A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of 1 x 750ml South Africa.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka­ ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

Crime roundup MAKHOSANDILE ZULU Man hacked to death - A 60-yearold man was hacked to death last Friday, 11 November, at the Mgigimbe area after a man apparently believed that his girlfriend was involved in an affair with the deceased.

The deceased was allegedly found engaging in a sexual act with the woman when the murder occurred.

A male suspect was arrested in connection with the murder and the police retrieved a cane knife, which is believed to be the murder weapon.

The suspect appeared in the KwaDukuza's Magistrate's Court on Monday, 14 November.

Two arrested for murder - Two suspects were arrested in Lindelani for attempted murder and murder after they allegedly stabbed a man to death following an argument.

The incident took place on Saturday, 12 November at around 7.30pm in Lindelani E section when an argument between two groups made up of two individuals each resulted in the members of the one group being stabbed. One of them died while the other sustained injuries.

Security guards strike - On Tuesday morning, brief strike action by security guards broke out at the Mandeni Mall which police believe was a result of one of the guards having being issued with a letter terminating her employment with immediate effect.

The furious security guards allegedly locked all the gates entering the mall.

Pupils arrested - During a school safety programme and a raid by the SAPS at Sinenhlanhle Secondary School by the Glendale VISPOL, two pupils were found in possession of dangerous weapons, knives, on school premises and were arrested.

The three pupils, all aged 18, were arrested by the police.

Four arrested - Four suspects were arrested last week for robbing a tavern in Driefontein, uMhlali, last week.

The robbery allegedly occurred at around 10.30pm on Thursday when one case of vodka and R3 500 in cash were stolen.

The suspects were arrested in the Shakashead area on Friday morning at around 2.30am.

The suspects were apprehended by the community and the police were notified and responded swiftly to ensure the suspects were apprehended.

HE iLembe District Municipality is warning of possible water interruptions from Thursday, 17 November until Monday, 21 November.

The interruptions are a result of the municipality connecting the new 450mm OPVC Rising Main from Umvoti Pump Station to the Balancing Reservoir.

The first tie-in and anchoring at Umvoti Pump Station is scheduled for Thursday, 17 November and the curing of the anchor will take three days.

The second tie-in at the Balancing Reservoir is scheduled for Monday, 21 November.

A MOTHER and daughter are lucky to be alive after a large tree branch fell on their car during the storm that ravaged the North Coast on Saturday.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst, the family was on their way to Lucky Linton farm when the extreme wind caused a huge branch to break off and fall on their vehicle as they approached the farm.

“Fortunately the mother and child were not injured and emergency services were able to remove them from the vehicle.

“Motorists are advised to be alert when driving in unpredictable weather conditions we have been experiencing lately,” said Herbst.

ZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala urged recently launched Minzhu Enterprises to increase the number of people employed in its factory in the Isithebe Industrial Estate from 130 to 150.

Zikalala was speaking at the official opening of the enterprises' biscuit factory in Mandeni last week.

He urged the employers to raise the number of their employees by the following month, December and committed that Ithala Development Finance Corporation - which runs the Isithebe Industrial Estate on behalf of the provincial government - would assist the factory with its expansion plans.

"We commit that we will get Ithala to engage with them [Minzhu Enterprises] as they seek to secure a further 10 000 square metres of covered factory floor in order to ensure that they grow and are able to produce at an optimal level," Zikalala said.

Furthermore, he encouraged Minzhu Enterprises to source its ingredients from local suppliers.

The MEC said the R106 million pumped by the enterprise into the factory since 2014, is evidence that KZN is an investment destination of choice.

"We commend Minzhu Enterprise for having faith in the economy of our province, especially the fact that this enterprise has chosen the District of iLembe and the Municipality of Mandeni instead of other more established metropolitan areas," Zikalala said.

He said such an investment is in line with the provincial government's drive towards promoting industrialisation and the revitalisation of rural and township economies, adding that the factory would create employment opportunities for Mandeni residents which will boost the local economy.

Zikalala said according to the 2011 census outcomes, 8 735 (23%) of the 38 235 households in all the wards under the jurisdiction of the Mandeni Municipality do not receive any form of income.

He said that additionally, 40% of the total population of Mandeni is not economically active while about 22% of the population is unemployed.

"Employment creation is, therefore, of paramount importance. It is in response to this challenge that we have sought to position Isithebe Industrial Estate as a platform to stimulate industrialisation and manufacturing within the Greater Mandeni Municipality," Zikalala said.

The MEC said in response to the regrettable protests that brought the industrial estate to a halt and saw some factories burnt to the ground, R49 million was invested in the first phase of the Isithebe Industrial Revitalisation programme announced by Minister Rob Davies last month.

Mandeni mayor Siphesihle Zulu echoed the MEC's words when he said the launch of Minzhu Enterprises marks the revival of the Isithebe Industrial Estate.

"Isithebe is still functioning, and we hope

more businesses will invest in the area as this will create more job opportunities. Isithebe is nothing without the business fraternity that is why we would like to extend a warm welcome to Minzhu and other potential investors," he said.

The mayor said the Mandeni council would endeavour to ensure that municipal by-laws do not hamper but rather stimulate the growth of the local economy.

ANDENI Mayor Siphesihle Zulu announced last Tuesday, 8 November that the electrification of houses in the Vutha area will be completed as some houses were yet to receive electricity.

Zulu made the announcement during an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meeting which was held in the Nkomidli Sports Field in the Ndulinde area.

“Today we are here to intro-

duce the contractor for this project and that is A1 Electrical and the implementing agent is Percy Mthembu of PSMT engineers.

“They will give about 352 households electricity and the project should take about three months to be completed,” Zulu said.

The mayor called on residents with illegal connections to stop making use of this because they would now be receiving electricity from Eskom.

An exhibition geared towards change

EVERY taxi commuter experiences that moment. They jump into a taxi, Isikwele (the old “square” taxi) – and they look for an empty seat where they can plonk their overburdened behind and then wonder: “How can someone manage to wake up so early in the morning only to ferry around a load of people who reek of overestimated opinions of themselves, wearing misery like cosmetics, and all the while whining about the wreck and its captain carting them to their pathetic nine to five?”

The taxi industry is known for being a hotbed of insult-laden bickering between drivers and passengers – a fertile breeding ground for intolerance.

The horror show

While the Obamas believe Clinton is someone they can trust, half of the U.S. voters thought she was not.

What unfolded on Tuesday night

However, as I went through the State of Capture report, I realised that the “cap­ ture” might be taking place in the execu­ tive arm only and therefore the diagnosis of the situation is misplaced and unfairly exaggerated.

Should we not say the government/ executive capture?

I am of the view that if we are to inves­ tigate fairly a capture of our sovereignty then we must ask the correct questions.

This is the class struggle at its best be­ cause when the dust has settled only one class will secure a temporal victory against the other and we the masses and the working class shall remain locked be­ low the poverty line.

A taxi driver’s daily job is to transport thousands of impatient passengers dashing off to work, and sometimes I ask: “How much can uMageza (taxi driver) take before he snaps like a frayed fan belt?”

Every morning, taxi drivers are forced to put up with negative stereotypes.

Yet we forget that the negative things we say about the taxi drivers might lead to them conforming to those stereotypes.

The term uMageza eMpompini (he or she who performs their daily ablutions at a garden or communal tap) was coined to mock the personal hygiene of our beloved taxi drivers.

It is most likely a label conceived by

us, the passengers, who, during that rare moment of creativity, had ascended the socioeconomic strata, relegating taxi drivers to a lower rank – unclean and dirty - suggesting a lack of civility and education.

That is the crack in “blackness” that the exhibition uMageza uNyoko (uNyoko used as an offensive term) seeks to magnify and explore in greater detail – the pompous assumptions that passengers hold about themselves as opposed to their taxi driver counterparts.

This relationship between passenger and driver (change-flinging master and rickshaw operator) is a microcosm of modern society – a lopsided scale of wealth, privilege and assumed self-worth.

This conversation about the dynamics of our society intends to make us, the passengers, question our implicit role in perpetuating stereotypes, and in deepening the class divide, all while creating a fractured community of people who do not understand each other, who are suspicious of each other, who cannot tolerate each other and subsequently do not respect each oth-

until the early hours of Wednesday morning felt like a nightmare and defied all expectations.

Donald Trump won support in key battleground states and therefore swept to victory.

This election was not something anyone could remain dispassionate about. The future of our world, respect for people of different races and faiths, and our values as a human race, are all on the line.

In his victory speech, Trump adopted a reconciliatory tone, promising to be president for all Americans, not just to those who voted for him.

“Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division; we have to get together.

“To all Republicans and Democrats and independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.”

This was obviously scripted to be reassuring. But his words rang hollow after all the threats, vitriol and wild promises that defined Trump’s election campaign.

Among the promises was the

pledge to build a wall between the United States and Mexico to prevent people entering his country.

He also undertook to eject Muslims from his country and other people he profiled as terrorists.

Now that the dust has settled, it seems even more surreal that a bigot with abusive tendencies towards women, erratic policies and dodgy business practices could be trusted by millions of people to run a powerful nation like the U.S. Clinton was a deeply flawed candidate and her past scandals weighed heavily against her.

But how a man who thinks it is appropriate to walk into the dressing room of teenage girls and who believes he is entitled to grope women and brag about it could be preferable beggars belief.

While some people believe Trump’s “success” in business qualifies him to run the country, they remain in denial about the numerous times he has filed for bankruptcy and his refusal to declare his tax returns.

It is true, however, that Trump has

extraordinary powers.

How else do you explain why millions of people believe the litany of falsehoods that he spouts and consistently look away from his loutish behaviour?

On Wednesday, protests broke out in several cities around the U.S., with people taking to the streets to demonstrate their rejection of Trump as their president.

But the dye is cast and people in the U.S. and around the world will need to reconcile with the fact that a person with an unstable personality who flies into fits of rage over tweets will now have access to the U.S. nuclear codes.

Those who voted for Trump believe he will change their lives for the better.

I believe that the U.S. and the world are headed for unprecedented volatility and that those who bought into his nonsensical vision will come to regret doing so.

The exhibitionists (oMageza Taxi Association) – a collective of young artists influenced by a spectrum of communities that colour the South African landscape – seek to draw our attention to the demise of African values that revolve around showing respect and treating each other with hospitality.

The decision to use the taxi industry – and the sometimes toxic relationship between driver and commuter – as an example to best illustrate the seeming fall of African values is based on the fact that majority of South Africans have and continue to depend on this mode of transportation.

Therefore, this means a majority of South Africans have and continue to experience the rather concerning dilution of these values.

The ultimate goal of the association is to, through the exhibition, spark a conversation that will, in the end, seek solutions geared towards restoring these African values.

The exhibition opened this weekend at the Jo Anke Art Gallery in Johannesburg.

China malls are doing a roaring trade DURING a recent trip to Johannesburg, I visited a few Chinese malls.

There are quite a few huge China Malls within a five-kilometre radius in the Crown Mines area in Johannesburg.

What astounded me was that these malls were extremely busy, doing very good business. However, what concerned me was that all the stores I visited gave me a piece of paper as a receipt, which was written in Chinese. It appeared that this “receipt’’ was more

to show the guards that I did not steal anything than for actual receipt purposes. There were no tills and no proper invoices in most of the shops in these malls.

So how are they paying VAT and income tax? It is well known, given the porous nature of our customs, that these goods are highly under-invoiced and so traders are already paying less duty on importation and arguably no VAT or income tax. How has SARS

turned a blind eye to this? It may have been too focused on the Guptas to notice that we are losing billions and billions in revenue from this relaxed China trade and much of this money is flowing back to China in the form of diamond exports and other forms of money laundering.

FRANCE is at war with Muslim immigrants who want parts of Paris to be allocated to them, but we don’t see or read about this in the various media.

Why? I have a video of police and immigrants clashing and the scenes are devastating — shops are being looted, cars are being torched and over-

turned, police and locals are being stoned and central Paris is in turmoil.

All off-duty police officers are being recalled to assist with the rioters.

A police officer is shot in the stomach but the rioters form a barrier and won’t allow the ambulance to proceed to pick him up to take him to hospital,

and still there is media silence.

Has the French government implemented the same decree as South Africa has —don’t televise any bad publicity about the country as it will deter tourists from visiting?

JYOTHI LALDAS WITH the commencement of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children approaching, a group of civil servants, community members, government officials, parents and private sector individuals have joined forces to embark on a CBD Awareness Walk.

The walk is intended to create awareness and implement change in terms of domestic violence issues and school bullying which has been prevalent in KwaDukuza in the past few months.

The group has formed a planning committee and is that residents join in the march.

“The number of domestic violence cases are increasing and school bullying is leaving pupils physically and emotional traumatised.

“Parents and community members need to know that there are a few good men and women who want to change the circumstances and it is for this reason a team of private individuals and local government officials have joined to unite against violence in schools, homes and our community,” said Nirvana Naidoo spokesperson of the organising committee.

Sathya Sai Baba taught that man’s basic nature is divine and that the purpose of life is the realisation of that divinity. This, he said will occur through leading a moral life, rendering selfless service to those in need and developing love and respect for all life. He re-emphasised the core principles that formed the foundation of all the world’s religions, being, truth, love, right conduct, peace and non-violence.

He encouraged devotees to practice these human values in their daily lives and set an inspiring example by the way he led his own life.

Sathya Sai Baba stressed that he is not seeking to establish a new religion or to direct people towards a particular religion. He encouraged those attracted to his message to “continue worshipping along lines already familiar to you”.

The Sathya Sai Organisation is a spiritual one; it recognises the fundamental unity of all the religions. It has centres in over 137 countries.

TANGER Manor Primary School scooped the lion’s share of awards at the Lower Tugela Maths Association (LTMA) awards presentation held at the KwaDukuza Town Hall on Wednesday.

LTMA hosted an inter-school Matha-Move and Maths Top 20 Competition (for pupils from grades four to seven) during the second term of this year at the Stanger Heights Primary School.

The top three achievers in each of the games and their parents were invited to the awards ceremony.

Last term LTMA hosted an interschool problem solving relay/challenge for pupils from grades three to seven. Approximately 2 000 pupils participated in the first round. Pupils who excelled in round one automatically advanced to the second round of the competition. The second round took place at five local schools and strict invigilation was conducted by officials of LTMA. The names of the top 20 achievers in each grade were revealed at Wednesday’s awards ceremony.

There was huge jubilation among pupils and parents after the results were announced.

Isaac Abraham, president of LTMA, was full of praise for all pupils, especially the Grade 3 pupils who showed tremendous creative thinking skills in solving the problems.

All three mathematics subject advisors from the iLembe District of Education, Nombuso Makhaza, Khona Shandu and Phikelela Gumede who were present at the awards ceremony were beaming with pride to witness the outstanding effort of the pupils and the work done by members of LTMA in promoting mathematics at primary schools.

URBAN comedy lovers will be treated to a bumper line-up of funny men and women when this month’s Laugh Machine Comedy Show takes place at the iZulu Theatre on 18 and 19 November.

The show features a dozen established and up and coming stand up comedians as part of perhaps the most diverse comedy lineup ever to be seen in KZN. One of the highlights of the show will be veteran comic and East Coast Radio breakfast show host Darren Maule who thrilled audiences across the country with his razor sharp wit and unique take on current affairs.

Also featured, amongst others, are Tyson Heffer, one liner maestro Kams Govender who is widely regarded as a future comedy star, Vanessa Morton,

Mo Vawda, Mfundo Ndovela, the hugely entertaining “Some Black Guy”, and another ECR favourite Rory Petzer.

The show will also feature Durban favourite Masood Boomgaard.

“Laugh Machine is a reflection of the exciting growth seen in the comedy industry in Durban,” says Boomgaard.

“There are so many immensely talented funny people emerging in this city. The diversity is quite exciting as well. We are getting comedians coming from different communities bringing unique and fresh perspective to the stage. It’s an exciting time for comedy.”

Laugh Machine takes place on 18 and 19 November at the Sibaya iZulu Theatre at 8pm.

Mr Sato said the LC featured levels of ri­ gidity that surpassed even that of the limited production LFA V10­powered supercar.”The LC is 60 per cent more rigid than the current Lexus GS performance sedan, which results in sharper and more precise, linear handling,” Mr Sato said.
