MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

Correction and apology A REPORT “Mystery man’s development plans” (South Coast Fever, 20 October, pages 1 and 4),

incorrectly stated that this “mystery man”, one Ian, bought a property on Golf Road and was planning to develop it while it was the property of Transnet. The report also incorrectly stated that he intended “utilising a section of the property that is actually riparian land”. It has come to our notice that the owner of this property, erf

1088, is Mr Ian Aveyard, a resident of the South Coast since 1981, and that he has legally bought the land adjacent to Transnet’s erf, 1014, and lot 1027, which is riparian land. HE South Coast Fever has received a number of calls and letters regarding the traffic light at the Abingdon Road and main South Coast road intersection in Umtentweni.

Readers say the traffic light on Abingdon Road only remains green for a few seconds and allows a few motorists to either drive across into Commercial Road or turn onto the main road. This, it has been said, creates traffic congestion at peak hours as vehicles queue in Abingdon Road.

When the Fever timed the traffic light, it stayed green for only six seconds, only allowing about four cars to go through at a time.

“It would be great if this traffic light could be set to stay green for longer. At the moment, it only remains green for seven or eight seconds,” said D. Schulenburg who raised the matter again this week.

“That is not enough time and this traffic light needs to be reset. We need at least 30 seconds,” he added.

Spokesperson for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Simon April, said the traffic light will be monitored.

“Our electricity section will monitor the timing on the traffic light and attend to it accordingly, if there is a need,” he said.

Computer scam resurfaces

F you receive a call from a computer company telling you that someone has hacked into your emails, be wary.

Colleen Hamilton said she received a call on Tuesday from a woman with a foreign accent.

“I recognised the accent because this is not the first time I received a call like this,” she said.

The woman on the phone explained that the company’s technicians detected that someone had attempted to hack into Hamilton’s email and that she called to help rectify the problem.

“I simply replied yes, I am aware of the hacker. I’m actually speaking to one now.”

She then slammed the phone down.

Hamilton, who lives in Umtentwe-

ni, posted a warning on two Facebook groups, Tweni Crime Watch and Hibiscus Coast Crime Watch.

“It seems I am not the only one in Umtentweni who has received these calls.”

A year ago, a man with a foreign accent, claiming to be from Microsoft, called Hamilton and told her there were viruses on her computer.

Man caught with stolen items POLICE confiscated two flat screen televisions and a decoder from a man at Port Shepstone taxi rank on Friday.

Warrant Officer Johan Zandberg, Warrant Officer Patrick Gosling and Constable Ngcobo from Port Shepstone SAPS were on duty in the CBD when they made the arrest.

“They went to one of the structures and found a 20-year-old suspect with the items, which he had hidden,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

The man was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.

On Thursday night, two houses were broken into in Mbango Valley in Kent Road.

“We are investigating the possibility that the suspect was involved in these house breakings. He is facing a charge of possession of suspected stolen property and possible charge of house breaking,” added Wiid.

Man receives life for raping young niece A 23-YEAR-OLD man was recently convicted of rape and sentenced to life for the rape of his five-year-old niece.

The girl was left with her maternal uncle at their home in Ezimangweni Ward, Louisiana in Port Shepstone on 7 March.

When the child’s mother arrived back home at 11.25am she noticed her brother’s trouser zip was undone and her little girl’s underwear was pulled down.

“Suspecting that something was amiss, she took the child to hospital where it was confirmed the child had been raped,” said police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The victim’s uncle was arrested and stood trial. The matter was escalated from the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court to the Port Shepstone Regional Court where he was convicted of rape and sentenced to life.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“The majority of sexual offences on children are committed by persons known to them. We welcome the sentence imposed by the court and hope it serves as a deterrent to other like-minded criminals.

HE Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) placed an advert last week in a local paper calling for comments on the proposed development of a church in Phillip Street Margate, Extension 3.

However, construction to this building began in 2015 and was stopped at the beginning of the year.

Two weeks ago, the Fever carried a story on the same construction (“Resi-

dent questions church building site plans”, 20 October) and requested comment from RNM spokesperson, Simon April. None was forthcoming.

According to information received from a Ward 6, Margate Extension 3 committee member, an advert was placed in the papers calling for comments on the development of a church in Christopher Road in 2014.

However, the church is being built in Phillip Road and nobody objected because the advert said the development would be in Christopher Road.

“After investigating, I established that the address given in the 2014 advert was not even vacant. It already had a house on it,” said the Ward 6 member.

“I was baffled when I saw an advert in the paper calling for comments on the same church, this time with the correct address, but the church is al-

The resident then e-mailed the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s town planning section, hoping to get clarity, but did not receive any feedback.

“Residents of Jellicoe, Drake, Phillip and Evans roads would definitely object to this as there is only a dirt road that leads to the church.

“This will make it very difficult for church-goers to access, especially in rainy weather.”

The Fever once again e-mailed April, who commented that the municipality realised the error in the advert and stopped the building process.

“The municipality has started the town planning approval process again,” he said.

“The building did not comply with the parking requirements as was stipulated in the approval. An amended building plan has been requested from

the applicant.”

He said the bulk of the objections that the municipality received were on the basis of the condition that the access road is in.

“The municipality thus plans to upgrade that road in order to ease everyone’s concern,” said April.

He said the error in the address occurred when the applicant submitted forms with his personal physical address instead of the application site.

“This is essentially what caused the confusion. The town planner dealing with the application then made the error of not double checking,” he added.

April said the discrepancy came to light after a site inspection.

Senene worked as a CANSA community mobiliser for almost two years, but the time for her to reach new heights had come and her last day at CANSA was on Sunday.

Senene said her departure is sad, but bigger opportunities have come along.

She said working for CANSA was wonderful opportunity.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for me to grow career wise and on a personal level. I learnt a lot and it taught me how to work with people in need

Senene will be taking a break before embarking on her new journey.

Kara Nobel from the CANSA head office said it is sad that Senene is leaving, saying the relationship that Sene had with them and her patients will never be forgot-

A NUMBER of workers were “recognised” and rewarded by Ugu District Municipality at a recent council meeting at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Council Chambers.

The employees received certificates for improving their skills in the field of electrical engineering.

New councillor meets with youth OMEGA MOAGI

OUTH from around Margate met for a first-of-its-kind gathering in their community with the recently elected Ray Nkonyeni Municipality councillor, Lwazi Gcanca on Friday. Held at Margate Museum, the aim of the gathering was for the councillor and the youth to discuss issues pertaining to them and their community.

The main topics included the lack of platforms and opportunities for sports, arts and recreation for the Margate youth, economic development, crime and community policing, government communication and access to information.

According to the youth in attendance, there is currently no aid from government for youth expression, be it through the arts, sports or economic development. Some said they felt there was no organised platform where the youth could go to get assistance.

“I have been an artist in Margate for years, but I’ve found that there’s no progress because there is nowhere to go where I can find assistance. As a result of that I have decided to move to Pretoria,” said local musician Siyamcela “Blizzard” Mnqobe.

Gcanca agreed that the concerns voiced affect the youth, however, he emphasised that the onus was on the youth themselves to stand up and fight for change to come about.

“Nothing is going to come to you unless you fight for it,” said Gcanca. He encouraged them to get organised and pledged to assist wherever he could in terms of offering guidance as well as mediating between them and relevant stakeholders.

Church to host ‘revival’ at Masaythini BHOBHOYI Church Believers Home Fellowship Centre invites the community to join them for a revival at Masaythini location next to Merlewood High from 16 to 20 December.

The revival will be hosted by Pastor Sifiso Ngwabe and Prophet Sdah Ngwabe.

The theme of the revival is “supernatural encounter” intended to present supernatural interventions of God in addressing social ills as well as sicknesses and demonic activities affecting God’s people.

“We invite people to attend these prayer services, which the church will be holding,” said Pastor Ngwabe.

Guests pastors from Durban will be ministering at the event.

Shoppers win vouchers

HE Margate Art Museum was filled with art lovers who came to view paintings by Madeline Antrobus of the South Coast.

Antrobus’s work stirred much reaction as art lovers said how the paintings spoke to them and displayed a breath of fresh air.

“They’re all colourful even the black and white ones jump out their canvas and lift your spirit,” said one guest.

Antrobus said through her paintings she sends a message from the universe.

“You always have to be positive, the universe does not understand negativity because it just throws it back in your face.”

As part of the entertainment, Antrobus’s 37-year-old daughter Lizelle Bothma sang and told how strict her mother was when she was growing up.

Guests enjoyed the stories Antrobus shared about her late husband, Rooi Antrobus, a well known South Coast deejay, saying how much of an inspiration he was to her and her children.

Antrobus says it is her belief in God that got her through the tough time she went through when she lost Rooi.

“You just give it to God and he’ll sort it out.”

The guest were relaxed and very interested in the art as they browsed through the exhibition with wine and snacks.

SAVERITE Port Shepstone held a draw on Tuesday where two lucky shoppers won a R2 000 shopping voucher each.

IROSE Enterprise (DE) recently celebrated its 10th birthday.

Celebrations were held at Andrah Hall in Marburg, where staff, management and family gathered for a day full of excitement and awards, from the owners to the staff for having served them in the 10 years.

Rajen “Baba” Naicker of DE said the factory was established in September 2006 with only 12 employees, and there are still staff with them who started then.

Managing director Saroj Reddy said the aim of the celebrations was to thank the staff for the hard work and effort they contributed to the

company.

Reddy thanked everyone for not giving up, but for continuing to work hard.

“We are here to celebrate 10 years, however, we would have not survived the 10 years if it was not for you, the staff. Your contribution and dedication really means a lot, therefore today we are celebrating you, new or old,” said Reddy.

A total of 10 employees were given long service cheques of R1 000 each, which management committed to awarding the staff annually.

The factory also received a certificate from Nedbank congratulating them on the 10 years.

SAPS women cook to raise funds WOMEN from the various police stations and units within the Ugu Cluster gathered at The Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Home to participate in a cooking competition last Wednesday.

The competition was hosted by the Ugu Cluster Women’s Network to raise funds for charity while giving SAPS women an opportunity to showcase their creativity and culinary skills.

“It was a fun experience for everyone and proved to be an excellent team-building exercise in a relaxed atmosphere,” said police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The network’s champion, Lieutenant-Colonel Theresa Pillay, co-ordinated the event.

The venue was a hive of activity and the air was filled with the aroma of a multitude of dishes including an array

of traditional Indian, Afrikaans, English and African dishes including usu (ox tripe), potjiekos, dombolo (dumplings), stir frys, roti, bhajia (chilli bites), uJeqe (steamed bread) and poultry.

The judges were The Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Home administrator, Charmaine Barnwell and captains Pandarum and Petros Mpinge.

Port Shepstone SAPS was placed first, with Umzinto coming in second and Msinsini in third position.

Captain Heidi Slabbert won the prize for the woman with the best outfit.

By the time judging was complete, everybody had worked up a healthy appetite and enjoyed the various dishes.

University offers advanced teaching programme ­ online programme via a 100% online format, so no travel or contact sessions are required. There are no formal exams student progress is measured through online assessments based on demonstrating practical application in the classroom.

Professor Daniella Coetzee-Manning from the UFS South Campus said: “In order to qualify to enroll for the Advanced Certificates in Teaching, there are some pre-requisites.

“Firstly, prospective students have to be currently employed as a teacher and/or have access to a classroom, as practical assignments form part of the programme. The programme is for teachers who are already qualified, with any of the following qualifications - a three-year education teaching diploma, NPDE [National Professional Diploma in Education], degree in education, any degree plus a PGCE [postgraduate certificate in education].”

Applied competencies to meet National Qualifications Framework Level six are organised into nine to 10 consecutive eight-week sessions. These are designed to meet the professional needs of in-service teachers, and academic tutoring as well as technological support is included.

Students can enroll in, and pay for one session at a time.

Municipality receives clean administration award

FRANCE ZAMA SENIOR MANAGER MAYORALTY AND COMMUNICATION UGU District Municipality received recognition for good governance at the recent Clean Administration Awards, presented to the municipality by the Chartered Institute of Governance Finance Audit and Risk Officers.

The award is in recognition of the work done by the municipality in improving its audit outcome for the 2014/15 compared to 2013/14 financial

year when the municipality received a qualified audit opinion.

The municipality has implemented various turnaround strategies to address the previous year’s findings that had immense impact on improving the 2014/15 year’s audit outcome.

Our finances today are in a better shape than they were yesterday. We have built a solid foundation of financial sustainability. We have worked hard to increase our investments in infrastructure aimed at improving the quality of life of our communities and the quality of our services.

It is a well-deserved accolade not only for the political leadership and the senior management, but for each municipality employee who con-

Meeting the millennials TOWARDS the end of this year we will be conducting the review of our tourism strategy and mapping a new promotional way forward for the next five years.

At a conference last week there was much discussion regarding the future market being those who were born post 2000 and those now in their early twenties- in essence our main and future markets.

In a new era nutshell, the indications are that these segments are addicted to the new social communication platforms with some 75% posting messages, photos and comment at least once a day. They are materialistic, like to be seen at the must go to events, have high standards of dress and precise expectations as to where they stay, eat and socialise. They also follow all sorts of people on Facebook, Twitter and the likes.

As we know our population pyramid is heavily weighted towards those younger than 30 and so tourism planning has to be considerate of the profiles, needs and interests of this massive emerging market.

After all, the young translate into new family units with their own set of expectations for their holidays. It is thus important that we capture the interest of the younger set to come and be forever smitten by our wonderful destination.

In short I believe that our main urban areas such as Scottburgh and Margate should look at the provision of trendy eating and entertainment spots and events should be geared towards entertainment by artists who have a massive following. We want the young responders.

Just last weekend the Orlando Stadium was full during a concert featuring a few of the country’s top contemporary artists. Social media went viral with the concept #FillUpOrlando Stadium and they did. The power of social communication prevailed.

The reach of new communications in the new markets is incredible. Some tourism bloggers for example have over 400 000 followers, hence the concept of influencer publicity and tourism marketing is responding to it.

At the recent SETE conference, it was made clear that tourism destinations must involve the social communities. If we could make our destination “trendy” for interest groups and their role as communicative ambassadors on the web, I feel the millennials and those a little older will become our new captive market.

The importance of the grey beards like me is still evident, but the future lies in those different in their lifestyle choices and their pace of doing things. So exotic cocktails may well replace Klippies. Who cares if the rands keep pouring in, our tourism economy scores.

It is amazing how our officials feel proud once they hear that one youth member made it far, be it in a competition or an industry, and it is all over the news.

I feel the powers that be fail to meet the needs of the youth especially in the arts and culture aspect of youth development.

They focus more on giving bursaries to those who perform well in school and they forget that people are gifted in many other ways - some have the brain and others are just talented.

On the South Coast we have our Miss Tourism Universe, we have writers, filmmakers, artists, producers, script writers, musicians, you name it, but when you compare the level of attention they get from youth structures and those who perform well academically, the ratio is ridiculous.

It appears as though talented people are only recognised after struggling their way up in the arts and culture ladder.

I recently wrote a story about a young guy who appeared on our TV screens. Until then he was hardly known by local leaders, but now he is the talk of the town.

When he started his acting career he had to hustle hard, starting at a local NGO, which I also believe does not receive any funding from the municipality.

He received training from his high-school teacher all the way up until he made it to the big time.

Why is it that the arts industry is not popular when there are many underground artists who seek a platform for them to blossom and showcase their talent on?

I think the reason why many of our talented youth turn to drugs and criminal activities is that when they knock on doors for opportunities they are turned away because there is no budget in our municipalities for them to be developed.

Many successful ones work so hard, trying to get educated and acquire skills development in art institutions funded by their grandparents’ grant because many come from bad backgrounds.

Once they have made it they do not only represent their family, they also represent the local municipality, the district and the province.

We must not forget that a few years back that same person was in a youth office seeking assistance and they were turned away.

My point is that youth structures should go into communities to see who is hiding on streets corners, who knows, maybe the next big national star will emerge from there.

Dog on the Couch

HI Susan, I have been told not to comfort my dog when she is afraid of loud noises such as fireworks, thunder,

etc. I have been told that her fear will increase and that I should just ignore her during these times. I find this a callous response to a terrified animal.

Is it right or wrong to comfort her by holding, stroking and talking in a soothing way?

Gerda As in many circumstances the answer is not black and white. Individual personalities of both pet and owner are to be considered. I wouldn’t advise ignoring the dog, nor would I advise that an overconcerned indulgence be shown in the face of such behaviour.

The dog may mistake overconcern as confirmation that her perceived fears are justified. Ignoring the behaviour is unkind and also confusing to the pet, which may think you are unaware of the perceived threat.

Acknowledging the occurrence and then showing support and a calm response will indicate you are aware of the problem but are not concerned. Panic can escalate if we

see it mirrored in another. This will compound the fear response as we think “she is also worried”.

If you were swimming with a friend in her pool and a water-borne creature, resembling a cross between a squid and a snake suddenly came gurgling to life, you would very likely react fearfully, but your subsequent behaviour would be influenced by the reaction of your friend.

If your friend took fright, or acted in a concerned way, you’d both be out of the water in a flash. But if your friend responded in a calm and nonchalant manner you would assume she doesn’t consider the pool cleaning device a threat.

During such times ask yourself how you would feel being either completely ignored, or smothered by hugging, stroking and soothing noises. A gentle combination would be the better option. In many such cases the middle way is often the best way.

Potholes, potholes and more potholes THERE is an outcry from many residents about the poor state of many roads from Hibberdene to Port Edward. Potholes everywhere. Ward councillors and residents have been reporting them since the beginning of the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s new financial year, starting in July with very little reaction from the officials side.

The problem is that the municipality has been struggling with the appointment of contractors to fix the potholes. They only relied on internal teams for maintenance and they are obviously fighting a losing battle.

For example, the depot three road maintenance supervisor, Veronica Gunkel, is responsible for the area from St Mike’s bridge to Trafalgar and with only two teams of five workers each, so it is no wonder we find ourselves in this position.

In consultation with the responsible head of department, Sabatha Dlamini, I established that the contractors issue has been resolved and

This situation, which was allowed to develop, is totally unacceptable and rest assured, to prevent this from happening in future, the DA will hold the ruling party to account, including the accounting officer, Max Mbili.

It is also mind-blowing that there was no communication whatsoever from the municipality in this regard.

THE fast-food name for the hot dog will always remain “hot dog”. When I was still in nappies the hot dog was already on the market and being enjoyed by millions around the world.

This world of ours is already overpopulated by one million

new souls every four days and is saturated by about 500 000 stupid religions.

Along comes a certain religious group that want the name “hot dog” removed because it infringes upon their religious principles - what a load

of horse koekerachis.

All I can say to these people is, get a life, get off your backsides and do something constructive.

Bekookte getuienis?

DIE getuienis van ‘n ooggetuie in die hof is dikwels van deurslaggewende belang. Die persoon het die insident wat plaasgevind het eerstehands ervaar. Deesdae word daar egter ook van die sogenaamde “post-event misinformation effect” gepraat.

Dit verwys na die invloed wat gebeure na die tyd op die getuie se weergawe van die insident kon gehad het, soos die media en ander eksterne invloede. Dikwels kan die getuie se weergawe van die insident ook verwring word deurdat hy of sy slegs ‘n gedeelte van die gebeure gesien het.

Natuurlik is daar ook die aspek van bekookte getuienis wat in berekening gebring moet word. Vermoedelik is dit hoekom die Here in Sy wysheid vier getuies in die Bybel

gebruik, om ons te vertel van die lewe en sterwe van Jesus Christus, die enigste Verlosser van die wêreld. Hierdie vier getuies is die vier evangeliste, Matteus, Markus, Lukas en Johannes.

Die vier evangeliste (draers van die goeie nuus) deel met ons onder leiding van die Heilige Gees, elk hul unieke weergawe van die Christusgebeure.

Matteus vertel vir die Jode van Jesus. Daarom begin sy geslagsregister by Abraham. Lukas begin sy geslagsregister by Adam, want hy skryf sy evangelie aan ‘n Griek.

Markus skryf sy evangelie aan die mense in Rome. Vir hulle vertel hy van die geheim wat tussen mense ingekom het.

Johannes skryf vir mense wat op ‘n dwaalspoor beland het, en dat die wêreld deur die Woord van God ontstaan het.

Soos Ferdinand Deist dit stel: “Ons is maar net getuies-elkeen met sy of haar eie verhaal oor die Man van Nasaret, soos Matteus en Markus en Lukas en Johannes elk sy eie verhaal oor die Man van Nasaret vertel het.

“Die evangelie is nie iets wat ons onthou nie. Die evangelie (goeie nuus) is dat die Man van Nasaret weer mense by God uitbring. Die evangelie is dat die geheim van die weg na God en die Waarheid oor God en die Lewe in God in die Man van Nasaret allemanskennis geword het.”

Dit is nie bekookte getuienis nie.

Jy kan dit maar glo.

Heuning­ en hommelbye – sterf hulle uit?

S ‘n liefbebber van heuning het die uwe oor die afgelope paar jaar kennis geneem van die wêreldwye kommer oor die toekoms van bye.

In internasionale tydskrifte en op televisienetwerke was daar gereeld berigte oor hoe bye in Amerika en elders vrek, maar nooit het die werklikheid deurgedring dat dieselfde blykbaar geruime tyd reeds hier in Suid-Afrika gebeur nie. ‘n Plaaslike koerant het onlangs daarna verwys, en ‘n gesprek met ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse byeboer het my so bietjie navorsing oor die saak laat doen.

My eerste indruk is dat dit ‘n saak met vele fasette is, met verskillende, soms uiteenlopende, menings op verskillende plekke en deur deskundiges.

Albert Einstein het blykbaar gesê indien die by van die aarde af verdwyn, sal die mens net sowat vier jaar lewe.

CNN het onlangs inligting gepubliseer dat Amerikaanse heuningby-kolonies teen ‘n onstellende tempo vrek. Sedert 2007 het alle bye-kolonies elke winter in Amerika met 30% gekrimp.

Wilde- oftewel hommelbye se toekoms is ook in gevaar. CNN wys daarop dat heuning- en hommelbye die belangrikste bestuiwers van vrugte en groente is.

Van die 100 plantsoorte wat 90% van die wêreld se voedselvoorraad uitmaak, word 71% deur bye bestuif. Bye besoek blomme omdat hulle moet eet.

Die bye kry al die proteïne wat hul benodig uit blom-stuifmeel, en al die koolhidrate uit blomme-nektar. Soos hulle van blom tot blom vlieg, pak stuifmeel

op hul harige lywe saam, en die bestuiwingsproses gebeur outomaties.

Van die grootste vyande van heuning- en hommelbye in Amerika is insekdoders. Vyftig jaar gelede het bye gesonde lewens gelei omdat daar oorgenoeg blomme was om van te lewe, en geen insekdoders nie. Deesdae is daar oral insekdoders op plante. Daar is ook ander redes vir die vrektes soos krimpende habitatte, virusse, swak voedingswaarde in plante, genetiese redes en selfs selfoon-torings.

Hier in Suid-Afrika is die kommer ewe groot. ‘n Onlangse artikel in die Mail and Guardian lui dat ‘n siekte besig is om hele kolonies bye en -korwe in sleutelgebiede in Suid-Afrika uit te wis.

Mike Allsopp van die Landboukundige Navorsingsraad sê “ons is iewers tussen ‘n krisis en ‘n katastrofe”.

Hy waarsku reeds die afgelope 20 jaar teen die verdwyning van die Afrikaby, en pleit dat die owerheid meer aandag aan die probleem gee. Niemand het

Verlede week se woordewisseling het ontstaan toe ‘n besoeker uit Pretoria, kom ons noem hom Oom Paul, opmerkings begin maak het oor die swart vrou wat die rugby­ paneelbespreking gelei het.

Oom Paul was bitter ongelukkig omdat sy die “token Black” is om blankes verder kwaad te maak, “besef hulle dan nie dat rugby ‘n spel vir blanke mans is nie? Die Springbokke speel so vrot omdat daar gans te veel swartes in

die span is.”

Oom Paul is gou gesteun deur twee vroue, ook van iewers in die binneland. Ek was ver­ stom, want mtns insiens was dit ‘n ongeldige argement, en boonop was die vroue­aanbie­ der eintlik baie professioneel.

Toe ek dit durf sê is ek onmiddellik ge­ brandmerk as ‘n “verraaier van die blankes en die Afrikaner, en iemand wat sy nasietrots verloor het”.

Van hier af was dit ‘n stryd om die vrede te bewaar, want van die mense wat met my saam gestem het, het die drie begin aanvat en kort voor lank het harde woorde geval.

Gelukkig het ek met Oom Pottie se hulp daarin geslaag om gemoedere te kalmeer.

Oom Paul en die twee vroue het later geloop, maar nie voordat Oom Paul my goed aanges­ preek en verseker het dat ek geen beginsels het nie.

“As jy wil hê jou oë moet oopgaan, gaan kyk bietjie hierna.” Hy gee my ‘n besigheid­ skaartjie met sy Facebook­adres, draai om en loop by die deur uit.

Ek het onmiddellik gaan kyk wat op sy Fa­ cebook­blad aangaan, en was verstom. Ek

tot dusver geluister nie omdat die byebevolking in Suid-Afrika nog altyd alle siektes van buite af oorleef het. Omdat die Afrikaby geharder is as enige ander by-spesie, het Suid-Afrikaanse byeboere oorgerus geword en min beplanning is vir die uitbreek van siektes gedoen.

Op die oomblik is die groot probleem ‘n bakterie wat die Amerikaanse “foulbrood disease” (ek kon nie ‘n Afrikaanse naam daarvoor opspoor nie) veroorsaak, en wat verlede jaar 40% van die bye in Wes-Kaapland laat vrek het.

Die bakterie word deur larwes in bykolonies ingeneem. Die bakterie groei en die bye vrek. Ander bye word besmet en versprei sodoende die bakterie.

In Amerika behandel byeboere besmette kolonies met anti-bakteriële middels. Dit hou die bye produktief, en verhoed die onmiddellike uitbreek van “foulbrood”.

In Suid-Afrika is daar egter meningsverskil. Volgens die artikel in die Mail and Guardian wil sommige byeboere nie anti-biotika gebruik nie as gevolg van die inherente gevare daarvan, terwyl baie ten gunste daarvan is om hul verpligtinge na te kom. ‘n Byeboer van Wes-Kaapland, Brendan Ashley-Cooper, se oplossing is om bye wat die simptome toon, onmiddellik dood te maak. Hy het sodoende sy verliese tot een persent beperk.

Hoe dit ookal sy, hierdie probleem gaan nog lank met ons wees, en sowel byeboere as wetenskaplikes is hard aan die werk om oplossings te probeer kry.

In ‘n wêreld sonder heuning sal die mens nog kan oorleef, maar nie in ‘n wêreld sonder bye nie.

het geweet daar is nog mense met regse en konserwatiewe menings in die land, maar dis asof jy ‘n surrealistiese era betree van blanke baasskap, ‘n gehunker terug na dr. Verwoerd en die Ossewatrek van 1938.

Die ergste van alles is, daar is talle ander mense wat dieselfde galbraak­menings op sy blad lug, en wat mekaar warm broei oor “hoe die blanke verguis word”.

Op my Facebook­reis het ek ook afgekom op ene Sunette Bridges en Praag se “mure”.

Goeie genade. Die hemel help ons vorentoe.

Genoeg van die swartgalligheid. Boetie Swanevelder van Johannesburg vertel van die stokou­oom met sy kierie by die bushalte.

Tok­tok­tok­tok kap kierie, tot die ergenis van Koos, sy vrou en agt kinders wat net voor die omie in die tou staan. Die bus kom, en daar is net plek vir Koos en sy kroos.

Net voor die bus wegtrek, sê Koos: “Oom, sit asseblief ‘n stukkie rubber oor die punt van jou kierie. Jy irriteer almal.”

Blitsvinnig antwoord die Oom, toe die bus van hom af weg begin beweeg.

S part of the South Coast Fever’s 19th birthday celebrations, staff chose to spend their day at Give a Child a Family in Margate.

Staff took this opportunity as a community service initiative to give back by doing something special for children with no families.

He is a hands-on person, who knows his way around almost all power tools and workshop machinery. He started his career as a technician as a teenager working through his apprenticeship and completing his studies in 2009 qualifying as an electrical technician.

He completed training through Matus, Matabo, Makita and continues to keep abreast of the industry standards and news.

After suffered a major injury on duty in 2014 where his left hand was severely injured, he was forced to spend many months out of action, focusing on rehabilitation. Despite this, he has never lost his zest for life

or given up, simply teaching himself to cope using the other hand. He continues to strive for only the best, quality workmanship in everything he does and takes pride in his work, delivering only outstanding results.

With a vast pool of knowledge to tap into, Lawrence is happy to offer his time, services and skills with his perpetual good grace and smile.

The theme of the launch is “Pastel Glam Queens”, where the ladies will be welcomed by a “bubblegum carpet”, which signifies upliftment, calmness of the mind, a sense of spirituality and encourages creativity.

“The programme invites women from all over KZN, from all spheres of life wanting to be uplifted, in business, beauty and fashion.”

Speakers will talk on how women can strengthen each other, give each other a platform from which to shine, and start new concepts.

“We will have a number of speakers from various sectors - ministry, politics, business and more. The general manager of Ugu Community Services, Vuyi Tsako, will speak on leadership, Fikile Masiko on education, Dr Nomsa Buso on health, Mam Nomcebo Msimang on ministry and I will talk about elegance, etiquette and looking beautiful inside and out as women,” said Cele.

The women will also be given fashion tips when seven designers showcase garments for different occasions.

XCITEMENT took over last Thursday and Friday morning, when Harbourview Super Spar gave away sweets and chips to Lilliput Play School and Suid-Natal Primêre Skool pupils who participated in the trolley dash drawing competition as part of the store’s 10th birthday celebration. Lilliput Play pupils assisted Mandisa Zondi, the winner, collect items for their class party.

More parking at mall for elderly and disabled PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com MANY able drivers fail to obey the rule of not parking in disabled parking bays at malls.

Hibiscus Mall in Margate is used by many frail and elderly people, who make use of disabled parking, so mall management decided to add additional disabled parking bays to accommodate them.

“At Hibiscus Mall we value all our customers so when we noticed we have quite a few disabled, frail and elderly people using our shopping centre, we thought it would be great to assist them and make their shopping experience here more comfortable by adding more parking space for them,” said mall manager Alice Brandsma.

Originally the mall had seven disabled parking areas, now five have been added.

“These parkings are strategically positioned near the entrances,” she said.

Brandsma said some customers have complained about this, however, she feels by adding an extra five they can further accommodate the community’s needs.

“We have had a few complaints that able bodied people try to park in these bays, but the car guards and security do their best to ensure that only disa-

“We all know someone who is disabled, elderly or frail, so the mall would like to respect their rights and make it as easy as possible for them to shop with us. We hope that other customers feel the same way and abide by the rules of our parking area,” said Brandsma.

HE brand is turning the most intelligent executive sedan into the most powerful E-Class of all time in the shape of the next generation of the E 63 4Matic+ and E 63 S 4MATIC+.

Mercedes-AMG is also setting new benchmarks in this market segment with its innovative technologies. The intelligent drive strategy raises the limits of the performance sedan’s vehicle dynamics to a completely new level. Delivering superior acceleration, the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine generates up to 450 kW. This makes it the most powerful engine to have ever been installed in an E-Class. At the same time it is even more efficient thanks to a cylinder deactivation system fitted as standard, and thus sets the benchmark in its segment. With acceleration of 3.4 seconds from 0 – 100 km/h the new business limousine is at the top of its class.

The AMG speed shift MCT (multiclutch technology) nine-speed sports transmission is combined with a wet start-off clutch for the first time. This enabled more agile response times to be achieved. Another highlight is the new AMG Performance 4Matic+ allwheel drive system.

It combines the advantages of various drive configurations. Torque distribution on the front and rear axles, which until now was strongly rear-biased, is fully variable for the first time.

This ensures optimum traction right up to the physical limit, whatever the road conditions. The expressive exterior design, featuring a new radiator grille and coupé-style inset bonnet, underlines the performance figures.

The next generation of the E 63 thus offers a completely new level of sportiness and comfort on long journeys.

The latest generation of the E 63 4Matic+ and the E 63 S 4Matic+ sees Mercedes-AMG introducing a number of new developments that redefine the performance sedan. Innovative powertrain engineering and maximum performance are combined with distinctive design, exclusive equipment and the latest infotainment features for comprehensive, connected multimedia applications.

“The new E 63 models represent the biggest step forward we’ve ever taken from one generation to the next.

Vehicle dynamics were especially important to us.

At the start of the development process, we opted for a fully variable

all-wheel drive system which, when combined with the advanced performance of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, reaffirms our brand’s ‘Driving performance”’ claim,” says Tobias Moers, chairman of the board of management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Every detail of the exterior and interior is designed to enable AMG Driving Performance to be experienced at first hand. The expressive exterior design is all about sinuous edges and defined muscles.

With a completely distinctive design forward of the A-pillar, the sporty front also demonstrates the effort that Mercedes-AMG has put into the styling: for the first time on an AMG sedan, the bonnet is inset between the wings and bumper like on a coupé, thus exhibiting an entirely new, more dynamic approach to the sculpting.

The versatile AMG 4.0-litre twinturbo V8 engine in the E 63 S 4Matic+ takes peak performance to a new level at 450 kW. Maximum torque attains a new best value of 850 Nm. It is available over a broad engine speed range of 2500 to 4500 rpm and so provides a feeling of effortless superiority in every accelerator pedal posi-

tion. A sprint from zero to 100 km/h is absolved in 3.4 seconds, and this dynamic acceleration only ends at the governed top speed of 250 km/h (with AMG Driver’s package: 300 km/h). The E 63 4Matic+ is rated at 420 kW and has 750 Nm of torque. This variant accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.

The advanced AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine utilises well-proven twin turbocharging, with the two chargers not located outside on the cylinder banks, but rather between them in the V of the cylinders. The advantages of the “hot inner V” are a compact engine design, an immediate response from the twin-scroll turbochargers and low exhaust gas emissions thanks to optimum air flow for the close-coupled catalytic converters.

The interior reinforces the consistently dynamic bias with numerous specially designed details. Ideal for a sporty driving style, the performance sports steering wheel in black leather features a flattened bottom section, Touch Control and electroplated shift paddles, as well as a steering wheel bezel with the AMG logo.

OUTH Coast drag racing track Dezzi Raceway is to host a 60foot drag racing event organised

by KZN Drag Racing and Gas Magazine on 6 November.

This will a first for the track and

The event provides the optimal surface for serious competitors to attempt eight- and nine-second passes, or to break the infamous 10-second

barrier.

Darren Lewis of JZN Drag Racing said usually they have track bite in the burn-out area.

This is the first time that 60ft will be covered.

“We believe it has never been done before in KZN,” said Lewis.

Organisers promise a racing field that includes new models racing against modified older cars.

“You’ll see cars like an E36 M3 powered by a 1000 horsepower Toyota 2JZE, race against 800 hp Skyline GTR. It will be thrilling,” said Prethiven Naidoo, of Gas Magazine.

The event has also attracted requests from across the country to race South Africa’s record-breaking vehicles at the event.

“Rob Green Motorsport will be bringing their VW Golf 7R that amassed a 11-second flat run in Johannesburg. They’re hoping the track bite and sea level will help them break the 10-second barrier,” said Naidoo.

This is KZN Drag Racing and Gas Magazine’s fifth drag racing event at Dezzi since the drag strip was completed in June.

The fastest time recorded at Dezzi South Coast Raceway was an eightsecond pass by a purpose-built rail car.

The fastest time recorded for a roadworthy vehicle was 9.1 seconds by NXgen.

Both records were set racing without any track preparation.

The event in November is sure to impress fanatics and those new to the sport.

“Seeing cars drive that fast across 400m is certainly something to tick on the bucket list,” said Lewis.

SOUTH Africa has more on-road crashes involving cyclists than countries with a higher car-to-cyclist ratio.

Irrespective of what the reasons behind the crashes are, drivers share at least 50% responsibility in preventing collisions with a cyclist.

The managing director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, said cyclists are more vulnerable, which often results in drivers paying them less regard.

“Speed is a major factor in creating this vulnerability. Collisions which exceed 45 km per hour give cyclists a less than 50% chance of survival. Even if cyclists are hit at slower speeds, they face severe injuries. Always look out for cyclists as well as cars. You are setting yourself up for a dangerous situa-

tion if you only pay attention to other cars on the road.”

He said the ThinkBike movement in South Africa arose partly due to the lack of regard paid to cyclists by drivers.

“There is a belief that cyclists have less right to the road and should keep out of a motorist’s way. Part of keeping cyclists safe is to change attitudes towards two-wheel drivers. They are just as entitled to be on the road as you,” said Herbert.

He advised drivers to take heed of the laws that govern cyclists. “In South Africa, bicycles are considered as legal vehicles and are bound to the same laws as motor vehicles. If you know what rules of the road govern cyclists,

Business news BUSINESS REPORTER THE mid-term budget presentation highlighted pressure on economic growth with a revised 0.5% for 2016 and forecasts of 1.3% for 2017 and two percent for 2018.

The budget deficit for 2016/7 was revised upwards from 3.2% of GDP to 3.4%. Inflation expectations are for a reduction from current levels of 6.4% to around 5.9% by 2018.

Total government debt is expected to continue rising until 2019/20 when it should stabilise around 48% of GDP. The government expenditure ceiling has been cut by R26 billion and an additional R43 billion will be raised via tax increases over the next two years.

Infrastructure investment of R987 billion over the next three years will focus on energy, transport and telecommunications.

Finally, an additional R17.6 billion has been set aside for post school education and training.

In other business news, the NPA has withdrawn fraud charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and two other former SARS officials.

As a result the rand gained two percent against the dollar reaching its highest level in five weeks.

The bank index on the JSE reacted with its biggest daily gain since March to its highest level since 24 August.

On the back of a stronger rand, the yield on government bonds reduced to 8.7%, the lowest since 10 October. S outh Africa also registered a “surprise” trade surplus of R6.7 billion in September further underpinning the rand.

Commodity exports were up while imports of petroleum and vegetable products dropped.

PRAVIN Gordhan needs to be congratulated on a balanced and principled mid-term budget announcement. Given the tough economic situation and the distraction of facing spurious “fraud” charges, he delivered a mature and informed package that continues to reinforce spending cuts as well as the determination to keep key economic indicators in focus.

Although he didn’t have much to work with, this is the kind of fiscal maturity that ratings agencies want to see. Thankfully, the charges have now been withdrawn so the man can focus on walking what can only be called a tightrope as we try to avoid a ratings downgrade in December.

Speaking of ratings agencies, the proposed BRICS agency has come under focus with Jacob Zuma advocating

the fast tracking of the setting up of what he calls “a competitor” to Fitch, S&P and Moody’s.

Zuma has criticised the “big three” for showing a bias against emerging markets. The reality is that ratings agencies have no reason to show any bias. They are not providers of finance, they merely issue objective assessments of the risk associated with lending money to various countries.

As with any financial transaction, the level of risk determines the cost of borrowing. A Brics ratings agency risk assessment will have no bearing on how a non-Brics investor views risk, so what’s the point?

When one compares a professional and mature piece of work like the midterm budget with a politically motivated and amateurish initiative like a Brics ratings agency, the difference in the quality and aptitude of some of our leaders becomes starkly apparent.

Fitness gurus were dressed in Halloween costumes, taking on the fitness challenge, which began with a run from St Michaels Beach back to CrossFit Wild Coast gym (box).

Crossfit Wild Coast owner Mitchell Anderson said the turnout was amazing.

“The Halloween Havoc was a fun way for the CrossFit community to get together and compete. We had teams from other boxes visiting our box to test each other’s fitness. I trust we all had a good time and it was a great way to get together, celebrating Halloween and fitness.,” he said.

Prizes were awarded to winning teams, best dressed teams and a braai was held at the end.

Biking and trail challenge draws scores WO successful sporting events were hosted by Wild Coast Sun this past weekend. On Saturday the fifth and final race of the South Coast MTB Series took place while the trail run was held on Sunday.
