Eye-Catching Exteriors Patrick Stewart of Holy City Exteriors and Holy City Shutter Co. expounds on the shutter industry and how both of the companies can help homeowners add curb appeal to their most valuable investment. How did you get started in the industry? Bryan Jordan, owner of Holy City Shutter Co. and Holy City Exteriors has been in the construction industry for most of his life. His father started the first vinyl siding company in Greenwood, South Carolina, and Bryan’s been involved in most facets of residential home building ever since. Patrick cut his teeth in sales and management first with Buck Lumber and was most recently a National top sales producer for Rollins/Orkin Pest Control. How did Holy City Exteriors and Holy City Shutter Co. get off the ground? About three years ago, Bryan saw a need for a locally-based and operated alternative to his current position that was based out of state. He wanted to offer a service-focused attitude to customers, and the ability to be on-site throughout the process to homeowners. From that vision, Holy City Exteriors was formed. Holy City Shutter Company began production in late 2017. Charleston has a great need for offering the ideal turnkey product that is finished in-house rather than outsourced to middlemen or companies out of town.

What services and products does Holy City Exteriors and Holy City Shutter Co. provide for homeowners? Our motto is “If it’s outside, we’re in,” says Patrick. No project is too large or small. We offer a full turnkey service and I am personally involved in every step of the process and communicating with the client during every step, which makes for a much more personal buying experience. We also provide services and products for additions, renovations, porches, wood and composite decking, and fiber-cement siding, just to name a few. We can even match paints that meet with the Architectural Review Board’s guidelines for downtown homes. What advice do you have for homeowners seeking to update or protect their home?

Tremendous energy savings can come in the form of the ability to protect the structure, to increase the price per square footage, and the overall lifespan. Not to mention, updating a home adds aesthetics as well as value to the property. Steele Trotter and Lindsay Paylor of Garden State Tile go head-to-head on tile trends of the season.

She Said: Steele Said: I tend to prefer neutral tile because it provides a soothing backdrop for other colorful elements to be introduced to the space, such as paint colors and decorative accents.

Steele Said: I love natural stone because it’s a material that can withstand the test of time. In particular, I prefer Dolomite because of its minimal veining, white background, and wide range of versatile applications.

Steele Said: Tile sizes are getting larger, which is great! 12x24, 18x36, 12x48 are often considered the norm. Large tiles can help a small space seem bigger, especially when used on the walls, which surprises people. I like using a 12x24 on the wall and pairing it with a smaller size, such as a 6x24 on the floor.

She Said: Neutral or Colored Tiles?

Favorite Current Tile Trend?

Lindsay Said: I love it when a client isn’t afraid to play with color. When used in the right setting, a colored tile can create a very bold look.

Lindsay Said: There are so many great porcelain tiles to choose from these days. They are extremely durable, budgetfriendly, and low-maintenance. Many of our porcelain tiles emulate natural stone, wood, cement, and brick, too.

Lindsay Said: I love that we are seeing a shift from cool to warmer tones. We have a really great ceramic subway tile line that has amazing warm gray and taupe hues in either a high-gloss or matte finish, and lately I tend to gravitate toward those.

Jay and Melanie Valk of Classic Kitchens of Charleston After living in their Mt. Pleasant home for about four years, Jay and Melanie declared it was high time to update their dysfunctional kitchen area to a space that worked for their young family. With Jay’s background in kitchen

It was important for Melanie and Jay to have an open, functional kitchen in order for their busy lifestyle and young family to work through their daily routines efficiently. While designing their new kitchen, they chose to remove the wall that separated it from the living room, and take advantage of some of the unused areas by moving the range and adding simple, beautiful white shaker-style cabinetry.

In the original kitchen, there was no island and, therefore, severely limited countertop space to work with, so the Valks designed a graypainted, furniture-style island with a black walnut countertop to contrast the sparkling, white “London Sky” Zodiaq quartz countertops on the rest of the cabinetry.

Another feature that helps complete the whole picture is how Jay and Melanie took the upper cabinetry up to the ceiling and added trim details along the top. Add in the new pendant lights over the bar and sink area, the new recessed lighting, and the Valks finally have a stunning, functional kitchen for productive everyday life. Carson Rembert, the owner, works with craftsman Brian Bartlett at Custom Carolina Hanging Beds, sister company of Blu Cotton.

The Craft:

Carson, Brian, and their team create custom wood hanging beds, furniture, and cabinetry.

Carson’s Backstory:

Carson grew up in Beaufort, South Carolina, and developed a passion for construction at a young age. He learned the basics in his grandfather’s woodworking shop, and took his first construction job at age 17. He and his wife Cindi, owner of Blu Cotton, moved to Charleston in 2012, and started the business soon after in 2013. Carson began by crafting unique hanging beds, but has since expanded his company to include all kinds of custom wood furniture, such as tables, chairs, benches, hutches, cabinetry, and more.

Brian’s Backstory:

Brian, too, learned the woodworking trade from family. Growing up, his family did not have the money to buy expensive furniture, so he and his father designed and built the furniture they needed in their own workshop. His neighbors noticed his skill and began asking him to build custom pieces for their families as well. He later moved to Charleston, joined forces with Carson, and is now able to pursue his favorite hobby as well as enjoy his job of creating beautiful wood pieces full-time.

Their Philosophy:

Carson and Brian have a passion for woodworking and decades of experience between them. They like to say that if it’s made of wood, they can find a way to build it.

There are so many options on the market for outdoor pavers that it can be a challenge to decide on a material that is durable, easy to install, and low maintenance. Not only must these materials be able to withstand the wear and tear of daily foot traffic, but also the strain of Charleston’s extreme outdoor elements. Concrete, brick, and other kinds of stone have been design favorites for years, but these materials are not always affordable or simple to install and can often require additional treatments to weather the elements. Florim USA has recently introduced a new porcelain tile product, available at Palmetto Tile Distributors, which solves many of these common conundrums. What are some of the lesser known signs that your HVAC system needs maintenance? “A quick indication would be lack of airflow and the system could be frozen; this could potentially cause the thermostat to go blank. A simple test would be to take a look at your drain lines outside your home. If your system is running, your drain lines should be flowing with water, and if your system is running and you don’t see water coming out, then that is an indication you may be collecting water in the pan and that’s a concern. Company: Harper Construction Credentials: Chris Harper has had an eye for home construction from a young age and began his Lowcountry career as a foreman building houses on Kiawah Island in 2009. During that time, Chris became a licensed General Contractor and Residential Builder before starting his own business, Harper Construction within the same year.

What vision did the homeowners have for their home and how did you work with them to bring it to life? The home was vacant for a long time and previously used as a rental property. The décor was early 90’s style, and the renters were hard on the home. We worked directly with the very talented interior decorator Mandy Walker and with the homeowner to create a transformational beach vibe. There are aspects of traditional custom interior work that blends with transitional accents such as shiplap walls and custom grey barn doors. The fixtures were unlacquered brass, which really gave it a designer flair and eventually will patina beautifully.

What are your favorite elements of this project? I love the custom barndoors and the built-in bunk beds the most. They really show off the talent of our trim carpenters and painters. These elements set us apart from a lot of companies because of the exclusive designs and high-end quality of craftsmanship.

Company: Riverside Designers Credentials: Jennifer earned her degree in Interior Design from the University of Georgia before returning to her native Charlestonian roots. As the owner and principal designer of Riverside Designers, she enjoys working on a wide variety of projects with a two-fold outcome: beautiful interiors and happy clients.

What are some of the key design elements of this space? These homeowners needed their home to function well for their busy lifestyle with two teenagers, so we created a series of larger, high-functioning living spaces. The house is now a place where everyone can congregate in the kitchen and great room, or retreat to quieter spaces like the sunroom or playroom to relax or focus on homework.

What were some of the challenges you faced during this project and how did you overcome them? The biggest challenge was blending my client's traditional aesthetic into this contemporary architecture. Lighting, for example, was something we had to take our time with, because I wanted both contemporary styling and appropriate scale. It took several rounds of selections to all agree, but that process made for a finished product everyone loves.

What advice do you have for homeowners who are just beginning a project? Creativity is a process that sometimes requires a little latitude; knowing that my clients trust me implicitly allows me to really focus on asking the right questions so that I can help guide them through a project. I recommend to anyone who is starting a project that they do their homework on Houzz or Pinterest so that they can effectively communicate their desired aesthetic. Two Daniel Island parents worked tirelessly to design the perfect home to help their young family thrive as they grow up.

functional house began and Nathan poured all of his extensive home-building skills into designing spaces that would morph with the needs of his children.

After a little shopping around, they found a piece of property that really spoke to their needs as a family. “We chose this halfacre lot not only because there was going to be plenty of room for activities, but also because there is green space on the backside that won’t be developed anytime soon. Plus there are seven beautiful live oaks around us,” explains Nathan. From there, the process of designing a family-

Having spaces that each family member could enjoy, either collectively or separately, was the central theme to the design of this home. “It was important that we have areas where we could watch a movie together or sit down for meals together. But it was also vital that those areas be efficient,” says Nathan. “Helping our daily routine move quicker is absolutely key.” Which is why they added a mudroom to help keep the kids organized. It also leads to the well-planned kitchen that has plenty of space for organizing and cooking for a large family. An adjacent and slightly more formal dining room provides a beautiful place to entertain while maintaining the ability to keep an eye on

ith four young children, it was imperative for Nathan Delpino, owner of Delpino Custom Homes, and his wife Kara, to not only have a larger home, but to create just the right environment for their sons and daughters. Nathan’s many years of home-building experience and their collective knowledge of living styles in the greater Charleston area led them to select Daniel Island as their residence.

the kids, or provides quick access to the fridge, if necessary. Upstairs there is a similar theme of the “farmhouse craftsman” style and functionality, but with a slight shift in colors. Four built-in bunk beds are found in the boy’s room, with fun X-shaped details, nautical lighting, and cubbies for device charging and storage. The room their two girls share is a classically chic oasis of pink. “We let the girls choose different elements of their room, so the younger sister selected the shade of pink in the bathroom to match the ‘Little Palms’ wallpaper, and the older selected the more vivid shade for the barn door with the brass hardware,” adds Nathan. On the opposite side of the house, the mother-in-law suite has a vibe more like a “Florida sunroom,” as Nathan likes to describe it.

Kara and Nathan selected elegant marble flooring and designed a walk-in shower with multiple shower heads for a beautiful, yet functional master bath, in case little dirty feet need to be washed at the same time.

Dream Team Two local residential design and building professional teams came together to create the ideal house that would be home to a future family.

uilding a custom home to fit all of the needs of a family is a daunting task—there are so many details to think about and plan ahead for that oftentimes, homeowners are overwhelmed by the whole process. But when faced with designing a home for a family that doesn’t live there yet, the task can seem even more impossible. Not so for Kelly Mangum at Strathmore - Cabinets • Design • Floors • Paint and the home-building crew of Brightwater Homes. The home was designed from the

inside out, so to speak, in that Kelly and Charlie Bostwick of Brightwater Homes sat down to gather their ideas while the architect, Sam Boyd, AIA, was also at the drawing board. “The whole team got started on the design from the get-go,” Charlie explains. “We knew the lot had plenty of natural light that we wanted to capitalize on, and then Kelly and I got to work on the details once Sam gave us the general parameters.” From there, Kelly pulled together every detail and finish that would be included in the house. Because Kelly works as a designer

for Strathmore, she is able to offer a variety of services and products, including wood floors, tile, paint, and cabinetry. These colors and details were really important to her. “I imagined that it was my family that would be living in this home and asked myself, ‘What do we need to function smoothly, what kind of countertops are the best for a young family, what finishes are sturdy, but also stylish?’” Halfway through construction of the spec-house they met with the couple who purchased the home. According to Kelly, it was extremely rewarding to

have designed a home that the family absolutely loved and fit right into, with no changes to the general layout or details. “The best part of this whole experience and partnership was finally seeing the family walk into their new home and watching the kids run through the house, picking their bedrooms and their favorite spots,” describes Charlie. To witness the fulfillment of their hard work and

Best of Both Worlds When a group of close-knit friends from college collaborated to build a custom home, the results went far beyond the expectations of the homeowners.

aylor and Tift Mitchell were in the market for a larger house to support the needs of their growing family when a rare plot of land became available on the peninsula. “My husband is a real estate broker and when we found

this lot we had to act fast,” Taylor explains. It was the perfect location for them—close to their daughter’s school, in a great neighborhood, and part of the community where Tift works. There were no doubts in the Mitchells'9 minds; “We had

the contract ready and submitted to the seller in under 15 minutes,” she laughs. Once the property was officially theirs, Tift and Taylor knew just who to call. “Tift’s college roommate,

Travis Arnett of Arnett Custom Homes, was the first person we called,” describes Taylor. The three of them joined forces with Jodi Crosby of Crosby Creations Home Design, who drew up the layout of the home. Between Jodi, Travis, and Taylor, they toiled tirelessly over every detail of the home because Taylor and Tift desired a house that fit in with the

characteristics of the neighborhood, but one that also expressed their fun individuality. Each characteristic of the home was in some way designed or requested by Taylor, and then perfected by Travis throughout the process. For example, Taylor aspired to have a dark house with black window frames, but as-

sumed that if the windows were dark, the rest of the house should balance that. Travis suggested they use white trim for the balance, and that way she could have her dark house and black windows. “I’m just a little obsessed with how wonderfully that idea for the exterior turned out,” adds Taylor. designed everything as well—Taylor relied on Travis so much for his expert eye for detail, which is how the stunning stairwell with its multi-dimensional, contemporary flare came to fruition. From there, Travis helped Taylor incorporate several family heirlooms throughout the house, including the

Outdoor Oasis A certain Isle of Palms homeowner sought design help from Palm Casual for her porch and pool spaces in order to create a fun and comfortable area for all.

hen planning seating for an outdoor space in the Lowcountry, style is just one of many factors that are part of the whole equation. The longevity of the materials used to create the furniture is one of the most important features when considering such an investment, which is a fact that Isle of Palms homeowner Susan Crocker understood. She needed a place for friends and family to gather, whether they’re visiting for the week, or even stopping by for a quick weekend while she’s working in Greenville. Susan sought the help of the outdoor

furniture manufacturers at Palm Casual, to make sure that the vision she had for her space would not only be functional and comfortable, but that it would also withstand the test of Charleston’s extreme weather conditions. “Mrs. Crocker came to the showroom with an idea of what she wanted, and we met again at her home, which at the time was still under construction, to see the porch area that we would be working with,” explains Mark Presley of Palm Casual. From there, the team assisted Susan to design not only the arrangement of

the room, but also to customize each piece of furniture that she would need to complete the picture. “Because she chose the cast aluminum loungers for the pool area and we wanted a consistent vibe, we helped her select pieces from the Georgetown collection to mix and match,” describes Mark. Long-lasting outdoor Sunbrella fabric covers the soft foam cushions and provides a pop of orange color to the darker frames of the chairs and sofa. “What’s great about these cushions, especially for Charleston, is that the foam doesn’t

absorb moisture,” adds Mark. “And if the foam ever does need replacing, we replace and restuff the cushions for free.” The same goes for the High-Density Polyethylene (also known as HDPE) wicker frames. Since this type of plastic is color-treated all the way through, the color stays strong and true throughout the life of the chair. And if necessary, the folks at Palm Casual also reweave the wicker for any of their pieces.

While Susan splits her time between Greenville and Charleston, she is confident that her outdoor furniture will stand the test of time as well as provide a homey spot for her own private retreat or her extended family’s regular visits. v

Picturesque Perspective One Mt. Pleasant couple tenaciously pursued their dream of living on the water and achieved their ultimate goal by bringing together a group of remarkable people to build their dream home.

uilding a custom homes takes vision, tenacity, and lots and lots of patience. But when a team of exceptional contractors come together to turn vision into reality, the process turns into an enjoyable and significantly less overwhelming experience. This is exactly what Michael and

Lisa DeMatteis learned as they sought to build a home on the water. Hailing from about one mile away in the Old Village, Lisa discovered their future lot while she was out for a run. From there, she and Michael followed through with calls and frequent visits to the site to make sure it would one day be theirs.

Between working with Phil Clark as their architect and Benjamin Boyd at Marsh Contracting, the building process was seamless. After plenty of research, the couple loved everything about Benjamin’s style at Marsh Contracting. “We saw the house that he had recently built for his family and just knew right away

that we wanted him to build our home,” explains Michael. It was also through Benjamin that the DeMatteises met Thomas Lauderdale, owner of Advanced Kitchen Designs in West Ashley. “After we saw some of Thomas’s work, we were very impressed and knew that we could leave it up to him to create our kitchen,” describes Lisa. Thomas came into the process at the architectural stage and, as he likes

to say, “worked around the room,” by asking the important questions: Where do the appliances need to be placed? Where are the prep stations going to be? Where will the utensils be kept? “The process works smoothly when we determine where the appliances need to go for the best work triangle and then go from there,” explains Thomas. He, Michael, and Lisa discussed making the hood a focal point, and therefore

They also determined the right size for the island, how much seating they would need around it, and the overall feel of the kitchen in order to make it mesh with the openness of the rest of the house. “It was really important to Lisa and Michael that the kitchen not be overbearing, but to flow with the theme of a coastal vibe that their spectacular view brings to the overall picture,” Thomas adds. A scullery was adjoined to the kitchen to manage overflow from the kitchen’s main fridge as well as for storage for some precious keepsakes. “I inherited a vast amount of china from my motherin-law,” Lisa expounds. “Nearly enough for 100 people! So we needed a safe place to store it, but also a way to display it, and Thomas came through once again.” Upstairs, the DeMatteises also had Thomas design their master bathroom,

in order to take advantage of the views. From the water, Michael’s goal was to only see windows and French doors, so Thomas worked with the placement of the bathroom windows to install a drawer bankstyle cabinetry system and suggested a huge mirror to go above so that Michael and Lisa can see their scenery even while they go through their morning routines. Mod á la Mode Two long-time Mt. Pleasant residents determined it was high time to replace the furniture in their home and consulted the experts at Danco Modern Furniture to find just the right pieces for their needs.

riginally hailing from California, Craig and Kelly have been residents of Charleston for nearly thirty years now and wouldn’t have it any other way. Paul Haugaard of Danco Modern Furniture has also been providing quality furniture in the area for about the same number of years. When it was time to update the well-loved pieces throughout their residence, the couple stopped by Danco Modern Furniture’s Mt. Pleasant showroom to do some research. “We’d had the same furniture for 18 years and it just wasn’t holding up any-

more,” explains Kelly. “But it was a bit of a struggle to find what we were looking for in Charleston.” Their dilemma combined with their fun, modern style led them to Paul. “Kelly and Craig came into the showroom with an idea of what they were looking for,” adds Paul. “From there, we suggested different pieces for them to try out.” Once Craig and Kelly had chosen their style of couches it was time for an inhome consultation with Katie, Danco Modern Furniture’s resident designer. Katie worked with the couple in their

house to determine which colors were right for the space. The living room has high ceilings with a limited amount of natural lighting in the afternoon, so Craig and Kelly opted for a vibrant tomato-red hue of leather to help brighten the room. Because the kitchen, living room, and dining area all flow into each other, Kelly, Craig, and Katie knew that it would be vital to not overwhelm the space with too much color. “Katie and Paul suggested the neutral chair fabric and we fell in love with the table because of its beauty, simplicity, and versatility,” describes Kelly.

The team created a library in the room at the front of the house. Meanwhile, upstairs, more color can be found in the form of the bright orange Stressless chairs that flank the television and more casual gathering area. “I have pretty bad back problems, so these chairs are the best thing that I’ve ever sat in,” exclaims Kelly. “As soon as we tried them out in the showroom, I

knew we had to bring them home.” It is clear from their selections that Craig and Kelly have no fear of bright colors and had plenty of professional assistance in choosing just the right shades to fill their abode with functional and cheerful spaces. v

MADE TO ORDER Follow the journey of Chef Ken Vedrinski to see how his path in this world took him from his traditional Italian-family upbringing in Columbus, Ohio to his current Lowcountry life featuring two successful restaurants and a modern, custom home on the water. y only, albeit brief, experience working with a chef prior to this interview was during my teenagesummer-job years and to say it wasn’t pleasant would be an understatement. Being demoted to a poolside waitress from a dining room waitress suited me just fine because the head chef put a

sincere, knee-knocking fear into me. In addition to that finite summer ordeal, many television personalities in the field have also helped to reinforce the stereotype that being hostile, bombastic, and volatile tend to be a character trait amongst folks in the profession. Safe to say, I was a bit nervous about meeting Chef Ken Vedrinski, owner of local restaurants Trattoria Lucca and Coda del Pesce. Happily, and instantly, those reservations were assuaged as soon as he opened the door to his stunning Daniel Island home and welcomed our Charleston Home + Design team inside with a big smile. We learned not all chefs are cut from the same intimidatingly aggressive cloth and this one, in particular, couldn’t be more hospitable or friendly. Ken’s impressive path did not lead him straight from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio to the Palmetto State, but perhaps it is all of those experiences along the way that shaped him to not only be the man he is now, but also into the exquisite chef that his restaurants and list of accolades declare him to be. Ken’s resume spans several parts of the globe and boasts many impressive accomplishments—including his big, nationally televised win against renowned chef Bobby Flay on Food Network’s show Beat Bobby Flay. Take a tour of Ken’s magnificent new Daniel Island home and a trip down memory lane of how his journey has brought him to the successful life that he leads today.

Where did you grow up and what was a typical day like for you as a kid? I grew up in Columbus, Ohio. My grandmother, who didn’t speak a lot of English, raised me. She actually grew up in this little town—Introdacqua, Italy. There were four of us kids and my grandmother raised us; we spoke a lot of Italian in the house because of her; we were Catholic. Since we were a traditional Italian family, we all sat down together to eat. Nowadays, so many people are like, ‘Eh, we are busy,’ and nobody sits down and actually eats together,

except for maybe on Sundays. With our Italian family, it was just never like that; we sat down and ate together. I remember, and try to explain to people, that on Sundays we had to go to 8 o’clock mass and then 11 o’clock mass, because my grandmother made us [laughs]. She would go to the 8 o’clock one and then go home and cook while we went to the 11 o’clock as well. When we got home at 1, there would be, what we call ‘brunch’ here, but back then we called it “festa mente” or little feast. We walked home all miserable and

tired, but when we saw the house and smelled everything, it kind of energized everybody. I’ve never forgotten that. It was from those traditions that I saw how food can change people and bring them together. I read you like to do a lot of farmto-table cooking and change your menus frequently in conjunction. Did your grandmother cook a lot like that while you were growing up? Oh, she would always cook whatever she found at the market like the old

Italians do. The Italians don’t really have freezers like we do here. They go to the market that day and get what they are going to go cook and visit the local butcher down the street, which all of that sounds so romantic and cute to us, but that’s just the way it is there. Do you have any favorite, fresh items that you get really excited about cooking?

It’d have to be fish. Around here in Charleston, the clams I use come from only about 20 minutes away from the restaurant. I have longstanding relationships with these fishermen, so they come to me first, and I get to select all the stuff I want before they go to other places. For example, not too long ago I picked out this orange swordfish. It was orange because the fish had been eating a

bunch of shrimp, but I got to select the pieces I wanted before anybody else and it was so great. Anything local is cool, but a lot of that is limited so you have to establish great relationships with these guys who sell everything. I’m sure you picked up a lot from your grandmother, but where did you train to become a chef ? CH+D • Summer 2018

(above) The river beyond his windows was the main focal point that Ken wanted his home to be built around, so he and the team at Phillip Smith General Contractor, plus his architect, Marc Camens of Camens Architectural Group, worked tirelessly to design everything around the huge windows, such as the cable railing used along the suspended bridge and down the stairs.

I got a degree from Columbus University in Hotel & Restaurant Management. In conjunction with that, I did a three-year apprenticeship with the American Culinary Federation. It was a program where you had to do 6,000 hours of practical experience while going to school to get your degree. It was a lot. The chef I worked for, Hartmut Handke, was one of the first master chefs; he was not an Italian. In the kitchen there is discipline—especially at that age when I was about 17. There were rules, like chefs had to come in on time, cut their hair, and stuff like that—nothing that was too tough. He was the one who said all of that to me and told me to forget about all of the cooking stuff and just start with arriving on time first; he just used different words. I ended up working with him a total of four years

until I went to Disney World. My family and I love Walt Disney World! Where did you work there? I went to Disney World for one year to see how the mouse worked. I worked at Buena Vista Palace. At the very top of this tower, there was a French restaurant with Chef Jean Pierre and it overlooked that big sphere at EPCOT; I’ll never forget that. With the Germans you learn discipline and technique. With the French, you learn the softer, more artistic aspects of cooking. It is neat to work with chefs of different nationalities. Everybody in that restaurant was super talented. That’s where my competitive side of cooking really started. After that all ended in Florida, I went with Jean Pierre to work on a cruise ship; it was one of those 120 pas-

senger ones that sailed all over. It was a challenging job, but I rose through the ranks pretty quickly. Working on a cruise ship and seeing the world sounds like fun! What brought you back to the states? When I was done with that and came back, The Hyatt was opening a new location in Columbus, Ohio, which was called Park Hyatt. This was going to be a Hyatt with a top restaurant. They hired me as the chef for the restaurant called Hyatt on Capitol Square. That was my first foray into the corporate mess. Later, I got transferred to a new Hyatt in Grand Cayman for two years. I wanted to get off of the island and they wanted to transfer me to somewhere in New Jersey. I didn’t want to go to Jersey. It was a promotion, but I didn’t

want to go. If you don’t take the promotion, you are kind of the black sheep because in a corporate world you have to do what is best for the company. So I quit Hyatt and went skiing in Aspen for a couple of weeks to figure out what I was going to do. From there I did time with The Four Seasons in Chicago. Next, Swiss Hotel was building a place in Atlanta, so I took the job as the executive chef for them. I had 37 cooks working for me and I was 38 years old. I had to deal with all of the different people, a cafeteria where we had to feed 250 people a day, and a 24hour cafe, the gourmet restaurant, and the banquet hall where we could serve up to 600, and I had no idea how to do all of that. We did a good job there though and got a great review and we were successful, but it was still corporate. What happened was they promoted me to a

corporate chef. There were five locations of the Swiss Hotel and what they wanted me to do was go around and fire all of the chefs and implement this standardization. It was not the best job I ever had. I didn’t even make it to Chicago or Boston to fire those chefs. I just didn’t go and simply quit. It was shortly after that when this headhunter approached me about The Woodlands in Summerville. They called me out of the blue and asked me if I wanted to come to Charleston. I was still living in Atlanta at the time and I thought Charleston was just too small and I didn’t know if there was an audience for the kind of cooking that I wanted to do. Charleston is still kind of conservative, but I thought I’d make the trip. They picked me up and took me for a drive down Highway 61 and since it was spring, all of the magnolias were in bloom and everything was so pretty.

They were trying to sell you with ambiance! Exactly. I was talking to the owners and they explained to me what they had in mind for the property. They wanted me to be the chef of The Woodlands and I told them I wasn’t interested. They asked me what it would take to make it happen, so I just threw out a number and they said ‘okay’. Eventually, I got The Woodlands up and going and it became famous; we won a ton of awards. After a while, we got a new general manager and I didn’t get along with him. It just wasn’t going to work. At that point, I decided it was time to do my own thing. I found a partner, and he wanted to open a top-tier restaurant with me. We got together and opened Sienna on Daniel Island. It did really great and won a bunch of awards. In a partnership, it is like being married. You might have different goals, ideas, and

financial objectives. After the fourth year, we were doing well, but that’s when I really knew I needed to go out on my own. I then opened Trattoria Lucca with a credit card and a home equity line of credit in 2007 during the middle of the recession and chose to open it in one of the up-andcoming neighborhoods of Elliotborough and Canonborough in Charleston. Guests were aprehensive to come to the area and I was so insulted by all of that. It was the right restaurant for the right time, though. I would agree since restaurant is still thriving!

Oh yeah. It wasn’t expensive to go to and it was like this little secret right there on the corner with this small sign. The restaurant was kind of modeled after one of those places you hear about when people go to Italy and find random cobblestone stairs, go in this tiny place with no sign, and end up having the most amazing meal. During that time, I went back to Italy frequently to visit my family so I always had these ideas and these visions. I wanted to make Lucca fun. The Woodlands wasn’t fun. You could hear a pin drop in there. It had the whole French maître d' vibe. Lucca turned out to be a lot of fun and we did really, really well. At that point I had the opportunity to open a second restaurant, Coda del Pesce, which was on the water at Isle of Palms. I first met Phillip Smith through Marc Camens, of Camens Architecture Group, who also designed Coda del Pesce for me. The restaurant was our first project together and a great experience so I had him build my house. Phillip is a foodie too, so he understood my point of view when it came to designing my house and my kitchen. When I hired Phillip [of Phillip Smith General Contractor], people tried to tell me he was expensive, but I fully believe you get what you pay for. I think it is absolutely proportionate because you get what

you pay for in clothes, shoes, and well everything really, but especially shoes. Like I have shoes I got in Italy 12 years ago and they aren’t worn out because they are made right. Same for my house. In fact, I go to other houses and I see what they’re doing and I know enough to be dangerous now. I saw some of the stuff other homebuilders are trying to do and I’m looking

but it's not necessarily my personality. While looking I knew that I really love the water and wanted to find something that would capitalize on that fact. I hired Marc as my architect, who is also a good friend of mine and a foodie. We started working on this particular modern house idea and doing the wall of windows. We had to figure out some things. The weight of the windows became an issue, so we had to bring in engineers. Not to mention we are in a flood plain. Phil was concerned about how expensive it would be and that I might have HVAC issues. I questioned why I had seen other houses do it before, especially out West in places like Santa Fe, and I was wondering why we couldn’t do it here. Finally he said “okay” and we all worked together to get what I had envisioned. One thing that I appreciate about this house is that it is modern, but the details and choices still seem comfortable and practical.

and thinking ‘no way!’ Phillip’s team went above and beyond to make sure it was done right. That’s an excellent transition into talking about this gorgeous, custom home. Tell me a little bit about it and what you wanted from your modern Daniel Island abode? On Daniel Island, with many of these homes, you see a lot of “sameness.” Don’t get me wrong, it is very well done and beautiful, but it is a lot of arches, shiplap, and that sort of look. I can’t say enough that there is nothing wrong with that,

You know, I went into this house one time, and it was great, but it was so modern. I mean, outrageously modern, but so cool to go there and have a drink or something, but to live there would have been a different story. It was almost like going to George Jetson’s home, but it kind of felt cold. Everything was so angular, even the artwork. One of the things that I like is that whenever people come here, they tell me it feels comfortable. Did you have one “must-have” design element or anything? The glass. Without question, this wall of glass. When it got bid out after Marc designed it, and when the glass package price came back, I said ‘nope’ and then they came back with a different design for the house, which made it a single story, but I just couldn’t do that. The glass then

became a non-issue. Also, I had to have the suspended bridge. I love the exposed beams with it. They had to reinforce it and that’s where a lot more of the metal had to come into the design. The team came up with the idea of the tongue and groove ceiling to soften the general look of the house. We were talking about bringing in the warmth with the contemporary and I thought we really needed it. It seems like you faced several challenges building this home, but I bet you learned a lot about building during this process. I did! Phillip and his team were great and they took care of a lot, and, of course Marc was the same way, but there was so much more. Like, I did not know that I needed a landscape architect. They asked me one day who I had hired and I just assumed that landscaping was all part of what they did. I had no idea.

Was there a lot to be done for landscaping? Oh yes, Phillip's team referred me to Brian Mills of High Marsh Landscape Contractors, Inc.. He is amazing and handled the architectural part of the landscaping. This back area behind the house, we had to bring that up almost six feet to start with up to the retaining wall so that water didn’t flood in and then over into my neighbors’ yards. Now I have this paver driveway, but at first I was saying that I liked oyster tabby and wanted to go that route. They explained to me that where my house sits it is so wet and if the driveway settles and the concrete cracks, you can’t fix an oyster shell driveway and with pavers you can. I was also excited about the idea of outdoor lighting because it makes such a difference and I had seen of lot of it during my travels in the Caribbean. You always see it on really cool houses. I didn’t want to skimp on that at all. Another thing is that when I first came here and they did the landscaping,

they showed me plans, but I didn’t really understand it fully and when I pulled up, I questioned why all of the palm trees were off to one side. The guy turned to me and said, ‘Ken, what if I had spread all of the trees along the whole back of the lot and then they grew? They would block your view and you’d be left looking at a bunch of trees.’ I just simply said, ‘you’re right,’ and left it at that! Hearing your story and now sitting here in this home looking at that view, it is all so interesting. Did you ever dream this would happen? When I started cooking I was happy with just cooking. I never thought anything like this would ever happen. I don’t know how much you go out to eat in Charleston, but I don’t think I’m the best chef. I work really hard and I love it, but most anybody could make this happen when you work at it and are passionate about it, and you have to hope for a few breaks here and there. As cliché as it sounds, you have to find something you like, work hard, and hope for good things to come. ✦

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? How did you meet those needs in this space? The homeowners knew this home would not be small, yet they wanted a home that was inviting to family and friends. We achieved this by nestling the home into the dunes, making it feel smaller and cozier and actually built a new 14’ high sand dune to bring the house closer to the ground. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges you faced with this project? This home is designed to maximize the views of the ocean from as many vantage points as possible. To offer an uninterrupted line of site from the main terrace, we dropped the pool terrace 6' and replaced necessary handrails with built-in planters. The planters visually mediated between terraces, while providing a protective barrier and eliminating the view obstructing handrails. What special design ideas did you present to this client? We proposed a classically inspired, light-filled bridge to connect the master suite to the main structure which offers a spot to enjoy the scenery. Most importantly, we proposed two sets of unique stairs, both capturing different spectacular views. The back stair offers views of the salt pond and marsh, while the front stair frames views of the beach and ocean.

Why was it important for the homeowner to hire an architect for this project? What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? How did you meet those needs in this space? They have a very large family and we were able to provide a balanced space for them in that regards. We created ample private and open gathering spaces on both the first and second floors to happily house many people. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges you faced with this project? We designed a series of components to create a pleasing balance of mass and scale for a challenging footprint that was 28 feet by 104 feet. The balance was necessary to make the home feel as it should. What is your favorite design feature of this home? My favorite feature of this home would have to be the connected indoor and outdoor spaces. The meeting of the great room and the pool deck is spectacular and turned out really well. What special design ideas did you present to this client? For this project, one thing that I presented was the combined, yet still separated, dining, kitchen, and living room spaces to accommodate the large family.

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? The homeowners desired a large, familyoriented beach house. We created a six bedroom, 7 bath house for them to meet that. Also, they wanted a swimming pool partially tucked under the house for shade. What is your favorite design feature of this home? The kitchen is in the center of the house making it the "heart" of the home and I like that a lot. I also enjoy the "British Colonial" inspiration of this home, which can be seen in regards to the roofline and the architectural detailing. What special or unique design ideas did you present to the client for this project? The clients loved the idea of maximizing the recreational opportunities on the ground floor level of the house. Also, we created two outdoor fireplaces for them as well as the previously mentioned shaded pool. Are there any contractors or vendors that you’d like to mention? The exquisite interiors were by Marshall Erb Design who was responsible for the tiles, finish selections, the paint colors, and fixtures. Daly and Sawyer Construction should be mentioned as well as Wertimer + Cline Landscape Architects for all of their hard work.

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? How did you meet those needs in this space? The homeowners requested all living spaces, except the second floor master suite, be on the ground level and take advantage of the spectacular views across Ibis pond, to the Ocean Course golf course, and beyond to the Atlantic Ocean. They also sought space for five vehicles in a separate garage structure. All of this demanded a large footprint, which had to be arranged around eight specimen Live Oak trees. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges you faced with this project? One of the biggest challenges was that the deed required a shared drive with the neighbors, which also crossed an existing bike path. We worked with the developer’s Planning and Legal departments to reach a more desirable solution whereby the bike path was relocated and both properties could have individual access. What special design ideas did you present to this client? There were several design features not typical to most homes that this house includes. For one, the HVAC system was designed with custom ductwork such that all air supply is through custom crown mouldings allowing for no visible registers. Also, the televisions were hidden in walls, ceilings, and the floor to become visible with the push of a button.

What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? How did you meet those needs in this space? An elevated home with parking below was a top priority for the homeowners. They also wanted to feel connected to the water from their living room, kitchen, dining room, and master suite. We designed a two-story volume on the water side of the property that stretched from setback to setback in order to house these elements. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges you faced with this project? The biggest challenge was the size of the property. The lot was under 7,500 square feet and only approximately 50 feet wide. Through the Design Review Board process, we were able to get a variance for side setbacks, principal building coverage, impervious coverage, principal building square footage, and foundation height. What is your favorite design feature of this home? I love the porch off of the master bedroom. The views are breathtaking, and it provides a place for the homeowners to wake up every morning and appreciate their surroundings. What special design ideas did you present to this client? We designed a small deck off of one of the upstairs bedrooms that provides an intimate spot to watch the sunset. Because there is an open park on the west side of the property, the homeowners also get a spectacular view of the Ravenel Bridge. To do so, we included a home theater, game room, playroom, and an all-ages pool and recreation area. Also important was providing a view of the water for all principal rooms and many of the bedrooms. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges you faced with this project? A U-shaped home with a large interior courtyard not only provided a great outdoor recreation place, it allowed us to provide views across the courtyard for the rooms that were not on the view. What is your favorite design feature of this home? The homeowner asked for fire and water features in this home. We included a striking, twostory waterfall in the foyer as well as a smaller waterfall at the top end of the pool. These features combine with the pool and its disappearing edge at the bottom end, the spa on the lower level, and view to the river beyond to complete the water cycle. On the pool deck area are three sculptural fires as well as the fireplace completing the fire circle.

What is your favorite design feature of this home? The bar area has to be my favorite. It is so impressive. Also, I really like how the stairs to the second floor turned out in the end. I believe the “story and a half” look achieved at the front elevation does a great job of keeping the overall scale of the home down, while meeting the clients’ essential requirements. What were some of the homeowners’ requirements? How did you meet those needs in this space? This was an oversized oceanfront lot and the owners wanted a clean, contemporary home that blended with the surrounding shingle-style homes in Kiawah. Use of lift-and-slide doors with thin mullion profiles creates great openings for light and ocean views and minimal details like steel beams and reglets emphasize clean lines. With the help of an operable glass garage door, the bottom floor of the guest house opens for outdoor entertainment. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges faced with this project? There was a high dune at the rear of the lot which we could not touch. Therefore, we raised the home and filled the void space with dirt and that became the pool and yard area. The owners wanted a low-maintenance home, so we specified Bluestone for the decks, NuCedar for the walls, stainless steel cable rails for the handrails, and slate for the roof. What is your favorite design feature of this home? My favorite design feature of this home was the expanse of glass on the rear of the house. Looking at the dwelling from the ocean, it appears to be all glass. What special design ideas did you present to this client? We provided 3-D visualization to our clients allowing them to view the complete home exterior and interior before the start of construction. The site had wonderful exposure to the Kiawah River, marshes, sea, and sky. We designed and sited the house to take immediate advantage of all these amenities, yet still provide the modern conveniences of a contemporary home. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges you faced with this project? This home is designed for casual living. The layout allows interior connectivity among the primary public areas: kitchen, living, and dining. Each space has been treated with a unique series of features to differentiate one from another. A sense of personal identity was important and achieved by sprinkling in subtle alterations in the materials, colors and character adds like Bahama style shutters. What is your favorite design feature of this home? We used the ground level as additional living space; it’s covered yet open to provide a sensory connection to the surrounding environment. A small plunge pool with an infinity edge nestled into an open deck provides a transition between this outdoor living level and the river marsh beyond.

The suspended three-story stair tower is certainly a favorite feature, but I love the multi-level kitchen island, the mix of materials, connectivity to the outdoors and various custom built-in features that give the home functionality.

The clients and I were very conscious to carry elements throughout the house that give clarity to the design. As with any of my homes, the goal was to make the whole house a unified concept that tells its story through the design.

The owners favorite color is Ferrari red so you can see in the backsplash of the kitchen and an accent in the master bathroom where we have incorporated this color. How were you able to design a solution to some of the challenges you faced with this project? We removed the existing ceiling, conducted asbestos abatement, and put a furr down the length of the condo for HVAC, then brought it through, into the tops of the bedroom closets to maximize height. We used suspended lighting and low profile LED lighting. What is your favorite design feature of this home? The central island with a flush hood allowed us to move the cooktop from the wall and also be a focal point for the dining bar. This is accentuated with a red tile backsplash. What special design ideas did you present to this client? Removing the kitchen wall opened up the kitchen, dining, and living areas, making the condo feel much larger. We left one of the existing concrete columns exposed and highlighted it with lighting.

At this property, the homeowners did not need a formal dining space currently, but since needs may change later, the office space can easily serve as a formal dining room in the future. That dual purpose space leads to the butler’s pantry, which also serves as the “family foyer,” that features direct access to the stairs to the garage, elevator, laundry room, and the kitchen. What is your favorite design feature of this home? One element that stands out as a favorite is the two-story entry. It provides a direct view through the house and allows for that initial “wow” factor upon entry to the home.

urricanes are particularly daunting for homeowners because these storms can damage homes in a myriad of ways. The Lowcountry is no stranger to hurricanes, and with storm season coming up, it is important for homeowners to consider protecting their homes now in preparation and in an effort to prevent as much damage as possible. HURR IC ANE 101 Hurricanes are scaled between 1 and 5 depending on their severity, but even a category 1 hurricane produces wind speeds of at least 74 mph, which generate enough power to damage unprotected gutters, windows, and roofs, and to topple trees and power lines. High winds are not the only hurricane dangers. Heavy rains and storm surges often lead to flooding, which can cause additional structural damage in homes and displace wild animals. Don’t let the term “tropical storm,” fool you either, because they can be just as dangerous and detrimental as an officially categorized hurricane. DOORS & WINDOWS & GARAGES Hurricane impact-rated doors and windows are a key aspect of maintaining your home’s structural envelope. Because the windows are made with layers of polyvinyl butyral (or PVB) sandwiched between the glass, this makes the glass nearly impenetrable. Impact-rated doors are similar, in that the same technology allows for more glass openings, while also boasting reinforced frames and beefed-up locking mechanisms. And don’t forget about the biggest opening of your

home—the garage door. Hurricane rated garage doors protect the largest opening of your home from wind and impact damage. ROOFING & INSUL ATION When it comes to potential hurricane damage, it is impossible to predict what is going to happen or estimate how much harm will be inflicted. One of the best ways to ensure your home stays intact during a major storm is to maintain a strong structural envelope. In other words, make sure you have a strong roof, which is one of the largest, and therefore, most susceptible areas of any residence. Consider opting for a metal roof if you’re building, remodeling, or replacing the hood of your house, because metal is often much stronger, longer-lasting, and requires less maintenance than traditional shingle roofs. this past fall, Charleston Home + Design magazine joined forces with industry veteran Mark Bradley of Bradley Advertising & Marketing to produce a new television commercial to promote the Charleston Home + Design home shows that the team hosts each year in January and August. It was clear that the setting required a stunning local home to

create the perfect backdrop for our message, which was, “If you can dream it, one of the vendors at our shows can make it happen.” From there, Charleston Home + Design magazine teamed with SHELTER Custom-Built Living, a fully custom home builder headquartered on Daniel Island, to film on location at the personal home of Ryan and Jenny Butler. As the owners of

SHELTER Custom-Built Living, Ryan and Jenny Butler poured all of their home-building prowess into their abode. Mark Bradley also suggested that a young couple with small children should star in this commercial to both exemplify and connect with quintessential Lowcountry homeown-

ers. Charleston Home + Design’s own Art Director, Patrick Brickman, and his youthful family fit the bill, so the next challenge fell to where each scene would be shot in the Butler’s impeccable home. Every room offered a new and surprising feature that was considered ideal for the commercial. In short, the final product barely

ShopTalk New Facility for Carpenters Restoration Carpenters Restoration recently opened a facility in McClellanville where they will create all of their custom cabinets and furniture pieces. The new 6,000 square-foot shop has the latest woodworking and wood processing machines, as well as a large spray booth with filtration systems. This technology improves the quality and accuracy of their products and allows them to take on larger custom projects. With a bigger space, Carpenters Restoration can now manage all facets of the custom construction process from start to finish on-site. This company has also been busy renovating their Mt. Pleasant furniture studio. Once the updates are complete, Carpenters Restoration will have a new office and showroom as well as a comfortable space to meet with clients. The studio will remain open through the renovation process, and will continue to handle furniture repairs and refinishing.
