MGUNGUNDLOVU South Cluster police members have issued a stern warning for criminals to stay at home this festive season as they will be out in full force patrolling crime hot spots.

They will be prioritising crimes such as murder, house and business robberies, rape and crimes against women, children and the elderly.

During a vehicle motorcade around the city last Thursday to launch the festive season fight against crime campaign, Umgungundlovu South Cluster Commander Major General Phumelele Makoba, the police and other role players pledged their commitment to make Pietermaritzburg safe over the festive season.

The convoy, conducted by members from 11 police stations under Umgungundlovu South Cluster in an attempt to educate the public about safeguarding their cash and lives this festive season, started at Alexandra police station then proceeded to Richmond, Taylors Halt, Plessislaer and was rounded off in the city centre.

Addressing scores of people outside the Bessie Head Library, Makoba said they were calling upon all residents to partner with the police in fighting the scourge of crime.

“During the festive season crime levels tend to go up owing to the high levels of spending among consumers and an increased consumption of alcohol. This festive season, criminals will feel uncomfortable and unwanted as police will go out in full force to ensure a safe, secure and happy season for all residents.”

Makoba said residents could expect high police visibility over the festive season.

“There will be a zero tolerance

policy to crime this festive season.

We will increase police visibility in all the crime hot spots because we believe having police in plain sight prevents crime.”

Although law enforcement agencies will do everything in their power to ensure a safe festive season, Makoba has urged people not to expose themselves to crime.

“Do not be victims of crime, be careful when drawing money at ATMs, and avoid carrying cash because criminals are out there looking for you.

“One of our main concerns is also stokvels being soft targets to criminals. We urge members to be vigilant and try and carry as little cash as possible. They must use safer alternatives offered by banks when dividing the stokvel money.

“There are many scams happening around the city and you all need to be careful,”she said.

Makoba also urged residents to work together with the police and report any criminal activity.

“You know who the criminals are in your respective communities, do not harbour them. We also urge you not to buy stolen goods because buying encourages criminals to continue stealing because there is a market for the goods.”

A resident, who spoke to the Maritzburg Echo, said they are desperate for crime prevention in order to feel safe with the holidays approaching.

“Using ATMs in town is not safe anymore, you never know if the person behind you is a criminal.

This is going to get worse with people due to get bonuses.

“If the campaign brings more police into town then we are happy,” said the resident, who asked to remain anonymous.

Sibiya said one of the measures that can be implemented collectively by communities in ensuring safety and security during the festive season is creating a WhatsApp group to send out alerts of any suspected criminal activities.

“Most people have cellphones and WhatsApp can be used as a tool of communication to be aware of what is happening in your neighbourhood. Create a group and invite your neighbours, communication prevents crime before it happens.”

He said with the festive season rush people tend to neglect their home and personal security.

“As a personal security measure, when visiting a place try and understand your surroundings. Self-protect against any form of crime especially when you are out. As a basic rule,

ITH the expected festive season crime spike, a local security company - Community Watch Policing (CWP) - has cautioned people not to neglect their safety as they approach this time of the year.

Speaking to the Maritzburg Echo, CWP Founder Siyabonga Sibiya said people must realise that safety at home and elsewhere is their personal responsibility.

“A lot of people have the view that installing security measures like an alarm system or CCTV camera is only done in suburban areas and not townships. People need to understand that

someone must know where you are going and with whom. When you get to your destination report and make your location known. This will help to trace your whereabouts should something happen.”

He also cautioned people to use social media wisely and stop checking in everywhere.

“Criminals are also technology savvy these days, they can log onto Facebook or whatever social media and track your whereabouts. There is also a trend of people posting pictures of money on Facebook that is a risk and it must stop.”

With most stokvel groups also set to distribute their savings in December for festive spending, Sibiya said they receive numerous reports of stolen money around this time of the year.

“Stokvels must avoid handling hard cash, if they really must at least they must make use of the services of a private security company or request members of the police for assistance to avoid being soft targets for criminals.”

rious concern for the Tala Collection Private Game Reserve, farmers, land owners, conservancies and wildlife sanctuaries, who are fighting against organised illegal hunting.

Using the cover of darkness as their camouflage, poachers gain access to farm properties, and use highly trained dogs to chase wild animals to the property boundaries where they are shot by handlers lying in wait.

According to Tala Game Reserve, poachers mainly target small to medium antelope, including nyala, kudu and even warthog, however, there have been other cases reported in the upper Highway area where zebra, wildebeest, ostrich and giraffe also fall victim to the illegal hunting parties.

While hunting has always been in existence, it has become an emotional issue in recent years.

“We cannot allow this to continue. The numbers of wildlife are being depleted, some species like oribi are being driven to the point of extinction, with the risk to our wildlife heritage for future generations.

“At Tala the major impact is financial. Being a game reserve, the public come to view the animals. If these numbers dwindle it will impact on the visitors’ experience.

“Depending on the animals’ breeding

success every year, excess numbers are sold to other reserves and farms, thereby generating additional revenues to improve the reserve,” said Mike Nunan, general manager at Tala.

The illegal hunters target farms stretching from Howick to Pinetown.

Dog handlers caught trespassing claim they are fetching their dogs, who have wandered onto the property in error.

Landowners are therefore unable to press charges, except for trespassing.

“Patrols and fence checks are carried out where possible, but without extensive resources it is very difficult to successfully tackle and combat the problem.

“We have the Rave Wildlife and Rhino Project on site at Tala, who protect our rhino.

“Their presence on four-wheelers acts as a deterrent, as do their night-vision equipped vehicles. Their focus is on rhino movements, which is not necessarily where the poachers operate.

“We are in talks with the KZN Parks Honorary Rangers, who will hopefully patrol the property at night, on the lookout for hunting dogs and handlers,” said Divan Vermaak, Tala Reserve manager.

‘No low­cost houses, please’

THE R10 million low­cost housing devel­ opment in Imbali Unit 15 and 13 will accommodate people from other are­ as in the city.

Both the Department of Human Set­ tlements and Msunduzi Municipality con­ firmed that people from outside the area would be accommodated in Imbali since there was no other land available any­ where else.

Msunduzi spokesperson Thobeka Ma­ fumbatha said various people approached the presidential hotline, the Human Set­ tlements MEC through a ministerial in­ quiry and KZN provincial parliament for shelter in the Msunduzi Municipality.

“Several options have been explored in order to accommodate them at other pla­ ces but the available solution was to con­ struct houses in the sites that are owned by the department and the municipality,” she said.

But since the beneficiaries of these houses did not have land available in their respective wards, “the only way” was to look at the available land in Copesville and Imbali Unit 15 and 13.

Mafumbatha acknowledged the project was experiencing challenges as communi­ ties voiced their opinions that there should be no relocation and that people should be assisted in their own wards.

Spokesperson for the department Mbulelo Baloyi said the project was at planning stage, with construction antici­ pated to start in January 2017 subject to all the social issues being resolved.

“The department and municipality will engage the relevant stakeholders and hopefully the engagements will yield bet­ ter results and the targeted vulnerable groups can have adequate shelter,” Baloyi said. He said the RDP housing project would assist in breaking the chains of poverty and hopelessness experienced by those who applied for housing.

Imbali Unit 15 residents have expressed their fears that the values of their homes would drop and crime will increase after news that more than 100 low-cost houses are to be built on vacant land nearby.

A number of residents, who are passionate about their neighbourhood’s beauty and sense of place, are calling for recreational amenities to rather be developed on the vacant land. They fear the low-cost housing will bring many problems to their beloved area, including a drop in the value of their property.

The construction of the low-cost housing, situated on Cedar Road, is expected to start in January 2017 should all the issues around it be ironed out.

The RDP project is being developed

by Msunduzi Municipality and is funded by the Department of Human Settlements. Msuduzi spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said the value of the project is just over R10 million and is currently in its planning stages.

But, residents living in the area said they are against the project and want the land to be used for recreational amenities for people already living in the area.

A school principal also living in the area, who asked not to be named, said he had been living there since the 1980s.

The vacant land should be used for “something better”, he said.

“We need a hall or a swimming pool, tennis courts or library.

“This land has exponential growth and should be used to improve the quality of life for those already living here.”

The resident said the municipality called community meetings to discuss the development of the low-cost housing but many residents were against it.

Although there were residents against the development, the school principal said signatures were collected from people who were falsely promised the houses.

“I feel like the government took advantage of people who are not learned

and promised them houses for their children,” he said.

He added that the youth were also approached for comment and signatures backing the RDP houses.

“They [youth] cannot speak for us who have lived here for so long and who own houses here.

“I am not carrying a card for any political party but I am only looking after my investments,” he said.

Reverend Prince Zondi, who also owns a house in the area, said the lowcost housing should be built in areas such as the France township as it is needed there.

The reverend said the residents in Unit 15 paid high amounts for rates and should be the decision makers in such cases.

“We even tried meeting with the mayor, but that was fruitless,” he said.

Education risks losing half of grant SABELO NSELE THE provincial Department of Education is running the risk of losing out on a second transfer of the multimillion rand mathematics, science and technology grant, due to their underspending of the grant.

The department was allocated R62,4 million at the beginning of the 2016/2017 financial year from the national Department of Basic Education (DBE).

Documents presented to a finance portfolio committee mid-term budget performance hearing at the provincial legislature yesterday show the department had only spent 12,2% of the grant at the end of the mid-term, which was on 30 September.

A document presented by the provincial treasury said the department now has to explain itself to the DBE. “The department needs to provide an action plan in respect of the strategy to accelerate spending, as the Department of Basic Education has previously indicated they are considering withholding the second transfer based on the low spending,” said the department.

Head of department Enock Nzama was quick to point out that the expenditure had improved since then, saying it was currently

at 33% and R4,1 million had been committed.

“A turnaround strategy plan has been developed,” he said.

The department now has under five months to spend the grant fully.

Committee member Maggie Govender said it was unacceptable that the department was not prioritising the spending of the grant.

“This is not the first time there has been underspending in this grant. We heard the same story last year.”

The department also has to explain to the executive council how it will bring to zero the projected over-expenditure which is thought to be around R40 million.

The actual projected over-expenditure is R87,455 million. However, the provincial treasury indicated that it will allocate just over R40 million to the department during the budget adjustment, which will bring down the total over-expenditure to just over R40 million.

The committee also warned the department to keep staff numbers in check.

A report by provincial treasury showed the department’s staff had fluctuated from 105 617 employees in April to 106 728 in September.

State­of­the­art lab for Howick schools >> Science laboratory will help to improve the performance of pupils

N order to boost science education in the Howick area, Conlog (Pty) Ltd donated a state-of-the-art science laboratory at Asibemunye High School in Mphophomeni area last Thursday.

This project will not only benefit Asibemunye High, it will also benefit three other high schools in the area Umthombo Secondary, Mpophomeni Secondary and Mconjwana High.

The high schools are all within walking distance from Asibemunye, and in the spirit of ubuntu, the principal and staff at Asibemunye have agreed to share their new science lab-

oratory with their neighbouring schools using a roster.

The official handover of the laboratory took place at Asibemunye High last week, much to the delight of the pupils, teachers, principals and the deputy mayor of uMngeni Municipality.

Chief executive officer of Conlog, Logan Moodley said they wanted to provide pupils with the best possible resources with the objective of improving their maths and science results.

“South Africa’s quality of maths and science education has failed to im-

press for the second year in a row, as the country was ranked last among 140 economies on the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Competitiveness Index for 2015-2016.

“Many fall short in terms of both infrastructure and the provision of the tools necessary to give effect to efficient teaching and effective learning and we hope that our contribution is a small step to making an improvement,” added Moodley.

He said they are confident that this science laboratory will help to improve the performance of pupils at the local schools.

FTER weeks of calm at universities across the province, the violence has once again flared up in Pietermaritzburg with a building being torched on Tuesday.

Sources at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) said although there have been no mass gatherings or violent altercations with police, a small group of students allegedly “incited chaos” at the campus by torching an office and setting a bin alight inside another building.

It is believed the group allegedly torched an office under the cover of darkness at the university’s finance block on the main campus.

The students allegedly broke the window of the office and threw a Molotov cocktail through the burglar guards.

The fire quickly spread, gutting the entire office.

It is believed a guard, an employee of the private security company contracted by the university, Mi7, came across the fire during his patrols at about 5am.

The fire department was immediately contacted and firefighters extinguished the blaze.

When The Witness, arrived at the campus on Tuesday, the building’s fire alarm was still ringing and staff had abandoned the offices.

The building was cordoned off by tape and, peering through the windows, it appeared as though one office was left blackened by the fire.

The source said a computer and documents had been damaged in the fire.

“Classes and tests have been continuing smoothly, but this small group of students seem determined to incite chaos at the university. Students and staff just want to get on with their work until the semester ends. Let us hope we can do so in peace,” the source said.

Just before midday on Tuesday, there was another attempted arson attack.

A bin was set alight on the first floor of the Rabie Saunders building on the Agricultural campus.

The fire was quickly extinguished by university security before any major damage could be incurred.

No arrests have been made thus far, but university spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said risk management services has examined video footage of the area around the finance offices and a suspect has been taken in for questioning by police.

However, EFF MPL Vukani Ndlovu yesterday rubbished the claims, calling the statement “a bunch of lies”.

The statement said EFF members and students had travelled into KZN at the weekend with a plan to cause “maximum disruption” to academic institutions.

The Durban University of Technology, UKZN’s Edgewood campus, the Nelson Mandela Medical School and the Mangosuthu University of Technology were among the tertiary institutions said to be targeted.

“This will start off with peaceful protests and media conferences … during which marchers will do their best to provoke police and private security companies,” the statement read.

“Following on from these marches, small groups of Durban activists, bolstered by activists from other provin-

ces, plan to attack students and academics taking part in peaceful studies or writing exams.”

Ndlovu said the party would never dispatch its activists to disrupt, or plot to disrupt, any academic activity.

ESPITE the municipality’s efforts to constantly clean up rubbish on the side of Copesville Drive, people continue to dump there.

Scattered on the side of the main road entering Copesville from the Table Mountain intersection are piles of rubbish spilling on to the road. The debris comprises of broken car bumpers, water pipes, broken toilets, broken bricks, sawdust, pieces of torn clothes, pillows and fabric.

Diane Carson told The Witness that she drives past the “dumping site” every morning and afternoon on her way to and from work.

“The place is appalling and it gets worse every day. Sometimes the rubbish is scattered across the road,” said Carson.

“I have had nails and screws stuck in my tyres a couple of times from driving past that area and have had to change them because they were damaged.”

Carson added that she has seen

“The man was off-loading TV boxes and other rubbish from his van. When he saw me taking the picture he confronted me and said what he was doing did not concern me. He was very aggressive,” she said.

Copesville ward councillor Sphamandla Madlala said they have reported the matter, along with other dumping sites in the area, to the municipality a number of times.

“That dumping site has been a problem for over 15 years, even before I was the councillor.

“It is not even people from the community dumping rubbish there, it is companies that come to dump their industrial waste there,” said Madlala.

The councillor added that the municipality comes regularly to clear the area, but nothing has been done to put a stop to the illegal dumping.

How does it feel for Thabo Mbeki SIMPHIWE MKHIZE I WONDER how it feels to be the former president, Thabo Mbeki, as he watches a country he once ran with distinction after a great man named Nelson Mandela, going downhill slowly.

Does Mbeki think of the things he could have done differently while in power, and so save our country from becoming yet another flawed African state?

I marvelled when Mbeki emerged from his exile years as a beacon of light, a fountain of insightful thinking that asked such pertinent questions as where would the African National Congress (ANC) get funding from after it was unbanned as it readied itself to lead a country out of a deplored racist past for the first time after decades in the wilderness.

I wonder how it feels to be Mbeki when he reflects on the fact that he could not provide room for the political growth of three strategic potential modern leaders who could have taken the ANC to new heights i.e. South African business giants, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Tokyo Sexwale and the Mpumalanga law practitioner, Mathews

Phoswa.

Did the three really deserve to be labelled “anti-Mbeki radicals” bent on replacing the then thinker-state president and hence their subsequent disappearance or assuming a low profile as key players in South African politics?

The late African-American pastor, Myles Monroe, asserts that there is a need to prepare a successor to run things when one leaves a business operation behind due to death, illness, old-age, etc.

The same is true for family interests, community projects and political parties.

When Mbeki failed to prepare a predecessor for whatever reason, South Africa was bound to go astray.

Who did he hope or want to see take over the running of our beloved very rich country?

Certainly it wasn’t the current ANC president Zuma he had in mind. Who did he have in mind? Himself? Running things for eternity? Definitely it seemed like there was no plan for the post-Mbeki era when the pipe-smoking thinker-president was in charge.

Hence, anyone could take over aft-

er him depending on the support that person had or wielded. And that person happened to be Zuma. It could have been anyone, it would seem to me. Unfortunately for us, Ramaphosa, Sexwale and Phoswa were no longer available.

I wonder how it feels to be Mbeki when he reflects on the families the ANC of his time was able to elevate to the status of being potential boosters of the ANC coffers. Surely the ANC had a legitimate need to generate an income to run its offices, pay staff and mount political campaigns like any viable political party should do anywhere in the world.

Was Mbeki a good business leader with a huge potential to help his party generate money and guide the country’s economy to growth amid effective service delivery? Yes. That’s for sure.

Absolutely.

Was Mbeki a noble person with a clear vision as to who should take over after him or a succession plan in order to sustain his achievements? I don’t think so.

I don’t know how it feels to be Mbeki as he watches a political party that led a great people out of political hard-

Did he have the potential to help the country get another credible leader after him? Of course, yes. Did he use that potential? Certainly not.

Did he have an opportunity to prepare a predecessor for South Africa?

Indeed he did. Did he use that opportunity? Of course not. Why? Because, in my view, unlike Mandela, Mbeki was not ready to hand over to someone else.

Zuma did not create Shabir Shaik and the Gupta family as well as the French company that was responsible for the arms deal that did not employ local people as stipulated in official documents associated with its brief.

Zuma may have benefited from these families like all politicians do the world over, but he was not responsible for their association with the ANC. So his dealings with these families were as a result of his work as one of the leaders of the ANC. And I am sure the world is full of political leaders whose relationships with business people that benefit from governments can be said to be questionable.

In short, Zuma cannot be solely

held responsible for the things that have gone wrong in the oldest political party on the continent.

Zuma is generally perceived as having used ANC-linked businesses for personal benefit while Mbeki intended to use them for the benefit of the ANC as a party that needed to swell its coffers for operational purposes.

Why did Mbeki reportedly help Zuma to generate money for his own benefit in defiance of the bigger objective?

Maybe to set him up to fail and be consumed by the fire of his own immediate need for resources.

I wonder how it feels to be Mbeki as he watches the country he could have led very well going astray. Does he laugh at the state of affairs or feel bad that he could have done certain things differently as he smokes his wonderful pipe in the home the taxpayer paid for.

As we rush to attack Zuma for the things that are going wrong in the movement, history must necessarily judge Mbeki too.

NPA boss has let us down IT is with regret that I write about on our NPA boss Shaun Abrahams who I was so proud.

What was he thinking when he decided first of all to have a private meeting with President Jacob Zuma, thereafter appear on national television to charge Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, and soon after drop the charges?

We, especially the Coloured community, were so proud of him and hoped he would do his job well. He has let us all down by his actions.

The people of South Africa want justice for all the perpetrators, who are abusing their powers in this country, and Abrahams was the one we thought would do his job and grant us, the people, the justice we deserve.

He should have gone to Thuli Madonsela for her to teach him the ropes on how to go about prosecuting members of Parliament who are doing nothing but lining their pockets and I guarantee he would have stood out like a hero.

I think we need people who are not chosen by the ruling party to represent the public in all these never-ending fraud and corruption sagas.

A

N upcoming local deejay and businessman is set to put Pietermaritzburg on the map, musically.

Simphiwe “Muvo De Icon” Mshengu (24), from Naiperville, who owns Icon Muzic record label, says with the expertise he gained while completing his digital music production and composition course at Soul Candi Institute of Music he wants to be known as one of the most respected deejays in the country.

Mshengu, a public relations (PR) graduate, says he was passionate about music from an early age.

“When I enrolled for my public relations course I had a plan, I didn’t just study PR, I knew it would be beneficial in the long run because I wanted to

PR and music go hand in hand, as a deejay I know I will not be reliant on anyone to help me in promoting my craft because it’s a skill I acquired through studying PR.” After finishing his diploma in 2010 Mshengu left for Johannesburg where he enrolled for a one-year course with Soul Candi Institute for Music.

“Soul Candi opened me up to new opportunities and changed my understanding of music.

“It grew me musically and moulded me as a DJ and I really learnt a lot. Now I’m ready to impart that knowledge to other upcoming musicians and deejays in my city.”

During his stay in Johannesburg Mshengu made a brief television appearance on Ka-Ching, a game show on Mzansi Magic. He was also a finalist on 1’s and 2’s, a DJ talent search competition that aired on SABC1.

Mshengu who says he looks up to DJ Tira and says he believes he can start a movement in Pietermaritzburg that could take over the music industry.

“As artists in Pietermaritzburg, I think we should unite to be able to break into the industry.

“I admire the likes of DJ Tira who has penetrated the industry without moving to Johannesburg.

“I think Pietermaritzburg has the potential of doing the same thing and I want to pioneer that movement.”

He said he is excited to have a music video for his new hit single On It that features local vocalist Vanessa Jackson, which is coming out soon.

“We just shot the music video and it will be aired on Channel O, Trace, MTV and Soweto TV before the end of the month.

“The single is also available for download on iTunes and the link for the music video will also be distributed to our fans on social media as soon as it is out.”

Creating awareness through dance NOKUTHULA KHANYILE >>nokuthula.khanyile@media24.com A TOTAL of 25 young people, specialising in contemporary dance contact improvisation, will be performing at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum tomorrow to create awareness about the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

They were part of a series of workshops hosted by world renowned dance teacher and instructor, Bernd Knappe from Germany during his visit to South Africa in August to teach this dance technique.

Contact improvisation is a shapeless under-toned movement practise, where people get lost in sensations and unclear boundaries.

Lwazi Nsele, Black Rock Management director, who is co-ordinating the dance showcase, in partnership with Skhebhe KaMhloli Trading and Projects, said the theme of the dance showcase will focus on drug abuse.

“Dance is a universal language around the world. Through this showcase we want to educate and engage the audience on the scourge of drug abuse that is terrorising communities and as a result

Nsele said they also want to attract young people to join this dance revolution to get away from a life of crime.

“Knappe is keen on coming back to the country to facilitate more workshops on contact improvisation. When he was here he loved the enthusiasm and energy of the group he taught.”

He said they have invited victims of drugs to be part of the showcase and an open dialogue that will be held on the day.

“We will have an informal programme to address the issue of drugs and how it is impacting on our communities. We have also invited organisations like the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, the police and doctors to share their expertise on how we can cleanse the community of drugs,” he said.

Sports equipment drive by BMS NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za BLUFF Meat Supply has started a sports equipment drive in an effort to kit underprivileged schools in Pietermaritzburg that cannot afford to purchase sports equipment and kits for their pupils.

Mark Lederle of BMS said that through the years working with many of the poorer schools he has seen how excited the children get to be involved in a sporting activity, but often do not have the money to buy equipment.

“We are appealing to the community to contribute any sports equipment, including soccer and rugby balls, hockey sticks, cricket bats or soccer boots.

“It’s coming to the end of the year and often we, who are able to, change our children’s sports equipment and kits because they are too small for them, this could be used by children who have nothing,” he said.

Lederle asked that all donations be in good working condition and suitable to be used by someone else.

He said people who are willing to make cash donations should rather buy the equipment and drop it off in the boxes that will be placed at Victoria and Market Road BMS stores.

“We will literally take anything that will keep the children busy. A fit body is a healthy mind,” said Lederle.

Tribute to scientist, teacher, activist >> Croeser had enormous skills in various aspects of heritage PHOTO: SUPPLIED

ETER Croeser (67), who died at his home in Prestbury on 29 October, was a highly dedicated person who touched and changed the lives of many.

Croeser, fondly known as Khehla, played a leading role in the development of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, first as a natural sciences researcher specialising in spiders, and later as a teacher.

He retired while he was a chief education officer. Such was his commitment to his work and development of young people that he left an indelible mark in whatever role he played.

His research focus was on the taxonomy and systematic relationships of group African sparassidae huntsman spiders for which he became a world expert.

Croeser was awarded his BSc Honours degree in 1984 and his MSc degree in 1996, both from the former University of Natal. Three new spider species were named after him as the collector of the specimens - Caddella croeseri, Penestomus croeseri and Afroceta croeseri.

While Croeser had great expertise as a researcher, his real passion was in working with pupils, nurturing them and exposing them to opportunities.

He was very critical of the poor facilities in African schools, poor standard of education in township and rural schools.

He wanted to enhance education of African children so that they could succeed in high school and eventually at tertiary institutions.

In 1991 he became an education officer and eventually the Chief Education Officer for the KwaZulu-Natal Museum (then known as Natal Museum).

Croeser was deeply concerned by lack of resources and support system for Zulu-speaking pupils. He was the driving force in the establishment of the Sabalala Nolwazi Environmental Youth Club, a programme, that among others, provided after-school-pupils’ support in natural sciences and tutoring for Zulu-speaking pupils.

Fully aware of the challenges that black pupils faced, Croeser assisted many others who struggled with their science subjects. Most of them went on to successfully finish their degrees and find employment with various organisations.

Croeser had enormous skills in various aspects of heritage like the creative arts (poetry, drama, creative writing, and music) and crafts. He requested the museum to provide a venue for young aspiring poetry and drama students who had no place to train.

He assisted getting financial support for many of these students to continue with their studies and practical skills development.

His association with the Natal Society Foundation Trust opened up previ-

Soni holds a basic medicine degree, diploma in family medicine, diploma in forensic health care and a diploma in HIV management.

“Family physicians are what is commonly known as general practitioners. We are considered as the family gate-keepers. Patients first consult us and if the need arises, we refer them to specialists,” Soni said.

Today, he is diving into a new era with his practice, and is moving to new spacious premises in the city centre at 371 Jabu Ndlovu Street.

To him, this move marks a massive milestone for his progressive career.

Before moving to the new property and contemplating the possible expansion of the surgery, he said he first considered the facilities situated within the radius of the property.

Conveniently, the new surgery is perfectly located in the hub of the city, with three major hospitals in close proximity - St Anne’s Hospital, Midlands Hospital and Pietermaritzburg Mediclinic.

In addition to location, Soni said he considered the aspect of convenience and accessibility to accommodate all of his patients.

The new place has ample parking, which provides stress relief for driving patients, and is also close to main transportation facilities thus providing easy access to patients who rely on public transport.

The old practice had been running for over 13 years in Church Street and is now part of the history framed on the wall.

With over 30 years’ experience, Soni is one of the few available doctors who still offers a tailored health care system to low-income earners.

“I believe in offering cost effective medical care and making their consultations a rewarding experience.

The Trust publishes the annual journal Natalia through Croeser’s publishing company, Khehla Publishers, which produces a range of small books of historical, scientific and cultural interest.

Croeser was an author, and his latest book, Traditional Useful Plants of Africa – Their Cultivation and Use” he recently authored with Phakamani Xaba, provides useful insights into his knowledge of traditional medicinal plants. Some of his other publications are listed at the end of this tribute.

In the early years of the digital revolution, Croeser was the museum’s IT point man and dealt with people’s frustrated tempers with enormous patience. He gave the museum presentations that were typically enriched with his raunchy sense of humour.

Croeser was an advocate for transformation. He was one of the leaders of the staff union at the museum. He advised management in many aspects of staff training and development in the Heritage Sector.

He assisted in the revision and development of many policies that

helped the museum to comply with the Labour Relations Act of 1995.

In December 2008 Croeser retired from the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, ending a colourful career that spanned 26 years.

Croeser’s passion and quest for heritage development and youth empowerment never ended despite his official retirement.

He assisted the museum with research on Indigenous Knowledge Systems and provided advice and research for the development of the Freedom Exhibition and Bird Exhibition that were completed recently.

In August 2015, Croeser was appointed by the minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum Council for a period of three years. He served on the Council’s Human Resources and Remuneration Committee.

As a council member, Croeser was dedicated to his work and brought vast knowledge, based on his research and education expertise.

His death came just a week before council and management were to hold an important strategic planning workshop that his vast knowledge and strategic thinking would have provided valuable direction to the future of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum.

Council and staff of the KwaZuluNatal Museum send their condolences to his family.

Khehla has left a never-ending legacy. We pay tribute to Croeser the visionary scholar, researcher, advocate for quality education for all pupils, colleague in nation-building and transformation.

“Here, we also have a multicultural staff and try by all means to make our patients comfortable. We talk to them in a language they understand better,” Soni said.

He feels that his contact with his patients is priceless.

“I enjoy my job and there is nothing that fulfils me more than to take care of someone’s health, it’s just a good rewarding experience,” he said.

He also emphasises the importance of a leading a healthy lifestyle. Subsequently, earlier this year he reached another milestone after completing

his first full marathon within his required time limit.

“I believe in a healthy lifestyle where I always advise my client to eat healthy and moderately.

“Everything in life should be moderate and excessiveness of anything can lead to harm,” he said.

The 50-year-old doctor certainly walks his talk.

EING comfortable in your own skin is what the Department of Health has been promoting over the past few months while encouraging people to stay away from skin-lightening creams that have serious consequences.

“Again, we reaffirm confidence and pride in oneself and declare that skin bleaching represents a profound, yet subliminal hatred of one’s self. It is time indigenous Africans and Indians

embrace natural beauty and love the skin they are in,” said KZN Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo.

According to CANSA’s health specialist, Professor Michael Herbst, the incidence of skin cancer is said to be higher among individuals who use skin whiteners.

“Skin lightening, available as creams, capsules, are commonly known as bleaching creams, whiteners, skin brighteners, or fade, work by reducing a pigment called melanin in the skin.

“Most people use lighteners to lighten their skin, which has become a fad among many individuals with

dark skin tones, while others use it to treat ‘skin problems’ such as freckles, age spots, acne scars, or discoloration related to hormones,” he said.

Herbst explained that by thinning the skin and less melanin, people are more likely to experience skin damage due to UV radiation thus increasing their risk of skin cancer and ageing.

Repeated use of skin whitening creams may cause thinning of the skin, a condition that may be characterised by severe bruising, exposed capillaries, stretch marks and other serious problems. Acne suffers also use creams, which includes steroids, to lighten their scars however these

creams can cause blocked pores and lead to the development of new acne.

“There is also a link between skinlightener cream use and diabetes,” said Herbst.

High blood sugar can lead to diabetes. Some creams can cause increased bold sugar levels, which is risky for those who are already diabetic.

Ochronosis, dark patches on the skin, are a possible risk of repeated skin whitening. These patches are on the surface of the skin and are particularly stubborn and difficult to remove.

Use of these creams could also increase the risk of developing leukoderma, a skin condition where certain areas of skin stop producing melanin.

Once the skin stops producing melanin, patches of pink skin appear.

“Most of the products cause thin-

ning of the skin, early ageing, as well as skin cancers. Very often users complain of ‘white spots’ appearing on their skin. Many of the products contain mercury, certain steroids, vitamin A, or hydroquinone,” said Herbst.

Mercury causes kidney and nerve damage, and can lead to psychiatric problems. It is banned in cosmetics in South Africa.

Hydroquinone is permitted only in prescribed medicines, and then only in concentrations below 2%, because it can cause permanent damage to the skin.

The two topical steroids identified were betamethasone and clobetasol propionate, which are classed as medicines and are, therefore, illegal in products marketed as cosmetics.

These products thin the skin and make it prone to infection.

KWAMASHU resident Dudu Busani Dube’s three books have taken the African reading market by storm. To date Hlomu - The Wife, Zandile - The Resolute and Naledi - His Love have sold over 3 000 copies.

The 34-year-old print journalist started writing her first book in May 2014. All are written in the first person.

“I did that because I wanted readers to use their imagination and feel as though they are living her life as they read. The response Ihave received and continue to receive is overwhelming.

“I always knew I would write a book at some point in my life. I just didn’t know when.”

In high school Dube was rebellious and didn’t recognise her talent until her teacher challenged her to write a piece, which made her famous at school.

“She later advised me to study journalism, and it is the best advice I have ever been given,” she says.

As a working journalist, Dube covers hard news, particularly court cases, and has sat through the trials of some of the country’s worst and most dangerous criminals. But when it

Hlomu - The Wife tells of a young woman named Mahlomu who meets a man, Mqhele Zulu, and falls in love.

She’s happy but can’t help noticing certain things about him that make her uncomfortable. He has money, a lot of it, which she finds suspicious.

Zulu and his seven brothers have a dark past, which they have never confronted. Their father was a warlord from Mbuba village in Greytown. He died in a mob-justice incident with their mother.

When Zulu asks Hlomu to marry him, she has no choice but to force the brothers to return to Mbuba and face

their past.

The second book, Zandile - The Resolute, tells the story of the eldest Zulu brother, Nkosana, while the third book is narrated by Naledi, who ends up marrying another of the brothers, Qhawe.

Dube said she wanted to write a book that could be easily read and would allow people to find a bit of themselves in the characters. Her sales show she has succeeded.

OCAL beauty, Alisha Jetu, has made it to the top 30 of the Miss Commonwealth South Africa pageant.

The 20-year-old, who is passionate about pageants and charity, is the only contestant from Pietermaritzburg and one of two in KwaZulu-Natal.

Born and bred in Pietermaritzburg Jetu, is one of a set of triplets and matriculated from Dunveria Secondary School. She lives with her mother is Orient Heights and is excited to begin her journey in the pageant world.

“I was always interested in pageants growing up, but suffered with very low self-confidence when I was younger. I started going to modelling classes at Irene’s Models and graduated last year.

“I decided to enter the competition because I wanted to get into pageants.

This is my first experience and, even though it’s very challenging, I am real-

ly looking forward to it,” she said.

Jetu said that she is looking forward to the opportunity of being an ambassador of change.

“I have always been willing to help others where I can and inspire young women and help them in some way.”

She is studying a diploma in early childhood development and hopes to open her own crèche once she qualifies.

She also wanted to complete her degree in law, but she had to give it up once she started working because the workload was not manageable.

Jetu hopes her story will inspire other young women who are introverts and lack confidence to make a name for themselves.

“I just want people to know that they must be the best they can be and find strength in self-motivation, which has been a key factor for me,” she said.

Join the Midlands Chamber Choir and the Pietermaritzburg City Orchestra for ‘Noel 2016’ at the Hilton College Theatre.

THE Pietermaritzburg City Orchestra is hosting its annual festive season concert, “Noel 2016”, in collaboration with the Midlands Chamber Choir, at 7pm on Saturday, 26 November at the Hilton College Theatre.

This will be the second time the choir and orchestra have joined forces in what will hopefully become the standard for Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands.

Audiences can expect favourite tunes, including Leroy Anderson’s Christmas Festival and Sleigh Ride, as well as carols like John Rutter’s Shepherd’s Pipe Carol and The Very Best Time of Year.

This year also marks the third time to feature a new composition by the orchestra’s Peter van

der Merwe, with his 15 variations on St Thomas Wake, an old English carol, which is sure to delight the audience who have an appreciation for music with a classical feel.

The concert promises to be a delight to both old and young, and would be a perfect opportunity to introduce the little ones to orchestral music.

HE two-day environmental education festival, Happy Earth, to be held on 20 and 21 April, 2017 in the KZN Botanical Garden is free for schools, however, transport remains a big challenge for many.

Rotary and the Botanical Society are faithful sponsors of the festival, however, to strengthen the outreach of the festival, more sponsorship is needed. The aim is to supply refreshments for all pupils attending.

“With no major sponsorship at the moment, the organisers rely on local supermarkets and brands to help provide for the over 1 400 pupils attending the festival. Sunshine Bread is a major supporter as well as Parklane, Mayors Walk Spar and Fairfield Dairy.

“To ensure that all 1 400 pupils can be fed, I appeal to the public and other supermarkets to step up to the challenge and to support the festival. Any donations and help are appreciated,” said Pandora Long, Happy Earth Fes-

tival founder.

To increase the impact at the festival Long said they want to hand out learning resources to attending teachers from over 50 schools. Last year’s learning resource was a booklet sponsored by the KZN Museum, which provided the teachers with contact information for all participating organisations and information about environmental learning on offer.

For the fifth year celebration, the organisers would like to grow this pack and include more teaching resources.

“It would be wonderful to be able to consolidate many of the experiential activities offered at the festival over the past five years into lesson and activity plans that can encourage and guide teachers starting to teach environmental education and manage projects at their schools for the first time.

“The learning resource is also an excellent opportunity for supporter

branding, as the bags or files can have logos on them and they can convey the two key messages for the development of environmental stewardship and leadership,” said Long.

Each year Working on Fire sends a team of over 30 young people who set up and run the festival, however, there is always a need for help from the public.

“Some schools arrive early and we

are looking for volunteers with a passion for nature, children and education to share their special vocation with the children, for instance taking them bird watching, an interpretive trail in the Botanical Gardens, telling them a story or with the help of the organisers, play some simple environmental education games.

“Help is always needed with catering with over 1 400 sandwiches need-

ing to be made,” said Long.

The Happy Earth Forum sponsorship request is for corporate business and the public to fund the initiative at R100 per pupil.

T Anne’s Enviro Club girls once again opened their hearts to enrich the lives of others and bartered their entire 2016 recyclable waste collection for a classroom of green desks, which they donated to a fellow recycling school, Fezokuhle Primary in Imbali.

rest, said they felt blessed to help the school.

Forrest and her pupils were warmly welcomed by the principal, J.K. Dladla, his staff and pupils.

Dladla said the desks would beautify the classroom and be stronger and safer for pupils to use.

The desks, made from un-recycla-

ble materials, are assembled at the Wildlands Recycling Depot in Howick.

St Anne’s has consistently been one of Wildlands top recycling schools and participates in many of the sustainable schools initiatives offered by Wildlands, in partnership with Nedbank.

Laddsworth Primary School left the old premises at the site of the now Laddswood Lodge, and walked across the road to their new classrooms at our current school. It is amazing how far this school has come since its humble beginnings on the back verandah of Miss Daisy Ladds’s home. The school was privileged to have three of the teachers, who taught at Laddsworth in 1988, still at the school, who remember the excitement as well as the hard work in the big move to the new school premises. HIS weekend’s Greater Edendale Race - 10km and five kilometre - will not only celebrate its 10th birthday on 13 November, but will also have a celebrity touch to it.

I thought this is the perfect platform to join hands and raise awareness during the Greater Edendale Race.

Edendale is also very close to my heart because I was born and grew up there.

The first time I officially played for a soccer team and took part in the track events was at Wadley Stadium.

Many years ago the Greater Edendale area was a multiracial and multicultured area. It was just like a rainbow nation with many race groups living in harmony.

People are encouraged to bring old running shoes, sports clothes or equipment and there will be a deposit box at the start and finish of the race.

Naidoo started collecting old sports equipment, shoes and sports clothes for underprivileged schools a long

time ago. The deposit box is at the entrance of the shop.

“We always encourage our customers and communities to donate old sports stuff that they don’t need instead of throwing them away,” said Naidoo.

Njilo is very passionate about helping needy communities.

“I am looking forward to the event.

I have to get fit so that I can enjoy and have fun in the race,” said Njilo.
