ESIDENTS in Saltwood Road, Amanzimtoti are exasperated with the spate of theft and break-ins in their street.

The area is being targeted due to a huge overgrown and privately owned property bordering them at the back of their properties, providing the ideal hideout and escape route for criminals.

Earlier this month, Fever reported

on an Amanzimtoti domestic worker, who was held up by armed robbers.

She was ambushed by two men armed with knives as she worked on the property in Saltwood Road, at around 1pm on Monday, 17 October.

The men forced her into the house where they took two laptops before fleeing.

Last week the same resident was targeted at 5pm on Tuesday, 1 November.

“My husband and our children saw guys in our yard and chased them into

the bushes. At 7pm that same night a guy got over the fence again. The dogs were barking, but we were a bit slow.

They took a generator, but dropped it.

At midnight, the suspects were back in our yard again,” the resident, who wishes not to be named, said.

“We are now sleeping in shifts. I sleep until midnight and my husband is on duty from 12pm to 4pm, I wake up and he goes back to sleep until 6pm.

“We attempted to clear some of the bushes in front of our property, and on the side, as best we could with the help

of family and friends.

“While we were clearing the bushes, we actually saw suspects watching us, so two people had to stay in the house to watch it as we continued clearing the bushes.”

She said they bought the property a couple of months ago and never realised the crime situation was so bad.

“The previous owners claimed they only had one incident, but we heard later they had been ‘cleared out’.

We desperately need the council and the community’s help to find a way to clear the bushes on the property behind us.

“My friends and family are helping us to cut down bushes on the weekend,

but we cannot get through the area fast enough,” she said.

Reportedly, the residence had at least six break-ins over the past two weeks and they are not alone.

Fever reported the crime problem at their neighbour’s house earlier this year.

They also requested the council’s assistance, but it being a private property, council was reportedly unable to assist.

The neighbours have upgraded security on their property, which includes a burglar guarding service and clearing bushes at the back, but criminals still enter their yard.

“I appeal to our community, if anyone is able to assist us with the clearing, it will be deeply appreciated,” said the neighbour.

The prayer was aimed at minimising crime in Amanzimtoti, Bhekithemba, Folweni, Isipingo, Kwamakhuta, Umbumbulu, Umkomaas and Umlazi.

The prayers focused on police killings, murder, drug abuse, sexual offences and other major crimes.

THE Sector 2 Crime Forum will hold its next monthly meeting on 7 December at Warner Beach Senior Preparatory School.

Sector 2 includes areas south of Seadoone Road and Boundary Lane, Doonside, Doonheights, Shulton Park, Kingsburgh West, Illovo Glen, Warner Beach, St Winifreds, Astra Park, Winklespruit and Illovo Beach. Proof of residence will be necessary for admission.

“The Sector 2 community is invited to attend. All are welcome including neighbourhood watch groups, business owners, leaders, forums and associations, to attend the monthly meeting. The meeting starts at 6pm and lasts about an hour,” Captain Charlene van der Spuy said.

She said the purpose of the Sector Crime Forum is to create a relationship between the Sector 2 community and the SAPS in order to provide a personalised service with regard to sector policing and to work together in the fight against crime in the area.

Captain Van der Spuy said attendees will be brought up to date with criminal patterns and threats.

The meeting is also a place where people can relay their concerns and give their views to SAPS. “Everybody in the community is encouraged to attend the relevant Sector Crime Forum for their area and to be proactive in addressing crime.

Captain Van der Spuy again highlighted the importance of reporting every crime incident.

She said that suspects do not have to take anything in order for you to report the incident. It helps SAPS to identify crime hot spots and when other cases are reported in the area, they can be linked at a later stage and criminals convicted for their crimes.

‘Parents can be held liable’

F you would not put a certain message or image on a huge billboard, do not put it on social media is the advice Emma Sadleir offered parents and teenagers at a meeting on the dangers of social media at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre recently.

Addressing reputation management, Sadleir explained how the internet has made everybody a publisher.

“Twelve years ago, if you wanted your opinion to be published, you would have to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper. You would have had a lot of time to think about it and there was editorial control in place,” Sadleir said.

In stark contrast, is the instant publicity now available on the internet.

“People misunderstand the meaning of freedom of speech, no right is more important than any other right. The law says as soon as the content is seen by [just] one other person, it is seen in the eyes of the law as if it was published. If someone posts something on social media that you don’t like, the law says they must remove it on your request,” she explained.

“Digital content is dangerous content, phones get hacked, lost and stolen,” Sadleir said, and used the example of a celebrity who was in a long-term relationship and sexting her boyfriend. She thought she had deleted the pictures, but they were backed up to her iPad and ended up all over the internet. Her only escape was to change her name.

Addressing sexting, Sadleir said if you are under the age of 18 and take a naked picture of yourself, you are creating child pornography. According to the law, pornography is genitals, breasts and nudity, any image, real or however created to stimulate erotic feelings.

“It is incredibly stupid to take a picture of yourself naked. If you want

to take such a picture, hit yourself in the face hard. I know, people phone me when things go wrong.

“If you cannot resist, at least make sure you publish your face and genitals, but not on the same picture,” Sadleir advised.

She added that if you are sent any such content without the person involved’s consent, you can be prosecuted.

Sadleir used the example of a Pretoria pupil, who Googled a picture of two naked men sitting next to each other. The boy then pasted the face of the headmaster on one naked body and the head of the deputy head on another. He reportedly sent the picture to only one other fellow pupil.

“He then went to church and when he saw his fellow pupil, he said please don’t send it to anyone else, at which his friend replied he sent it to only one other person. By Monday the whole school had seen the picture.

The headmaster decided not to press charges, but the deputy filed charges for crimen injuria and deformation of character.

“Because they were older than 13, they were sued in their personal capacity and their parents had to

pay R800 000 in legal costs,” Sadleir said, stressing that parents may be liable for their children’s behaviour on social media.

She said cyber bullying, stalking and harassing in the real world or the online world are equally covered by the Harassment Act. “Don’t allow your children to take your cellphone to bed. Children need a break and we need to do screentime management,” she added.

Addressing privacy, the expert said that privacy is not dead. She explained that one’s sense of privacy will be lower when you are addressing 2 000 people than when you are talking to four people.

Similarly, your expectation of privacy is lower when you have an open Instagram account as opposed to a closed account.

“Parents, the more you look after your children’s privacy, the more right to privacy you have. Kim Kardashian’s children for instance have no expectation on privacy. Germany has placed a nationwide ban on parents placing pictures of their children on social media, because of the ‘embarrassment’ factor, rather than the danger. In France if children feel their parents did not look after their privacy, they can sue them.”

She advised schools to ensure they have closed Facebook pages and definitely no names should be published. Parents should have the opportunity to sign an opt out policy at the beginning of the year, if they do not want their children’s pictures published.

As a rule of thumb Sadleir recommended not posting anything online that you do not want to be seen by your parents, principal, police or potential employers.

Sadleir is a media law consultant, attorney and author from Johannesburg.

Sadleir’s area of expertise includes all aspects of print and electronic media with a particular focus on defamation, privacy and social media law. Much of her work involves creating social media strategies and policies for corporate and schools, et cetera.

SAPS water safety tips THE South African Police Service is warning peo­ ple to be extra cautious when swimming at the beaches, rivers or swimming pools. This warning comes after a number of people recently drowned in Durban and South Coast areas.

Educational campaigns and awareness were made in the province to promote safety at recrea­ tional facilities or at sea. As the festive season approaches, but drowning is an ever­present risk when people go on outings to rivers, beaches, dams and swimming pools. Many incidents of drowning are linked to the misuse of alcohol and recklessness.

Water safety tips: Safe swimming in the sea • Before entering the water, swimmers must take time to watch the waves and must avoid places where there is a strong backwash, obvious rip currents or a danger of being washed onto the rocks.

• Check the weather and the tides before you leave home – if the sea is too rough, you could be swept away.

• Only enter where the waves are straight and gentle.

• If you experience a strong current, get out of the sea, or at least do not go in deep.

• Never swim while you are intoxicated. Alco­ hol impairs judgment and unnecessary risks are taken. An intoxicated swimmer will tire more eas­ ily, increasing the chance of an accident or drown­ ing.

• Check with the lifeguards on duty what the surf conditions are before entering the sea.

• Only swim in designated areas that are su­ pervised by lifeguards.

• If the lifeguards give you directions or in­ structions from the beach, obey them.

• Look out for warning signs and flags – a red flag means it is dangerous to swim.

• A red­and­yellow flag means lifeguards are on duty and you should only swim in the area be­ tween the flags.

• Avoid swimming immediately after a big meal, as there is a danger of having cramps.

• Do not dive into shallow seawater – many paraplegics broke their necks by diving into shal­ low pools and dams.

• Do not swim in river mouths, in dirty water, very early in the mornings, early evenings or after it had rained as shark activity increases in these conditions. Also do not swim when bluebottles are present as they are poisonous.

• Never leave a young child unattended near water and never make a child responsible for an­ other child – not even for five minutes. Teach chil­ dren to always ask permission to go near water.

• If a child is missing, check the water first.

Seconds count in preventing drowning or perma­ nent disability.

• Swimming aids, such as water wings or noo­ dles, are fun toys for kids, but they should never be used instead of approved flotation devices. ­ Supplied.

There are many patients who do not have medical aid and have very little, if any, financial support, then this battle suddenly becomes a creature of a totally different nature.

Helping those who need it most is therefore the driving force behind the “pink trees” initiative.

Photo winner, inspired by nature

PRABASHNEE NAIDOO MATRICULANTS are in full swing with exams and other pupils are launching into the wave of formal assessments.

This week we look at tips for the exam morning: • Although preparations for exams begin in advance, the night before is crucial. Go to bed early, so you get sufficient rest. Your body and mind needs rest to perform at its optimal.

• On the morning of the exam, wake up a little earlier than usual so that you do not need to rush through your routine. This will also ensure that you reach the exam venue in good time. Remember poor weather conditions, backed-up traffic and other unforeseen circumstances can lead to possible delays. So get up earlier, to get to the venue earlier.

• Have a healthy breakfast. Pack a snack for after the exam.

• Make sure you have all the necessary stationery. Of course, you would have packed all of this the night before, just do a quick double check before you leave home.

• Arrive at least 15 minutes early at the exam venue. Ensure that you know your seat number and are familiar with the seating arrangements.

• Chat with your friends, try to relax.

• Do not cram work during the morning. Hard work beforehand will ensure that you are well prepared. Cramming often leads to confusion, perhaps something that you already knew will now become blurred.

• Go to the toilet before the exam begins. Exams are long and there is no time to waste.

• Carry a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the exam.

Parents you can offer your love and support. You play a vital role in offering comfort and understanding. You can do this by ensuring a healthy breakfast and snack is ready. Assist by having the necessary stationery and equipment available. Make sure there is no stress in the household on the morning of the exam. Pupils do not need to deal with any other stressful situations, other than facing the stress of the exam.

Pray together and encourage your child to embrace the challenge.

Never give up and always strive to be the best you can be.

“The oncologist, who treated me for throat cancer, said that I got a second chance, that I will look at the world differently and I will appreciate even the smallest flower I see.

“I bought a Nikon L810 bridge camera and took it with me on my daily walk with the dogs in Ilanda Wilds at Hutchinson Park. By looking around and observing nature as part of creation that many take for granted, was revealed to me.

“Insects, spiders, flowers and all I see are now the subjects for my photography,” he said.

Calitz used his Nikon CoolpixL810 bridge camera on auto. (ISO 400, 1/125 second and Fstop 5.9) and took the photograph at 7.34am.

He enjoys taking photos of life and nature and nearly always has a camera with him.

“I get the most satisfaction from shooting insects, especially makro, and wildlife,” he says.

The photograph was taken at the Coastal KZN TVET College, at the central administration office in KwaMakhutha, where Calitz is managing the employee wellness programme and the financial aid unit.

Amanzimtoti Sports Centre Toti trail run THE Toti trail run takes place on Fri­ day 11 November. This is a fund­rais­ ing initiative by the Amanzimtoti Sports Club to improve facilities at the club and bring the Toti and sur­ rounding communities together.

The run starts at 6pm at the Amanzimtoti Sports Club and finish­ es there as well.

Adults pre­paid entry fees are R80 for the eight­kilometre route and R40 for the four­kilometre route.

U16 pre­paid entries are R60 for the eight kilometre and R30 for four kilo­

metre. Pre­entries close on 10 No­ vember.

Race­day entries cost an extra R20. Race­day registration takes place at Amanzimtoti Sports Club from 4.30pm to 6pm. Amanzimtoti Tennis Club news The drizzling rain did not deter our so­ cial players on Saturday and some good games were played.

Weekend league results have now been received. Our men’s team were placed 5th in 4th division, 1st ladies are 4th in 1st division. Congratulations to our 2nd Ladies who won the 4th division and will be promoted to 3rd division in the new year.

Our midweek ladies’ Christmas lunch will take place on Wednesday 7

Local Durban celebrities and Movember ambassadors joined the two shave-off events on 1 November.

Lotus FM’s Neville Pillay and Ryan Naicker were at Nev The Barber in Durban North for the 10am shave-off.

The duo are gearing up for outside broadcasts throughout the month when they will be challenging and mo(tivating) their male listeners to

help support Movember and raise money.

For Pillay, Movember is personal.

“As I enter my 40s I've become acutely aware of the challenges faced by older men especially, and one of those is embarrassment. Men feel embarrassed to talk about things like testicular cancer or anything relating to male sexual health. I want to show them it's perfectly natural to be aware of and talk about cancer and go for check-ups.”

Also at the morning event was Mo Sista Jane Bailey-Smith from the band Veranda Panda, magician Mo Magic and local surfing and lifesaving legend, Brandon Ribbink, who lost his mother to skin cancer, and has firsthand experience about the difference that awareness and prevention can make.

“This [skin cancer] was preventable,” he said.

As a man, who is constantly in the water and in the sun Ribbink said he is acutely aware of his health.
