SAPS advises stokvel clubs THE management of Amanzimtoti SAPS advises stokvel clubs, ahead of the festive season, not to lose their hard earned money to criminals.

Stokvel-related robberies and thefts are most prevalent from about this time of the year and stokvel clubs are urged to be proactive and adopt reasonable measures to safeguard their money.

Instead of withdrawing large amounts of cash from the bank to pay out money to their members, they should rather transfer the money into members’ bank accounts.

Members who do not have bank accounts should be encouraged to open accounts. Clubs that have to pay cash to their members, a practice which is inadvisable, should ensure that they have a secure venue with adequate safety measures in place when dividing and paying members their share of the year’s savings.

Stokvel clubs can also request their local police to patrol the vicinity of the venue where they are to make payments to their members as this would deter criminal elements.

Members of stokvel clubs should be vigilant and take precautions to safeguard their money when making withdrawals at the ATMs. They should not withdraw large amounts of money, especially after hours when the streets are quiet and criminals are likely to be lurking around but rather use the ATMs at shopping malls, during business hours when it is safer or where there are security officials on duty.

Firearm thief gets 11 years ATTEMPTED murder accused, the 24-year-old Siya Glen Mghobozi, was convicted in Durban Regional Court and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for the theft of a firearm and another six for attempted murder.

“On 2 August, 2014, the complainant left his house in the Amanzimtoti area to go on holiday.

He left his gardener Siya Glen Mghobozi to take care of his house in his absence.

“He received a call to inform him that the alarm in his house had gone off.

“When he finally got home, the complainant discovered his safe was open and his firearm and R90 000 cash was taken.

“It appeared that a duplicate key was used to open the safe,” said Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

Van der Spuy said the complainant then found a friend of the gardener, also known to him, on his premises, with a gunshot

wound.

“The wounded man told the complainant that the suspect shot him when he refused to go along with him and two cases, one for attempted murder and another for theft was opened with SAPS,” Captain Van der Spuy said.

After following up on information received, investigating officers of Amanzimtoti Detectives, Constables Khanya Ndlovu and Malusi Dlamini, traced the suspect and arrested him in Amandawe, Scottburgh where he was hiding at his uncle’s house.

“The suspect was found in possession of the stolen firearm and the cash, which positively linked him to the theft. He was charged and found guilty on both cases. The two sentences, for theft and attempted murder will run concurrently. The accused was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm,” Captain Van der Spuy said.

Cancer survivor on a journey of discovery TANIA SANDBERG

ANCER took survivor Roshnee Jagtee on a journey of discovering her inner strength. She is a splendid example of life beyond breast cancer as she lives life to the fullest.

She returned to work as a senior cabin crew member for a well-known domestic airline, and is ticking off items on her bucket list.

Now five years cancer-free, her story is unique in the sense that prior to her diagnosis she took excellent care of her health, conducted regular health checks and had no family history of cancer.

But in 2010 life changed for the 40-something-year-old wife and mother of three.

“I went for a gynaecologist check-up in October 2010 and was diagnosed the following January, 2011. We were on an overseas holiday when I discovered a lump in my breast in the shower. Because I did not feel ill or pain, I waited until we got back home to check it out,” Jagtee said.

“A mammogram could not pick the lump up so I had to have a biopsy.

“My daughter Dhiya was in Grade 1 and my sons, Shivaan in Grade 10, and Adhir was in matric. Because I had no family history of cancer I was not concerned,” she said.

Given her busy lifestyle, when the doctor called with the results and asked her to meet in his office, she insisted he told her over the phone.

“Despite his misgivings, he told me it was Stage 4 breast cancer. I asked if he was sure and he said ‘yes’.

Even the doctor was surprised, because he knows my whole family,” Jagtee says.

“Your world turns, the first time they tell you that you have cancer you think you are dying. More women die of breast cancer than HIV/Aids.

“I know seven women directly who died. Although we know of cancer, we do not know enough about cancer. We need more campaigns to

After the diagnosis, Jagtee saw an oncologist, who worked out a treatment plan.

“I want to remind cancer patients that at the end of the day remember the doctor is there to advise you - he knows his work, but you know your body.

“At one stage, the oncologist told me I tested negative for Hers2 test and but insisted I take medication. I walked out of that room, if you feel your body can’t handle chemotherapy, just don’t take it,” she said.

“Chemotherapy is merely a cocktail of medicines an oncologist puts together, hoping it will work. Different people react differently to medication. I got two oncologist opinions,” Jagtee said.

Treatment was a full nine months and included a lumpectomy, radiation, tests and scans.

City’s interventions to minimise drought impact COMMUNITIES are urged to continue to use water wisely to mitigate the effect of the drought.

Despite recent rains, the drought situation still remains a challenge in eThekwini Municipality.

However, a number of interventions have been implemented by the municipality to ensure that taps do not run dry.

A report tabled at full council on Thursday, 27 October outlined the various initiatives implemented by the City.

Head of Water and Sanitation, Ednick Msweli presented the report to the Executive Committee, which held a special meeting today, before the full council meeting.

The report stated that South Africa is in the grips of one of the worst

droughts for many decades with 2015 being the driest year on record since 1921.

This has impacted on the local dam storage levels. Therefore, the Department of Water and Sanitation together with Umgeni Water have imposed restrictions on water supply ranging from 15% to 50% to preserve the available storage.

Currently Midmar Dam is at 48.06% capacity, Albert Falls at 24.5% and Inanda Dam is sitting at 63.41% capacity.

Msweli said the total storage in the uMgeni System at the beginning of August was 48% compared to the level of 72% at the same time last year.

He said Umgeni Water is continuing to reduce supply to the City in line with the Minister of Water and Sanitation’s

directive to reduce demand by 15%.

Msweli said the Water and Sanitation Unit has relied on water tankers which are deployed daily in areas that are known to have water supply challenges for various reasons including areas not yet reached by the Western and Northern aqueducts, areas affected by the drought curtailments and areas where there is currently no reticulated water supply.

The report stated that while some weather reports say that above average rainfall is expected in the early parts of 2017, other reports suggest that the drought could continue for at least a further 12 months.

However, “if good” rain is received before the next dry season (winter 2017), it may not be sufficient to fill the water supply dams to high enough levels to see us through until the following

She changed her diet and only fresh, healthy meals.

“I also kept visitors at bay to build up my immune system. I wanted calm and peace and mostly kept in mind that my son was in his matric year.

“This was supposed to be his year.

Not mine. I did not want to become the centre of attraction.

“I was very positive and totally focused and was not going to let cancer get the better of me.

“I tackled cancer head-on, I wanted to see my boys turn 21. Adhir passed matric with six As.” Her advice to others are to stay focused, stay positive and don’t lose hope.

“If I can bring another life into this world, then I can beat this. My power lay in knowledge – knowledge about cancer. Knowing exactly what I have been diagnosed with and asking questions, until I knew exactly what I wanted to know,” she said.

Recently Jagtee went on a cruise to Venice, Croatia, Italy, Istanbul, Greece and Petra in Jordan, and visiting one of the seven Wonders of the World is next on her bucket list.

Jagtee went for further tests last week and was given the all-clear.

Msweli said further steps taken to improve turnaround times included the hiring of 103 extended public works programme employees, who have been deployed in some wards to expedite the reporting of faults including water pipe bursts and leaks as well as supply interruptions. This is intended to reduce wastage of water.

A WhatsApp reporting line has also been launched to help customers speedily report faults.

Contractors that used to do new connections are also being trained to be upgraded to category A in order to increase the number of plumbers available to carry out repairs. The filling of vacant, funded maintenance posts is also being expedited to increase internal maintenance capacity.

These measures will help improve reporting and turnaround time.

Two arrested for murder

WO suspects were arrested on Monday morning for stabbing a 22-year-old man in Illovo on Sunday 30 October.

According to Amanzimtoti SAPS spokesperson Charlene van der Spuy on Sunday at about 2am the victim, Mzwakhe Maphumulo, was walking with friends from Lwandle Tavern, Illovo.

“Prior to this the friends were involved in a confrontation inside the tavern. When they left the tavern they were followed by the three suspects with whom they had the confrontation,” she said.

“It is alleged that his friends ran off when they realised they were being followed. The victim, who was not involved in the confrontation, did not run. As a result he was attacked by the suspects and stabbed beneath his chest.”

He was found on Thandi Mlala Road and was declared dead by paramedics.

Police were investigating the murder and on Monday 31 October Amanzimtoti SAPS detectives Sergeant Blessing Ngcobo, Constable Sibongiseni Zithumani and Constable Wendy Buthelezi went to the tavern.

“On viewing the video footage from the previous day, which showed the confrontation, the suspects were positively identified,” said Van der Spuy.

Two suspects were arrested shortly afterwards and will appear in court today (2 November). Police are searching for the third suspect.

In a separate incident on 22 October at 12.45pm, 27-year old Mxolisi Myende was stabbed with a knife at Sisonke Salon in Illovu Township and died.

“It is alleged that Myende was at the above mentioned location with friends and made jokes.

The suspect, 32-year old Lindani Richard Bhengu, allegedly did not like the jokes that was being made and stabbed the deceased,” Van der Spuy said.

A case of murder was opened at Amanzimtoti SAPS. The suspect was arrested, charged and appeared in Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on 25 October.

The case was remanded to 1 November for bail application He remained in custody.

The set date for ward committee elections is Sunday, 20 September, 2017 for all 110 wards.

The venue is the circus cite in Civic Road, Amanzimtoti for Ward 97.

Programme for the day: 8am to 9.30am - registration and verification from the voters roll 9.30am to 10.30am - opening and explanation of the election process by presiding officer 10.30am to 11.30am - nomination process 11.30am to 12.30pm - voting 12.30pm to 1.30pm - counting of votes 13.30 to 2pm announcement of results and closure.

Aspirant candidates must be on the voter’s roll of the ward to be eligible to be voted for as a board committee member.

Candidates have to be nominated and seconded and then voted into a maximum of 10 people, in line with 10 adopted portfolios.

The following portfolios were adopted during the previous term - job creations and skills development, solid waste, roads and stormwater, land reform and food security, safety and security, water and sanitation, sport and recreation, health, housing and youth and vulnerable groups.

“Every elected ward committee member would be expected to identify an individual from each of the areas to align with their specific portfolio, thus enlarging the ward committee component to 110 people [elected ward committee member as chairperson],” said Cllr André Beetge.

“The respective committees are further expected to meet on a monthly basis to collate portfolio specific information from across the ward that should in turn be presented [with recommendations] for debate at the monthly meeting under chairmanship of the ward councillor.”

He said in furthering the process, one would also have to consider the demographics of the ward, to ensure that residents with not only the necessary skills are elected, but that they are representative of all areas of the ward.

In the case of Ward 97, these areas are: 1) Illovo Beach-Panarama park, 2) Winklespruit, 3) Warner Beach, 4) St Winifreds-Astra park, 5) Illovo Glen, 6) Doonheights-Shulton Park, 7) Doonside, 8) Amanzimtoti central (Isundu road west), 9) Amanzimtoti Berea/Ezimangweni, 10) Amanzimtoti lower highway.

“The 10 elected ward committee members will receive a monthly stipend of R1 000 in lieu of outof-pocket expenses,” he said.

Kamalinee turns 35

Pupils then assembled in the grounds to form the shape of the number “35” where an aerial photo was taken by a drone.

Pink and blue helium balloons with special messages attached wishing the school well on its 35th birthday were released.

ET us “lean in to Pisa” this week.

I always wanted to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, not that it’s in the same category as the Eiffel Tower or Empire State Building, but because it has a sort of mystique about it. Easily reachable by train from either Savona or Genoa (or Milan or Rome for that matter), Pisa is a surprisingly small town.

From the train station, it is walking distance to a number of inexpensive, perfectly acceptable small hotels and in turn, it is an easy and delightful walk to the tower itself.

But what a shock - it is so small.

Well, relatively speaking that is. I was almost disappointed, but at the same time certainly intrigued because it most definitely does lean.

In 1987 it was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site and in 1990 it was closed, the bells were removed and it was properly anchored. It reopened in 2001, sturdy and safe and remains an icon.

A train trip to Pisa along the Italian coast from Genoa, passes through La Spezia, the gateway to the Cinque Terre (another whole chapter on its own and sheer delight), so combining the latter with Pisa makes for a wonderful trip.

Pisa is served by a nice little airport with connections to many European cities. As the Italians would say: Un’esperienza piacevole – saluti.

Humans make mistakes and it was a mistake in the 11th century, which resulted in this 14 500 ton leaning tower, which later became a symbol of civic pride. The construction of the tower began in 1173 and using columns and arches.

The tower represented an advanced understanding of weight and load characteristics, but what wasn’t accounted for was the base of the tower being built on a dense section of clay. The tower actually stood upright for five years, but after the completion of the third floor, it began to lean.

Construction was then halted for 100 years. Four more floors were then added and the tower leaned even more as a result of an attempt to compensate for the original tilt.

In 1319, the seventh floor was completed and the bell-chamber was added in 1732. It was then left alone

APPHIRE Coast Tourism (SCT) encourages locals and holidaymakers to head to Amanzimtoti main beach, take a ball, have some fun at the new volleyball net, take photos and post them on the Sapphire Coast Tourism Facebook Page.

“Part of our strategy this year is to offer more permanent structures on our beaches that offer entertainment and fun for holidaymakers, as well as locals to enjoy. The first project is to upgrade the volleyball nets on our local

beaches.

“A new volleyball net has been installed at Amanzimtoti Beach, with Winklespruit and Warner Beach to follow shortly,” SCT Chairperson, Monique Botha said.

She added that they are hoping to have Winklespruit and Warner Beach’s installed in time for the December holidays.

“We are also looking into installing ping-pong tables during the course of next year to ensure more fun time on the beach,” Botha said.

Sapphire Coast Tourism asked the

public to show their appreciation for this initiative by handling the new equipment with care. They thanked JM Signs for manufacturing and installing the volleyball net on Amanzimtoti main beach.

Locals and visitors can look forward to a full December holiday campaign, which will include plenty fun for children and adults. The programme will be publicised in due course.

Walk for diabetes awareness KEEP your eyes on diabetes, but put your best foot forward at the fifth annual 2016 Diabetes SA Global Walk and Wellness Ex­ po on Sunday, 13 November.

Designed to raise awareness about dia­ betes in KZN, this two­hour event begins at 8am at the Durban Beachfront, Amphithe­ atre­Bay of Plenty on the Lower Marine Pa­ rade as well as ending there.

Those who are either participating or just watching the five­kilometre fun walk are also invited to enjoy the Wellness Expo, which will not only provide sound advice on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but also offer free glucose and blood pressure test­ ing.

“Diabetes is the second highest cause of death in the eThekwini Municipality, yet this serious condition still remains in the shad­ ow of HIV/Aids and cancer,” says Jenny Rus­ sell, branch manager for Diabetes SA Dur­ ban, a non­profit organisation that pro­ vides support and wellness education for diabetics and communities.

When you have diabetes, your body is ei­

ther unable to make enough insulin, or it is unable to correctly use the insulin it does make.

As a result, the glucose in your blood­ stream cannot move into your cells to be used as energy and thus creates a build­up, resulting in high glucose levels.

Damage caused by elevated blood glu­ cose levels is irreversible. Diabetes has been linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, eye disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, lower limb amputations (worldwide, a low­ er limb is amputated every 30 seconds), sexual dysfunction as well as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

According to the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisa­ tion, a person dies from diabetes complica­ tions every six seconds.

There are currently 415 million people worldwide with diabetes, as opposed to 14 million with cancer and 35 million who are HIV positive. Every eight seconds, two peo­ ple develop diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation estimates that there

Russell points out that up to 80% of Type 2 diabetes is preventable by adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activ­ ity. This used to be the ambit of the “unfit, fat and over 40” group, but is now becoming

talent, Reinhard Zellhuber (19) capped off an unforgettable 2016 cycling season by claiming a third consecutive Ashburton National MTB Series title over the weekend, bringing down the curtain on his junior years of racing in emphatic style.

Aloft his Merida 96 Team issue, the 18 year-old rider overcame both his fellow competitors and the day’s hot and sandy conditions as he charged to victory in the Half-Marathon event of the seven-race series Rooiberg leg on Saturday, narrowly edging out junior national marathon champion Wessel Botha and JeanPierre Lloyd.

“I was caught a little off guard by the pace that the other guys set early on and they managed to open a 200metre gap over me quite quickly,” explains Zellhuber.

“Once I caught them I looked to save as much energy as possible, esmore common in young adults and children.

Worldwide, 200 children are becoming diabetic every day. However, the fastest growing group of Type 2’s is the 35­50 age group – the breadwinners of the family,” she adds.

Russell warns that the largest increase in diabetes in Durban is seen in low and mid­ dle income groups. This is mainly due to ris­ ing rates of urbanisation with associated in­ creased levels of obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet.

However, at least 50% of all people with diabetes are unaware of their condition – which makes it doubly important for every­ one to be tested on the day of the Diabetes Walk.

The five­kilometre walk is open to all and costs just R60 per person. Participants are even encouraged to bring their pet pooch along (on a leash).

The triumph came as Zellhuber’s fifth race win in this year’s series, having also finished on the top step of the podium at the Sabie, Van Gaalen, Ballito and Dullstroom clashes, handing him the series’ junior boys’ spoils for a second year running and adding to the youth crown he claimed in 2014.

“Winning the National MTB Series, especially for a third time, really means a lot,” says the 32Gi-Garrun Group-The Bicycle Company rider. “I’m really chuffed with how the season went for me this year.”

An added bonus will be an array of en­ tertainment on offer from participating in the free Zumba Class to Rhythmic Dance School dancers entertaining the expected 3000 strong entrants from the walk. Chil­ dren under six are free to enter and they too can enjoy the entertainment from jumping castles, Dilly the Clown as well as a beach hockey demonstration.

“This event can only grow from strength to strength with the support from our spon­ sors such as Sasa, ABI, Guard Smart, Aq­ uelle, Fit Healthcare, Tony Miller Promo­ tions, Netcare 911, Pure Studio and the KZN Health Department,” Russell says.
