Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

Farm protest ends in ‘sweet’ talk >> Veralum farm workers attacked ANDILE SITHOLE

ENSIONS ran high between residents and sugar-cane farmers on Tea Estate in Verulam after a group of protesting residents attacked farm workers and threatened to evict the estate owners on Tuesday.

The protest started early in the morning at Tea Estate when residents barricaded roads with burning tyres and attacked farm workers and demanded that they leave.

The protesters had reportedly received information from a local chief that residents can take ownership of

the farm.

However, the chief of eMaqadini clan Mqoqi Ngcobo confirmed that he made no such statement regarding the farm ownership.

President of Natal Cane Growers Association, Yaga Govender told the Weekly: “There was a problem at Tea Estate farm with farmers and Inanda area residents. There was [an attempted] land invasion at the farm, which we believe was unlawful. We agreed with the farmers and residents to resolve the issues and the chief called a meeting to assist us by sending his tribal councillors to restore peace and order in the area.

Ward committee elections soon to be in full swing WEEKLY REPORTER

HE elections of ward committees in all wards in eThekwini Municipality takes place on 20 November.

The aim of these elections is to elect 10 members from the community to represent each ward and work with ward councillors and the municipality.

In terms of the Constitution, all municipalities must elect from its residents a ward committee to consult and advise the municipality - through the ward councillor - on the needs of the people within each ward.

Residents must have their green

bar coded SA identity document or the new Smart card - no passports and/or driver’s licences will be accepted as the requirements for participation aligns with the same requirements for a local government election and participants have to reflect on the voters roll.

The committees are expected to meet every month to collate portfolio specific information from across the ward that should in turn be presented, with recommendations, for debate at the monthly meeting under chairmanship of the ward councillor.

Only the resident elected in the ward committee elections would be

compensated with a stipend of R1 000 a month in lieu of out-of-pocket expenses, while the sub-committee would consist of volunteers.

In Tongaat and Verulam elections will be held in the La Mercy community hall, Magwaveni Word of Hope Crèche, Victoria Primary, Flambel Primary, Canelands library, Hammonds Farm, Waterloo Phase six crèche, Mount Moreland Gazebo, Umdloti clinic, La Mercy Christian Church and Westbrook Retirement Village. Registration starts from 8am at all voting stations.

portant communication link between residents, ward councillors and the municipality. Interested partied must be able to read,debate issues and be a resident of the specific ward.”

“I can say the meeting with the chief was fruitful and we hope the situation will return to normal after all concerned parties were addressed accordingly,” he said.

Chief Ngcobo denied allegations made about him saying that he never ordered tribal councillors to evict farmers in Verulam.

Speaking at the meeting he told farmers and some residents that there are people inciting violence in the community.

Ngcobo’s right­hand man Muntu Shangase (60), accused farmers for instigating violence in the area.

“None of this would have happened if farmers did not shoot the protesters.

Prior to the protest we warned farmers not to dump dangerous chemicals in residential areas, but they never listened. The community was angry and took to the streets.

“However, we are glad that our chief intervened and the matter was resolved,” he said.

A farmer, Willie Naicker (50), confirmed that the protesters want­ ed to take ownership of the farms.

“It came to our attention that there was a person inciting residents to turn against us by telling them that chief Ngcobo issued an instruction to residents to evict farmers.

“That was a blatant lie and the chief denied it at the meeting,” he said.

Police spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim said four farmer workers were injured.

“The farm workers were seriously injured when a group of protest­ ers stoned them.

“Police are investigating a case of public violence. No arrests have been made at this stage.”

Reaction Unit SA crime report Suspects open fire on reaction of­ ficer: Tongaat A TATA bakkie that was stolen from Durban was recovered on 8 November by members of Reaction Unit South Af­ rica (Rusa) in Tongaat.

While on patrol in the area officer Denis Kleynhans received information of a suspicious bakkie without registra­ tion plates in Verulam.

The officer patrolled the area and found the bakkie turning off the R102 into a dirt road leading to Verulam.

Kleynhans pursued the bakkie on the dirt road. Two suspects then aban­ doned the vehicle and fired several shots at the officer as they fled into the sugar cane field.

Kleynhans returned fire and pursued the suspects on foot, however no ar­ rests were made.

A registration check from the licence disk confirmed that the bakkie had been stolen from the Point area in Dur­ ban during the month of October this year.

The bakkie was handed over to au­ thorities for further investigation.

Electrical fault causes taxi colli­ sion: Verulam At approximately 5.45pm on 9 No­ vember members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to a home on Marula Circle in Trenance Park, Veru­ lam after receiving several calls from the public reporting a taxi crashing into a house.

Upon arrival a Toyota Hiace was found lodged in an embankment a few metres away from the home.

It was established while returning from Verulam the driver of the taxi no­ ticed smoke and sparks coming from the engine compartment.

He switched off the vehicle and at­ tempted to roll it to his employer’s house on Marula Circle.

After encountering an incline the driver decided to start the vehicle and drive it the rest of the way when the brakes failed and the steering locked re­ sulting in the vehicle crashing down a steep driveway and lodging itself in the embankment.

The 52­year­old driver and the con­ ductor suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical attention.

Teenagers injured after bakkie los­ es load: Verulam Two teenagers were injured after a bakkie carrying plastic plumbing pipes lost its load on Inanda Road in Verulam at approximately 5.30pm on 9 Novem­ ber.

Members of Reaction Unit South Af­ rica were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call from a passing motorist reporting the incident.

Upon arrival it was established that the 13­year­old boys were walking on In­ anda Road when several plumbing pipes fell off the back of a passing bak­ kie.

The boys suffered multiple cuts to their body from the jagged pieces of plastic from the pipes which shattered on impact.

The injured teenagers were trans­ ported privately to a medical facility.

Murder: Verulam At approximately 11pm on 12 No­ vember, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the south­bound lane of the R102 after re­ ceiving reports of an individual lying in the centre median.

Upon arrival the man was found to have sustained multiple stab wounds to his chest and back.

He showed no signs of life and was declared dead on scene.

The victim’s identity and the motive for the murder has not been established at this stage. ­ Supplied.

A

MAN facing multiple charges of rape will know his fate next year after the Verulam Magistrate’s Court adjourned his case until 12 January, 2017.

Bheki Magwaza (45), appeared in court on 15 November facing charges of

raping women and children in Verulam from 2012 to 2016.

On Monday residents gathered outside court and demanded that the accused not be released.

At his first court appearance in 16 September, Magwaza dropped a bombshell when he abandoned his bail application and told the magistrate he feared

residents will kill him if he is granted bail.

When Magwaza reappeared in court on 15 November the magistrate told him that the case will be adjourned for further investigations.

He will spend Christmas in custody awaiting his next appearance in court.

EVERY day in South Africa an average of 383 families will lose a loved one while an additional 127 people will suffer a perma­ nent disability. Unfortunately, these trage­ dies will leave many of the affected house­ holds financially destitute given that the majority of South African earners are under­ insured by 59%.

The 2016 Life and Disability Insurance Gap Study conducted on behalf of the Asso­ ciation for Savings and Investment South Africa (ASISA) by True South Actuaries and Consultants shows that the life and disabil­ ity insurance gap had widened to an over­ whelming R28.8 trillion by the end of 2015 from R24 trillion at the end of 2012.

The Study, conducted every three years, measures the difference between existing life and disability cover and the actual insur­ ance needs of South African earners.

Peter Dempsey, deputy CEO of ASISA,

says: “While many choose to believe that the unexpected could never happen to them or their families, the statistics prove otherwise. It is therefore vital that you pro­ tect the financial welfare of your loved ones through any of life’s ups and downs with ad­ equate risk cover.”

He notes that the insurance shortfall for the average income earner widened to more than R900 000 for life cover and over R1.1 million for disability cover.

“This means that in addition to the emo­ tional trauma they may be experiencing as a result of a death or disability, families would have to overcome this shortfall either by finding extra income or looking at ways to reduce expenses, such as selling a car, family home and sending children to more affordable schooling,” he warns.

He observes that while the Gap Study only considers the income needs of house­ holds following a tragedy, it is important to remember that where a breadwinner has suffered a disability, not only would their family suffer a loss of income, but also face

He also notes that many consumers do not invest in adequate financial protection in the belief that insurers do not pay claims, which is one reason why the insurance gap continues to widen.

Last year, life assurers paid out R45.5 bil­ lion in life and disability claims, a claims ra­ tio of 99 percent.

He also says that, where claims were not paid it was mostly because policyholders had not been honest when disclosing de­ tails about their health or lifestyles.

Young earners particularly at risk The 2016 Life and Disability Insurance Gap Study reveals that the insurance gap is substantially wider among earners below the age of 40 years as compared to their older counterparts.

Earners below the age of 30 years face an average insurance shortfall of R1.2 mil­ lion for life cover and R1.4 million for disabili­ ty, while earners between the age of 30 and 39 years face an even higher average short­

Laugh Machine comedy show D

URBAN comedy lovers will be treated to a bumper line-up of funny men and women when this month’s Laugh Machine Comedy Show takes place at the iZulu Theatre on 18 and 19 November.

Inyaninga residents commemorate indentured FORMER residents of Inyaninga Sugar Estate barracks commemorated the arrival of the indentured labourers at Inyaninga Memorial Garden on 7 November.

Every year in November the senior citizens meet at this iconic site to commemorate the ar-

rival of the indentured labourers and pray for their loved ones buried in the graves in Inyaninga.

WO new Tucsons – both with turbocharged diesel engines – have been added to Hyundai’s compact SUV range that became a top-seller in its market segment in South Africa since the local launch of this model earlier in 2016.

The addition of the turbodiesel engines has increased the derivatives in Hyundai’s Tucson range to seven, including the 5 petrol derivatives available since the launch in March.

Originally launched in 2005, the Hyundai Tucson caught the attention of South Africa SUV buyers and became a firm top-seller in the segment for several years when it was followed its successor, the ix35, in 2009.

“The overall total of 56 408 first generation Tucson and ix35 sales is proof of the popularity of Hyundai’s SUV, and since the launch of the new Tucson earlier in 2016 we have sold an average of more than 600 units per month. One of the turbodiesel derivatives – on the Executive specification level – is powered by a new 1,7-litre engine that conforms to Euro 6 regulations for clean emissions and delivers 85 kW maximum power at 4 000 r/min. and 280 Nm peak torque between 1 250 and 2 750 r/min.

Power is transferred to the front wheels via a sixspeed manual gearbox.

The other Tucson turbodiesel derivative is equipped with a full range of standard features at the Elite specification level and uses a 2-litre Euro 2 engine that delivers 131 kW maximum power at 4 000 r/min., and 400 Nm torque between 1750 and 2 750 r/min. A six-speed automatic transmission transfers power to the front wheels.

In between lies the Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Nu Elite, also with the 2-litre petrol engine and automatic 6-speed transmission, but with a high level of standard features. One step down in

terms of standard features is the Hyundai Tucson 1.6 TGDi Executive, also with the new turbocharged 1,6-litre petrol engine, but with a manual 6-speed gearbox. The Executive offers a level of comfort and standard features that fits in between the Premium and Elite offerings.

The launch price of the new Tucson 1.7 Executive Turbodiesel (manual gearbox) is R439 900, while the Tucson R2.0 Elite (with an automatic gearbox) sells for R519 900.

The two turbodiesel engines take their place next to the naturally aspirated 2-litre petrol engine and turbocharged 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine that was introduced with the Tucson in March in South Africa.

The new Tucson 1.7 Executive Turbodiesel is built in Hyundai’s modern factory in the Czech Republic.

The 1,7-litre turbodiesel is paired with a smooth six-speed manual gearbox which drives the car through the front wheels.

The 2-litre diesel engine, in the Elite derivative that is imported from South Korea, is also equipped with a turbocharger that enables it to deal particularly well with the oxygen-starved Highveld and other high-lying and mountainous areas in South Africa.

It delivers 131 kW at 4 000 r/min., and its torque delivery peaks at an impressive 400 Nm from 1 750 to 2 750 r/min. Its CO2 emissons was measured at 175 g/km. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox with a torque converter.

The new Tucson is built on a completely new platform that offers generous interior dimensions. There is an excellent exterior-to-interior dimension ratio, continuing the Hyundai tradition for highly efficient packaging.

Both derivatives are fitted with a sound system with a 3,8-inch display screen as standard equipment. A new seamless DAB+ digital radio with six audio speakers is standard across the Tucson range. Further connectivity is provided through USB and AUX connections for iPod in the centre console, or music can be streamed through a Bluetooth connection.

The introduction of new technologies means the All-New Tucson is one of the most comprehensively equipped vehicles in its segment when it comes to safety features. The Tucson has scored a full set of five stars in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) tests, with top ratings of 86% for adult occupant protection, and 85% for child occupant safety.

A number of passive safety features are included in the All-New Tucson. For occupants there are six airbags, including driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags throughout the range. Both derivatives have Isofix child seat anchors in the rear bench.

The new, stiffer structure for the 2016 Tucson has enabled Hyundai engineers to achieve significant gains in the suppression of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), making it one of the quietest and most refined cabins in the class. Increased sound-absorption at the base of the A-, B- and C-pillars protects occupants from road vibrations, while new high-density anti-noise pads are fitted within the central and rear floor pans to limit noise ingress.

At the front an underfloor cover is fitted beneath the engine bay, while at the rear a change to bush-mounting rather than solid-mounting for the rear subframe isolates the cabin from road surface irregularities transferred through the rear suspension.

Hyundai’s 5-year/150 000 km manufacturer’s warranty, enhanced by the additional new groundbreaking 7-years/200 000 km drivetrain warranty, comes standard with the all-new Hyundai Tucson package, as well as roadside assistance for 5 years or 150 000 km.

All derivatives come with a 5-year/90 000 km service plan, and service intervals are spaced at 15 000 km, except for the Tucson 1.7 UII Executive Diesel, which has 30 000 km service intervals. - Supplied.

HE Tongaat Panthers Athletics Club’s glamorous granny Gonum Moodley celebrated her 70th birthday with her Panthers family after completing the 12km route at the penultimate leg of the Thinnys League Challenge for 2016 at the weekend.

When asked what keeps her looking so good, she said: “Age is just a number. Exercise, a healthy diet and my Sunday morning walks with my club members keeps me ‘young’.”

Club members agree that Moodley is an inspiration to all young women in the community.

The club also salutes other members Loga Naidoo, Joy Rajkumar and Pushpa Pillay who are also in their 70s.

Their determination and commitment to sport is overwhelming.

The last and final leg of the Thinnys League Challenge for 2016 will take place on Sunday 20 November at 5.30am.

Also flying the Panthers flag high was athlete Patrick Ludongo who took part in the Soweto Marathon and completed in an excellent time of 3.28 recently.

Railways roar in KZNCU finals

THE Verulam Child and Family Welfare Society in partnership with Pick n Pay and Verulam Athletics Club hosted a successful fun run at the Verulam Sports ground recently.

CEO of Pick n Pay in Verulam Selva Nayager was the driving force behind the event and has been the anchor sponsor since its inception. All participants each received a goodie bag and a medal The Verulam Athletics Club provided the marshals and attended to the logistical arrangements of the race. Young Adults Helping Improve People (YAHIP) assisted by controlling the water station and clearing up after the event.

THE Railways Cricket Club made history when they became the first Tongaat based club to contest in the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) T20 final against Amanzimtoti Cricket Club at Sahara Stadium in Durban earlier this month.

However, as a result of persistent rain on the day, the finals was washed out without a ball being bowled.

In terms of KZNCU rules, the trophy was shared between both clubs and the Tongaat team was declared joint T20 champions for 2016.

THE 1st leg of the 2016/17 leg of the Asmals Hypersave Series took off in earnest as more than 40 participants enjoyed splendid running conditions.

Cool and overcast weather presented fabulous conditions for all as they eased over the 21km, 15km and 10km routes.

The series serves as a perfect springboard for athletes to launch their preparation for the forthcoming season, as they break into pre-season running by stepping up from 10km to 15km and beyond.

The resilient Ari Perumal led the 15km field in a credible time of 1:24 a minutes before Ashwin Bedesi.

MAIDSTONE Cricket Club’s U13 juniors clinched their first victory in their opening game of the 2016/2017 Tongaat Cricket Unions Junior League against former League Champions Belverdere Cricket Club with a decisive win by 40 runs last week.

Belvedere won the toss and elected to field. Maidstone’s opening batsmen Rylan Naidoo (3) and Pradi Patel (0) got out early in their innings.

Damien Naidoo (30) and Nikhil Nundhlal (5) who together steadied the innings with a solid partnership as Naidoo showed an excellent display of batting. Maidstone then lost quick wickets in the middle and lower order and posted a score of 95 all out.
