Bullying at school raises concerns >> Pupils went to school with weapons

A

GANG fight involving pupils from two secondary schools in Tongaat raised concerns in the community as final exams get under way.

A fight broke out last month between pupils from Nkosibomvu Secondary and Fairbreeze Secondary in Tongaat.

According to information from the school and members of school governing body, pupils from Nkosibomvu assaulted a Grade 9 pupil from Fairbreeze last month.

Parents told Weekly it was unclear what caused the fight.

during this time when our children are writing examinations. A Grade 9 pupil from Nkosibomvu fought with another pupil from Fairbreeze.

“The two pupils exchanged words then the other boys from Nkosibomvu allegedly ganged up on the other pupil and assaulted him.

“The following day a group of pupils from Fairbreeze came to Nkosibomvu armed with dangerous weapons seeking revenge. We fear the ongoing fighting at schools will interrupt other pupils who are writing exams,” he said.

OLICE in Tongaat destroyed more than 200 dagga trees in La Mercy last week.

However, a fight regarding the illegal dagga cultivation is far from over as the police were unable to make any arrests.

Marie said the dagga plants were planted between the shacks in Pholani informal settlement.

She told the Weekly that numerous attempts were made to trace the owner of the dagga plantation, and residents said they didn’t know who the owner might be.

“The police made inquiries, but nobody gave us tangible leads about the owner of the plantation. Police were unable to make arrests and all dagga plants were destroyed,” she said.

“We told them to reconcile. Some of the pupils were carrying dan­ gerous weapons. We told them to stop fighting ­ we hope they got the message,” he said.

Nkosibomvu principal Sifiso Cebekhulu confirmed that pupils from his school were at loggerheads with pupils from a nearby school.

“We can confirm that there was a gang fight involv­ ing our pupils and a pupil from Fairbreeze Secondary.

We called a meeting on Thursday and invited parents in bid to resolve the issue. We confiscated weapons from some of the pupils. One pupil was in possession of pepper spray, and it was also confiscated,” he said.

Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj­Marie said the police responded.

“Police attended to a complaint at school. There was no case opened,” she said.

In a separate incident, three teenage girls from Belverton Secondary in Tongaat were suspended from the school for unruly behaviour after a video emerged on social media, which showed the three girls involved in a fight.

A teacher from Belverton, who did not want to be named, confirmed that the Grade 9 pupils were sus­ pended for unruly behaviour.

“The incident took place outside school premises.

We called parents and the police and the matter was resolved the following day.

“The three girls were suspended from school until further notice.

“From our side, as the school, we have no idea why the pupils were fighting,” he said.

Tongaat residents vented their anger on social media when the video showing the girls fighting went viral last week. However, police spokesperson Maha­ raj­Marie confirmed that no case had been opened.

Spokesperson for KZN Department of Education Sihle Mlotshwa condemned incidents of violence at schools.

“From the beginning of the year our teachers have been working hard to teach pupils and equip them with necessary skills. However, along the way we had incidents of violence in some of the schools.

HE Women’s Forum Skills Centre embarked on a feeding scheme programme in Tongaat where they provided meals to pupils from Victoria Primary on Tuesday 1 November.

Centre members fed more than 50 pupils and mentally challenged residents.

Pushpa Govender is spearheading the feeding programme that aims to bring smiles to impoverished residents and pupils.

“We visited Golden Steps in Verulam and fed mentally challenged children on 19 July.

“Our objective is to eradicate poverty in our communities.

“It breaks my heart to see children coming from needy families going to school and not having a balanced diet.”

She said the idea to start a feeding programme was conceived early this year.

Reaction Unit SA crime report were dispatched to Wick Street in the Veru­ lam CBD after receiving a call from a mem­ ber of public reporting an individual being assaulted.

Upon arrival it was established that while the man suffered seizures in the Veru­ lam CBD the previous day, the suspect and his accomplice robbed him of his wallet and cellphone.

The victim’s friends tracked the sus­ pect’s location and apprehended him in Wick Street the next day. A mob gathered at the scene and assaulted the man. The suspect led officers and the victim’s friends to an abandoned business premises where the wallet containing the victim’s driver’s li­ cense was recovered.

He claimed that he had sold the cell­ phone to an unknown individual for R40.

The proceeds of the sale were used to pur­ chase drugs.

Robbery victim stabbed: Verulam A 40­year­old man was stabbed twice during a robbery in Verulam on Saturday 29 October.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to Antelope Place in Mountview, Verulam after receiving a call from the victim’s family requesting medical assistance for the injured man.

Upon arrival it was established that the victim was returning from work when he was dropped off on the R102.

While crossing into Mountview on foot he was accosted by two suspects who were armed with knives.

The suspects robbed the victim of his Samsung cellphone and his wallet before stabbing him twice.

They then fled the scene in an un­ known direction.

The victim managed to walk to his home on Antelope Place when his family contacted Rusa for assist­ ance.

Paramedics stabilised the man on scene before transporting him to hospital. ­ Supplied.

THE Tongaat Crime Prevention unit arrested six suspects and confiscated over R12 000 counterfeit bank notes.

The police were acting on information received about six suspects in a blue Honda in possession of suspected fake notes in the Tongaat CBD. The crime prevention members acted on the information and upon arrival at the scene the suspects fled in their Honda towards Buffelsdale.

Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Manisha MaharajMarie said: “Police chased the vehicle and accosted it on the R102 in Buffelsdale.

Six suspects were found in possession of counterfeit R200 notes.

“The overall amount was R12 800 and all suspects were arrested.

Elderly man injured while visiting grave: Verulam An 80­year­old man was seriously in­ jured after he slipped and fell while visiting a grave site of a relative at the Verulam Cemetery on Wick Street, on Monday 24 Oc­ tober.

At approximately 1pm members of Re­ action Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dis­ patched to the scene after receiving a call from the victim’s business associate re­ questing medical assistance for the injured man.

Upon arrival the victim was found seat­ ed on a concrete pathway bleeding exces­ sively due to a broken leg after the fall.

Rusa Medics stabilised the Durban resi­ dent on the scene before transporting him to hospital.

Business robbery: Verulam At approximately 7.45pm on Monday 24 October members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to a business on Ma­ rula Circle in Trenance Park, Verulam after receiving reports of an armed robbery.

Upon arrival it was established that four suspects armed with firearms gained entry into the tuck shop and robbed the victim of two cellphones. The suspects then fled the scene in a white BMW. Officers patrolled the area in search of the suspects however no arrests were made Theft of motor vehicle: Tongaat Be on the lookout for a white Isuzu 2.8D bakkie with registration NT 218 310. The ve­ hicle was stolen from Thorntree Avenue, Tongaat on 26 October.

The bakkie had pink stripes on the sides.

It was low on fuel and had no security devi­ ces at the time of the theft.

Diwali committee feeds needy families WEEKLY REPORTER THE Tongaat Diwali Celebration Committee (TDCC) distributed 300 food hampers to the needy families in Tongaat recently.

The intention was to provide community service to all residents and assist those in need.

Chairperson of the TDCC Prem Misthry said: “Last year’s Diwali hamper distribution was a remarkable success. The TDCC spread a little cheer this year by contributing another 400 food hamper drive. The organisation’s main objectives are to provide a community service - irrespective of race,

religion, colour, language or political affiliation,” he said.

Misthry said each hamper contained 2kg rice, 2.5kg white sugar, 2.5kg cake flour and 2lt cooking oil.

“However, in order to provide such a service, funds are needed. Over the years, we have made every effort to collect funds to enable us to provide for those in need. With the passing of years, this becomes more difficult. The present state of economy and retrenchments are some of the reason for this. I would like to thank the sponsors, management and staff of the TDCC ” he said.

A Belvedere resident Margaret Naidoo (64) said: “Residents in Watsonia are struggling to make ends meet, but today they got something to put on the table. The Tongaat Celebration Committee brought smiles to the people of Watsonia and we really appreciate it.

I hope next year we will make the target of 180 000 for Diwali hampers,” she said.

Eye centre brings ‘light’ to patients ANDILE SITHOLE

A

S many people throughout the world walk around with a sight threatening disease that clouds the lens of the eyes, Tongaat Eye Centre started a pilot project to assist residents with cataracts in their eyes.

The centre carried out free cataracts surgeries (a procedure performed to remove a cloudy lens from the eye) for two needy patients from Tongaat and Stanger to commemorate World Eye Sight Awareness Month in October.

The surgeries were done at KZN Day Clinic in Umhlanga on 26 October.

A Tongaat resident Rajen Naidoo (74) said: “I used to have cloudy vision in the mornings and my sight was blur.

I saw an advert in Coastal Weekly two months ago and decided to visit the Tongaat Eye Centre. With the help of the doctor, I was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes which were severe. In the interim the doctor from Tongaat Eye Centre was very kind to get me into the outreach programme. My cataracts operation was done at KZN Day Clinic in Umhlanga. I am very grateful to the doctors and the staff at Tongaat Eye Centre and KZN Day Clinic.”

Another patient Phillipine Mkhize (69) was ecstatic and encouraged other senior citizens to be aware of cataracts.

Mkhize, a resident from Stanger, said she saw an advert in the Stanger Weekly inviting residents to visit the centre in Tongaat.

“I started to feel pain in my right eye in 2014. I have been in and out of hospitals trying to get help, but all my attempts were unsuccessful. My brother then suggested that I visit the Tongaat Eye Centre in Tongaat. Today I am happy that I can see again after two years of struggling to get assistance.”

Swami Lokasangrahananda formed a strong alliance with the centre in a bid to help the community.

“We are also inviting other doctors willing to give back to the community to join us. Our intention is to encourage doctors to volunteer and see one patient free of charge in a month. We are looking at getting more doctors who will volunteer their services to the community.

More doctors will help us achieve our goals,” he said.

The eye surgeon at Tongaat Eye Centre Dr Lavindren Naidoo thanked companies and people who supported them in their initiative.

The people and companies who contributed were Anton Muller and the staff of KZN Day Clinic, National Medical Supplies, Alcon and Doctor K Govender (anaesthetist).

“It is only through such generous sponsorship that such outreach efforts can grow in magnitude,” Naidoo said.

Practice manager Sharen Naidoo, who was also involved in the preparations and distribution of food hampers to patients after the surgery in commemoration of Diwali, said: “We feel that this surgery fell at an especially auspicious time for these patients as Diwali marks the triumph of light over darkness and in many ways, these patients were removed from the darkness of blindness and brought into the light by this sight saving surgery.”

Naidoo said that outreach activities are carried out by eye care professionals during the month of October in order to lessen the burden of blindness in the society.

She said that cataracts is a term is used to describe the clouding of the natural lens of the eye.

“A clouded lens can be compared to a window that is frosted or fogged with steam.

“When the lens become cloudy, the light reaching the retina is blurred, distorted and vision is affected. This clouded lens is called a cataract and it must be removed before vision can be restored. Cataracts are not cancerous.

“They can be treated with surgical procedures performed in theatres,” she said.

HE all-new Lexus LC coupe is the most torsionally rigid vehicle the luxury marque has ever produced, according to the flagship car’s global chief engineer Koji Sato.

Mr Sato said the LC featured levels of rigidity that surpassed even that of the limited production LFA V10-powered supercar.”The LC is 60 per cent more rigid than the current Lexus GS performance sedan, which results in sharper and more precise, linear handling,” Mr Sato said.

“In fact, the LC goes further with its world-class rigidity resulting in a smoother and more lateral level of performance.”

Mr Sato added that the LFA development programme had played a major role in influencing key construction elements of the LC.”You will find the carbon fibre, composite technology we developed for the LFA in the lightweight parts we have designed for the LC, such as the compression-moulded sheets of re-impregnated carbon fibre used for the inner door panels,” he said.

The dedicated focus on outright dynamic ability for LC also led to the achievement of outstanding weight distribution - a 52:48 front-rear balance for the LC 500 V8 and 51:49 for the LC 500h hybrid model.

Mr Sato also remarked that Lexus International chief branding officer and master driver, Akio Toyoda had

driven the LC at every key stage of development and had returned crucial feedback.

“Mr Toyoda has driven the LC at all the important stages during the car’s development and will continue to do so.

“After taking the car around the Shibetsu proving ground in northern Japan in snowy conditions, he made several requests about how we might improve its characteristics, so you can be sure it is going to be a fun car to drive.”

The LC 500 and LC 500h are underpinned by the new Lexus front-engine/ rear-wheel-drive, GA-L (Global Architecture for Luxury vehicles) platform.

The LC 500 features a 5.0-litre V8 engine mated to the world’s first 10speed, automatic transmission in a luxury vehicle.

The LC 500h features a breakthrough Multi Stage Hybrid System (MSHS), which marries the elements of a traditional full hybrid powertrain - including a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, powerful electric motor and lithiumion battery pack - to a four-speed automatic gearbox mounted at the rear of the hybrid transmission.

The result is high levels of efficiency and engaging performance, with an enhanced, direct connection between the accelerator pedal and vehicle acceleration. The LC 500 will go on sale in South Africa in the first half of 2017.

Walk for diabetes awareness KEEP your eyes on diabetes, but put your best foot forward at the fifth annual 2016 Diabetes SA Global Walk and Wellness Ex­ po on Sunday, 13 November.

Designed to raise awareness about dia­ betes in KZN, this two­hour event begins at 8am at the Durban Beachfront, Amphithe­ atre­Bay of Plenty on the Lower Marine Pa­ rade as well as ending there.

Those who are either participating or just watching the five­kilometre fun walk are also invited to enjoy the Wellness Expo, which will not only provide sound advice on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but also offer free glucose and blood pressure test­ ing.

“Diabetes is the second highest cause of death in the eThekwini Municipality, yet this serious condition still remains in the shad­ ow of HIV/Aids and cancer,” says Jenny Rus­ sell, branch manager for Diabetes SA Dur­ ban, a non­profit organisation that pro­ vides support and wellness education for diabetics and communities.

When you have diabetes, your body is ei­ ther unable to make enough insulin, or it is unable to correctly use the insulin it does make.

As a result, the glucose in your blood­ stream cannot move into your cells to be used as energy and thus creates a build­up, resulting in high glucose levels.

Damage caused by elevated blood glu­ cose levels is irreversible. Diabetes has been linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, eye disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, lower limb amputations (worldwide, a low­ er limb is amputated every 30 seconds), sexual dysfunction as well as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

According to the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisa­ tion, a person dies from diabetes complica­ tions every six seconds.

There are currently 415 million people worldwide with diabetes, as opposed to 14 million with cancer and 35 million who are HIV positive. Every eight seconds, two peo­ ple develop diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation estimates that there will be 592 million people with diabetes by 2035.

Russell points out that up to 80% of Type 2 diabetes is preventable by adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activ­ ity. This used to be the ambit of the “unfit, fat and over 40” group, but is now becoming more common in young adults and children.

Worldwide, 200 children are becoming diabetic every day. However, the fastest growing group of Type 2’s is the 35­50 age group – the breadwinners of the family,” she adds.

Russell warns that the largest increase in diabetes in Durban is seen in low and mid­ dle income groups. This is mainly due to ris­ ing rates of urbanisation with associated in­ creased levels of obesity, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet.

However, at least 50% of all people with diabetes are unaware of their condition – which makes it doubly important for every­ one to be tested on the day of the Diabetes Walk.

The five­kilometre walk is open to all and costs just R60 per person. Participants are even encouraged to bring their pet pooch along (on a leash).

Chil­ dren under six are free to enter and they too can enjoy the entertainment from jumping castles, Dilly the Clown as well as a beach hockey demonstration.

Panthers celebrate Diwali ABOUT 20 Tongaat Panthers Athletic Club members took part in a special Diwali run on Sunday spreading love and unity amongst the club members in keeping with the message of Deepavali where good always triumphs over evil.

The morning kicked off with the lighting of lamps and fireworks before the members hit the R102 participating in the 12km and 15km run/walk.

Members are reminded that there is only two legs left before the Thinnys League Challenge comes to completion for 2016.

The annual awards function takes place on 25 November at 6.30pm at the Hot Shots Nite Club in Arbee Drive.
