HE national 2016/2017 Blue Flag season and Tourism Blue Flag project beach launch was held at Marina Beach last Friday.

Dignitaries from WESSA, Tourism, municipality and representatives from qualifying beaches, which spread across 3000kms of the coast line, attended.

Programme director Malcolm Powell said 2016 marks the 16th anniversary of the Blue Flag programme, and 58 blue flags will be flown on beaches along SA’s coastline.

The Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KZN municipalities were awarded Blue Flag status for beaches in their areas.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) got seven for its beaches Hibberdene, Umzumbe, Southport, Lucien, Ramsgate, Marina and Trafalgar.

RNM Mayor Nomusa Mqwebu said she is honoured to receive these awards and encourages the community to continue working with the municipality to maintain the status of the beaches.

“The Blue Flag programme is a catalyst to improve tourism in the area, therefore to maintain the status of our beaches the municipality has partnered with businesses and the community to manage the cleanliness of our beaches. We are also looking forward to working on

Hanekom said that taking care of the beaches also includes taking care of marine life, which attracts tourists. He introduced the newly elected beach stewards who will be working along the coast ensuring that each kilometre of the 3 000km coastline is taken care of.

OR the first time in two years, Uvongo Crime and Safety Forum has had the lowest statistics in house break-ins.

“The total number of housebreak incidents for our area during the month of September has eventually dropped to below ten,” said Ernest Booysen, chairman of the forum.

August had seen over 20 residential burglaries.

He commended residents, the forum, SAPS, Block Watch and the teams of Maser Security and Wolf Security.

“We salute all of you. However, yesterday’s performance is tomorrow’s standard and we will have to double up on our efforts to achieve it on a continuous basis,” he added.

Booysen said one way to achieve this is if more people volunteer for the Block Watch.

“Come on, take up the challenge. Give us two hours of your time per month as a start and if you do not enjoy it, you can quit,” he said.

He said October has started off with new challenges as the forum has seen a dramatic increase in theft of motor vehicles all over the South Coast.

“It appears that a gang from outside our area has moved in and is operating mainly, but not exclusively, between 3am and 6am,” he said.

He advised that everyone lock their vehicles and keep the keys in a safe place overnight.

“Report suspicious activities involving slowdriving vehicles with foreign registration plates,” he added.

Murderer pays hefty price for crimes A 34-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to a total of 40 years in the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently after South Coast police made a breakthrough in several cases and arrested him.

Thabani Senzo Ntombela Luthuli was charged with attempted murder, but found not guilty, sexual assault - two years’, possession of firearm and possession of ammunition without licence -13 years’ imprisonment, robbery and theft of motor vehicle - 15 years’ and murder - 10 years’ imprisonment.

The charge for sexual assault, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition without licence will run concurrently.

He will spend an effective 25 years in prison.

On 7 April, 2015 Luthuli was at a tavern in Mfazazana where he was having drinks with a group of men. He sexually assaulted a woman at the tavern and an argument ensued.

A friend of the woman, who intervened,

was then shot by the accused and he died.

The same bullet, which killed the victim, also penetrated another person in the arm and he was taken to hospital.

Luthuli fled the scene.

Detectives then circulated Luthuli’s description and his details as a wanted person and his picture appeared in the media. Soon after this was circulated, the Umkomaas tracing team received information of his whereabouts.

He was arrested in June 2015.

He was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition and it was later established that the same firearm was used in the murder case.

Captain Vasu Govender from Hibberdene detectives charged him for the offences.

It was also established that he was sought

by Verulam detectives for the robbery of a shop owner and the theft of his motor vehicle which occurred in 2007. He was also charged for those offences. - Supplied.

Car thieves crash stolen vehicle THE adage, “you can run but you can’t hide”, proved to be true for a car thief who had to face the law on Sunday night.

He and a few others were in a stolen car that crashed on the P200, between Izotsha and Gamala­ khe, and then fled the scene.

When Constable Mark Banjo from the Port Shep­ stone K9 Unit arrived at the scene, he found the car badly damaged.

“He did not find any occupants in the car. It ap­ peared that the driver had lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a barrier,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant­Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Certain evidence located at the scene suggested that the occupants were seriously injured.

Sergeant Rudi Smit and Constable Sandile Mpis­ ane, also arrived at the scene, were informed that com­ munity members had seen a man on a foot path not

far from the accident scene.

SAPS responded and he was located. He had sus­ tained several injuries and was taken under police guard to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“It was later established that the car was stolen from a house in Port Edward the same evening. A theft of motor vehicle case is being investigated by Port Ed­ ward police,” said Wiid. ­ Supplied.

ON’T touch that, you don’t know where it has been.” This is what we usually hear a mother say to her child, but as adults, who shop daily, we should probably tell ourselves the same thing.

A local woman told the Fever she recently had to go through several shopping baskets until she found one that was “suitable” to use because they were all very dirty.

“I was disgusted because the basket had a piece of rotten lettuce stuck to it and had sludge stuck in the corners. I shop almost daily and notice this is a regular occurrence in most stores,” she said.

The woman brought this to the attention of the store managers, except the one that had the decaying piece of lettuce stuck to it.

“By then, I was fed up and didn’t even bother to complain. I just carried on going through baskets until I found a clean one,” she said.

“My question is, if that’s what’s in

these baskets, what are on the handles?”

Bidvest Steiner has the answer to that. A study conducted in 2011 in the United States, revealed that bacteria found on shopping trolleys match what is found in public toilets.

Out of 85 trolleys examined it was found that 72% of them tested positive for faecal bacteria and half carried traces of E. coli, the source of the most severe “food poisoning”, which can be fatal in some cases.

“Sanitising materials are also available at till points for cleaning till surfaces and spillages that may have occurred in trolleys and baskets,” said Van Wyk. All stores interviewed reported that wet wipes are available to customers to sanitise trolleys and baskets, normally at the entrance.

During this period the municipality received an unqualified audit with no findings.

ETAIL store client Theresa Pastor says she is tired of the calls she has been receiving from attorneys on behalf of Woolworths saying she has not paid her mother’s accounts.

Pastor is the daughter of 85-yearold Louise Brazier, the account holder, authorised by her to handle all her accounts.

The account had been handed over to Woolworths attorneys, who have been calling Louise demanding payment, even though payment has been made.

“My mother is old and can’t handle accounts on her own. For more than 10 months we have been getting calls

Every month Pastor receives 60 calls from the attorneys, who fail to understand that the accounts are paid monthly via stop order.

Pastor visited the Shelly Beach branch to file a complaint and was told the account has been handed over, and that she should contact the attorneys.

“I contacted the attorneys notifying them that payments are being made and have even sent them proof, but they still call me. This really frustrates

me as a client and I feel it is unfair on my mother.”

Pastor has only received one letter from the attorneys and that was last year when her debit order stopped going through.

Pastor has recorded the calls and documents she has sent to Woolworths and attorneys as proof of payment.

Fever contacted Woolworths head office in this regard and in a statement they confirmed that the accounts are being paid.

“There are two accounts in question, an in-store card account and a personal loan account.

“The client is making payments via monthly stop orders on both accounts.

WITH seven beaches of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality receiving Blue Flag status the question why Margate Beach is not on the list is asked.

Margate Beach lost its international Blue Flag status after sea water quality tests revealed contaminated samples from nearby stormwater and sewage systems in 2012.

“The water quality of Margate Beach is still being affected by a stream that flows from the taxi rank to the ocean and we are in negotiations with Ugu District to see to the matter,” said Mbili.

Mbili said as the municipality they would like Margate to regain its Blue Flag status as it is one of the busiest and most popular beaches on the South Coast.

“It is not the municipality’s aim for all its beaches to get Blue Flag status, however its is our aim to ensure that the water quality on all our beaches is good and safe for all to enjoy,” he said.

IT’S been months since the amalgamation of Hibiscus Coast and Ezinqoleni municipal­ ities.

Two months after the merger was made official the new Ray Nkonyeni Municipality logo has still not been finalised.

Responding to a question at a media briefing at council chambers on Tuesday, municipal manager Max Mbili said the mu­ nicipality is in the final stages of presenting the new logo to council.

He said the exact date of the presenta­ tion has not been set, however, it is possible that by the next council meeting the logo will be ready to be presented to council.

Mbili didn’t want to commit himself to a set date, but said the latest it would be ready will be November.

Ray Nkonyeni Mayor Councillor Nomusa Mqwebu explained to the media that there has been a hold up with the process.

“Councillors have been attending work­ shops and have been busy. We have been discussing the issue of the logo and the mu­ nicipal manager has explained that finali­ sation will take place soon,” said Mqwebu.

ANY fitness freaks have chosen online fitness training over the conventional personal training.

While one may think it’s merely a trend that people follow because their aunty’s cousin and their cousin is doing it, or because everything is online nowadays, there is more to this choice than meets the eye.

“I started seven months ago. I have never been to gym or done fitness training before and decided to go the online training way,” said Fransisca Labuschagne of Margate.

She is a bikini fitness athlete who

Because she communicates with her trainer via email or social media,

this choice of training requires a lot of discipline.

“This form of training has more challenges. It’s so easy to miss a session or lie on your measurement charts about the kilogram you picked up. It requires dedication and you have to motivate yourself.”

Online training works for Labuschagne because she is a stay-at-home mother of two boys.

“I can train whenever I have time,

in the comfort of my own home. I am not restricted to a coach waiting for me at the gym.”

Labuschagne will represent South Africa in the IFBB competition in Poland in November.

Natasha Litkie of Trainher Fitness said she found online training was unsuccessful with her clients.

In a statement CANSA said the key message is for women to keep themselves informed so they can recognise early warning signs and know how to reduce their risk.

“The focus of our women’s health campaign is mainly on breast and cervical cancers,” says CANSA Chief Executive Officer, Elize Joubert.

“They’re the most common cancers affecting South African women, with cervical cancer being the leading cause of death for women in developing countries.”

Joubert said there are signs that women should look out and encouraged them to go for regular screenings, which is available at CANSA branches.

“The incidence of breast cancer among South African women is increasing with women having a one-in-29 lifetime risk of being diagnosed and the most common cancer in women of all races and ethnicities.

“With such alarming rates, it places many women at risk, so we urge all women to go for regular screenings and find ways to lower their cancer risk.”

Women can contact the CANSA Care Centre in Port Shepstone to arrange a clinical breast examination and staff will guide them through the public health care system and offer them and their loved ones advice, care and support.

Women can also ask the care centre about CANSA’s mobile health clinic.

Sesethu Senene of Port Shepstone CANSA Care Centre said they will be offering screening in various areas.

“We will be visiting a few areas with Rotary. We started last Wednesday and visited SARS and on Wednesday we visited Margate Clinic. O amount of rain on Saturday 1 October could have dampened the mood of the day and the excitement in the air was almost tangible. This was the day the public would be introduced to the new and improved Kart Freaks in Margate.

Ray Nkonyeni Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ronnie Nair, who was there to officiate the opening ceremony, said: “It’s places like these that assist in promoting and sustaining tourism on the South Coast.”

After the official business was concluded, the fun began and Nair challenged the new owner, Clint Green, to a race.

Changes to the facility were easy to notice even before you walked through the door. You could hear music where there was usually just the buzzing sound coming from the gokart motors.

This addition was welcomed by the staff and customers, who were danc-

ing and singing. A sweet shop now replaces the workshop at the entrance and a welcoming diner sits comfortably on the viewing deck.

Walking around, one could see nothing but smiles, hear laughter and smell the tyres as they skidded on the asphalt.

THE 2016 KwaZulu-Natal Musical Talent Show music auditions were held at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality chambers on Sunday.

The auditions got off to a slow start and by the end of the day only three people - Mbali Mthwane, Kheta Shazi and Buhle Kunene turned up to sing.

Kunene made it through to the next round where she will compete with other potential singers chosen from 61 KZN municipalities.

The organisers will schedule another audition over a weekend and said there are awesome prizes to be won.

LORAL design is the passion of 18 individuals who meet at the NG Kerk in Port Shepstone once a month.

As they are constantly looking for ways to improve their skills.

They also attend garden shows and basically any event that has to do with flowers.

The Port Shepstone Floral Art Club, as they call themselves, recently attended The Witness Garden Show in Pietermaritzburg for a four-day

workshop, facilitated by Mark Pampling.

Pampling is a world renowned floral art designer from Australia and is a world cup competitor, teacher and lecturer in floral art.

“It was very interesting to learn new techniques and methods of floral art,” said Sanitha Stephen from the club.

She and six club members, attended the workshop.

“Another interesting part to the workshop were the floral demonstrations by two coaches from Port Elizabeth,” she said.

The members also met Tanya Visser, a TV presenter on a home and garden show.

Usually the Port Shepstone Floral Art Club holds a display at the garden show, but this year members opted to rather attend the workshop.

“Our club is small, but we would like others, who are interested in floral art, to join,” she said.

The club is affiliated to the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies and interacts regularly with floral art clubs throughout KwaZuluNatal.

One of the businesses that received assistance from SmartXChange is Nkosi Da King Phungula International, owned by Nkosi Phungula.

He is a motivational speaker, who embarked on a tour to local schools recently to give pupils advice and support and motivate them.

“It was a huge success and of great benefit to many communities,” said Fatima Sarigat, SmartXchange centre manager.

Phungula visited 20 rural schools in September within the Umdoni, Umzumbe, Ray Nkonyeni and Umuziwabantu municipalities.

“The tour covered numerous topics under the theme ‘I Choose’,” said Sarigat.

Phungula told children that the choices they make today will affect their lives tomorrow.

SmartxChange and Phungula also donated sanitary towels and toiletries to children in need, who had been identified by teachers.

VUSI MTHALANE OUR senior journalist, Candyce Krishna wrote a very interesting column about music two weeks ago (Music – then and now, 29 September), which was a hit with our readers, and it goes without saying that we all love music.

It also had me thinking about all the good music I used to listen to on the radio from the mid-eighties up to when radio was taken over by utter noise.

One of my favourite songs is Video

Days of quality radio, good music, gone forever Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles.

The song came out in 1979, but the original version was done two years earlier by Bruce Wolley and the Camera Club. Its title is self-explanatory.

The popularity of TV and music videos was starting to kill radio even as far back as 39 years ago. The irony is that the very same song went down in history as the first music video played on MTV, a TV channel (at that time) strictly dedicated to playing music videos.

I remember hearing the song for the first time and liking it immediately. It was on Capital Radio 604 in 1993. Capital Radio, as it was commonly called, was a medium wave (AM) radio station based in Port St Johns in the then Transkei, which was supposed to be a separate country from South Africa.

The main aim of Capital Radio was to broadcast uncensored news and

LAST week the minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom was down here to announce the national 2016/2017 Blue Flag beaches and given this is the second time in three years that the South Coast has hosted this impor­ tant event. The day at Marina Beach was something special.

Not only was the minister here, but in at­ tendance was the KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental

music. Its multiracial line-up of presenters came mostly from the United Kingdom and South Africa and everything about the station went against the laws of the apartheid South Africa.

When the station started broadcasting in 1979, it could reach listeners in South Africa and give them news they were not supposed to hear and music they were not supposed to listen to.

People of all races would call in and say exactly what was on their mind regarding the political situation of that time without fear. Because it was a medium wave station, ships at sea could pick it up from anywhere in the world and there would be occasional calls from ports in faraway lands.

That used to fascinate me as a teen that a person in the middle of the Pacific was also listening to the same song

The bench marks set by the Blue Flag programme aligns our beaches with the best in the world and for us as Ugu South Coast Tourism this affords us a great oppor­ tunity within our destination sell.

For this reason, part of our branding not only includes our strong South Coast brand but we also incorporate the Blue Flag logo

I was listening to in my house.

I also thought Capital Radio deejays were larger than life itself and were the coolest ever. Many came and went over the years, but listeners will never forget the voices of Steve Bishop, Kevin Savage, Dave Guselli, Justice Ramohlola, Alan Khan, Tony Blewitt, Kenny Maistry, Treasure Tshabalala, Allan Pierce, and many others.

This was also at a time when you had no idea what your favourite deejay looked like. Some of my most favourite songs of all time today are songs I first heard on Capital Radio.

I can truthfully say my taste in music today was shaped by what I grew up listening to then. The station played almost all genres of popular music and that’s how I am even now. I have a favourite song in almost every genre and people are surprised by the play-list in

my car.

There are some songs they played that I have never heard again. One of them, which I have searched everywhere for, is a 1990 track by a South African group made up of three coloured girls, called the Syndicate Sisters. I can’t recall the title, but I think it was I’m Missing your Love.

I was devastated when the station closed in 1996 and I believe my life was never the same again. Some of those deejays simply vanished while others moved on to other things.

Alan Khan went to East Coast Radio, Kenny Maistry to Metro FM and Justice Ramohlola can still be heard on Radio 2000 on the breakfast show.

I’m pretty sure Springbok Radio’s loyal listeners know the pain I’m talking about as they also witnessed their radio station close in 1985.

Today only a few radio deejays have that captivating star personality that draws you in. I now mostly listen to talk radio stations and local community radio to keep up with what’s going on around me.

The days of quality radio and good music are gone forever and we are left with TV and its repeat programming.

It was interesting that the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa, who drive the Blue Flag programme are soon to introduce another brand geared towards the hospitality industry.

Called the Green Key Programme, this in­ itiative will set standards for the accommo­

dation providers to have environmentally acceptable operations and properties which in my opinion is the way to go.

So as summer hits our shores with our blue seas beckoning and beach flags flying it is an optimistic start towards our busiest season of the year.

Feeling blue has a far more positive con­ notation here in the paradise of the Zulu kingdom.

Bultrug­walvisse, verhoogkunstenaars van die see FEVER

ANDAT ek kan onthou, beskou ek walvisse as fassinerende diere. Die belangstelling is in my laerskooljare aangehelp met die lees van Herman Melville se epiese verhaal oor die wit walvis Moby Dick.

Hier langs die Suidkus van KZN is walvisse natuurlik volop in sekere tye van die jaar, meesal tussen Mei en November, en ek word nog steeds opgewonde wanneer ‘n walvis of walvisse in ‘n groep hul sterte bokant die water klap, vertikaal halflyf uit die water opstyg, of spronge heeltemal uit die water uit gee.

Met elke waarneming van ‘n walvis oor die jare was en is daar ‘n opwellende verwensing van die Japanners wat nog steeds jag maak op hierdie diere. Dit ten spyte van streng internasionale bewaringsmaatreëls, met die verskoning dat dit gedoen word om wetenskaplike navorsingsredes.

Die pektorale of borsfinne is lank en slank en die stertvinne is breed met knopperige rante. Hulle het twee luggate. ‘n Volwasse bultrug-walvis word tussen 11.5 en 15 meter lank, en weeg tussen 25 en dertig ton. Soos met an-

FORMER Port Shepstone High School pupil, TV personality, author and producer, Msizi E. Nkosi, invites the South Coast community to the launch of his book, I’m a Different Mess Than I was Yesterday at St Michaels Sands Hotel and Restaurant on 5 November at 12pm. Entry is R100 per person.

Nkosi said the book tells of his life as a young boy from Harding and how it spiraled out of control. It tells of his alcohol addiction that began when he was young, going through to his life in Johannesburg where he one day

found himself lying on the street, his near-death experience and waking up in hospital after falling into a coma.

Nkosi said his book was inspired by his life experiences.

“What inspired me to write the book is my near-death experience that changed my life. I was in a coma and doctors thought I was not going to make it.

“I lost my memory for a while, and during my recovery I had mixed emotions that I couldn’t verbally express.

“I then decided to express myself by diary entries, which led to the book.

“Writing the book was part of my healing process, which I think might help other people going through a sim-

A single blood donation can equal three gifts of life, as nearly every blood donation is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

The majority of transfusions are given to: • women who haemorrhage as a complication of pregnancy; • children with severe anaemia; • accident victims; and • surgical and cancer patients.

By donating blood you make a difference.

Who can donate blood?

Anyone who is over 17, weighs at least 50 kilograms and who has not donated blood in the preceding 56 days, who is healthy, not anaemic, not on certain types of medication, or whose social behaviour

does not place them at an increased risk of transmitting the HI-virus or a hepatitis virus. People who have recently travelled to malaria areas are usually also excluded.

Before you can donate blood, you will be asked about your lifestyle, personal details and medical history. These questions are asked

to make sure that it is medically safe for you to donate blood and that the person who receives your blood, will not be harmed in any way.

A finger prick test is done to determine your haemoglobin levels and your blood pressure and pulse rate will also be checked. If everything is in order, you will donate

about 480ml of blood, which will take between six and 10 minutes.

The average person contains about five litres of blood, which is continuously replaced. Donating blood is thus not usually a problem.

A ‘gradient braking’ function assists drivers with maintaining speed on difficult down hills – an especially useful safety ben­ efit when towing. A fast­acting limited slip differential is ideal in this regard too (and also when driving on low traction surfaces), and remains a feature of all models.

The combined fuel consumption figure for models with this engine is 9.5 l/100 km, CO2 is 249 g/km. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.4 seconds with a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Buyers have a choice of either a six speed automatic transmis­ sion with manual selection mode and grade braking or a six speed manual. All models have a 76 litre fuel tank.

LTZ models are available with optional four wheel drive with low range, which is the default set­up on the Z71. Changing be­ tween the two­high, four­high, and four­ low drive modes is just a turn of a dial away.

Brakes are equipped with four channel ABS with electronic Brake Force Distribu­ tion on all models. Brakes are 300 mm ven­ tilated discs in front and 295 mm discs at the rear.

The new Trailblazer is now fitted with an all new Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system. The new EPS system features Ac­ tive Pull and Smooth Road Shake Compen­ sation which all add to a smoother more re­ fined driving experience.

Active Pull Compensation constantly measures steering wheel torque being ap­ plied by the driver to maintain the vehicle’s path. When the software detects extra ef­ fort being used, the steering assist motor adds torque in the proper direction to pre­ vent the driver from having to make correc­ tions to keep the vehicle on course. The torque assistance makes steering easier thus reducing driver fatigue and effort.

The Chevrolet face has become a famil­ iar one on South African roads and the Trail­ blazer’s genes are very much apparent. The trademark ‘bowtie bar’ is now wider. Upper and lower grille sections now run the full width of the nose and have a series of bold­ er, horizontal, slats. Maximum visibility is ensured thanks to daylight running lights ­ which are of the powerful light­emitting di­ ode (LED) type in the case of the LTZ. The new bonnet has sleeker contours on the leading edge.

Wider tyres (255mm width compared to 245 previously) on new 17­inch wheels are fitted to LT derivatives and give it a more purposeful stance, while LTZ versions re­ main on 18­inch wheels with a glossy black design for the Z71. Tyre size is unchanged

at 265/60.

Inside, the trailblazer boasts a newly de­ signed dashboard and front console with a contemporary upmarket feel, enhanced by soft­touch materials and contrast stitch­ ing.

The Trailblazer is well suited to both the urban commute as well as long cross coun­ try adventures. It has all the comfort and convenience features expected from a luxu­ ry SUV of this size including no fewer than five points for charging devices and eight cup holders.

A unique feature of the Trailblazer is the provision of adjustable air conditioning for passengers in all three rows.

Fold­flat third row seating is also a key defining feature of this thoughtfully de­ signed family SUV. The new Trailblazer offers a more hush­ ed ambience in the cabin thanks to a revised sound­deadening package and a more pre­ mium look and feel has been achieved with more widespread use of soft­touch materi­ als and updated satellite controls on the leather­rimmed steering wheel. Leather upholstery is fitted as standard irrespective of the model.

Safety equipment across the range still includes ABS with EBD, PBA (Panic Brake Assist), HBFA (Hydraulic Brake Fade As­ sist), seven airbags (including full­length curtain airbags) ­ the Trailblazer also picks up a driver’s knee airbag for added protec­ tion, pre­tensioning seatbelts, ISOFIX child seat anchors and front park assist.

LTZ models benefit from the addition of Stabilitrak electronic stability/traction control, HDC (Hill Descent Control), and TSC (Trailer Sway Control). A rear mounted camera parking assistance system with cross traffic alert is also fitted.

Technology added to LTZ models for the 2017 model year are forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert and tyre pres­ sure monitoring; giving it one of the most comprehensive driver aid packages availa­ ble at this level.

HE battle for the 2016 Car of the Year saw 12 of the top vehicles in South Africa, voted by the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ), compete for the coveted title.

It came down to the wire for the 12 finalists at a gala event Johannesburg.

For the first time in the competition, the first and second runners-up were

revealed.

Each of the 12 contenders were put through stringent testing by 27 jury members during a two-day evaluation process earlier in February at the Gerotek test facility just outside Pretoria.

The Volvo XC90 has been crowned the 2016 SA Car of the Year.

Volvo South Africa managing director, Greg Maruszewski, said: “We

are absolutely delighted with our victory. With the all-new XC90 we are not only rewriting the rules of a post-modern luxury driving experience, but reinventing our brand as well.

“Our ethos, ‘Made by Sweden’, expresses our intrinsic Scandinavian roots, love for people, heritage and attitude to building some of the world’s most desirable - and safest - luxury ve-

hicles.

“The all-new XC90 follows in the footsteps of the Volvo S40, which received the coveted award in 2005,” said Maruszewski.

ORK to develop a school’s golf league on the South Coast is in full swing and more children from all schools and backgrounds are being sought.

Pupils from Suid-Natal Primêr are already into the swing of things as they have started with coaching clinics provided by Petrus Ferreira, father of Simoné Ferreira, who is making great strides in the golfing world.

Last Thursday they met at the Port Shepstone Country Club. Ferreira reminds all primary schools in the Ugu district to contact him about getting their pupils involved and pupils from

township and rural schools are encouraged to take part.

Coaching is free and the only fee payable once a year is R50 for use of the greens.

“Let us strive to together to uplift our younger generation that soon will become ambassadors in the sport of golf,” said Ferreira.
