MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

2014 has been marked by persistent challenges in our economy with price inflations (food, electricity, fuel, etc.).

We had weather catastrophes and crime

However, the one thing that continues to stand undefeated is the spirit of the Upper Highway community. Through the difficult times, our readers have once again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient and strong-willed.

The mayor said that the growth of the collection rate will significantly improve the municipality’s revenue and that the implementation of the austerity measures would ensure that wasteful expenditure is curtailed.

“The management is supporting the implementation of austerity measures and we are actually implementing that programme vigorously now,” Gumede said.

Alleged ATM fraudsters arrested MAKHOSANDILE ZULU DETECTIVES from KwaDukuza SAPS arrested three suspects, at around 6.45am on Friday morning in the KwaDukuza CBD for alleged ATM card fraud.

The detectives were conducting an operation in the area following a spike in the number of incidences reported to the police about ATM card swapping, said KZN SAPS spokesperson, lieutenant colonel Thulani Zwane.

“During the operation, the [SAPS] members saw a suspicious

white Toyota double cap and two men were at the ATM. When the members tried to approach the vehicle, two men [at the ATM] jumped into the vehicle and speed off,” Zwane said.

He said that police gave chase until the suspects were apprehended on King Shaka Street opposite the King Shaka monument.

The three suspects are between the ages of 30 and 40.

Zwane said the suspects were in possession of ATM cards from different banks and that these were seized by the police.

“The suspects were positively linked with other cases of fraud in other areas. A case of fraud was opened at KwaDukuza police station for further investigation and the arrested suspects will appear at KwaDukuza Magistrate’s court on Monday, 17 October 2016,” he said.

The suspects were remanded in custody and will appear again for a bail application on Friday.

KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, warrant officer Johannes Khoza urged local community members who have been victims of card swapping at an ATM to contact the police.

HE Institute for Local Government Management (ILGM) held a KZN Women in Local Government Summit last Friday in Ballito.

The summit kicked off with a gala dinner held at the Boathouse in Ballito on Thursday evening.

The summit was organised as an endeavour to achieving 50% women representation in leadership positions within municipalities.

Speaking at the gala dinner, KZN MEC for Social Development Weziwe Thusi said that promoting gender equality and women's active participation in the political, economic and social spheres is central to her roles as an MEC and as the deputy secretary of the ANC Women’s League in KZN. She commended the South African government for its efforts in the last 20 years of eliminating gender disparities in the workplace and other sectors of society.

Thusi said that the influx of women into positions of power, traditionally dominated by men, and the contributions that women have made in these positions have resulted in greater gender awareness in the country.

“We have also adopted significant legislative reforms and have developed policies and programmes based on the national Constitution and its Bill of Rights, act 108 of 1996, which seek to

promote and protect women’s rights in the home, in the community and in the workplace,” she said.

She said that during apartheid women representation in parliament stood at 2, 5% and that in the last 22 years that figure has grown to over 40%.

“In provincial legislatures, female representation has almost doubled.

The number of women who have been appointed to senior positions in government has grown significantly,” Thusi said.

However, she said that though the country has made noticeable strides with addressing the issue, the battle against gender disparity has not been won. She added that discrimination against women has become increasingly subtle.

“We currently have approximately 193 female Ward councillors and 677 male ward councillors. We have 481 female PR councillors and 495 male PR councillors.

“The difference between female and male PR councillors is very low, but it is not something that we can celebrate as women because it tells us that political parties do not believe that we are fit enough to represent them as ward candidates,” Thusi said.

Thusi called on an increase in the number of women appointed to senior municipal administration posts to ensure a wider range of perspectives are at play in policy formulation and service

delivery.

“While a critical mass of women is necessary to ensure women representation, the quality of representation is just as important,” She said, calling on women to be trained and mentored for these positions.

Speaking on Friday KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube said that South Africa currently ranks 17th out of 145 nations in the Global Gender Gap Report compiled by World Economic Forum (WEF). She said that the report measures the gap between women and men across four areas - namely health and survival, political empowerment, economic participation and educational achievement.

“As things stand, South Africa scores highly in terms of politics and health.

However, it ranks 72nd out of 145 countries when it comes to economic participation and opportunity,” she said.

Dube-Ncube said that she noted while having a look at the statistics that in 54 municipalities, only five women occupy the municipal managers’ positions compared to 42 males.

"In 12 of our municipalities, where the organogram provides either for (seven, five or three) senior positions, all are filled by males,” she said.

Dube-Ncube said that there is a need for women in local government who know that they hold the key to the liberation of other women.

3. The optimal reading of the image is usually pro­ vided by doctors who specialise in breast imaging and who have possibly received overseas training in mam­ mography interpretation.

4. A process of rigorous quality control, where all outcomes are recorded and regularly analysed.

Only where all of these conditions are met, will the promise of lowering the mortality rates from breast cancer and the increase in breast conservation be realised.

Myth 5 It doesn’t make a difference where you are treat­ ed.

Truth A very important, but often overlooked factor is where a patient is treated. It has been shown that dependent on where the woman is treated for breast cancer, the risk of death within 5 years can be up to 60% higher in environments where only few breast cancers are treated versus environments where more than 150 breast cancers are treated per year. This ef­ fect is larger than any chemotherapy, hormonal ther­ apy and radiation.

Myth 6 Removing the entire breast is better than breast conservation.

Truth Breast cancer metastasizes to places outside of the breast. The tumour in the breast will not kill you – the spread of the cancer to the brain, lungs etc., will.

As breast cancer often does that early in the course of the disease, a mastectomy will not guarantee you better survival than breast conserving therapy.

Should a radical mastectomy be necessary, breast reconstruction can take place during the same ses­ sion that the mastectomy is performed. A multidisci­ plinary treatment approach involves: The oncologic surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a medical oncologist and a plastic surgeon to optimally time and sequence the individual treatments.

Myth 7 My breast cancer wasn’t detected by mammogra­ phy.

Truth High quality mammography will detect about 95% of all breast cancers. Breast cancers that do not image are rare if the above criteria of a breast imaging centre are met.

Myth 8 Mammograms are painful.

Truth If the breasts are painful, a mammogram should not be done until the reason for the tenderness has been addressed. Well trained mammographers should be able to assist you in relaxing. When you are relaxed, the pectoral muscles behind the breast relax, which should result in a painless mammogram.

Myth 9 If you have breast augmentation, breast cancer is harder to detect and you are more at risk.

Truth Breast augmentation does not constitute an in­ crease in glandular tissue, therefore you are not more at risk. It is necessary that an experienced mammog­ rapher takes your mammogram as special techniques are needed to demonstrate all breast tissue. ­ Women24

INDING out that you have breast cancer can be a shock and a set back.

A North Coast mother and grandmother shares her experiences with the Weekly.

Joyce Govender (63) was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 at RK Khan Hospital at the age of 40. She went for a surgical procedure (lumpectomy) to remove an underarm lump near her right breast.

“I was diagnosed at RK Khan Hospital in 1997 in Chatsworth. When doctors told me that I had breast cancer, I was very upset and depressed be-

cause I was under the impression that cancer is a death sentence.

“I wept and prayed in hospital. I had surgery on my right breast and an underarm lump was removed,” she said.

She told the Weekly that she has become a living testimony in her community as she defeated breast cancer in its early stages.

Govender is spreading a message of hope to senior citizen clubs in Belvedere and encourages other residents to go for regular cancer check-ups to the clinic.

Despite all challenges she encountered in her life, she is now volunteer raising breast cancer awareness in

Tongaat.

“I offer counselling to people regarding breast cancer. My intention is to give people hope and encourage them to live a positive life. I started doing counseling a year after I found out that I had breast cancer.

“Perhaps the support that I received from my family and friends is what motivated me to be optimistic and conquer the disease.

“I go for checkups every year to Mediclinic Victoria Hospital in Tongaat and the results so far have been have been good. I can say with no doubts that I am a breast cancer survivor,” she said.

In 2010 she was one of the volun-

teers at Verulam Regional Hospice participating in community outreach projects.

“Breast cancer is not the end of the world and people must not lose hope.

Prayer changes everything and you can overcome anything if you have faith as little as a mustard seed.

“I am so glad that I can be a living testimony and set an example that life goes on despite all obstacles I encountered in my life,” she said.

Kiddies Campus exciting sports day JYOTHI LALDAS

IDDIES Campus hosted an exciting sports day at the Stanger Manor Primary School grounds on Sunday.

Children participated in hurdle races, cone stacking, sprint races and bean bag picking.

The event was co-ordinated by founder and CEO of Play Sport 365 Yashin Tewary.

“It was amazing to see some of the children coming out of their shells and giving their best effort. It was also an honour to be in the company of guest of honour, the legendary Zoo Motala.”

Motala was one of the first sprinters from KwaDukuza who is a South African Masters cap and the current record holder in his age division.

Sundowner clinches Dolphin Plummers League title WEEKLY REPORTER SUNDOWNER Darts Club clinched the Dolphin Plum­ mers League title in close contested fashion.

The Dolphin Plummers League got under way with the two giants Kwafel Darts Club and Sundowner Darts Club locking horns on Wednesday night.

The first frame was a tight battle as both teams drew 3­3. In the second frame Sundowner took a 4­2 win. The third frame saw Kwafel level the matter 4­2.

In the fourth frame Sundowner stepped up their momentum and won 4­2.

The fifth frame was a decider for the race, but both teams drew 3­3 once more.

In the final frame Sundowner had a one way run and won 4­2, winning 20­16 on the night.

This league was played on three round system and Sundowner Darts Club won on the tally 14­13 in a nail biting fashion to clinch the league title.

HE one-day football tournament hosted by the AmaZulu Community Trust and KZN Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) will see the spotlight falling on KwaDukuza on Friday, 21 October.

The U12 football competition will see the schools involved in the project earning an opportunity to showcase their talent in front of their respective arrears and possibly convince AmaZulu scouts for future reckoning in the club’s youth structures.

Throughout the year the players and their coaches are mentored through the latest life skills and football training methods to enable them growth in their day-to-day survival in life and football pursuits.

The KZN Future Stars initiative is a schools social upliftment collaborative project between the AmaZulu Community Trust and KZN DSR through football.
