Athlone Library celebrates 50th birthday FEVER REPORTER

S history records, Dick King passed through the Amanzimtoti area on his way to Grahamstown in 1842 to request help for the besieged British garrison at Port Natal.

Many know the route that Dick King took through Amanzimtoti later to became Kingsway, but few know that Dick King’s famous ride is commemorated in the Athlone Park Memorial Library gardens with a memorial stone.

This year, Athlone Park Memorial Library is celebrating 50 years of existence.

The closure of Isipingo Beach to whites people in 1965 resulted in more than 50% of the former “Pingo” residents settling in Athlone Park. The proceeds from the sale of the Dick King Memorial Hall in Isipingo Beach were used to establish a library.

The librarian at the time of opening was Mrs. J. Green and the library was affiliated to the then Natal Provincial Administration.

Later, the memorial plaque to the fallen Isipingo servicemen of the two world wars was transferred to the newly built Athlone Park Memorial Library foyer and Armistice Day memorial services were held there annually.

An application was made by the Amanzimtoti Town Clerk in April 1988 for a subsidy to extend the library.

The Natal Provincial Administration agreed that the Athlone Park Library was not housed

in a standard building and they would subsidise extensions, but it could only be budgeted for in 1991. Extensions were to include an activities room and children’s corner.

In 1991 the library was extended and a subsidy of R134 000 was paid by the NPA toward the cost. The extension resulted in the library doubling in size, which in turn meant that services that were previously unavailable would now become available. Art prints, records, cassettes and photocopying services were introduced at the library after the extension.

The changing ethos of libraries over the years shows that libraries today are more than just a means for disseminating information. Libraries play a much greater role in communities by addressing societal issues such substance abuse, HIV/Aids awareness and addressing the needs of the youth. A library also provides children’s services, promoting literacy, doing outreach work, enhancing reading and creating social cohesion. eThekwini libraries have free WiFi, which is becoming a popular service with pupils and communities. The library also has an online book club and provides an e-book service. This service has taken off with great enthusiasm by the public.

Other than providing books, the library also conducts children’s holiday programmes and the library has formed book clubs with schools to enhance literacy.

Dick King’s famous ride is commemorated in the Athlone Park Memorial Library gardens, at the memorial stone is library assistant, Natalie Hinnings, librarian, Rabia Khan and, library as­ sistant Goodman Makhoba.

Walking against violence FEVER REPORTER KINGSBURGH Child and Family Welfare Society held a fund-raising walk along the beach on Sunday, 27 November at 8am, in keeping with the 16 Days of Activism campaign of No Violence Against Women and Children.

The walk started the Winklespruit beach and finished at Warner Beach.

Proceeds and goods-in-kind were donated to Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare. Chairperson Jenny Smith thanked everybody for their support and donations.

“It was such a pleasure to enjoy our beautiful beach together in support of nonviolence against women and children,” she said.

The walk was enjoyable, the weather was great and the community gave such wonderful support the society will try to make it an annual event.

Biker toy run revs to triumph FEVER REPORTER

N Sunday, 27 November, Amanzimtoti residents supported the 17th annual Durban National Motorcycle Toy Run. The event saw thousands of riders revving their engines and travelling from the Pavilion to the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre all for a good cause, to collect toys for disadvantaged children.

A new toy donation gave the public entry to the event at the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre with entertainment for adults and children and market stall holders.

Sapphire Coast Tourism’s Monique Botha said Sapphire Coast Tourism was happy to host the annual event.

“It was again a great success. We are pleased to see the bikers come to town. We hope everybody enjoyed themselves and will return next year to an even bigger and better toy run,”

2017 CANSA relay date moved TANIA SANDBERG AT a committee meeting last week it was decided to move the planned CANSA Relay for Life forward due to the few entries as a result of the busy festive season.

The relay will now be held on the weekend of 18 and 19 March, 2017 at Kuswag High School.

The CANSA Relay for Life is a global initiative that is volunteerdriven and community owned, whose motto is “celebrate, remember and fight back”.

At the relay teams of 10 and 15 take turns to walk or run around a track for 12 hours, the goal being to keep one member on the track at all times as “cancer never sleeps”.

Participants enjoy camping out, entertainment, food, games and community fellowship, the common purpose is their desire to help CANSA fight cancer and support those affected by cancer.

“It represents the hope that all those lost to cancer will never be forgotten and that those who are fighting cancer will be supported and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

“Teams raise funds before and during the relay and these funds are dedicated to funding CANSA’S unique, integrated service within your community,” CANSA Relay for Life committee member, Michelle Carless said.

AKING history, Woelwater Pre-Primary School from Amanzimtoti finished as runners-up in the Kleuterzone National Championships.

The annual competition, broadcast live on Kyk-Net Nou and Via, is open to pre-schools nationwide and winners are selected through the public voting for their favourite one.

“Only 24 schools nationwide were selected by a panel to participate in the 2016 Kleuterzone programme after which 14 items were voted for by the public to compete in the championship finals.

“Three of Woelwater’s classes were voted in by the public to compete in the nationals in Pretoria,” said principal, Celia van der Merwe.

In total 65 pre-schoolers were selected to perform, but only 21 had the funds to perform in Pretoria, and subsequently the 21 children had to quickly learn and perform all three items.

Teachers also had to adjust and make new costumes that would fit all of the children because the groups were now a mixture from the three classes, but the Woelwater preschoolers did not let this deter them.

“In the end we walked away with four trophies - Best Co-ordinated Moves and Gestures, Best Costumes, Best Organised Group and Overall Second Place in all of South Africa,” said the principal.

“Our children are all under the impression we won, so we have decided to have trophies and certificates made for each of them, and to organise our own celebration function to hand out these trophies and certificates.”

“Our children were the only participants who had to perform three times, the only children who actually sang to all three songs and did dance moves along with the songs, the only children with three costume changes and the only children to travel 700km to take part in the national championships.

“Our parents, teachers, friends and family all went crazy with votes. Because we only had four days to plan all of this, there was no time to start a proper voting campaign within the Toti community. Even the presenter, Anthonie Bougas, was blown away by our children, our costumes and the performances,” Van der Merwe said.

OLIDARITEIT Helpende Hand se skooltassieprojek is ’n nasionale projek waardeur 27 000 tassies al aan behoeftige graadeens geskenk is, sedert die projek in 2007 van stapel gestuur is.

Die projek speel onmisbare rol in behoeftige graadeens se lewens, want danksy so ’n tassie kan hulle hul skoolloopbaan op gelyke voet met hul klasmaats begin.

“In KwaZulu-Natal versprei ons 199 tassies vanjaar, dit is die provinsie wat die meeste kry, buiten vir Gauteng.

Leerlinge van Kuswag Skool sal direk by die projek baat,” sê Helpende Hand se skakelbeampte Marlien van der Westhuizen.

Sy sê die insameling van tassies skop af in die Vrystaat waar Meyer le Roux van Buffelsfontein Baard-olie gaan 500km driekamp tussen die Koppies en Gariepdam in die Vrystaat vanaf 22 tot 27 November sal aflê.

Le Roux het besluit om die Tastrap aan te durf, nadat hy te hore gekom het van die Skooltassieprojek en die reuse-aantal Afrikaanse kinders wat by die projek baat, want vir hierdie kinders is dit nie net ’n tassie vol skryfbehoeftes nie. Dit is die eerste trappie op leer om uit die put van armoede en moedeloosheid te ontsnap.

“Ek durf hierdie moeilike tog aan om my daaraan te herinner dat daar in hierdie land kinders is wat baie swaar kry,” verduidelik Le Roux.

“Hulle kry elke minuut van hul lewe baie, baie swaarder as wat ek op die Tastrap gaan kry. Daar is niemand op wie hulle kan staatmaak nie. Al is hul grootste wens net ’n drukkie, is daar

niemand om dit te gee nie. Hulle gaan slaap honger, koud en pynlik alleen. Ek gaan my fiets trap om geld in te samel vir tas vir so ’n kindjie.”

Le Roux het reeds maande gelede begin oefen om vir meer as 500km te kan draf, fietsry en swem. Die driekamp gaan hom vyf dae neem en baie sweet kos. Vir Le Roux is daar meer op die spel as net die fiksheidsuitdaging.

Vir hom gaan dit oor vryheid en geregtigheid en hy put inspirasie uit die Anglo-Boereoorlog. Hy wil die kinders bevry van armoede, want dit is die regte ding om te doen.

Hospice given ‘dance fitness’ cheque KHANYA Hospice is grateful to the women of Ultimate Dance Fitness, who held a fund-raiser for Hospice recently, and a cheque was presented to Hospice at the weekend.

Event organiser Shereen Paul and her team organised a dinner and dance two weeks ago in Scottburgh to raise funds for the organisation.

“We would like to thank all those who worked so hard behind the scenes,” said Paul.

She also thanked Hospice for the work the nursing staff are doing in the huge area, from the old airport to Hibberdene.

Amanzimtoti Tennis Club news Amanzimtoti Tennis Club news There was some social tennis played on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday night vandals attempted to steal our light-meter boxes by chiselling away the concrete area around it.

A big thank you to Robbie, Alan, Mike and Rob Jack for the work done to secure our box. A big thank you also to Brightman and Gabriel who showed us their bricklaying skills.

Our year-end function is on Saturday 3 December. There will be usual social tennis in the afternoon and Alan will light the braai fire at about 5pm.

Don’t forget to bring your meat – salads will be supplied. We are looking forward to an evening of good food, music and perhaps some dancing. Our fund-raiser hamper will be on display in the clubhouse on Wednesday and Saturday for ticket sales. Support from all our members will be greatly appreciated. We hope to do the winners draw on Saturday 3 December.

YUNDAI Amanzimtoti’s Cathy van Zyl has done her dealership proud in the Hyundai Automotive National Skills Olympics 2016, walking away with first place as warranty clerk, at an awards evening last Saturday evening in Johannesburg.

Making this achievement even more significant, Van Zyl achieved this exceptional national win in a short space of time, having joined the dealership in March 2015. This is also her first time working for a dealership.

“The Skills Olympics for warranty clerks was judged according to overall claim submissions, approvals and audit results to make it into the top 10. We then went to Hyundai head office in Bedfordview in October to complete more tests for the finals,” said Van Zyl. “I am very proud of myself and for the dealership as this is a first for us.

The win came as a complete surprise.

I was hoping for second or third, but I am very happy to have taken first. I love my job and the people I work with,” she added.

Van Zyl grew up in Toti and matriculated at Amanzimtoti High School.

She is a single parent of an eight-yearold son.

She spends her spare time with her sister, and mother, who owns a shop in Seadoone Mall.

“We are extremely proud of Cathy and hope she will continue to grow with us. Hopefully next year she will win it again,” Hyundai Amanzimtoti sales manager, Mike Gradwell said.

Scottburgh lifesaver rides international waves FEVER REPORTER

T the recent World Lifesaving Championships in Eindhoven in the Netherlands it was announced that Scottburgh lifesaver, Stacey Bowley, is to be inducted into the World Lifesaving Hall of Fame.

She is the first South African competitor to achieve this honour, male or female.

Bowley, a home-grown hero, started her schooling at Scottburgh Pre-primary then moved to Scottburgh Primary and matriculated at Scottburgh High.

“From an early age Stacey made a name for herself in various sports codes.

“By the time she left school she had represented KwaZulu-Natal in

eight codes, some at KwaZulu-Natal schools level and some at adult level. These included swimming, water polo, athletics, netball, karate, cross country, biathlon and lifesaving. She has represented South Africa at biathlon, swimming and lifesaving,” said mom Deanna.

Stacey’s greatest achievements were, however, at lifesaving, where she won first world titles as member of Scottburgh Lifesaving Club in Durban 1996.

Stacey then moved to Durban and joined Durban Surf Lifesaving Club. She achieved a world record in 200 metres with obstacles, both at world inter-club and international.

To top this she got a world record in stillwater relays, in which she was the anchor leg and more ti-

tles in the surf in Auckland in 1998.

She was presented with the state president’s award that year.

“Sadly President Nelson Mandela was ill and not present for the ceremony,” Deanna said.

Adding to her list of firsts, Stacey was also the first lady to captain the South African team to the World Championships in Sydney in 2000, where she obtained more titles.

When she stopped competing, she began coaching.

She worked on the beaches of

Scottburgh, Amanzimtoti and Durban for a number of years, both as a volunteer and a professional.

Stacey is now attached to Pirates Lifesaving Club where she has been coaching Nippers for a number of years. She also coaches juniors and seniors. She also wants to add completing the Comrades Marathon to her to-do list.
