RUSTRATED Merlewood residents took to the streets on Tuesday morning, demanding answers from the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality about why electricity has still not been installed in their homes, which they moved into a year ago.

It has been a 20-year wait for some residents, who were promised houses in the nineties and

only last year did 66 beneficiaries get their title deeds.

This is the first phase of the mixed income housing settlement and there are more than 200 houses that still have to be built.

The N2 was barricaded with burning tyres and rocks, which disrupted traffic and SAPS had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd so that traffic could flow. >> STORY CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Police seek assistance about missing man POLICE are asking the public to assist in a missing person case, which was opened in Hibberedene.

Sandile Excellent Shazi (33), who lived at Sihlonyaneni location in Hibberdene, was reported missing by his family.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Shazi was reported last seen on 10 September.

Shazi drives a white Toyota Corolla registration number, ND 775 827.

“Anyone with any information on Shazi can help the police find him by contacting Constable Lilly Shinga on 039 699 9824 or 083 240 6703,” said Wiid. - Supplied.

APS Port Edward commander SAPS, Lieutenant-Colonel Geoff Ngcobo, RTI members, conservation services and Department of Home staff held a roadblock looking for stolen vehicles and property, suspects, drugs, unlicenced firearms and ammunition, illegal immigrants and unroadworthy vehicles.

Over 300 vehicles were stopped and searched, which resulted in the recovery of 20kgs of dagga valued at R28 200. Two people were charged for possession of dagga. Ten kilograms of stripped copper wire was also found in one vehicle and one unlicenced 9mm pistol was recovered.

“It was established that the owner of the firearm had a licence, but he had lost it a long time ago and had never applied for another one. The owner has in the meantime followed the correct procedure to renew the licence,” said Wiid. Numerous similar road blocks and stop-and-search operations are in the pipeline in the entire Ugu policing cluster for the festive period.

Robbers stopped in their ATM­robbery tracks PLANS to rob an ATM in Hibberdene were botched as SAPS members stopped a group of robbers in their tracks on Tuesday morning.

One of the men were arrested while the others fled.

“At approximately 1.30am two members from Hibberdene police were on their way from a complaint on the R102 Sipofu road, when they received a complaint about an alarm that was activated at an ATM nearby,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“They responded, just in time to see three vehicles leaving, and requested back-up,” said Wiid.

Members from Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team (TRT), who were close by, reacted and followed one of the vehicles [white Nissan] onto the N2 freeway northbound.

Once the driver of the vehicle saw he was being followed, shots were fired at the police.

The police returned fire and subsequently the white Nissan was forced to stop.

“Some suspects fled on foot, but one man was arrested. A Z88 pistol,

balaclavas, angle grinders and gloves were found in the vehicle. No one was injured,” said Wiid.

Due to the quick response of the Hibberdene police and the TRT members, the suspects abandoned their plans to cut open the ATM and tried to evade the police.

“The suspect could face charges of attempted business robbery and attempted murder,” added Wiid.

Acting cluster commander of Ugu Cluster, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya, was delighted with the swift response by police members and the successful arrest of one suspect.

Perpetrators enter shop through roof A GAMALAKHE supermarket was broken into in the early hours of Wednesday.

Gamalakhe SAPS, who were on duty, heard a suspicious sound and went to investigate.

“They approached the shop in the town and saw people fleeing from the premises,” said police

spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Upon investigation it was discovered that the perpetrators had gained entry through the roof of the building and then deactivated the alarm system.

It appears they had attempted to cut open two ATM safes inside

the shop, with angle grinders, but abandoned the mission when they heard the police approaching. No arrests have been made as yet.

Men sentenced for culpable homicide TWO men, accused of culpable homicide, were recently found guilty and sentenced for car accidents, which occurred during 2015.

In the first case, Mbuso Jeffrey Gumbi (32), was sentenced to a fine of R20 000 or one year imprisonment and his driver’s licence was suspended for 12 months.

The accident happened on the N2 near Mfazazane on 23 July, 2015 at 3.15pm.

Two sedans were involved and Gumbi was the driver of one of the vehicles. A man was killed and several passengers were injured.

In the next accident, which happened at Dingimbiza near Umzumbe, the driver, Siyanda Mthethwa (32), was driving a bakkie when he ran over a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was found lying on the ground with multiple injuries to his head.

Mthethwa was sentenced to R12 000 or six months imprisonment.

EMBERS of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) SACP and staff of the Esayidi TVET College in Ugu District picketed outside the college’s central office in Port Shepstone, asking management to forward their concerns to the Department of Higher Education.

The picketers were disappointed, however, because when they got to the office to hand over the memorandum no one was there to accept it as arranged with management prior to the picket.

NEHAWU branch chair Yolanda Khumalo said the aim of the picket was for college management to be the messenger that would take their concerns to the department head, not to fight management.

The South African Communist Party district organiser, Sifiso Ndlovu in the health sector, addressed his members saying he supports their action and will be part of the march that has been organised at provincial level to take place on 10 November in Pietermaritzburg.

Eventually Dr Nzimande arrived and accepted the memorandum from the branch and organisation chair Chad Davey, saying he was delayed in a meeting and apologised saying that the person he delegated to accept the memo did not arrive.

The memorandum raised issues pertaining to the enrolment of students, who will be doing their National Certificate Vocational (NCV) level in 2017, wages, retraction of contracted staff of which over a 100 lecturers have

received letters of termination of contracts, among others.

Dr Nzimande said he accepts the memorandum and will be submitting it to the department head before 10 November.

“I hereby accept the memorandum. I have been made aware it is for the department and not the college. I will make sure that it gets to them before the next march,” said Nzimande.

After his acceptance staff and supporting members dispersed peacefully. The Department of Higher Eduction was contacted for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.

New P.R. councillor sworn in PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com UMZUMBE community members sang songs of praise about the appointment of the new proportional representation (P.R.) councillor, Richard Mkhize, who was recently sworn in by council Speaker Cllr Matho Shozi after the resignation of former Umzumbe Mayor and councillor, Sydney Gumede.

On Umzumbe Municipality’s Facebook page people said Mkhize’s appointment was long overdue.

“We would like to congratulate Mkhize on his new appointment, he really deserves the position, he is indeed a very active member of the community,” said one of the followers.

In a statement Umzumbe spokesperson Trevor Khanyile said council assigned Mkhize as the P.R. for Ward 17.

Mkhize is a pastor by profession and is under no illusion about his new responsibilities.

“Mkhize is very aware of his duties,” said Khanyile.

Khanyile said the speaker assured council that Mkhize will perform his duties in the best interest of the community.

"As much as I am a P.R. councillor I will be at the forefront to assist our people to ensure they see development.

“We are not councillors for ourselves, we are councillors for the communities that elected us to serve them,” he said.

FTER many years of complaints from the community and police officers at the Gamalakhe Police Station, their voices seem to have been finally heard.

Gamalakhe SAPS have been operating out of prefabricated rooms for years, some of which are in bad condition.

A few months ago a report about a broken door at the police station charge office was published with complaints from the officers saying that when they are on night duty it is cold and their safety is a concern as the door did not close.

The officers say they are allegedly getting sick from working under these trying conditions and the community said that another reason that contributes to the crime in the area is the condition of the police station.

Police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum has confirmed that

The Department of Public Works was contacted and have confirmed that the handover of the site was done on 13 September.

Thami Mchunu spokesperson of Department of Public Works said it

expected that construction will be complete in 2018.

“I can confirm that work is continuing on site and the land that is being cleared behind and around the station is for the new building of Gamalakhe Police Station.”

The new building will cost R88 669 355.

Author launches first book on home soil

SIZI E. Nkosi, a former Sheppie High pupil, launched his book at St Mike’s Hotel on Saturday.

The book, titled I’m a Different Mess Than I Was Yesterday, was well received.

In his book, Nkosi speaks about how he could have had it all, but he went down a different path because of the choices he made.

He tells his experience about losing his mother and sister, battling alcoholism, fatherhood, and more.

The message he hopes to convey through the book is that there is always hope.

Sheppie Lions reap rewards at conference LIONS president Jeff Smith, council chairman Denis Meyer, past district governor Martin Rundle, past club president Alastair Warman, Lion Alister and Lion Lady Irene Love represented the Port Shepstone Lions Club at the annual District 410-C Mid-Year Conference held at Sierra Family Adventure Resort in Mooi River last weekend.

The conference was attended by Lions representing 22 Lions Clubs in KZN and the Free State.

At the conference awards were presented by the immediate past district governor to various clubs in recognition of outstanding service and achievements during the 2015/2016 fiscal year.

Port Shepstone Lions received a total of nine district awards, which included the Pierre Theron Service

Project of the Year (for the club’s annual Lions Leadership Retreat), Overall Public Relations award, Ian Murray Project Public Relations award, Club Bulletin award, Hillary Moolman Diabetes Awareness Award, Geoff Chettle Club Secretary Award for the best administered club in the district and a Louis Halse award for being a 100% contributing club.

In addition to these, the club was also one of only two clubs in the district to receive a Lions Legacy Project award and a 4 Diamond Lions Centennial Service Challenge Award from Lions Clubs International in recognition of meeting the four challenges, namely, engaging our youth, protecting our environment, sharing the vision and relieving the hunger.

These awards were accepted by club president Smith.

The conference was officially opened by Meyer and included presentations by various Lions clubs and district project chairman, sharing of service ideas and fellowship among the clubs.

Smith shared a presentation on how to organise and run a leadership retreat.

Proceedings ended with a “Mad Hatters”-themed party.

Lions Clubs International celebrates 100 years of service in 2017 and to commemorate this achievement, a Centenary Challenge programme was launched to provide community services to 100 million underprivileged people worldwide.

Lions Clubs worldwide have already surpassed this challenge and have reached over 112 million.

This came after one of the delegates, Mons Anner, visited South Africa a few years ago and saw the need to assist the school.

St Martin De Porres Comprehensive School celebrated this day on Wednesday 3 November when pupils put on a play that narrated his life.

Charl van der Walt of St Martins said the celebration is a day in which is special for the school as it is named after the Godly man.

“We celebrate his life and love of all people and we as the school strive to emulate and uphold his name,” said Van Der Walt.

He said although St Martin came from humble beginnings, his mother, a nurse, educated him and throughout his life he cared not only for people, but also for animals.

Others celebrate the life of St Martin by holding a feast called “The Feast of Saint Martin” Martinstag or Martinmas.

Swim safely this summer THE public is warned to be extra cautious when swimming at the beach, in rivers or swimming pools.

This warning comes from SAPS after a number of people drowned recently in Durban and South Coast areas. Educational and awareness campaigns were held in the province to promote safety at recreational facilities or in the sea.

As the festive season approaches, drowning is an ever-present risk when people go on to rivers, beaches, dams and swimming pools.

Many incidents of drowning are linked to the misuse of alcohol and recklessness.

Water safety tips to be followed: • Before entering the sea, swimmers must watch the waves and avoid places where there is a strong backwash, obvious rip currents or a danger of being washed onto the rocks.

• Check the weather and the tides before you leave home – if the sea is too rough, you could be swept away.

• Only enter where the waves are straight and gentle.

• If you experience a strong current, get out of the sea, or at least, do not go in deep.

• Never swim while intoxicated. Alcohol impairs judgement and unnecessary risks are taken. An intoxicated swimmer will tire more easily, increasing the chance of an accident or drowning.

• Check with the lifeguards on duty what the surf conditions are before entering the sea.

• Only swim in designated areas that are supervised by lifeguards.

• If the lifeguards give you directions or instructions from the beach, obey them.

• Look out for warning signs and flags – a red flag means it is dangerous to swim.

• A red-and-yellow flag means lifeguards are on duty and you should only swim in the area between the flags.

• Avoid swimming immediately after a big meal, as there is a danger of having cramps.

• Do not dive into shallow seawater – many paraplegics broke their necks by diving into shallow pools and dams.

• Do not swim in river mouths, in dirty water, very early in the mornings, early evenings or after it had rained as shark activity increases in these conditions. Also do not swim when bluebottles are present as they are poisonous.

• Never leave a young child unattended near water and never make a child responsible for another child – not even for five minutes. Teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

• If a child is missing, check the water first seconds count in preventing drowning or permanent disability.

• Swimming aids, such as water wings or noodles, are fun toys for children, but they should never be used instead of approved flotation devices.

SOUTH Africa’s hottest musical acts, most extreme action sports’ stars and biking elite will be converging at the new South Coast Bike Fest (#SCBF2017) at Margate Beach from 27 to 30 April, 2017.

To cement Margate’s reputation as the country’s leading biking destination, the coastal town will be hosting a fourday festival with non-stop action taking place at various venues.

Visitors can expect incredible, highly-skilled performances as some of the country’s best skateboarding, BMX FMX and trials bike riders display choreographed manoeuvres sure to keep the crowds captivated throughout.

Getting the festive vibe started on Thursday, 27 April, 2017 will be some of the best bands to emerge from Cape Town.

These include electronic band, Die Heuwels Fantasties as well as alternative rock group, Fokofpolisiekar, and rapper, Jack Parow.

“That was it. My stage fright was over, but I still get nervous before I sing, but I now love singing to crowds.”

Tal has auditioned for many

talent competitions including Idols SA and her most recent venture has been auditioning for The Voice SA. “Sadly I did not make it, but I have not lost hope and I will be trying and working very hard towards my dream of becoming a singer,” she said.

“My family have been the best.

When asked where she sees herself after completing matric next year, Gal-Lee replied: “On the road, travelling and singing all over the world.”

UGU BEAT Ugu mayor recaps on Ugu development goals OVER and above the ongoing efforts to im­ prove water and sanitation infrastructure, the eradication of poverty and unemploy­ ment in the district is an equal priority.

This was shared by the Ugu District Mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza at KwaL­ atshoda Community Hall at a sitting of the Mayoral Izimbizo on Tuesday.

Mnyayiza highlighted that in 2012, Ugu District Municipality developed the Ugu Growth and Development Strategy (GDS), which aims to create a district that leads in tourism, agriculture and manufacturing, one that will be the driver of job creation thus ensuring that previously margina­ lised communities benefit.

We have pursued numerous economy drivers to channel business growth oppor­ tunities to the South Coast, which will in turn enhance tourism and enable the dis­ trict to achieve the set growth and devel­ opment goals where everyone benefits from socioeconomic opportunities and services.

Our district has significant economic development potential that can have a positive impact on the lives of our commu­ nities. It is therefore the onus of our gov­ ernment to ensure collaboration with rele­ vant stakeholders for this vision to materi­ alise.

Our responsibility as government is to ensure we change the lives of our commu­ nities for the better and we are responsible to ensure that our communities are provid­ ed with the basic needs of water and sani­ tation and are exposed to opportunities that will assist in the fight against unem­ ployment and poverty.

I would like to think that we may, after our season’s research, be able to report that the 2016/2017 holidays have been one of the best. There is certainly much in our year-end events programme to keep all and sundry favourably occupied and leisure filled.

We all know this year has been weighty on the wallet so in order to encourage maximum visitation here we

As a young person trying to get ahead and pass their exams, there is sometimes so much to deal with in life – for instance, divorced parents, parent’s partners and their children, teachers who are distract­ ed, and of course, bullying peers.

They also have the decision to make when they leave school ­ whether to go to work or continue studying.

In my life there was no choice, there was just no money to go to university so I went straight to work.

Then I decided to take a gap year and work overseas ­ it was the best thing I could have done, because by the time my peers were qualifying, I was earning more than them, and if two people went to ap­ ply for a job, and one had experience and

all can do our bit. One aspect is to focus on the Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) market.

Instead of South Coasters going to other parts of the country to see loved ones, why not have them come to our popular paradise?

The VFR market is arguably the largest segment within the tourism industry so if more families here invite their friends and relatives there will be a major economic spin off in terms of retail and hospitality.

It is well known that many VFR visitors (and here I think of the retirees) like places so much and want to be close to those they love so they buy into property and retirement estates.

I know that a new estate is earmarked in the Umtentweni area so I guess the estate agencies will be going flat out to sell in what can be very much a buyer’s market down here.

That is why we are very much a value driven destination.

Sellers will no doubt be sprucing up their properties to get the price they are looking for, but it goes beyond their intent. The look and feel of a destination like ours is critical so it is important that hospitality practitioners and businesses present their properties in an aesthetically appealing fashion. That good old lick of paint and beautifully landscaped gardens before season can go some way in making the right impression.

So as the busiest season of the year is in the wind, we trust that readers will share our optimism in a spirit of all round goodwill - something that the South Coast has showered on our visitors for decades.

Councillor takes bull by the horns I AM glad to see that the DA ward councillor George Henderson has taken the bull by the horns and is getting the roads into shape again, and also taking the time and trouble to advise the public concerning the pothole issues that has been a growing concern in the past.

Also it seems that with more teams at work we should see a difference in workmanship too.

I just hope that more effort will be put into the job now with more stone compressed into the holes to hold the tar in place and allowing enough drying time before putting road into use again.

Rather a job done correctly and longer wear and tear than a rushed job and money wasted

Encouraged Citizen Margate

I WAS reading the article about the parking for the elderly and the disabled at the mall and I so beg to differ.

The mall security and car guards do not stop able-bodied people from using the disabled parking space. In fact when they try to do so people ignore them or fight with them.

I shop at the Hibiscus Coast Mall every day and every day I see able-bodied people parking there, sometimes all the bays are taken up by able bodied people, especially between 4pm and 6pm.

No, the sign boards don’t do anything to deter people from parking there, and neither does the management clamp the wheels of the perpetra-

tors as stated on their notice boards.

Since the boards were erected there has not been one able- bodied driver’s wheel clamped.

Just ask some of the shop owners, who can see onto these parking bays, they will confirm this.

People even park in the lanes meant for driving and one has to go around into the oncoming lane to get past because these people are too lazy to walk the short distance to the shops.

It’s actually disgusting how lazy people have become these days. It would be a great idea to go undercover with a camera and take photos of all these able-bodied perpetrators.

That said and done, I have said my piece.

Nico Carstens ­ ‘n ware Suid­Afrikaanse ikoon groet

K was nog aan die wonder oor watter onderwerp om vandeesweek te skryf, toe ek ‘n oproep kry van een van die Suidkus se bekendste inwoners, Abrie Spies.

“Johan, jy weet mos Nico Carstens is vroeër vandeesweek oorlede. Hoekom skryf jy nie oor sy lewe nie? Ek het hom geken, en kan jou inligting gee.”

Probleem opgelos.

Soos talle Suid-Afrikaners, en veral die liefhebbers van boeremusiek, het ek met Carstens se musiek grootgeword.

Destyds nooit so mal daaroor soos oor Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley en Cliff Richard nie, maar het lekker op Carstens-musiek saamgedans wanneer pa en ma ‘n verjaardagpartytjie “gegooi” of elders bygewoon het. Later het ek ook besef dat Nico Carstens inderdaad een van die reuse in die Suid-Afrikaanse musiekbedryf was, en die benaming ikoon, wat deesdae te maklik uitgedeel word, dubbel en dwars verdien het. Ek spring toe in my motor, en ry na Abrie se kantoor toe.

Op Abrie se lessenaar was ‘n klomp ou bladmusiek waarvan hy my bladsye gewys het met ‘n persoonlike Carstens-konneksie.

Abri, reeds 89 maar nog op en wakker, het my geheue verfris dat hy self ‘n kranige trekklavierspeler was, en lank met sy eie orkes, die Werda-boere-orkes, op plekke soos Ladysmith en Newcastle opgetree het. Abrie het Nico in die laat veertigerjare ontmoet toe Carstens as lid van Hendrik Susan se orkes oor die lengte en breedte van Suid-Afrika konserte gehou het.

Op Newcastle is Nico een aand in 1947 op ‘n konsert wat Abrie bygewoon het, voorgestel as die nuwe trekklavierspeler van Susan se orkes, en Carstens het losgetrek met ‘n keurspel Strausswalse. Abrie het onmiddellik besef hierdie man, toe slegs 21 jaar

oud, was van internasionale gehalte.

Hierna het Abrie sy eie orkes begin, en het hy by Nico toestemming gekry om Carstens se komposisie Werda as die orkes se kenwysie te gebruik. Hy het Abrie die bladmusiek gestuur saam met ‘n persoonlike brief in sy eie handskrif, wat Abrie nou nog het.

Hy het later ook die temamusiek vir die radioprogram Bog met Bloumaandag gratis aangestuur, tesame met die bladmusiek van nog Carstens- en Anton de Waal-kompetisies, 185 van hulle. Dis vandag Boeremusiek-Afrikana, en is in Abrie se besit.

Abrie onthou sy orkes het Nico se nuwe komposisie Hasie een aand op Ladysmith gespeel, en dit was baie gewild onder die gehoor. Hy het Nico laat weet hier kom ‘n ding en Al Debbo se weergawe was later wel ‘n top-treffer.

Abrie, wat reeds op die Hoër-Volkskool op Heidelberg klavier en later trekklavier leer speel het, sê hoewel daar baie ander top-akkordionspelers oor die jare in Suid-Afrika was, was Carstens enig in sy soort en met ‘n eie styl.

Terug in my kantoor het ek ‘n artikel van Willemien Froneman in Beeld oor Carstens se lewe en werk, waarop Abrie my aandag gevestig het, gelees.

Talle herinneringe het teruggekom.

My pa het altyd gesê Carstens het vroue ingeruil vir nuwes soos ander mans hul motors vervang het. Nico was sewe keer getroud, het vyf kinders gehad van wie een oorlede is.

Ingrid Howard, wat by was toe Carstens verlede Dinsdag op 90-jarige ouderdom in Kaapstad oorlede is, vertel hy het sy musiek Carstensmusiek genoem, nie boeremusiek nie.

Volgens Howard “kon Carstens vrek oor ‘n mooi vrou en spoggerige motors. Hy was mal oor Cadillacs”. Die musikant Schalk Joubert vertel in Froneman se berig van Carstens en Jurie Wessels wat ‘n pap band gekry het.

Froneman wys daarop dat Carstens inderdaad Suid-Afrika se eerste musikant- ‘celebrity’ was. Hy het oor die jare baie, baie geld verdien, (van 1953-58 is meer as ‘n miljoen van sy plate verkoop). Hy is oor meer as 20 jaar gereeld oor die radio gehoor, en was as komponis ‘n internasionale sukses met toptreffers soos Zambezi. Daar was talle ander soos, Ek Ry met die Trein, Rickshaw Boy, Fanagalo, net te veel om hier op te noem.

Internasionale kunstenaars soos Eddie Calvert en Bert Kaempfert het internasionale treffers met van sy nommers gehad.

In die sewentigerjare het dinge moeiliker geraak agv. die koms van TV en ander veranderinge, en het sy optrede drasties afgeneem. Hy het hom meer toegelê op komposisies.

In die negentigs het hy met kunstenaars soos Ray Phiri saamgewerk en

LAAT verlede Dinsdagmiddag het Oom Pottie en ek uit die Watergat weggeglip en die vergadering van die sogenaamde Active Citizens Group gaan bywoon. Dis nou die mense wat oor politieke, taal en godsdiensgrense bymekaar gekom het omdat hulle besluit het “tot hiertoe en nie verder nie”, en hul steun vir Pravin Gordhan en teenkanting teen “Staatskaping” en korrupsie ondubbelsinnig verklaar het.

Ons was half huiwerig om te gaan omdat die vergadering byeengeroep is deur ‘n aktiewe, senior ANC-‘aktivis’, soos hy homself noem, en het gewonder of dit nie bloot ‘n politieke foefie

was nie. Maar groot was ons verrassing.

Die een spreker na die ander, die meerderheid van hulle ongetwyfeld regeringsondersteuners, en geestelike leiers van die Hindoe-, Moslem- en Christengelowe, het nie doekies omgedraai nie. Die boodskap was oorweldigend: kom ons beveg politici en sakemanne wat ons regering besoedel en wat ons mense se geld op verskillende maniere steel en verduister.

Kom ons staan saam en steun en beskerm Pravin Gordhan, onder meer teen die Guptas. ‘n Anglikaanse biskop, wat die minister goed ken, het ‘n boodskap van welwillendheid van

Gordhan aan die vergadering voorgelees, en aan die einde is ‘n boodskap van steun aan die minister gestuur.

Hoewel dit nooit so uitgespel is nie, was die onderliggende boodskap en implikasie baie duidelik: Jacob Zuma moet loop. Hoe gouer hoe beter.

Terug in die Watergat het ons ondubbelsinnig besef dit was die moeite werd om die vergadering by te woon: dit bewys weereens wanneer mense, ongeag hul verskillende oortuigings en agtergronde, integriteit en beginsels voorop stel, bereid is om besware openbaar te maak, en onwrikbaar saam te staan oor belangrike beginsels, is daar vir Suid-Afrika hoop.

Verder is daar nie veel om oor die afgelope week te rapporteer nie, behalwe dat ds. Mossie Mosterd en sy vrou van Nelspruit wat kom beesstert eet het, ons vertel het van ‘n kinderdiens in sy kerk so twee maande gelede.

Hy het oor Daniël in die leeukuil gepreek, en gevra dat al die kinders voor moet kom sit. Baie dramaties vertel

dominee Mosterd: “En die koning se soldate gryp vir Daniël, hulle ruk hom rond, sleep hom na die leeukuil, en terwyl die diere honger brul, gooi hulle hom tussen die leeus in.”

Die kerk is tjoepstil en een seuntjie wat hom so ingeleef het in die storie, haak kliphard af: “So ‘n bliksem.”

Ds. Mosterd sê hy het hom amper in ‘n koma in gelag en kon nie verder preek nie. Hy moes een van die ouderlinge gevra om net af te sluit. Na die tyd het hy die ouers gevra om die seuntjie tog nie pak te gee nie want hy was die enigste een wat aandagtig geluister het.

Soms voel ons dat ons te veel tekortkominge het om so ‘n rolmodel vir iemand anders te wees.

Natuurlik is dit ook so dat mens ‘n anti-rolmodel kan wees. Die punt is egter dat ons as Christene, positiewe en navolgenswaardige le-

“Volg my voorbeeld, soos ek die voorbeeld van Christus volg,” skryf Paulus in 1 Korintiërs 11:1. Mens sou sy opdrag letterlik met die woord “mimiek” of naboots kon vertaal. Paulus was nie arrogant nie. Hy het nie gedink hy is sondeloos nie. Dis belangrik dat hy die woorde byvoeg “… soos wat ek die voorbeeld van Christus volg.”

Dit maak die verskil.

Ons kan vir ander rolmodelle wees as ons bereid is om nederig en erkentlik oor ons beperkinge te wees. KHANYA Hospice received a pleasant surprise from a cancer survivor recently.

Viva Naicker, from the South Coast, surprised Neil McDonald and his team with a donation she raised using her talent.

Naicker crocheted scarves and sold them over a period of two months and collected over R5 000, which she gave Hospice to say thank you for the work Khanya Hospice is doing on the South Coast.

Naicker also took a money tin from Hospice

to fill at home and is challenging survivors to do their bit for Breast Cancer Awareness Month for Hospice.

Men are ready for “Movember”, and have put plans in place to create awareness about men’s health.

FOR the second year the Nomusa Mqwebu SMME and Education Golf Development Trust, in partnership with the Margate Country Club, will host a fund-raising youth development golf day. The event will take place on 25 November at Margate Country Club.

The municipality also handed over a cheque for R250 000 to facilitate the initiative.

In her speech, RNM mayor, Nomusa Mqwebu said the agreement is to ensure young people get continuous development in order to attain professional golfing skills.

“We certainly put our confidence in the MCC to drive this programme to greater heights so that in the future we see historically disadvantaged young people become professionals in golf and participate in main stream tournaments where they will fly the flag of RNM high,” she

said.

The mayor said she hopes the agreement will also assist the developmental team with coaching skills and equipment, which will be required during their coaching.

“I am told that there are 10 young people who are receiving training and coaching, but we hope that at a later stage the number will increase to 50 and accommodate all the seven clusters of the municipality,” said the Mqwebu.

She said the municipality believes this game will distract young people from performing criminal acts and behaving unlawfully.

“We wish the young girls and boys the best of luck in this developmental programme and hope that our partnership with the MCC will bear fruit and lead us in achieving our goal in developing the young people to becoming professionals,” she said.

Standard of karate is improving >> More than 100 karateka participated in a tournament at Creston College

N Saturday shihans and senseis affiliated to the World Karate Federation (WKF) Ugu Karate Region, Karate KwaZuluNatal and Karate South Afrika (KSA) held a tournament at Creston College.

The tournament was held to select participants for the WKF Ugu team Brown and Black Belt Elite Championships 2017 for Ugu colours as well as trials for Karate KwaZulu-Natal colours. More than 100 karateka, ranging in age from five to veteran, participated in kata, kumite and unison.

Sensei Frank Moodley said it is pleasing to see the standard of karate in the area improving and dojos from Scottburgh to Margate working together.

“Our thanks go to Sensei Rodney Govender and Sensei Danric Vester, who were chief referee and centre referee respectively, who came down from Durban to impart their knowledge of the sport,” said Moodley.

The WKF Ugu karateka are now working hard in preparation for the 2016 Salga games.
