were all expecting twins as well. I remember the doctor’s office calling and telling me over the phone I wasn’t having two babies, but rather three babies. I yelled out, “THREE!” and the whole office just went berserk. The doctors told me to quit working, go home, totally get off my feet, and relax. Well, I was too antsy and didn’t exactly follow doctor’s orders, so the 66 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

triplets ended up coming about a month or so early. Tripp, Jennifer, and Shannon were only three and ½ pounds at birth and in the hospital for a month, not being able to come home until they weighed five pounds. But they were healthy babies! Wow...two infants must be a handful; I can only imagine what it must have been like bringing up three at a time. How did you manage juggling everything? I wasn’t painting then and was enjoying my work but, at the same time, I was so ready to start a family. I think being in that mental frame is what saved me because this was something I had wanted so badly…I had

simply been blessed with a little bit more than I originally bargained for. But I had the most fun with those babies! I’d just sit on the floor all day and play with them. When the triplets were three months old, we moved from Columbia to Charleston into a little neighborhood full of other young mothers. We’d get together every day with the kids and it was such a relief to have that because, had I been isolated with no friends and no other mothers to be around, I think I would have struggled at that point. They were my support group. So you weren’t really painting when you became pregnant with the triplets, but clearly growing up surrounded by your art

made a profound impact on their early development. When exactly did you start painting? When Cody was in law school, I always liked to draw and dabble in paint. In college, I was always drawn—no pun intended!—to art appreciation classes and such. Knowing we were going to get married and he would be in law school, I realized I needed a practical job. I majored in elementary education, but only lasted about a year and a half teaching—I loved teaching but I didn't enjoy being a constant disciplinarian and having to deal with so much paperwork! So at night, when he was in law school, I would go to the college and take evening art classes for adults just for fun. When we moved here to Charleston, we used to do weekend outings around Charleston and, one weekend, we went down to the Battery where some artists were set up doing an art show. For me, it was just so exhilarating to see because I grew up in a small town in the upstate and had never even seen an artist at work. Seeing that was my epiphany… it was just a little outdoor art show, but it sparked something in me. Soon after, I found out that Gibbes [Museum of Art, on Meeting Street downtown] was offering art classes and that became my night out away. It was then I started to really get excited about art and decided I truly wanted to learn to paint.

When did you first realize this hobby of yours could possibly provide a career? When we moved to Mt. Pleasant—the kids were about four years old at that point— I discovered the Seagull Gallery in Mt. Pleasant. It was a little co-op gallery where all the budding artists in Charleston were showing…artists like Rhett Thurman, Margaret Petterson, Patsy Tidwell, Steven Jordan, and then several others who have since moved away. The gallery taught classes, so upcoming artists would go take classes, work in there a few hours a week, and sell their paintings. I sold my first little watercolor there for 15 dollars to a guy that had a car body shop up in North Charleston! But that was my first sale and I can’t tell you what that did for me…it lit a fire inside. So I took a corner of the spare bedroom in our house and made it a studio. The kids had just started kindergarten, leaving me with a block of time free where, all of sudden, I’ve got an empty house and time to myself. At first I filled that time with cleaning and running errands before I thought, Hmm, I’ve got to find something more to do with my time than this! That’s when I really became more serious about painting. The kids are 38 now, so that was about 32 years ago. I painted watercolors for 10 or 15 years and then made the transition into oils, and have been an oil painter now for the last 20 years.

(above left) An"art cart" in the studio serves as Betty's paint palette and holds her oil paints and brushes. (above right) A piece of folk art now adorning a wall on the screened porch served as inspiration for the cottage's name; the inscription on the folk art reads, "the happy mullet jumps for the pure joy of being alive." Shannon and Jennifer are both talented painters, Tripp is a sought-after photographer, and all three show their work at your gallery. Did your children go to school for the arts or was it something they started pursuing later in life? Shannon and Jennifer always showed an ability and inclination for art. We had three going to college at once so they basically had a choice of which state school they wanted to go to! Well, the girls chose Clemson and Tripp chose University of South Carolina. When the girls went off to college, Jennifer was going to major in Architecture and Shannon was going to major in Fine Arts. Since the curriculum for those programs were both pretty much the same the first year and Jennifer just fell in love with the art side of it, both the girls ended up majoring in Fine Arts. At Carolina, Tripp was majoring in Media Arts because his interest had always been photography. When the girls finished college, they were single and thinking, What are we going to do to make a living? They decided they needed more education and needed to go into specific fields, so Jennifer started pursuing art therapy and Shannon became interested in occupational therapy after experiencing it personally when she suffered a broken leg in a skiing accident. But, to make a long story short, both girls exhibited in Piccolo Spoleto the spring of their senior year and the spring after graduation and found that they could be successful exhibiting their art. After a year of further studies, they both turned back to a career in painting. Tripp, on the other hand, went directly into a job with a media studio in Charleston. A few years later, he took the summer off and traveled the country in an old Volkswagen van. He photographed as many national parks as possible and, at that point, began to seriously devote his time to photography. As the girls’ paths began to veer toward painting, was there any advice you offered them based on your own experiences? At the time, I was showing at the Wells Gallery and Bill Mayfield—the original owner of the Wells Gallery—hired Jennifer to work part time, and she started showing her work there. Shannon was painting on her own and started showing there too, 70 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

and their work just took off. Shannon was also waitressing at Station 22 Restaurant to supplement her income, so my advice to them was, “If you’re going to be serious about this and do this professionally, you need to get your work to the point of excellence that you can charge enough for it to support yourself by only painting. The most successful artists are the ones who live to paint and they do it every day. It should be the way of living a life—with a passion to paint.” As triplets and with a mother who was also an artist, I’d imagine your children each sought to carve out their own unique identity. How do their idiosyncrasies show

through in their artistic endeavors? Growing up, Tripp always made a point to be as different from the girls as he could. They were the scholars—they were the ones that made the As in school—and he was the one you had to force to study. He just never wanted to compete with them. And it’s funny because now they both paint and he went into photography, and I’ve always teased him and said, “Why don’t you paint? Aren't you curious to see if this is something you may also want to do?” And he’s so tempted. He says, “One of these days I’m just going to walk in there and do a painting.” And I say, “I’d love to see it.” He primarily focuses on architectural

photography, and black and white nature photography. With Jennifer and Shannon, they are identical twins so there is bound to be a thread of similarity in their work. But, like Tripp with his photography, Jennifer focuses mainly on architecture in her painting. Her style is a lot more detailed than, say, mine or Shannon’s; however, her sense of color is more similar to mine. Shannon is pretty much an alla prima painter and the most versatile, doing figurative to still life to landscape, and even architecture. She may push the color, but her emphasis is to capture the light. It is a gift that all three went into the arts, and I'm both thankful and amazed. On the subject of styles, your trademark look is highly recognizable…vibrantly colored landscapes—thick and bright— almost tactile on the canvas. How did you develop such a distinctive style? As I transitioned from watercolor to oil, my watercolors were getting stronger and denser in color but, when I switched to oils, my early oils were very pastel. A trip to Sante Fe, NM changed all that. Eva Carter and I had just become the best of friends—she’s an abstract painter that’s been painting in Charleston forever, and she was one of my first teachers! Eva took me out to Santa Fe where we stayed on a ranch out in the desert and I was just so blown away by the landscape: the wide open skies, the colors, the sunsets. You don’t have the humidity there like you have here, and everything there is just so sharp and clear. Going into the numerous art galleries on Canyon Road and seeing these huge, bold, colorful canvases, it just switched a light on in me. When I came back to Charleston, I started seeing that much color in the landscape here, or what I did see here, I exaggerated and pushed. Your work has clearly had a hand in inspiring your children’s creative enterprises. Are there any painters that have shaped your work in the last few years? My work is frequently characterized by the use of red underpainting, which is a technique I borrowed from the Fauves artists such as André Derain and Matisse. I'm very much attracted to works, too, of colorful, 72 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

contemporary artists such as Wolf Kahn. Closer to home, I've admired the work of William Christenberry. I saw his work recently at The Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, and was impressed with the force of his brushwork and carefree splatters or "artmarks." So I returned to the studio and began pushing my work and putting more energy in the brushstrokes. Also, seeing Brian Rutenberg's paintings at the Gibbes recently, I was awed by the thick application of paint—his work is almost three di-

I love to hit flea markets and antique shops, so I’m constantly picking things up. I don’t even worry about where something is going to go, I just pick things that I love and find a place for them when I get home. mensional. Now I am making more of an effort to build up the painting surface in my work. His work borders on abstraction, although the landscape element is there...I feel I'm moving in this direction. Now I'm studying Joan Mitchell's works; she's an expressionist painter of the New York School from the 1950s. She really "speaks" to me with her vivid hues and gestural strokes. So yes, I'm influenced, but my work is mine. I strive to have my own unique voice in my paintings. Clearly, you are passionate about what you do. What is it about painting that "speaks" so much to you?

To me, the beauty of painting is that you get to do whatever you want to do; there are no rules in painting. You can give me any rule about painting and I can show you where it can be broken and you can still have a successful painting. There is nothing more freeing than being able to walk into that studio and do whatever the heck I want to do on that canvas. Nobody is telling me how to do it; it’s all me. And that’s just great freedom. And I think that is one thing I’m enjoying about painting abstract right now—and I’m not going to give up the landscapes because I’m so in tune with this Lowcountry landscape I could never totally not paint it—but to go into that studio and be able to paint and not be confined to subject matter but let the paint start flowing and watch what unfolds…that is a whole new freedom that I am enjoying right now. At my age, I probably have 20 more years to paint and, even though it has been great, I don’t want to do the next 20 years like I’ve done the last 20. So, as an artist, you’re always searching for a new direction—something fresh, something exciting—to keep you going. You may have sold your first painting for $15 at the Seagull Gallery in Mt. Pleasant, but your work has since been shown all over the country and commands an impressive commission. What led to showcasing your work year-round in Charleston at the Smith Killian Fine Art Gallery downtown? Bill Mayfield ended up selling the Wells Gallery—where I had been showing— to Hume Killian and, at the time Hume took it over, I had been painting in our house in Mt. Pleasant in my third floor studio. But I was feeling the need to be downtown! What I did in conjunction with the Wells was to open a studio at 40 Broad Street—where Brent's Restaurant is now— and sunk a small fortune in renovating it for a studio. I had a studio there for three or four years. It was always fun and interesting, especially in meeting the public and discussing my work. The most excitement came from meeting Donald Sutherland, the actor. He was here filming for "The Hunley," and he and his wife would often come in the studio. I would lock the door and we'd

When Donald returned to Toronto, he sent me several books of their work. He also bought two of my paintings, which was a thrill. At that same time, I was showing in a number of galleries around the country. One gallery in particular was Caldwell Snyder, which had given me solo shows in New York and San Francisco. They also featured me at Trajan Gallery in Carmel and, when I went out for the opening, I was just so impressed with the space. ture my family's work. We had become sort of our own entity and were overwhelming the Wells with our work when they had a dozen other artists. So I came back and proposed the idea to Hume, asking him to be my equal partner in it, and Shannon found the perfect space at 9 Queen Street. We’re still there today, celebrating our tenth anniversary this year! Since you closed your studio on Broad Street when you opened Smith Killian Fine Art, where do you do your painting now? Well, our home has been in Mt. Pleasant for thirty something years. When the studio on Broad closed, I knew I’d have to find another place to paint but also knew

our home in Mt. Pleasant wasn’t quite the right place for it. At the same time, our family, friends, church—our life!—was in Mt. Pleasant and we just couldn’t give that up. One day a friend and contractor, Steve Brush, commissioned me to do a painting from his view in Meggett. While photographing there, I fell in love with this little overgrown cottage nearby, but the property wasn’t available at the time. In the summer of 2001, we were finally able to buy the cottage, but it was pretty brutally abandoned and hadn’t really been touched since Hugo came through. One architect who came out and looked at it told us it smelled like animals had been living in it and his recommendation was to not even touch it. But all I could see was the charm and potential it had! I knew it would be the perfect place for my studio. After 18 months of renovation led by Steve, we moved into the cottage we now call "The Happy Mullet" during the summer of 2003. Ever the artist, you obviously have the abil-

ity to see beauty in the mundane…but it sounds like the cottage was in definite need of some TLC. What sort of things did y’all do to make it livable? Oh, it was just a total renovation! The floors had collapsed in, there were holes in the roof…. This house was built in 1920 and, sometime after the 50s, there had been a small renovation and addition. Unfortunately, that renovation included unattractive 1970s style metal windows all across the back of the house, and the whole upper half of the backyard was concrete with a sunken swimming pool. When we were renovating, everything we demolished went into that swimming pool—that was our temporary landfill! But now it’s beautiful. Whereas before all you saw when you looked out there was pavement, I can look out there now and see beautiful green grass and flowering plants and trees with Spanish moss. Your studio has a breathtaking view of the yard, the dock, and the marshes beyond

where long-legged herons strike perfectly still stances as if they are posing for you. Do you do all your painting here? Yes! I know my studio’s not that big, but you’d be amazed at what you can do in there. I just finished a diptych painting that was 96-inches across—I had to set up two easels and two panels. I love to be lazy in the morning and sit in the living room, drinking coffee and reading the paper while listening to the birds in the backyard…that's how I work my way to the studio! I’ll get in there late morning or by lunchtime and usually work until about 4pm in the afternoon. Some days I’m still in there at 10pm going strong, but I typically paint around four hours a day. I’ve been listening to Van Morrison and Neil Young lately when I work, but my musical taste varies. One day it will be rock and roll and the next day I’ll turn on the spa music—you know, to calm me down! I also like country like Roy Orbison and Merle Haggard, and I really love the blues. I’m all across the board. And you

know, you get into the music and you start dancing at the easel and throwing paint and dancing a little more…and then some days you just want it perfectly quiet, and out here it is so quiet. We get wonderful sunsets here in the fall and in the winter, when it’s not as hot and humid. I have painted that western view out here so many times I can’t even tell you! I think that is what is so interesting about being out here—seeing how we’ve interpreted this landscape, because it’s been painted from so many perspectives. Your home has such a charmingly eclectic Lowcountry appeal, and the interior is peppered with furniture and accessories in pops of color and with weathered finishes. Where do you find such special pieces? We sold our home of 30 years in Snee Farm in Mt. Pleasant, and downsized from 3,700 square feet to an 1,800 square foot home in I'On, so a lot of pieces came out the house that we had. I'm an avid collector, and I love to hit flea markets and antique shops, Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010 • 75

so I’m constantly picking things up. I don’t even worry about where something is going to go, I just pick things that I love and find a place for them when I get home. So just about everything out here are things I’ve collected over the last thirty years. Also, we go up to the mountains several times a year—my sister, Lynn, has a house at Lake Lure so we’re up there a good bit—and I love to go junkin’ up there. One of my favorite places to go when we visit is the Brass Latch shop in Saluda; I’ve gotten a lot of linens and handmade country pieces from owner Susan McMasters! I love to collect old linens from the 1950s and hand-crocheted pillow cases. A lot of the furniture and accessories in the cottage have also been handed down in my family, and are from my grandmother’s house or from my mother’s house.

on the marsh, with wide open vistas. Everything I like to paint is here, right outside my studio. This cottage is so special. When we moved in, we had a "Cottage Christening" with a toast led by our dear friend—the late Honorable Mendel Davis—and with a blessing by former Mt. Pleasant mayor Harry Hallman along with all our Mt. Pleasant friends. But one of my most favorite things about this house is its ability to bring family together. When you’re out here, you’re here—everyone is so present in the moment. Even though we all live in Charleston, the whole family can gather and hang out and spend nights together and the holidays together here. We’ve been here for seven years. Through that period of time, we’ve had three grandbabies born into the family—Ellie, Perrin, and Hadley— and both of our mothers passed away. Here at the cottage, Tripp and Jessica got married, we had a big wedding party for my sister’s son Michael, we’ve had a number of oyster roasts for artists and friends, and a number of brunches and luncheons with gallery clients. There’s just been a lot of life lived here! v

To me, the beauty of painting is that you get to do whatever you want to do; there are no rules in painting.

Besides the obvious scenic beauty, which offers inspiration for your lush landscape paintings, how has this home made an impact on your life and the life of your family? This is as Lowcountry as it gets! You are right

ARCHITECTS' GALLERY of CUSTOM HOMES

78 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

uring economic lulls, people begin to examine their lives to determine any auxiliary expenses. Unfortunately, homeowners who are building or remodeling all too often decide that architects and other design professionals can be spared. It is architects, however, that help homeowners create clever designs that will maximize both the space and budget they are working with. They help to prevent costly errors and the subsequent resulting frustrations. They see solutions where the homeowner only sees dead-ends. Architects, as evidenced by this year's Architects' Gallery of Custom Homes, can take a home from average to astonishing—a feat no self-respecting homeowner would spare. Peruse the inspiring designs of some of Charleston's premier architects on the following pages to garner ideas for your own dream home. For even more inspiration, visit the Gallery's special exhibit on display August 27 - 29 at the Custom Home + Remodel Show held at Gaillard Auditorium. Presented once again in partnership with AIA Charleston and Charleston Home + Design magazine, the exhibit—which showcases hundreds of photographic explorations of homes—goes to show what architects have known all along: Great design is no accident. When you do decide to embark on a homebuilding or remodeling endeavor of your own, we urge you to consider contacting the firms whose work you see here so that you too may benefit from their extensive experience and training to achieve something extraordinary.

A Word from the President of The American Institute of Architects, Charleston Chapter

F

rom the simplicity of the Charleston single house to the comfort of a beach cottage, the existing architecture of Charleston has always set the bar very high for good residential design. In 1791, tasked with selecting an architect and builder for the home of the President in our new federal city, General George Washington crossed the Cooper River on his Southern tour and laid his eyes on Charleston for the first time, indicating that of all the Southern cities, Charleston “showed the most flair in its architecture." Later in 1792, Charleston citizens proudly rejoiced as President Washington announced that he and the Commissioners of the new federal city had selected the Charleston architect (and my 5th Great-grandfather) James Hoban, to design the White House in Washington, DC. This history lesson was my first introduction to a Charleston architect and demonstrates how, from our inception as a nation and Charleston’s creation as a city, the architects and builders of the Lowcountry have long been respected and admired for their craftsmanship. Fast forward over two hundred years, and you have Charleston Home + Design magazine setting the bar high for good design by advocating the use of quality design and building professionals, superior products and

companies, and innovative design ideas. AIA Charleston is proud to once again partner with Charleston Home + Design magazine for the 5th Annual Architects' Gallery of Custom Homes, and we applaud you for your leadership in the community and for organizing such wonderful opportunities to witness and participate in good design. With over 250 local members, and 80,000 national members, the American Institute of Architects is the voice of the architectural profession. Our members are committed to good design, sustainable solutions, and protecting your investment in your home. As architects and fellow citizens of the Lowcountry, our members recognize and thank Charleston Home + Design magazine for its relevance in the marketplace and its commitment to quality—all revolving around the beautiful place we call home. Sincerely,

Dennis Lloyd Blaschke Jr, AIA President 2010

Hilkhuijsen, AIA Builder: New Tradition Custom Homes Photographer: © Matthew Scott/ Matthew Scott Photographer, Inc. Square Footage: 7,100 sq. ft. Beds/Baths: 5 bedrooms, 6 1/2 bathrooms

The owners of this Daniel Island home-site first approached Tim S. Hilkhuijsen, AIA, with a challenge to design a custom home inspired by architect Richard Neutra’s post war and modern movement. Although set within the context of a traditional neighborhood, not surprisingly, they wanted a design uncommon to Lowcountry vernacular. The end result is an appealing and distinctive home that fits in well within its given community.

Answer: 1 story. There is more foundation and structural support. The larger roof system entails much more wood and more shingles.

Beds/Baths: 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths Originally built in 1947, this quaint cottage lacked space and livability for the new homeowner when purchased in 2007. With a family in mind, the couple determined a complete renovation was necessary to add space. The architect and builder placed emphasis on opening up the front of the house, adding a 400 square feet master suite to the back of the house and creating a wide, usable front porch.

“We rely on the expertise and quality work of Carolina Machine Finishing to improve the durability of the wood siding and trim products that we use. We use Carolina Machine Finishing to factory prime our wood on all six sides with a high quality primer. Back priming and coating the end grain of the wood protects it from moisture intrusion and reduces the incidents of peeling paint, cracks at fasteners and wood rot. It’s quality worth paying for.

Ink Architecture, LLC (843) 882-7810 inkarchitecturellc.com Project Location: Downtown Charleston Builder: Jensen Company, LLC, General Contractor Photographer: © Matt Bolt/ Charleston Home + Design magazine Square Footage: 1,920 sq. ft. (total) Beds/Baths: 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, 2 half baths (total)

When new owners purchased three townhome buildings originally built between the 1920s and 1940s—which included six very similar townhouse layouts—they began working closely with the architect to create unique and individual designs for each of the units so future owners could enjoy the individuality of their homes. Currently, two of the original six units have been renovated with designs that are distinctive to each. 55A is a traditional style, two bedroom unit, while 55B is a spacious one bedroom unit featuring cabinets, hardware, and lighting with a modern flair. To overcome the obstacle of creating green space in the limited downtown area, Ink was able to recreate a shared driveway for the owners and add individual gardens to each of the townhomes.

Located on over 300 acres of land in rural Ravenel, this home was inspired by a description in a historic book of Deal Hall Plantation. The owners wanted to utilize natural materials when possible so, in addition to reusing material from the plantation house that used to sit on the property, they cut down cypress from their own grove and personally flipped the wood 16 times to prevent mildew during the curing process.

(carriage house) Beds/Baths: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths (per unit in the main house), 2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths (carriage house) This project was a full renovation of the existing 1854 structure that made up the wooden Greek Revival main house and its brick carriage house behind. Every step was painfully taken to renovate all parts of the home. For example, the original shutters—after 160 years of paint and abuse—were taken off the main house, stripped of paint and hardware, and mended before they were reattached to the facade. great expectations Carrying on the legacy of the company’s founder, builder Jamison Howard moves Max Crosby Construction Company forward with high hopes for the future.

A

s a local attorney, Susan Wall spends long hours in the courtroom and even longer hours at her downtown office. So when she and her husband Robert—a local oncologist— came across the opportunity to build their first custom residence on Daniel Island, it was no case of conjecture that the busy legal maven craved her own refuge from the stresses of the day. After due diligence researching prominent Lowcountry builders, Susan settled assertively on Max G. Crosby Construction Company to help achieve her vision of their Daniel Island dream home. “It's certainly true that I had a definite picture of where I wanted to be at the end of the project,” says Susan. “The Max Crosby group

displayed a can-do attitude from the start; they were very positive about my vision and that they could make it happen.” Paired with Jamison Howard, one of the company’s partners, Susan and Robert embarked on their inaugural journey of building a home from scratch…a process that, as many first-time buyers or builders can attest to, can be overwhelming at best. However, fledgling Susan found comfort in the laid-back breed of confidence exhibited by Jamison. “Since it was our first time with this sort of experience, I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the process from beginning to end,” she explains. “I think that was due in large part to the fact that Jamison and his colleague Kacey were always so calm and cando. It gave me a sense of self-assurance that I was actually going to end up with what I was hoping I would end up with.” Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010 • 153

As their new home neared completion, Susan and Robert could hardly believe the project didn’t hit any major hitches along the way. Bemuses Susan, “I know so many people who have negative experiences with their builder, but we really had fun!” She continues, “I was able to be creative, and they helped me in that progression. It was just a really positive experience, and that definitely makes a difference.” At the close of the collaboration between Jamison and the Walls, each party walked away with the satisfying assertion they had achieved exactly what they wanted. “I love our new home,” exclaims Susan. “It’s kind of unexpectedly modern…I like to think of it as glamorous!” For Jamison, having a happy client that came in on time and on budget was a rewarding byproduct of the team’s hard work. The team’s success on the project would also become a reassuring reminder of the consistency and strength of the Max Crosby process, during a time of dramatic change in the company’s life. Sadly, in late 2009, the company’s founder and namesake 154 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

passed on, leaving Jamison to carry on the work of the company that native Charlestonian Max first created in the Lowcountry over 30 years earlier. “The relationship that Max and I developed had become a fatherson dynamic…we had a lot of fun, and had a good run together in the business,” says Jamison. “I’m happy to be able to carry the torch and continue to build on the foundation he put in place for the company in the way that he would want me to. It’s a great opportunity to honor him in that way.” A native of Marietta, Georgia whose father was an Atlanta architect, Jamison first met Max shortly after graduating from College of Charleston in 1996. The young alumnus was leaving at the time to go to architecture school at Savannah College of Art and Design, but his meeting with Max made a profound impact. “Someone from Coldwell Banker introduced me to Max,” smiles Jamison, “and we just kind of hit it off. finding reasons to come back to Charleston and do little jobs here and there for him.” As graduation neared, the last stretch of study remaining between Jamison and a Masters in Architecture was his thesis. It was at this time, however, that Max offered Jamison a full-time job. “I've always been interested in the whole building process, from concept to completion, so I think it was meant to be that I met Max and had this opportunity,” Jamison states, continuing, “I decided that if I wanted to give it a shot, that would be a good time to do so. It became one of the best decisions I ever made in my professional life.” Their complementary collaboration flourished and, six years ago, Max extended another opportunity to his protégé: official partnership in Max G. Crosby Construction Company. In the six years since, Max and Jamison enjoyed many successful projects—resulting in satisfied homeowners such as Susan

Wall—by adhering to the core principle of the company: building a relationship with the client. Explains Jamison, “We like to be a guiding hand throughout the entire process, where we help them with every decision along the way. We help them choose the lot, bringing their attention to things they may not have considered just riding around in the car looking at property. We help them interview architects to help them find someone in tune to the style of home they’d like to have, as well as someone who will be a good personality match for them.” During that time, the homeowner sets forth their expectations—a critical component of the Max Crosby process. “When you work so closely with the homeowner, you’re also building a great relationship for the building process,” says Jamison. “They get to know you very well and you them, so it’s a great time for everyone to develop their expectations for the process. People know from their own life that the greater the dif-

that time of the design phase, the Max Crosby team works with an interior designer or decorator, who takes the homeowner out to select things like cabinets, appliances, and tile. On working with design professionals, Jamison offers, “I think incorporating the interior decorator or interior designer during the design of the home, it really makes a difference in the end product. Having someone with that expertise walk with the homeowner into a showroom to help them make selections ties everything together,

and it makes the entire experience easier for the homeowner.” In securing selections early in the construction process, the company is able to incorporate these elements into the overall budget and overall house plans, giving the homeowner an accurate indication of the final budget. It is this dedication to quality and financial control that has played a pivotal role in the company’s steady success over the years, leading to honors such as being selected by

Southern Living magazine as a member of its Custom Home Builder Program. A charter member of the program since 1993 and member of the Board since 1994, Max Crosby Construction was subsequently tapped to build an “idea house” to be featured in the national magazine. “That was just a great opportunity and a great experience,” enthuses Jamison, “and we got to work with some really wonderful people that Southern Living chose, like Georgia-based architect Mitch Gin, local interior designer Margaret Donaldson, and local landscape artist Robert Chestnut.” The home, which became one of the most widely visited out of the idea homes Southern Living completed in the Southeast, was built in a mere six months, open to the public for five months, and sold soon after. In the course of their work with Southern Living, Max Crosby Construction made another key connection that would result in an exciting new endeavor: a collaboration with Haven Custom Homes, who had participated in Southern Living idea homes in the past. Developing out of Max Crosby Construction’s desire to offer homeowners an environmentally responsible option for building their custom home, the unique pairing of the two companies focuses on coupling the intricate details Max Crosby is known for with Haven's system build

method of custom modular homes. As the homes are built in a controlled environment where materials are continually shielded from weather, there is less site impact and less waste overall. "There is typically only 2 - 3 percent waste on the entire project with a Haven home," elaborates Jamison. Throughout the duration of construction, the Max Crosby team works with both the Haven crew and the homeowners to follow Max Crosby's interior design process and create a custom result. As the synergistic collaboration with Haven continues to develop, Jamison feels optimistic about forging into the future of the company conferred to him by his late mentor. Displaying Max's trademark team spirit, Jamison credits the company's continued growth and success—in large part— to a strong in-house support system."Max and his wife Jackie started the company together, and now Jackie and I will carry on Max's legacy," states Jamison. "Jackie is playing such a wonderful supporting role now, and I feel very fortunate to have her by my side to offer advice, to be a critic, and to simply help us move forward."v For more information, contact Max G. “I love living in Village Green with the ponds, the marsh and the sunlight. I began thinking about ways to preserve our planet and at the same time save on energy costs. I went online and found numerous sites, but one in particular caught my eye. It stated by utilizing simple, cost effective and reliable technology, I could cut my power bill by 20-30% and provide 80-90% of my water heating needs — AND that Federal Incentives and State tax credits pay for more than one-half of the combined purchase and installation costs of a solar-thermal water heating system — AND the pay-off period was 3 to 6 years - so I figured the time was right to think about letting the sun take care of my hot water needs.”

s the economy begins to pick itself up off the floor, so then do we reticent homeowners slowly start to dust off our purses and paint brushes in pursuit of our next project. Whether a do-it-yourselfer or the everyday Joe who leaves it to the pros, you most likely fall into one of two very distinct camps: those cautious souls still adhering to a shoestring budget, or those who feel confident enough at this juncture to spend a stipend of their savings splurging on a big-budget remodel. In order to better help both camps narrow down their next endeavor to embark upon, we combed the Lowcountry for ideas that make a big impact on a small budget as well as projects worthy of dipping into your rainy day fund for. On the fence about which camp you fall into? Don’t fret! Remodeling Projects: For the Recessionista

To see a resource guide of all the companies k mentioned, chec out page 182!

If You Are a

Recessionista Remodeler... If you want to add architectural interest to your home, there are many ways to improve upon your existing space. Southern Lumber & Millwork Corporation suggests exploring interior trim, such as a chair rail or crown moulding. Simple and economical, interior trim makes a big impact in spaces where you may have a limited budget. Similarly, Southern Lumber says exterior shutters are an easy way to add curb appeal, and come in many affordable styles.

New cabinets can quickly eat up half of your budget when remodeling your home. According to Bud Carpenter of Carpenter’s Antiques & Restoration, however, you can get a fresh new look in your kitchen without ripping out all of your existing cabinetry. “If you have solid color cabinets, you may want to add a glaze or just change the color,” he suggests. “If you want to alter the look even more, change the style of the doors and drawers. If the foot print of your kitchen is good, why change it? Dress up the kitchen by changing the color, painting technique, or style of the doors.” You can do all of this, Bud says, for a fraction of the cost of replacing the cabinets.

Mimicking serene spa surroundings, pebble tiles have been making a splash in the Lowcountry as of late. “Not only is this a great look,” elaborates Buckhannon Brothers Tile Showroom, “but pebble tiles are really cost-effective; they tend to run half the price of most mesh-mount mosaic tiles!” Available in many color combinations and various size options, pebble tiles can be used for walls, fireplaces, patio flooring, and shower floors.

Replacing an outdated fireplace can be costly. However, refacing your tired fireplace with custom doors can be done in one easy step, according to M & M Oil and Propane. “Each Stoll Reface Door is unique and custom-sized to fit perfectly in your fireplace's opening,” explains M & M. “Not only will the refaced doors convert your fireplace into a beautiful focal point for your room, they help eliminate drafts and reduce up to 90-percent of the heat loss up the chimney.” The doors are available in 12 louvered designs, 25 finishes, and countless custom combinations.

Budget often drives the design so, if your wallet is feeling squeezed, Tailored Closets recommends keeping it simple. “You don’t have to spend a fortune to increase your storage,” the company offers. “Adding double hanging rods and shelving can double if not triple your storage without breaking the bank.”

According to Russ Pritchard of Audio Warehouse, the lower cost options and apparatus of electronics technology are typically limiting in ability to expand or build onto. If you aren’t ready to splurge on a whole house system just yet, Russ recommends looking into technology that offers a scaled approach. This will allow you to select the proper technology to meet your expectations by starting out with key components, and subsequently following a planned upgrade path as budget allows.

Another easy way to spruce up your cabinetry without blowing your budget is to re-face cabinets. Explains Mevers Kitchens & Bath—who has experienced a recent surge in re-facing jobs—this typically involves ordering new doors, drawer fronts, moulding, and hardware while refinishing the existing cabinet boxes or bodies. You can even opt to go one step further by replacing countertops with an affordable stone product like granite or quartz, and adding a new sink and faucet. Refacing can run 25- to 50- percent less costly than a complete remodel, according to Mevers, and it reduces the downtime to refit.

Don’t rule a project off your list of renovations because you think it has to be done all at once. For example, if you want to update your living room on a budget, Annette Ellard of Creative Cotton Company suggests doing so in stages. “Repainting a room in a complementary color instead of just boring off-white can make a tremendous difference,” she states. “Just remember that you need a plan for the whole room to follow; repainting is just one step in the process.” Your best bet for establishing and following a well-executed room plan is to consult with a professional who can give you sound advice on which phase of the room plan to tackle first, as well as tips on where to spend and where to save.

If you want to punch up the pizzazz of your countertops, shop smart using one of the industry’s best kept secrets…remnant stone! Smaller pieces of large stone slabs like marble and granite, remnant stone—says Lowcountry Tile Contractors—can be used to change up the look and add value to countertops, vanities, and even fireplace surrounds.

Everyone knows that bargain hunting is a great way to cut cost corners, and few places have as many steals and deals as Sea Island Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore off Maybank Highway on Johns Island. Case in point? New bath sinks featuring hand glazing, firing, and cute coastal designs by local artist Susan Walters of Palmetto Pottery. At $150 dollars, they are far less expensive than many vessel sinks on the market (plus, they're custom)! 164 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

While architectural enhancements to your home certainly add depth and beauty, an alternative option for adding more character to a space is with aged architectural panels from A World Apart. Used as decorative wall pieces or even headboards, they add dimension like moulding or wainscoting with less work (and money!). Besides, unlike moulding, you can simply take them down or switch them out when you crave a change.

If you’re yearning for the warmth of hardwood floors, try installing factory-

brunettes,

finished solid hardwood flooring in your home. According to Carpet Baggers Floorcoverings, not only does it cost less than traditional sand and finish hardwood flooring, but you don’t have to bother with the hassle of leaving your house for extended periods while the flooring is being finished. You can stay in your home when factory-finished hardwood flooring is installed, and it even takes 20-percent less time. Not ready for a whole house hardwood overhaul? You can install factory-finished hardwood flooring in as little as one room at a time, meaning you can tackle additional rooms whenever your budget permits.

When it comes to your cabinets, another cost-cutting option is to consider alternative frame styles. “European style cabinetry that does not use the old-fashioned face frames is more efficient to produce and typically a better value,” explains HWC Cabinetry, “It is also more ‘green,’ as it doesn’t require the use of as much old-growth timber in the construction of the cabinet.”

You would love to upgrade those bland bi-fold doors to the laundry room with something more upscale, but it’s just not in the budget. Before resigning yourself to a boring fate of bi-folds, think creatively. Local artist Janie Atkinson can paint vivid trompe l-oeil paintings to disguise virtually any door.

Ask any designer and they will tell you a universal truth of home decor is this: rugs are an easy way to amp up the style in any space. Rugs are also a fantastic way to add a splash of color to an otherwise neutral design palette. Our pick? This Paula Deen Home & Porch collection rug from Rug Decor...less than $300 for the 5- by 7- foot size!

Bedrooms often get the short end of the stick when it comes time to divvy up remodeling dollars. If your bedroom likewise gets left off the list of room transformations, Rick's Lighting proposes using strategically picked and placed light fixtures to bring drama to your boudoir. We love how this large Arabesque pendant light by Murray Feiss (available through Rick's) presents an upscale alternative to the traditional nightstand lamp, and the way it casts soft swirling shadows on the wall.

If your landscaping looks lifeless but you lack the funds to totally transform it, consider an affordable consult with DIG Landscape. They can help you come up with ideas for reviving your yard or garden, or they can create a full scale design you can implement over time. To make sure you have everything to achieve the vision behind your full scale design, they will provide you with in-depth information such as a detailed plant list, pictures of plants, and potting instructions. They can even design it to incorporate elements you can install yourself when budget permits. Textiles offer one of the most affordable and easiest ways to “remodel” without all the heavy lifting. By reupholstering furniture or throw pillows, you can completely update a space with a fresh new feel. That’s not to say fabric can’t get expensive, but the fun fabric shown here from Not Just Fabrics is high on style and low on price—less than $20 per yard!

Remodeling Projects: For the Recessionista

If you change nothing else about your existing cabinetry when remodeling, change the decorative hardware. It is such a simple notion, but one that can change the entire feel of your kitchen or bath. For example, the addition of woven wicker Atlas Hamptons collection hardware from Bird Decorative Hardware injects this otherwise traditional bathroom with a Lowcountry plantation appeal.

According to Alan Wheeler of Coastal Design Builders, “There is one overriding key for a budget-friendly (aka getting the biggest bang for your buck) project to work: your advocate—your remodeler, builder, or designer—for pulling all project elements together." For the collaboration to be successful and cost-effective, Alan says your advocate must: listen well to what you want, offer cost saving design/construction tips, introduce you to vendors and suppliers that will serve you well and help with competitive pricing, give you a written schedule with "decision dates," and educate you to the remodeling/building process to help alleviate your fears.

When looking at designing your sunroom you can ask your contractor to give you good, better, and best options. For example, explains Express Sunrooms, if you are discussing the roofline, a good option would be a studio style roof that attaches to the house wall. A better option would be a gable roof that attaches to the house wall. The best option would be a gable roof that attaches to the wall or house with a cricket to help blend better. Somewhere in the options, you can find something that suits both your style and budget. Plus, a lot of companies like Express Sunrooms are now offering 6 or 12 month same-as-cash no interest, no payment options so you can get your project done now and pay later.

Jumpstart your kitchen's style quota by adding a decorative tile backsplash from Palmetto Tile Distributors. There are myriad options available for creating a unique installation so, even if you can't start from scratch with your kitchen, you can give it a glam new look for a fraction of the cost of a complete overhaul.

If you have carpet in your home that is looking a bit lackluster but you simply can't afford to upgrade, having your existing carpet cleaned can bring it back from the brink. The professionals at Steamatic utilize a patented hot-water extraction system, commonly referred to as "steam" cleaning, to remove embedded dirt and bacteria without soap chemicals.

Duval Acker, interior designer and owner of Kitchens By Design, Inc., advises always choosing the “standard” colors, woods, and finishes available when purchasing cabinetry, and then making the cabinetry special in other ways or dressing it up when you have a bigger budget. Another clever option the designer offers for budget-conscious consumers is looking for discontinued products—which are often discounted—as possibilities for special accents like light fixtures, hardware, tile, and even appliances. 168 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

If You Have the

Urge to Splurge...

With the advancement of technology, the world of windows has grown leaps and bounds. The windows of today are far safer and much more energy-efficient than the windows available to homeowners even five years ago. Undertaking window replacement for your entire home may seem daunting but, when you consider the money you’ll save by increasing your home’s energy efficiency, Southern Lumber & Millwork Corporation—who carries leading brands like Marvin and Andersen—says it’s a no-brainer. Plus, if you purchase qualifying energy efficient windows, you can enjoy a $1500 tax credit on your next return. There are times when existing cabinets in a home are in such poor condition that not even a simple reface or paint job can save their style. At which point, a complete remodel is a wise move. “Many bathrooms need new floors, lighting, paint, cabinets, a better layout, countertops, and appliances,” explains Billy Mevers of Mevers Kitchen & Bath. “So the extra money spent on new cabinets becomes a small part of the overall project, and the additional expenditure is well worth the money to make your kitchen completely state of the art.” Still not sure? Consider this: The National Kitchen and Bath Association states that, on average, a full remodel gives you an 85-percent return on your investment!

Extend your outdoor enjoyment by replacing your old weathered deck with a large new deck. There are so many options in decking now—from decks made of recycled materials to solid wood weather treated decks—so you don’t have to settle for sub-par, suggests Southern Lumber & Millwork Corporation. We particularly like their Trex decking; it’s eco-friendly, looks great, and will last for many years of backyard barbecues, star-gazing, and other leisure activities.

Remodeling Projects: The Urge to Splurge

Buying or building a home in a down economy has proven in the past to be a sound investment. “Buying low is key,” says Southeastern Custom Homes. “But as the buyer weighs in on this decision, they must consider all the advantages ahead of time in order to maximize the investment.” Advantages to building a home now include low interest rates for those who qualify, less resistance from permit departments, availability of qualified professionals such as architects and designers, tax incentives for energy efficient products, and lower labor costs. To ensure you get the home of your dreams, Southeastern Custom Homes suggests insisting from your builder multiple bids for each cost backed up by proposals that match your architect’s specifications.

By investing in a solar water heater, you can eliminate up to 30-percent of your electric bill and qualify for a reduced rate from SCE&G. Making the transition from traditional to solar may be a splurge now, but will substantially reduce your electric bill and could pay for itself within 3 - 5 years, according to Solar Hot Water Works!

Buy functional colonial or Bahama shutters to liven up your home, which give dimension and contrast to the exterior of your house. “Curb appeal is instantaneous with the installation,” states Tim Smith of Windward Shutters, “and they are available in impact rated styles that meet strict International Building Codes.” 172 • Charleston Home + Design • Fall 2010

More than ever, people are opting to plunk down their remodeling dollars on an outoor space with a fully operational outdoor kitchen. Carolina Kitchens of Charleston can create them full equipped with a refrigerator, built in gas grill, ice maker, and sink, so your outdoor space is a functional extension of your indoor space.

If you are interested in increasing the energy efficiency of your home, consider this for a moment: your air conditioning system, including the duct work, accounts for about 56-percent of your home’s total power bill! Solution? Installing a system that is twice as efficient as the one you have, says Myatt & Bates, would reduce your overall power consumption by 25-percent. But it needs to be done the right way…duct work and all. Myatt & Bates explains, "If an extremely efficient system is installed on a poor duct system, then the efficiency of the new system is lowered in proportion to the percentage of leakage of the old duct system."

The backyard is often a great untapped resource. Since many of us are spending our vacations close to home these days, turning a tired lawn into an outdoor oasis is both fun and practical. Enlisting the services of a professional landscape architect like Remark will ensure a cohesive design that provides both function and innovation to your new outdoor living space.

Although you will be spending more money upfront, investing in a gas tankless water heater will considerably reduce your yearly energy costs. Explains John Blitch III, owner of Blitch Plumbing, "These units are much more efficient to operate when compared to a traditional type gas or electric water heater, in that they require very little power—only what is needed to ignite the heater—and there isn’t a constant usage of gas or electricity to keep the water inside the tank at a certain temperature.” Bonus? There is currently a credit being offered that allows homeowners who purchase tankless systems to deduct 30 percent of total installation cost from their 2010 tax return.

If you spend your renovation dollars on a new bath, says Sullivan Custom Cabinets, you are sure to see a high return on your investment. “Kitchens and baths sell houses, increase property values, and make for easy living,” the company explains. When undertaking your big bathroom renovation, make sure your expectations and desires are clear upfront; bring along pictures of bathrooms and bathroom products you like when meeting with your architect, builder, and interior designer. A bathroom overhaul is a big—but oh-soworthy- investment…it pays to make sure you get exactly what you want!

Splurging on custom draperies can make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of a space. “The fabric,” explains Annette Ellard of Creative Cotton Company, “doesn’t have to be super expensive, but having them professionally made does pay off.” Energy savings are another pleasant perk of these window treatments; they block sun in the summer and hold in heat during the winter.

For homeowners ready to remodel their closet space, details can make a big difference. Spending a little more money on the extras goes a long way towards creating a space you’ll want to spend your spare time playing dress-up in. “Consumers love to accessorize,” enthuses Tailored Closets. “A pull-out mirror, ironing board, and laundry hamper are just a few accessories that can add convenience, style, and function to your closet. Closet accessories are like jewelry to an outfit, it gives the ‘wow factor’ to an already beautiful design."

One of the most popular gutter systems on the market, LeafGuard gutters by Englert need little introduction. Purchasing these now—the only one-piece covered gutter system in the country—seems a small price to pay for a lifetime free of scooping and scraping clogged gutters.

You've undoubtedly heard

Did you know that bathroom exhaust fans are the second leading cause of house fires? Don't feel bad; we didn't either! Which is why it makes sense to invest in a professional assessment of your home's electrical hazards; pinpointing these now can save you from devastating fire damage in the future. CurrentSAFE Electrical Fire Protection uses state-of-theart diagnostic and testing methods, such as infrared thermographic images, to determine these hazards before they threaten your home.

mention of a Coastal Mister Misting System from Palmetto Mosquito Control on the pages of CH+D in the past. The reason is simple: It works! With precisely measured and time released bursts of non-toxic insect repellent, the Coastal Mister just takes the guess work out of keeping your yard guarded against those pesky suckers.

If you've got a great patio or outdoor space but rarely take the time to enjoy it, it may be time to invest in some high quality outdoor furniture that will lure you into more leisure outdoor lounging. Teak furniture from the Teak Hut is durable, weather-proof, and ultra-attractive.

Remodeling Projects: The Urge to Splurge

If you are really ready to splurge, try tackling your entire home as opposed to a specific space like the kitchen or bath. Okay, take a deep breath. Renovation Solutions, who has over two decades of local experience with expansive projects, can take the dream of a whole-house remodel from daunting to doable.

Living on the coast, virtually all new construction is elevated—especially flood-prone areas like downtown and the beaches. Since it's no fun lugging kids, bags of groceries, or whatever else your arms are full with up a flight or more of stairs, investing in an elevator from Colson Elevators just makes sense. No more juggling and struggling while you climb those stairs; you'll just have to find another way to get your cardio workout in for the day.

Instead of traditional paint for the exterior of your home— which has to be repainted periodically—consider going with TexCote textured coating from PermaCoat of Charleston. Guaranteed not to chip, flake, or peel, the innovative product ensures worrying about your home's exterior is a thing of the past.

There are many advantages to solar control window films that make them a wise avenue for your remodeling bucks. One very good reason? Solar control window films from Solar Reflection offer 99-percent UV protection, eliminating furniture fading and— more importantly—your family's exposure to dangerous rays.

"There's not really one, single food item I could pick out, but the highlight of every Fall for me has to be Thanksgiving Day. Not only do I look forward to the wonderful dinner, but also to having a relaxing day with friends and family. Anytime we have an opportunity to be together with those we care about the most, it's very special." College of Charleston graduate and New York Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner, who currently ranks 5th in the AL in stolen bases and 7th in on-base percentage
