A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto­ ries.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka­ ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

CIENCE boffin Bathabile Mpofu (36), of Pinetown has invented a physical science kit, ChemStart, containing 52 experiments that can be used by high-school pupils at home.

Mpofu was born in Nongoma, but grew up in Ulundi and describes her childhood as happy.

“When I was young, my dad bought an old car and I used to drive in it with him. I would complain if he was overtaken by another car. One day he was teaching my mom how to drive and she drove so slowly I said that ants must also be overtaking us. I had a very happy childhood with my parents.”

Mpofu attended Impumelelo High in Mahlabathini and later did her Bachelor of Science (BSc) in chemistry and cell biology as majors at UKZN, focusing on chemistry at BSc honours level.

She also completed a business management diploma at UCT and is currently doing her MBA at UCT. “ChemStart is a physical science kit for use by high-school pupils at home.

There is one experiment for every week of the year. The concepts covered are Caps [Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements] aligned and can be used by pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 12.

“The kit explains the concepts, provides instruction on how to conduct the experiments, explains the science behind the reactions observed and explains the application of the science in real life.

ChemStart unleashes a scientist in every child who uses it. Every child should make a career decision after they have gone through the kit.”

She said the invention was inspired by realising how unprepared she was for science tertiary education.

“I struggled all the way to the end. I fortunately became a technician at the UKZN and could see first-hand students from a similar background struggling with this, and I knew I had to assist somehow.

“This is why last year I started visiting schools demonstrating science experiments, but that was not enough, because I was still the one doing experiments. ChemStart was developed to give pupils a chance to do this them-

selves. A shocking statistic from equal education.org.za claims that out of 21 000 ordinary schools, only about 1 200 have stocked labs. You can imagine then how many pupils are in need of this box at high-school level.”

She said she sees herself in five year time supplying kits for physics, life sciences kits and for countries outside SA. “I also want to encourage girls to study science so they can create things that we need.

“What they learn at school must not just be information or data, but knowledge, and they must know how this knowledge is applied. This way they can use that knowledge to create new solutions and they can start their own company providing a service or product based on that knowledge.”

Cycling indaba this weekend CYCLING South African and the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation is hosting the National Cycling Indaba on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October at the Garden Court Marine Parade in Durban.

The indaba will invite discussion about the strategic direction of the federation with particular focus on transformation and development – what needs to be done, and how can it be implemented – with Friday’s discussion focusing on road safety.

Guest speakers include Rohini Naidoo, Head of Department KwaZulu-Natal Sport and Recreation, Dr Willie Basson of Eminent Persons Group, Robyn Theliso of ZenOne, MEC of Transport Mxolisi Kaunda, Robert Vogel and Gordon Laing of Pedal Power Association, Marc Bainbridge Garmin Product manager and speakers from various academies from around the country.

Rooting out corruption in the City

RCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu recently celebrated his 85th birthday in Cape Town, however he looked ill and announced he was ready to die.

According to News24 Tutu was quoted saying “Today, I myself, am even closer to the departures hall than arrivals, so to speak, and my thoughts turn to how I would like to be treated when the time comes.

“For those suffering unbearably and coming to the end of their lives, merely knowing that an assisted death is open to them can provide immeasurable comfort.”

Tutu’s assisted death issue has caused a stir nationwide - some believe it’s his choice to do whatever he wants with his life while others say it is wrong.

Pinetown Fever spoke to people to find out their views about assisted death.

KwaDabeka resident Nombuso Zulu: “It sounds wrong and unlawful, but I think it’s a choice because we don’t know the pain and suffering he is going through.

“If he feels he is ready to kick the bucket by being assisted with some medication or injection, then we must respect his wishes.”

Andile Khumalo from Pinetown said: “I’m a traditional man so our culture does not allow such things. I

I believe that if a person dies he or she will be united with the ancestors and if one chooses to be assisted with their death then you will be a lost soul and won’t get a chance to be with your ancestors.”

Nosihle Ndlovu from Pinetown: “I wouldn’t do it, but at the same time the old man is suffering and he cannot bare the pain of being sick, so it’s his choice, we can’t judge him.”

Zola Madlala from KwaNdengezi: “I am a Christian and I believe that a person should wait for his time and Archbishop Tutu should know better as a religious leader. He is misleading people with this issue and I don’t think our law allows it. It’s like he is contradicting the Bible. We know he is suffering, but he is making all the wrong decisions. His family should support him until his day comes and make him realise that as much as he is sick, they still need him.”

Wikipedia defines assisted death as assisted suicide. “Assisted suicide is sui­ cide committed with the aid of another person, sometimes a physician. Phy­ sician­assisted suicide is often confused with euthanasia [sometimes called mercy killing]. In case of euthanasia the physician administers the means of death, usually a lethal drug.”

delivery a high-level delegation, comprising senior political leadership and officials, will visit various service delivery sites in eThekwini to assess the working environment of staff and evaluate the level of service rendered to the public.

These visits began this month, aimed at inculcating a culture of excellence in the public service, instil and rebuild good ethics, morale and professionalism.

A report tabled before the Executive Committee today outlined the roll-out in eThekwini, which has been divided into five regions that will be visited by teams during Public Service Week.

Public Service Week forms part of Public Service Month, which is an important national Batho Pele vehicle. The roll-out will run until December.

Councillors from each sub-committee in the City will be assigned to the teams.

Public Service Month is a service delivery mechanism aimed at strengthening visibility and access by taking quality services closer to where people live. It is an annual service delivery event embraced by all spheres of government.

As part of the visits, there will be engagement sessions with ratepayers as well as exhibitions, campaign initiatives and interventions. This is an opportunity to take services to the people and assess the progress of implemented programmes.

Teams will visit service centres such as Sizakala Customer Service Centres, libraries and clinics to assess the service offered to the public and how it can be improved in five regions.

Serial rapist caught in KwaDabeka INANDA Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit made a breakthrough when Mthobisi Mnyandu (28,) was arrested for a string of rapes in the KwaDabeka area.

He was arrested in 2010, but absconded his bail application conditions and has been on the run since then.The suspect allegedly committed the offences in KwaDabeka, Pinetown and Inanda from 2010 until 2015.

He would walk with the victims and promise them jobs, but on the way he threatened them and dragged them to the nearby bushes

THE eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede reiterated her commitment to rooting out corruption in the City and ensuring good governance during her weekly report-back to the executive committee last week.

Gumede asked municipal officials and the public to report any suspicions they may have of corrupt behaviour immediately to the City’s Integrity and Investigations Unit to be thoroughly investigated.

“As I said in my inaugural speech, I am serious about tackling corruption in the City. This cannot be done overnight as processes have to be followed.

“I will report back to this committee on progress made in this regard,” she said.

Her commitment that the City means business and can be trusted to efficiently manage the public purse is evident in the Back to Basics Report for August.

The report states that 219 fraud and corruption instances were reported in August, with forensic investigations initiated for all the cases.

There were 45 disciplinary cases instituted on fraud and corruption during August with seven dismissals for fraud and corruption during the month. Furthermore, sanctions have been made against perpetrators of fraud, corruption and maladministration.

Gumede, in her address, said eThekwini was a caring City and this was evident through various initiatives to empower residents.

Multitask, set goals to get ahead

MARGARET HIRSCH TODAY, there is so much pressure on young people to perform, do well and be successful.

As a young person trying to get ahead and pass their exams, there is sometimes so much to deal with in life – for instance, divorced parents, parent’s part­ ners and their children, teachers who are distracted, and of course, bullying peers.

They also have the decision to make when they leave school ­ whether to go to work or continue study­ ing.

In my life there was no choice, there was just no money to go to university so I went straight to work.

Then I decided to take a gap year and work overseas ­ it was the best thing I could have done, because by the time my peers were qualifying, I was earning more than them, and if two people went to apply for a job, and one had experience and the other had a degree,

the chances were that the one with experience would get the job.

Today if you really want to get ahead you have to be able to multitask. Either work in the day and study at night, or study in the day and work at night. It’s hard, but there is an old saying that you can “pay now and play later or play now and pay later”.

Today’s pupils coming out of matric or students coming of university want to start where their parents left off and as one of my mentees said to me yesterday, it took her a long time to realise she was not going to be an overnight success.

In fact no one is an overnight success ­ it takes many years of hard work to get to where you want to be.

The reason that most people don’t get anywhere in life is because they don’t have any written­down goals.

I have found this to be essential ­ you can’t hit a target you can’t see.

It’s even better to have a vision board with photos that you can look at and aim towards reaching, every day.

If you do this you will be astounded how quickly you achieve the things you only dreamt about having.

This stretches to relationships, achievements at work and at home, as well as health issues, finance, etc.

When I speak to groups of young people today, I start off by asking them to repeat after me It’s possible. It’s possible. It’s possible.

They need to know it is possible to have everything you want, be anyone you want to be and do anything you want to do so long as you take one step towards that goal every single day.

With a heavy heart

WAS on my way back from Swaziland on Sunday when I had an uncomfortable feeling at the border post.

Swaziland is not much different from South Africa and only through the process of getting your passport stamped do you realise that you have been in another country.

The process was quite efficient on the Swazi side. The building is pleasant and well-ventilated with well-marked counters and plenty of staff on duty, even on a Sunday, to keep the queues moving relatively quickly.

It was another story on the South African side. The computer systems were down. A narrow passage in front of the immigration counters means there can only be a squash of people, no queues.

Three counters were in operation with tired, irritated officials having physically to write down people’s details instead of scanning passports.

People pushed and jostled in the small space to get to the counters. An elderly woman standing near me struggled to breathe. After an hour, my passport was stamped and we were able to re-enter South Africa.

There was a brief moment when I had a sense of foreboding about coming home. It was not the Home Affairs’ system malfunction that caused this, although it is depressing that we cannot get simple things right to welcome people into our country.

It was the realisation that South Africa is in such a state of turmoil that I was tempted momentarily to remain in the tiny monarchy with repressive practices.

After a month of violence on South Africa’s university campuses, a settlement to the highereducation funding crisis seems further than ever. Talks between students and management have broken down, many students have been

arrested and injured, and several institutions are unable to continue with lectures and tests.

The government is maintaining a safe distance from the chaos, periodically condemning the violence and damage to property. While many senior leaders in the ANC and government, including President Jacob Zuma and his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa, have distinguished themselves as conflict mediators, they have made no effort to intervene to stop the mayhem.

Zuma’s response to weeks of disrupted learning and almost daily running battles between police and students was to appoint a ministerial task team to look into the issues. It shows little appreciation for the intensity of the protests or the fact that a generation of young people are begging for his attention.

There are other things that cause despair.

The campaign in support of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is not only because people believe he is being unfairly persecuted for political purposes. Gordhan, along with former South African Revenue Services officials Ivan Pillay and Oupa Magashula, is expected to appear in court on November 2 on fraud charges.

The credibility of the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority is heavily compromised by the way they have pursued Gordhan and momentum is building for a fight back from ordinary South Africans.

Despite many senior ANC leaders and members of Cabinet also rallying behind Gordhan, there is a determination from some in the state to drag him into the dock by any means possible.

The consequences of Gordhan being charged may result in further economic woes for South Africa at a time when we desperately need stability and growth.

While South Africa has many democratic safeguards enshrined in our Constitution, it has been comforting to have someone of the calibre of Thuli Madonsela serving as our public protector.

The expiration of her term has left many people feeling despondent and vulnerable that she is no longer able to stand guardian over us.

Before she left office, Zuma and Co-operative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen blocked Madonsela from releasing her “state capture” report into the affairs of the Gupta family. One can only imagine what they have to hide.

As we drove across the border I realised my heart was heavy because our country is under attack from itself.

Time for ANC to go back to basics ON 27 October, South Africans will celebrate the life of long-serving ANC president O.R. Tambo, which coincides with Red October, revolution month.

Tambo was a dedicated and prominent leader who built the ANC under difficult circumstances while in exile.

Today, the country is desperate for leadership of his calibre to put the ruling party in a better position to deal with the challenges that we experience in our life time.

I believe he would say anniversaries cannot only celebrate the past.

We must recall and acclaim our history, but more importantly, we must use the past to arm ourselves for the future, to learn lessons and to strengthen our resolve and commitment.

Furthermore, the founders of the African National Congress vested in the organisation the historic responsibility of uniting the South African nation across the boundaries of colour, race and creed.

My plea to our ANC component structures is that it is time to go back to basics and stop organising marches similar to the march that was led by the ANC Youth League with the aim of booting out the Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordon.

I urge the ANC members, as we celebrate Tambo’s life, to learn from him and work towards his wishes for a democratic South Africa for all.

INETOWN Fever chatted to Ashley Eddy from Cowies Hill, one of the top 14 finalists in the Mr South Africa 2016 contest.

The finals will be held in Johannesburg on 24 November.

Pinetown Fever (PF): Where and when were you born?

Ashley Eddy (AE): I was born in Durban on 3 June, 1988 PF: What are your hobbies?

AE: Swimming is definitely one of my favourites, and track and field, 100m, 200m and 400m sprinting, graphic designing, portrait sketching and inspiring others are the best they can be every day.

PF: Take me through your childhood.

AE: I grew up in Durban, with one parent, in a home where having a meal every day was a sacrifice because my mother tried to keep us healthy.

I was a boy who attended a government school and persevered to go onto achieving excellent mechanical and electrical engineering qualifications.

I was a young boy who grew up in a diverse and multiracial South Africa and who had more multiracial best friends than you can count on your fingers because I loved their different cultures, who they are as people and how welcome I was into their families with

open arms. I am a strong, loving individual of positivity in health, people and nature.

I am a very out-going individual who loves socialising and I can easily relate to a variety of cultures, people and walks of life as I love the amazing diversity of people our beautiful country has.

I love helping where I can everyday to make a change in others lives. I pride myself because I have to do more for others as this brings me great satisfaction.

I am also a very strong willed and highly driven individual who has huge dreams, goals and ambitions.

I am highly driven by these dreams and like to get tasks completed as soon and as professionally as possible. This may relate to personal goals or community projects I work on.

For those who do not know me as yet, I am a character, I love joking, laughing and re-enacting movie scenes - I want to be an actor one day.

It gives me a good laugh and brings a smile to many faces.

The point is to have fun while being constructively busy and working towards a dream and goal I set.

PF: Where did you study?

AE: I attended Addington Primary School in my junior years. I also attended George Campbell Technical High School in my senior years. I completed my mechanical and electrical engi-

neering studies at Toyota South Africa Manufacturing Training Centre.

PF: When did you start your modeling career.

AE: I have been modeling since 2009, so that will make it seven years.

PF: Tell me about your experience as one of the finalists for Mr SA. AE: There have been so many amazing experiences so far but if I had to choose, it would have to be the amazing woman, children and young adults I have had the pleasure of meeting either at charity events or inspirational speaking for my various charity organisations and at school project activations.

PF: Do you have a message for the youth?

AE: Even though you may not know your path straight away, as I did not know mine in high school, be patient and don’t become frustrated.

Your path is ahead of you.

It may be just in front of you and you don’t even know it. Be kind to one another and share in positive acts of kindness. You will bring together more positivity in communities and people who need your assistance.

HE Pinetown-Highway Child and Family Welfare Society (PHCFWS) was informally started in 1931 by a concerned group of women who felt that Pinetown needed a child welfare society.

In 1932 the society became affiliated with the National Council and from the beginning the community got involved not only by providing material support, but also child protection support. The organisation functioned only with the assistance of volunteers until 1969 when the society appointed the first professional social worker.

PHCFWS spokesperson Ellen Attwell said: “In 1975 the first director was appointed. The high rate of unemployment in the 1980s saw hundreds of families approaching the society for help and community development workers initiated income-generating projects to assist families.

The society now has a full team of social workers, development and ad-

ministrative staff who work with women, children and the youth. With the onset of HIV/Aids epidemic the society has actively taken on the challenge, despite the added pressure on already overburdened staff.

The society provides child protec-

tion services that initiates awareness about children’s rights and responsibilities through various programmes and holds life skills workshops in communities.

“Many people turn to the society for assistance and in the light of the present economic state of the country is in dire need of food who have no items such as groceries, canned products, sugar, flour, mealie-meal, rice, dried beans and lentils, peanut butter, jam, samp, tea bags, powdered milk etc. The society with the generous support of the community and business provides food parcels for those in dire need. The society is running short of food and we are pleading to the community to donate to the society.”

ITH year-end festivities and festivals just around the corner, many in KwaZulu-Natal wait in anticipation for the fireworks season.

However, while these spectacular displays will bring joy to thousands, at the same time they bring terror on wildlife.

As a result, Crow is appealing to residents to think twice before launching fireworks – taking into account the impact their action can have on domestic and wild animals.

Paul Hoyte, Crow director, said: “When it comes to domestic animals, people can easily stock up on Rescue or other vet-approved sedatives to assist their pets through this traumatic time. What we have got to realise is that our wildlife is exposed throughout this season.

“Over the years we have seen a spike in Crow admissions directly after an evening of fireworks, resulting in baby animals being unnecessarily orphaned – particularly common among nesting birds and small mammals, frightened animals that flee from the safety of their dens and/or nests in confusion created by the noise pollution of firework displays.”

For birds, panic can cause them to become disorientated, leading to them flying into trees and buildings, and on the ground animals are known to have fled onto roads, causing them to be hit by vehicles.

Following the displays some scavenging animals have also been known to ingest parts of the fireworks, usually resulting in death.

In order to try and limit the number of animals that are forced to endure fireworks, the Crow team is now asking people to not hold private firework displays.

event will have on wildlife.

“We ask that people rather focus on the light aspect of the displays and not

Dream comes true for young cancer sufferer Mohamed and ‘his dolphin’.

IT was a special day in the lives of the Netcare 911 paramedics in KZN when they recently received a call to assist a seven-year-old-boy to fulfill his dream on visiting uShaka Marine World.

Mohamed is terminally ill with cancer and the cancer Reach for a Dream with the help of sponsors brought him and his parents down to Durban to see the dolphins, but tragedy struck.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha on their arrival in Durban Mohamed's condition worsened as he had to be admitted to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital.

His father approached the hospital manager Mark Van Heerden and asked for help to fulfill his son’s dream.

"Consultation with Netcare 911, Umhlanga Hospital and uShaka Marine World took place and arrangements were made to take the little boy in an ambulance under the constant care of an Advanced Life Support paramedic to interact

with the dolphins.

“This was a very emotional event as stands full of people witnessed the boy being carried by medics to the side of the pool. The handler slowly brought the massive dolphin towards the child.

Tears ran from the faces of the most hardened paramedics.

“The boy was able to touch and feed the dolphin, and the expression on his face will be burnt into the hearts of all who witnessed this awesome event,” said Botha.

After the event paramedics drove the child back to the hospital where he rested for an hour.

“We then drove the family to King Shaka International where the Netcare jet landed with a crew of paramedics.

“The boy was stabilised for the flight and after he was strapped into a special stretcher they boarded the aircraft and flew to Port Elizabeth where he was admitted to a hospital near his home. - Supplied.

Cowies Hill singer ‘Tinana’ Nelisiwe Rose Sikhakhane.

OWIES Hill singer Tinana, real name Nelisiwe Rose Sikhakhane, was born in Maputo, Mozambique in October 1965.

She started singing at age of 10 as a leader of an isicathamiya group in Mozambique.

The group was inspired by her late father, a music composer.

Her family later relocated to South Africa where she continued singing and eventually started an umbhaqanga group and a gospel trio named The Crusaders at Montebello Roman Catholic School in Kwazulu-Natal.

In the year 1982 to 1983 she performed as a member of the school choir at Zwelibanzi High School in Umlazi.

In pursuit of a teaching career she enrolled at Eshowe Collage of Education in the eighties where she became a born-again Christian and started another Christian music group with fellow students.

As part of her studies she did theory of music and completed her qualifica-

tion in 1986, becoming a professional teacher.

"During my teaching year I found interest in motivational talks and develop aspiring singers, my colleagues.

“In 1991 I married Mandla Sikhakhane and we were blessed with three children, Zanoxolo, Simunye and the late Siyabonga."

Her inspiration in music and her relationship with God led her to starting a praise and worship team at the Independent Baptist Church in Esikhawini.

"In 2009 I went through a divorce and became a single mom. My children and extended family were very inspirational and supportive towards my dream of being a recording artist.”

“This dream was slowly being realised by my wanting to spread God's word through music. Just before the release of my first album, Umfanekiso Wakho, my family was struck by the death of my last born son Siyabonga in March 2015. I released and launched the album in October 2015. The success of my album took off and my first performance was in April when I represented South Africa at the Africa Day celebrations in Mozambique and later performed at an investors corporate event at the Mozambican embassy."

I n South Africa she has performed in many events including the Discovering Hidden Treasures at the Protea Edward Hotel in Durban.

She also performed in a corporate event at the Elangeni hotel in Durban.

"I continue to develop young talent as I walk in the light of my music career, growing both spiritually and as an aspiring artist."

Conjoined twins to receive high care

Foundation founder Gideon Cebekhulu’s passion to help needy communities has led him to look for alternative ways of raising funds.

“The Gideon Foundation has formed a partnership with Gidare Training Centre and offers beneficiaries technical and soft-skills training programmes, including fork lifting, health and safety, first aid, fire fighting, HIV/Aids and computer training.

“Gidare is accredited with Transport Education and Training Authority and has committed to donate to The Gideon Foundation once a year in order to receive an income tax relief Section 18A certificate to reduce their taxable income.

“The foundation is now registered as a public benefit organisation that works with Gidare in order to benefit from the BEE rating as well.”

Cebekhulu lived in Durban in 1988 after finishing his tertiary studies in Pietermaritzburg. He joined his friend, who worked at Everite in Congela, and friends who used to work for UKhozi

FM, who were managing an Ingoma Zulu dance group and others from around KwaZulu-Natal.

Cebekhulu fell in love with Ingoma growing up in a village in Pietermaritzburg.

From starting as a secretary when he was young, he studied and later became a judge at Ingoma competitions.

“Most competitions were held in Wema Hostel, Dalton, and at the railway in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

“I have started a similar Ingoma competition under The Gideon Foundation and will be hosting my first competition possibly on 17 December in Pinetown.

“So I am asking groups who specialise in three Ingoma genres, Isibhaca, Zulu and isiShiyamen to contact me. I know there are many groups and Ingoma differs from area to area, but I would like to group them together because the cost of entering the competition will be for three categories.

Groups must register in time so that we can change the venue should numbers exceed expectations.

“I am hoping that this initiative will benefit our organisation.”

KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has full confidence that the newly born conjoined twins from Zululand will receive the highest level of healthcare at Inkosi Albert Central Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH), where they are being treated.

The twin girls, who are conjoined at the chest and abdomen, were born at their home in Pongola on Saturday 8 Oc­ tober.

Their 31­year­old mother said she only attended ante­natal classes once, during the early stages of her pregnancy.

Dhlomo visited the girls in the neona­ tal intensive care unit of IALCH today, and spoke to the mother and chief pediatri­ cian, Dr Harshavadan Ratilal Mackanjee.

Dhlomo said: “Whatever the outcome these twins are going to have will be God’s will. Here at IALCH, they are going to be exposed to a multidisciplinary team of highly trained specialists, including neo­ natologists, orthopaedic surgeons, cardi­ ologists, gastroenterologists. This hospi­ tal is the best place because all of these specialists can be found under one roof.”

Dhlomo had been briefed by Dr Mack­ anjee that each twin was comfortable and breathing on their own and currently being fed intravenously.

He was also told that although there are certain vital organs the babies share ­ the liver ­ there are other critical organs ­ heart and lungs ­ they do not share, which makes their case a little less complicated.

“The doctors are still working on a plan in terms of what they want to do with the babies. They have indicated that they’ll allow the babies to grow to a certain age

­ about six months ­ which, according to their knowledge, will allow for a particular surgical intervention, if needed.” said Dlo­ mo.

Dhlomo said he is pleased that what­ ever decision the doctors take will include the family’s wishes.

“They’re not going to make any deci­ sion, good as they may be, without involv­ ing the family. The family component, cul­ turally, will be much of the planning.”

Dhlomo said if the hospital care was to be done privately, it would cost mil­ lions. This, he said, is why the National Health Insurance is so crucial.

“The costs that would be involved in the hospital care and other future plans would have amounted to what we call ‘catastrophic health expenditure’, which is exactly what NHI will deal with, as our national health minister, Dr Aaron Mot­ soaledi has been saying.

“The family would have barely managed, but now these babies are going to have an outcome that is not dependent on how much money their parents have in their pocket.”

He also hailed the Air Wing of the de­ partment’s emergency medical services for being on hand last Saturday, as they airlifted the twins from Itshelejuba Hospi­ tal to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospi­ tal.

Dhlomo wished the mother and her twins well and asked pregnant mothers o start ante­natal care as early as possi­ ble, in order for any abnormalities to be detected early, and to ensure optimal care of mothers and new­borns. ­ Supplied.

Puppet show highlights child abuse A STAGGERING 1 220 new child abuse cases were referred to Childline KZN from April 2015 to March 2016.

Unicef states that the early childhood years from birth to age eight are formative years in terms of intelligence, personality and social behaviour. While incidents of child sexual abuse in South Africa are rapidly on the rise, all efforts to curb more incidents are applauded in the formative years.

“An abused child’s story leaves one with chills down your spine and saving just one child from more harm is the ultimate aim. Children must be educated and empowered on how to recognise an adult with bad intentions by talking about the epidemic rather than pretending it doesn’t exist,” said a Just For Baby brand custodian.

An awareness and education programme by Just For Baby in partnership with Childline KZN started in October and will run at 30 identified crèches in Durban.

Childline KZN volunteers will facilitate puppet shows for the little ones to shine the spotlight on good feelings like kindness and love versus bad feelings like sadness and fear.

The puppet shows will bring to life two characters that the children can relate to, who engage in friendly dialogue about inappropriate touching.

Mr Good and Mr Bad will point out subtle themes to assist children, as young as they are, to protect themselves and to create awareness around this too often taboo subject of child sexual abuse.

“We at Childline KZN are excited to be partnering with the Just For Baby initiative as this increases our reach to abused children throughout KZN. “Marico South Africa - the owners of Just For Baby - is a company that shares the same vision as Childline, to increase social impact and make a difference, to empower by helping to make a difference thereby eradicating social ills,” said Adeshini Naicker from Childline’s crisis line and outreach department.

“The school environment, from a previous campaign held last year, enabled active engagement with the children.

This resulted in communication with the teachers, parents and broader community resulting in one disclosure of abuse from a child victim as a result of their feedback. After the shocking revelation the necessary support and counseling services were provided,” said a spokesperson for Just For Baby.

“The children are expected to engage actively with the puppets by answering questions.

All children will receive a Just For Baby goodie bag. The crèche itself will also receive Star and Birthday Charts, with crayons for each classroom.”

Based on the exceptionally positive and encouraging feedback received from the school, pupils and parents, Just For Baby is continuing this journey targeting younger more vulnerable children aged three to six.

HE Toyota Avanza has come a long way since its initial introduction as a comfortable and affordable multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that moved many people from one place to another. True to its name (Avanza is derived from an Italian word “avanzata”, which means advance), the Avanza has – over the years – evolved into a more sophisticated MPV that boasts a lot passenger-like qualities.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) is proud to announce the addition of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) – including Brake Assist System and Traction Control – as a standard safety fea-
