MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto­ ries.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

ORN in Otjiwarongo, Windhoek in Namibia, Teresa Olivier, the Chief Executive Officer of Sivile Skills Development Centre, is pleased with what she has done in Kokstad and has high hopes of seeing Kokstad shining both in skills and health.

She came to Kokstad in 1989 after completing her nursing diplo-

ma in Cape Town and nursed at EG and Usher Memorial Hospital.

Her husband is a Kokstad surgeon.

In 2006 she opened the Tender Loving Care (TLC) Hospice to give people hope, especially those living with cancer, HIV, Aids and TB. “The Hospice started with only six care workers looking after people at home, giving food to orphans and medication to patients,” said Olivier.

TLC received funds from an Irish group of people in Ireland.

In April she left Hospice after being awarded a certificate of honour and accepted a new challenge - that of being the new CEO at Sivile Skills Development Centre.

The mother of two sons and a daughter described Kokstad as “a loving town”.

ATATIELE police officer, Constable Nyameko Lungu is celebrating his achievement after being awarded a trophy and a certificate of commendation at the Eastern Cape Service Excellence Awards hosted by SAPS in East London last Friday.

Lungu came third out of 192 entries in the “Vispol Employee of the Year” category.

It was the first time he had received a provincial award since becoming an officer in 2006.

“Commitment and hard work helped me get this certificate of commendation as I ensure to protect people by arresting criminals,” said Lungu.

He is the commander of the crime prevention unit under the Mount Fletcher cluster.

He is also the sector manager of the farming community in Matatiele where he organises meetings that

helps in the fight against crime and working with farm owners.

Lieutenant-Colonel Maphelo Ngame, Matatiele station commander, describes Lungu as “a disciplined officer who is not afraid to show positive behaviour to officers”.

30-year-old suspect, who appeared for murdering Ward 1 candidate, Bongani Skhosana.

It is reported that the suspect is Skhosana’s cousin and known in Ward 1. He was recently arrested by

the Hawks, who are investigating political murders in KZN. “The suspect was arrested in Durban and Hawks are still investigating and hope to arrest more suspects related to Skhosana’s murder,” said Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.

ANC Deputy Chairperson of Ward 1 Zimele Mkhize has welcomed the arrest of the suspect.

“Members of the ruling party are going to attend the case to oppose bail and call for a harsh sentence,” said Mkhize.

The case was postponed to today, Friday 18 November for bail application.

Taxis are expected to transport ANC members from all branches of Umuziwabantu to oppose bail.

Suspect arrested for traffic officer’s murder A 40-YEAR-OLD suspect was arrested last Friday in connection with the murder of traffic officer, Don McKenzie, who was shot and killed in Matatiele on 28 October. The suspect was arrested by police in Kokstad and appeared in Matatiele Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The case was postponed for bail application next Monday.

Police are still investigating and hope to arrest other suspects, who are linked to the murder of McKenzie,” said SAPS spokesperson Captain Raphael Motloung.

On 4 November Fever reported that McKenzie was killed while on night patrol and was stationed opposite Matatiele Private Hospital in High Street.

His funeral was on 5 November at Full Gospel Ministries Church in Matatiele.

Motloung welcomed the arrest of the suspect and said it will bring relief to his wife, children and colleagues.

Stock­theft operation yields results

A JOINT operation by various police stations around Harry Gwala Cluster area was conducted aimed at decreasing livestock theft in the area.

The four-day operation began on 7 November until 11 November during which unit members conducted stopand-search operations, visible patrols, roadblocks and visited abattoirs, other places where meat is sold and pension pay-points.

During the operation members recovered 52 suspected stolen cattle, two goats and two horses.

One suspect was arrested for stock theft during the operation.

T a peaceful march in Umzimkhulu on Friday Cosatu members called for a forensic audit of the Umzimkhulu Municipality.

Apart from Cosatu, Nehawu, Samwu and hawkers from Gateway and municipal buildings at Umzimkhulu took part.

Gugulethu Mavuma, Umzimkhulu secretary of Cosatu, said the municipality must be investigated by the Department of Co-operate Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to root out corruption and nepotism.

“The march was held so that we could voice our anger and frustration about the conduct of the municipal

leadership that has not bothered to respond to our letters since 6 October.

“At the local government elections federation members spoke about fighting corruption.”

Grievances that were listed on a memorandum included a forensic audit regarding the renovation of Umzimkhulu Memorial Hall, the building

of a testing ground, the building of traffic department offices and the procurement of the municipal fleet.

Hawkers who were part of the march were concerned about legal trading permits, which the municipality is failing to release, resulting in them being harassed by municipality police for not having trading permits.

The memorandum also called for an investigation into allegations of the municipality selling trade permits and stealing funds.

FROM hitch-hiking to a steering wheel has finally become reality for Ubuhlebezwe Municipality Speaker Zwakele Mngonyama after Fever last week published a story about him having to hitch-hike when he had meetings to attend.

Mngonyama was spotted hitch-hiking by Fever reporter on a misty, rainy day on the busy R56 road on his way to a meeting in Pietermaritzburg.

He was inaugurated as speaker after the recent 3 August elections and was elected Harry Gwala regional chairperson of the ANCYL recently.

Mngonyama was the only speaker in all four local munici-

palities in Harry Gwala District who did not have a car.

After the article was published the ANCYL provincial leadership was touched when they read about the hitch-hiking speaker.

“I received a phone call from the provincial leadership of the youth league to come and get Ford Ranger Double Cab.

“I thought I was dreaming when I received the keys from youth league leadership, but it was reality.”

Mngonyama was told he could use the car temporally until Ubuhlebezwe Municipality bought him a new car.

Mngonyama thanked Fever and provincial ANCYL leadership for changing his life.

On Monday the municipality spokesperson Willie Mgcina was asked to respond to the allegations, and yesterday responded.

“The municipality is not holding any permit for hawkers though they were requested to come and renew their permits. The hawkers were given space to present their case to the municipality eventually agreed to process their grievances with the time frame of end October. Therefore they wanted to do the follow up and the meeting was already arranged though the hawkers could not understand.

“The municipality has not yet responded to the grievances of Cosatu and we are still waiting for Cogta to come to us for the responses,” said Willie Mgcina . in the Fever I would still be struggling to attend municipal meetings.”

Mngonyama has no personal assistant and an office as required by the office of the speaker.

ANCYL president Collen Maine called on municipalities to take care of their own employees and provide all the things a speaker requires.

Ubuhlebezwe Municipality mayor Zamo Nxumalo’s phone went unanswered when Fever tried to contact him for comment.

Marketing workshop held UGU South Coast Tourism hosted a work­ shop for communities and Small, Medi­ um, Micro and Enterprise members in Harding recently.

The workshop was aimed at empower­

ing people and address the skills shortage in undeveloped areas.

Ugu South Coast Tourism develop­ ment officer, Maxwell Mhlongo said the workshop was fruitful.

“Participants were between the age of 18 and 55 and came from diverse indus­ tries such as hospitality, beauty, farming, catering and carpentry. Next year we hope to network with stakeholders to encour­ age accredited trainers and businesses to get involved in empowerment of commu­ nities and SMMEs.” At the workshop SMMEs and business people were told to look at their markets and conduct market research. ­ Supplied.

New water­saving campaign started UNDER a recently launched campaign ­ Operation Valithonsi ­ the Harry Gwala District Municipality is calling on people to save water by fixing leaking taps.

“The district is experiencing high vol­ umes of water loss through leaks, and ap­

proximately 44 water leaks have been fixed in the district,” said Harry Gwala Dis­ trict Mayor, Mluleki Ndobe.

N 2009 the Mount Currie Disabled Women’s Organisation, an NPO in Kokstad, was established to address challenges faced by people living with disability.

The group is using the Khanyiselani Development Trust offices to host networking sessions and make clothes and other items to sell.

Group chairperson, Nontsikelelo Phakane, also the provincial treasurer of Disabled People South Africa (DPSA), said the group assists many disabled people in Kokstad.

“At our sessions we invite social workers to counsel us. We meet every Monday and Friday.”

From 3 November to 3 December is National Disability Rights Awareness Month. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is on 3 December.

there is no “special school” for them in Kokstad.

“We depend on Vulekani Special School in Umzimkhulu to get education, and other schools are far away from Kokstad. The government needs to have a seven percent employment rate for disabled people.

Children’s home receives groceries SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com HOME of Comfort in Kokstad received a generous donation of groceries, valued at R3 500, from a group of women, who call themselves “Ikhonco” last Thursday.

The women are congregants from five Kokstad churches - Anglican Church, Methodist Church of South

Africa, United Church, Baptist Church and United Reformed Church.

Ikhonco treasurer, Nomalizo Ntsombothi, said the group was started by women in 1976.

“We used to buy presents for each other and help underprivileged homes and families by donating food.

Christian advises leaders SOUTH Africans have to thank God for blessing this country with peaceful elec­ tions, compared to other countries where elections often result in war and the death of innocent people.

This shows that South African citi­ zens have acknowledged the term “de­ mocracy”, but this means nothing if newly elected leaders don’t enter into a relationship with God. I noted that people have lost interest in voting because of corruption. I believe that leaders are sent by God to serve people and the Bible says: “Now I am sending you to the king of Egypt so that you can lead my people out of his coun­ try.”

So newly elected leaders must ask themselves, “do I understand my mis­ sion? Do I believe that people have been made in the image and likeness of God?” If the answer is “yes”, as voters we all smile, but if the answer is “no” this is bad news. In order to see South Africa as a successful country among others we

need leaders who are clear about their mission.

Let’s agree that today South Africa is restructuring development, but it’s a pity we are facing other issues that need dedicated leaders in order to root out those things.

Corruption is one of those things, be­ cause it is a sin that contributes to pov­ erty and I believe our country needs leaders who begin their mission as the servants of God. Recently our country corner­to­cor­ ner faced protests that resulted in dam­ age to government property. I don’t con­ done the act of damaging property, but I challenge today’s leaders about Batho Pele principles so people can enjoy the fruits of democracy.

I challenge Christian political leaders to oppose things that contribute to de­ mote God’s image. Unfortunately, it is fearful to see Christians act like chame­ leons ­ if it is in a green colour it becomes green, in a red colour it becomes red.

HE Matatiele Multi-Sectoral Secondary Co-operative Limited has encouraged people to plant trees to promote home food security and poverty alleviation at an event in Matatiele recently.

The event was attended by Matatiele Local Municipality staff, Economic Development and Planning, Rural Development and Agrarian Reform members, councillors and the community.

Avuye Mlandu, Matatiele Multi-Sectoral Secondary Co-operative secretary, said the event was aimed at promoting agriculture to primary co-operatives.

“People must use their small available land to produce crops to fight poverty. We don’t encourage people to buy spinach or cabbage in shops, they should grow them in their garden.

“Through co-operatives people can create jobs by producing crops and selling to local shops or supermarkets.”

A partnership was signed between Matatiele Municipality and Matatiele Multi-Sectoral Secondary Co-operative to develop agriculture the area.

Mlandu thanked businesses and the municipality for supporting their co-operatives after the initiative was launched in Matatiele in June 2015.

OCAL athletic, Richard Ingram is returning home safely with a silver medal he won at the 2016 World Master Athletics Championships in Perth, Australia.

The games started on 26 October and ran until 6 November.

He earned his medal for completing the M35 400m hurdles in a time of 56:32.

A total of 56 South Africans also participated and brought home nine bronze, 17 silver and 19 gold medals. Some of the participating countries included Britain and the U.S. “I am happy to return home with a medal and I want to thank Peak Physique Gym Kokstad for letting me make use of their facilities for the whole year while I was preparing for this journey,” said Ingram.
