‘Ramping’ her way to the top >> She has entered and won a number of ramp competitions

T

HE female face of the Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) campaign, Twinky Trisha Dimba (19), now “walks tall” on the catwalk and has come a long way since being bullied at school because of her height.

Twinky was born in Durban and lives in F Section, Ntuzuma township.

The young woman has benefited from her success at the DFF and her participation in the model boot camp.

“I have learnt self-discipline, confidence and to never give up. I have learnt to push myself to another level, to be more of a perfectionist. I have also learnt to be more health conscious and ensure that I have a healthy body.”

Although humble and God-fearing this young woman, who writes poetry, studies part-time and participates in a youth programme in Ntuzuma, has been exposed to many opportunities and has drawn the attention of the media.

Signed by Durban modelling agency, Ice Model Management, she has entered and won a number of ramp competitions and wears designers David Tlale, Thula Sindi, Siya Meyiwa and more.

When asked whether she prefers ramp or photographic modelling, Twinky admits she can’t choose between the two.

“When it comes to a photographic shoot, I get to be someone else, to express myself through

my body and be as amazing as God has created me to be. When it comes to the ramp, it is about being powerful and strong. I get to be the show stopper and the centre of attention.

“I also get to show the best garments while being every shade and colour that God has created me to be,” she says.

His book, inspired by God >> ‘The African Code’ speaks about the ideas initiated by Biko

IS passion for writing saw the launch of his book, The African Code.

Xolo Songca (24) was born in a small town - Libode - on the outskirts of Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

He was raised by parents who valued respect.

“I have two younger brothers, Mandla and Sanele. We are raised by parents, who value respect to the point that we cannot address adults without saying, ‘yes ma or yes sir’, so that played a big role in shaping me and where I am in life right now.

“We were taught the importance of respect and humility from a young age.

I also have a son, who is very dear to me - he has his own chapter in the book. He goes by the name of Loyiso Lwazilwenkosi.

“He's played such an integral role in motivating me to make him proud of the fact that I'm his dad. My late grandfather wrote a history book in the seventies, which I never got to read because it was banned as it contained black political content. So I also wanted to make him proud of me where he is.

“My childhood memories were pretty awesome. I grew with my grandmother from my mother's side with a few of my cousins. I remember how on Christmas Day we were so excited to light fireworks and eat a lot of food.

“We used to make cars out of wire, swim in the river although that was strictly forbidden. But my childhood was very adventurous. I was very much an outdoor kind of child. I was quite impulsive as well, and very sensitive when I lost at a Pokemon or spinning top game because I did not like losing.

“I guess that evolved very much into

my current character as well. I just don't like coming out second best.”

Xolo studied at the Durban University of Technology, where he did marketing, but later realised it wasn't what he wanted to do so he had to drop it.

“I then went into pharmaceutical marketing and that gave me the opportunity to liaise with people and understand the Department of Health in thorough perspective.

“I recognised its shortcomings and its achievements and I was very willing to form an integral role in patient care and patients’ rights.

“The political aspect of my character arises quite effortlessly when I deal with people and make their lives better.”

The African Code speaks about the ideas initiated by Steve Biko.

“I started writing the book in December 2014 and I completed it in January.

It was a long process because I wanted to give myself enough time and speak facts so that required a lot of reading and watching correspondent books and documentaries.

“The idea of black consciousness in my book, I tend to modify black consciousness to modern times. What does being black and being proud of it mean to the youth and black people of today?

“I touch on topics that emasculate the pride in our history, mostly our unknown history. I try to empower young people to study more of their black history and I believe it is only by us educating ourselves in this manner that we may have the pride and self-love we require in order to tackle larger issues.

“I also offer tactics that we need to form our own black economy, our own inventions and innovations. I stress that the only way we can achieve world peace without racial barriers is by first em-

powering the previously disadvantaged races such as the black race in a sense that they are as much equal to any form of progress as other races of the human family.

“This is the only way we can talk world peace, is if we right the wrongs first. But in a nutshell I do believe my book contains a powerful message, and I do think that it is a book that everyone should have.”

When asked what inspired him to write the book he said: “Honestly, I've always being very vocal about black consciousness and so I imagined that doing it in book form would in itself be a powerful tool in the mission towards promoting a reading generation.

“But mostly, it's God that inspired me to write it. I believe I'm sent for something, and so I'm only performing what I'm sent to do, and this is only the beginning.

He advised the youth: “We are the generation that will lead our country toward greater thoroughfares. No dream is too big to accomplish, and no door is locked tightly enough not to kick open.

“It's time we as young people rise up and take our rightful seats in the pinnacle of African brilliance.

It's time we become more politically aware.

Great leaders of the past have paved the way for us, and it's time we make them proud, and truly, impossible is nothing.”

Cycling indaba this weekend

Assisted death ­ right or wrong? >> Tutu’s assisted death issue has caused a stir NOSIPHO MKHIZE

RCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu recently celebrated his 85th birthday in Cape Town, however he looked ill and announced he was ready to die.

According to News24 Tutu was quoted saying “Today, I myself, am even closer to the departures hall than arrivals, so to speak, and my thoughts turn to how I would like to be treated when the time comes.

“For those suffering unbearably and coming to the end of their lives, merely knowing that an assisted death is open to them can provide immeasurable comfort.”

Tutu’s assisted death issue has caused a stir nationwide - some believe it’s his choice to do whatever he wants with his life while others say it is wrong. eThekwini Echo interviewed people to find out their views about assisted death.

Durban resident Nomkhosi Mbuyazi: “We all don’t know what he is going through therefore I think it is his choice whether to be assisted with his death or not. But honestly I would not do it.”

Xolile Sokhulu from Durban said: “He should think twice before doing it.”

Andile Khumalo from Pinetown: “I’m a traditional man so our culture does not allow such things. I believe that a person should wait for his time and it has to happen naturally. I believe that if a person dies he or she will be united with the ancestors and if one chooses to be assisted with their death then you will be a lost soul and won’t get a chance to be with your ancestors.”

Nosihle Ndlovu from Pinetown: “I wouldn’t do it, but at the same time the old man is suffering and he cannot bare the pain of being sick, so it’s his choice, we can’t judge him.”

Zola Madlala from KwaNdengezi: “I am a Christian and I believe that a person should wait for his time and Archbishop Tutu should know better as a religious leader. He is misleading people with this issue and I don’t think our law allows it. It’s like he is contradicting the Bible. We know he is suffering, but he is making all the wrong decisions. His family should support him until his day comes and make him realise that as much as he is sick, they still need him.”

Conjoined twins to receive high care

ZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has full confidence that the newly born conjoined twins from Zululand will receive the highest level of healthcare at Inkosi Albert Central Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH), where they are being treated.

The twin girls, who are conjoined at the chest and abdomen, were born at their home in Pongola on Saturday 8 October.

Their 31-year-old mother said she only attended ante-natal classes once, early in her pregnancy.

Dhlomo visited the girls in the neo-

natal intensive care unit of IALCH and spoke to the mother and chief pediatrician, Dr Harshavadan Ratilal Mackanjee.

Dhlomo said: “Whatever the outcome these twins are going to have will be God’s will. Here at IALCH, they are going to be exposed to a multidisciplinary team of highly trained specialists, including neonatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, cardiologists, gastroenterologists. This hospital is the best place because all of these specialists can be found under one roof.”

Dhlomo had been briefed by Dr

Mackanjee that each twin was comfortable and breathing on their own and currently being fed intravenously.

He was also told that although there are certain vital organs the babies share - the liver - there are other critical organs - heart and lungs - they do not share, which makes their case a little less complicated. “The doctors have indicated that they’ll allow the babies to grow to a certain age - about six months - which, according to their knowledge, will allow for a particular surgical intervention, if needed.” said Dhlomo.

“They’re not going to make any deci-

sion, good as they may be, without involving the family. The family component, culturally, will be much of the planning.”

Dhlomo said if the hospital care was to be done privately, it would cost millions. This, he said, is why the National Health Insurance is so crucial.

“The costs involved in the hospital care and other future plans would have amounted to what we call ‘catastrophic health expenditure’, which is exactly what NHI will deal with, as our national health minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has been saying.

“The family would have barely managed, but now these babies are going to have an outcome that is not dependent on how much money their parents have.”

He also hailed the Air Wing of the department’s emergency medical services for airlifting the twins from Itshelejuba Hospital to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.

Dhlomo wished the mother and her twins well and asked pregnant mothers to start ante-natal care as early as possible, in order for any abnormalities to be detected early. - Supplied.

HESE days weaves are very popular, not only in black communities, but in other races as well.

South Africans are slowly adapting to American trends from clothes to skin lighting and now weaves and wigs.

Echo reporters took to the streets to find out if women prefer weaves of their natural hair.

Nombuso Dubazane said she prefers natural.

“First of all I cannot afford these socalled weaves. I am unemployed and they cost a lot of money. Therefore I relax my hair with a cream relaxer and do braids with my natural hair - it only costs about R150.”

However Nomusa Dlamini, who had a weave that looked like her hair.

“I wear Brazilian hair, which costs over R2 000. I cannot go a day without the weave because I feel that men are more attracted to girls with long, straight hair.

“I like weaves because it makes me more beautiful. I don’t buy cheap weaves because they look artificial and they doesn’t have volume. I wear an 18-inch weave, but it costs a lot of money, but it’s worth it.

“So girls must stop hating girls who wear weaves. If they can’t afford a weave then they must shut up and go with their natural hair.”

Mrs Naicker from Durban, who bought a wig from Pononozy Hair Salon at Hillcrest Corner said she sometimes wear a wig because it is affordable and a low- maintenance hairdo.

“I wear a wig when I need change.

It beats going to the salon and sitting there for hours only to be disappointed with the end result. I also feel that other races should move away from stereotype that wigs are for black people.

Wigs can make anyone feel beautiful.”

Michelle Naidu a hairdresser who regularly recommends wigs to her clients said: “I think wigs are an easy way to change ones look without having to cut or damage hair.

“I often hire or sell wigs to clients, as some have very thin hair and cannot style it. Wigs are the in thing now and people should embrace this change.”

Dream comes true for young cancer sufferer IT was a special day in the lives of the Netcare 911 paramedics in KZN when they received a call to assist a sevenyear-old-boy to fulfill his dream on visiting uShaka Marine World.

Mohamed is terminally ill with cancer and the cancer Reach for a Dream with the help of sponsors brought him and his parents down to Durban to see the dolphins but tragedy struck.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha on their arrival in Durban Mohamed's condition got so bad he had to be admitted to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital. His father approached the hospital manager Mark Van Heerden and asked for help to fulfill his sons dream.

“TEARS RAN FROM THE FACES OF THE MOST HARDENED PARAMEDICS.” Umhlanga Hospital and uShaka Marine World took place and arrangements were made to take the little boy in an ambulance under the constant care of an Advanced Life Support paramedic to interact with the dolphins.

“This was a very emotional event as stands full of people witnessed the boy being carried by medics to the side of the pool. With the song playing there is one moment in time the handler slowly

brought the massive dolphin towards the child. Tears ran from the faces of the most hardened paramedics.

“The boy was able to touch and feed the dolphin, and the expression on his face will be burnt into the hearts of all who witnessed this awesome event."

After the event paramedics drove the child back to the hospital where he rested for an hour.

“We then drove the family to King Shaka International where the Netcare jet landed with a crew of paramedics.

The boy was stabilised for the flight and after he was strapped into a special stretcher they boarded the aircraft and flew to Port Elizabeth where he was admitted to a hospital near his home.

EE: Where are you from and where did you go to school?

HM: I was born in Durban but grewp up in Port Shepstone and completed my diploma in cost and management accounting at Mangosuthu Technikon. I also worked for Transkei Yamaha, Ntinga OR Tambo Development Agency, Kei Fresh Produce Market and Trade City.

HM: Tell more people to know about eThekwini Echo. Firstly, concentrate on good distribution in order for it to increase sales. Concentrate on the youth and customers, who are the target market for shop owners. The paper must sell itself in order for people to read it. It must target different groups or have different information and not focus on just one group.

EE: How long have you been in the sales industry?

EE: How does one become a good, successful sales rep?

HM: More than five years.

HM: You must be confident, know your product from A to Z. You must now what you are selling, in other words, what your product stands for and you must be able to answer all the questions relating to the product. You must also arrange personal meetings with clients because it makes it easier for them to trust you with their hardearned money. You must also lead the client, keep your promises, for example, be on time for an arranged meeting and give the client information that will turn their business into success.

EE: In the future, what would you like to see in eThekwini Echo?

HM: Growth both for me and the newspaper.

EE: What do you love about this city?

HM: Lots of development means the creation of jobs for the youth and that means opportunities for growth are in this city

New music centre for DHS >> DHS Foundation was established to generate financial support for the 150­year­old school, the oldest in Durban DURBAN High School (DHS) has continued a “heritage of excellence” for 150 years, being Durban’s oldest school. The school has positioned itself to lead boys on their journey to become men and take their place in the world.

In 2007 DHS Old Boy Chris Seabrooke, funded the building of Seabrooke’s Theatre, which has become a popular venue for many local productions in the city.

Once again Seabrooke has demonstrated his dedicated support both for the boys and the ethos of the school by self-funding the new stateof-the-art Chris Seabrooke Music Centre, which was due to open last week.

Despite a busy business career in which he has been on the boards of 25 JSE-listed companies, Seabrooke has always been engaged with the arts and with music in particular.

He co-produced over 20 stage musicals mostly

with Joan Brickhill and Louis Burke, including Meet Me In St Louis on Broadway for which he received a Tony Award Nomination.

He was also chairman of the State Theatre of South Africa, deputy chairman of the inaugural Board Of the National Arts Council and deputy chairman of the founding Board of Business & Arts South Africa.

After a series of interviews, one of KwaZuluNatal’s favourite songbirds - singer and songwriter Natalie Rungan, who has her Masters degree in music, and four albums under belt, was appointed director of the music centre, much to the delight of all.

When asked about her recent appointment as director, she said: “Music education has been sorely neglected in South African public schools for many years.

“It is very encouraging as an active performing artist to see such amazing support for the future of music education in schools by this world class music facility.

“I am motivated and challenged to take on the task of inspiring young minds and developing future musicians in our country.”

The new Chris Seabrooke Music Centre will boast soundproof practice rooms, an auditorium that houses a Yamaha baby grand piano, as well as a project-recording studio. This facility will be a platform for young musicians to grow their talent, with endless possibilities.
