HE South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has blamed Matatiele Local Municipality for the death of a traffic officer - Don McKenzie - who was shot and killed on 28 October.

McKenzie’s funeral was held at the Full Gospel Ministries Church in Matatiele on Saturday.

Samwu members said McKenzie was not wearing a bullet-proof vest when he was killed, and that it’s been four years that workers have been asking the municipality for protective clothing.

“The safety of employees is not considered a priority in this municipality.

Workers work under difficult circumstances and don’t have protective clothing.

“In April we held a strike asking for protective uniforms, but the municipality suspended 52 workers for demanding this,” said a Samwu member, and municipal worker at the funeral.

Mxolisi Qina asked Municipality Mayor Momelezi Mbedla at the funeral not to oppress workers by not supplying them with protective clothing.

Mbedla didn’t respond directly to the statement, but said McKenzie’s funeral must not be used as a platform for workers to raise their concerns.

McKenzie worked at the Matatiele Local Municipality as a finance intern between 2005 and 2008 and in September 2008 he was appointed a logistic management clerk at the municipality.

At the funeral traffic officers covered McKenzie’s coffin with a white cloth, standing next to it in his honour.

T the public hearings of the Children’s Second Amendment Bill, hosted by the Social Development NCOP delegation in Kokstad, children’s rights were highlighted.

KZN National Council of Provinces (NCOP) members, led by chairperson Nahara Yatima, and a member from national Parliament, Lungelwa Zwane, attended.

Yatima said the purpose of the proposed Bill is to ensure that children are protected, especially adopted children.

“Children have a right to education and must be protected.”

Husband wanted for allegedly killing wife MALUTI police are searching for a man who allegedly murdered his 26year-old wife at Khoapa village in Maluti on 30 October.

The couple were apparently in their bedroom when the incident occurred.

“According to the man’s relatives, the woman was heard screaming for help. The door was locked, but relatives kicked the door open. The woman was found in a pool of blood, dead. The man immediately ran away,” said SAPS spokesperson Captain Raphael Motloung.

Police were called and found that the woman had sustained a stab wound to her neck.

According to police the woman and the man came from Lesotho.

“The motive behind this incident is not known at this stage. The man is still at large and anyone with information should contact Maluti police on 039 256 3800,” said Motloung.

So, in order to fight crime, communities have started subcommunity forums that will help in the fight against crime in the CBD, and rural areas.

“We want people to be safe when withdrawing money at ATMs. We are going strengthen our patrols next to ATMs and busy shops,” said Nohlaba.

He asked people not to take the law into their own hands by arresting and beating thugs.

However, forum members don’t have firearms or handcuffs, which SAPS members have.

“We use torches that have been supplied by police to patrol at night.

“We also use our cellphones to report crime to police. The time has arrived for us to fight crime,” said Nohlaba.

The initiative is supported by communities and the SAPS.

Kokstad cop ‘entertains’ criminals SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com INSTEAD of being harsh on criminals, seven-year Kokstad cop, Constable Thabo Disane (29), entertains criminals by joking with them to make them feel comfortable while in custody.

The officer deals with armed robbery, theft, rape and business robbery.

When Disane is not on duty he “turns his work firearm into a microphone” by emceeing at functions, and sometimes organises events.

“I am enjoying my work as an officer.

I work four days as a police officer and during my four days off I organise and attend events as an emcee. Last year I

was the emcee at the Matatiele Jazz Festival.

“I was also the emcee at a show hosted by musician, Zakes Bantwini in Harding. I have organised other big events where sometimes I deal with celebrities such as Cassper Nyovest, Naak Musiq, Ifani, Thokozani Langa and Naima Kay.” Disane is the father of a five-year-old girl and is looking forward to being a role model to young people in Kokstad.

“I arrest criminals with a smile and I make them smile by making jokes. I always ask criminals what drives them to commit crime and some criminals go to social workers for counselling through me talking to them.”

A VEHICLE travelling from Harding to Durban was stopped by Port Shepstone police members at night recently.

Police officers from the Port Shepstone K9 Unit, the Port Shepstone 10111 Call Centre Response Unit and Warrant Officer Stompie Sonnekus from Organised Crime Unit, were on duty on the N2 near the Marburg onramp.

“They stopped a vehicle, which was en-route from Harding to Durban and 27 bags of dagga were found in the vehicle,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“The two occupants were arrested and detained for dealing in drugs and will appear in court soon,” she added.

HE Ubuhlebezwe Municipality Speaker in Ixopo, Zwakele Mngonyama, was spotted by Fever hitch-hiking on the busy R56 last Thursday.

He is unlike other municipal speakers, who drive fancy cars costing millions, while communities complain about the lack of service delivery, Mngonyama is a daily hitch-hiker.

The speaker was carrying a heavy bag while holding up his thumb pointing in the direction of Durban.

The time was 5.16pm and it was raining and misty.

“I don’t have an option because I don’t have a car. I am rushing to the provincial ANCYL meeting in Pietermaritzburg,” said Mngonyama.

Mngonyama was elected speaker after the 3 August local government

elections. He is also the ANCYL regional chairperson in Harry Gwala.

“For a high-profile well-known municipal speaker and politician like Mr Mngonyama to be hitch-hiking is an embarrassment. I spotted him standing here about an hour ago and I feel sad for him,” said a hitch-hikers

He said sometimes he is embarrassed in his position as a respected and powerful municipal speaker.

“My home is 25kms from Ixopo where the municipality office base is, but I hitch-hike from my home to work and back every day.”

He said he has raised the issue of him hitch-hiking from municipal council, but they have not given him a car.

“Being a municipal speaker, who does not have an office and a personal assistant, is also an embarrassment. I share an office with municipal executive committee members, but in other municipalities, speakers are provided with cars, an office, PA and all necessary things needed by office of the speaker,” said Mngonyama.

He said when he discusses the situation with council they always promise to allocate him a municipality vehicle when adjusting the budget, which is approved by council.

The post became vacant after the former manager Zamokuhle Mkhize’s contract expired in February.

Opposition party EFF is concerned about the re-advertising of the post after it was advertised in the media in August.

Municipal by­elections in vacant wards MAYOR of Umuziwabantu Municipality in Harding, Dixie Nciki, is pleased about the political tolerance that was shown during by-elections on Wednesday.

Nciki visited seven schools that were used as voting stations in Ward 1.

The ward councillor position has been vacant after ANC candidate, Bongani Skhosana, was shot and killed while taking his children to school in July before local government elections.

Nciki said it was not easy for the municipality to communicate with people about the ward without a councillor.

“People were sending their service delivery concerns to me, but now they will be able to speak directly to their ward councillor.”

About 15 wards across the country hosted by-elections for the first time after the 3 August elections. In KwaZulu-Natal nine wards were contested and security was tight at voting stations.

HE Umzimkhulu Memorial Hall, a historical building in Umzimkhulu, is being renovated at a cost of R17 million, by the municipality to bring back old memories.

The building, the oldest in the town, was donated to the people of Umzimkhulu by the Strachan family many years ago in memory of Donald, James, Thomas Wallace and Kate Strachan.

A senior Umzimkhulu citizen, David Kheswa, welcomed the renovation of the Memorial Hall and called for other old buildings in the town to be renovated.

He said when the hall was donated to the people of Umzimkhulu, life changed.

“We used the hall to host community gatherings, workshops, church services and concerts.”

The previous contractor, who was hired to renovate the hall, spent R8 million, but was chased away for incompetence by the municipality.

According to the municipal manager, Zweli Skhosana, the hall will

“The previous contractor didn’t perform well and renovations were stopped in April and a new contractor was hired.

“The hall is now 53% complete.”

The old structure of the hall is not going to be changed, a coffee shop, government offices, and fitness centre and conference facilities will be added.

Other old buildings in Umzimkhulu is the Umzimkhulu Hotel and the magistrate’s court and Kheswa would also like them to be renovated in order to attract tourists.

EG Hospital on inoculation campaign EG and Usher Memorial Hospital staff are on a new campaign and are visiting clinics, community halls and pre-schools treating and inoculating children from birth to five years.

The programme started early this month and continues until 18 November.

Hospital spokesperson Andile Pani said during the campaign children will be inoculated against measles and polio.

“The hospital is looking at preventing children from getting polio and measles.

This programme will assist the Department of Health in the early detention of diseases and the reduction of child mortality.”

The programme started at Shayamoya, Bhongweni, and moved to preschools in town. Parents with children, stakeholders and non-governmental organisations are encouraged to assist the programme by bringing their children for vaccination.

Vitamin A supplementary drops, which assist in strengthening the immune system, are given to children between the age of 12 and 59 months. Mebendazole deworming tablets that prevent children from getting intestinal worm are given to children aged between 24 and 59 months.

Polio vaccine drops are given to children from birth to 59 months.

The occasion was attended by the former TLC Hospice CEO, Teresa Olivier and guests.

“Many people need Hospice when they are terminally ill. The need for the services that TLC Hospice provides is increasing drastically in Kokstad,” she said.

Olivier started the Hospice 10 years ago and thanked people, business people and stakeholders for their support.

The event was attended by business women from Kokstad, Matatiele and Mthatha.

Ukhozi FM motivational speaker Abongile Mangala was the programme director and hospel artist Thina Zungu performed.

Mzana thanked women for attending and said she will organise other events to bring fun to Kokstad.

THE KZN Film Commission and KZN Fashion Council launched a partnership to promote the fashion and film industry at Umzimkhulu on Saturday.

They will host events at KZN municipalities and encourage young people to enter the industry.

Xola Zulu, KZN Fashion Council marketing manager said designers, models and filmmakers in KZN will be sent to workshops about fashion and film.

“Between 2014 and 2015 11 young people graduated after receiving a bursary from the commission to do screen writing, directing and film making.

“This year we are planning to take another 11 young people from each district municipality for training.

“Since last year the KZN Film Commission has funded 79 projects that are producing films.”

The KZN Fashion Council

gives designers opportunities to showcase their creations at exhibitions and fashion platforms.

The Umzimkhulu Municipality Local Economic Development and Tourism Unit welcomed the partnership and encouraged young people to grab the opportunities, which will help Umzimkhulu to grow its economy.

N Umzimkhulu gospel artist, Sibongukwanda “Jumbo” Nyangiwe (25), is going places in the music industry after releasing his first album, Jumbo Siyaya, in February.

Born in James village outside Umzimkhulu, Jumbo began singing at age nine while at Vierkant Primary School in Umzimkhulu.

He also sang in his Faith Mission church choir.

In 2010 he completed Grade 12, but due to financial problems, couldn’t further his studies.

However, he is planning to study

Umzimkhulu gospel artist’s hopes further in the near future.

Between 2011 and 2014 he helped his older brother at an Umzimkhulu funeral parlour and in 2014 he was the backing artist for gospel singer Sigwili Zuma before meeting the award-winning SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards gospel singer, Dumi Mkokstad last year.

Mkokstad introduced Nyangiwe to his company in Durban, Top Class Production Company, who has under its umbrella gospel artists Hlengiwe

“He has a good voice and I am going to help him go far in music. I paid all his costs when he recorded his first album and I pray that God helps him,” said Mkokstad in an interview with Fever.

Nyangiwe’s album has been aired on TV shows and national and local radio stations.

He was welcomed by many supporters when he performed in Margate at the City to City Motivational Tour, hosted by Ukhozi FM. On track three of his album he sings with Mcinga and Mkokstad.

“I go to gym in my spare time and I want to set a good example to the young people of Umzimkhulu, Harding and Kokstad by spreading the word of God through music.

“Every cent I get goes to my mother Mantombi Tshani, who lives on an old-age grant.”

Nyangiwe hopes to receive an award in the Best Gospel Newcomer category at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards on 29 November.

OUTH Africa’s hottest musical acts, most extreme action sports’ stars and biking elite will be converging at the new South Coast Bike Fest (#SCBF2017) at Margate Beach from 27 to 30 April, 2017.

To cement Margate’s reputation as the country’s leading biking destination, the coastal town will be hosting a four-day festival with non-stop action taking place at various venues.

Visitors can expect incredible, highly-skilled performances as some of the country’s best skateboarding, BMX FMX and trials bike riders display choreographed manoeuvres sure to keep the crowds captivated throughout.

Getting the festive vibe started on Thursday, 27 April, 2017 will be some of the best bands to emerge from Cape Town.

These include electronic band, Die Heuwels Fantasties as well as alternative rock group, Fokofpolisiekar, and rapper, Jack Parow.

Other big names that will be featuring on the Carling Main Beach Stage throughout the event include Just Jinjer, PJ Powers, Matthew Mole, Freshlyground, Prime Circle, Rubber Duc, The Kickstands, Koos Kombuis, Tender Mavundla, Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, Brian Finch, Piet Botha Band and The Gus Brown Band.

At the Daily Village, visitors will have access to a variety beachfront bars, clubs and restaurants and a range of the country’s leading gourmet food trucks will be on-site where diners can enjoy delicious meals from seaside, open-air seating.

The Dezzi Festival of Speed, taking place at Dezzi South Coast Raceway on 29 April, 2017 will also give audiences the chance to witness some high-speed biking action by top level riders.

The weekend will end on a high note with the traditional Shelly Centre Mass Parade, which gives bikers one last opportunity to hit the road together before heading home. The 34km mass parade will take place on Sunday, 30 April with the route taking bikers from Shelly Beach Centre along Marine Drive towards the Port Shepstone CBD before heading back towards Margate and finishing at the Fishing Pier.

Justin Mackrory, CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism, said the tourism-boosting event benefited Margate as well as the visitors to the coastal gem.

“The extended biking community looks forward to the annual pilgrimage to Margate which is ideally located for such an event.

This gathering is considered a highlight on the biking calendar and we are really excited to be expanding this long-held tradition with the fantastic South Coast Bike Fest next year.

AFTER surviving two days of suicidal drivers on the animal feedlot, jokingly referred to as the N2 highway last week, I now welcome news from the SA National Roads Agency that the N2 to our Wild Coast road will be tolled in future.

Before I started my journey, I was also dead set against putting toll booths on this entry to the Eastern Cape, but now I say to anyone still thinking about this to drive yourself over what has for many years, been South Africa’s most dangerous road.

Then think what a few toll booths could do to keep off this otherwise well-maintained highway those kamikaze drivers whose main thrill in life it is to pass a long line of cars on a blind rise on a misty day, with only one parking light working.

So dangerous do they make the N2 around Mthatha that this road is on the top five list of places to avoid on the international website “Driving Experiences”.

About the only thing you don’t have to worry about on the N2 is the goats. Survival of the fittest means there are no goats left that don’t look twice before crossing a road.

The sheep, donkeys, cows, dogs and horses are not as clever.

In fact, the image of half a horse smeared across the N2 will haunt me for a long time, and now, also you, if only to convince you never to drive on the N2 after dark.

Physically challenged pupils will use the facility to play netball, tennis and basketball.

Sithole-Moloi said the school has established a name for itself in education, sport and cultural activities.

National Disability Rights Awareness Month is celebrated annually between 3 November and 3 December.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on 3 December.

Harding Special School was established in 1990 to educate children with disabilities.

Principal Jonathan Simpson said the school is in need of a sports facility.

“For the past 26 years the school has many success stories of pupils who excelled in sport. Pupils represented the school at provincial and national tournaments. The combo court will help our pupils and avoid them having to travel away to play sport because the court is on school premises.”

The school starts from Grade 1 and goes up to Grade 7, and has 168 pupils this year.

Umziwabantu Municipality Mayor Dixie Nciki welcomed the combo court and asked people to love and care for people living with disabilities.

PUPILS from Bergview Primary School did well at the KwaZulu-Natal Youth League meeting at King Edward High in Matatiele on 29 October.

Participating pupils includ-

ed Yonelwa Poswa, Shweshwe Mosala, Advent Rugoda, Inga Duba and Junaid Ahmed.

Yonelwa came second in the U11 turbo javelin U11 and Shweshwe came second in the

U9, 80m race.

The school thanks King Edward High for hosting the meeting.
