MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto­ ries.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka­ ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

The Fever would like to wish all our fantastic cli­ ents and readers a wonderfully happy festive sea­ son and here’s to welcoming 2015 in style.

Boat capsizes on Toti main beach A

BOAT overturned on Monday morning, 10 October on Amanzimtoti main beach.

Netcare 911 paramedics were alerted by Amanzimtoti lifeguards that a boat had overturned just behind the backline and reports from the scene indicate that the boat was lifting shark nets that were entangled when a wave capsized them.

“Paramedics arrived at the beach and found that lifeguards had raced to the men’s assistance with their inflatable rescue boat. After a brilliant rescue effort they brought six people to shore, one, the skipper, with serious injuries while the other five had escaped with fatigue and scratches,” said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.

Revamped subway anniversary hailed On Heritage Day, 24 September, 2015, My Sapphire CommUnity took action to restore and revive the pedestrian subway in Warner Beach so that locals and visitors would have easy and safe access to and from the beach and stores.

The project was by no means easy given the state of structural disrepair, filth and excrement, combined with loiterers and job-seekers frequenting the area. My Sapphire CommUnity and local businesses and Sapphire Coast Tourism, assisted by volunteers and unemployed labourers got the process going. Since then, the subway has been totally transformed and more people are making use of it.

Apart from repainting and decorating the subway adding colour, the gardens were landscaped and extra lighting installed, with some of the fittings being painted the red and white colours of a lighthouse, increasing safety and adding a festive touch. Maintenance and cleaning on a regular basis is carried out by Thembise Ndlovu, who was previously unemployed.

Next on the list: the installation of sponsored cameras and “hopes” for night patrolling in and around the area to make the subway safe especially in the evenings.

He said: "The government believes that the #FeesMustFall campaign is more than just a protest. It has got out of hand and looks like there are other people behind the cam­ paign, who want to destroy the ruling party.

WHAT started as a campaign to lower higher education fees around the country has taken a drastic and violent turn for the worst.

The #FeesMustFall campaign has seen students violently protesting and damaging university property. Students are slowly forming a division as some remain spell­ bound by the campaign, while others are concerned for their safety as well as their ed­ ucation as campuses are forced to close.

Many matriculants are also concerned as the destruction of university property will negatively impact on their studies next year.

The campaign started as students felt the exorbitant fees were preventing them from completing their degrees, thus slowing down the process for them to earn a living.

“Some students went to private schools where school fees were over R50 000. I am surprised that the parents were able to af­ ford school fees then, but now they demand free tertiary education.

“We also believe that the people who started the campaign are those who were not paying attention to their studies during the year and now have realised they will fail their courses.

“Some students are there to study and are serious about their education, however, they are now caught up in this wrong­doing.

“Pupils in matric are afraid and concerned about this because if it goes on for too long it means they won't be able to further their education any time soon."

He urged students to commence with classes and think about how this will affect their future.

HIS month’s picturesque photo of the Nungwane Falls, just outside Amanzimtoti, has made Agustin Ritacco the September winner of the Sapphire Coast Photo Competition.

“The Nungwane waterfall is a 100m waterfall, just 15kms inland from Amanzimtoti as the crow flies, and most of us don’t even know it is there.

“It is quite a challenging 4x4 road - a couple of hours drive - that leads you to, and ends at the top of, this waterfall.

After an adventurous drive, you are greeted by the majestic sight of this waterfall and who wouldn’t snap a picture,” Ritacco said.

He said he started using film SLR cameras from when he was around 12.

“I enjoy photographing and being out in nature, but I also love travel and adventure photography. The first thing I bought when I finished univer-

sity and started working was a Canon 300D digital SLR,” he said.

For the winning photograph Ritacco used a Canon DSLR at 1/50s, f/8 and ISO200 settings.

“The picture was taken in the late

afternoon. Once you get to the waterfall, it is a pretty tricky walk to position yourself to view the fall from the front, but definitely the best view,” he explained.

A variety of seaside communities extend from Athlone Park and Amanzimtoti, its suburbs of Doonside, Warner Beach, Winkelspruit, Illovo Beach and Karridene, and the coastal resorts of Umgababa, Widenham, Umkomass and Clansthal.

Also included in the region is the industrial hub of Southgate Park and the historical base of Adams Mission. Other centres comprise KwaMakutha, Ezimbokodweni, Magabheni, Umbumbulu, Kingsburgh, St Winifred’s, Lovu and Umnini.

Another scenic route to the waterfall is offered by Gary’s Horses, for transitional to seasoned horse riders.

“Seven years ago, I looked into doing a waterfall ride to Nungwane Waterfalls that was shown to me by Cyprian Ndlovu. After many hours of working on routes and planning, we did our first trip in September 2013.

“This ride is for intermediate to experienced riders. We hope to do this on a more regular basis especially during the winter months when it is cooler for the horses. I have well-informed grooms, who double up as guides and a range of well-bred disciplined horses of all sizes,” owner Gary Coetzee said.

HE Rotary Club of Amanzimtoti is going to be working around the clock from now until the end of December, selling material and encouraging the community to wrap trees or pillars in front of their houses and offices in pink material. The initiative covers the area from Toti and surrounding areas, down the South Coast.

“This initiative will help raise much-needed funds for Khanya Hospice, which offers free palliative nursing care to patients diagnosed with cancer, on a daily basis,” CEO, Neil McDonald said.

“Helping those who need it most is therefore the driving force behind the ‘Pink Trees’ initiative,” said McDonald.

The 2016 range continues with the proven 2.5 and 3.0 litre diesel engines. The powerful 3.0­litre DTEQ turbocharged diesel with 130kW and 380Nm from the common rail direct injection turbo­diesel does duty in top of the range models. Combined cycle fuel con­ sumption is 7.9 litres per 100km for 4x4 double cab and extended cab models, dropping to 7.7 litres per 100km for the 4x2 versions. The single cab 4x2 also returns a figure of 7.7 litres per 100km, with the 4x4 single cab version consuming eight litres per 100km.

A key feature of LX models is a touch screen info­ tainment system with satellite navigation, internet, WiFi, and smartphone integration. The screen – a 1080p high­definition TFT unit with a 6.5­inch dimen­ sion ­ also acts as the display when browsing or using the DVD player.

The rear park assist reverse camera is now inte­ grated into the rear tail­gate handle on all LX double cab models.

Passive entry and start system (Pess) is a keyless entry with start­stop ignition button and is standard on LX double cab models. Leather is available as stan­ dard on the 4x4 auto and manual double cabs and as an option on 4x2 double­cab derivatives.

The second powertrain option is the 2.5­litre DTEQ common­rail direct injection turbo­diesel, which was introduced last year with 100kW and 320Nm. The 2.5 comes with a variable geometry turbocharger similar to the 3.0 DTEQ engine, which allows for fine manage­ ment of boost pressure.

With a 20% increase in torque at 1 200 rpm and a much wider power band compared to its predeces­ sor, all Isuzu models powered by this unit enjoy vastly improved driveability.

Two workhorse models, the 250 Base Single Cab (Leed) and 250 Fleetside single cab (Leed), are equipped with the direct jnjection 4­cylinder 2.5 diesel engine that produces 58 kW and 170 Nm and has a combined fuel consumption figure of 7.9 l/100 km.

Revised suspension for a smoother ride Local engineers covered over 100 000 kilometres refining the suspension of the latest model for a smoother rider on all road surfaces.

Hi­Rider 4X2 models received new front and rear dampers while 4X4 models received revised rear dampers only. Rebound control was refined to have more compliant characteristics at both low and high piston damper speeds.

The end result is a smoother ride across a greater variety of terrain i.e. improved isolation from high way road vibration and reduced harshness from high im­ pact. ­ Supplied.

Sapphire Coast Marathon on Sunday SUNDAY sees the running of the Sapphire Coast Marathon, hosted by Amanzimtoti Athletics Club.

Due to the damage on the railway line no train ride will be offered this year.

Members and motorists are reminded that on Sunday over 2 000 runners will start the race at Riverside Road, Hutchinson Park at 6am.

Runners will follow the following route - up Ndongeni Drive into School

Road down Seadoone Road into Kingsway Road through Warner Beach, Winklespruit into Illovo past Karridene Hotel turning at Umkomaas and returning on the same route to the finish at Hutchinson Park.

Marshalls and Metro Police will assist motorists on Sunday morning and the club apologises for any inconvenience or delays with traffic flow.

Cut-off for the race is 11am and the major congestion will be at the cut-off

finish at Lords and Legends.

There are nine water tables along the route providing water and CocaCola and at the 32km marker at Karridene Hotel.

Snacks will be supplied for runners, provided by the hotel.

McLachlan managed to come back with a solid 74 in the final round to hold on for second place.

Third place was shared by Royal Durban Country Club’s Sebastian Terblanche and Kyalami Country Club’s Eric Wowor who both finished on 227.

“All of the players felt it was very difficult because of the South Coast weather. I think under the circumstances I played well. I had a few mistakes now and then but came through and I did really well,” said Terblanche.
