It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Gemma Borchard came third in the form with a full house of distinctions and is the 2016 female dux.

She has been accepted for veterinary science at Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital and is one of only 100 pupils accepted countrywide every year, so this is a huge achievement for this Kingsway pupil, and Amanzimtoti.

Linking education to ensure food security >> Rotary International theme is ‘Serving Humanity’

HIS year’s theme for Rotary International is “Serving Humanity”, which captures the essence of Rotary and its work over more than a century.

Rotarians realise that the purpose of life is to serve humanity with a humane consciousness that will propel a deeper sense of love, peace, joy, truth, compassion, fairness and benefit to all in a world challenged by conflict, diseases, poverty and turmoil.

When the Rotary Club of Amanzimtoti announced its plans, investment and commitments to early childhood development (ECD) at its 50th anniversary in June 2015, the aim was to assist in the development of the competence of early childhood teachers to contribute to the holistic development of the child as an outcome.

As club members became more involved in the challenging and exciting opportunity that early childhood education presents, their interest deepened to incorporate opportunities for environmental education that supports sustainable living, health, food security and livelihood.

They believe that providing opportunities for children to be responsible towards the environment and to care for others begins at a young age.

“The benefit of gardening projects is that it teaches children where food comes from and develops their scientific and environmental awareness. It also encourages healthier food choices and improves learning skills,” said Iris Canham, who is heading the

We are concerned about society becoming too reliable on instant gratification and losing the essence of Ubuntu. We believe that environmental education helps children learn and connect with the real world, it teaches patience, responsibility, to appreciate the natural world and appreciate interdependence,” said Canham.

The roll-out of the ECD training began with Mother of Peace (MoP) PrePrimary School in Illovo. Rotary Club Amanzimtoti President Aneska Dupont invited WESSA, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa, which works with schools and teachers to support environmental education to visit the project that has started at MoP. Rotary is seeking to collaborate with WESSA on environmental education for young pupils.

“We believe environmental education is a process. To get children interested or to teach ‘green issues’ children must understand their own environment first, and what better way than first understanding the garden and the opportunities for learning this presents. They must learn about local biodiversity. The permaculture garden at MoP provides an ecological design process and a food producing ecosystem that will spark interest and understanding,” said Canham.

To encourage parent and community participation, workshops to equip people with skills that will aid a more food secure nation will be held at MoP, Illovo.

Amanzimtoti Sports Centre Toti trail run The Toti trail run takes place on Friday 11 November. This is a fund­ raising initiative by the Amanzim­ toti Sports Club to improve facili­ ties at the club and bring the Toti and surrounding communities to­ gether.

The run starts at 6pm at the Amanzimtoti Sports Club and fin­ ishes at the centre as well.

Adults pre­paid entry fees are R80 for the eight kilometre route and R40 for the four kilometre route. U16 pre­paid entries are R60 for the eight kilometre and R30 for four kilometre. Pre­entries close on 10 November.

Race day entries cost an extra R20. Race day registration takes place at Amanzimtoti Sports Club from 4.30pm to 6pm.

HE Toyota Avanza has come a long way since its initial introduction as a comfortable and affordable multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that moved many people from one place to another. True to its name (Avanza is derived from an Italian word “avanzata”, which means advance), the Avanza has – over the years – evolved into a more sophisticated MPV that boasts a lot passenger-like qualities.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) is proud to announce the addition of

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) – including Brake Assist System and Traction Control – as a standard safety feature on all Avanza models. Anti-Lock Breaking System (ABS) is standard across the range. The latest safety enhancements come exactly a year after the addition of Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), three-point centre seatbelt, driver and passenger airbags, ISOFIX restraint points and centre headrests for the second seating row.

“The current generation Avanza

has been remodelled continuously, with a variety of improvements in style and capabilities, since its launch in 2012. While it has become smarter on the inside, its exterior looks have not been neglected. tion Avanza feels more like a passenger car compared to its predecessor.

This was achieved courtesy of a lowered instrument panel which has improved driver visibility and a centrally located cluster. Occupant luggage space was also addressed and all three rows have ample legroom and kneeroom. The extra space was created by adjusting the shape and placement of the seatbacks and door trim.

All those who have been inside the current model would have observed that the driver is treated to a revised instrument cluster, adopting striking amber hued inserts, a silver outer bezel and white night-time illumination for greater visibility and user friendliness. All models have an Eco indicator to provide feedback to the driver on economical driving – thereby contributing to even better fuel economy.

Despite these improvements, the Avanza has always maintained its status as a value for money proposition.

While sales in the MPV segment have reduced significantly over the years locally, the popularity of the Avanza has

consecutive years.

Matfield began his Springbok career at the age of 24, and was widely regarded the best lock in world rugby during his decade of playing for the Springboks. He has played more green and gold rugby than any player.

Matfield has captained the Vodacom Bulls to three Vodacom Superugby titles in 2007, 2009 and 2010, the Tri-Nations in 2004 and 2009 and the Rugby World Cup in 2007. In 2008 he was inducted into the University of Pretoria Hall of Fame.
