O arrests have been made after the ANC councillor, Thembinkosi “Commando” Zoleka, was shot a week ago at his home in Margate last Thursday, but police said investigations are continuing.

Its alleged the suspect went into Zoleka’s bedroom when he was sleeping and shot him. At the time his wife and children were doing homework in the dining room.

A statement sent out by ANC provincial spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli said the attack is “very sketchy”.

Ntuli said they are saddened and shocked about the killing of Commando, an activist, who was recently elected as a member of the ANC Lower South Coast region, REC Working Committee member and a Proportional Representation councillor in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

“The passing of Zoleka will leave a void in the ranks of the ANC, the alliance and the democratic movement in general, which won’t be easy to fill,” said Ntuli.

On Tuesday local ANC councillors and ANC leadership in the region visited Zoleka’s home to pay tribute to the family.

Regional chair Mzwandile Mkwanazi said they are saddened by the killing of Commando as he was a prominent leader in many spheres.

Mkwanazi said Commando was a a former chair for Sadtu in the region and president of the schools council.

He said Commando was an intellectual and as the ANC they ask the public to stop speculating about what happened.

Mkhwanazi urged the public not to interfere with investigations.

“We want the law to handle the case as it is very dangerous to speculate and misdirect information,” said Mkhwanazi.

“Commando was a humble man who only lived by the ANC and who

Mkhwanazi said they also just learnt that Commando comes from Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s family, which is something he had never mentioned to anyone.

“He was the type of person who never wanted recognition, but lived for the revolution,” said Mkhwanazi.

Zoleka’s family was contacted for comment, but no comment was received as the family is still in shock and busy with the funeral arrangements.

A memorial service will be held at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre today at 9am.

He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment and was declared unfit to possess a firearm by the court.

The case was investigated by Detective Sergeant Beautus Cele of the Port Shep­ stone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS).

“She was too terrified to do anything because the man, who was supposed to care for her and protect her, had repeatedly violated her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone of his reprehensible be­ haviour,” said police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum.

“She eventually built up enough cour­ age and confided in her best friend and a close relative that from 1 February, 2014 until 1 June, 2014, her father had repeated­

ly raped her,” he added.

The matter was reported to the Port Shepstone SAPS for investigation and the father was immediately arrested and de­ tained on a charge of rape.

He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrates Court and the case was escalated to the Regional Court for trial and the subsequent conviction and sen­ tencing. ­ Supplied.

The passenger of one of the vehicles sustained serious injuries and had to be extricated from the car.

“She was stabilised and transported to a nearby hospital,” said Belinda Catchpole of Kwazulu Private Ambulance.

Alleged shooting at primary school CANDYCE KRISHNA >>candyce.krishna@media24.com WHEN a parent dropped her children off at a school on Wednesday morning, the last thing she expected to see was police vehicles and hear that armed men had es­ caped through the school’s grounds.

“When I got there, police were ques­

tioning a man and it looked to me like he was explaining to police where he saw these men escape,” said the parent who wants to remain anonymous.

“I had no idea what was going on, but the school assured me that the children were safe.”

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant­Colo­ nel Zandra Wiid said an investigation into the allegations is under way.

“Police responded to a report of an alleged shoot­ ing at a primary school,” she said.

The parent said while

driving on the main Harding Road, she saw a white sedan with a blue light with two male occupants.

“They then chased three suspects on foot, who then allegedly jumped over a fence and entered the school yard,” said Wiid.

Shots were also heard and the Port Shepstone Crime Prevention Unit mem­ bers and K9 members responded.

By the time they arrived there were no sign of the suspects or the white vehicle.

“We are currently looking into these al­ legations. Anyone who witnessed this can contact the Port Shepstone police on 10111,” said Wiid.

A 30-YEAR-OLD man appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of fraud.

Home Affairs official, Nobert Masuku (30), was arrested on Monday after accepting R1 500 from a foreign national in exchange for a birth certificate at Park Rynie Home Affairs office.

The case was remanded until 6 December for further investigation. He was granted bail of R2 000 by the court.

The foreign national was also ar-

rested and appeared with Masaku.

However, the state opted not to proceed with the prosecution against the second accused.

“It is alleged that the official attended to a foreign national at the Park Rynie Home Affairs offices in January 2014 and provided him with a fraudulent birth certificate in exchange for payment of R1 500,” said police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum.

collection by a South African citizen, who had previously applied for late registration of birth.

When the foreign national asked about obtaining a South African identity book, the official informed him that he could get one for between R3 500 and R4 000, but he did not follow up on this inquiry.

Subsequently, the foreign national visited the Home Affairs offices in Isipingo and applied for a South African identity document.

His application was processed

and he was asked to call again to collect his identity book, however, Home Affairs investigators discovered that the fingerprints of the applicant for the birth certificate differed from those of the applicant for the identity book.

He then identified the Park Rynie Home Affairs official as the one who sold him the birth certificate.

“They knew each other previously as they had attended the same church,” said Pandarum.

HERE have been many assumptions and theories why the new Ray Nkonyeni Municipality logo is taking so long to be finalised.

It has come to Fever’s attention that the reason for the delay could be that the name of the new municipality was supposed to be spelt “Rey”, not “Ray”.

The late Ray, or Rey Nkonyeni, was an anti-apartheid activist and an ANC member from Gamalakhe and he was

Peggy had not replied to questions sent to her in connection with the spelling of his name at the time of going to press, but a family member, who is not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed to Fever that the correct spelling of Nkonyeni’s name was Rey, not Ray. In a media briefing in October, municipal manager Max Mbili said the logo will be presented to council for approval this month. He said once that had taken place, the logo will then be made public in the second half of November.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesperson Simon April said the allegation of the delay is now known to the municipality.

“All one can say is that the delay is as a result of what was presented at the media briefing. The name of the municipality has been finalised and Gazetted and is therefore official. It is anticipated that the logo and colours will be finalised before the end of the year,” said April.

Owner unaware of theft, but police recover stolen goods A HOMEOWNER was shocked, and also relieved when he was notified by a Port Shepstone police officer that his house had been broken into while he was away, but that his stolen property had been recovered.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said last Friday Warrant Officer Patrick Gosling and Johan Zandberg were driving in the Port Shepstone CBD at 10am when they saw two men pushing a trolley loaded with items.

When they stopped them they and could not prove ownership of the items.

Wiid said after arresting the two men, they investigated and it was revealed the two had robbed a house in Rathbonville Road, Oslo Beach.

However, with the help of the Department of Home Affairs, they were able to trace the owner.

“In the trolley was a Plasma TV, a 32-inch TV, remote, cables and six speakers,” said Wiid.

Nehawu members from Esayidi colleges in the district joined a march in Pietermaritzburg last Thursday in support of the same demands they had submitted to the college Rector, Dr Sipho Nzimande last Tuesday.

Yolanda Khumalo of the local Nehawu branch leadership at the Esayidi central office said the college rector received a response the same day the memorandum was sent to head office.

Khumalo said Feroz Patel, the department’s director general, said the college should act fast on the demands of the staff.

Khumalo forwarded the Fever a copy of an email sent to the rector, which stated that it must be noted that the Department of Higher Education and Training has not decreased any funding for 2017 compared to 2016 therefore all staff paid through Department of Higher Education and Training will continue to be employed with no reduction in staff.

In the email it was also mentioned that the college head acts on the memo demands on the condition of service for college employed employees, decreases in enrolment due to the end of projects such as Seta, NSF and other third stream funding, or the exhaustion of the college.

Khumalo has also confirmed that students have not been affected as only Nehawu staff picketed the rest of the staff were in college continuing with studies and examinations.

HE Democratic Alliance Ugu South Constituency said it was pleased with the recent announcement from Sanral that midline barriers, on the R61 near the IzotshaShelly beach off-ramp, will be erected.

“We have received a copy of Ravi Ronny’s response to the issue. We are content that in addition to the announcement it sets out firm timelines for the erection of temporary barriers by the start of this December’s holiday season and permanent cable barriers by the first half of 2017,” said Dr Rishigen Viranna MPL, Democratic Alliance, Constituency Head: Ugu South.

In the 16 June issue, the Fever carried a story (Roads agency to act on illegal U-turns), where Sanral eastern region manager at the time, Logashri Sewnarain, said that a contractor will be appointed in November to re-con-

figure the current lanes and erect barriers.

A few weeks ago, the DA initiated a petition to have barriers installed at the off-ramp, to prevent illegal u-turning as thousands of lives have been lost on that section of the freeway.

The petition attracted almost 1 000 signatures before Sanral jumped in and made the announcement.

“On behalf of the entire DA Ugu South Constituency, we would like to thank the 1 000 South Coast residents who signed our petition in just over a week,” he said.

“We also thank the various civic organisations, including Anthony Hooper from Hibiscus Coast Seconds, for partnering with us in encouraging people to sign the petition,” added Viranna.

He said the battle, however, was not over.

“We will now shift our focus to monitoring the implementation of the

Convenience store at garage robbed A MARBURG garage was robbed by six armed men on Wednesday morning.

The men went into the convenience store at Fairways BP with firearms and took a small amount of cash from one of the tills. They then fled on foot.

“It is alleged that at 4.35am a group

of six males, armed with hand guns, went to a convenience store at a petrol station in Marburg,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

MARGATE resident says she is fed up with the property next to her home being used as a dumping ground.

Maretha Els claims it is also a home to vagrants and snakes and she has had no joy from the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) in getting the plot in Ilala Road, Ramsgate cleared.

“People have dumped old kitchen cabinets and garden rubble. There are snakes on the property and nobody is willing to help get the plot cleared,” she said.

In addition to that the land also poses a security threat.

“There is no security around the stand.

The overgrown bush is a convenient place for burglars to hide.”

Els wrote to the RNM in September requesting that the plot be cleared, but nothing has been done in this regard.

In addition the woman also has to bear a high-decibel noise at odd hours every day.

“It sounds like a bandsaw, but I can’t determine where the noise is coming from because the plot next to me blocks everything,” she said.

Last week Els called the SAPS at 4am to assist her in finding out where the noise was coming from.

“The officers agreed that nobody can live or even sleep in such a racket, but they have no idea where it could be coming from,” said Els. The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality was contacted for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.

A PROPERTY owner in Melville wants to know why the municipality has billed him R30 000 for water when he doesn’t have access to any.

The man bought the land a few years ago, and built a house on it in 2010, however, the property has never been connected to a water meter.

He says he has been using drums to store water and sometimes makes use of his neighbour’s water.

In the past two years the man has been back and forth to the municipal offices asking them to connect his water and install a water meter so he can be billed and pay for water.

“When I went to the municipal offices they told me I already have an account with them, which has an outstanding balance of R30 000.

“The lady I spoke to told me they can’t connect a water meter before I pay the outstanding amount.”

He said he spoke to the municipal manager about the alleged outstanding amount, and asked that the municipality connect his property to water.

“When I spoke to the manager he told me that technicians would install a meter, however he never said what is going to happen about the outstanding balance.”

He said eventually he was told to pay R500 towards the outstanding amount.

“I made the arrangement and made only one payment,” he said.

He says he doesn’t not know what the municipality is charging him for and he has now decided to sell the property if the municipality doesn’t install a meter and connect him to a water supply.

Ugu District Municipality spokesperson France Zama said the municipality will be investigating the allegations and a report with factual findings will be communicated.

“The municipality will also action corrective measures where necessary,” said Zama.

The competition was called “I’m an engineer” and schools had to design and build an ecofriendly house, with the best model going through to the next round.

Judges from Durban University of Technology chose Olwandle’s project as the winner.

ILMMAKER Senzo Zindela is excited that one of his films is in the final stages of preproduction.

The film is about rhino poaching and aims to create awareness about the crisis and spread the message that rhinos have to be saved before they become extinct.

Local filmmaker’s movie in final preproduction stage Zindela will also be contributing to anti-poaching campaigns.

“I have been through it all, survived against all odds. I have had lots of challenges, all doors were closed and I was forced to think out of the box and use my entrepreneurial skills to come up with a breakthrough strategy,” said Zindela.

He said he has always been passionate about producing entertaining films.

“In 2008 I wrote a science fiction story titled The Dissolver. It intimidated most South African producers because of its budget. I kept knocking on relevant doors, but all in vain until I met Tendeka Matatu in July 2008, the producer of Jerusalem.

“Tendeka didn’t give me money, but said words that have stuck with me since - ‘South Africa needs creative writers like you, it is the only way our country will be respected in the film in-

dustry’.”

Zindela said since then he decided to produce his own films because every producer he met was intimidated by them due to their budget.

Zindela is now producing a film Red Cargo - with a Thailand company, which stars a Zulu warrior.

“The Thai team I am working with on this project are the experts behind The Protector, Onk Bak, the Sequel starring Tony Jaa.

“I am preparing for the actual production [of the rhino movie], which is expected to begin in May 2017,” said Zindela.

He flew to Nigeria to attend the Africa International Film Festival that finishes on 21 November, with the aim of promoting the film and getting African contributors and distributors.

“My Thai partners are also organising a media briefing in Bangkok in December, which I will be attending.

TOTAL of 23 students from the Centre of Concern Sewing School in Margate were awarded on Thursday at the St Margaret’s Anglican Church.

Eight were first-year students who received certificates for completing the first stage of their course and 15 were second-year students who completed the full course.

Pat Moore from the school said they are happy to award their students.

She said many of them will be leav-

ing to start their own business, while others will be continuing with the course until the end of 2017.

The course is free as part of the church’s outreach project.

She said every year they enrol more than 25 students, teaching them basic sewing skills.

“We teach basic skills to unemployed and underprivileged men and women from the South Coast. Many are single parents or grandparents looking after orphans at home, so we equip them with basic skills in order for them to make a living by selling the clothes they make in their community,” said Moore.

Tourism gears up for holiday season IN preparation for year­end holiday fever, and as part of their mandate, the Development Team from Ugu South Coast Tourism recently conducted tourism awareness campaigns in rural areas in the Ugu District.

The first one was at Umuziwabantu at Vukuzakhe MPCC, KwaMachi on 3 November.

The second one took place on 10 November in Umdoni at Nkampula Hall, an area previous­ ly known as Vulamehlo.

Each session was attended by more than 80 people.

The tourism awareness campaigns have proved to be a dream come true for many as it brings solutions to emerging businesses and to those who want to start tourism­related businesses, in addition to community mem­ bers who gain knowledge.

The success of these campaigns is largely due to the commitment of stakeholders and through the dedication of ward councillors, who assist by inviting the community, and the booking of venues.

Ugu South Coast Tourism was accompa­ nied by Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and the KZN

Coast Municipality to make the classes possible.

Moore thanked the sponsors for their support and invited volunteers to join them.

need for knowledge was made evident by the extensive number of questions that arose,” he said.

“Through the tourism awareness cam­ paigns, more people are realising that tourism is everyone’s business, no matter who they are or where they come from.

“These campaigns thus play a big role in taking the information to people who never thought they would, or could, ever benefit from the tourism industry or how they could contribute to it,” says Mhlongo.

SRI Sathya Sai Baba devotees are invited to celebrate the spiritual teacher’s 91st birthday at the Sai Centre in Marburg next week.

Sathya Sai Baba was one of the most revered spiritual teachers in the world. He is also known as Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Sai Baba, Swami, Bhagavan or simply as “Baba” to millions of people.

His followers come from all faiths and races and meet regularly for devotional singing, to study his teachings, and to engage in service activities in order to practice his message

of love and peace to unite all mankind.

On 28 March, 2011, Sai Baba was admitted to hospital following respiration-related problems.

After nearly a month of hospitalisation, he died on 24 April, 2011, aged 84.

The Sathya Sai Organisation was founded by Sathya Sai Baba to enable members to undertake service activities as a means to spiritual advancement and has over 1 200 Sathya Sai Centres (branches) in 126 countries.

UGU BEAT Let the games begin ­ support called for

JUSTIN MACKRORY: CEO SOUTH COAST TOURISM

Sustaining tourism on the South Coast THIS week I am attending the Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa’s (Retosa) conference on sustainable tour­ ism in Johannesburg which I expect will be very informative with a number of SADC case studies in community based tourism being presented to highlight gains, pitfalls and practical recommendations.

Here in the Ugu District we have been in­ volved in programmes geared towards com­ munity orientated rural projects which in due course will become prominent features within our diverse and rich tourism land­ scape.

Already the Nyandezulu initiative is up and running and the Wild 2 South Coast Walk has within its offering inclusion of the KwaNzimakwe area which we anticipate will become a stand­ alone sub destination in our hinterland. In a peri­urban context, there are moves to establish the Gamalakhe Heritage Park, which if fused to other expe­ riences, offerings and tours in the immedi­ ate area, will provide our visitors with excel­ lent insights into our cultural heritage and contemporary satellite town lifestyle.

The Kwa Xolo Caves initiative, once clear in terms of its ownership and business mod­ el will be a value adding element to the

strong beach sell we enjoy.

Further from the coast at Mount Nebo near Harding, there are plans to expand on the excellent entertainment centre there to include adventure and adrenaline experien­ ces within a forest and agri­eco tourism con­ text. Feasibilities are being conducted and hopefully early in 2017 the attraction will have a clear way forward in its develop­ ment.

In the longer term the proposed Um­ zumbe River Trail will provide outdoor en­ thusiasts with a unique trail with an au­ thentic Zulu hosting element along about a 65 km route from the coast and inland to the rolling hills of Umzumbe.

The intention of all these initiatives is to establish product platforms from which di­ rect economic benefit can accrue to local residents and entrepreneurs.

Gone are the days of extended subsidies for product development initiatives and as such, Ugu South Coast Tourism will ensure that responsible operational models are put in place to back the objectives of sus­ tainable tourism and afford people oppor­ tunity to derive appropriate livelihoods from our tourism and leisure sector.

So going forward, the magnetism of our beaches and ocean will remain our primary drawcard, however, the programmes away from the coast will reinforce the need to di­ versify our appeal to meet a much broader set of market niches and needs that are emerging.

Once this has been achieved then I am confident that our wonderful destination can be as complete as possible.

IN 22 days time Ugu District will host the biggest youth sport tournament in the province, the Salga KZN-DSR Games 2016 and the district mayor, Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza calls for the community to support these games by rallying behind our athletes.

The Ugu District Community is invited to be part of this sports spectacular, which will begin with the official opening ceremony at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on 8 December.

The starting whistle will blow on 9 December where Ugu will be competing against nine district municipalities and one metro for the number one spot in 16 sporting codes.

The estimated number of over 4 000 participants will be competing in athletics, basketball, boxing, chess, cricket, dance, golf, indigenous games, karate, netball, rugby, soccer, swimming, tennis, table tennis and volleyball.

Working with local sport federations, schools and municipalities under the district, we unearthed talent to represent the district in the various disciplines and training camps for the chosen squads.

I have been tapping her on the nose, but she seems to be getting worse. I love her to bits, but I am terrified that she might grow into an aggressive adult. What should I do?

Fran Simons Hi Fran, Your concerns are well­founded. Ag­ gression in such a powerful breed would be a very serious concern. However, with early socialisation and proper gentle but firm and consistent training Rottweilers can generally make loyal and devoted pets. It is essential to desensitise any puppy to being touched, handled and examined. Punishing a dog for growling can be dangerous for many reasons.

Punishing a dog for growling (in your case, by tapping on the nose) can be dangerous because instead of associat­ ing the punishment with the problem behaviour the dog might mistakenly at­ tribute it to the action that preceded the punishment, in your case to the paws being dried. In your scenario the out­ come of such a mistake would likely be not only self­defeating but obviously very dangerous.

Growling is a response to a feeling of insecurity or a perceived threat in a par­ ticular situation. In communication be­ tween dogs the response to this would be a signal of reassurance from the oth­ er dog that she or he can be trusted. This would be communicated by calming signals (see Calming Signals, www.dog­ boxtrainingschool.co.za). In the event of an aggressive display or a punishing retaliation, depending on the force ex­ hibited and other variables, the dog will learn to dispense with the warning and deliver a bite, or might start cringing and weeing.

Owners often mistake this cringing fear behaviour as a submissive accept­ ance of the owner’s dominant role, but it is really a sign of learned helplessness.

There is a danger that repressed aggres­ sion, which can result from uninformed aversive training methods, might mani­ fest later in a more violent response as the dogs perception of threats is inter­

preted as if her survival is at stake. .

The solution is to establish coping methods and use impulse­control exer­ cises to build trust and communication skills between the two species. Consist­ ent punishment­free training can in­ grain new compatible behaviours and develop a strong bond of trust and re­ spect.

An early start, when the puppy’s brain is like a lump of plasticine ready for moulding is the easiest and most ef­ fective route. Dogs and other species learn quickly and retain strong memo­ ries, whether good or bad. What is cru­ cial is that this moulding is correctly done.

Before ending I must add that Rot­ tie’s have a tendency to “grumble” when petted.

This is in the manner of a cat purring, however it is important that the body language and circumstances inform you if this is the case or not. Some new own­ ers may back­off when experiencing this, and the Rottie may learn that a grumbly growl allows them to have their way.

THE recent rains come as a very welcome relief. I don’t mind even it rains for two weeks straight because I know even that wouldn't be enough to bring things back to normal and satisfy the water shortage.

When I visited my brother-in-law in Bronkhorstspruit two months ago the situation was very bad on his farm.

A bit of rain has come, but he will never be able to recover what he has already spent on transporting water for his animals to drink.

No wonder in the news last week they said more are drowning in debt they will never be able to repay, forcing them to put their farms up for sale.

A single farmer may be responsible for up to 30 labourers, who in turn may have eight dependants, which shows a single farmer can be responsible for up to 240 people or even three times that number in some cases.

Let us all do our bit to conserve water and also put pressure on the municipality when they slack off and don’t repair leaks.

WHAT is it that we must not know so as to focus on these chronological events that are, unfortunately, failing to take the desired form of the Arab Spring?

My limited understanding indicates that the state consists of the executive, Parliament and the judiciary.

By implication, therefore, state capture would refer to an absolute malfunctioning of these three arms of the state.

However, as I went through the State of Capture report, I realised that the “capture” might be taking place in the executive arm only and therefore the diagnosis of the situation is misplaced and unfairly exaggerated.

Should we not say the government/ executive capture?

I am of the view that if we are to investigate fairly a capture of our sovereignty then we must ask the correct questions.

This is the class struggle at its best because when the dust has settled only one class will secure a temporal victory against the other and we, the masses, and the working class, shall remain locked below the poverty line.

China malls do a roaring trade DURING a recent trip to Johannesburg, I visited a few Chinese malls.

There are quite a few huge China Malls within a five-kilometre radius in the Crown Mines area in Johannesburg.

What astounded me was that these malls were extremely busy, doing very good business. However, what concerned me was that all the stores I visit-

FRIFORUM Margate het onlangs sy vierde Algemene Jaarvergadering by die Margatebuiteklub gehou, en ‘n nuwe bestuur vir die komende jaar gekies. Uit die voorsitter, Wessel Pretorius, se jaarverslag het dit geblyk dat daar veral agter die skerms gewerk is om die uitdagings aan die Suidkus aan te pak.

Wessel het beklemtoon dit is juis as gevolg van hierdie probleme dat daar ‘n solidariteit onder gemeenskappe ontstaan het, en Afriforum kan ‘n bydrae lewer om te help bou aan ‘n meer positiewe gemeenskap waarin die regte van alle Suid-Afrikaners beskerm word.

Verskeie sake is in die verslag uitgelig, onder meer die volgende: • Probleme met dienslewering vanweë swak munisipale bestuur en -administrasie.

• Die Ray Nkonyeni-munisipaliteit se traagheid om op te tree teen onwettige elektriese verbindings in Masinenge en Mkholombe, asook die stadige herstel van slaggate.

• Die Ugu-munisipaliteit se onvermoë om met ‘n werkbare plan van aksie vorendag te kom om ‘n nuwe waterpyp-infrastruktuur vir die dorpe te vestig.

• Verskeie besoedelingskwessies, waaronder onwettige storting van huishoudelike, tuin- en bou-afval, en riool wat in die veld en deur die stormwaterstelsel in strome en riviere beland, is gerapporteer. Margate se hoof-

Hierdie rubriek is gans te klein om te probeer skryf oor die redes wat hier in die Watergat bespreek is vir die stand van ons rugby. Van ‘n vrot bestuur en afrigters tot verkeerde keuses en politiek. Ons laat dit dus net daar.

Die ligpunt is die onlangse fantastiese vertonings van die Protea-krieketspan. Skielik is daar diepte, en tensy die Aussies ver benede standaard is, is daar hoop vir die toekoms. Selfs sonder Dale Steyn, wat lyk my nou verby sy beste is, en AB de Villiers, het die span fantastiese vertonings gelewer.

Wessel Pretorius het ‘n ernstige beroep op die publiek gedoen om die IDP-vergaderings saam met AfriForum by te woon, en hy het lede daaraan herinner aan die Geloftefees op 16 Desemver op die Ramsgate-strand.

Lede is ook in kennis gestel dat ‘n jeugtak vanjaar begin gaan word: voornemende lede moet tussen 18 en 35 jaar oud wees, en kan gratis aansluit. Die voorsitter het die uittredende bestuurslede bedank vir hul harde werk, en sowel die nuutverkose as herkose lede gelukgewens. Die nuwe bestuur is soos volg: Voorsitter – Wessel Pretorius. Konflik DIT is die bekende Mahatma Ghandi, die groot vredemaker van Indië wat gesê het dat die beginsel van “’n oog vir ‘n oog,” die hele wêreld blind sal maak.

Hy het dit gesê teen die agtergrond van die konflik in wat destyds nog Indië was en wat later Indië en Pakistan geword het. Konflik word soms beskryf as wrywing of opposisie wat ontstaan as gevolg van werklike of vermeende verskille of onversoenbare idees oor geld, seks, kinders grootmaak, ensomeer.

Ons gedagtes, emosies, waardes en lewensgeskiedenis verskil van mekaar as mense. Dit maak dat ons dikwels teenoorgestelde standpunte van mekaar sal huldig, hetsy dit in die huwelik, kerk, werksplek of politiek is. Ons kan byvoorbeeld op ‘n Saterdagmiddag verskillende behoeftes hê in ons gesin. Die een wil rugby kyk en die ander wil gaan wafels eet.

Die oomblik wat ons teenoor mekaar te staan kom, is daar konflik. Kleiner konflikte word gewoonlik makliker

Dis natuurlik bedoel dat as jy weet van iets waaraan jy ‘n aandeel het, wat jou medemens grief.

Partykeer is mense maar net moeilik en verdra ons nie, omdat hulle self ‘n “apie op die skouer het” by wyse van spreke. Dit staan ook in Romeine 12:18: “As dit moontlik is, sover dit van julle afhang, leef in vrede met alle mense.”

Uiteindelik moet ons ons eie harte gereeld ondersoek. As daar onvergenoegdheid of frustrasie in my eie hart is, sal dit afgee in al my verhoudings. Wat leef in jou hart?

“Where’s the Fun” Local author releases new book >> Book unpacks cultural rites and rituals OMEGA MOAGI

UST as the title Amagugu Asendulo (meaning historical treasures) suggests, Port Shepstone author Irene Myingwa’s new book is an attempt to celebrate and restore the rich history of the African culture, particularly Nguni traditions in the face of modernisation.

The book is an anthropological expedition and unpacks cultural rites and rituals. These are used to comment and articulate on broader topics in the modern day in order to demonstrate how long-standing traditions have informed many Western norms, particularly religious ones, that are practiced in African societies today.

“God was there before Europeans came to Africa. With this book I wanted to eliminate the misconception that God, religion and the good values that came with Christianity were new to Africans.”

She said it is important to understand that African forefathers knew about God and praised Him in their own African way.

“Although they never had a Bible, they had their way of communicating with Him.” In the book Myingwa discusses rituals such as imbeleko, lobola, isithembu, umemulo and

umhlango. She encourages that these be preserved and continually used with Christianity to inform how African societies progress.

Myingwa says she believes the book might help in tackling some of the many social ills faced in modern African societies in more ways than religion can.

“I want to create awareness among the youth, especially about where they come from and so hope to influence their decision-making in their daily lives,” she says.

“We can use our traditions to promote ubuntu, chastity and all the other good values inherent in them to tackle social issues like HIV/Aids, parentless households, crime and other issues” The author is a mother of three, a pastor, motivational speaker and a teacher. The book is her eighth publication. She has published books that deal with similar topics to the recent book as well as poetry.

She has written praise poetry for Nelson Mandela, King Goodwill Zwelithini, Sizwe Mchunu and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor, Cynthia Mqwebu.

HE 16 Days of Activism For No Violence Against Women and Children begins next Thursday and there’s one message the Port Shepstone Family, Child and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit would like to echo in the community - “say no to abuse and do not accept excuses from the offenders. Report abuse and do not withdraw cases.”

Captain Kishor Giani of the FCS Unit said their mandate is to investigate, highlight and prevent cases of family violence, child protection and sexual offences.

“We do this through the investigation of criminal dockets, inquiries and outreach programmes,” he said.

On average 80 cases of domestic violence are reported a month.

“Victims normally stay in these relationships as there is no other means of financial support, where the offender is the breadwinner,” said Giani.

ness in general is a very complex issue and much more than being alone or isolated. “Loneliness has a very strong psychological component and also includes our perception about our situation or our view of ourselves in context with other people. Therefore it is not uncommon for people to feel at their loneliest surrounded by other people,” she said.

Dealing with loneliness implies that action is needed, not only from the people and community around the lonely person but also from the person themself.

Loneliness can range from a slight feeling of emptiness to a severe feeling of desolation.

Tips to keep busy: • Reach out to family that is far away.

• Become part of a religious group.

• Take up a hobby or becoming part of a reading club.

• Volunteer at a place where help is needed for example the SPCA, or a soup kitchen or at an old­age home or a Hospice. This can give back a sense of purpose or a feeling that a person is still needed.

Research have also shown that elderly people who are not visited at least twice a month by family is more likely to feel lonely.

“Family can take turns to visit the elderly in their family.”

“Asking the elderly to do small tasks for example looking after a pet, or watering plants, when you are away, has the potential to make them feel that they are still needed and purposeful.”

“People who are lonely seem to feel so trapped in their situation that it becomes a passive state of being. The two symptoms of depression, helplessness and hopelessness are strongly associated with loneliness,” said Venter.

“It is very important for the person to feel a sense of belonging, to feel that they are still needed or that they can still contribute something valuable.

Therefore losing a sense of purpose is often associated with loneliness,” she added.

Venter said the elderly often struggle with loneliness and that it is important for family make sure that their elderly is looked after physically and that they get the necessary treatment they need in order for them to not feel excluded and lonely.

“The elderly should also keep up with technology, so that they can stay in contact with family who live from them,” she said.

CHURCH crèche in Murchison is unhappy with the condition the children have to play under due to a septic tank overflow in its yard.

The Name of God Church, also used as a crèche during the week, has been

He said it is a great concern as the children have a graduation function coming up and they can’t have it outdoors because of the spill.

Ugu District Department of Health spokesperson Thabisile Ngcobo was contacted for comment and said the clinic had been provided with a septic tank system as an interim measure and a septic truck comes around when the septic tank is full to pump it out.

The clinic said recently, due to the recent heavy rains, the trucks could not come and that could be the cause of the sewage overflowing into the church yard.

Ngcobo said expansion of the septic tank is planned for next year.

“Children need to go outdoors and play, but because of that smelly and unhealthy water they can’t, it is really

unhealthy and unfair for them,” he said.

Archbishop Madlala said all he asks is for Ugu or for the sewerage department to redirect the pipe of these septic tanks so that they don’t to spill out in their yard.

Police search for rape and robbery suspect A 30-YEAR-OLD mother was asleep with her two young children when two men kicked open the door of her home in Ndwebu Ward, Umzumbe, in December 2014.

They threatened her with a knife and raped her.

The suspects then robbed her of money and two cellphones before fleeing.

One of them was allegedly attacked and killed by the community while the other left the area to evade arrest.

The Highflats SAPS registered a case of rape for investigation and investigators began their search for the two suspects.

Captain Devika Pillay of the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS) secured a warrant for the arrest of Siyanda Duncan Msomi (33).

Pillay appeals to anyone who knows the whereabouts of Msomi to contact her on 039 974 6552/3 or 039 688 7900.

They can also contact their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

This could be attributed to the fact that people steal the animals to eat over the festive season or sell to those looking for animals to slaughter for their festive season celebrations.

The new Tucson is built on a completely new platform that offers generous interior dimensions. There is an excellent exterior-to-interior dimension ratio, continuing the Hyundai tradition for highly efficient packaging.

Both derivatives are fitted with a sound system with a 3,8-inch display screen as standard equipment. A new seamless DAB+ digital radio with six audio speakers is standard across the Tucson range. Further connectivity is provided through USB and AUX connections for iPod in the centre console, or music can be streamed through a Bluetooth connection.

The introduction of new technologies means the All-New Tucson is one of the most comprehensively equipped vehicles in its segment when it comes to safety features. The Tucson has scored a full set of five stars in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP)

tests, with top ratings of 86% for adult occupant protection, and 85% for child occupant safety.

A number of passive safety features are included in the All-New Tucson. For occupants there are six airbags, including driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags throughout the range. Both derivatives have Isofix child seat anchors in the rear bench.

The new, stiffer structure for the 2016 Tucson has enabled Hyundai engineers to achieve significant gains in the suppression of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), making it one of the quietest and most refined cabins in the class. WO new Tucsons – both with turbocharged diesel engines – have been added to Hyundai’s compact SUV range that became a top-seller in its market segment in South Africa since the local launch of this model earlier in 2016.

The addition of the turbodiesel engines has increased the derivatives in Hyundai’s Tucson range to seven, including the 5 petrol derivatives available since the launch in March.

Originally launched in 2005, the Hyundai Tucson caught the attention of South Africa SUV buyers and became a firm top-seller in the segment for several years when it was followed its successor, the ix35, in 2009.

“The overall total of 56 408 first generation Tucson and ix35 sales is proof of the popularity of Hyundai’s SUV, and since the launch of the new Tucson earlier in 2016 we have sold an average of more than 600 units per month. That puts us firmly in the top position in this market segment,” says Stanley Anderson, sales and operations director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa.

“The Tucson turbodiesels – launched at a very competitive price and with a comprehensive standard package – will certainly add a further boost to Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s sales and to its positive brand image. It is a welcome expansion of our range at a time when our automotive market is under pressure.”

One of the turbodiesel derivatives – on the Executive specification level – is powered by a new 1,7-litre engine that conforms to Euro 6 regulations for clean emissions and delivers 85 kW maximum power at 4 000 r/min. and 280 Nm peak torque between 1 250 and 2 750 r/min.

Power is transferred to the front wheels via a sixspeed manual gearbox.

The other Tucson turbodiesel derivative is equipped with a full range of standard features at the Elite specification level and uses a 2-litre Euro 2 engine that delivers 131 kW maximum power at 4 000 r/min., and 400 Nm torque between 1750 and 2 750 r/min. A six-speed automatic transmission transfers power to the front wheels.

In between lies the Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Nu Elite, also with the 2-litre petrol engine and automatic 6-speed transmission, but with a high level of standard features. One step down in terms of standard features is the Hyundai Tucson 1.6 TGDi Executive, also with the new turbocharged 1,6-litre petrol engine, but with a manual 6-speed gearbox. The Executive offers a level of comfort and standard features that fits in between the Premium and Elite offerings.

The launch price of the new Tucson 1.7 Executive Turbodiesel (manual gearbox) is R439 900, while the Tucson R2.0 Elite (with an automatic gearbox) sells for R519 900.

The two turbodiesel engines take their place next to the naturally aspirated 2-litre petrol engine and turbocharged 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine that was introduced with the Tucson in March in South Africa.

The new Tucson 1.7 Executive Turbodiesel is built in Hyundai’s modern factory in the Czech Republic.

The 1,7-litre turbodiesel is paired with a smooth six-speed manual gearbox which drives the car through the front wheels.

The 2-litre diesel engine, in the Elite derivative that is imported from South Korea, is also equipped with a turbocharger that enables it to deal particularly well with the oxygen-starved Highveld and other high-lying and mountainous areas in South Africa.

It delivers 131 kW at 4 000 r/min., and its torque delivery peaks at an impressive 400 Nm

Junior golf training continues ANOTHER training session for junior golfers was held at Port Shepstone Country Club on Friday. Started nine weeks ago by Petrus Ferreira, the aim of the training is to nurture young talent and eventually form a junior golf league on the South Coast.

Grey skies did not dampen the spirits of the pupils as they learnt the basics, including alignment and the strength of the stroke.

“Getting to know your game around the greens is most important,” said Ferreira.

“Bring the children and let them try it out. As mentioned before, no fees are being charged, however, as soon as they get in to the swing of it and we feel they are course-ready, an entry fee of R60 and a yearly membership of R50 will be payable in the office at the country club.”
