Accident waiting to happen The unsafe ‘safety’ barrier in Durban Street, which has been in this state for quite a few years.
Water update
MANY months ago a driver, coming around the corner into Durban Street, hit and destroyed the road safety barrier - this is a notorious corner where, over the years, a number of vehicles have left the road and crashed into the barrier and fence. Part two of the story - the second photograph is of the pavement running along the broken barrier. As a result of crashes over the years, there has been an overspills of water from the water plant, storm damage
The totaly unsafe pavement on which pedestrians have to make their way.
(in the good old days) and general wear and tear as hundreds of pedestrians make their way cautiously along this so-called pavement. It is obviously totally unsafe to walk on the road - the history of accidents there bears this out, but it is also not that much safer to have to walk on the crumbling sur-
face of what is supposed to be the pavement. Over the years complaints have been lodged with the municipality and the province, but as can be seen here no action has been taken. Hopefully this major safety risk will be sorted out before this appalling situation leads to a serious accident.
Where is Umvoti TVET College? THERE was considerable excitement in Umvoti when in 2013 it was announced by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, and top government officials, that a TVET (FET) College was to be established in Umvoti. On 13 July, 2013 the Greytown Gazette ran a front-page story headlined “Muden to get FET college”, which would be opened in time for the 2013 matrics to study there. Zimbambeleni Community Development organisation, which had appealed for such a college in view of the high rate of unemployment and lack of tertiary education or training in the area, actually met with top government officials and were informed that the minister had decided that the college be established under the auspices of uMungundlovlu FET College to accommodate the 2013 matrics. Three Setas, construction, agricultural and IT, would be set up to cater for the youth, unemployed and nonmatrics, -some university course would also be offered and local farmers and Cedara College indicated they would be willing to monitor and assist with training. But it has been more than three years since these public announcements were made, but nothing has materialised to date, other than the Muden Skills Centre, which was set up following protest action back then. Muden was granted a skills centre, on condition that a fully-fledged FET (TVET) College would be located in Greytown to serve the entire Umvoti Municipality. Currently Muden Skills Centre (see page 3) is in a process of negotiating with Umvoti
Municipality regarding workplace experience for its pupils for incorporation into the municipality’s developmental plans, especially with regards to community house building in rural areas, and of course, the construction of shopping malls, and Thusong centres in Umvoti. FET (TVET) Colleges and skills development centres, such as Muden Skills Centre,
actually do provide free education, and to some extent, monthly stipends to students. Zimbambeleni is appealing to Umvoti Mayor Thami Ngubane to take action to promote a FET College especially for artisanal skills such as bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry, motor mechanics, electrical engineering etc., the scarce skills, which are key to the functioning of any municipality.

ALTHOUGH there has been much thundering over the past two weeks the actual rainfall in Greytown itself has been just over 61mm. Surrounding areas, however, benefitted far more. Unfortunately, hail made its presence felt causing considerable destruction to crops and houses in Muden, Craigieburn and Msinga. Lake Merthley is is now 19.59% full. The mystery of the Craigieburn pipeline remains just that – no response from Umzinyathi District Municpality as to when and even if, it will be completed.
