Municipal workers on strike
to come UMVOTI Municipality workers who went on strike on Monday and Tuesday. They stated that the municipality employs over 100 temporary workers, 17 of whom have been "temps", but

Cancer Awareness Day GREYTOWN will be holding its fifth annual Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday 12 November - and this year's event is in honour of Michelle Redinger, who died on 6 October, a week after her 42nd birthday, and after an incredibly brave battle against the disease. Michelle's positive attitude, her sense of humour despite constant pain and her care for others served as an inspiration to the many, young and old, whose lives she touched. The event, organised by Greytown's Superbody Club will be held in Greytown Feeding Project Hall, Voortrekker Street. Organiser, Zeena Ally told the Greytown Gazette that theme for the day is "Get your Pink On". Pink has become the colour associated internationally with breast cancer. During the morning a Shavathon will take place - this is a fundraiser for CANSA in which donors can either have their head shaved or "spray painted" in a range of colours (which do wash out). To put the message across about the importance of regular checkups there will be talks to create this awareness and advice from cancer

Public comment needed on draft bylaws THE Umvoti Municipality draft by-laws, which if approved and implemented, will certainly bring about dramatic changes to the streets of Greytown. For instance - just two of the proposals - parking meters, no repairing vehicles on a street or pavement, and then there is this one, which seems a bit strange in these times of drought - no driving in a manner that will splash pedestrians, and a R1 000 penalty for doing so. Penalties for these and many others range from R500 to R2 000. In last week’s Greytown Gazette the municipality published
an advertisement requesting comment from the public on the proposed by-laws – deadline for such is 11 November. Copies of the proposed by-laws can be viewed at the Municipal offices, Greytown and Kranskop libraries and a copy can be emailed on request to ashwin.maharaj@umvoti.gov.za Included in the parking meter by-laws are detailed instructions which appear somewhat confusing and long winded :9.4(a) states that if a parking bay is parallel to the curb or sidewalk in such a manner that the motor vehicle is headed in the general direction of the

movement of traffic on the side of the road on which the vehicle is parked and so that the lefthand wheels are substantially parallel to and within 450mm of the left hand curb. Maybe someone can make sense of this - your best bet is to carry a tape measure in the vehicle - otherwise it could be a R500 penalty. Drivers who constantly U-turn in Pine Street, motorists are prohibited from driving “while holding a cellular or mobile telephone or any other com-
munication device in one or both hands or with any other part of the body (?), cyclists who ride on a sidewalk, or on any street without his feet on the pedals, and one hand on the handlebar at all times and even failure to leave a bicycle in an upright position can all lead to a fine. It is most important that Greytonians have a look and comment on the various draft by-laws, complaining once they have been implemented will not be of any assistance to anyone.
