Protesters stop demolition PROTESTERS in Glenhills were successful in their attempts to stop the demolition of houses and structures built illegally on land expropriated by the KwaDukuza Municipality on Thursday.

Protesters from the Happy Valley, Murugan’s Road and Top Shop areas, where the court order states majority of the illegal houses are situated, took to the streets at 5am. The angry residents burned tyres and trees and closed off roads into and out of the area with rocks and garbage refusing to allow the demolition, which commenced on Monday, to continue.

Protesters also demanded an audience with KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu however, Mthembu was not able to go to the area at the time.

Finally, some hours into the protesting the standoff between the protesters and municipal officials which was closely monitored by KwaDukuza SAPS and Crime Prevention officers came to an end with an agreement to halt the demolition until a meeting with mayor Mthembu on Wednesday, 12 October (today).

The municipality has agreed that they will not go ahead with demolishing the structures until the meeting where they hope a resolution will be found.

The protests gained mixed reactions from the rest of the community with some in support of the protesters while others were irked by the disruption to their daily routine, having to find alternate routes to enter and exit the area.

Commenting on a post on the Stanger Weekly Facebook page, Natasha Govender said: “I’m in full support of saving those houses. Some have spent their life savings on those buildings and for some this may be the only way they will be able to afford their own home. On that note, today’s protests was not on. People who bought the said land knew well in advance that trouble would be knocking on their doors soon.

Another resident, Pregasen Don Perumall felt it was a display of a united community fighting for their homes.

“This looks like a united community fighting for a common cause. It’s typical of the municipality not to be on their toes monitoring these so called illegal homes being built.

“Surely it wasn’t built overnight because they look like [the homes are] built out of blocks. The municipality should have demolished the first house and set a precedence to any future development. My solution is let the houses be, charge the homeowners for the property if they please [because] the municipality has already legally connected power and water to these houses.”

N eight-year-old girl was among the four people who were killed in a head-on colli-

sion on the N2 between Zinkwazi and KwaDukuza on Sunday evening.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics the force of the impact was so severe that it caused the vehi-

cles, a Toyota Corolla and a Hilux bakkie, to be mangled together.

IPSS Medical Rescue's paramedics together with KwaDukuza Fire and Emergency Services and EMRS had to work together to free and treat the victims.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, the male and female in the car were killed on impact and the Jaws of Life were used to free them and the four other injured victims from the wreckage.

“Sadly the eight-year-old child died due to extensive traumatic injuries sustained from the accident. Paramedics worked tirelessly to resuscitate the child, but sadly the child died despite resuscitation efforts.”

The fourth victim, a male from the bakkie, who was also critically injured, died in hospital.

At the time of going to press, the two victims who survived, a woman and child, remained in a critical condition in hospital.

Alleged rapists due back in court MAKHOSANDILE ZULU A 29-year-old man from the Nyathikazi area was arrested last Friday, 7 October, and charged with the rape of an 11-year-old girl.

He appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 10 October. He was remanded in custody and will make an application for bail on 17 October.

According to court documents, the rape allegedly took place in August at the victim’s home.

The victim was alone at home when the accused, a local shoemaker, visited her to pick up the victim’s big brother’s sandals which he had to repair.

After the victim had given the accused the sandals, he loitered around and eventually allegedly forced her into a room in which she alleges the accused raped her.

The victim was afraid to report the incident, but she eventually did.

In a separate incident, a 39-year-old wellknown man from Shakaville was arrested and charged with the rape of an 11-year-old girl.

According to court documents, the mother of the victim arrived home on 4 October and found that her daughter was missing.

On the following day, the mother made some enquiries about her daughter’s whereabouts before reporting her as missing to the police.

On Thursday afternoon, her son, the victim’s brother, spotted the child who had been missing for two days and he notified his mother about her whereabouts.

When the victim was found, she told her mother that she had been playing when the accused called her to his home where she alleges to have been sexually abused.

The victim further told her mother that the accused threatened her with violence and told her not tell anyone about the incident. She said that she stayed at the accused’s house for the two days she had been missing.

The accused is due back in court on 17 October.

Taxi owner dies after being shot MAKHOSANDILE ZULU

WADUKUZA taxi owner and member of the Stanger Taxi Association Vusi Mbeje, also known as Vusi Gasa, died in hospital late last Thursday after he and two others were shot earlier in the evening in Groutville.

“Three taxi owners were shot by two unknown suspects.

“They were taken to hospital

for medical attention.

“Later Vusi Mbeje succumbed to his injuries,” KZN SAPS spokesperson, lieutenant colonel Thulani Zwane said.

He said that charges of murder and attempted murder were opened at the KwaDukuza police station for investigation.

This comes after several other individuals within the local taxi industry have been fatally gunned

Speaking to the Weekly on Monday, the deceased’s relative Zakhele Gasa said the family is deeply saddened by the passing.

“He was everything to our family, all our hopes rested on him.

“We are even struggling with his funeral arrangements because something of this nature is something that he would take the lead with and ensure that it is done properly,” he said.

He described Vusi Gasa as a jovial person who loved children.

According to the relative, the deceased will be laid to rest in KwaMaphumulo.

Tablets for iLembe’s Amakhosi JYOTHI LALDAS THE newly-elected council of iLembe District Municipality handed over tablets to the region’s Amakhosi in an effort to enable the traditional leaders to perform their

duties efficiently and effectively.

District speaker Lucky Makhathini made the announcement at a special council sitting recently.

“It is important that public office bearers are treated the same and receive the same tools of trade as councillors and traditional leaders so we can work together to take this district forward. Amakhosi can now get council agendas and check their emails,” he said.

Traditional leaders were inaugurated into council in July 2014 in terms of Section 81 of the Systems Act. Thirty four Amakhosi representing six regions sit in on iLembe’s council meetings. This will ultimately result in traditional communities which were once lagging behind benefitting.

Taxi cab owner found dead MAKHOSANDILE ZULU A 20-year-old taxi cab owner from Indian Village who operated from the parking lot of a local supermarket, Darius Narsinuloo, was found dead by sand mining workers near a river in Mvoti last Thursday.

According to KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johannes Khoza, Narsinuloo was last seen on Tuesday, 4 October at 6.30pm and on the following day his family reported him missing to the police.

He said that Narsinuloo’s vehi-

cle, a sky blue Toyota Tazz with the registration NT 7701, has still not been recovered.

“The police are investigating a case of murder. We are appealing to members of the community who might have information about the incident to come forward and anyone who might have spotted the vehicle to please inform the police,” Khoza said.

According to a source who operates a taxicab from the same parking lot, Narsinuloo was hired by a female and a male client and that was the last time he was seen.

ANDENI SAPS station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ziningi Zulu received the Police Woman of the Year award for 2015/2016 at the glittering annual KZN SAPS Provincial Commissioners Excellence Awards held last Friday, 7 October, at the Umhlanga Coastlands Hotel.

She attributed her recognition to the collective efforts of her colleagues who she said have made her realise her passion for policing and that teamwork is key in their line of work.

“I would not have been bestowed with this award had it not been for all the members of the ILembe cluster. I would also like to thank members at the Mandeni station for the support that they have given me,” Zulu said.

An advocate for children and women’s rights, Zulu is also the Women’s Networking Champion in the iLembe Cluster.

“I’m a dedicated police officer who goes beyond the call of duty, which is to fight crime, but I encourage women empowerment within the iLembe cluster and in the communities by holding regular campaigns against the abuse of women and children. These campaigns are taken to schools as well. I and my colleagues also visit hospices, prisons and host events to remember and honour our fallen heroes within Mandeni SAPS and iLembe cluster,” she said.

Zulu said that being a police officer requires one to have good values, integrity, be selfless, be honest and be a committed individual.

“At certain times you are required to work under extremely unfavourable conditions, under pressure, long hours and still manage to achieve the desired results. Fighting crime is a continuous effort,” she said.

She joined the SAPS in 1994 and has steadily scaled up the ranks to leadership positions which include Strategic Officer – Facilitation in Organisation Development at the Provincial Office to Station Commander of Newark SAPS from 2009 till 2014 until being promot-

UNDUMBILI SAPS communications officer, Captain Gideon Mthethwa has commended Constable Bhekabakubo Mduduzi Madela (32) who is stationed in Sundumbili for efficiently compiling evidence and working diligently on two separate cas-

es which resulted in convictions.

Mthethwa said through Madela’s hard work Mbongiseni Pollen Undertaker Ngema (33) was convicted to 15 years’ imprisonment by the Eshowe Magistrate’s Court for murder and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

According to Mthethwa, Ngema had broken into the home of the deceased

and shot the deceased more than four times.

He said Ngema was later arrested by Madela.

In the second conviction which Mthethwa applauded the constable for his commitment and determination, Sibekezelo Ndimande, a 35-year-old female, was convicted to 10 years’ imprisonment by the Eshowe Magistrate’s Court for stabbing to murder a female victim sometime last year.

“Madela has been in service at SAPS for five years and he is one of our most dedicated members. He is setting a good example for younger police officials. These convictions help reduce crime and make our communities safer,” Mthethwa said.

WEEK ago, I walked out on to a stage in a theatre in Ferrara in northern Italy and got a huge fright.

The 18th-century opera theatre is incredibly beautiful and it was somewhat overwhelming looking up at the ornate balconies from the stage below. I felt I needed to burst into an aria to be worthy of standing there.

But that was not the reason I was breathless. The hall and five tiers of balconies were packed to capacity.

These people had come to hear a panel discussion on South Africa.

I was one of the participants in the discussion titled “South Africa — split between old privilege and the desire to reshape the future”.

I was astounded that the discussion on South Africa drew such a big audience when the world is currently seized with the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency, the aftermath of Brexit, terrorism and migration.

The host of the session, a journalist at Internazionale, asked about the outcome of our local government elections, the succession debate in the ANC, the student protests over university fees and the state of the economy.

Questions on these issues also came from the audience, made up of mostly students and readers of the magazine who were interested in the evolution of South Africa from our democratic breakthrough to where we are now — in a state of social and economic turbulence.

It made me exceptionally sad to speak about the state of our country on a global stage.

It felt unpatriotic to answer honestly about the failures of political leadership that had exacerbated the

economic and social problems created by the apartheid system.

I had a lump in my throat explaining why young people across the country are in a state of rebellion over university fees, with violent clashes at various campuses. It was difficult to have to state that we have essentially reached an impasse, with students digging in their heels on the issue of free education and the government and universities declaring that this would bankrupt the system.

I was saying this to a theatre full of young people whose minds were alive and searching, thanks to the success of their own education system.

I was also mindful that as frustrations were reaching boiling point back home, with university buildings and libraries being burnt, I was speaking in a town where the buildings, artworks and books have been preserved for centuries so that generations of people can soak in the history.

I longed to be able to say that South Africa was merely going through a bad patch and that it was a matter of time before we regained our stability.

But it was no secret that the

Other journalists spoke about the ravages of war and migration on their nations.

South Africa is not alone in facing complex problems with bad leaders in charge.

“Reshaping the future” is hard.

Dealing with our present is even harder.

A

LCOHOLICS Anonymous South Africa (AASA), which has helped and guided thousands of South Africans to recovery from alcoholism since the end of World War two, turns 70 this year.

AASA – which operates under the umbrella of the worldwide (USA founded) Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous – came into existence in Johannesburg in 1946, when the first South African recovery group opened its doors in Johannesburg.

The original (unofficial) ‘pioneers’ of AASA were a Johannesburg alcoholic migrant worker and Alexandra

celebrates 70 years in SA resident known only as Solomon, who stumbled across a Readers Digest story on the Alcoholics Anonymous recovery programme, which inspired him to sobriety; and a (non-alcoholic) nursing sister named Maxwell, who nursed alcoholics at the city’s then General Hospital.

First Group The official launch of AASA is credited to Arthur S, who, on 18 October, 1946, became the first alcoholic to form an AA group in South Africa.

Named “The Johannesburg Group”, it met at the then Spes Bona Club in central Johannesburg.

This was followed a year later by the establishment of an AA group in Springs by an alcoholic named Val D

Appreciating teachers TO celebrate World Teachers’ Day, Hirsch's Ballito recently spoilt the teachers at Little Lighthouse day care with a coffee morning as a token of appreciation.

The joyful smiles and peaceful surroundings contribute towards the happy environment for these children on a daily basis.

Carly Massimiani, owner of Little Lighthouse, said: “I originally opened a small morning care group from home. I am a mom first, and my ideal for a day care is offering a home

– who was also the founder and editor of the AASA quarterly magazine Regmaker, which has remained in circulation to this day.

AASA grew steadily from this launch pad by establishing regions; electing trustees; and creating what is known today as the General Service Office (GSO) – the organisation’s operational arm, which administers its business on a day to day basis.

Alcoholics Anonymous was founded by two Americans in Akron, Ohio on 10 June 1935 and celebrates 81 years of existence in 2016. The Fellowship, which is in the business of recovery (from alcoholism) has spread globally over the years and now spans 170 countries across all continents.

HE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture is offering bursaries to students who are eager to pursue a career in the arts and Culture related areas.

The department is offering bursaries in jewellery design, fine art, graphic design, languages, performing and non performing arts, anthropology, restoration and conservation, and archival studies.

Youth with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Funds are limited and there is no guarantee that all applicants will be successful.

The bursaries will cover full-time studies only at public higher education institutions, and covers tuition fees, meals or stipends, accommodation, and prescribed textbooks where necessary.

Students are responsible for their own admission to a tertiary institution and accommodation within a university’s residence.

Preference will be given those who pursue studies at institutions within KwaZuluNatal.

Bursaries will be awarded to those who choose to study at public higher education institutions, unless their chosen course is only offered at private institutions.

Successful recipients will enter into a contract with the department for a number of years equivalent to the duration of the period of study.

They may be required to serve the department for the same number of years specified in the bursary contract, unless stated otherwise.

To qualify for the bursaries, students must possess a matric/grade 12 certificate, be be-

tween the ages of 18 and 35, and reside in KwaZulu-Natal.

Students must also have a provisional acceptance letter from a public institution of higher learning, and willing to study courses in the fields indicated above.

Students who are currently studying in the indicated arts fields above are also eligible to apply.

To apply for the bursaries, students must fill out a bursary application form available from Operation Sukuma Sakhe war rooms, Department of Education district offices, municipality offices, and student funding offices at higher education institutions.

The advertisement and forms are also available to download from the KZN Arts and Culture website www.kzndac.gov.za Students are advised to fill out application forms carefully and correctly. Last year, applicants submitted incomplete applications without the necessary documentation, such as copies of their IDs and proof of residence. Applicants also neglected to disclose information regarding family income, or the whereabouts and income of the second parent.

The closing date for applications is 30 October. Only successful applicants will be contacted. If you have not been contacted within four months of the closing date, please accept that your application was unsuccessful.

ORD’S sophisticated Everest sport utili­ ty vehicle (SUV) is set to make an even greater impact on the South African market when an expanded range goes on sale locally in November this year.

With Job 1 for Everest production com­ mencing today at the world­class Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, it signals the start of a new era for Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) as it now be­ comes a two­vehicle assembly facility that also produces the Ranger for export to 148 markets in Africa, the Middle East and Eu­ rope.

“The start of local production for the Ford Everest is another major milestone for FMCSA’s Manufacturing division in imple­ menting Ford’s Global Facility and Process

The Everest will be produced for the South African market, and exported to coun­ tries across Sub­Saharan Africa.

This follows a combined R2.5­billion in­ vestment in Ford’s local operations for the Everest and Ranger programmes, creating approximately 1 200 new jobs at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA), and within its supplier network.

“The Ford Everest has been a very popular addition to our local line­up, but thus far has only been available in the two high­specifi­ cation 4x4 models which were fully imported

While the mighty 147kW 3.2­litre Dura­ torq TDCi engine remains at the pinnacle of the range for this capable and versatile sev­ en­seater SUV, the revised Everest line­up will be enhanced with the refined and eco­ nomical 2.2­litre Duratorq TDCi engine also found in the Ranger. It produces 118kW and 385Nm of torque, and can be specified with a manual or automatic gearbox.

Along with the existing 3.2 TDCi Auto­ matic four­wheel drive derivatives – in XLT and Limited specification levels – a third 4x4 model is set to join the mix in the form of the 2.2 TDCi XLS, equipped with a six­speed manual transmission.

Five all­new two­wheel drive Everest models will join the line­up for the first time.

This includes a total of four 2.2 TDCi versions in a choice of either manual or automatic, as well as the option of the mid­level XLS trim or the luxuriously appointed XLT. Topping the 4x2 range is a new 3.2 TDCi XLT Automatic.

Play Sport 365 offers comprehensive coaching teaching children both the physical skills and rules of various sporting codes including soccer, cricket, volleyball, netball, softball and athletics.

In keeping with their motto, “We get your kids active and fit through the power of sport” the three day programme offered various types of sport.

The participants were put through their paces, doing hurdles, shuttle sprints and other exercises which also assisted with their hand-eye co-ordination.

Participants were placed in teams and played cricket, soccer and volleyball after a brief how-to in each of the sports.

Coaching was undertaken by exteacher and founder of Play Sport 365 Yashin Tewary, who is well known in the community as a formidable former sportsman with KZN colours in tennis and cricket.

KwaDukuza teacher and parent Anstel Francis, whose son Aiyden participated in the programme, said since Aiyden joined he has seen tremendous improvement in his fitness and skills.

“The holiday programme also focused on team work which builds children’s social skills.”

North Coast champ aims for Olympics NORTH Coast karate superstar Dzemil Muric won the recent KSA National Elite 2016 championships hosted at the DUT Sports Centre having demolished all opposition with an outstanding performance.

The Ballito Ashton College pupil also had a double celebration as he successfully graduated to a 2nd Dan black belt under visiting Japanese chief instructor master Murakami Manabu in August.

is strictly focussed on making the national team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“I dream day and night of participating in the Olympics,” said the Salt Rock resident.

Pillay said: “Dzemil is a highly talented karateka and if he continues to work hard he will be rewarded with more success. I have no doubt that he will realise his Olympic dream sooner or later.”

President of Karate South Africa Sonny Pillay Hanshi who conducts classes throughout the North Coast encouraged the youth to participate in karate classes.

“Given its recently attained Olympic status our youth can now aim high as its sky’s the limit for our noble vibrant sport.”

THE Dolphin Plummers League 3rd round saw Neelan's Auto Gledhow and Kwafel Darts Club do battle once more.

Kwafel put up a good fight to sit top of the leader board. The first frame started like a house on fire, where both teams played top darts to tie the frame 3-3.

In the second set Kwafel stepped

up their tempo winning 6-0.

In the third frame the Kwafel team advanced once more and won 4-2.

The fourth frame saw Neelan's Auto team run out of ideas and was further in hot water as Kwafel shocked their opponents with a 5-1 victory.

Kwafel had their hopes too high as the fifth frame saw Neelan's Auto riding high winning the frame 5-1.

With the points showing Kwafel leading 19-12, the sixth frame saw

the Kwafel team win in great fashion 4-2 and secured a 23-13 victory walking off with high spirits on the night.

Tonight Kwafel Darts Club take on Sundowner Darts Club, both teams will be fighting for the league title.

A huge crowd is expected to be at the Quartz Sports Bar and Conference Centre to watch the two giants clash for the Dolphin Plummers League title.
