MEET + GREET

Making a Splash Owner of Heritage Pools, LLC, Michael Gesmond, opened the doors to his James Island home and shared the story of his life in the Lowcountry and history in the pool industry.

How did you get started in the pool business? The first time I was ever introduced to a pool was riding with my dad on an excavator when I was eight. I’ve been building pools ever since. I never thought I would choose this career path, but here I am in the industry and I've been able to build all kinds of pools throughout the years. Tell me a little bit about you and your family. I am married to my wife Jessie, who is a nurse practitioner, and we just celebrated our second wedding anniversary. I actually met her 12 years ago after I made one of my first pool sales. We have two awesome golden retrievers, Maddie and Sulley. We enjoy doing CrossFit together, traveling, cooking out, and spending time in our backyard by the pool with our family and friends. How did Heritage Pools, LLC first get off of the ground? I was 18 when I moved to Charleston and I had just started Heritage Pools with the few meager supplies I had brought with me. I was using the closet in my apartment for my first 'warehouse' and from there I rented two public storage units. Af ter I bought my house, I started working out of the shed in my backyard and then I f inally purchased a property with a 2,000

58

CH+D • Summer 2017

square foot warehouse and an office building. At that point, I had found the core members of my team who are still with me today. How did the I-Beam Brace technology that Heritage Pools, LLC uses start? The I-Beam Brace is from my “pool dad” and he created it in 1984. We are the premier company utilizing the technology and we are the only ones that can use it in South Carolina. He invented it because of the problems he was having with the ground freezing and thawing up where he lives in New York. We brought it down here because of the unstable ground issues that are commonly found in the Lowcountry. Since your business only does custom work for new pools, what trends are you seeing that people are looking for? Yes, every pool is completely custom, from the surfaces that we install, to the design, and all of the components really. Right now, we are seeing a lot of cool things, but one of the biggest is the shapes of the pools. We are doing a lot of really neat designs and that is a lot of fun! For more information, call Heritage Pools, LLC at (843) 762-3417 or visit swimhere.com.

HE SAID / SHE SAID

Taking Sides in New Design Trends Despite their different design styles, JacksonBuilt Custom Home’s Richard Jackson and Allison Casper work together to create beautiful homes throughout the Lowcountry.

He Said:

She Said:

He Said: Shiplap has been a popular detail for a number of years, but I feel it is overused. The push now is to use different trim profiles, with mixed textures and colors. The trend of less is more will continue to evolve with the reduction of crown moldings and increased use of square elements. He Said: Front porch living is one of the most underused “rooms” of a home. We are seeing a return to larger front porches that address the street and neighbors. Porches that once were 6-8’ deep have become 10’+ allowing for full dining tables.

He Said: I lean more towards the bronze and silver or stainless colors. I am still scarred by the 90’s polished brass, so I am slowly warming up to the new gold trend.

60

Shiplap or Other Wall Treatment?

Emphasis on Front Porch or Back Porch?

Mixing Metals or One Uniform Finish?

She Said: Shiplap is always a great look but has become so commonplace. Lately we’ve been incorporating more unique wall treatments to help differentiate each home.

She Said: While curb appeal is important, I feel the back of the home is where you’ll do most of your outdoor living. Invest in the porch that captures the best views and where you’ll spend the most time entertaining.

She Said: I love mixing metals! Combining the gold, polished nickel, and bronze tones gives you more flexibility in all aspects of design for your home.

YOUR MONEY'S WORTH

Examining the Benefits of LED Lighting Today, modern lighting is moving away from the heat-producing incandescent bulbs of Thomas Edison’s original design, to a newer and longer-lasting technology called LED. Though we often take this technology for granted, a home’s lighting system can exacerbate or save homeowners’ wallets through the years.

Energy Efficiency

Simply put, LEDs are light-emitting diodes that are based on a semiconductor technology (compared to incandescent bulbs, which produce light via gas). When this method of light production was f irst discovered in the 1960s, they were expensive to produce. Since then, the uses for LEDs have broadened into common household locations. The “bulbs” don’t get particularly hot, which means LED lighting is able to use light and energy more efficiently in many applications.

Trusted Durability

Have you ever dropped a light bulb only to have to carefully locate every delicate, yet razor sharp piece that shattered in every direction? Well, not only are LEDs made of smaller, and denser material, but the design and shape of an LED makes it even more robust and durable. The lifespan of an LED bulb is also a huge factor in saving energy, resources, and your bank account. LEDS can last five times longer than any other comparable bulb on the market.

Flexible Style Options

LEDs are “directional” light sources, which means they emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs, which emit light and heat in all directions. For this reason, some sophisticated engineering is needed to produce an LED bulb that shines light all around for everyday, household purposes. This accounts for why some LED options initially cost a bit more than traditional fluorescent or incandescent bulbs. It also means that LED bulbs can come in all shapes and sizes to accent any design or personal style.

For more information, call Aamsco Lighting at (843) 278-0000 or visit aamsco.com.

HIDDEN TREASURE

Enchanting Elevenses As one of the world’s oldest and most widespread culinary traditions, the consumption of tea thrives to this day. Whether your taste (or historical interest) lies in the artifacts from the discovery of drinkable green tea in China during the third millennium BC, the popularization of black teas in western civilization by King Charles II, or the tea that fueled the American Revolution, one irrefutable fact remains: there is an antique tea cup or teapot from at least one era that can fill your Lowcountry kitchen with joy and your collection with class.

HOMEWORK

~

At Home with

~

At Home with Betsy & Kevin Kalman of Kalman Construction When building their most recent home, Betsy and Kevin Kalman, of Kalman Construction, kept more than just fine finishes and square footage in the forefront of their minds; for their abode, they wanted to create a functional and enjoyable space to be used by family and friends of all ages. By combining their expertise in the worlds of homebuilding and decorating with their love of travel, the duo was able to see their dream design come

1

Since pools have always been a big hit in their homes, the two wanted to ensure that they had a nice one at this residence. This go-round, they wanted to have a pool that the adults and the tiny tots could safely enjoy. The Kalmans utilized deck space wisely and placed fun turtle details on the steps to entertain the kids playing on the shallow steps.

2

The Kalman’s guests have a wide range of ages and mobility levels, so they opted to install an elevator to make sure everybody would be able to enjoy their newest Lowcountry home. Throughout the home, including the inside of the elevator, visitors will find artwork and touches of coastal chic flair.

3

A lot of planning went into this kitchen; to save space and maximize the opportunities for interactions, the couple opted for an open, galley style layout. Kevin, being the main chef in the family, wanted a space to cook in that still allowed him to be part of the group activities. Betsy put her touch on the room by designing and installing a glass mosaic featuring striped bass. Planning also went into the glass pendant lighting that the pair picked up while traveling in Venice.

4

To help make their home more accommodating for their six grandchildren, Betsy and Kevin installed a booth-style banquette into their kitchen. The adults can hang out at the kitchen island or in the dining area while the kids can enjoy their own easy-to-clean and cute eating space. For more information, call Kalman Construction at (843) 856-0515 or visit kalmanconstruction.com.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

The Craftsmen:

James Geiger & the Team at J Geiger Shading Technology

The Craft:

J Geiger Shading Technology created a unique, modern shading system with a revolutionary concept. Each handcrafted shade is custom created and fascia free; there is no need for hardware that can detract from a room’s overall look.

The Backstory:

While working on a large installation for a home for his previous company, High End Audio Visual Integration (HEAVI), James realized the custom fabricated window brackets and shading system he created were products that the market needed and that he could manufacture them many times over all throughout the world. After seeing how lucrative this facet of his business and skill set could be, he shifted gears. By 2011, J Geiger Shading Technology was operating out of James’s home, which also doubles as a showroom and the manufacturing site. Several years before starting this most recent business, James and his wife purchased their East Bay Street home anticipating living on the second floor and having his HEAVI storefront on the first floor. The location was deemed great for business and for their lifestyle. Since then, the couple, and now their two children as well, still call this location home and the first floor has been turned into a fine-tuned and squeakyclean manufacturing and design center for J Geiger Shading Technology.

he search for the best countertop material can be long and daunting when faced with choices ranging from wooden butcher block, metallic copper, or natural stones like marble, granite, and quartzite. But homeowners aren’t limited to completely organic materials. Engineered quartz is a man-made product created from about 90 percent natural quartz that is ground and mixed with resins and pigments, which are then combined into non-porous and extremely durable slabs. A VICOSTONE quartz slab takes sustainability a step further, in that it is GreenGuard certified to be free of volatile organic compounds and is microbial resistant. This means that the counter’s nonporous surface also prevents mold growth as well as avoids using non-renewable resources, like natural stone slabs. For those green-minded homeowners out there, engineered quartz could be the choice for keeping your family healthy and maintaining your peace of mind. ASK THE EXPERTS

Chuck Altschul

Lowcountry Hurricane Protection & Shutters

Beyond the first step of installing protective shutters, what should homeowners do to stay ready for when bad weather hits? One key way to stay ready is to do a fire drill of sorts; pick a day when the weather is nice and put up a couple of panels or close a few Bahamas so you can remember how to do these things. During this time, make sure you know where the hardware and the storm bars are located and be sure that everybody knows how to go through this storm preparation process. We want to reinforce this concept after the installations are complete. Another thing is make sure you’re operating your roll down shutters; don’t worry about ‘saving the motor’ because the best thing for the motor is to operate it about once a month. This is good for the shutter and it makes sure that your tracks stay clear. After Hurricane Matthew, it was a real eye opener for us, as well as some of our customers. For more information, call Lowcountry Hurricane Protection & Shutters at (843) 822-5519 or visit lowcountryshutters.com.

Nick Popovich DIG Landscape

When somebody is looking to establish or redo the landscaping in his or her yard, the first step is, or should be, a plan. That is something that DIG Landscape can help homeowners with, correct? We like to because it is a good way to think about the process and make wise decisions and, if necessary, to phase a project over time. This gives a homeowner a concrete direction to take if they wish to tackle their yard on their own. Our goal is to make sure every dollar spent is a well spent dollar. A plan is necessary because if you think about it, a builder doesn’t just show up to a jobsite and say, ‘Hey! Let’s start building a house today,’ and homeowners shouldn’t just go to a big box store and leave everything up to happenstance. With the plan, we try to get to know our clients as best as possible so we can walk in their shoes and know where their kids like to run or adapt for a dog that likes to dig up things. Building Blocks

Company: Alair Homes Credentials: Daniel Peek began his career as a builder at a young age. Since 2001, he has built innumerable homes for homeowners across the Lowcountry with Alair Homes.

What are some of your favorite elements of this home? The way the shiplap and brick on the fireplace complement each other is one of my favorite aspects. The homeowner was really excited about that accent, and her energy was contagious. The client had a strong background in design and is a photographer, so her color choices really heightened the coastal style she was trying to create. Another of my favorite elements of the house is the way that the architecture and the décor all flow together to create a cohesive, coastal-style home that is beautiful, comfortable, and efficient all at once.

What makes working with Alair Homes unique? We ask our clients questions in order to get to know each one. We want to know why they are building and how they will use each space so that we can frame all decisions from that vantage point. Our process combines certainty with timeliness and budget, but we work with people because we care about them and the lives they will live in their home. As the project manager for this home, I worked closely with the homeowner to design the home. Initially, we drew it out on a napkin! From there, we took those plans to an architect and worked closely with him to transform the homeowner’s dreams into reality.

What advice do you have for homeowners seeking to build a custom home? Find someone you know, like, and trust. Get comfortable with them. Do you like them? Do they understand you? Do they truly know what you want and how to help you accomplish it? It is a relationship and it needs to "fit" on both sides in order to make the building process move forward as smoothly as possible. Architects + Archetypes

Company: Herlong Architects Credentials: A native South Carolinian and a graduate of Clemson University, Steve began his architectural practice in 1986 with the formation of Herlong Architects. Prior to founding his firm, he began his career working for an award-winning commercial architecture firm before later serving as president of a successful design-build firm focused on custom homes. Steve’s architectural practice has grown to include a talented team of architects and interior designers.

Why was it important for the homeowners to hire an architect? These homeowners had a very particular vision for their dream home; they wanted to recreate the famous antebellum mansion in the 80’s movie, The Big Chill, but needed an architect to design a version suitable for an oceanfront lot on Isle of Palms. So all aspects of the architecture and interior design, from material selection to the style of French door, had to feel authentic but also function for life on the beach.

What are some of your favorite design elements of this home? The two-story, wrap-around porches are great. All of the outdoor space, like the covered porches and the pool area, is comprised of 4,700 square feet, which is almost as large as the interior heated areas that are 4,720 square feet. The porches are nice and deep providing both shade and ocean breeze. The second floor bunk room is also another favorite feature of mine.

What were some of the homeowners’ requests for this project? As previously mentioned, the homeowners wanted to use the home from The Big Chill as the inspiration, but they still wanted it to look like it fit in with the Charleston aesthetic. They also wanted to utilize the breeze and maximize the views with porches that had a style that imparts character. For more information, call Herlong Architects at (843) 883-9190 or visit herlongarchitects.com.

Designer: Leigh McAlpin Company: Dwelling – Interiors & Design

How would you describe the design aesthetic of this home? This project represents a quintessential Charleston style mixed with our client's decidedly west coast leanings. A busy hub of family life, this inspiring space, is both classic and comfortable with a lively mix of vibrant color.

What are some of the key elements of this home’s design and style? The sumptuous textiles have to be one of the most important; the velvets, mohairs, leathers, suedes, and embroidered linens all work together. Next, I would have to say the color choices. Those previously mentioned textures are all done in grounding colors, such as deep, rich grays and midnight blues and are accentuated by bursts of color and a strategic intermingling of patterns.

Why was it important for the homeowner to utilize your skills for this home? This client has a keen eye for color and a true sense of fashion. She is someone who knows what she likes, but utilized my expertise to design and curate pieces, which work together in terms of style and scale. Together, we worked to incorporate invigorating, style-driven elements, which give this home its unique character.

What were some of the challenges of the project and how did you overcome them? In this historic Victorian home, the open, yet connected layout of the main floor rooms presented a unique challenge. The entry, living room, dining room, sunroom, and kitchen are all individual, separate rooms, yet they are all open to each other. Enabling each of these rooms to express their own style while maintaining a consistency among them was a tall order; design decisions for one room directly impacted four other rooms as well. While each room is singular and distinctive, there are common elements in the design that connect each area and unify the entire home, creating fluid transitions from room to room. Y

ou take the good, you take the bad, you take them both, and there you have the facts of life…or so the song goes. When it comes to home renovations, especially a master closet, you “take the bad,” swap it out for the fabulous, and you have something gorgeous. Snee Farm homeowners Sara and Bill Tuorto have lived in their fair share of homes—three on this very street—and have mastered the ability to fix up a home and make it wonderful. With the help of Jeff Perkins and the team at California Closets, what was once a tiny office became a stunning, completely custom master closet, com-

plete with a fireplace, glass front doors, and expertly designed shelves, drawers, and racks. The Tuortos wanted to update their master closet with a professional system and integrate their own décor, along with some of the home’s original features. For example, the fireplace and sconces fit in with their aesthetic desires so the California Closets team built around them. Since antiquing is a hobby of theirs, some of their pieces were also blended in with this space and fit in well with the melamine and glass closet system. Throughout the process, Sara and Bill worked closely with Califonia Closets going back and forth numerous times to get the layout and plans for this space just right. “It’s not as easy as you think to plan your own dream closet. You can have inspiration, but it’s hard to know the precise details,” explains Sara. “For example, Jeff thought of things that we wouldn’t have taken into consideration like how high shelves needed to be because my husband’s pants were a certain length when they were folded.” Shelf depth, wallpaper backing, and finish colors were also part of the process.

After the final product was complete, the Tuortos loved what they saw. “I like that I can have everything out and on display and I especially like that there is a place for everything,” adds Sara. “My daughters love that my jewelry is laid out in easy-to-access drawers. My husband travels a lot and it is nice that his ties and suits can be so organized.”v For more information about California Closets call (843) 284-8828 or visit californiaclosets.com.

T

ogether, Sara Pappas Holt of Palmetto Tile Distributors and her husband, Jon, decided it was time to invest in the booming housing market in Charleston. Where did they start? Well, since Jon is a real estate agent and knows all about the housing market in the Lowcountry, it was an easy answer— downtown. From there it was just a matter of finding the right location, and find one they did. “We knew the house needed some TLC when we bought it,” explains Sara. “It was a pretty big mess before we started renovations.” The home, located in an up-andcoming neighborhood, was built in the 1920s and still had an excellent structure, so the Holts kept as much of the original home as they could. “We salvaged and saved things like the original pine and oak floors, and, specifically,

some very nice slate tiles in one of the bathrooms,” adds Jon. With seven bedrooms and four bathrooms, Sara and Jon had their work cut out for them when it came to remodeling. “The downstairs hallway bathroom was in the worst condition, I think. It had an archway over the worn-out tub, an outdated black and white tile theme, and almost no elbow room whatsoever,” describes Sara. After determining what they could keep, the next step in renovating the washrooms was to expand the overall space in each. A stand-up shower basin replaced the downstairs hallway bathroom’s old tub. Next, they expanded the shower into the space underneath the stairs to nearly double the shower

area. “The tiled walls and ceiling are done in a ‘Travertino Gray’ with the shower floor and curb in the same porcelain, but in a mosaic pattern to provide interest. It gives the wall a brick-like feel, without being overpowering,” details Sara. Another major change Jon and Sara made was to the downstairs kitchen. “The whole room needed a redesign,” Sara clarifies. “The cabinets all had a dated oak façade, so we replaced the front of the cabinetry and extended the upper cabinets to draw the eye upward and open the room a bit.” Since the fridge was also completely exposed, they encased it to maintain a cohesive style in the room. Palmetto Tile once again supplied the tile for the

In fact, Stephanie and Kara both loved the leathered granite kitchen island countertop so much that they picked

it first and then opted for a statement blue for the island cabinetry. These two features created the foundation for the surrounding bar and living room areas. Another facet that was important to the Sands was to have spaces for everyone who might visit them. “We wanted each person, young or old, who visited us to be able to retreat to their favorite corner whenever they wanted to,” Stephanie CH+D • Summer 2017

Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with companies that have a similar work ethic, drive, and performance standards proves to be another optimal route for this company to attain success. front façade. To retain the views and maximize usable floor space, James Jurey and the team at Buck Lumber pointed the homeowners in the direction of the Andersen bi-parting sliding doors for the back of the home. “For the windows, we had to go custom because of the sight lines. The homeowner was in our showroom, walked up to a window, and because he is so tall, the crossbar was right in his sight line,” explains James. “We actually went ahead and taped off where the crossbars

needed to be in order for him to be able to see his yard and use his windows comfortably.” This eye for detail and the effort to source specific items for the homeowner can be seen inside of the home as well. For example, the stair rails were created with a beech wood and treated in order to try to match the specifically requested Provenza handscraped flooring as closely as possible. The barn door at the top of the

stairs also exemplifies these qualities because it was built onsite using highend materials, like Leatherneck Hardware, in order to have a functional feature that fit the space seamlessly. In this 2,600 square foot residence, Maner was able to showcase numerous custom elements that give a nod to the Lowcountry’s signature style while blending in modern lines to keep

the whole look fresh and clean. Upon entering the home, Maner’s special touches shine in the living room and kitchen. The craftsman style trim work, like the headers on the interior doors and the baseboards, complements the shiplap treatment on the fireplace and kitchen island. The bedrooms and bathrooms illustrate the teamwork and seamless partnership between Maner and Grayhawk Homes well. For example, Maner installed the high-end, frameless shower system that comes with one of the

Grayhawk Homes packages. Since this was originally intended as a spec home, a variety of finishes were selected. “We installed the standard wire shelving in the guestrooms and guest bathroom to show potential customers what the difference is between the standard and the upgraded options seen elsewhere in the home,” explains Mary Schlagenhauser, Glass Division Manager for Maner. “In the master bedroom and in the pantry, we installed the melamine Organized Living shelving systems, which come with a lifetime guarantee.”

While creating their custom home, allowing customers to choose from a variety of options is something that both businesses feel strongly about. “When it comes to details and choices, businesses can’t group items into boxes and have people pick between packages A, B, and C. This is Charleston! You can’t put style or customers in a box,” adds Melissa Lee, of Grayhawk Homes. “We agree. If somebody wants something that you aren’t willing to offer, there is a competitor down the street who probably will. Why CH+D • Summer 2017

Tara Lipinski in Her Kiawah Home

CH+D • Summer 2017

Golden Sweetheart After becoming the youngest female in Olympic figure skating history to win gold, Tara Lipinski began putting down roots at the age of 14. Throughout this golden feature (pun intended) you’ll read about her story and see how her exciting life has influenced her home.

Story by Laura Jones | Photography by Patrick Brickman & Colin Grey Voigt

When I found out that I was going to get the chance to interview Tara Lipinski in her home, I felt a bit overwhelmed; it isn’t often that we get to sit down with childhood idols. In the 90s, sports like gymnastics and figure skating were all the rage. I remember trying to do cartwheels and spins and I would prance around my house pretending like I was one of the graceful women on television. Unfortunately, I was about as graceful as a bullfrog stuck in mud, but I didn’t care. Those powerful, hardworking, gorgeous women, seemingly doing the physically impossible in the loveliest way had me, and millions of others, captivated. I’ll never forget where I was when I watched Kerri Strug nail that final vault during the 1996 Olympics or when Tara landed gold in 1998. After becoming the youngest female figure skater champion, Tara started building her Kiawah Island home. Throughout this oceanfront abode, you’ll find parts of her life story integrated into the architecture, décor, and ambiance. Tara’s years of success on the ice paved a foundation for her to continue to grow and evolve in her career and as a woman. She and her adorable mother were kind enough to let some of the team from Charleston Home + Design magazine in to photograph this home and hear about how she went from a social butterfly child in Texas to becoming a household name all across the country.

We all know about your successful career paths, but let’s start from the beginning. Where did this journey begin for you?

hometown is or was because I trained in Detroit, Michigan for many years leading up to the Olympics and when I was 14, I came out here to Kiawah Island.

I was born in Philly and raised in south Jersey. I was a normal kid riding my bike around and playing with my friends. I kind of call that my hometown, but we traveled so much when I was a kid and we moved to Texas when I was nine. I’ve lived in Sugarland for forever, so it is a hometown as well; when I won the Olympics that was definitely my hometown. I guess I get confused on what my

I started out roller skating because back in the day that was cool and I began competing in that. It was more of a social thing and I’m not sure how I started competing in it because I remember hanging out with my little girlfriends and we’d put on shows for our moms and it was

just fun. Then, when I was six, I decided to give ice skating a try. Immediately I loved it and attempted to do both for a while, but it was just too much. I had to focus on ice skating because it just took over my life… you know, pursuing an Olympic dream takes time [laughs]. Really, I just spent the next ten years of my life skating. When did it hit you that ice skating was going to be something bigger and what was that realization like? I loved it so much when I was roller skating and ice skating because it was just a

social thing for me and so much fun that competing was really just an extra added bonus. Obviously, I began to notice how much the coaches would want to work with me and I would go to these competitions and win them all. It wasn’t until I was about nine where I was like, ‘Oh, I’m probably really good. I’m winning…a lot… that’s weird. Does it mean that maybe I could possibly make it to the Olympics?’ [laughs] Eventually though, if you’re spending that much time training, even

when you’re little, and practicing five days a week in a rink, you’re looking at other champions and watching others compete in the Olympics and you start to wonder. What went through your mind when it hit you that you were going to Nagano? It was insane. The year before I won, well three years before, I knew that it was a definite possibility, but I competed on

ice, and that’s slippery, so I never knew if I was going to slip and ruin my chances by coming in eighth or if I was going to win. Also, I was competing against one of the greatest competitors at the time, Michelle Kwan, so it wasn’t an easy route and I couldn’t just call it in. My performance had to be the best so the training was very difficult for me with always trying to up the difficulty ante just to stay on top. Those three years before Nagano were exciting; I was always the youngest, CH+D • Summer 2017

but just to be on that senior level and be around all of my icons and ice skating idols while traveling the world was the best. Then I won Nationals and Worlds when I was 14 and it began this whirlwind of craziness. That’s when it really became a strong rivalry between Michelle and I leading up to the Olympics. I knew that whether I won the Olympics or not, I was going to be an Olympian; all I could think about was getting to walk in the opening ceremony. To this day I wear my Olympic ring that you get and all of that meant so much to me. Just being an Olympian and being at both opening and closing ceremonies was so amazing. Do you have a standout memory from the Olympics? One of my favorite moments is after I

won and after all of the media events, it was probably 3 a.m. at this point, and I went to the cafeteria and Wayne Gretsky was there with all of the other hockey team members and they all started cheering! We ended up having a little ice cream party and it was just me with a ton of hockey players and Wayne Gretsky leading the way. Who were some of your idols and how does it feel to be a role model yourself ? That is so strange to hear. You don’t realize it at the time and when I look back at other athletes, like Dominique Moceanu of gymnastics. She was like an idol and we became pen pals and friends and I just admired her. Honestly, I love my sport so much so that if I’m able to pass

that passion on or encourage people to get on the ice, it is pretty cool. As for my idols, there were so many. Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Oksana Baiul are a few of them. Back then in the 90s, skating was at its peak. There was also Midori Ito and Brian Boitano. I used to go see Stars on Ice, the show that I eventually toured on. I have a picture of me in my little Blossom hat when I was eight years old getting Scott Hamilton’s autograph. It is crazy that six years later I was on that show performing with him. What was it like to transition from being an amateur to a professional? It was pretty easy. Like I mentioned before, it was the height of the figure skating popularity back in the 90s after Nan-

cy and Tonya and there were so many opportunities for tours like the Stars on Ice tour or the made for television competitions. If I wanted to, I could’ve done both at the same time and stayed amateur, but I just really felt that I had accomplished so much. This was a hard thing for many people to accept since I was so young though. But I won Nationals, Worlds, Olympics, I had the best Olympic experience, and I skated the way that I wanted to. I wonder that if I hadn’t skated the way I wanted to that I might want a re-do or something but things did fall in line for me. I felt like the next step was something that I wanted to take, which was to perform and entertain in a different way instead of doing the every day training and then competing.

118

CH+D • Summer 2017

What was it like to transition away from skating? I was so young and there were so many opportunities for me from skating then and I had a contract where I did my own special and it was really cool. I knew my experiences were something wonderful and that I was lucky enough to get them because of skating and what I had done. When I stopped skating, I still had connections and there were a lot of opportunities. Especially being a teenager at the time, getting to be able to do some of those opportunities, like Malcom in the Middle or 7th Heaven, was fun and I was really grateful for them. As I got older and stopped touring, I decided I wanted to find what was next for

me. I realized that commentating and broadcasting was the next step for me, even though it was a long road to get to. It took me about five years to break into that business. I was lucky enough in 2014 for Sochi to happen with the ‘craziness of Tara and Johnny’ on the Sports Network. One day Johnny and I created a funny Instagram account for us and we went from like four followers the first night to about 30,000 the next morning. From there, we knew we had something special. I just love the dynamic between you two. Yes, me too! What makes it work is that we really are best friends. I don’t know what I’d do without him. I talk to him every single day. I think that is what makes

what we do on air that much better and it is so hard to find. You two have gotten to move up to primetime now, which is exciting. What is it like being a former performer and being in this new role? Yeah, it’s just, wow; we are extremely lucky. We’ve been primetime for all US events for the past three years. I think it’s really hard for athletes to make that switch. I do remember and admire Scott Hamilton and Dick Button. I remember how Dick hated my layback and I think about stuff like that. Someone like Dick, who is like the forefather of commentators for figure skating, was able to balance the criticism with being supportive. You never felt like he hated your skating. I try to do that too, and I think Johnny does as well. It’s difficult to tell the truth, because sometimes it isn’t always nice, but I think that’s what the sport needs right now and I think that’s why people listen to us. The judg-

ing system has changed so much and is difficult to understand, and even political, that it makes it hard to follow what is happening. Sometimes I’ve wanted a translator because things can get so technical! Right? Yes, it can be hard to know what is happening if you’re just watching. We will explain things and give the audience what they deserve, but at the same time, I always keep performing in mind. It’s not in my personality or Johnny’s to have any meanness. We are just as truthful as we can be. Switching gears, I’m in love with this home. What is more of the backstory for this space and some of your other properties? When I was 14, after I won Worlds, we came out here to Kiawah because I had always loved being near the ocean. Growing up, I’d go to the ocean with my

parents and we’d go to this cute little place and I would always say, ‘If I ever do well, I’m going to get a house by the ocean.’ We actually have a book upstairs where I drew a picture of my mom and me walking and I’m saying that quote. I found South Carolina through one of my tutors. She had just moved to South Carolina and she kept saying how much I’d love it. It’s so special out here and once I found Kiawah, I just knew that this place was it. I used my money from skating and bought this lot and it started my investment in real estate. It took us about four or five years to build this home. We have had a place in Texas since I was a little girl, but this house here was mine. Later I had an apartment in Detroit when I trained and then a place in LA and one in New York in the West Village. Eventually, I was switching between LA and New York and spending summers out here, and as work got busier, being out here became my sanctuary. Before I began commentating, I would spend about

six months at a time out here and I never got bored. I love Charleston and this Lowcountry lifestyle. The beaches are beautiful, the water is warm, and the weather is gorgeous. I’m thankful that winning the Olympics gave me the opportunity to build this home. That’s why this house means so much to me. I just love it here. What were some of your design priorities and must haves for this home? Windows! I just had to have lots of windows so I could see this view. I wanted that Southern feel with all of the porches because I’m never inside when the weather is pretty. I have a Jacuzzi on my top floor, which is something I really wanted. When I was 14, after watching Clueless I really thought I needed one of those motorized closets and my parents tried to talk me out of it, but I did it anyway. I never use it at all. The back is just for storage. The other must-have element was Paris. You’ll see influences of it throughout the

house. I was out there for a while doing this movie then and my best friend came out for the summer while I was filming. I was 19 and it was such a special experience for me to be able to travel like that; it was this life changing experience and I always wanted to remember that.

The kitchen. There’s this whole house and that is where we go. Every year my girlfriends, all nine of us, come together here on July 4th and we realize that we just stay in the kitchen or by the pool. My room is nice as well. That view is pretty great to wake up to.

I see the French influence for sure. You’ve filled the home so nicely. How did the style come together?

What other plans do you see for your life moving forward?

First, I love antiquing. My mom got me into that. I think I have a really eclectic look honestly. I don’t like too much of any one thing. There is some gold, but not a lot. Really, I like the romantic look and I thought that the colors of that theme, with blues and whites, fit the coastal look here. Even though this is a beach house, I didn’t want to just put up shells everywhere. What is your favorite space in this home?

I have so many dreams and I always try to put too many things on my plate. I’m also working overseas on a skating show that isn’t an actual skating show; it’s more of an immersive show like a Queen of the Night or a Sleep No More. It has a sexier, cooler vibe for a night out. Skating would be the base of it, but it would have actors and dancers. I’ve been working on that for four years. Then, obviously, there is the commentating that Johnny and I are doing along with our other projects together outside of the booth. ✴

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? The three biggest requirements were to modernize the home, both inside and out, open up the living space, and add a second floor loft for the kids. Our response to these needs was to remove some walls and relocate the fireplace to an outside wall. Upstairs, we created an open loft area with a unique bunk space. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? In order to obtain some height in key places, we added small shed dormers over windows. What is your favorite design feature of this home? I love the openness of the great room, kitchen, and dining areas. The master bath is fantastic as well.

What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? We suggested that they move the fireplace to an outside wall to create openness, and the homeowners were initially resistant to relocating it, but now they love it. Also, they felt that removing the foyer space of their interior was strange, but I encouraged them to try the change and now their new entry front porch serves as the “foyer” for the home. What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? The homeowners requested living spaces with the ability to entertain on a large scale while at the same time be intimate when only the family was present. To accomplish this, interior and exterior living spaces flow well together and among themselves. Individually the spaces were designed such that they may be closed off from one another and all maintain a character particular to their function.

to have a truly custom home that provides the desired functionality, aesthetic appeal, and special features most people are looking for. Bringing all this together requires a skill only a trained professional can provide.

How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? The homeowners have lived in Europe most of their lives, so it was particularly challenging to design a home which would satisfy their European aesthetic on the interior, while maintaining a more traditional exterior. I didn’t want one to be shocked, when entering the house so the first floor while having some contemporary detailing maintains a traditional feel with warm materials, colors, and transitional moldings.

What is your favorite design feature of this home? I don’t really have a single favorite design feature but I love the way so many rooms, both indoor and outdoor, take advantage of the ocean views. Instinctively, I feel the whole composition is a portrait of the owners’ personalities and I feel we were able to help them see things in a fresh way they didn’t know existed and that is gratifying. What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? Being that the house is three stories and the core was designed as a box for cost efficiency, I really didn’t want that box look, so we buried the second and third floors within the roofline and used appendages, mainly porches and balconies, to articulate the mass. What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? The homeowners’ vision included two gazebo-like elements with a very symmetrical relationship between them. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? The roof design was the biggest design challenge with this project. We wanted to keep the octagonal roofs engaged with the existing home, but this concept presented an issue where we would be creating a valley for water to accumulate and potentially enter the home. The solution is that, while the ceiling of each porch is octagonal, the roof is actually septagonal. This solved our problem by allowing the roof to shed water from the existing roof.

What is your favorite design feature of this home? The framing details, which take their cues from timber-framed structures, were challenging to design and even more challenging to construct. But, the execution of these details by the contractor was excellent and the result is a fabulous space. What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? We spent a fair amount of time considering and discussing the finish materials for this project. In the end, the combination of the timber-framing details, standing seam metal roofing, and brick base (with open flemish bond to provide ventilation under the porch) all contribute to a porch which enhances the house without overpowering it. What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? Lou and Diane wanted a cottage–one that took advantage of creek views and preserved all the live oaks on the property. In this cottage, they wanted to make sure four couples could sleep comfortably in distinctly different suites, enjoy the outdoors in all seasons, spend time together or separately, and dine with a fabulous view. Creek views and trees were also important; we walked the site and pinpointed the trees and their canopies and engaged an arborist to assess and maintain tree health through construction and beyond. Lou and Diane wanted all interior spaces to be filled with natural light. What is your favorite design feature of this home? I have two favorite features of the home. The first is the window seat in the great room. It sits below an elliptical window that provides a sneak peak of visitors arriving at the front door. Location: James Island Square Footage: 3,090 Rooms: 4 Bedrooms / 4.5 Bathrooms Project Type: Remodel

Why was it important to use an architect for this project?

The client wanted a thoughtful, creative, and seamless design that enhanced the existing architecture

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? The scope was to add a master suite on top of the garage, enclose the existing screened porch as a sunroom, and to reconfigure the existing floor plan to optimize square footage. We moved and added walls in the more private area of the house for a very efficient layout. The more public and social areas were opened up to each other for an expansive feel. We added a lot of windows to brighten up the interior and to make the smaller rooms feel bigger.

What is your favorite design feature of this home? There is a strong axis from the formal dining room to the living room addition and from the kitchen to the informal dining room that really opens and brightens those spaces.

How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? The client had a very clear vision and a lot of experience with similar projects. It was just a matter of making it all fit smartly within the existing footprint and taking cues from the existing architecture for the exterior detailing of the additions as well.

Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? Builder: Bluestone Construction • Cabinetry: Mevers Kitchens & Baths Design Studio

What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? We closed off some existing openings and created new ones within the existing floor plan. It completely changed the flow, look, and feel of each room.

and made the additions look like they've always been there.

Why was it important to use an architect for this project?

These particular homeowners have great taste and had a lot of ideas for what they wanted, but needed our team to edit and streamline their ideas into a cohesive package. In context of the lot it was important that their house felt in scale with their neighboring counterparts and compatible with the vernacular of Sullivan’s Island architecture.

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? Like most homeowners, they wanted a specific number of bedrooms, but with a spectacular sunset view of the Charleston Harbor, they also wanted all the bedrooms to have porch access. Additionally, the home has distinct custom architectural details and space saving built-ins throughout. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? To put it simply, that’s just what we do. Every property has its own set of challenges that arise in various phases throughout the project. Together as a team, we have an excellent knowledge base to problem solve design challenges that we are faced with. What is your favorite design feature of this home? Everybody that worked on this project would probably choose a different element that they favor most, from the round porch situated for harbor sunsets, the builtin elements throughout, the unique ceiling

designs, sculptural plaster work, to the recessed light fixtures in the walls. Overall the mix of materials is what makes the home both a subtle and sensory space to live in. What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? This particular homeowner had a lot of ideas she wanted to see come to life; it was our job to take her ideas, compile and edit into a comprehensive and cohesive execution of her vision. Why was it important to use an architect for this project?

The homeowners wanted an architect to help bring their visions to reality. They are on a fantastic lot overlooking the intracoastal waterway and knew they wanted to capture the incredible views while maintaining a comfortable floor plan that would live well. They also have a lot that had some challenges in terms of the marshfront and setbacks. Also, the home is in Wild Dunes, where an architect is required.

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? Some of their requirements included two master suites, both with a view, a bunk room for grandchildren, an elevated pool that integrated well with the house, and a nice outdoor living space. We stacked the master suites so they each got a beautiful view of the water and integrated the pool and outdoor living space off of the kitchen and living room so they essentially became another ‘room’ and an extension of the communal living space. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? One challenge we had was keeping an open view from the living room to the pool to the marsh. We accomplished this by dropping a lower deck and planter below the pool deck which enabled us to lower the handrail to the lower deck and keep the visual corridor free and clear out to the marsh. What is your favorite design feature of this home? I have two favorite features; the first is the outdoor living space. The second feature is the custom ceiling we did on their upstairs office room where we replicated a boat hull.

I also can’t help but mention the outdoor pool bathroom. We created a custom door using a port hole the owners found at a salvage yard and made the entire bath a wet room. Technically, I suppose I have three favorite elements. What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? We have a lot of nice built-in nooks and features in the home that I really love. The bunks in the bunk room are one of my favorite features. I also love the office ceiling, the custom louvered barn doors we implemented leading into the upstairs master bath, the reading nook in the downstairs master, and the unique pool shape and handrail detail described above that respond to the lines of the property along the marsh. Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? One requirement was to maintain the surrounding nature. They also had 35 pieces of furniture they wanted to incorporate. I had 35 pictures and used a design tool and ended up incorporating 33 of them. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? Two things stand out to me in this project. The first was to break out of the typical box of home design. The second was to terrace off the entry to break down the vertical scale from the street view.

What is your favorite design feature of this home? The front entry sequence. What special or unique ideas did you present to the client for this project? The terraced front entry design with cascading steps was one. The full brick chimney on the front of the house with the curved front porch was another. Lastly, the trellis on the garage is one to note. Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? Interior Designer: Riverside Designers Lighting: Rick's Lighting + Home

Why was it important to use an architect for this project? What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? How did you meet those needs in this space? One of the goals the homeowners had was to make the floorplan more open. One way that we accomplished this was by evaluating the existing structure to determine which walls could be removed. After completing that route, we also developed an addition to the house in order to expand the square footage and give the home more functional space and a better overall flow. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges of this project? One particular challenge we faced during this project was coordinating the HVAC system with the existing flood zone requirements. By working closely with the contractor during the construction administration phase and focusing on details, we were able to design a proper solution.

What is your favorite design feature of this home? One of our favorite design features is the staircase in the backyard and the patio that connects the indoor and outdoor living areas. These two elements create a new level of comfort when someone transitions through the spaces. What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? While some might not consider it “special” or overly “unique," our expertise with creating larger, usable spaces is something that we focused on and the homeowner appreciated and needed. This was certainly a special element for them. Are there any subcontractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? Contractor: Terry Hoff Construction

WHICH SEASONS ARE YOUR SERVICES BEST SUITED FOR AND WHY? While available year round, the Mr. Critter team is busiest in the spring and fall months. Many varieties of insects and bugs thrive in the Lowcountry; even varieties that aren’t native to the area find the climate to be favorable. After mild winters, these pests are known to be even worse because not as many die off due to the cold. Gypsy moths, Palmetto bugs, and Japanese beetles are just a few of the many, many insects that can invade your home, shred your garden, and annoy you and your pets.

ELIMINATE IRRITANTS

The team at Palmetto Mosquito Control, partnering with Palmetto Exterminators, was the first company in the Lowcountry to offer mosquito and "no-seeum" control options to consumers. This family-owned business offers a variety of options including barrier treatments, customized misting systems and special event treatments. The team of techs evaluates many factors of your home and neighborhood to best develop a plan for your individual situation. SPECIAL CARE The technicians are careful to avoid edible vegetation, Koi ponds, and other sensitive areas when spraying.

SPRAY PROCESS After an inspection of your property, a surface spray will be put down in targeted areas. Next, a mosquito fogger will be used in areas where mosquitoes like to hide and breed. A larvacide is used during spraying to combat breeding mosquitoes as well.

WHY ARE LOWCOUNTRY CRITTERS SO HAZARDOUS? Yellow fever, Malaria, Zika, and West Nile virus are all associated with mosquitoes.

WHICH SEASONS ARE YOUR SERVICES BEST SUITED FOR AND WHY? The warmer months are when people tend to spend most of their time outside, which happens to coincide with mosquito season. While these pests can be present throughout the year, it is during this time when homeowners want to be outside that the need for pest control is the greatest. For more information, call Palmetto Mosquito Control at (843) 766-9701 or visit palmettomosquitocontrol.com. TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS: Inspect around your home after it rains to spot any standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Any object that holds even a thimble of water or bigger is where mosquito larvae can grow up, then bite you.

P

238

M O S Q U I T O E S Mosquitoes like to breed near ponds, canals, stagnant water, and wetlands. It doesn’t take much standing water for mosquitoes to breed so long as they have access to fresh air. This flying pest can carry diseases like Zika, the West Nile Virus, and dog heartworm. Even though different species of mosquitoes bite at different times of the day, the afternoon is your best bet at attempting to avoid them.

Preparing your lowcountry home for hur ricane season When it comes to potential storm damage, it is impossible to estimate what is going to happen or prepare for all situations. Weather patterns change, flying debris cannot be predicted, and sometimes subsequent tornadoes even appear. To try to protect your home from the wide range of trauma that storms might incur, you should first investigate the plethora of options available to you. Many modern options blend right in with your coastal abode and can be made storm ready faster than you can find a flashlight.

ROOF

If you’re building a home or replacing your roof, consider opting for a metal roof. This material can withstand high winds and can be grounded to ward off damage from lighting strikes.

SPRAY FOAM INSULATION

Adding spray foam insulation in your attic can help shore up the structural integrity of your roof. Besides being superior to fluffy pink insulation, spray foam will also act like glue between your roof and your home’s structure. This helps to ensure you don't lose your roof in high winds.

HURRICANE-RATED SHUTTERS

Many stylish shutter options are available to help shield your windows. The option seen here is a hurricane grade colonial shutter. Bahamas, accordion shutters, fabric panels, and motorized shades are all aesthetically pleasing compared to a plywood alternative.

WINDOWS

When upgrading your windows, research glass options that are specially designed and developed to be impact resistant to flying debris. This choice will leave you feeling safe every day of the year.

TREES

Before storm season begins, evaluate the health of your trees. Find out what you can do to help fend off devastation caused by falling and cracking trees.

GUTTERS

Install gutters that blend with your roofline seamlessly to divert water away from falling straight off of your roofline to the ground below. A buildup of water at the base of your home can damage your foundation.

FRONT DOOR

For a discretely durable focal point, look into installing a sturdy front door that boasts an impact rating. Good coverage doesn’t have to come at the cost of style.

FLOOD VENTS

Integrating SmartVent flood vents into your home can save your home's foundation during a flood and help lower flood insurance. This product blends in with the façades of most homes and can protect against hydrostatic pressure that can damage a home’s foundation and walls. A flood evaluation is included.

BACKUP GENERATOR

A permanent backup generator can be installed and easily concealed. Shrubbery or latticework can help to hide this large box that can yield a great deal of comfort if the power goes out.

hen it comes to the design of a custom home for a potential homeowner, Jeff and Scott Cline of Cline Homes, along with their team of homebuilding experts, have turned the guesswork of building for a future buyer into an artful science. Their designer, Ali Frick, adapted plans that she was particularly fond of from a floor plan that originated from a previously built Cline Homes house on Kiawah Island. But by moving those plans to a golf course lot on Daniel Island, it was clear they had to adjust a few things to appeal to the interactive lifestyle surrounding the

new location. “We tweaked the layout a little to create more closet and storage space, made the windows bigger to take advantage of the golf course views, and added more purposeful spaces for entertaining, like the butler’s pantry,” explains Ali. Sprawling views and visiting with neighbors are the culture on Daniel Island and Ali knew it was essential to take advantage of every aspect possible while also maintaining the best features of the original floor plan. A dark blue exterior color maintains the original Kiawah aesthetic, and, as in the

original floor plan, the high ceilings of the entrance draw the eye upward and outward. Ali and the team chose to enlarge the windows to take advantage of the sweeping visage of the golf course behind, but it was the warmth and welcoming aspect of the home that Ali really wanted to convey when a person first steps into the home. “It would have been easy to make the ceiling in the entryway go all the way to the second story ceiling, but that would have been too dramatic,” says Ali, “Instead, we added a tongue-and-groove ceiling in the living room and stained it a chestnut color, so that when your

wanted to concentrate on, though. She knew there would be real people living their real lives in the house, and real life can get a little messy sometimes. “We added a ton of cabinet and closet storage space to this house that’s not in the first Kiawah floor plan. In fact, everyone on the team is pretty sure that the homeowners

will never be able to fill all of the storage spaces in the house,” Ali adds with a laugh. “It’s a great problem to have.” Other aspects of the house that Ali made sure to enhance were the behind-the-scenes spaces for functional entertaining and family organization, like the butler’s pantry and laundry-and-mudroom combination. Operation Finally Home Update The home for Lance Cpl. Jeremy Brooking and his family is currently being built thanks to the team with Operation Finally Home. Max Crosby Construction is spearheading the job of building the brand new abode for this family of four. A groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier this spring to mark the official start of this project.
